Summary:

Desperate to find relief from worsening migraines and broken magic, Harry sets out to reach mystical hot springs that are said to grant healing and realignment.

The only problem? The springs lie deep within a cursed forest that lures hikers to their death by tempting them with their greatest desires.

So when Harry sees Draco Malfoy in the forest, he must be hallucinating.

Right?

Or: A hero’s journey but gay.

Excerpt:

“You’re beautiful.”

Draco snorts in surprise. He actually snorts. “Did you hit your head, Potter?”

“No, really,” Harry says. “It’s a little ridiculous sometimes.”

Draco frowns, leaning away from him. “Maybe we should get going.”

“Do you really want to?” Harry asks.

Draco studies him, realization brightening his eyes. “Harry...” he says. “Do you think you’re seeing things right now?”

Harry laughs. It’s a clever trick. If he didn’t know better, he might even fall for it.

Draco shuffles out from under the blanket and sits on his knees in front of Harry, locking him with a steely gaze. “Harry,” he says. “This is real. I’m real. We’re nearly out of the forest. You aren’t seeing things.” He shakes his head hopelessly. “We should go. Your mind is turning into soup.”

Harry laughs again, if only because it’s exceptionally accurate. He feels giddy, both exhausted from the trek and his injuries and comforted by the blanket and Draco’s cool, stabilizing gaze.

“Stay,” Harry says. He shrugs off the blanket and reaches for Draco’s arm.

Draco looks down at Harry’s hand like it’s burning into him, then he meets Harry’s gaze. “You are truly among the most idiotic men I’ve ever known,” he says. “Let’s go.”

But he doesn’t move. Neither of them move.

In a few minutes, Harry will be off again, on the trail alone. In an hour, if he’s lucky, he’ll be at the springs. In a week, he’ll be back in London, newly healed or more deeply broken.

But right now, for the first and likely the last time in his life, he has the opportunity to do this — even if it can never be real.

Harry reaches slowly for Draco’s face, cupping the smooth, soft skin of his cheek and jaw. Draco freezes, his eyes boring into Harry’s in wonder. Harry closes the distance between them and kisses him softly - just enough to get a taste of Draco’s warm lips, to breathe him in deep and then release.

Harry pulls back. Draco’s eyes flicker between his rapidly. He pulls in a quick breath and holds it.

Then Draco leans forward, reconnecting their lips. Harry sighs into his mouth as Draco pushes up on his knees, deepening the kiss, one hand gripping the nape of Harry’s neck. He’s halting at first, and then Harry pushes a hesitant tongue into his mouth. Draco’s fingers tighten against Harry’s neck. He nibbles on Harry’s lower lip.

Then, in a flash, he drops his hand and pulls away as if burned.

“Fuck,” he says, drawing a hand to his brow as he stares at the ground with alarm. “Fuck,” he repeats, and climbs to his feet.

“What is it?” Harry asks, pushing the blanket off. It’s a very confusing hallucination.

this is so hard because literally every comment i get makes me that kermit meme thats just him holding the phone surrounded by hearts 😭 i am just so so grateful to anyone who wants to leave a comment! that being said, i hold the comments ive gotten on my trans fics really close to my heart because often it’s trans people saying “this work made me feel seen/loved/validated” and thats a huge part of why i write nuanced trans stories with happy endings!! because we deserve to see ourselves loved unabashedly and joyfully. I was tagged by @the-starryknight, @peachpety, @maesterchill and @tigerlilycorinne, and I’ve really enjoyed reading the personal thoughts everybody else has on their works from this year!

I have three fics in particular that I think of as my favourites for 2020. This year has been the first year I’ve finished more than one work, and as a result I feel far more confident about my ability to tell complete stories now than I did at the start of the year.

1. what the body wants is coolness (13k, T)

I started this one in 2019 and hit a wall after writing the first two scenes. Like every completed fic so far, attaching a deadline to it gave me sufficient motivation to figure out where it needed to go and how to get there. I am particularly proud of the Harry/Draco emotional arcs, and I feel close to this fic because of the ways it incorporates aspects of my own long-term relationship as well as Job Feelings. These turned out to be prescient since I was laid off in August right after submitting it, an event which directly contributed to the number of fics I ended up writing in the last quarter of 2020.

2. Repast, Interrupted (4k, T)

This is another deeply personal fic, which any IRL friend who reads it would be able to identify immediately. I never expected to submit anything for Sudsfest; however I found myself laying awake at 3am one night waiting for my doctor partner to come home and the idea wouldn’t leave me alone. One of the reasons this is a 2020 favourite is that my partner read it and proceeded to hug me; she said it made her cry in a good way, and I take that as a victory.

3. body electric (9K, M)

This fic is such a mystery to me. I decided I wanted to write a gift fic, I had something like five days to do it, and first the outline appeared in its entirety, and then I sprinted for like seven hours over two days and the words just. Flowed? It was unreal. I have never had a fic just erupt out of me that way, but I remember feeling the tension as I was writing it and fearing I wouldn’t be able to turn it into words. I’ve now reread it a couple times and it still feels like it achieved everything I hoped, which feels great! I’m now high on the feeling of writing fics for specific people, so... watch out?

4. The H/D Oral History Project

This is another project that wouldn’t have existed without me getting laid off. I love hearing people talk about their personal fandom experiences, and the idea of collecting and sharing those stories wouldn’t leave me alone. The biggest hump was deciding to pull the trigger, wondering whether I was really the right person to start this project. However I’m glad I did, and I’ve received a lot of survey responses that I’m slowly working through and tagging; hopefully I’ll have some more news about this project in 2021!

5. DEFINITION OF A RESEARCH PROJECT AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR FULFILLING THE REQUIREMENT (3k, E)

I wrote this as part of the firewhiskeyfic fest, and it was honestly a transformative experience. I have a lot of difficulty writing without editing at the same time (what if the words aren’t perfect???), but the rules of the fest are 1) no editing and 2) be drunk, and the end result is something that I still reread and laugh about. It taught me that I can share things that do not meet my exacting standards, and it is also possible for me to write smut under the right conditions. It’s not necessarily good smut, but it’s there if I ever want to stretch that muscle some more.

Most popular multichap: Ok, y’all I only have one chaptered thing, and it’s not even a finished thing, My True Love Gave To Me, for 25 Days of Harry and Draco, a bit of Christmas fluff and cuteness, very On Brand.

Favorite story you’ve written so far:  I love all my fics, y’all, for different reasons. BUT I will say that my fic for HP Sudsfest, Color Me Enamored, is my favorite. I had so much fun delving into emotions depicted as color, and I love writing a more mature, 40 year old Drarry. [whispers - I’m commissioning art for this piece because, well, I love it, and I want art for it, and so, merry merry to me, ha.] Stay tuned.

Fic you were nervous to post: My 2020 Wireless fic, Love Found. Without hesitation, without question. It was my first Fest, my second only posting of fanfic ever, and I thought, sure, let’s pick a prompt from a fandom legend (and gift it to them! like hi, hello, you don’t know me. but HERE IS THIS THING I WROTE, gah), lemme re-write the Tower scene from HBP with our 16yo boys engaged in (off-screen, non-explicit) sexual activity and ALSO have a possibly triggering creepy character interaction. I’d lost my beta right from the start, and I was so green in the fandom and to fanfiction writing! I asked the few lovely, wonderful folks I’d interacted with for help, and they were lovely and wonderful (BLESS THEIR HEARTS). They had to talk me off the ledge many, many, many times. I nearly pulled the damn thing! I cried literal tears over this fic and cursed past me in the endeavor. It’s the one I fretted over the most, worked the hardest on…so yea. That One.

How you choose your titles: I usually pick from something in the story, words I’ve written or some theme or phrase that jumps out at me.

Do you outline: So I tried outlining for My True Love, and realized I am terrible at outlining. I write non-linear stream of consciousness…in all caps for first drafts. Lots of bullets. So I’m learning that for longer fic, while I do need to have something planned, loose outlines work better for me.

Complete: I’ve 45 completed works on AO3.

In progress: My True Love, of course. I’ve a series, Days of Our Magical Lives, in the works…Moving Day, the sequel to my very first fanfic, Laundry Day is...still nearly done and still sitting there but I’m wanting to finish that. I’m writing for Draco/Ron Fest (UBER EXCITED, y’all!!) and H/D Cluefest to kick off 2021.

Coming soon/not started: I’m SERIOUSLY considering Big Bang, though the word count scares the bejeezus out of me. I’ve an idea! I think...anyway. And I’ve something I’d maybe do for LCD...? Both are anon fests, so I can’t get into deets!

Prompts? I am always open for prompts/asks to write! I had the MOST fun writing my Autumn Drabbles from prompts. So bring ‘em, y’all.

This Malfoy blinked up at him, then lifted the bottle of tequila.

“I’m teaching you how to make a drink.”

Harry sighed. "You know what I mean. Why are you in my Limbo? This isn’t the place for casual… for, er, mates, like us." He’d stumbled over the words, and his face flared warm, but he pushed up his glasses to cover it. Dumbledore had been in this place, and Molly Weasley. He couldn’t go around saying things like ‘fuck buddies.’

Malfoy’s head tilted. It tipped his hair out of the loose braid he’d kept it in, and the string of piercings on his ear glinted in the light.

“You tell me,” Malfoy said. He reached for Harry’s face. “Maybe you miss me.” He smiled, thin lips stretching in a line. “Or maybe you’re just thirsty.”
