A critique I've heard of season two is that we’ve lost a lot of our symbolic objects, archetypes, and motifs. Season one gave us the lighthouse, the kraken, the red silk and the unicorn, the seagull, the auxiliary closet, Gnossienne no. 5, Pinocchio…
And then I think back to Samba sharing a quote from writer Alex Sherman during the ECCC panel:
“Season one is Stede going from a puppet to a real boy, and season two is Stede becomes a man.”
And that’s it, isn’t it? The transformation from object to subject, from something that has things done to it versus someone with agency. We see that transformation throughout season two. Almost every significant object is discarded, every symbol realized in flesh.
The process starts at the end of season one with the throwing away of all of Stede’s things. So much has been written about Stede’s potential response to that act, and so many folks (myself included) held on to the idea that perhaps Ed kept a little bit, maybe the auxiliary closet. Stede literally no longer cares about those things. He originally brought all the things he loved with him to sea because he didn’t have significant personal relationships. That’s why we hear Gnossienne no. 5 as he goes through the empty cabin pulling out all of the knives. The discordant love motif shows how his priorities have changed, how his love has transformed.
The red silk is gone as well, but instead we have Stede, real and in the flesh wearing the exact same color, clutched in Ed’s hand in the moonlight.
The kraken, a giant monster capable of rending a ship in two? Ed becomes that, literally, disassembling the Revenge to sail her into a storm and destroy her.
The lighthouse? A warning, Ned Low in his silver suit, a beacon in the dark warning Stede of what he will become if he continues on his course.
The unicorn, the destroyed masthead, literally becomes Izzy, a man taken apart and rebuilt piece by piece out of the parts of Stede Bonnet to become a beloved and respected member of the crew, and perhaps one of the strongest examples of self-actualization so far.
The attempts at reversing the process are demonstrated to be ineffective. The catalyst is when Buttons becomes a seagull, which shows Ed that the process of change is possible—that someone can become something or someone else. And he tries, he throws away his leathers, dons Button’s old jacket, tries to become an archetype. Stede tries to become a “real pirate”, despite the warning from Low. Even in Ed’s vision of Stede as a merman, Stede is being reduced to the role of symbol—a mythical being rather than a very real, very flawed man. They are both still trying to be the object when they need to be the subject. They need to take action, to realize themselves. And it’s a gruesome process. Jim’s version of Pinocchio is about the horrific transmogrification from wood into flesh and the horrors that need to be faced in order to make that transition.
We, the audience, are experiencing discomfort in this process. We are being held right up against the lighthouse lamp, and it burns. This is the emotional equivalent of body horror. It feels like all of our beloved belongings are being thrown overboard, but I promise they aren’t.
They are becoming.

ofmd wasn't "profitable" enough but I didn't even get the feeling hbo wanted to make money off of it. They didn't promote it when s1 dropped, and the promo for s2 was erratic at best. They don't sell merch. Or physical copies. There's no bts documentaries other than what actors (shoutout to Samba ilu) make themselves in their spare time.
It took more than a full year for me to be able to watch s1 legally! I still can't access s2 legally anywhere! It's not that ofmd is unprofitable, it's that hbo refuses to profit off of it, because - well, because profiting off of it would mean investing work and money into it.
And like. Of course, when you compare it to the juggernauts hbo holds rights to, like GoT, ofmd is small fishes. But.
How on earth do these clowns think cult classics happen?
A Game of Thrones was first published in 1996 and didn't make it on the NYT beststeller list until 2011. The first edition of the first Harry Potter book was 500 pieces. And yeah, TV shows are different, but if you look at today's media landscape, would things like Star Trek, or Buffy, or Doctor Who stand the slightest chance? These things take time, is my point. A piece of media doesn't become a massively profitable, beloved classic over night. It takes time and effort to build that kind of franchise.
And the thing is! Nobody who makes these decisions even likes stories. I'm convinced that whoever is in charge at hbo, at amazon prime, even at disney, thinks storytelling is dumb and for idiots. They think it's enough to just slap the name of something people love on whatever garbage they spit out, for it to be profitable. They think it's the brand that sells: Look this has "Lord of the Rings" on it! Look, this one has "Game of Thrones", you like Game of Thrones don't you? Watch my show, boy.
But this isn't how this works. It's not the name that sells (unless, I suppose, you're the MCU, and even there one gets the impression the trick is finally stopping to work), especially not when the product is bad. People aren't idiots.
But it's not about making something good. It's not about making a meaningful piece of art, or telling an engaging story. ofmd served its purpose; it drew in all the subscribers it ever would, so there's no point in letting it go on. Even in the s2 that we did get, this is evident: the penny pinching is palpable, it's clear that the studio didn't want to spend any more money than absolutely necessary on it, and then cut the budget by 40%.
It's not about art. It never has been.
And it's not even about profit, because to be profitable eventually, stories have to be allowed to thrive first. You tell a good story first, and success happens later, often much, much later.
And ofmd was incredibly, astonishingly successful. It was the most in-demand series for weeks after the s1 finale. But even that wasn't enough, it's never enough, ofmd could have made record-setting profits and it still would have been cancelled, because -
Well, I don't know. Because we live in a bad time for art. Because Orwell was right, and stories have become commodities, like shoelaces. Because. Well. It's not about telling a story, is it?
What's the point of a story? What's the point of making something for the joy of making it? What's the point of a piece of art, existing, if it cannot be transferred into numbers for the stockholders?
idk how to end this. I hope David Jenkins finishes the story he wanted to tell, even if just for himself. I hope, against all odds, that weird, fun, heartfelt, beautiful little stories like ofmd continue to happen.
But goddammit.

Feel The Rhythm In Your Soul | Daryl Dixon x Fem! Brazilian!Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Of all the things you thought would happen at Deanna Monroe's party, being asked to dance by your quiet, shy partner wasn't what you expected. And you certainly didn't expect to have to teach him how to dance.
Genre: Fluff.
Era: Alexandria, pre Saviour arc.
Warnings: Swearing.
Word count: 830.
A/n: Finally finished this request. Sorry for the long wait :'). This was really fun to write, though! Also, I'm sorry if any Portuguese translations are incorrect. I used Google translate for this. If anything is wrong, please let me know and I'll fix it! (Translations will be at the bottom.)

“Daryl, calma. You won't be able to move right if you're so tense.”
Daryl huffed and crossed his arms over his chest, giving you a frustrated look. “M'not tense. Dancin' s'jus' fuckin' impossible.”
You shook your head and gave him a huge smile. You stepped behind him and readjusted his body, before stepping in front of him again. “It's not impossible. You just got to become one with the music. Feel the rhythm in your soul, and let your body do the rest. Don't overthink it too much.”
Daryl grumbled something under his breath before sighing. “Alrigh'. Show me again,” he nodded, his lips twitching up at the small squeal of delight you emitted.
Sometimes he wondered how someone as pessimistic and brooding like him got lucky enough to get with someone as energetic and full of life as you. Despite everything you've endured in this cruel, unforgiving world, you remained optimistic, hopeful, full of life.
You remained his happy girl.
“Incrível,” you replied happily. “Just follow my lead, okay?”
“Alrigh',” Daryl responded. He tried his best to follow your slow movements, trying to get it perfect for you just to hear that beautiful laugh of yours again.
When he had asked you to teach him how to do one of your traditional dances, you had excitedly pulled him aside to teach him something called a Samba, even if the music wasn't exactly the best to do it to. From what you had told him, you were only teaching him the basics. Basic footwork and basic handwork.
Basic my ass, he thought to himself as he struggled to follow your lead. He had never danced before and was beginning to realise that he had two left feet when it came to this activity. However, despite having been trying to teach him for half an hour, you refused to write him up as a lost cause. You'd simply smile brightly, beautiful eyes sparkling up at him while you reassured him that he would get it right soon. You were endearing to him like that.
Surprisingly, Daryl had managed to follow your instructions without any hiccups this time around. He had actually done pretty well, considering his inability to dance. He was kind of proud of himself. And so were you.
“Bom trabalho, garoto lindo! Você está conseguindo!” you exclaimed happily, throwing yourself into his arms and hugging him tightly.
Ignoring the looks the other shallow minded Alexandrians were sending his way, he smiled softly and embraced you gently. He wasn't one for public displays of affection, preferring to keep that part of your lives private. However, when you were this excited and sent him that absolutely radiant smile of yours, he couldn't be bothered. You were his perfect girl.
“Peach, ya know I love it when ya speak Portuguese, but yer strictly English speaking partner needs a translation,” he whispered into your long, curly hair, smiling at the giggle you let out.
“Sorry. I was just saying that you were doing it. You completed one basic Samba routine,” you explained, pulling back from the hug to look at him. “I'm so proud of you. You'll be doing full Samba routines with me in no time.”
Daryl gave you a small smile. “M'lookin' forward to it,” he responded, suddenly looking quite nervous. “But m'done fer tonigh'. Vamos para casa, linda.”
You gasped in surprise, before smiling widely. “Daryl, did you just—”
“Speak Portuguese?” he finished for you, nodding hesitantly. “Yeah. I found a book and have been tryna learn fer ya. Y'know, so ya can speak yer language more often and have someone understand ya.”
Happy tears started to well up in your eyes. You stepped forward and softly embraced him, resting your head against his chest.
“Muito obrigada. I love you so much,” you whispered against his chest.
A beat of silence passed. Daryl pressed a soft kiss to the top of your head, feeling his heart begin to flutter uncontrollably. He closed his eyes and focused really hard, recalling one of the first things he taught himself to say in your language.
“Eu também te amo.”
➳༻❀✿❀༺➳
Translations (BASED ON GOOGLE TRANSLATE! I DON'T SPEAK PORTUGUESE SO THIS IS MOST LIKELY INCORRECT. Please feel free to comment the correct translations for me and I will fix it!)
Calma: Calm down.
Incrível: Incredible.
Bom trabalho, garoto lindo! Você está conseguindo!: Good job, pretty boy! You're doing it!
Vamos para casa, linda: Let's go home, beautiful.
Muito obrigada: Thank you so much.
Eu também te amo: I love you too.

Lyle’s IQ score Head Canon
Tumblr media
HEAR ME OUT: as much as Lyle def gives me himbo™️ energy, I also feel like he’s supposed to be…PRETTY SMART? he’s just also goofy. Like, I feel like he’s one of those friends that’s the smartest but also the dumbest person you’ve ever had at the same time.
Here is my evidence (dons glasses and grabs a laser pointer)
1. First and foremost, I’m pretty sure Quaritch wouldn’t let a dumbo be able to advance to the rank of Corporal, so Lyle needs to have SOME level of competency (but there’s still some room for his goofball nature lol).
Side note, studies show that people who are comical tend to have higher IQs since it ranks critical thinking to understand humor and make jokes. So Lyle is at least smart in that department.
2. In the first movie, we can see that Trudy trusts him enough to work on her Samson. We all know how much Trudy LOVED her Baby, so she must have had some serious trust in Lyle (someone who wasn’t an RDA mechanic) to let him even TOUCH her Rogue One’s equipment.
3. Also in the first movie, Lyle actually knows his stuff about combat theory and the AMP suits. When Quaritch has Lyle survey the aftermath of the Omatikaya’s retaliation for the destruction of the Tree of Voices, Lyle is able to describe in detail what the damages are. He’s able to tell that the arrows were fired from Ikrans based off the angles of the arrows in the damaged equipment and dead bodies, he can say for a fact that the AMP suits are not just damaged but what exactly is damaged (the Driver in this case).
4. Now in the 2nd movie, we actually get to see more of his smarts come into action. Lyle actually gets promoted from Corporal to Lieutenant and becomes second in command to Quaritch. The RDA wouldn’t let that happen if he was purely a trigger happy soldier; you needs some gray matter for that position.
5. Next, Quaritch looks to LYLE to pull the security feed off of OG Quaritch’s AMP suit. And Quaritch is a smart guy too, but it feels like Big Curly Q knows he’s out of his depth on this one and just hands it off to Lyle because he knows that he actually knows his stuff.
But ya, thanks for coming to my TedTalk :)
Also, a few other hcs I embrace
Lyle is that ONE gringo friend that knows FLUENT Spanish (and possibly knows other languages as well). And when I say Gringo, I don’t mean he’s white but is still Hispanic, no. There is a reason why JamCam named this man after Wainfleet, Ohio (the Ohio of Ohio). But nobody questions his ability to speak Spanish. You leave him alone in any Authentic Hispanic setting and come back in 20 minutes, they’re running to the liquor store because they already ran out of Tequila/pisco/etc. TEAM LATINO LOVES HIM
*side note, Jake probably knows some Spanish too since he did his tours in Venezuela. Who knows, maybe he taught some to Spider because he knows he’s team Latino. A
*and Quaritch probably knows some of Nigeria’s native languages (Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, etc) since he did 3 whole tours there before coming to Pandora
Lyle likes 90s music (Britney Spears, Mariah Carey) but mainly SHAKIRA. I could see him just dancing alone to Hips Don’t Lie and someone walks in trying to get his attention, but he doesn’t notice and they have to clear their throat and he just screams when he finally notices them
He can dance Samba, Cumbia, Tango, Flamenco. ANYTHING in that family HE CAN DO IT FLAWLESSLY ASU PAPI
Might come from a family of mechanics and worked in a mom and pop mechanic shop (I embrace that one HC where he has a love for cars and just engineering in general). Maybe he wanted to be a more refined engineer but just couldn’t pass the tests since he was more of an intuitive thinker and tests favor more of the technical thinkers.
Likes DragonBall Z but will never admit it

ahhh your writing is so cool!!
Anyway, I was wondering if you could do headcannons for mc who's a classical musician but is too shy to say that they are to tamarack and qiu? And one day mc just plays their instrument for them?
Lots of love,
A classical music fan.
Ohhh this is really cute, mainly because Tamarack is canonically a classical music lover 😭 i know jazz and samba dont count but i just really enjoy instrumentals a Lot so here we go!
This is gonna actually be step 3 in mind since i like the idea of mc starting band in step 2 and then admitting in step 3!
Btw i do hcs and stuff for step 3, but obviously a lot of these might be not canon by the time the game comes out in full so there's that disclaimer neow
Tumblr media
Qiu Lin
While they're definitely not as musically gifted as say Tamarack, they definitely do have a high respect for those who play instruments and play them well. So naturally it comes as no surprise to them when they hear that the MC plays an instrument
However, he never actually heard the MC play anything unless they were in band! When they were younger, Qiu never pried or tried to figure out what the MC sounded like by themself when they were starting out. It's something he absolutely wants to kick his 14 year old self for because now the MC is too shy to even play for them
Until at last, the MC wanted to play something for them at their house, and of course Qiu going to say yes! Qiu wasn't an asshole this time around!
Qiu might not be the most attentive or can sit in place for too long, but you bet their ass they did for this song until it was completely done. Granted, it took all of their strength not to fidget or write something down on their phone but they powered through
Afterwards, I do think Qiu would most definitely ask if it's classical and that it's really cool to finally find out the MC's favorite genre. Though I can imagine the MC being like "Huh? Why didn't you ask?" When they find out Qiu has been dying to know and Qiu has to admit that their 14 year old self was too chickenshit to ask
It's also good to keep in mind, too, cause that means if Qiu has a recital and the MC knows the song Qiu has to dance too, they can practice together! Qiu can practice dancing to the music and the MC can practice the song.
Tamarack Baumann
Now, this I feel like starts a bit different than Qiu because Tamarack does really enjoy classical music as well so I can imagine her actually getting the MC into it but because their shy and/or have a crush on Tamarack, they don't tell her about it just yet
They do play band together though qnd while I imagine Tamarack has played solo numerous times, the MC is far too reserved for a solo at the time so she doesn't know either what the MC sounds like on their own and unlike Qiu, she would have definitely wanted to practice in step 2 with them but never got the time
So when it comes up in step 3, Tamarack is jumping for joy, both figuratively and literally. After she calms down a bit, she sets up her living room and gets very cozy to prepare to listen to the mc. She wants to really give them the time and attention they deserve
Naturally when the MC starts playing a classical piece, she immediately recognizes the song but she doesn't speak until after the mini performance. Though the entire time she is bopping her head and humming a little. It's very cute.
After the MC finishes, she immediately starts gushing about how good they were on top of knowing the song and asking if the MC is a fan of classical music like she is. And trust and believe, Tamarack becomes estatic when she finds out they do! Thus they have a very engaged conversation over some baked goods and tea about classical music like what artists they prefer, what's their favorite instrumental group, etc
Also, the first thing that popped into my mind when I got this ask was Tamarack asking the MC if they can play together as a duet, and I think the idea is adorable. Especially if the MC's instrument compliments Tamarack's cello playing. I think they would practice and perform together for friends and family if someone asked.

Nesta Archeron in the Summer Court!
Disclaimer: in my head Summer is more Brazil than the Mediterranean. Visuals: X , X
She comes to Summer seeking the sun.
Tarquin's been hard at work with integration policies but certain areas still have a zoned feeling to them.
Nesta finds somewhere close to a human neighbourhood. Some days she lies on the floor with her window open - keen ears picking up on the familiar dialects of her human life.
Some nights it's hard to look at the ocean, reminds her too much of the Cauldron but it sings so different, so soft and apologetic that something in Nesta eases.
Because of the contrast of the ocean and constant exposure to pools and water gardens, it slowly becomes easier to bath too
She slowly adjusts to the fashion too, less grating on her internalised modesty when the weather demands it.
She tans, it's barely a shade or two, but it catches her off guard to look in the mirror and not see the porcelain doll the Cauldron Made. It makes her smile, a little victory.
She listens to bossanova.
Loves the restaurants turned half dance floor by the setting sun. She loves the icy drinks and the fruity salads.
After they're sure she isn't there to cause more trouble, the royals ease up their surveillance and leave her be.
She sees them out and about sometimes but doesn't go beyond greeting or making small talk.
The humans adjust to faerie festivals and take to sitting outside, on their roofs and patios, to watch the carnival and water dancing.
She's surprised one day by an invitation to celebrate the Summer Solstice with the HL and his delegates.
There's a small panic in her and she doesn't reply until she's out on a walk and bumps into Tarquin himself and ends up agreeing to at least join for the banquet before the night takes off in full
She isn't forced to interact beyond small talk and besides Tarquin himself, no one tries to be overly familiar.
It's not terrible and she ends up watching the carnival from the palace balcony when most leave to join the crowding streets
One day the sea calls more sweetly than usual and Nesta even manages to make it out to rocks to find a group of mermaids waiting. At first they don't say much, just offer her gifts from the ocean
Guilty, she says she has nothing to give back but the mermaids settle that she should tell them a story. The first few times she retells familiar fables and recent reads but one day ends up simply bringing a book along
The women of the sea don't blush or giggle but they seem entranced by certain aspects so Nesta curates her collection to include what they like
News of this reaches Tarquin and Cressida when they go Under to meet with their watery counterparts.
Cressida later recounts this to the head of the royal library who then offers book suggestions to Nesta
One night Tarquin quietly joins the crowd, fresh from the sea.
It doesn't take long, not with how nice Tarquin is, for them to become friends despite the small self hating part of Nesta that insists she doesn't deserve it.
Her visits to the palace happen almost monthly now and it isn't long before Cressida sends her tailor Nesta's way
Nesta isn't sure she can fully embrace Summer Court fashion - the Fae a little too free for her taste but she comes to like the loose, open and colourful dresses she and the tailor decide on
Cressida teaches Nesta how to Samba. Then they slow dance and kiss.
She receives a patterned silk scarf as a gift from Tarquin and weaves in into her crown braid for her next visit.
The visit is not quite the usual, Tarquin is taking her out of the city and into the jungle. The Fae there are less exposed to humans than those on the coast and he wants her to act as a sort of test to whether they might begin to build refugee settlements inland as well
Nesta becomes a sort of middleman and begins corresponding frequently with the human-fae integration task team before fully joining.
She's grateful but the work begins to open her eyes to how accommodating the Fae are being and she becomes interested in seeing and connecting with the wilder, more faery side of Summer too
The grin Tarquin gives her when she tells him this lets her know she's about to experience a whole new world.
Nesta looks like a jaguar with her tan and freckles and casual grace with underlying power
Nesta getting an actual jaguar as a pet cause it just follows her out of the forest one day
Nesta with an apartment full of tropical plants and she has a parrot!!!
There was no overarching structure to this but that's what I get for rushing into making this. Anyyyywayyyss
Nesta Archeron with a tan and freckles. A gold n red scarf in her hair and a flowing blue dress with tropical flowers on it. Her feet in the sand. Tarquin and Cressida will have her wearing gold jewellery soon enough. Nesta learning the Summer dialect and teaching Fae the Human dialect from south of the Wall.

Samba’s soft fur wraps your form nicely as you lay under the covers, mind clogged from Taehyung’s words. ‘’You really don’t remember, do you?’’ His soft yet blurred gaze left itself impaled to your head. No matter how much you tried to deny that Taehyung has moved on and that you’ll never be able to get together again, your heart still skips a beat whenever you’re in the same facility as him. It’s been five years without him, now he’s back and you’ve lost all control of yourself.
‘’Samba, what do I do?’’ Her green eyes stare back at you, all wide and big that you can see a reflection of yourself in them. She nuzzles her small head against your chin, rubbing herself back on your face, a gesture she does to comfort you. Samba always reminded you of Taehyung, her small gestures of love, so soft yet subtle reminded you of whenever Taehyung would play with your fingers when you were anxious about an upcoming exam during college or the delicate head scratches when you laid on his chest while having a movie night, Samba laying in between the both of you as Taehyung’s large hand covering most of her form as he caressed her.
‘’I– I hate myself for missing him.’’ It’s when the buried sentence comes to light that your voice becomes clogged, your emotions showing how you deeply feel towards everything.
Samba’s paws reach your cheeks, stopping your tears from trailing further down your cheek and you smile softly at the sight.
‘’I’m sure you miss him too.’’ When Samba meows at your words, you know you aren’t the only one missing the past despite the heartbreak Taehyung got you through and the unresolved question which is, why did he break up with you? With a deep sigh, you squeeze Samba closer to you, Taehyung’s last words still swirling around your brain.
Tumblr media
When you arrive at the office the following day, it’s awfully quiet. You haven’t caught a glance of Taehyung nor Jules. Maybe today, for once, you’d have a relaxing day at the office without any problems sneaking up behind you.
It hasn’t even been an hour of answering emails and finishing your work task, when Jules knocks on your door. You sigh in irritation, before putting on a professional smile towards your colleague.
‘’Good morning!’’ She cheerfully exclaims, her energy too high off on an early Friday morning. ‘’I’m just here to remind you about the office dinner later tonight!’’ Great. Just what you needed. A possibility to see more of Taehyung when you in reality just need space for yourself and if it weren’t for your boss being extremely grateful of your presence, you would’ve canceled on the spot. You can do this. Taehyung might not even come.
‘’Thank you, Jules.’’ She nods, closing your door again. You slump back on your chair, cussing at the universe laughing down at you to have you in close proximity with not only the CEO, aka somewhat your boss but also your ex boyfriend since you were young. This is too cliché for your head and you want to crawl in the hidden room in Parasite and stay there till Taehyung is no longer visible in your head.
You come to an agreement with yourself; to not get drunk at the office dinner. Yet you wince at the upcoming drinking games all of your colleagues have hidden up their sleeve and the disappointed expression of your boss when you reject a soju bomb. Although, you do not want to even imagine how you’ll act while drunk, and in front of Taehyung paired up with Jules.
When a meeting is called in, you let your mind solely focus on work and add Taehyung at the back of it. There’s no need for him to be in your mind as he also stands in the same room as you. He’s not looking at you, barely noticing your presence and it stings like a bitch. If only you knew what was going on in Taehyung’s head…
Tumblr media
The room is stuffy, all of your colleagues surrounding the large wooden table, paired up with barbecue, soju and beer. It’s loud, conversations spilling over one another, everyone drinking and having fun. You’re seated next to your boss, Mr. Lee, his cheeks already flushed red from the alcohol and warmth in the room. He’s chatting with Jules, her sneakily trying to get a promotion by completing his tie multiple times.
Taehyung is sitting in front of you, his eyes skipping you whenever he looks around himself. Until the room has turned an ounce hotter, he finds the time perfect to take off his blazer, revealing the white button up and black tie. You want to mentally slap yourself for ogling him so obviously as he showcases his veins, rolling up the sleeves to prevent himself from spilling alcohol. You watch every movement, as Mr. Lee desperately tries to gain your attention to get rid of Jules and that’s when it happens, his eyes lock to yours. Your heart stops, for a quick moment. You expect for Taehyung to look away, but he continues to stare you down, his gaze trying to speak to you. When he loosens his tie slowly, that’s when you lose control and turn your gaze on Mr. Lee conversing about work.
After a few rounds of soju bombs, most of your colleagues have gone home, their drunk state getting them extremely tired. A few of them get picked up with a cab, leaving you alone with Mr. Lee, Taehyung and Jules.
Jules head is resting on the hardwood, her slurring words as he drowns herself in sleep. Mr. Lee notices her state and being the good boss he is, he turns to you with a sympathetic smile. ‘’I’ll get her home safely. You don’t mind bringing Taehyung home as well, right?’’ It’s at this that you take notice of Taehyung rocking back and forth, with closed eyes and puffy cheeks. He’s extremely drunk.
Mr. Lee has absolutely no clue regarding you and Taehyung’s relationship and if you fuck it up now, he’ll know for sure something is going on.
‘’No no. Have a good night.’’ He thanks you, lifting Jules to hold her upright as they walk out of the restaurant. Taehyung is smiling at you, his boxy smile on full display and your heart can’t help but flutter at the sight.
‘’I’m bringing you home.’’ You rise from your seat, Taehyung giggling as he grabs his jacket, his muscles flexing as he moves. You hate yourself for even enjoying the way he’s effortlessly hot without trying.
‘’You’re such a good friend.’’ He emphasizes on the word friend on purpose, blinking harshly as he spits it out, as if he despises it. You don’t comment on it, only mentally preparing yourself to bring Taehyung home with no trouble.
After endless times of Taehyung at the verge of tripping on the street, you’ve managed to bring him to the lobby of his apartment complex. He’s clung himself tight onto you, his weight pouring down on your form, exhausting you much more than you’d expect. The lobby guy doesn’t comment on it, sensing you’re close with one another.
You manage to press down on the elevator button, Taehyung’s head rolling around as it hangs low. With a cling, you enter the elevator along with Taehyung, him pressing the floor number.
‘’You haven’t changed.’’ You turn, Taehyung’s face is covered by his dark curls yet you hear him clearly. You don’t have time to swallow his words before the doors open in front of you.
Taehyung’s apartment is clean, boxes covering most of the living room and the kitchen as he recently moved here. You guide Taehyung towards his couch, his bedroom missing a bed. When you’ve let go of him, you quickly find water and a bucket — if he wakes up with the need to vomit. Taehyung notices how you walk around his place, suiting yourself nicely at his place with no worry. He’s missed the sight of you and him in an apartment together, if only Samba was here as well.
You come back, Taehyung thanking you as he takes a hold of the water, chugging it fast. You don’t say anything, returning back to the kitchen to fill the glass up again. Although you accidentally bump into something, at the corner of of the kitchen. You peek towards the coach, Taehyung’s eyes are closed. You’ll hate yourself in the morning for snooping around in Taehyung’s stuff, but for now you’re terribly curious of what exactly it was that almost caused you to wince in pain.
Slowly, you pull the fabric covering the hidden treasure. That’s when it catches your eye, a specific painting. It’s a painting Taehyung did of you and Samba, laying on the couch as you took an afternoon nap while waiting for Taehyung after class. You can’t believe he’s kept the art piece and you feel the corner of your eyes watering, overwhelmed by all kinds of emotions. You wish you hadn’t seen this, seen any sign of Taehyung holding onto the past as you are as well. You continue to look through, tracing your fingers delicately onto the frame. It’s only when Taehyung groans that you’re cut out from your trance, the memories flooding your mind.
You return back to Taehyung, his tie loosened and a few upper buttons from his shirt open. His eyes are closed and when you’re about to leave, Taehyung takes a hold of your wrist.
‘’You’re not going to stay?’’ The warmth from Taehyung’s palm catches your attention and his somewhat sleepy voice.
‘’It’s late, you should sleep.’’ If he wasn’t so drunk, you’d find courage to ask him about what he meant in the elevator.
‘’Mhmm, I knew it.’’ He lets go of your wrist, the last of his words unclear.
Fuck it.
‘’Taehyung, that day in the elevator. What were you talking about?’’
He sighs in frustration, the locked question coming out of its shelf. ‘’That night when you shcalled me drunk.’’ He slurs on his words yet you bring yourself back to the night where you decided to get extremely drunk after seeing Jules and Taehyung kiss. The phone call was still hazy in your mind, yet to your luck Taehyung continued to talk.
‘’You got so angryyy wit me–’’ He groans, adjusting himself, exposing more of his face to you. ‘’Because I– looked at you as if I was schtill in wuv with you.’’ Your mouth drops, connecting the dots from when Taehyung admittedly told you at the office the next day. ‘’I’m not sorry for looking at you like that.’’ When you’re about to answer, small snores are escaping Taehyung’s parted lips.
‘’Do you still love me?’’ You ask it more likely for yourself, knowing Taehyung is sound asleep, not hearing anything that surrounds him. With a deep exhale, you find strength to leave the situation, your brain processing what Taehyung admitted.
As the door closes, Taehyung whispers to himself, ‘’I never stopped.’’
Tumblr media
You’re nervous. The office building is standing tall in front of you and you can’t find the courage to enter it. Your mind has decided to replay your conversation with Taehyung on Friday on repeat, and if you don’t do something about it, you might explode.
Jules coming from behind you, loosens you up for what’s waiting upstairs. Kim Taehyung. It’s the first and last time that you’re willingly chatting with Jules as you walk together. She tells you about her hangover the following day, along with her dinner date with a guy from online which ended good. Jules has always been someone you chose to stay away from, because you simply didn’t click. Yet here you are, chatting about the weekend with her and sort of enjoying it.
When the elevator doors open, you’re brought back to your own reality and the unresolved question, should you talk with Taehyung about this? You don’t know yourself if you’re ready, still not comprehending that he’s still—
‘’Y/N.’’ Taehyung’s call out of your name, squeezes your heart tight and your stomach starts to bubble nervously. You’re not ready.
‘’Sorry Taehyung. I just need more ti–’’
‘’About Friday, thank you for getting me home. You’re a great friend.’’ He pats your shoulder in a friendly matter, completely overlooking your offended expression by his actions.
‘’Um, sure friend.’’ With a nod, he returns back to his office, acting as if the conversation between you never happened. Maybe he forgot. It wouldn’t be the first time alcohol finds a way for you to get somewhat closer to being apart again.
When you return to your office, you feel empty. There’s no other reason than solely Taehyung and his odd behavior towards you when Friday he was a completely different person, as if his walls didn’t need to be put up against you.
Yeon-su’s contact number catches your attention from your desk, your phone buzzing constantly. Her lovely energy seeps through the call as she exclaims proudly that she has amazing news.
“Jimin’s parents own a cabin! We were thinking of going there next weekend, what do you say? Are you in?” You could never turn down such an exciting event. Maybe that’s what you needed. To get away from Taehyung and anything that keeps your attention back to where it’s not needed.
“I’d love to!” She proceeds to squeal out of excitement and tells you the whole plan to follow you up upon.
This might not be so bad after all. A getaway trip from reality.
Tumblr media
It’s the day of the cabin trip. Yeon-su just texted you that Jimin’s car is parked outside, waiting for you. You give Samba a few kisses and cuddles before shutting the door on her. You’ve managed to convince Jungkook to take care of her while you’re gone and making sure she’s getting fed and getting enough love from someone while you aren’t there to provide it.
As you step into the car, you flinch.
“T-Taehyung?”
This trip just turned into pure horror.

Voyage Through the Disney Canon :1937-1949 ranking
These are the first 11 Disney animated films ,ranked from my least favorite to most favorite
11.Fun and Fancy Free -Ah Fun and Fancy Free, the favorite Disney film of nobody ,at least from what I have seen .I have never seen any one talk about this one positively and yeah I'm not gonna praise it either, this film is rather messy .I really dont like the first segment about Bongo the Bear,I actually think it is dreadful (THough Dinah Shore does some good narration ),Jiminey Cricket is a bit grating here ,and I like Edgar Bergen in general but wow is the wraparound segment with him unsettling especially if you dont know who he is .The Mickey and the Beanstalk segment is good but not to noteworthy aside from Bill Gilbert delivering a enjoyable performance as the giant and there is a scene where Donald becomes murderously insane ,thats fun
Tumblr media
10.Saludos Amigos -This movie isnt bad,its just....Barely a film .Its only a bit over 40 minutes ,it feels more like EDutainment talking about South America .It fine for what it is and hey it gave us Jose Carioca
Tumblr media
9.Melody Time -Its fine .I like the Blame it on the Samba segment and the Johnny Appleseed segment is sweet and definately the best part of the film, gets me misty eyed ,but every other segment is just.....OK to me
Tumblr media
8.Three Caballeros -The much better companion film to Saludos Amigos, this film is weird and energetic ansd just fun, with the titular song being a highlight .
Tumblr media
7.Dumbo:So of the 5 Capital C Classics(The first 5 films Disney made which are Snow White,Pinocchio,Fantasia ,Dumbo and Bambi ),I didnt know which ones would rank where.....But knew of the 5 Dumbo would be the lowest, which I feel bad about cuase...I really like Dumbo ,its a very nostalgic childhood favorite :Pink Elephants is a great sequence, the Baby Mine song brings a tear to my eye .heck the songs in general are good,Dumbo is a lovable protagonist and I love the performance of Edward Brophy as Timothy the mouse ,I think he is an underrated sidekick. It has a MAJOR problem with it and yes it is the racism ,like wow,not just the crow scene but the song "Happy Hearted Roustabouts" which is just...Yikes .However theres another reason it is not higher becuase it does its job too well.It was made to be a short simple movie, and it suceeds in being that ,but as such the other films I find more interesting .However let it be known I have a soft spot for Dumbo
Tumblr media
6.Make Mine Music -This ia an underrated gem.I personally dont dig the more abstract segments but theres a lot of fun music and animation and I think the final segment the Whale That Wanted To Sing at the Met is a masterpiece with for me,the saddest moment in the Walt era
Tumblr media
5.Fantasia -FAntasia is a movie I admire more then I like .Most of what I love is in the second half,I adore the Dance of the Hours and the Pastorial Sympathy and of course Night on Bald Mountain is MAGNIFICENT ,butwith the exception of the delightful Sorcerers Apprentice, the first half drags for me .I do like the movie ,finding it very artistically pleasing but I cant say its one of my personal favorite Disney films but can totally see why it is a favorite for many
Tumblr media
4.Bambi -This is a contender for the best looking film of the Walt era, gorgeous backgrounds ,great character animation and its more of a vibe then a story .Its not for everyone....But Bambi is awesome to me,its kind of neat just watching this deer live his life .ITs really cute (Especially the stuff with Thumper the rabbit ),its gorgeous and has some solid emotional moments .I dont like the soundtrack but the rest of the film I really enjoy .
Tumblr media
3.The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad -This is my favorite of the wartime/post war animated films cause its one I watched a bunch as a kid .No9w truthfully the first segment covering Wind In the Willows is just good.I like the performances of Eric Blore as Mr Toad and J PAt O Malley as Cyril ,theres some funny moments,Basil Rathbone is a good narrator ,but I prefer other takes on Wind in the Willows and I dont like how minimized Ratty and Mole are .....The second segment is a masterpiece, with great character animation, comedy, wonderful narration by Bing Crosby who also sings the banger that is the Headless Horseman song and yeah the Headless Horseman himself is a wonderfully scary villain with the chase scene between him and Ichabod Crane being one hell of a climax.
Tumblr media
2.Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs -This film the more I see it the more I love it .Its funny cause I used to not like this movie but now I have fallen for its simplistic charm. It feels like no other Disney film ,like it is so unpolished cause they are trying to figure out how to make a feature and I finsd it endearing .Snow White is a character I do care about, the Queen is a simple yet imposing villain and By god when she becomes the Witch she is reallly creepy and rightfully has been nightmare fuel for many a child over the generations (Props to the voice work of Lucille LaVerne ).The scene stealers really are the Dwarfs ,especially Grumpy and Dopey who are played an animated well.Bit of a comfort movie for me ,so had to place it a bit high
Tumblr media
1.Pinocchio-This is one of my favorite animated films of all time .It is sweet ,it is dramtic , and it can be really intense .The songs are all great (No Strings On Me might be my favorite ) .The character animation is great (I particularly love Bill Tytlas animation of Stromboli ) ,the climax is just a marvel of animation (Monstro the Whale is one hell of a feat of animation ),Pinocchio is a likeable protagonist,Honest John is a hilarious comedic villain who stands in contrast to the more terrifying villainay of Stromboli and the Coachman ,and Jiminy Cricket ,Geppetto, and Figaro are just lovable.I love lovve love love love love love this movie .

Dancing with the Stars Season 32 Week 2: I Have a Confession
So last night was week 2. And I was thinking of structuring this like last week, but only 1 and a half couples truly had me feeling energized about the night. So I guess we'll go back to the regular format. Because Jamie Lynn was eliminated, I'll just talk about her up here. After watching her dance, I wasn't shocked. With all the controversy that was following her, we needed to have at least one big week from her. We didn't get that at all. And outside of that one moment up in the skybox with Julianne when she redid that move from her cha cha, we didn't get much fun out of her either. So what happens when you have a controversial celeb (that people truly don't like) that has potential that is not even being scratched, who is kinda just there and not giving much in any department? You get a somewhat shocking (but not really when you think about it) elimination. If they wanted to stay, they had to do something to get our minds off of the Britney Jean sized elephant in the room. They didn't do that and I think I'm more shocked that they didn't vs the fact that she was eliminated. That being said, she went out on a positive note (for the most part). So hopefully she can internalize that.
The show itself was a snoozefest. Alfonso and Julianne have kinda been blah so far. The technique and performance quality of the vast majority of the stars was not good enough to have Latin night this early. I just feel like theme weeks should start week 4 at the absolute earliest. Week 5 is what I believe is ideal. Let everyone's skills get better so that we're not watching 4 couples stumble through a samba in week 2, all to fulfill a theme. And the dances that the pros have been giving to the celebs have been pretty ho hum across the board. So now let me start the recap.
Lele and Brandon- Samba (Score=21)- Lele did pretty well with this dance. This was the half a dance I was talking about and upon watching it back, I'm actually gonna up that to being fully impressed and I think this dance was underscored. It should've gotten at least one 8. I think Lele had an understanding of the technique and rhythm of the dance that none of the other samba doers truly understood. And her feet were pointed this time! Than you Brandon. I just want her to do some more refining things and she'll be set.
Tyson and Jenna- Salsa (Score=18)- What an improvement a week makes! Tyson was a completely different dancer out there. I just knew he wasn't a no hoper. We just needed him to get more comfortable out on the floor. What I want him to work on now is 1) getting the technique cleaner and 2) work on getting lighter on his feet. But he is definitely on the right path.
Barry and Peta- Cha-cha (Score=15)- Barry struggled a little bit more this week than he did last. But the foundation is there for him to give good Latin dances. He does have some rhythm and his technique is mostly nice. Those New Yorkers were really really nice. Now, we gotta get him to fix his pancake hands, work on the technique a bit more and loosen up them hips. But I really think these two could play spoiler to many couples this year if he keeps improving. And honestly, he might be a true dance contender.
Adrian and Britt- Samba (Score=15)- Mm. Okay so this was a challenge. So let me start with the good. His face was much better this time around. I also saw that he worked on cleaning up his footwork. Now, he struggled with the dance itself, he still needs to be lighter on his feet, the technique still needs work and he needs to do a better job of partnering Britt. Right now it's not working the way that it should. But if they stick around, I can see that getting better and him becoming a decent dancer.
Mira and Gleb- Salsa (Score=18)- Hmm. Okay. Mira has really nice technique. She has everything to be amazing. But she's currently petrified of the dances and she dances too light. I need Gleb to get her to realize that she's good. I also want him to tell her to dance through the floor and not just on top of it.
Xochitl and Val- Salsa (Score=24)- So I thought this was a good dance. It was missing something though and I can't really place my finger on what it was. Actually, I know what it was. It was too much and too fast. It's a critique I have of Val at least once a season. He jam packs so much into a dance that sometimes, his partners can't breathe. Xochitl did well enough, but I also felt like it might've been a little much and sometimes she got a tad behind. Also her arm in that last lift was not great. Very good dance though.
Ariana and Pasha- Samba (Score=20)- Ariana did alright for the most part part. There were several questionable moments where she either looked off balance or lost a bit of control. I'm gonna say it's her nerves right now because it's not bad. She's still a fantastic dancer and I'm also still worried about her fanbase. But she might benefit from the same things that Melissa Rycroft did in her first season. Only time will tell.
Mauricio and Emma- Salsa (Score=12)- Mauricio actually started out doing pretty well. The problems that most of the other men dealt with this week, he did not deal with it. That was up until he forgot everything. And then the routine crashed. I'm actually shocked that Mauricio didn't get eliminated this week. But I guess people really pulled through for them. I still don't think Mauricio will last long, but hopefully he can come back strong next week.
Alyson and Sasha- Tango (Score=19)- Alyson also had a major improvement this week. I have to admit, I didn't think we could get this level of dancing out of Alyson. But we got it and it was a legitimately good dance. Now, I want her to dance with more intention. She placed everything pretty well, but it wasn't as strong as it could've been. I also want her to relax a little bit more throughout the dances. But we're moving in the right direction.
Charity and Ezra- Cha-cha (Score=21)- As we know, Artem had COVID and had to sit out this week. So we got Ezra as a fill in and I'm glad we got to see Ezra in this capacity. I would not mind seeing him as a pro next season. Ezra is also gay and we're lacking that representation with Louis gone (even though Louis is a bitter and hateful ass bitch and I don't get that energy from Ezra at all) and I don't think we've ever had that on the women's side of things (please correct me if I'm wrong). Now onto Charity. It was cool. Technically, it was a great dance. But I feel like she was timid and stiff. I'll chalk up a lot of that to having a new partner and just being nervous in general. She'll be better as the show goes on, but this just wasn't her best.
Harry and Rylee- Salsa (Score=15)- Harry moves very small and is still terrified of these dances. I think he handled this one better and I saw some improvement. He stayed on time more. But it's still not great. I don't think he can get to a great or even a good level. But he is improving and he can shock us. I mean Alyson definitely shocked me this week.
Jason and Daniella- Rumba (Score=24)- This was the best dance of the night. I think Jason might be the one to beat. I have to see a ballroom dance from him but I do not have any reason to believe that he will really struggle with those based on what he's shown and the past work of Daniella. I did see the misstep that CAI was talking about, but wow, what a dance. I was incredibly impressed.
So that's what I thought about the show. Let me know your thoughts and I will talk to you all soon.

Frasier episode 3.13 "Moon Dance"
I came to the 90’s sitcom scene for Friends, but I stayed for Frasier. More specifically, I stayed for Dr. Niles Crane. The best episodes of Frasier are the ones that open with Kelsey Grammer casually ducking out to visit Frederick for a few days, not to be seen for the next half hour while Niles quite literally trips over himself for Daphne. I don’t dislike Frasier as a character, but he’s a lot. He’s yelly and condescending and he’s been around for so long that it’s nice to have a breather from him every now and then. And the rest of the Crane clan has no problem holding their own. The sign of a truly well-rounded cast of characters, when Frasier returns to bookend these episodes, I find myself thinking that I can’t believe how much has happened since he left.
“Moon Dance” is one of these episodes. I’ve seen it more times than I could count, and every time I find myself shocked that it’s only 22 minutes long; it really is an emotional rollercoaster. Frasier deftly ducks out to take Frederick to Williamsburg in the cold open, yet it doesn’t feel at all offbeat to find Niles in his apartment in his absence- in fact, he’s here to bemoan his lack of a social life. Niles and Maris have separated, and he’s become privy to rumors and photos of Maris seeing other men. Martin, honestly an adorably patient dad, suggests Niles put himself out there and have some more self-confidence.
The next day punctuates Niles’ extremely social circle: he’s already in the living room when Martin, Daphne, and Eddie return from a walk. He’s practically giddy when he asks his dad if he’s free on Saturday.  Martin can barely get out his “yeah, why?” before Niles blurts out “well I’m not, I have a date!”. He’s taking an acquaintance, Marjorie, out to their social club’s annual dance (“rumors persist about her husband’s death, but hey, a date’s a date!”). Considering it’s the catalyst of the entire episode, the subject of dancing comes up incredibly naturally- of course it would never consider to Niles that he might actually have to dance at this dance (“Maris always hated public displays of rhythm”), and of course Daphne would offer to give him some lessons. Everything that happens in this episode makes for great TV and it’s also really just exactly what all of these people would do.
David Hyde Pierce has said that he didn’t expect anyone to like Niles, but he just has that extra ounce of innocence and integrity that earns him my sympathy when Frasier doesn’t. The dancing lessons start out harmlessly, not that Niles could be anything but. At first, he’s not even having that good a time: “this is boring, yet difficult” (the one-liners just keep coming and they’re too good not to highlight). But of course, after a couple drinks he can’t get enough of this quality time with Daphne. While she runs off to get another CD, Marjorie calls, cancelling their date. Martin apologizes to his son but heads off to bed before he can see Niles, tempted by the close contact of the samba, neglect to tell Daphne that he no longer needs the lessons.
Tumblr media
The next day Martin is properly confused, then concerned, when Niles has bought several new CDs for that night’s dancing lessons. In a quick aside, Martin tells Niles that he’s “sticking a fork in the toaster” by spending this intimate time with Daphne, which is instantly met with “well my muffin’s stuck!”. But when Daphne is back in earshot, Niles does the right thing and tells her about the cancelled date. Of course, his strength can only hold out for so long when Daphne offers to go to the ball with him herself. There’s no dishonesty in the situation anymore, and besides, she says she would have a great time.
Cue Frasier’s timely return from his visit with Frederick on the night of the dance. He’s his usual unpleasant self, announcing to Martin that he’s still on vacation and doesn’t want to hear a word from his family until tomorrow. The good news: he’s the butt of this joke, as the doorbell rings and Daphne, dressed to the nines, runs to answer it, excitedly declaring that her date has arrived. Of course, it’s Niles and the two head out, arm in arm, with Frasier’s jaw on the floor. Who could explain the situation? Certainly not Martin, who’s been forbidden to speak to him for the night.
At this point in the story, we’ve had some fun with Niles and Daphne, and Frasier has returned to bookend the episode. It could end here, and I’d feel satisfied, but we still have to go to the dance! This is when the silly and whimsical takes a turn for the emotional and poignant. Niles and Daphne arrive at the dance to many an apologetic look and anecdote about who has recently seen Maris where and with which attractive man. But soon, Daphne pulls Niles onto the dance floor and the fruit of their labor is on full display.
They take it one step further by attempting a tango, something they never worked on at home, but which Daphne insists Niles will love- after all, their bodies have to touch the entire time. Caught up in the heat of the moment, Niles declares that he adores Daphne as he twists and spins her around the dance floor, which at this point is all theirs. He claps a hand over his mouth as soon as he says it, but Daphne responds that she adores him too. Shocked but clearly elated, Daphne and Niles finish what has become an award-winning dance, and even share a kiss on the lips before landing in their final pose. This must be it, right? They danced, they shared some powerful words, they kissed, and it all happened so naturally.
Tumblr media
Niles is visibly blown away from the electricity of the moment, sitting down and barely even able to get a word out. They talk giddily about how everyone there was watching them, when Daphne revels over the fact that not only is Niles a great dancer, he’s also an impressive actor. The wind is kicked right back out of Niles’ sails as Daphne explains that they were doing a bit, going the extra mile to get Niles his street cred back amongst his peers. Niles lets this sink in, then, physically and emotionally drained by the most loaded tango I’ve ever seen, decides that it’s time to go.
When Daphne makes a quick run to the bathroom, a female acquaintance approaches Niles and gives him her card- in case he ever wants to go dancing again. Niles is very civil with her and is flattered by the offer, but when Daphne returns, he leaves the card on the table with no intention of taking it with him. Yet, as they make for the door, Daphne praises Niles for stepping out of his comfort zone tonight: “and to think you almost didn’t come. It’s a shame when people let fear stop them from trying something new.” Niles is struck by this, and excuses himself to return to their table and put the woman’s business card in his jacket pocket. In a layered closing line, Niles holds his arm out to Daphne; “I’m ready now”.
I think of this episode so fondly, and it is such a sound reminder that sitcoms can have depth, substance, and heart. And it did it all without its title character! Any time I want to think, laugh, and feel, all in 22 minutes, Frasier is my go-to. And I haven’t even gotten to say anything about the queer undertones that impact the entire show without ever being brought to the surface, so I’m sure I’ll be back another time with much more Frasier.

1- A pediatra by Andréa del Fuego

(www.goodreads.com)

6 -Pursuit: An Inspector Espinosa Mystery
When his daughter disappears and a patient emerges as the prime suspect, a troubled psychiatrist comes to Espinosa for help, in the fifth novel in the beguiling Brazilian crime series A hospital psychiatrist feels he’s being stalked by a young patient. For as long as possible, he convinces himself that the young man is harmless, but when the doctor’s daughter disappears and the patient goes missing, too, he calls on Espinosa for help.
Soon after, the patient turns up dead. With his death begins a chain of other deaths, each more mysterious than the one that preceded it, each seemingly linked to the doctor and his former patient. As Espinosa learns more about the doctor’s history, it becomes harder to discern the stalker from the stalked, reality from fantasy, and the sane from the diabolical. In this installment of the “seductive, fascinating” (The New York Times Book Review) series, the sultry maze of Rio de Janeiro’s streets conspires against Espinosa, confounding his judgment, stymieing his search, and, somewhere, concealing a murderer.

7 A Breath of Life by Clarice Lispector, Johnny Lorenz (Translator), Benjamin Moser (Preface by)
A mystical dialogue between a male author and his creation, this posthumous work has never before been translated, and is a book of particular beauty and strangeness.
A mystical dialogue between a male author (a thinly disguised Clarice Lispector) and his/her creation, a woman named Angela, this posthumous work has never before been translated. Lispector did not even live to see it published.
At her death, a mountain of fragments remained to be “structured” by Olga Borelli. These fragments form a dialogue between a god-like author who infuses the breath of life into his creation: the speaking, breathing, dying creation herself, Angela Pralini. The work’s almost occult appeal arises from the perception that if Angela dies, Clarice will have to die as well. And she did. (https://www.barnesandnoble.com)
8 The Words That Remain by Stênio Gardel, Bruna Dantas Lobato (Translator)
"Disarmingly tender and feverishly sad, Gardel's love story is a delirium of a novel that reminds its readers of an uncomfortable truth: that even a life of regret can be a beautiful one."—Patrick Nathan, author of Some Hell
Longlisted for the 2023 National Book Award in Translated Literature
A letter has beckoned to Raimundo since he received it over fifty years ago from his youthful passion, handsome Cícero. But having grown up in an impoverished area of Brazil where the demands of manual labor thwarted his becoming literate, Raimundo has long been unable to read. As young men, he and Cícero fell in love, only to have Raimundo’s father brutally beat his son when he discovered their affair. Even after Raimundo succeeds in making a life for himself in the big city, he continues to be haunted by this secret missive full of longing from the distant past. Now at age seventy-one, he at last acquires a true education and the ability to access the letter. Exploring Brazil’s little-known hinterland as well its urban haunts, this is a sweeping novel of repression, violence, and shame, along with their flip side: survival, endurance, and the ultimate triumph of an unforgettable figure on society’s margins. The Words That Remain explores the universal power of the written word and language, and how they affect all our relationships.

9 Selected Crônicas by Clarice Lispector
"In 1967, Brazil's leading newspaper asked the avant-garde writer Lispector to write a weekly column on any topic she wished. For almost seven years, Lispector showed Brazilian readers just how vast and passionate her interests were. This beautifully translated collection of selected columns, or crônicas, is just as immediately stimulating today and ably reinforces her reputation as one of Brazil's greatest writers. Indeed, these columns should establish her as being among the era's most brilliant essayists. She is masterful, even reminiscent of Montaigne, in her ability to spin the mundane events of life into moments of clarity that reveal greater truths."—Publishers Weekly (www.goodreads.com)
10 Água Viva by Clarice Lispector
Lispector at her most philosophically radical. A meditation on the nature of life and time, Água Viva (1973) shows Lispector discovering a new means of writing about herself, more deeply transforming her individual experience into a universal poetry. In a body of work as emotionally powerful, formally innovative, and philosophically profound as Clarice Lispector’s, Água Viva stands out as a particular triumph. (www.goodreads.com)

Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian bossa nova singer best known for The Girl from Ipanema, has died aged 83.
One of Brazil's biggest stars of the 1960s and 70s, she recorded 16 albums and worked with artists ranging from Quincy Jones to George Michael.
Her version of The Girl From Ipanema sold more than five million copies and helped to popularise bossa nova.
Sofia Gilberto, the artist's granddaughter, broke the news of her death on Instagram.
"I'm here to bring you the sad news that my grandmother became a star today, and is next to my grandfather João Gilberto," wrote Sofia, who is also a musician.
"She was a pioneer and the best. At the age of 22, she gave voice to the English version of Girl from Ipanema and gained international fame."
Paul Ricci, a New York-based guitarist who collaborated with Gilberto, also confirmed the news on Facebook.
"I just got word from her son Marcelo that we have lost Astrud Gilberto," he wrote. "He asked for this to be posted.
"She was an important part of ALL that is Brazilian music in the world and she changed many lives with her energy. RIP from 'the chief', as she called me."
The BBC has contacted Gilberto's representatives for official confirmation.

Brazilian Bossa Nova and Samba singer Astrud Gilberto and her band performing at SOB's nightclub in New York in 1993
Born Astrud Evangelina Weinert in Bahia, she moved to Rio de Janeiro at an early age and took musical inspiration from her mother's side of the family, where "almost everyone played an instrument".
In her mid-teens, she fell in with a group of young people she described as a "musical clan", whose members included the famous singer Nara Leao and acclaimed guitarist João Gilberto, who helped create bossa nova.
Astrud and João married a few months after meeting, and it was their relationship that accidentally gave rise to her recording career.
Uncredited vocals
In 1963, she accompanied her husband to New York to help him as a studio translator while he cut an album with jazz legend Stan Getz.
When the band came to record the English lyrics for The Girl From Ipanema, they needed a vocalist - and Gilberto shyly suggested she could handle the task.
"Producer Creed Taylor said he wanted to get the song done right away and looked around the room," engineer Phil Ramone told Jazzwax in 2012.
"Astrud volunteered, saying she could sing in English. Creed said, 'Great.' Astrud wasn't a professional singer, but she was the only victim sitting there that night."
Although she had little time to prepare, Gilberto's detached but sultry vocals perfectly captured the vibe of a "tall and tan and young and lovely" girl who turns the heads of everyone she passes.
The song was an instant hit and went on to win the Grammy Award for record of the year.
Gilberto wasn't credited on the track (which was released under the name Stan Getz and João Gilberto) and she only received the standard $120 session fee for her performance.
However, it was the springboard for a successful solo career, beginning with 1965's The Astrud Gilberto Album, where she re-joined Ipanema's co-writer, Antonio Carlos Jobim, to record a suite of Brazilian standards.
Speaking to The Independent last year, her son Marcelo claimed that Gilberto struggled with the objectification she received from the press, and often had to fight misogyny in the music industry.
Writing on her website in the early 2000s, Gilberto recalled how several people had claimed responsibility for her success with Ipanema, with Stan Getz saying he had rescued her from being a "housewife".
"Nothing is further from the truth," she wrote. "I guess it may them look 'important' to have been the one that had the 'wisdom' to recognize talent or 'potential' in my singing… I suppose I should feel flattered by the importance that they lend to this, but I can't help but to feel annoyed at the fact that they resorted to lying!"
In the 1970s, she began writing her own songs, as showcased on albums like Astrud Gilberto Now (1972) and That Girl From Ipanema (1977).
Tumblr media
On the latter, she achieved a lifetime ambition by recording one of her songs, Far Away, as a duet with legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker.
Alongside recording, she developed a second strand to her career, acting in the films The Hanged Man and Get Yourself a College Girl and recording the soundtrack for The Deadly Affair, arranged by Quincy Jones.
In the early 1980s, Gilberto formed a group that featured her son Maeclo on bass and toured the world, but she largely avoided playing in Brazil, where she felt she had not been afforded the recognition she deserved.
"Brazil turned its back on her," Marcelo told The Independent. "She achieved fame abroad at a time when this was considered treasonous by the press."
In Europe, she recorded an album of samba classics with James Last; and George Michael sought her out to duet on a version of Desafinado for charity album Red Hot + Rio in 1996.
She recorded her final album, Jungle, in 2002, after which she announced an indefinite hiatus from public performance, having previously said that being "close to the public was frightening".
The singer devoted most of her later years to campaigning against animal cruelty, but the legacy of her first recording lived on, with everyone from Frank Sinatra and Madonna to Amy Winehouse and Nat King Cole offering their own interpretations of Gilberto's performance.

Note
for the emoji oc ask, for anton (or whoever pops into your head first!): 🌌🚲🎀✏❄🍓
🌌 - Anton
Anton was actually inspired by a game of Pokemon Crystal Clear (Pokemon Crystal rom hack, very fun, look it up!). Started off as just one of the save files I was playing and then going "Hm, but what if I make an OC", and he eventually just started existing. Definitely a lot more changed from the initial concept for him, he used to be just a less smug Pokespe Gold, but then the PLA brainrot set in, and then the Submas brainrot set in, and then everything just becomes a big dark void after that, and now here we are! Also, first thing I decided about him was he worked on the Magnet Train, because in Crystal Clear I went everywhere on foot, no fly, and that had me riding the train a lot because I challenged all the gyms via a randomizer for an added challenge!
🚲 - Anton
Yup! Anton owns a bike while he's living in Goldenrod, he'll usually uses it to ride to work, usually when he's running late or he feels like he could use a bit of exercise. The rare time he has to leave Goldenrod, like to go visit his family or run a favor for Gold, he'll take his bike to make the drip easier if he can't catch another form of transport.
🎀 - Anton/Samba/Fau
Getting all the goobers together for this one-
Anton, I could see easily somewhere in the worlds of Ace Attorney or Ghost Trick, though he'd likely end up being a wrongly accused defendant or a victim in need of saving knowing his luck! Samba, absolutely could fit in Professor Layton, to him, his work is like putting a puzzle together to reach conclusions, and he has enough of an odd touch of whimsy to him to fit right in the world. One Piece also feels like a fun pick for him, give him a bumblebee Zoan devil fruit for fun, because why not. Fau feels like she'd be right at home in One Piece as well, slap some Armament Haki on that girl's fists and let 'er rip. Also Fullmetal Alchemist, I feel like she would just have a lot of interesting relationships between other characters!
✏ - Anton
A lotta parts of "Hi Ren" by Ren reminds me a lot of this boy, especially the first verse, makes me think of part of his inner conflicts and how he feels like Cinder views him.
Hi there Ren It's been a little while Did you miss me? You thought you’d buried me, didn't you? Risky… Because I always come back Deep down you know that… Deep down you know I'm always in periphery Ren aren't you pleased to see me? it's been weeks since we spoke bro, you know you need me You’re the sheep, I'm the shepherd Not your place to lead me Not your place to be biting off the hand that feeds me
❄ - Anton/Fau
Anton feels like he does come off as cold to others, since he's at least aware that the way he outwardly emotes with his face can be difficult to read at times, and his voice doesn't often have much inflection. In reality, people often find him awkwardly endearing, especially if they can get him on a tangent about certain subjects. And while he doesn't emote as much with his face, his body language is often quite expressive for him, though like with many things, he doesn't quite notice that well. For Fau, she's actually more opposite where she feels like she comes across to people as very caring and dedicated, while most people tend to think she's got a bit of a ruthless and harsh personality. She can be rough outwardly, but that's just the mama bear instincts in full throttle.
🍓 - Anton/Samba
Anton's not particularly picky about food unless it comes to meat, or if it's something very bitter; he enjoys fruits and veggies/berries a normal amount. If he had to pick, he likes sweet cantalopes and corn on the cob most, and enjoys a good Occa or Kasib berry when used in pastries. Samba has an insatiable sweet tooth, rejecting any and all veggies unless it comes paired with a sweet sauce to drown out the veggie taste. His favorites are gala apples and tomatoes, with his favorite berry being Watmel.

Cartola - Verde Que Te Quiero Rosa [1977]
Photography: Ivan Klingen. Art Direction: Ney Tavora.
It’s wild to think about how much of the culture around Music history highlights European classical music as the pinnacle of performance, considering how half a world away, an increasingly exciting musical tradition was being defined simultaneously.
Across the middle passage, enslaved people were targets of systemic cultural erasure, separating groups with common languages and ancestry, banning drums and generally disencouraging the concept of a black tradition through brutally violent means.
Nevertheless, Black communities in the so-called new world are rife with the traditions of our ancestors, their rhythms live on in the music that fills our streets, moulting and morphing into new evolutions of the same vibrations that carried us thus far, and carry us still.
Having lost all else, Enslaved people ensured their legacy would be indomitable and inimitable by passing on their culture, entrusting their descendants would carry it to the fullest extent. No better example exists of this than Cartola, a Brazilian sambista who was one of the pioneers of the genre, responsible for the dirty work of ensuring samba deserved the respect that evaded it for so long.
Angenor Da Oliveira grew up in Mangueira, an up-and-coming favela in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, working from the age of 15 in any and every job available to support his passion, Love, Music, and Drinking, commonplace values of the Bohemian lifestyle that brings Samba to life. His commitment to this lifestyle left him living on the street at age 18, after being thrown out by his father, who, like many Brazilians at the time, looked down upon the genre and the malandragem that surrounded it.
This scene, replete with people who find and use any advantage in every situation, was where Cartola met his musical partner and lifelong friend Carlos Cachaca. Them and a few other musicians founded the Primera Estacao Samba School, where they took Samba from being “Low-Value music” to becoming a staple at every carnaval and parade both across the country by the 1940’s, and subsequently creating the cultural backdrop for the emergence of Bossa Nova in the following decades.
However, thanks to dwindling financial success, a few failed friendships, a long illness for cartola and a short one that took his first wife; Cartola found himself ousted from the Samba scene he helped create a few years before, until an unlikely romance reignited his passion for life and music, opening a bar in Mangueira with the love of his life, Dona Zica. This establishment, aptly named Zicartola, became the centre of Samba in the 1950’s and introduced Cartola to musicians who were a generation ahead of his, transcending a genre he helped to create.
Better late than never, Cartola began recording his own music in 1974, at age 66. Like a fine wine, his music brims with an authenticity and emotion that cannot be understated, and you can feel the life he’s lived and the impact it has had on all of us through the music. The portrait presented in his 1977 album Verde Que Te Quiero Rosa is particularly emblematic of his relevance, with the iconic green cup and pink saucer, the traditional colors of Mangueira and heavily featured by Cartola in his life. Poetic and Prophetic, This portrait is best summed up with the lyrics from “Pranto de Poeta”
“Em Mangueira Quando morre
Um poeta Todos choram
Vivo tranquilo em Mangueira porque
Sei que alguém há de chorar quando eu morrer”
