messy af wip for older book!hiccup what do we think

One thing I haven't seen people talk about in the HTTYD books is how Alvin and Hiccup actually have a lot in common. Alvin (as far as I can remember) is the only person besides Hiccup who even tries to speak Dragonese, he's got Latin down too, he lacks the huge belly and muscles and beard of most Vikings, he's also more inclined to use cleverness over brute force and strength, etc. When you stop to think about it, Alvin shares a lot of Hiccup's strengths.

This is a common thing for foils, and it works really well in these books. Those similarities emphasize their differences--they highlight the fact that what makes Hiccup a hero is not just his cleverness and smallness and knowledge and all the other things that set him apart from the other Vikings, it's the choices he makes, the friendships he gathers, the character he develops. Alvin has much of the same cleverness and skills as Hiccup, but the two of them use it so differently, and that's what distinguishes them. That's what makes Hiccup become a hero while Alvin becomes more and more twisted.

i havent reread the books in a long while but it's so funny seeing excerpts of hiccup encountering romance. that kid fucking Hates that shit. he's barely holding himself back from strangling fishlegs for waxing poetic abt his latest crush. he's rolling his eyes and making "get on with it" gestures at every adult who sings songs abt it. aro icon of our generation truly <3

I haven’t read the books, but I want to include Camicazi in my Mer!AU. From what I’ve seen of her in the fandom, she’s basically an agent of chaos that doesn’t feel bad for what she says and does. I’m kind of writing her as a feral gremlin.

Is that about right? Any other character analysis that I should know about?

This may be kinda dumb but by any chance do you have a reference of some kind for how you draw Camicazi’s hair (other than by going off the book illustrations)? I love how you draw her so much!

You are so kind omg. 😭🙏 (and this isn’t a dumb question!!)

I don’t use any references when I draw her hair, but I do have some things I tend to do when drawing her!

-I always give her a flyaway strand at the front because I think it makes her look cool.

-I like to poof the hair up and away from her face so that she can see when fighting (or insulting people lol) it’s easier to see in a side view, but in a front view I indicate some volume with some lines going away from her face in odd directions.

-Sometimes I draw little braids on the side of her head, but those are harder to do from a front view lol

I also like to stick with a vaguely diamond-like shape for the entirety of the hair (the shorter bits poof out more and the longer bits get heavier so they stretch out a little longer)

then I go around it with these little varied squiggly lines
