10. If 911 was a supernatural show, how would your favorite storyline be rewritten? (Ex: the tsunami storyline would be due to mermaids or a evil witch targeting the 118 coven or some shit)
Would love to hear your thoughts on this because I adore supernatural/magic AUs!
okay now i'm REALLY glad i only shared one idea the first time lmfao
okay, so. buck & maddie are merfolk. as a coming of age ritual, they are permitted to walk the earth as humans for a year and a day. if, after that day, they choose to stay on the surface, they're never permitted to return to their society. in addition, should they ever touch even a drop of seawater again, they'll be transformed back into merfolk permanently & cursed to wander the oceans alone for the rest of their lives.
after maddie leaves, she doesn't come back (*cough*doug*cough*), so when buck is finally allowed on land, he goes looking for. he searches for his entire year, and when he isn't successful, he decides to stay on land, rather than give up the search. he settles in LA, joins the LAFD, and hires a PI.
fast forward, he finds maddie, she escapes doug, and everything in season 2 largely plays out the same way.
then. the tsunami.
as soon as buck sees it coming, he knows what's going to happen to him. he doesn't care. he has christopher to protect, and having his tail will enable him to do it, even if it means he'll be alone the rest of his life. he really, really tries not to think about it. he keeps christopher safe, but when the water recedes, it takes him with it. he's swept back into the ocean, but christopher is safe on top of the firetruck, so he's okay with it.
he thinks maddie will probably figure out what happened, so he hangs around the ruins of the santa monica pier, determined, at least, to say goodbye
it's not maddie that finds him, though, it's eddie, who heard exactly what happened from christopher and, as soon as he could, went searching for buck.
buck explains, eddie insists there has to be something they can do, but there isn't. he lets the tide go out without him and sits on the sand with eddie, resolved to spend his last few hours on the surface with the love of his life his best friend, and to return to the sea when the tide reaches them again.
it's very sad. eddie kisses him because he's never going to get the chance again (and he's maybe, a little bit, hoping there's something to the whole 'true love's kiss' thing. there's not). it's incredibly unfair and buck doesn't want to go, and then--
seconds before the tide would have wet his tail again, he turns back into a human
TURNS OUT this world has h2o rules (more or less) and that, long ago, the leaders of his society lied about what happens when you return to the ocean to discourage people from leaving permanently. nobody wanted to test it, so eventually everyone believed it as fact, and the knowledge of the lie was lost.
buck is very very happy to have human legs again (although they still include the leg that was crushed under the firetruck), he and eddie are weird for approximately 48 hours, before figuring shit out and spending the rest of their lives together. the end!
(send me a spooky 911 ask?)
#this got LONG whoops!#once upon a time i was going to write this au and then i never did so here it is!#abbie answers#frida tag#thank you for the ask!

As of March 14, 08:00 EST, it has been 103,164,192 Minecraft Days since the earliest known approximations of π. If we consider a Minecraft year to be 365 days, that's 282,641.6 years! Alternatively, that is 2,826.4 centuries!

For me, my October pie baking fest is like therapy. It’s always a good way to spend the day and work out frustrations, anger and sadness. The kind I am feeling these days because of the war and devastation in Israel.
It was difficult to find the kind of apples I like this year. Because there was an early frost, none of the orchards I usually go to had Rhode Island Greening apples, the best pie apples on earth. After some delays and some connections from someone who knew someone who knew someone else who knew someone who had an orchard in Rhode Island, I got a bushel of them!
I’m grateful and happy for that at least.
Here are some photos showing the steps to my pie baking: the baked pie but first: peel-core-slice; roll the dough; place the filling inside the bottom crust; cover the pies (one of mine had a streusel top); place second piece of rolled dough on top of fruit; add a dab or two of milk (makes the crust brown in spots) and bake.
Voila! PIE!
If you prefer a streusel top, look here.

LILY VAIL’S (MY MOM’S) APPLE PIE
CRUST:
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon grated fresh lemon peel, optional
1/2 cup cold butter
1/3 cup cold vegetable shortening
1/4 cup cold milk, juice, water or melted ice cream, approximately (add more as needed)
apple filling
To make the crust: Combine the flour, sugar, salt and lemon peel, if used, in a large bowl. Cut the butter and shortening into chunks and add the chunks to the flour mixture. Work the fat into the flour mixture until the ingredients resemble crumbs (use your hands, a pastry blender or the pulse feature of a food processor). Add the liquid, using only enough to gather pastry into a soft ball of dough (start with 1/4 cup). Cut the dough in half and flatten each half to make a disk shape. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it stand at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375F. Lightly flour a pastry board or clean work surface. With a rolling pin, roll one half of the dough on the floured surface into a circle about 1/8-inch thick, making sure the circle is larger than the pie pan by about 1 inch. Place the dough in a 9” or 10” pie pan. Pour the apple filling into the pastry-lined pan. Cut the butter into small pieces and place on top of the filling. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling. Gently press the bottom and top crusts together along the flared edge of the pie pan. For a fluted rim, press your thumb and index finger against the outside of the rim, or crimp it with the tines of a fork or the blunt side of a knife. Cut steam vents in the top crust with the tip of a sharp knife or the tines of a fork. Bake the pie for about an hour or until golden brown.
Apple Filling:
3 pounds pie apples (Rhode Island Greenings, Granny Smith, Gravenstein, Northern Spy, Golden Delicious, Idared, Stayman, Winesap, Baldwin, Jonagold)
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon butter
Peel and core the apples then cut them into slices. Place the slices in a bowl. Add the 1/2 cup sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and flour and toss the ingredients to coat the apple slices evenly.

Happy Pi Day 3.14
Pi (π) is a mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. This ratio is constant for all circles, regardless of size, and is approximately equal to 3.14159. Pi is an irrational number, meaning it cannot be expressed exactly as a ratio of two integers, and its decimal representation never ends nor repeats. It is also a transcendental number, indicating…

i first started this blog as a way to try and document the different dishes i made, and to jot down recipes that i threw together whenever they ended up being tasty so that i could recreate them in the future. i haven't been very consistent -- with the blog, at least. i love to take photos and write down approximate recipes of the food i make, although the recipes end up scattered in random notebooks, whatsapp messages to my mother, and in my iphone notes app. more recently, i've been following written recipes rather than putting things together based on cravings and inspiration while making grocery lists. i'm proud to be at a point where i feel confident enough in cooking techniques and my own palette to improvise a variety of dishes. but this year, especially this ramadan, i've been enjoying consulting cookbooks and online recipes again. the recipes i've followed most often this month have been the ones mamma wrote down for me for my birthday.
the small, laminated pages resemble flashcards on a key ring. pale blue with colourful text and little illustrations of spices, cutlery, snacks. she took great pride in designing (canva) and printing (her local copyshop) these recipe cards for me herself! my favourite curries, desserts, hedhikaa, and a few odd recipes that she treasures herself make up these recipes, and it has made me so happy to flip through it and hear her familiar voice instructing me from the pages. this month, i've also called up dhondhatha, mamma's oldest sister, to ask for her bajiya recipe. for a while now, i've felt inspired to practice more maldivian cooking. cooks from around the world, but particularly palestinian cooks and bakers, inspire me to learn about and preserve my national cuisine. every day, it feels more urgent, with the rising tide of westernisation on one hand and the literal tides of sea-level rise on the other threatening to wash away our culture. i would love to someday travel from island to island in the maldives, tasting and cooking the dishes unique to each one. every week, there are messages on the family whatsapp about a relative or family friend passing away. cancer and other terminal illnesses seem so pervasive among maldivians. i can't help but feel hyperaware of the loss of the oldest living generation of my people.
anyway, i recently started reading samin nosrat's 'salt, fat, acid, heat' (another birthday gift from mamma). i loved the netflix series when it first came out, and have been wanting to get my hands on the book for a couple of years now. i'm only a dozen or two pages in, but it's already such a wonderful read! starting this book is what made me want to start writing about my relationship to food and cooking myself. i want to use this blog as a space to reflect on the lessons i've learned about food and cooking, the recipes and techniques, the inspiration, travelling, the politics of food... the list goes on! for a start, i would definitely like to dedicate one blog post just to my evolution as a home cook and baker. i feel so lucky to live in a big city, where i can try foods from all over the world just by hopping on a train or bus. more to come!
also, i just realised it's pi day 🥧

Okay, so, when I made this post, one of my courses just went over Monte Carlo integration and I was reminded of a video where someone calculated pi with redstone using it, so I thought it'd be fun to try something like that
So, what I did is took the random numbers, removed the decimal point if there was one, and put "0." at the beginning, giving a bunch of pairs of numbers between 0.1 and 1 (at least one person gave a complex number, so i just took its norm and went from there)
Then I plotted those points alongside a quarter of the unit circle
The area of the "box" that numbers can be in is 0.99, and the area of the "quarter circle" is pi/4. So the chance that a point is inside of the circle is just the area of the quarter circle (-0.01 because the numbers can't be less than 0.1) divided by the area of the box
Using this, the ratio of dots inside the circle to dots outside of the circle is approximately (pi/4)-0.01, which we can rearrange to get pi≈4((number of dots inside quarter circle)/(total number of dots)+0.01). Plugging in the numbers we got, pi≈4((37/49)+0.01), or pi≈3.0604
Anyways, happy pi day
I wanna try something. Reblog/comment/send an ask/whatever with two random numbers
I'll share the result in two weeks
#not reblog#i'm just reading off of the notes that i took when i actually did this because i knew i'd be busy around this time#so i apologize for the poor explanation/any mistakes i made#wikipedia#pi day

Ha! Happy National #HammockDay!
Today, July 22, 2024, is National Hammock Day!
*What a fantastic place to think about π in (see what I did there? Fun Fact, because… … Pi Approximation Day is observed on July 22 (22/7 in the day/month format), since the fraction 22⁄7 is a common approximation of π, which is accurate to two decimal places and dates from Archimedes.)
