I just binged-watch Hellboy’s animated movies and I gotta say -
General Reaction and Expectations: The movies were fine. I don’t feel too bad about wasting a total of two hours of my times with them. But at the same time, I also wouldn’t put the movies in a high pedestal for cartoon movies. Iron and Blood ( 2007 ) is definitely better than Sword of Storms ( 2006 ) by a small margin.
I went into both movies knowing that Del Toro and Mignola were working on these projects together. They even got the same live-actions actors to do the voice acting of their respective character. So, my expectations were: Hellboy having some semblance of the Hellboy in the Del Toro live-action movies. In the end, I was pleased to see that the animated movies were leaning towards the comic-depiction of the entire characters.
I was also expecting for the two movies to connect to a larger story since the Hellboy team ( or maybe just Google ) dubbed these two movies as part of this “ Hellboy Animated Series. ” However, it seems like Sword of Storms had a different direction going. It feels like a clumsy patchwork of all short-stories in Hellboy’s comics - specifically the ones that are pertaining to the Japanese folklore, merged into one plot. It didn’t seem to be setting up for anything, really. The Iron and Blood on the other hand, I thought had a better set-up for an actual series. ( Unfortunately, no movie came after it. )
Onto the Ramblings: The movies do a great job in establishing the B.P.R.D.’s environment and HQ - this includes the process, briefings, and team dynamic. Del Toro’s live-actions movies never did capture the essence of an actual agency. It was just a normal office. Normal briefing. The usual technological research room. It’s a great tidbit that the veteran or experienced agents are so used to Hellboy’s shenanigans such as his random disappearing off-the-planet acts. B.P.R.D. agents even took a picture of him in the iceberg, lmao. To be honest, I learned more about B.P.R.D. than ever. They were funded by the government and sometimes need to kiss ass - so they could still have the budget. Hellboy and his squad were treated almost like celebrities with how spectacular their work is in the occult industry.
I thought the character designs of the movies were almost close to the comics. Hellboy has a completely different design - it was conceptualised by someone in deviantart.com which I don’t mind - but I wish I got to see the Hellboy’s OG design in animation. I just think it’s pretty unique and I like how his design contrasts the idea of a big surly half-demon man, okay? Also, in the movie’s design - he had tiny legs and a giant body, like what??? I’m glad the original actors in Del Toro’s movies are back - but I couldn’t help but feel the dialogue feels awkward sometimes? I’m not sure. It could be the script or just how they were delivered. Either way, I thought that the movies would have been more interesting if they explored other voice actors.
Sword of Storms felt like 80% filler. It’s like the air in the bag of chips. Almost every part without Hellboy in it was boring - and that’s about 80%. Hence, filler. It’s like they realised Hellboy could beat up these villains in 30 mins. on his own and now, they just need to lengthen the movie with a load of B.P.R.D. interactions. Again, I don’t mind this. But I think that’s why I thought the second movie was better because at least - everyone’s interactions made sense and are happening all at once with the story. Also, the flashbacks definitely flowed better in the Iron and Blood movie. It also had a pretty disturbing tale and imagery. I squirmed a lot throughout because I’m a straight-up wuss.
Another reason why I liked the second movie is because Professor Bruttenholm was present. I was really impressed at how clever and generous he is. He’s a well-mannered and meaningful guy. No wonder Hellboy turned out just fine. Professor Bruttenholm was depicted in his senile years and in his prime - super interesting to see. And again, we love to watch this old man kick monster ass. And I love the last scene of the second movie, it was very precious and heart-warming.
I like Hellboy’s portrayal in the movies. It also perfectly fits my current interpretation of him. He was every B.P.R.D. agent’s mature big brother - he looks after everyone. I also like that Hellboy is a touchy person - someone who loves giving hugs, hand and shoulder pats. He also hates psychics - he thinks they’re hacks. So, I’m definitely incorporating that to my Hellboy writing. Abe’s depiction was also cool! He fights real good and he took so much beating in the second movie. Lots of respect for him! As for Liz, I’m just glad she isn’t Hellboy’s girlfriend in this movie. I love that Kate Corrigan was included! She’s a great character and deserves more spotlight.
TL;DR: But yeah, in the end, both movies weren’t enough to satisfy me as a viewer. I might have to watch both movies again for a second opinion. But I can finally say, that yes, I will incorporate Hellboy’s animated movies into my portrayal.

Continuing on with my favorite animated merpeople...Abe Sapien, as voiced by Doug Jones (Abe in the live-action del Toro Hellboy films), starred alongside his BPRD comrades in two animated Hellboy films, produced by Guillermo del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola: “Sword of Storms” (2006) and “Blood and Iron” (2007). Abe’s visual appearance in these 2 animated films resembles more his look in the Hellboy comics, rather than how he appears in the 2 live-action films. Of these 2 animated works, Abe’s role is slightly larger and more significant in Sword of Storms, where he shares quite a few scenes with fellow BPRD agent Liz Sherman (voiced by Selma Blair -- the live-action Liz Sherman). Needless to say, Abe Sapien is by far my favorite character in the Hellboy universe, and one of my all-time favorite mermen!

Hellboy: Sword of Storms and Hellboy: Blood & Iron will be released together on 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and digital) on April 2 via Lionsgate. The animated films were produced between Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy and Hellboy II.
Del Toro serves as creative producer on both features, with Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola as consulting producer. Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, John Hurt, and Doug Jones reprise their roles from the live-action films.
2006's Hellboy: Sword of Storms is directed by Phil Weinstein, while 2007's Hellboy: Blood & Iron is directed by Victor Cook, with Tad Stones serving as supervising director on both.

Hellboy: Sword of Storms:
A folklore professor becomes unwittingly possessed by the ancient Japanese demons of Thunder and Lightning. But when The Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense dispatches a team of agents to investigate, a cursed samurai sword sends Hellboy to a supernatural dimension of ghosts, monsters, and feudal mayhem. Now, while pyrokinetic Liz Sherman and fishboy Abe Sapien battle one very pissed-off dragon, a lost and cranky Hellboy must find his way home. Even if he can survive the perilous journey, how much crap does a guy have to put up with from the two most vengeful and ferocious spirits of Japanese legend?
Hellboy: Blood & Iron:
When Hellboy, Liz Sherman, and Abe Sapien are assigned to investigate the ghost-infested mansion of a publicity-hound billionaire, they uncover a plot to resurrect a beautiful yet monstrous vampire from Professor Bruttenholm’s past. But before they can stop her bloodbath, Hellboy will have to battle harpies, hellhounds, a giant werewolf, and even the ferocious goddess Hecate herself. How much crap does a guy have to take from a Hungarian Blood Countess before he and his surrogate father can avenge the souls of the damned? It’s going to take more than just a horde of very pissed-off demons for our heroes to see the light.

Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms (2006)
The animated Hellboy adventure Sword of Storms was released to get people excited about the upcoming Hellboy II: The Golden Army. At this, it does a fine job. We're not talking cinema-level quality but if you’re watching this, it’s on TV or home video, paired up with the Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron so you get your money’s worth.
When Japanese folklore expert Professor Sakai discovers the Sword of Storms, an ancient weapon containing the demons of thunder and lightning, it could mean the end of the world. BPRD members Liz Sherman (voiced by Selma Blair), Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), and Hellboy (Ron Perlman) are sent to investigate.
Based on the comic by Mike Mignola and taking queues from Guillermo del Toro’s live-action films, the character designs and styles are their own. It’s not a bad thing but between the practical effects of the movies, the distinct style of the comic book and this, it’s my least favorite. You can tell compromises have been made to accommodate the animation studios and the limited budget. Overall the characters move with weight and the motions are fluid, but this is TV-quality stuff. You’ll notice, for example, that the BPRD insignia is not consistent from scene to scene and a couple of the computer-generated effects stick out. It's not a huge criticism, but worth noting.
Ron Perlman does well with the voice work, having done many animated films before. Doug Jones and Selma Blair are just ok. Sometimes they come off as a little wooden. On the upside, the story introduces a number of pleasant side characters - hopefully, we'll see prissy psychic Russell Thorne (Mitchell Whitfield) and troll expert Kate Corrigan (Peri Gilpin) again.
The strength of this hour-long animated adventure is its fairytale/mythical sense of reality and logic. The possessed Prof. Sakai throws Hellboy into a realm filled with Japanese monsters and seeing him confront one after another is fun. Rather than try and modernize or make them hip and cool, the story embraces the weirdness of Kappas and Yōkai. It's the right way to go about it. Folktales are weird, which can make them seem silly under the wrong light. This is also what can make them creepy or scary. When placed next to the already outlandish Hellboy, the steady flow of bizarre rules makes sense in the way only stories like this can.
Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms is nothing groundbreaking. As a way to pass the time, or as a means to get a little bit more of the character while you’re sitting on the couch - perhaps introducing the big red to young, potentially future fans, it’s fine. The film is short, it’s got cool action and plenty of monsters. You get what you want and expect. (On Blu-ray, April 23, 2019)

HBO Max New Releases: January 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It’s a new year and everyone wants to put the vile cesspool that was 2020 behind them. Thankfully, HBO Max is coming out swinging to make the transition out of the hellyear even easier. HBO Max’s list of new releases for January 2021 is positively packed with notable film releases and even a fun HBO Max Original or two.
For starters, Search Party season 4 will arrive to HBO Max on Jan. 14. This season of the show with a now-surprising lifespan finds Dory Sief in the thrall of a deranged stalker…right after getting off on murder charges. These Brooklynites lead such fascinating lives! The other major original or note is the HBO documentary Tiger, that premieres on Jan. 10 and will delve into the complicated history of golfing legend Tiger Woods.
The real story this month, however, are the movies. Perhaps emboldened by its success with Wonder Woman 1984, HBO Max is filling up its servers with as many Warner properties that it can find. The Dark Knight trilogy, Blade, Chinatown, The Exorcist, Mad Max: Fury Road, No Country for Old Men, and Pulp Fiction all arrive on Jan. 1. Poltergeist and Stephen King’s It (1990) make things spooky on Jan. 15. Then the month closes out with, quite simply, the greatest movie of all time: The Mummy (1999). The downside here is that some of these are limited engagements, with the aforementioned WW1984, Blade, Ocean’s Eleven, and more all leaving at month’s end.
Still, January 2021 will provide plenty of filmic fun on HBO Max. Here is the full list for your perusal.

In 2006, Tad Stones, the great Disney TV animator and creator of “Darkwing Duck”, produced the first of two Hellboy animated movies with “Storm of Swords”. The movie cast returned to voice their characters but the animated film was more in line with the comic book (i.e. Hellboy is a public figure). Extremely enjoyable and great addition to the Hellboy franchise....Hellboy Animated - Sword of Storms - trailer
