I honestly have always loved Rose Green x Abby Sideris (our fav bed & breakfast lesbians) from MHM because I ALWAYS (even 11 years old me) thought they were together, in no way do those two come across as just friends. Also, the absolute legendary vibe of the logical bill-payer and free-thinking fortune teller. Plus, I feel like it’s black cat and golden retriever energy but Abby is the dog and Rose is the cat.

Some less obvious ships…

I do love Deirdre x Nancy’s dynamic and ALL content that comes from it but to me, Nancy and Deirdre don’t always fit. HOWEVER, Nancy x Maya Nguyen would be my pick. All of The Final Scene is just Nancy screaming at people trying to get her girlfriend back. I wish we saw more of her. Adonis died in Aphrodite's arms. His blood mingled with her tears and became the Anemone flower. The Adonia  festival was already celebrated in Lesbos by Sappho's time in the 7th century BC,  became popular in Athens in mid-5th century  BC. Greek women, every year in midsummer, would plant  "gardens of Adonis", small pots containing fast-growing plants, which  they would set on top of their houses in the hot sun. The plants would  sprout, but soon wither and die. Then the women would mourn the death of  Adonis, tearing their clothes and beating their breasts in a public  display of grief. They would lay a statuette of Adonis out on a bier and then carry it to the sea along with all the withered plants as a funeral procession. The festival concluded with the women throwing the effigy of Adonis and the withered plants out to sea.... - wiki

In the French version, the book title focuses on the old train engine ("locomotive") that the Five discover on Mystery Moor, so you will find this visual heavily featured in the cover art!

Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):

George and her cousin Anne are spending their holiday at Captain Johnson's Riding School [la ferme de M. et Mme Girard], where George has a rivalry with another tomboy named Henrietta [Paulette], who prefers to be called "Henry" [Paul(e)] . Anne's brothers Julian and Dick come to join the girls and initially mistake Henry for a boy, much to George's chagrin.

Amidst horse rides on the moor, the Five encounter a group of gypsies determined to visit a desolate place called Mystery Moor [la Lande du Mystère].

An elderly blacksmith tells the children how gypsies, in the past, sabotaged a railway run by a family of sand miners, causing most of the family to mysteriously disappear when the moor was covered by a thick mist.

(An evening at the farm: Anne helps Mrs Johnson with the dishes while William [Pierre] (one of the kids from the riding school) struts away) [William is a good kid, really, just a little on the bragging side!]

The Five follow the gypsies to the moor, following signs left by Sniffer as well as the old railway tracks formerly used by the sand miners mentioned by the old blacksmith. They also find the old train engine formerly used by the miners, half buried in the sand and overgrown with heather and gorse.

On their first night camping on the moor, the Five hear a plane circling low over the area. Intrigued, they figure out over the next day that the gypsies had arranged a signal for the plane. The plane comes back the next night and drops several packages that the Five collect, discovering that they contain smuggled American banknotes, later revealed to be forgeries from France [England 🙃].

The Five decide to flee and hide the parcels before the travellers come to retrieve them. Unfortunately, a heavy mist falls on the moor and the kids get separated. The boys manage to hide the parcels in the old train engine while the girls lose their way and are taken prisoners and held in a cave. Thanks to Timmy, George manages to send a message to their friends Henry and William at the riding school.

Henry and William come to the girls' rescue with Sniffer’s assistance, while Dick and Julian, after an uncomfortable night on the foggy moor, finally find their way back to the riding school, where Mrs Johnson was just calling the police. Thankful for Sniffer’s help, George promises to reward him with a red bicycle and living in a house with a family.

1776: A Liveblogging

I am correcting a longstanding oversight in my media consumption habits by finally watching the movie version of 1776. Yeah, I know. I generally dislike and avoid musicals, especially film adaptations of stage musicals, and this will likely not change my mind about that. But since it's been memed to death I feel obligated to offer myself a crumb of context. Let us commence:

1. I am never going to get over the fact that Mr. Feeny is playing John Adams. That's Mr. Feeny.

2. Why do none of these dudes look like the people they're supposed to be playing.

3. Kinda sad that we weren't nearly as interested in defenestration as Prague, TBH.

4. Who smeared Vaseline on the lens? Yeah, see, this is the kinda musical number that doesn't work nearly so well in film as it does on stage.

5. Ugggggggggggghhhh

6. They really did Lewis Morris dirty with that wig.

7. I knew Teej was going to be horny in this musical, but I'm kinda impressed by how horny everyone else is too.

8. Yes this was the 70s, but dear God the costume choices are distracting.

9. I hate bad violin dubbing. I will say this certainly could have gone worse, but it ain't great. I am however very amused by the Frederic Pope situation they've got going on there. Dear God, is this where Francois Girard got the idea???

10. "We're Rich White Conservatives, Don't Expect Us to Have A Spine" is on point, but they really fell down on the cinematography for the corresponding dance number.

11. THIS IS NOT A GOOD SONG

12. We're really just gonna smash-cut to the Declaration from there? Okay.

13. Teehee, he said "egg".

14. This dude's fake Scottish accent is going to have me clawing at the walls. Please tell me this is not required in the script.

15. In fairness, dude's not wrong to be concerned about fishing rights...

16. This is the second time they've referenced the waltz in a musical that takes place in the 1770s.

17. Somebody really wants a cookie for this Henri Mancini rip-off number.

19. On a spiritual level this feels a little like watching Tim Curry singing "Anything Can Happen On Halloween".

24. This is the solemn, poetic ending to a musical that cannot possibly be the same as the polyester roller-coaster of bicentennial fanfic chaos that I just watched.

This was... a lot? It was a lot. I think I may have taken some psychic damage from all of the everything. Help.
