Hinterland by Tom Leighton Scars of human presence punctuate this hostile environment, where unknown chemical elements now surface from their captivity.

I want to take a moment of your time to preach the good word of The Long Dark. 'Liz,' you say, 'you talk about The Long Dark all the time.' That's true! As my favorite game, it's bound to be the one I talk about the most. But it is, and I do not say this lightly, absolutely incredible.
First off, let me say that this is technically a survival horror game. There are sudden flashing sequences that can trigger epilepsy and elements like graphic animal death, creeping horrors of starvation thirst temperature etc., and seeing frozen corpses around you knowing at some point you will become one of them. However: this game has an incredible range and you can set it to supremely easy (like I do) to the point where you can genuinely forget it's not just Survive In The Frozen Woods Simulator. You can adjust the settings to get the playthrough style you want, anywhere from scenic exploration of the many enormous regions and pensive hunting to heart-racing fights against bears and wolves stalking you across the map and wondering if you'll make it to shelter before freezing to death every time you leave.

This game is gorgeous. Many people are initially put off by the simpler style, but seeing a few sunrises & auroras and getting lost in blizzards a couple times usually changes their minds. Fluffy pastels and sweeping deep purples and grays make twilight absolutely beautiful and the green and pinks of auroras are stunning, especially if you happen to catch some blue. Go catch an aurora coming into Forsaken Airfield or from the top of Timberwolf Mountain and tell me I'm wrong.

You like foraging? We got foraging! Not only can you cook with ingredients and animals that you find, you can also cook up medicines and stat buffs. There are recipes hidden around that you have to work to be able to cook.
Tumblr media
There are of course a multitude of clothes that you can find and repair, but you can also make your own out of animal hides! #Canadian Wilderness Dressup Divas 2k24
Tumblr media
You want calm exploration? We got that too! Take a trip around the different regions to pay respect to all the gravesites if you like, or try to find the hundreds of cairns scattered around. Vague hints that point to secret stashes and the previous lives of people on the island? We got that too, pictures and notes and journals oh my.
Tumblr media
You want hard missions? We got an immortal glowing bear that stalks you across maps for that. We got run-from-the-top-of-one-region-to-the-bottom-of-another-without-getting-mauled-by-bears-or-wolves-or-moose challenges. We got a-blizzard-is-coming-so-you-gotta-stock-up-on-enough-supplies-to-outlast-it challenges. Zone of contamination and blackrock mine are. there. Don't even get me started on the faithful cartographer achievement, in which you fill out your map in every named place in the game.

You want storyline? We got storyline! Good luck!

Shout out to The Long Dark. A post apocalyptic survival game heavily focused on survival...without zombies or radiation.
Having some unrealistic animal depictions for the purpose of gameplay while being extremely open that that's the case from the beginning.
Being very open that some flashing lights in it when it's much more minor then some musicians with millions of followers on youtube music videos that have no warning. To the point that I have issues with flashing lights but don't need to take my meds with this game as long as I take a break after the flashing

this tree reminds me of my men. the rough skin makes people think they don't need affection. But that is not true. Even the hardest shell needs love and care, and even the toughest skin can sparkle in the sun when I lay hands on it, like Jesus once did. I also have a whip if that's what my men prefer

It um. Really fucking sucks when you wait ages for the first ever merch release from a company you actually like and want to support and then there's just... nothing in your size. At all. Not a single thing. God I'm fucking tired.

I honestly wish there was going to be more than five episodes of wintermute for the long dark. It still feels like we're at the beginning of the story.
SPOILERS FOR WINTERMUTE
-
For the first three episodes you have an average of two characters to interact with. You get three in episode one, two in episode two (along with your possible brief interaction with the forest talker). One of episode twos characters is from episode one so you only get to properly talk with one character the whole time. In episode three you're technically around more people, but you only have real conversations with two of them. Finally in episode four you get five new characters, three of whom are criminals that teeter between multi/dimensional and evil bad guys who do crime because fun.
The most variety we get of people is in episode four. I don't think this would be a problem if we got some more time with all the characters. I know wintermute is meant to serve as a kind of tutorial for survival mode, but I think it's narrative should be a bit more important considering no super new survival mechanics are introduced. At least in episode three you have to learn about timberwolves and experiment with some different weapons.
It feels like everything's going to be crammed into the last episode. We get hints of a narrative in the first two, but we don't get a whole lot of elaboration in the third and fourth. The only character you meet that seems to have any idea what's going on is completely absent from anything beyond episode two. Methuselah doesn't show up at all for Astrid, which I can think up some kind of explanation for. But he's nowhere to be seen in four when we're back with Mackenzie again.
There's also the player choices featured in the first two episodes. One is easily missable if you're just trying to follow the main plot. The other is commented on by another character as if it was one of many tests of your morals. They didn't have to include player choice in the narrative, but I feel like it opens up a lot of missed opportunities for how the survivors may be changing in this new kind of world.
I hope this long post doesn't sound like I'm complaining to much, but I genuinely care about the story hinterland is trying to tell in wintermute. It nowhere near as popular as survival mode but it's something I (and others I believe) are genuinely interesting. I hope episode five isn't the last that we're going to get of these characters and this story, because I think we'd be missing out on a lot of potential that way.
I love the long darks wintermute but it feels really cobbled together sometimes. I hope at some point in the future we get some edits to previous episodes to help fix some of the issues.
I don't think a whole lot of people are going to read this long post, but please talk with me and others about wintermute because I love to see peoples in depth takes on the story.
