Tucked away over the bridge by Acton Town station, this Museum Depot is one of west London’s best kept secrets. The Museum Depot at Acton holds the majority of the Museum’s collections which are not on display in the main Transport Museum in Covent Garden. This huge warehouse displays an emissive history of London's public transport. Here one can see how transport evolved. For example, originally bus drivers used to sit exposed to the weather on the outside of the carriage and steer the horses upfront. When engine driven buses came along they still had little cover for the driver, just a waterproof blanket to go around their legs. Eventually bus design would place the driver on top of the engine to keep them warm, a practise that went on for decades. It took a while to enclose the drivers seat in a glass section, as they wanted them to have an unobstructed view. Hollywood often uses its historic transport for shooting. Such as the 1930's trains, which were recently used as a film set for the Fantastic Beasts 3. The depot also has an extensive collection of its poster art, underground maps, and signage. I was amazing to see the high callable of artists Transport for London commissioned for its poster designs, e.g. David Hockney. Tours of the depot can be booked via their website. Old Royal Naval College. This listed building complex is at the heart of Maritime Greenwich and a World Heritage site (that also includes the Cutty Sark). Originally it was the site of Greenwich Palace that was built in 1443 and extended by Henry VIII. A palace for royalty to escape the filth of London, Henry VIII was born here, as well as Mary 1st and Elizabeth 1st, Henry also really getting to know Anne Boleyn here. It went into disrepair in the English Civil War before Charles II started to completely rebuild but never finished (all that time spent with his mistresses!?). It laid derelict and empty until Christopher Wren started to build Greenwich Hospital, the buildings we see today. Started 1694 and completed 1713. It was a hospital until 1869, then became the Royal Naval College from 1873 to 1998. The courtyard was also used in the film version of Les Miserables. Regular London firefighters being trained in the use of breathing apparatus in the yard of Brigade headquarters, Lambeth in 1940. Membership of the Fire Brigades Union rose from 3,000 in 1939 to almost 70,000 in 1942. In the first 22 nights of air raids during the Blitz, firefighters fought nearly 10,000 fires. To provide a unified service throughout the country, the National Fire Service (NFS) took control on 18 August 1941 when all the auxiliary fire services reorganised to form a new national service. The public's opinion of the fire service changed significantly as a result of the Blitz. During the 'Phoney War', firefighters had been thought of as 'army dodgers'. But, in 1940 this attitude changed –the firefighters became known as 'the heroes with grimy faces'. Tower of London . 3. The zenith of the castle’s use as a prison was the 16th & 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, Sir Walter Raleigh, & Elizabeth Throckmorton, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase “sent to the Tower”. Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture & death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists & 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin & John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures. . In the First & Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison & witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired, & the castle reopened to the public. Today, the Tower of London is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions.
