Concept sketches for HiveLight labs and the HiveLight team :) Pretend that aquarium is a terrarium instead in the last sketch.

Cress the HiveLight founder and A.P.I project leader. She's educated in all the interdisciplinary fields that are involved in robotics, but she specializes in artificial intelligence and deep learning. She plays the guitar whenever she needs a break from her work.

Ravi the solid light expert and designer, he was the genius that figured out how to turn photons into a solid form. He designs UIs, and software and makes visual designs for the stuff the HiveLight team invents. He was the main person responsible for HiveLight's interior design renovation, and he's a graffiti artist in his free time.

(Unnamed Crinoid) the information engineer, she specializes in making robots as autonomous as possible by giving them internal and environmental feedback, like senses.

Viking the mechatronics engineer. Viking is the one that works out how to engineer both electrical and mechanical systems for HiveLight's inventions. Basically, he builds things.

(Unnamed Frog) the computer engineer, they especially specialize in power electronics. They have invented the most effective solar cell panels on the market, which HiveLight sells (besides other gadgets) to keep their independent company afloat.

I want to give each team member one thing that they specialize in to really define their role on the team to make storytelling stuff easier. But It's hard, or kind of impossible, because many of the fields within robotics overlap with one another. It's good from a believability perspective, that means each one has some understanding of everyone's work and can work better together. But I really want that one thing that everyone can put their finger on and say "That's why you're useful. That's what you contributed to Api's creation".

So to try to summarizing their roles shortly:

Cress was responsible for his intellect.

Ravi gave him his force fields and holograms.

(Crinoid) gave him senses.

Viking built his body.

(Frog) gave him his power core and solar panels.

Ravi and Viking are the only designs I'm 100% happy with, I want to see if I can make myself like the other's designs more too. Mainly the crinoid and frog characters, I've redesigned Cress already.

Copy and paste description from an old post: A friend gave me the idea that I could work with a theme. Can you guess what it is? It's meant to be subtle, but I think I can implement it a bit more.

I imagined a blue and black color scheme since I didn't want to go with the typical white, sterile look that you see all the time in media. But that did make it look very dark and monochrome so I threw in some orange in there and I think it looks very eye-catching! And the plants make it look a lot homier.

I like this, this is a setting I'm actually excited to include in a comic! This whole lab setting is an aspect I've been afraid to approach because I had no idea how to make it interesting. It's fun to finally see where Api came from.

I gotta, like... make a roadmap for myself. Something like....

Make refs for Lot and Api for fun, and for the others if I feel like it.

Work on the script and storyboard simultaneously?? I have a rough, not very detailed script that I like, it lacks a 3rd act though.

Build HiveLight's interior in the Sims 4, and make concept art for all interiors to get a better grasp of their layouts. That would probably be good. THIS feels like such an obstacle though, depicting the environments and backgrounds. Ugh, it's been my white whale for years now.

Uhhh....

Work on side stuff when I need a break from the main project stuff. Like random doodles, Seeker Creatures and making refs for gaming fan characters.

Continuing my chronological series of work completed during the pandemic: On July 20th, I hopped on a boat and headed out for a five-day shoot on Smith Island, a remote spot at the south end of Maryland in middle of the Chesapeake Bay, along with the help of fellow photographer @hannelelahti. We were headed to this unique spot for Matchcoat Sojourner, a heritage foodway tour company that provides authentic experiences on the Eastern Shore. In the pandemic, @matchcoatsojourner is retooling its tours from group experiences to a new focus on couples and solo travelers, and needed new imagery to reflect this change. One of our first stops was @smithislandbeans, an amazing artisan coffee roaster run by one of the nicest and most engaging people I've photographed. A New Yorker so dedicated to the perfect cup of coffee he decided he had to roast his own, Aram fell in love with the island after a visit and left his law degree behind to move out here and open a bird sanctuary. These shots were lit with my @profotousa B1 and A1 strobes, and were swapped out with my @hivelighting lights for the video - I love that they have the same size so I can maintain consistency with the same modeifiers. We had a light outside the window, one inside in a softbox with a grid, and one bounced for fill. Cress: "Api. Have you installed games on my work computer?" Api: "Well. Yes. But I saw you had solitaire so I figured ONE more game wouldn't hurt." Cress: "Ugh."

The story behind this scene is that Lotl wanted to play an MMO with Api, but Lotl only have one computer so Api went to HiveLight to borrow a computer. Unlike Lotl, I don't imagine Api being much of a gamer, so he's very confused haha. An MMORPG is not the best game to start with.

And this was supposed to be a transition to the next scene at HiveLight labs, but then I just fuckin' died. Bummer!

But I shall continue one day! My plan is to build HiveLight in the Sims 4 so I can just screenshot and trace the backgrounds. Work smarter, not harder. Because otherwise you get art burnout for several years and get nothing done instead.

Ravi is one of the crew members at HiveLight labs and is an expert at solid light technologies, and he's also a great graffiti artist!

Another fun fact is that he used to be a human character, but after I started to work on the Toonocosm I threw away a bunch of old ideas. But I missed Ravi, so I redesigned him, brought him back and gave him a new role.

What OS does Api run on?

Probably something original that HiveLight programmed... The HiveLightOS, or something? I'll call it that unless I think of something better... HiveOS, CombOS, NestOS, WebOS, anthillOS, LightOS, HexaHiveOS, BikupaOS. I kinda like HiveOS actually, or just Hive.

I'm no computer expert, but wouldn't he be more vulnerable to trojans, malware and hackers if he used a popular OS that's used by the public?
