Evolving Equine Healthcare Practices - From Stable to Clinic
The global equine healthcare market size is anticipated to reach USD 4.37 billion by 2030. Increasing product R&D, demand for equine diagnostics, investments by key industry stakeholders, and the rising prevalence of diseases in horses are some of the major factors contributing to the market growth. For instance, in September 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture invested around USD 3.0 billion in the animal nutrition and health sector.

The Covid-19 pandemic had a notable impact, particularly on the horse racing/ sports sector. It led to reduced access to equine care services and the cancelation of equine shows. Teaching, training, competitions, events, tourism-related activities, and recreational activities were all discontinued as a result of COVID-19. Horse racing was adversely impacted across the world, along with the demand for horse boarding. Only Sweden continued to hold races within the EU. According to a survey conducted by Hippolia, French Equine Industry Cluster, 68.8% of respondents believed the recovery of the shortfall is impossible, and all equine competitions have been discontinued. A total of USD 385.89 million in sport horse losses were incurred as per estimates. However, the market recovered in 2021 owing to easing lockdown measures and improved access to equine healthcare.
Growing technological advancement, R&D, and initiatives by market players in equine diagnostics are key factors driving the market. For instance, according to a July 2022 article published by the American Veterinary Medical Association, a study was carried out to assess the diagnostic performance of a unique helical fan beam-based CT utilized for imaging horses with clinical head and neck complications. A total of over 120 horses were involved, and the medical records of those who had undergone head or neck CT scans at two university hospitals were examined. Age, sex, breed, the primary complaint, the amount of sedation utilized, the length of the operation, the use of any further diagnostic imaging techniques, the imaging diagnosis, the clinical diagnosis, and any imaging-related problems were all noted. The CT system proved to have short scanning times and reliable utility for regular imaging of horses' teeth and sinuses.
Furthermore, the rising prevalence of diseases in horses is another factor propelling the market growth. West Nile Virus, for instance, was positively identified in a 10-year-old unvaccinated Quarter Horse stallion in Nevada County who was exhibiting transient fever and neurological symptoms by the California Department of Food and Agriculture in September 2022. This was the 8th confirmed case of the equine WNV in California in 2022. Other positive cases were identified in six counties: three in Kern, one in Nevada, one in Sacramento, one in San Luis Obispo, one in Tehama, and three in Tulare. This is expected to promote awareness regarding equine diseases while fueling demand for timely vaccination of horses.

Tw for weight loss mention
The whole exercise will cure your disability thing is a fucking joke. Yes exercise is beneficial for your health, but only if you aren't already on shaky foundations. You need to be on a treatment plan that WORKS before going into the maintenance phase. You wouldn't do regular maintenance on a broken item, you'd work on getting it up and running first. And maybe it would even need specialized maintenance afterwards if it's especially fragile.
I have fibromyalgia and acute degenerative disc disease. My immune system attacks my nerves and discs in my spine are slowly calcifying and causing the bones to constrict and damage my nerves (i think thats how it works). I have days where it feels like my body is on fire from nerve pain and days where it feels like my spine is about to rip from my back. And days where I have both (like today!). I get numbness in my hands and feet. I have horrible migraines. I can no longer walk unaided more than maybe 5 minutes without severe pain. I have something wrong with my knees and hips but the doctors don't know what yet.
You'd think I live an obviously seditary lifestyle correct?
Hell no.
I walk aided on average 6 miles a day over difficult terrain OUTSIDE of regular activity almost everyday. My legs are muscular and strong. I get my heart rate up and a good sweat, like all the gym rats swear on. I am often doing physical labor such as weeding, digging, sample collecting, pruning trees etc.
I'm not saying this to make other disabled people feel bad or prove that they can do anything if they just tried harder. This is an extremely painful lifestyle I've chosen that takes a lot of lifestyle management AND BOUNDARIES to keep up with the work. I also have an extremely forgiving boss who is also physically disabled and knows what I'm going through (deciding between your passion and your health and having to do so each and every day) No one should ever be expected to do what I do. I'm not even sure if I should be doing this myself.
This is to prove that exercise? Has not cured me. My muscles are strong but still hurt as if they're broken and I have to take more breaks than my coworker. I am constantly getting out of breath and I flare up regularly if I'm not careful. I am in excellent physical condition outside of my disabilities. I go to different doctors several times a month to get checked out.
I previously went through a diet program and lost a lot of weight (basically starving myself and got off my depression meds which cause weight gain but are also the only ones that work) and guess what? That didn't do shit either!!! I still felt horrible!!! I've since gained back the weight anyway after switching to focusing on adding more nutrient dense foods than taking stuff away from my diet (also muscle weighs more than fat, and fat helps cushion my aching joints and spine).
The muscle doesn't do shit for my disabilities outside of maybe some stability. Exercising everyday doesn't make the pain go away. Without my medications and aids and nutrition plans and steroid injections and spinal adjustments and physical therapy (that takes my fibro and spine into account) and alternative work methods I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO WHAT I DO. Exercise alone is like trying to make a car run with no oil. Yes it'll go but it'll get more and more damaged till it can't and will need its entire engine replaced!
And yet I see new doctors and they look at me and the first thing out of their mouths is do I exercise? I should try doing a little every day :) and then i fucking blow their minds when I tell them about my job. No longer can they use that fucking cop out on me. I've been through this rodeo. Ive tried their suggestions. If you are in pain and nothing is helping? Exercise ain't going to do SHIT. You need to get to a point where you can move without severe pain first (if that's even possible). Then and only then should you consider implementing regular exercise if you can. Also weight loss talk is a red flag and a cop out. They made me lose 50+ lbs before they would look into the reasons behind my pain. Weight loss did nothing for me and exacerbated my pain.
I am living proof that all that shit is a lie and a cop out. That is the point of this post. I cannot believe people with serious medical conditions are being forced to put their bodies through extreme duress just to be believed. You are not disabled because of laziness or because you sit a lot. Plenty of people live seditary lifestyles and do not live in constant excruciating pain (they may develop disabilities later in life due to this however, and should be doing preventative exercises to maintain their health)
Please, share my story with doctors. Use me as an example. I am proof that "exercise first treat later" does not work. I should not have had to wait years to have my pain validated. I'd rather hundreds of fakers get (what? A blood test? An MRI?) than one chronically ill person get told to try yoga and go away by a doctor.

The whole thing is horrifying and infuriating, especially how his MOTHER is the one who feels guilty. Hello??? Maybe feel guilty that you didn't abort that thang (illegal, but so's a lot of stuff) but he chose to strangle and/or stab his girlfriend to death (AND to kidnap and abuse a 13 year old over a debt of less than $20!) Why isn't his father the one apologizing for raising a menace to society?

TES Rescue & Rehabilitation Program
True North Equestrian
Week 1 (Pt. 1) - Miracle of Miracles
When Pidge signed up to be a part of the Rescue & Rehabilitation program, she'd been prepared for a lot of things.  Given this was her first rescue, she'd spent weeks researching and reaching out to others within the community for advice. She knew that this wouldn't be as heartwarming as the Buzzfeed videos liked to pretend - they could see anything from severe neglect to fear-based aggression, and recovery would take weeks if not months. She knew this. She'd committed to it. She'd stepped out to run a few errands, and figured she'd have time to get back to True North before the 'delivery'. When Oskar's name popped up on her phone, she just assumed the drivers just got there early and that her stable manager would get their new arrival settled. What Oskar said, though, made her heart stop. "Sweetheart, I need you to meet me at the vet right now. She's here, and- honey, it's not good." Pidge dropped her shopping and bolted.
Week 1 submission for the Rescue & Rehabilitation Program event at @theequestriansims <3
The drive to the vet took an eternity and yet, in the blink of an eye, she was there. Oskar's truck was already parked there, as was the delivery trailer. What was going on?
She burst into the stable block and found Oskar waiting for her. Behind him, the vet and a group of techs swarmed one of the open stalls. At first, Pidge thought it was empty - and then she spotted the mud-caked legs of the saddest creature she'd ever laid eyes on.
Tumblr media
"Pidge- Pidge, hon, look at me," Oskar said, and she tore her eyes away to look up at him. "She collapsed on the way in. The vet thinks she's got a raging infection of some kind. They're gonna try and get her up again, but- she's in really rough shape. She… We might need to prepare for the worst." Pidge hadn't even met her, but her heart was already breaking for the mare currently in that stall. Bless Oskar for trying to soften the blow, but it did nothing to alleviate the grief and fear gripping her throat in a vice.
Tumblr media
She kept back, waiting anxiously as the vet and his team did his work. Finally, things began to settle down, and Doc turned towards her. He was an old man, wrinkles lining his face, but his mind was sharp and he was dedicated to his craft, and she knew he was doing all he could.
"We've got her stable, Pidge," Doc told her, "From what I can tell, she's got a massive infection. I've got her on antibiotics and painkillers, which should start kicking in pretty quick. She's got a hell of a gash on her knee, and her feet- in all my years, I haven't seen feet as bad as that." She'd known Doc all her life, and she'd never seen him look so grave. "Can't tell much more 'till the bloodwork comes back, but- this is gonna be touch and go." One gnarled hand settled on her shoulder. "Kid, I'm not gonna lie to you. It'll be a miracle if she lasts the night. We're gonna do our best, but- Well. It's up to her, now." "I'll stay the night," Pidge said, feeling numb. Her eyes drifted back to the mud-caked legs of her newest charge. "If… If she does go, I don't want her to be alone. I'll keep out of the way, I promise." "Okay," Doc said, nodding. There was no point in arguing with her. He moved off to talk to Oskar, probably about the logistics of everything. That was probably for the best - he was the one in charge of financials, anyways. Finally, finally, she got her first good look at the rescue. The poor thing was laid out on her side, legs akimbo. Her chest rose and fell, labored but steady. Her hooves were so overgrown that they'd started to bend backwards. She was covered in so much dirt that Pidge couldn't even tell what color she was. "Oh, baby," Pidge sighed. She edged around the stall, moving slowly, carefully, until she could sit by the poor mare's head. The mare didn't so much as twitch, as if she didn't even know Pidge was there. With a trembling hand, Pidge began to gently stroke her face.
She didn't know quite what possessed her to start singing. Maybe it was her aching heart, longing to give comfort to a creature the world had failed. Maybe it was because it was because the mare was just so quiet, so lifeless. Or maybe it was because she was already hopelessly attached, despite the situation being so dire. The poor horse in front of her deserved kindness… even if it was the final kindness of a gentle lullaby. Everything was up to her now.
"Little bird, little Chavaleh, I don't understand what's happening today… Everything is all a blur…"
Tumblr media
--- Doc was right about the long night. She wasn't quite sure when she dozed off, but the soft whuff of air across her face made her jerk awake with a half-aborted snore. Blearily, she looked up at the dark shape looming over her… and gasped "Oh my God-…!" The mare was on her feet. The mare had made it through the night. Not only that, the mare was looking at Pidge with cautious curiosity, as if she wasn't quite sure where this disheveled human had even come from.  Pidge scrambled to her knees and cautiously extended her hands. After one breathless moment, the mare leaned forward to press her nose into Pidge's palms. "I knew you could do it," She whispered to the mare, gazing into the rich brown eyes of the animal before her. "Little bird… Little Chavaleh…"

Some times you just. I don't know. Things go much better than you could have imagined at the start. This is a Dutch Harness horse, rescued after being sold at auction by the Amish. Pulled shoes in March, and have been doing some pretty intensive rehabilitation work since! He's sound, his feet are so much healthier, and outlook is positive! Amazing what you can do in 3 months!

Part One; The Heart and Hardship of Animal Rescue: A Journey of Compassion and Survival
I often find people amazed by my extensive experience with animal rescue and street vet work, particularly when I share some of the most challenging and occasionally amusing stories. My journey into animal rescue began when I was just a toddler, following in my mother’s footsteps. She had been rescuing animals since she was a young adult, passing her compassion for animals onto me. Our…
