How to Buy Website Hosting: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
If you’re planning to launch a website, choosing the right web hosting is one of the first and most critical steps. The process can be daunting, especially if you're new to the tech world. But don’t worry! In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to buy website hosting, so you can make an informed decision and get your site live in no time.
What Is Website Hosting?
Before diving into the "how," let’s first address the "what." Website hosting is a service that allows your website to be accessible on the internet. It’s essentially the space where your website’s files, content, and data live. When someone visits your site, their browser communicates with the web host, which then delivers the files to their screen.
Different Types of Website Hosting
When you’re learning how to buy website hosting, it’s important to understand that there are several types of hosting available. Your choice will depend on the needs of your website.
Shared Hosting: This is the most common and budget-friendly option. Multiple websites share the same server, making it ideal for small businesses or blogs. However, it may have slower load times if the server gets too crowded.
VPS Hosting (Virtual Private Server): This type of hosting offers a more private server space, even though you’re still technically sharing the physical server. It’s a great middle ground between shared hosting and more expensive dedicated options.
Dedicated Hosting: If you have a large website with high traffic, dedicated hosting is your best bet. It’s pricier, but you get an entire server to yourself, giving you more control, speed, and security.
Cloud Hosting: This is a newer type of hosting where your website is hosted on a network of servers, ensuring that you’re not reliant on just one. It offers scalability, as you can easily add more resources as your site grows.
Key Factors to Consider When Buying Website Hosting
Now that you know the types of hosting, let’s move on to the factors you should consider when learning how to buy website hosting. Each of these aspects will play a role in determining whether a hosting plan is right for you.
Pricing: Hosting plans can range from a few dollars a month to hundreds. However, more expensive doesn’t always mean better. Make sure to choose a plan that fits your budget but still meets your site’s requirements. Always check for renewal rates, as they can sometimes be higher than the initial cost.
Bandwidth and Storage: These are key considerations. If your site is heavy on media or expects high traffic, you’ll need a plan with more bandwidth and storage. Many basic hosting plans offer unlimited bandwidth, but always read the fine print.
Uptime Guarantee: A host’s uptime guarantee ensures that your site remains live and accessible most of the time. Look for a host with at least a 99.9% uptime guarantee, as downtime can mean lost visitors and revenue.
Customer Support: Reliable customer support is essential, especially if you’re new to hosting. You’ll want 24/7 support, with options for live chat, email, or phone assistance. Some hosts even provide dedicated technical help.
Security Features: Your website’s security is paramount. When buying website hosting, make sure the provider offers robust security features such as SSL certificates, daily backups, and protection from malware and DDoS attacks.
Scalability: If you’re just starting, you might not need a lot of resources. But as your website grows, it’s important to choose a hosting provider that allows you to upgrade easily without much hassle.
Step-by-Step Guide on How to Buy Website Hosting
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s go through a step-by-step process of how to buy website hosting.
Identify Your Hosting Needs: Determine what type of website you’re building. Is it a simple blog, an e-commerce site, or a large corporate website? This will help you decide on the type of hosting you need.
Research Hosting Providers: Compare various hosting providers. Some popular options include Bluehost, HostGator, SiteGround, and GoDaddy. Look at their pricing, features, and customer reviews to get a feel for their reliability.
Choose a Plan: Once you’ve narrowed down your provider, select the plan that best suits your needs. Shared hosting is usually fine for small to medium-sized websites, while VPS or dedicated hosting may be needed for larger sites.
Register a Domain (If Needed): Many hosting companies offer a free domain registration for the first year. If you haven’t already purchased a domain, this can be a great way to save money.
Complete the Purchase: After selecting your plan and domain, proceed to checkout. Some hosting providers offer add-ons, like extra security or email services. Decide if you need these before finalizing your purchase.
Set Up Your Hosting: Once you’ve bought your hosting, you’ll receive an email with login details to your hosting dashboard. From here, you can install WordPress or other content management systems (CMS), upload files, and start building your site.
Launch Your Website: After setting everything up, all that’s left is to make your site live! Most hosting providers make this easy by offering one-click installs for WordPress and other popular platforms.

the tl;dr
IRON CROWN as a free comic is now off of wordpress and can be viewed by a neat, robust HTML/CSS/JS comic template called rarebit! effectively nothing has changed for the reader, beyond expecting a little more reliability of uptime over the years.
all comic pages and previously paywalled patreon posts can also be downloaded in this art dump for free, as mentioned in the new author's notes.
the long story:
When talking shop about site/platform moves under this handle, I think it's useful to realize that us (taboo) kink artists live in an actively adversarial internet now, compared to five years ago.
meaning that we have to live with an expectation that 99% of platforms (including registrars and hosting, let alone sns sites) will ban/kick us without warning. this might explain the overly cautious/defensive way we discuss technologies - weighing how likely (and easily) the tool can be used against us vs the perks.
for example: has a harassment mob bullied the platform owners into quietly dropping lolisho artists? trans artists? does the platform/technology have a clear, no-bullshit policy on drawn kink art (specifically third rail kinks like noncon)? does the platform have a long history of hosting r18 doujin artists/hentai publishers with no issue? does the company operate in a nation unfriendly to specific kinks (eg fashkink artists fundamentally incompatible with companies based in germany, when other kinks might be OK?). i talk with a few different groups of artists daily about the above.
but that gets tiring after a while! frankly, the only path that's becoming optimal long-term is (a) putting kink art on your personal site, and if possible, (b) self hosting the whole thing entirely, while (c) complementing your site with physical merch since it's much harder to destroy in one go.
with that said - I've been slowly re-designing all of my pages/sub-domains as compact 'bug out bags'. lean, efficiently packed with the essentials, and very easy to save and re-upload to a new host/registrar near instantly (and eventually, be friendly to self-hosting bandwidth costs since that's now a distant goal).
how does this look in theory, you ask?
zero dependencies. the whole IRON CROWN comic subdomain is three JS files, a few HTML files, one CSS file, and images. that's it.
no updates that can be trojan horse'd. I'm not even talking about malware though that's included; I'm talking about wordpress (owned by the same owners as tumblr cough) slipping in AI opt-outs in a plug-in that's turned on by default. I used to think wordpress was safe from these shenanigans because wordpress-as-a-CMS could be separate from wordpress-as-a-domain; I was wrong. they'll get you through updates.
robust reliability through the KISS principle. keep it simple stupid. malware/DDOS'ing has an infinitively harder time affecting something that doesn't have a login page/interactive forms. You can't be affected by an open source platform suddenly folding, because your "starter" template is contained files saved on your desktop (and hopefully multiple backups...). etc.
so how does this look in practice?
To be fair, you're often trading convenient new shiny UI/tools for a clunkier back-end experience. but i think it's a mistake to think your art site has to look like a MIT professor's page from 1999.
with IRON CROWN, I've effectively replicated it from a (quite good) comic template in wordpress to 98% of the same layout in pure HTML/CSS/JS via rarebit. Should rarebit's website go "poof", I've got the initial zip download of the template to re-use for other sites.
I frankly have a hard time recommending rarebit for an actively updating webcomic since you personally might be trading too many advantages like SEO tools, RSS feeds, etc away - but for a finished webcomic that you want to put in "cold storage" - it's amazing. and exactly what I needed here.

The more persistent control you have over a device, the more you and the device adapt to each other, becoming a more effective group organism. The higher the input and output bandwidth of the interface (i.e., the greater the number of distinct ways you can interact with it / it can respond to you), the faster the system can adapt.
So, the horse metaphor makes perfect sense: your desktop ships with a real keyboard on which you can probably do 300 WPM without blocking part of the display, and has a display that can hold half a dozen legible non-overlapping windows. If you have a screwdriver, you can open it up and replace basically any part. Even without a screwdriver, you can generally out of the box persistently dramatically change the UI settings to fit the needs of your environment (light vs dark mode, font size and style). You can stick linux on & that opens up a lot more. On a desktop computer, it's possible for a motivated 10 year old of average intelligence to progress from normal computer use to writing non-trivial application software for their own use within a couple years -- I am proof, & I'm far from alone.
Tablets are on the opposite end of the spectrum: simplified, locked down. The user does not collaborate with the tablet; instead, the tablet has only those affordances that channel the user's behavior into habits the developers of the tablet software consider desirable.
Mobile & web achieved the dream of proprietary software people: user-facing software that the user can't even disassemble because the important parts aren't accessible; since they did this through physical distance rather than the legal system, they can profit from other people's open source software too, circumventing many of the restrictions intended to keep improvements folded back into the community or to limit commercial use. But the side effect of this is that it gives professional computer touchers much more control over regular people's computers: not only can you not fix bugs in someone else's web app yourself, but you can't refuse to upgrade to a version that's a worse fit for your purposes. Where desktop computing encouraged the development of communities of amateur computer hobbyists who, together, would adapt or create alternatives to things that didn't work right (as well as creating lots of interesting, funny, unnecessary stuff that can only be classified as Art -- little games and toys, elaborate shitposts, weird mods and skins), mobile does not. The only thing you need to make your desktop computer do something brand new is a desktop computer, the software development tools & documentation that ship with the OS, and some free time -- you don't even need an internet connection; developing for web or mobile also functionally requires a desktop, on top of your mobile device for mobile (and if it's an iPhone you gotta have a Mac & pay Apple $99/year), & for web you need to pay for hosting and a domain name.

crossover discussion got me thinking about what arthur and john's domain(s) would look like if they DID end up going that route... would they have two separate ones? or would they share? or would it be like, technically two domains but they overlap in the same physical space, much like the guys themselves. somehow.
and what would like, the Themes of them be. bc as we've said, these two could be Touched by a LOT of the fears, potentially, so which one(s) would end up "claiming" them? does the form of a domain prioritize what the person in control is most afraid of, or is it the fear they most inspire in others, because those questions have two VERY different answers. i could see it using a mimicry of the dark world as a base, maybe, given how that's already an extant landscape that is VERY scary and john specifically is VERY afraid of. but then i doubt it would leave it at just that, either, without some extra flavor thrown in. idk. it's fun to think about tho
Ooh the idea of overlapping domains is so cool, having even their domains as entangled as themselves, while still leaving room for reflections of both separately to shine through... We do also have examples where domains — I think it was that the fire domain with Jude Perry? — had multiple "Avatars" (owners? overseers?) so there's definitely at least some precedent for shared domains, and it is a bit hard to imagine them not sharing anything
I think the domains would be influenced more by which fears they have served / have claimed them, given that Martin's domain was a cross between Eye and Lonely from his ties to the Magnus Institute and Peter Lukas. I don't think there's any domains where the "owner" is primarily afraid of the thing with out that element of serving it, given, that's kinda what sets apart being a victim in a domain vs overseeing your own domain
So then, I guess the question is which fears Arthur and John would be/have been most inclined to serve?
My first thought for Arthur is Hunt, given the hunting Larson down "predators need to be hunted" thing, the fact that he's solidly established to think similarly to the Butcher who is 100% a Hunt avatar, the fact that he keeps making deals with Eldritch monstrosities to hunt for them (get a new host for Scratch, feed people to Horig, etc), and while it definitely leans more blatantly towards the Eye, there is a certain hunterly quality to being an investigator who seeks out missing people and solutions to mysteries/problems and such (Daisy was a detective iirc, and idk, the vibe feels like it's there for Arthur)
By default I feel like John kinda has to be Web and Spiral, just because, y'know, the King in Yellow. Tho I think he personally exhibits a lot more Web behavior that Spiral, a lot more of his lies and secrets and deceit is for manipulation and control than for making anyone question their reality or sanity. The Dark and other Fears feel a lot more one-sided, purely a matter of scaring him, than anything he wields or serves
But then there's the whole matter of the Fear one serves also often being one they themself are vulnerable to, just also one they can wield on top of that. Which I think Martin and Jon Sims demonstrate pretty well, with Martin obviously being haunted by loneliness, and Jon's insecurity/fear of judgement and such. I think that kinda comes out a lot in Martin's domain too, I feel like it's maybe not too unlike a domain he might've been sorted into if he weren't the owner.
So maybe that's something to consider for Arthur and John too? It's not hard at all to see how they would both fear being hunted and controlled after all. Maybe they could even have a shared domain that's just basically their own experiences of constantly running from the endless horrors trying to kill them and being manipulated and lacking agency and so on in it all...
If they were to be put inside domains, not as the overseers but as victims of them, I think John would 100% end up in something like the Dark World. But also the idea of him being placed as the "owner" (or perhaps, The Ruler) of something that mirrors the Dark World... I think that would fuck him up pretty badly too, which would then kind of blur the lines on whether he's actually just another victim of the domain. Maybe a bit like Martin's guilt/shame around his domain, but potentially a fair bit worse 'cus those feelings of shame around hurting people are a pretty big part of John's character arc at all times

A free image hosting solution for AO3 and elsewhere - A Tutorial (mobile-friendly!)
See the demo site made from this template IN ACTION: https://hotlink-archive-template.pages.dev/
This guide is for an easy, mobile-friendly way to host files for hotlinking on AO3 or elsewhere, using github and cloudflare pages.
I've encountered far too many dead links in fanfics and forums simply because a hosting service decided to dump older files, or they decided to change their TOS to no longer allow hotlinking or certain kinds of content (nsfw, fictional graphic content). See Optional Steps for even more options.
This is an easy, barebones way to permanently host images that you don't want deleted unexpectedly or that you can't host elsewhere. (Emphasis on barebones. This will not be a nice portfolio style site. Unless you decide to code that yourself!) You can follow the link above for an example of this type of site.
It is also EASY to upload and use on mobile devices after initial setup!
Tools you will need:
Cloudflare Pages/Workers is a free to use static site hosting service. This will publish your files and make them available online. This will publish your files and make them available online. There is a limit to the amount of data you can upload for free, but you can pay for proper hosting if you want to exceed it.
Github is a code sharing/storage platform. Your files will go here first before being published on Pages. You can edit and upload files through your browser at github.com, or through Github Desktop, a program you install on your computer. There are limits to Github repositories, but they are also generous (suggested 1GB to 5GB per repo).
Basic Setup
1. Create a github account
2. Copy this template repository hotlink-archive-template
Your website will be contained in a repository, a place where all the files and the revision history for your project are stored.
This template repository uses an "Action" (using python) to automatically create a "home" page with an Index of all the files in your repository every time it is updated.
NOTE: I recommend you set your repository to Private. Github's history feature is extensive, so if you have sensitive content or think you might want to delete something later, it will be hard to get rid of it completely once it's been committed and publicly available.
3. Enable Action permissions
In order for the Action script to work, you need to give Actions permission to read and write in your repository.
Within your repository, go to the tab Settings > Actions > General > Workflow Permissions
Tumblr media
4. Create a Cloudflare account
5. Create a Pages (or Workers) project and link it to your Github repository
Your Pages project will create the front end of the site where the images will be displayed. You will be able to link those images to other platforms like AO3.
You can create either a Workers or Pages project by going to Add > Pages (or Workers). Name your project WISELY! This name will be your site's URL.
Workers vs. Pages
Workers is subsuming Pages on Cloudflare and now has all the same static hosting capabilities, in addition to its original server-side processing services. If you'd like to, read more about this.
While Workers has similar capabilities, I recommend Pages for this project. Pages has the added bonus of a cleaner URL if you do not have your own domain: “MySite.pages.dev” in Pages vs Workers' “MySite.username.workers.dev”
You will be prompted to import an existing Git repository. You will need to give it access to your Github to do this.
Tumblr media
Select the repository on your Github you made for your project, then hit "Begin Setup".
Name your project WISELY! This name will be your site's URL.
You do not need to change any settings on the next page, so hit "Save and Deploy". Your image hosting site will now be live!
The URL will be "https://ProjectName.pages.dev". It may take a few minutes to become accessible.
Now you're done with the basic setup!
How to Add files
You can add any files you want to link to on AO3/elsewhere through mobile, desktop browser, or the Github desktop program!
Here is how to do it on Github.com:
Open up the repository that you made (it can be found at github.com/username/repositoryname). You will see a list of folders and files that are in that repository.
Click into the folder "fan-stuff".
In the top right, go Add file > Upload files and drag in the images you want added. You will need to name the images BEFORE you upload them, as there is not an easy renaming feature within Github's browser interface.
In the Commit changes box, choose a title for what action you are doing. This will help you backtrack uploads if needed.
For example, it could be "Uploaded Batman Art". Make sure it's set to "commit directly to the main branch", then commit those changes. This will upload the files.
Now, if you visit your site, you will see your uploaded image under the "fan-stuff" folder!
To embed/link your image, navigate to your file on your Pages site and copy the URL in the address bar. This URL is what you will use to embed your photo (using HTML or "add image as URL" tools some sites have).
Continue onto More Setup to customize your site and implement more advanced settings. See Tips/Troubleshooting if you're running into problems.
More Setup
Perform site customization/advanced setup with Github Desktop on your PC
Github’s web UI is great, but it has major limitations. I highly recommend that you use Github Desktop during the initial setup, as well as when you want to make major organizational changes to your files/site. Once you have everything set, though, you can use Github in your browser to upload whatever files you want to hotlink at the moment.
Download Github Desktop and “clone” (download a copy of) the repository you made.
This is the best time to rename/rearrange folders + files, etc.
There are other methods in the Troubleshooting section if you need, but Github Desktop is by far the easiest way
see Adding/Renaming Folders for important info on how to properly rename/add folders
see About the Index Page for how to customize your Index pages
Once you’re done editing, “push” (upload) all the changes you made to your online Github repository.
Having some sort of text editor like Notepad++ is useful for editing any code, the automatic color-coding is very helpful. You can edit in plain old Notepad as well, it just won’t look as nice.
About the Index Page
The template repository uses a python Action to automatically create an HTML "home" page with an Index of ALL the files in the folder every time it is updated.
This is particularly convenient for mobile use, as you can upload a file, and the python action automatically updates the Index page.
If you don’t want this, just disable the “create-index” Action and delete the .py files. You can just type in the file locations to get to each file, or you can manually maintain an home/Index page yourself, which isn't hard if you know some basic HTML and can remember to do it consistently.
Also note that if you wish to change any of the content on your Index pages, you must edit the "index.py" file, not the "index.html" file. The "index.html" file gets re-written every time the "create-index" Action is run in order to keep the file index up to date.
Adding/Renaming/Deleting Folders
Disclaimer: This is a bit convoluted because I am extremely unqualified to be working with python OR HTML. There’s probably an easy way to do this, but I don’t have the skill to do it, and most of the stuff here is copied from stuff I found around. If you know a better way to do things, please let me know, it’d make my life easier too!
Adding or renaming folders involves some extra steps.
1. The "index.py" file inside the folder needs to be edited to match the parent folder name.
The place you need to do this is found near the top of the file (highlighted below)
Tumblr media
2. Then the outer-most "create-index.py" file needs to be updated to match the new name as well. If you’ve added a new folder, duplicate and adjust the code to match.
The place you need to do this is found at the bottom (highlighted below)
Tumblr media
If you don’t need any folders at all, great! Just delete them and their contents! No need to edit any files. (Don’t delete “index.html” or “create-index.py” or “.github/workflows”!)
If you would like to have these folders for later use, leave them as-is and simply edit the index files.
The relevant lines of code at the bottom of "create-index.py" like in the previous step for renaming folders. You may delete this code, or comment it out (using # at the beginning of a line will make it “invisible” to the computer)
Then, add the folder’s name to the “exclusions” list at the top of the "create-index.py" file so that it doesn’t show up on your Index page (highlighted below)
Tumblr media
You can also use this same concept to create "invisible" files/folders. Any files/folders included in the "exclusions" list in "(create-)index.py" will not be listed on the Index page, however they can still be found through the direct URL to the file.
On the flipside, this means simply hiding the file/folder from the Index page does not get rid of the file from your site. Anyone who has the URL will be able to find that file unless you remove it, or move its location to change the URL
Tips/Troubleshooting
(Re)name your files before uploading
It’s not possible to rename image/media files on Github’s web UI (it is possible with the local Git program). The "create-index" Action lists out the names of your files exactly, so you will end up with ugly strings of numbers and letters on your Index page if you don't rename them, which is terrible to look at and also plain old CONFUSING to navigate.
So if you're uploading on mobile or through Github on browser, name your files with easy to remember and distinctive filenames before you go ahead and upload them. This makes everything much easier, and it makes your Index page look nice :)
My website isn’t updating when I edit my Github repository!
Check to see if your Pages is retrieving from the correct branch, and if it has automatic deployments enabled.
Tumblr media
Can’t see your Github repository when trying to link it on Cloudflare?
Check your Github applications Repository Access settings. Go to your ACCOUNT Settings > Integrations - Applications > Cloudflare > Repository Access
Tumblr media
Index action is failing!
Go back to step 3 in Basic Setup and check if you’ve given Actions permission to read and write. If that’s not the issue, check to see if you’ve set up your "index.py" files correctly. The folder names should correspond to the parent folders, and the "create-index.py" file in the outer-most folder should have the correct folder names at the VERY BOTTOM.
How do I rename a folder (or move a file) in Github’s web UI?
It isn’t possible to directly rename a folder in Github’s web UI, doing it using Git on your computer is the most foolproof way to do it. But there is a way (except for media files).
Go into the folder you want to rename and select a file such as “index.html” and enter the “edit” mode.
Go to the file name and backspace until you can edit the parent folder name as well. This will create a new folder with the new name.
You’ll have to do this to every file in the folder until they’re all in the new folder.
Unfortunately, you can’t do this with media files like png/jpg/etc, because entering the “edit” mode on a photo “breaks” it somehow, and bye-bye image :’) (Don’t worry if this happens, just don’t commit the change or roll it back in your history).
Optional Steps
Make deployment (semi-)Manual
You can play with cloudflare and github to make deployment of your site a manual step you have to trigger, instead of automatic with each commit (default setting). This is a safeguard in case you accidentally make a change or delete something from your github, it won't affect your website.
Deploy w/ Branches
You could do a semi-automatic deployment with a "Production" branch on your github that is separate from the branch you edit. This creates an extra step before anything is published on Cloudflare. A safeguard against accidental changes/deletion of sorts :)
Tumblr media
Go to Settings > Build tab > Branch Control
Choose your Production Branch (MAIN or CLOUDFLARE) and enable (or disable) automatic deployments
If you choose MAIN, every change you commit to MAIN will be published to Pages
If you choose CLOUDFLARE, any changes you make to MAIN will not show up on your Pages site until you Pull from MAIN to CLOUDFLARE
To Pull changes from MAIN to CLOUDFLARE, go to your github repository
Above your files on the Left, you will see a toggle to choose which branch you are on.
Choose Cloudflare. There will be a message like "This branch is 7 commits ahead of, 2 commits behind main." Click "2 commits behind"
Click "Create a Pull Request". Then click "Merge Pull Request". If everything is correct, this should trigger a build on your Cloudflare
Deploy w/ Github Actions
Or you can create a manual command that you have to enter on github to trigger a deployment on cloudflare. If you're paranoid about anything happening to your site due to a mishap on the Github side, this is a safe choice. Unless you manually trigger the command, your Pages site will be completely untouched no matter if something happens to your repo.
This can be done in many ways, I think the most straightforward is with Deploy Hooks (maybe in conjunction with Actions if you want to make it mobile-friendly), and might be a bit complicated, but not too hard to figure out with some Google-fu.
Here’s some links I think will be useful (note: I don’t use this method, so these haven’t been tested)
Manual trigger action tutorial
How to configure Github webooks
Storing Locally instead of on Github
Although this guide is written with Cloudflare's Github integration in mind, particularly for easy online/mobile access, you can also keep your files locally on your PC and directly upload your assets onto your Pages project. This gives you full control over what happens to your files. (Keeping backups is a good idea. You can still use Github Desktop to do this, just keep your repository on your PC.)
Simply clone/download the repository as it is, customize it as you like, and create a NEW Pages project on Cloudflare, using "Direct Upload" to upload your files
Once you have connected a Pages project with Github, there is no way to change the deployment method to Direct Upload or vice versa. Direct Upload is also not available for Workers.
One thing that will NOT work the same is the "create-index" Action that only works on Github.
I have made a "create-index.exe" that will execute the "create-index.py" files in the exact same way as they would work with the Action. You do not have to install python for this to work (if I did everything right). Simply run "create-index.exe" whenever you make a change and want to update the "index.html" files
Remember, this is EXACTLY THE SAME as the "create-index" Action, meaning you have to edit each "index.py" file when you rename folders, add a folder, want to exclude a file from the Index page, etc. (See Adding/Renaming Folders for how to do this)
Find me on Bluesky. Or if you have a problem, open an Issue on this project :)
I'll try to answer your questions as best I can! But really, I am the most amateur of amateurs and figured this all out using Google, so I might not be of much help ^^;
I also recommend Squidge Images (an offshoot of Squidge.org) as a fairly trustworthy alternative. However, Squidge Images does have some additional rules that Squidge does not, and what crosses the line is at their discretion.
I also posted this over on AO3!

AU Sonic Smackdown - Round 1, Right Side
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Click to see full size image
Reflection of You AU belongs to @jeysecretive
Mecha Troubles AU belongs to @wolfinitethewolf
Read more about them under the cut!
Reflection of You AU-
While doing an archaeological dig, Sonic found an old artifact that gave him a curse.
It was very strong, tormenting the hedgehog day by day, and no one knew how to help him.
…By coincidence, Sonic was taken to Mephiles, who lived on the edge of an unknown interdimensional wasteland. Demon said that the only way to break the curse was to kill everyone Sonic cared about. Guy was against it.
But still, pain tormented him and tore him apart from the inside out. Nothing worked for the hedgehog, so he made the decision to kill Eggman. And so he did.
But the act did not free the hedgehog from the Curse, which was making him worse and worse, making him beastly with pain.
The hedgehog decided to make a second visit to Mephiles.
But when he's arrived at the demon's domain, the demon was hosting an unusual guest. Sonic remembered the treacherous things that Mephiles did, and decided to overhear his conversation.
The demon was talking to a powerful dark demigod who had been Mephiles' buddy for years.
It turned out that Mephiles had purposely enchanted the artifact so that Sonic would obey him, getting into the taste and becoming a bloodthirsty monster.
As soon as the hedgehog heard this, he destroyed the demon on the spot in a rage.
But the Curse went nowhere. And Sonic was desperate!
It was a good thing he had met Shadow.
The black hedgehog began traveling the world with him to find a way to crack Sonic's curse, and soon they learned that the Seven Emeralds of Chaos and the Master Emerald would help him heal. But it's worth the rush! Sonic's time is running out, and the emeralds are hidden all over the planet.
The end of the story is still open, and the hedgehogs are searching for their emeralds. Hopefully, they will make it.
Mecha Troubles AU-
AU where in Scrapnik Island Mecha Sonic had successfully swapped minds with Sonic.
Mecha Sonic is able to do everything Sonic could (spindash, harness the Chaos Emeralds powers, etc). However, being a robot, is really great with tech, able to hack into anything, or reprogram anything. He is also able to send signals to things (since he IS still technically a robot).
He is not cocky or snarky like Sonic was, he usually never speaks unless he really needs too. He will plan ahead of things, being a thinker and not leaping into things first.
Unlike Sonic, who fights as if its a game and will go easy on them, Mecha does not, fighting fast, swiftly, and without stopping for anything else, viciously attacking if needed. Before making physical contact with anyone in a fight, he will instead use his speed to his advantage to sneak up upon an enemy, bouncing back and forth until successful. Usually shows no emotions.
His main goal is to end Dr. Eggman, and will eliminate anyone that gets in his way.

Maybe this is what you were getting at but I think its Sukuna killing himself rather than having to be locked in Yuji for one more day. So I guess Yuji demoralized himself into auto destruct (maybe the only way to destroy the fingers?) Which is interesting. It’s just the whole process of all the other fingers getting weakened or destroyed is so muddy and unclear like much of the rest of the fight.
/same anon/ so many “facts” in this fight felt like they were conveyed in the most unclear, subjective way possible. Did Gojo need to fight alone?? Yuta says he did, but it doesn’t really “feel” like it. Did Yutajo need to happen? He saved Yuji from MS, but it doesn’t “feel” like it was necessary. Yuji’s soul punches were crucial, but I feel like the boundary between Megumi and Sukuna’s soul should have been portrayed on the page to make it clearer how devastating they were.
Honestly, I have no clear idea what Gege was trying to convey there at the end. Self-destruct is a possibility, but if so, it's out of the blue. Like you said, the mechanism of death is unclear. Plus, what happened ultimately contradicts what's been set up until that point. Yuuji offered Sukuna the choice to live in him or die—but it also looks like he could have consumed that lump of Sukuna and hosted him whether or not Sukuna consented. Sukuna definitely chose death at that juncture, but was it an active choice or a passive result of being ripped like that from Megumi? Canon sure doesn't tell us! Maybe it will in the following chapters—wouldn't be the first time. But that's exhausting in its own way.
And yes, I agree so fucking much. The structure of this fight was horrendous. I enjoy drawn-out shonen fights with all the typical tropes involved (e.g., I ate up the tournament arc in Yu Yu Hakusho), but the Sukuna gauntlet just felt messy from the beginning to the end. There were good moments, and it'll look great animated, but taken as a whole, it's underwhelming as hell.
Gojou did not need to fight alone; I'll die on this hill. Everything after his death makes it so damn clear he did not need to fight alone. Yeah, he couldn't have fought at full strength, but with the sheer firepower and tricky CTs on their team, you didn't need Gojou's full strength against Sukuna; you just needed a good strategy. Combine Higuruma's domain with Gojou in the field, for instance. But Sukuna vs. Gojou was more of an ego match than a strategic one, and that does suit Gojou's character, but it also leaves him dead without much character development or thematic impact.
Yuutajou accomplished nothing that couldn't have been tackled in some other way, and like Higuruma's domain or Kashimo's...everything, it was a lot of set-up and hype for extremely low pay-off. Even Yuuji's assault on Sukuna suffered from half a dozen interruptions that ruined the flow of the fight and also their interactions.
I want to bang my head against a wall. Feel free to join me!

Dell AI PCs: A Gateway To AI For Life Sciences Organizations
Tumblr media
AI in the Life Sciences: A Useful Method Using Computers.
For life sciences companies wishing to experiment with AI before making a full commitment, Dell AI PCs are perfect. The Dell AI PCs are revolutionary way to get started in the vast field of artificial intelligence, particularly for clients in the life sciences who are searching for a cost-effective way to create intricate processes.
The Dell AI PCs, GPU-enhanced servers, and cutting-edge storage solutions are essential to the AI revolution. If you approach the process strategically, it may be surprisingly easy to begin your AI journey.
Navigating the Unmarked Path of AI Transformation
The lack of a clear path is both an exciting and difficult part of the AI transition in the medical sciences. As it learn more about the actual effects of generative and extractive AI models on crucial domains like drug development, clinical trials, and industrial processes, the discipline continues to realize its enormous promise.
It is evident from discussions with both up-and-coming entrepreneurs and seasoned industry titans in the global life sciences sector that there are a variety of approaches to launching novel treatments, each with a distinct implementation strategy.
A well-thought-out AI strategy may help any firm, especially if it prioritizes improving operational efficiency, addressing regulatory expectations from organizations like the FDA and EMA, and speeding up discovery.
Cataloguing possible use cases and setting clear priorities are usually the initial steps. But according to a client, after just two months of appointing a new head of AI, they were confronted with more than 200 “prioritized” use cases.
When the CFO always inquires about the return on investment (ROI) for each one, this poses a serious problem. The answer must show observable increases in operational effectiveness, distinct income streams, or improved compliance clarity. A pragmatic strategy to evaluating AI models and confirming their worth is necessary for large-scale AI deployment in order to guarantee that the investment produces quantifiable returns.
The Dell AI PC: Your Strategic Advantage
Presenting the Dell AI PCs, the perfect option for businesses wishing to experiment with AI before committing to hundreds of use cases. AI PCs and robust open-source software allow resources in any department to investigate and improve use cases without incurring large costs.
Each possible AI project is made clearer by beginning with a limited number of Dell AI PCs and allocating skilled resources to these endeavors. Trials on smaller datasets provide a low-risk introduction to the field of artificial intelligence and aid in the prediction of possible results. This method guarantees that investments are focused on the most promising paths while also offering insightful information about what works.
Building a Sustainable AI Framework
Internally classifying and prioritizing use cases is essential when starting this AI journey. Pay close attention to data kinds, availability, preferences for production vs consumption, and choices for the sale or retention of results. Although the process may be started by IT departments, using IT-savvy individuals from other departments to develop AI models may be very helpful since they have personal experience with the difficulties and data complexities involved.
As a team, it is possible to rapidly discover areas worth more effort by regularly assessing and prioritizing use case development, turning conjecture into assurance. The team can now confidently deliver data-driven findings that demonstrate the observable advantages of your AI activities when the CFO asks about ROI.
The Rational Path to AI Investment
Investing in AI is essential, but these choices should be based on location, cost, and the final outcomes of your research. Organizations may make logical decisions about data center or hyperscaler hosting, resource allocation, and data ownership by using AI PCs for early development.
This goes beyond only being a theoretical framework. This strategy works, as shown by Northwestern Medicine’s organic success story. It have effectively used AI technology to improve patient care and expedite intricate operations, illustrating the practical advantages of using AI strategically.

Fey and Archfey Familia
With two adorable little nephews running around, I've been on the search for something they can call me that isn't aunt, uncle, or kinnie (which I swear to god is legitimately the Best option I've found so far, yes they are actually that bad). I've sort of slipped into the role (partially by accident, partially very on purpose) of being construed as a changeling fey creature amongst the branches of the family tree.
Well, I've fleshed that idea out a little more and I'm giving it freely to any nonbeenies with little relatives to use.
Why?
Nonbinary people aren't a new thing by any means but cultural acceptance of us is still quite unsteady, and one of the most common questions (and thinly-veiled accusations) is "what are we going to tell our children?"
In answer to that, this approach uses a sense of whimsy and fantasy to help children understand that people who are different are perfectly fine and welcome and even healthy to have around in their family gatherings. In a nutshell, we're the weird ones in the family, and that's not only okay it can be really hecking cool.
It's not inspired by any one tale of fairies or pixies or whatnot from any one culture, and in places intentionally borrows from several to further the theme of friendly cooperative integration where appropriate.
What?
Fey and Archfey Familia (and other spellings & capitalisations of the same, I personally enjoy "fae" but use "fey" here for ease of child reading comprehension) are the visible emergence of ancient supernatural phenomena in a human bloodline. For some of them it's the result of long-forgotten pacts and contracts, for others its the result of distant intermingling, for others its just a spontaneous jerk reaction of nature re-asserting itself against the overwhelming human presence (a signal perhaps to say "don't forget, we're not leaving").
This phenomena manifests with individuals who, though seemingly human at first blanche, go against the grain of conventional human society in odd ways. Sometimes these are small clues you could blink and overlook for years at a time, and sometimes they're more overt, like a blatant eschewing or uncommon mixture of physical characteristics.
Most are joyful, even revelling in this differences that mark them out from the rest of their erstwhile family, though many similarly face difficulties with mental health and medical support. Cultures rarely thrive amidst colonists, and fey-kind likewise struggle to exist living amongst the civilisation of poor neighbours.
Importantly, though different, these fey are relatives within the bloodline. They are no less related to their kin than a relative who skipped the big ears gene or who goes to a different church. Some may describe themselves as changelings, implying they aren't truly related, but the actual practise of replacing children with fairies is a relic of myth.
Fey vs Archfey
Individuals are distinguished as either Fey Familia or Archfey Familia. There's not any concrete rulings on who gets to be what, but the Archfey Familia are usually the "elder" fey in one way or another, often those whose nature became more apparent further back than their peers.
It's important to note that whilst "archfey" has traditionally referred to an individual atop the court hierarchy, Archfey Familia are only such within their own clan (that is, every family may have one but they're not lord above all amongst their kind globally, which is reserved for the rarely-seen Archfey in Ordinary).
Every family can have multiple fey and archfey across multiple domains, without restriction. It can however be said that families more welcoming to good neighbour relatives tend to host more good neighbours amongst their ranks.
Domains and courts
Family fey are usually (though not always, more Fey Familia in particular tend to be non-court than Archfey Familia) attached to a particular domain or court of wisdom. This may be stories, or space, or the animal kingdom, etc. Different individuals in the same family are under no obligation to spring from the same source, nor adhere to the same presentations or courts.
This typically confers a degree of responsibility on the fey to educate and encourage curiosity in a given subject of study, but some are occasionally a little too caught up in their fixations to actually spend time teaching them. Though historical prejudice has cast the fey as trickster and even malevolent spirits, they were usually educators and helpers, though occasional misunderstandings did happen.
Essentially it's a signal to tell younger relatives "hey, here's someone you can talk to about X", providing a clear social function with which children can engage. Functionally, it serves to cite the relative as demonstration that it's okay to celebrate and enjoy things, and to show and exalt that enjoyment even into adulthood. It can also imply a sense of unity, by identifying a common pursuit amongst a group of relatives.

Deadlands Finale Meta
putting this under a cut because of spoilers for the whole finale episode, but also because i chronically ramble. my Thoughts about the parallels andy made in this episode, the choices certain players made, and the parts that didn't quite add up properly to me
let's start with one of the fun bits: why didn't any of the rings break when their original wielders were killed? especially the ones where the people who would eventually do the tests (say, nate for death) were there? what changed compared to the first time?
it could just be the deadlands, or having all the rings together in victoria's collection, but i think it's the way each horseman was killed. by design of andy as the marshall, each horseman was killed by their own weapon (metaphorically speaking, mostly)
what do i mean by this? well.
War/Benjamin Bellows
bellows' main obsession as a war avatar is with duelling and slaughtering his enemies. who shoot him in the end? nate, the man he killed in a duel, and delacey, the person who duelled through a tournament to get to him. this is also the most obvious point of andy forcing their hand into playing on the horseman's terms - he set it up so they had to compete in the tournament to kill him
Pestilence/Daisy DuCrow
her pestilence domain is shown in a couple ways, but the most important for us are the hole in her skull and her disease transfer machine. the hole, though it lets her poison bobby, also lets silas shoot her. and the machine is used on her client, but also on daisy herself after she dies in order to revive bobby. her death might be by a bullet, but the situation around it is very ironic in nature
Death/M. T. Boudreaux
the most obvious on our list! as a hangin' judge, he hosts show trials and unfairly sentences people to hang. he's also undead. after a show trial where the gang turns the crowd against him, he fails to kill a harrowed and is hung by the posse. hangin' judges literally have to be killed ironically in order to die
Famine/H. Unger
unger's hunger-causing food literally turns people into the cannibalistic faminite monsters, and what stops her in the end? bison billie chewing off her arm after being infected by one of the faminites. she quite literally creates the thing that kills her, and her famine domain is very closely tied to that downfall - if she hadn't been doing it, she would have lived
Conquest/Victoria
obviously they don't attack her before breaking the other rings, but it's worth briefly noting here that the bounty hunters do very much follow her domain, by killing the other horseman and stealing their power - they're really just conquering the domains of every other horseman for themselves
... moving on
ok! now that's out of the way, we get to the actually interesting bit: what's changed the second time? if the posse didn't defy the domains correctly the first time, how did they definitively do it in the finale? here's how:
Garnet vs Famine
the garnet/famine connection is overall a bit weird to me, but she does prove in her section that she can exist without magic - the "something more" that victoria says she's hungry for - by defeating the ghoul on her own. her leaving the deadlands at the end of the episode also arguably shows this, as she's more powerful there than on earth but leaves nonetheless. not much of a betrayal of "famine" in unger's sense but certainly of how victoria describes her
Nate vs Death
in terms of this.... theory? meta? nate is perhaps one of the less strong points, but his scene with delacey does show him not only overcoming the darker parts of his harrowed nature but also actively threatening to shoot himself. compared to the hangin' judge's obsession with his own righteousness and immortality, it certainly feels like nate is breaking victoria's description of him "overcoming death". he might be undead, but nate very much sees the value of mortal things like a life (and money)
Edie vs Pestilence
my favourite segment of the finale! edie is tied to pestilence by victoria due to her grief, which is like a festering disease or infection. and her segment definitely reflects her growing past that - edie being stuck in a memory, trying to protect a brother who already died, literally hurts both edie and the people around her (garnet). it's only when she puts eddie to rest and looks past that "pestilence" of grief that she can go back to helping the people who matter _now_
Delacey vs Conquest
this is a really nice character moment from delacey, and unlike the others, it seems to be almost entirely on the player rather than andy as the marshall. first, note that delacey's linked to conquest because of his violent & competitive streak, which is especially obvious in dead man's worth. he tries to pull his gun on victoria at the beginning of the episode, and he's previously joked about trying to gain supernatural powers like those nate/garnet possess
but when faced with opportunities for power (victoria's offer) and violence (nate attacking him, harmless victoria), delacey doesn't take them. he's the one who wants to kill victoria, he sits down and lets nate slash his chest open, and he reluctantly lets victoria live even though he desperately wants to see her dead. he denies again and again the option of violent conquest like the kind she encourages.
Re: Silas
... and then there's Silas vs War. or rather, there isn't. because as far as i'm concerned silas doesn't ever get that moment. when face-to-face with bellows (which i also find weird), silas accepts bellows' terms and plays by his rules. they duel, just like delacey & bellows did the first time, and silas shoots his neck (familiar, again), and then he angrily kicks bellows into the wall. there's no denial of that anger victoria saw in silas, no denial of bellows and his methods
compared to his big damn hero moment against boudreaux with his lawman's gun, this just felt weird. and that could just be me overthinking, or the dick bit getting in the way of roleplay (not the first time), or andy not finding another way for silas to "face" war in the finale, but what if it's something else?
silas is initially very quiet in the discussion about victoria's proposal (alongside garnet, who seems more interested in getting the rings' powers than anyone else), and happily admits to her appraisal of him. bellows is also the only one of the horseman who wasn't obviously supernatural in his first appearance, and the only one who comes back physically "alive" in the finale (because he's in service to victoria). through this lens, it feels like there's something very clearly different about silas and bellows than about the other members of the crew.
maybe that's on purpose. maybe silas only really stopped benjamin bellows, and not the horseman of war. would certainly be cool if silas Changed next season :)
(or maybe it's just a writing choice i don't like and i'm going to write an alternate timeline fic about it <3 you never know)
tldr;
the horseman can only be beaten properly when the "new horseman" proves victoria wrong, but silas didn't, and wouldn't it be nice if that paid off somehow
