A vast underwater ravine off the coasts of New York and New Jersey could soon become a national marine sanctuary.
Hudson Canyon sits about 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. It's more than 7 miles wide and 2.5 miles deep at its largest point. It's home to many protected and threatened species, including sperm whales, corals and sea turtles, and is important for fisheries, recreational diving, whale watching and birding, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
NOAA announced Wednesday that the canyon is being considered for sanctuary designation. A public comment period is open until Aug. 8.

Today’s bit of #YoungWizardsMeta
So today’s news tells us that President Biden is proposing that Hudson Canyon be designated as a new national marine sanctuary -- more or less the undersea equivalent of a national park.
Since this area appears prominently in Deep Wizardry, you might gather that I might be pleased by this. And yeah, I really am!
Meanwhile, this event reminded me that I really needed to dig out my DW maps (for which I still have the originals) and post copies of them to the Young Wizards website. So I’m doing that. Meanwhile, you can see them here.
The originals had to be hand-drawn because (a) there was almost no public-domain info about the deep-water terrain available from anyone but the NOAA, and (b) the only place that then had such info where I could get at it was the “main branch” of NYPL at 42nd and 5th in Manhattan, and (c) they were “stacks material” that could not be taken out of the library to be copied elsewhere. But they could be taken upstairs from the stacks to the Frederick Lewis Allen Room -- the “writers’ room” that you could get into if you were lucky enough to have a contract, and they had space for you -- and so there I sat and drew these (with India ink and a Cro-Quil pen. Letraset was added later on the second one).
This one was my initial “draft map” for use while working on the MS away from the library.
Tumblr media
...And this was the one that was later used in the Dell hardcover and Yearling paperbacks of DW, and the Harcourt paperbacks that would follow.
Tumblr media
...Eventually, since we have so much more data now than we did in 1984, when I drew these, I’ll need to prepare better and more polished versions to go into newer versions of the book. But in the meantime: here these are!

Okay buckle up I had a WEIRD dream about totk last night—
So it started off by showing the entire map of the game, which was totally different from the botw map, pretty much no similarities aside from the size and vague location of things, like the desert and zora’s domain.
The biggest deal was that apparently when Zelda sealed away Ganon with her powers at the end of botw, this huge tree grew up in the middle of castle town, pink like the deku tree and that tree on satori mountain, and in the time between botw and totk, smaller versions of these trees popped up all over the place, and now were the only trees around, replacing all the others.
I remember looking around the map at all these big and small pink trees all over the place, and noticing there were also huge canyons and pits spread around, (the reason for these was never elaborated on), especially noticing this one huge canyon on the left side of the map that was shaped like calamity ganon. I think I made a post about it on here being like “DID ANYONE NOTICE THIS???” and apparently I was the only one XD
Anyway I think the actual game started in castle town, still overshadowed by this huge tree (it felt protected though, it wasn’t menacing), but for some reason whenever you were in castle town the game was top-down view? And had really ugly colors. People got really mad about it, they thought it looked bad and were complaining soooo much.
It gets a little fuzzy after that, but I remember making Link walk up to this couple (might’ve been Rhondson and Hudson?) and they had a baby, and you could push a button and make Link hold the baby?? I remember being so happy that was a mechanic, and ran around taking the time to hold everyone’s babies and talking to the people who had them. You could also pet dogs, but that wasn’t as exciting for some reason.
After all that Link finally left castle town, and it looked more like botw then, no longer top-down view. The pink trees were everywhere, it was like all of Hyrule became this big forest and the road itself was a huge tree root or branch maybe.
I put Link on his horse and looked around for this shrine I knew was around, but after I found it a little message popped up saying “this shrine’s enemies are too tough for you to tackle right now!” kind of like the “you can’t go any further” sign that pops up when you reach the edge of the map. And no matter what I did, I couldn’t enter the shrine, so I gave up and kept going.
I really don’t remember much after that, but I think I was trying to find Zelda, because it turned out the trees were a sign that something was wrong with her, but I woke up before I could find her.

Day 6: Lookout Landing and Hyrule Castle Gatehouse
I wake stiff and cold. It's been a while since I camped out.
It’s so strange that nobody here seemed particularly astonished by all the floating islands, which suggests they've been there for some time. Even 100 years after the Calamity, people at the stables still talked about it. Maybe I was right, and the monumental changes in the landscape really are old news? Where does that leave me?
I need more information. It's time to go to the tower. I whistle for Peaches, and we're off.
On the way there, a very unwelcome development - some of the trees are uprooting themselves and chasing me. This is... frightening, but thankfully they are slower than a sprinting horse.
Tumblr media
The guards Drozer and Burwar recognise me at the gates to the tower - or, at least the gates to Lookout Landing, which appears to be the name of the settlement. It sounds as though I was last here in their lifetime... and Burwar says that Purah is here! Though she does have the secret to eternal life, so that doesn’t really give me any clues.
I find Robbie here too! But then, I could absolutely see him trying out Purah’s method of life preservation. Surely I must know someone who doesn’t have a preternaturally long lifespan?
The Castle looms darkly over this otherwise cheerful encampment. The Gloom is so thick it reminds me of Malice, but it seems more ephemeral. It pushes at the Castle from below, rather than simply coating everything in that ichor of Calamity Ganon.
Tumblr media
I find Purah, older than she was and in control. Her presence is somehow grounding. She listens to my experience of the last few days. She recognises the name Rauru - as the first king of Hyrule. I never did get on with kings of Hyrule, especially as ghosts. But how long ago did he live? Surely Zelda knew him as a ghost, then. She can’t have… no.
The Upheaval is what they're calling the Castle rising and the ruins falling. Those researchers yesterday said that the chasms turned up around the same time. So much change. Is it because Zelda and I went beneath the castle? Or would the same thing have happened without us there? That hand - Rauru's hand - only fell off the mummy creature when we arrived. And now I bear it…
Purah thinks Zelda might be trapped beneath the castle, but I'm not so sure. What I saw on the sky island... I think it's more complicated than that. Still, I follow Purah's orders to meet with Captain Hoz’s search party. Surely they will know something.
Having to tell everyone, one by one, that I lost the Princess, that though I am back she is still missing, crushes me. I’ve failed.
I meet a guy called Addison who works for... President Hudson! Well, sounds like he's thriving. I hope his wife is well.
Tumblr media
The people who guard Lookout Landing and the road up to the Castle are a mixture of mercenaries and guards. I’m sure I once rescued Oliff from bokoblins in Gerudo Canyon… which implies I haven’t been gone for too long, as he still seems young and hale. Purpen at the gatehouse has amazing dress sense, and useful information - it seems all the weapons in Hyrule have decayed in the Upheaval. That creature’s Gloom had a similar impact on the Master Sword - if that blade couldn’t resist it, nothing could. Except… my gear from the sky islands seems untouched. Perhaps it only affects metal, or certain kinds of metal?
This motley crew is a shallow facsimile of the Castle Guard I used to know - though I know that time has now passed beyond the living memory of most. Only a few of us are left who remember it. I’m sure these people are doing their best.
I head up the hill as instructed and find Captain Hoz. I’m not sure he knows much more than me - they haven’t even made it past the Gatehouse.
But then we see the Princess!! She faces us from the next tower in that strange Zonai garb, her face impassive - and then before I can move she turns into light and vanishes.
Tumblr media
Hoz orders me to report to Purah and I ignore him, racing to where the Princess stood. But there’s no sign of her. Nothing there but a Korok. What’s happening? Why can’t she send me some kind of message? If she’s away from me against her will, how can she have appeared here - and why would she leave?
I stay on the tower’s edge until dawn.

Happy Birthday Scottish actor Ewen Bremner, born January 23rd 1972 in Edinburgh.
Bremner has worked with many of the most respected directors in world cinema, including Danny Boyle, Mike Leigh, Ridley Scott, Joon-Ho Bong, Werner Herzog and Woody Allen. Hen has established himself by creating unique characters in critically acclaimed films, as well as going toe to toe with many of Hollywood's biggest stars.
Ewen had worked widely in theatre, television, and film for years before being cast in his breakout role in Trainspotting, by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle. He was the first to be cast in the role of Mark Renton in Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre production but lost out to Ewan McGregor in the film version, instead he was handed the role of Spud Murphy and earned screen immortality with his character's infamous "speed fuelled" job interview scene.
Prior to Trainspotting, Bremner gave a striking performance in Mike Leigh's Naked, fellow Scot Susan Vidler played his girlfriend Maggie in this excellent film.
In 1999, Bremner received critical acclaim for his portrayal of a schizophrenic man living with his dysfunctional family in Harmony Korine's Julien, Donkey-Boy. Filmed strictly in accordance with the ultra-realist tenants of Lars Von Trier's Dogma 95 movement and starring opposite Werner Herzog, Bremner played Julien its eponymous hero, requiring him to assume an American accent. He then worked with director Michael Bay in his high-profile 2001 war film Pearl Harbor, proving his versatility once again by portraying the role of a wholeheartedly patriotic American soldier fighting in WWII. The following year, he stepped back into fatigues for a supporting role in Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down, while rounding out the next several years with roles in high-profile Hollywood releases such as The Rundown, Disney's Around the World in 80 Days), AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Woody Allen's Match Point, the comedy Death at a Funeral directed by Frank Oz, and Fool's Gold starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson.
This past few of years proved to be a busy when Bremner was invited to join the DC Universe in the Zack Snyder-produced feature Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, co-starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Ewen also reprised his unforgettable role as Spud in the highly-anticipated sequel to Danny Boyle's cult classic, T2: Trainspotting
Bremner appeared in the TNT Drama Series Will with Shekhar Kapur. The series told the story of the lost years of young William Shakespeare after his arrival to London in 1589 but only lasted one season. Other notable film credits include Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Perfect Sense starring again alongside Ewan McGregor, Great Expectations, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Snowpiercer starring alongside Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. Further credits include Exodus: Gods and Kings, Wide Open Spaces, Mojo, Mediator, Faintheart, Hallam Foe, Sixteen Years of Alcohol, and Snatch.
In television, Ewen has worked on many acclaimed productions including David Hare's Worriker trilogy starring Bill Nighy for BBC, Jimmy McGovern's Moving On and also his Australian mini-series Banished, Strike Back for Sky TV, Dominic Savage's Dive, the Dylan Thomas biopic, A Poet In New York and the adaptation of Day of the Triffids for the BBC. Other noteworthy series appearances include portraying legendary surrealist Salvador Dali in the U.K. television drama Surrealissimo: The Trial of Salvador Dali, and a guest spot on the successful NBC series, My Name is Earl, not to forget an early appearance in Taggart way back in 1990.
More recently Ewen has been in the, in my opinion, very funny series Our Flag Means Death, the film Canyon Del Muerto about the worlds first female archaeologist and the highly rated Freedom's Path, set in the US Civil War, it is due out soon.

Hockney's Pictures
Thames & Hudson, London 2006, 368 pages, 325 ill., paperback, 22x23,5cm, ISBN 9780500286715
euro 35,00
email if you want to buy [email protected]
The story of David Hockney, one of the most widely acclaimed of all living artists, is one of passion: passion for seeing, passion for telling, passion for images. But to these should be added passion for life. Hockney's art is a celebration of what it is to be alive. All his pictures - sometimes tender, as when he draws close friends and family; sometimes playful, as in his paintings of lazy, carefree days at the pool; sometimes awe-inspirin, as with his monumental images of the Grand Canyon - convey what it means to be in the world, to see it, to move in it, to love it. This constant exploration of how to communicate such feelings through art emerges with particular clarity in this stunning, lively volume, which charts almost fifty years of extraordinary creativity.
Hockney's Pictures is the first definitive 'retrospective' to show the evolution and diversity of Hockney's prolific paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints and photography. The works, including many that are new and never published, have been selected and organized by David Hockney himself, and track his lifelong experiments in ways of looking and depicting.

The Age of Monsters: Case File New York, 1957
"What the cumulative effects of all these atomic explosions will be, only time will tell."
~ Thomas Nesbitt
It was only a few short weeks after the JSDF successfully buried Monster 01 under an avalanche of ice and snow at Kamiko Island, just north of Hokkaido, that atomic tests would continue to be conducted by the world superpowers. Far up in the Arctic, Operation Experiment would go off, and end up setting free a giant theropod 60 meters from nose to tail tip that had been hibernating there lord knows how long. Upon it's freedom, it would devour all but one of the research team, leaving physicist Thomas Nesbitt as the sole witness of the great beast.
Over the following weeks, he would try to warn others as he recovered, but most would just call it a delusion. It isn't until after fishing ketch's go missing off of Grand Banks and Marquette, and then a lighthouse being destroyed mysteriously in the night that Nesbitt's story would gain the attention of the Dr. Thurgood Elson and his assistant Lee Hunter. After both Nesbitt and one of the surviving fisherman both individually describe the creature in the same detail, Elson concludes that this is a newly discovered species of dinosaur, dubbing it Gorosaurus Elsoni.
Dr. Elson would take a diving bell down to the Hudson Canyon and attempt to view the creature for himself, only to be another victim devoured by it. Gorosaurus would eventually come ashore in Manhattan, claiming the lives of 180 people during the initial rampage.
Eventually, the US Military with the aid of single tank, would score a direct, albeit not fatal, hit on the dinosaur, forcing Gorosaurus to retreat further into the city and disappear. As the soldiers continued to hunt it down following the blood trail, they all started to fall ill, one by one. An ancient pathogen was in the theropod's blood. A new strategy would be needed to take down the beast as well as the disease it contained.
Dr. Nesbitt would approach Col. Evans about using a radioactive isotope to kill the creature and the virus in one fell swoop. Dressed in protective gear, Nesbitt and Evans, armed with a rocket grenade loaded with the isotope along with a platoon of soldiers, would pick up the search following the blood trail to burrow underneath the Chrysler building. Flares were used to lure the beast out into the open. Once the wound was visible, Evans took the shot. Gorosaurus would writhe in pain at the base of the skyscraper, collapsing to the ground. It's movements would finally stop as its body succumbed to the radiation poisoning. Monster 04 had been eliminated.
But as we know today, Gorosaurus is but one of many that would continue to pop up ever so often.

If you made it down this far and have been paying attention to the Age of Monsters project, this is the first major lore change from standard Toho lore. I wanted to pay tribute to "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" only with Gorosaurus in the role of the Rhedosaurus (mainly to keep with using only Toho kaiju for this project). Also, this helps with expanding the more global nature of this project, so expect to see more changes like this to become a more original timeline.

On Glass Onion (2022)
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Glass Onion (2022), directed by Ryan Johnson
An Entertaining murder mystery with an up-to-date depictions of an exentric millionaire Miles Bron played by Edward Norton, instagram influencers and wealthy "distruptors", people in power. Who does not love Daniel Craigs Detective Benoit Blanch and a "come back" for Kate Hudson. It is crystal clear that this movie is about entertainment but it also tries to sort of critique the 1% lifestyles. I don´t think it does it very well but it tries.
Like the first Knives Out film this one has interesting use of paintings and art work in the back ground as sort of easter eggs for the viewers. First of all there is a terrifically tasteless shirtless portrait of Edward Norton/ Miles Bron (more on the subject here). Next to it a painting that looks as if Francis Bacon would have painted a triptych of Ronald MacDonalds. Then some Mondrian and Picasso... Money money money... And Kanye West? We get to solve the riddles and mysteries at the same time with Detective Blanc. 2. Icarus, Matisse, image from here
Flying too close to the sun, Icarus got his wings burned. Also kind of a portrait of Miles Bron. This depiction also looks like a bang-bang-bullet- to-the-chest.
3. An upside down Mark Rothko painting! This is a clever way to show how little Millionaire-Miles knows about the art works he owns. Mark Rothko´s 207, spotted here
4. Tomlinson court park 1, Frank Stella, image from here
Abstract minimalism that looks lika a puzzle, a maze. Also hangs on its side, just behind Daniel Craig.
5. Still life with mandoline and galette, Pablo Picasso, image from here. Nothing quite like a Picasso piece to signify that you are filthy rich
6. Untitled (Bacchus 1st Version IV), Cy Twombly, image from here
Blood red, cool abstraction sold at Sothebys for $15.4 million
6. Nichols Canyon, David Hockney, image from here
Last but not least the glass sculptures

Pinetree Lake, BC (No. 1)
The British Columbia Interior, popularly referred to as the BC Interior or simply the Interior, is a geographic region of the Canadian province of British Columbia. While the exact boundaries are variously defined, the British Columbia Interior is generally defined to include the 14 regional districts that do not have coastline along the Pacific Ocean or Salish Sea, and are not part of the Lower Mainland. Other boundaries may exclude parts of or even entire regional districts, or expand the definition to include the regional districts of Fraser Valley, Squamish–Lillooet, and Kitimat–Stikine.
Home to just under 1 million people, the British Columbia Interior's 14 regional districts contain many cities, towns, airports, and associated regional, provincial, and national parks connected by the province's highway and railway network. The region is known for the complexity of its landforms, the result of millions of years of tectonic plate movements. The ecology of the region is dominated by temperate coniferous forest with patches of alpine tundra found atop its numerous mountain ranges.
The Northern Interior Plain is a continuation of the interior plain that takes in nearly all of Alberta and southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It extends from Monkman Provincial Park and Tumbler Ridge in the south, to Hudson's Hope and the Williston Lake in the west, to Fort St. John and Charlie Lake in the north. The term is used to mean the whole of the Northeastern Interior east of the Rockies, including Fort Nelson and other parts of the Liard drainage, and before W.A.C. Bennett Dam included the upper Peace River through its canyon between Finlay Forks and Hudson's Hope.
