So I’m trying to understand how exactly this situation happened, and this is what I think

This was obviously Naruto’s idea

He probably claimed that Team 7 could eat way more ramen than Team 8

Kiba would have gotten into a fight over this assertion and said his team was the BEST, most AWESOME team that could eat the most ramen in all of Konoha

This quickly escalates into a verbal borderline physical brawl

Hinata tries to break up the fight to no avail

Shino would be internally bristling at being ignored yet again

Until Kiba calls on him to defend their team’s honor, proving that he wasn’t forgotten after all

Then both of them turn to Hinata. She sweats nervously at the intensity of their stares

“Don’t get soft on us, Hinata.”

“That’s right. Why. Because - “

Poor Shino is cut off when Sai asks who would pay for all that ramen

At this, Yamato starts sweating nervously, praying to all the gods that it won’t be him

Naruto nominates Kakashi to be the referee. Yamato breathes a sigh of relief. Kakashi being the referee means Yamato won’t foot the bill

Kakashi does not breathe a sigh of relief. He wonders if he can get a discount from Teuchi and Ayame by showing them his face

He goes along with it, though, because his students are cute, he’s happy that Sai is being more social, and they all need a breather considering the threat of the Akatsuki

Deep down, all of them understandably thought Naruto would win

The match begins
