Was there a part where oda said crocodile was like Luffy in personality? I thought that when oda compared them he was referring to how quickly crocodile gained his bounty like Luffy
Though I would love to see a parallel of crocodile and Luffy. Imagine how devastating his life must’ve been in order to make someone like Luffy become someone like crocodile
Correct you are, the only time Oda's pointed out a similarity between Luffy and Crocodile was during that one SBS (vol 78, page 86), about how the two rose to fame as pirates really fast
So we don't really know what Young Croc was actually like, all we can really do is analyze his behaviour and make some guesses. And yeah. The poor bastard's had it rough, clearly 🥲💔
Interestingly, jaded as he is, there are these little similarities between Crocodile and Luffy*, and based on the conversation the two had during their final battle, he does make it sound like he might've been a bit less bitter etc before all his hopes and dreams were crushed forever. Which does make it sound plausible Young Croc could've been similar to Luffy
*(Willingness to make deals and the lowkey expectation to have a promise honored, agreeing about stuff like casulties being unavoidable and that there's no such thing as fairness in a fight between pirates, etc) (But then there's also those dark reflections where you can see how the two are different, like how Luffy's horrified of being alone while Croc was seemingly happy to spend like 14+ years of his life by himself etc)
But while it's plausible, whether or not young Crocodile was similar to Luffy just ends up depending on what kind of circumstances he grew up in.
Like although he was lonely at times and had to fight for it a bit, Luffy was generally speaking surrounded by people who loved him and cared for him. Luffy was accepted by those around him.
Meanwhile, Baby Croc (and even his Seraphim) does seem like a bit of a sour puss. And... what can I even say. If he was raised in an uncaring environment and was surrounded by people who didn't accept him, or would humiliate and mock him endlessly, that would explain Baby Croc's seemingly serious demeanor. And considdering the high likelyhood of him being trans... yeah, I dunno, not doing gender correctly as a kid is one way to get bullied relentlessly and get completely alienated by everyone else.
(And that's just A Suggestion, there's about a dozen other possible things that could've happened to Croc that could cause a child to get alienated similarly) (And this is just to get him off to a bad start, then there's All The Shit That Could've Happened To Him As A Young Adult that would just reinforce all his trauma etc)
And if he's been essenitially alone ever since he was a kid... I do find it unlikely he was ever SUPER SIMILAR to Luffy as a young adult, let alone as a child (if anything I'd almost imagine him having been a bit more like Ace)... But at the same time, I do feel like even now, deep inside him there might still be the remnants of a happier person
You probably can't undo all the hurt he's gone through to turn him into an absolute ray of sunshine like Luffy. But I think one could maybe get him to relax a little bit or something

yuuta exhibits such previously abandoned, recently adopted dog behavior. incredibly anxious all the time, even though nobody’s out to get him or leave him behind. waits for you to return home or from school or from work excitedly, just to see you when you walk through the door. follows you around senselessly, hovering in your space just for the sake of companionship. initiates affection in prodding ways—starts off next to you, then a hand on your thigh, then deems it safe to lay all the way down, then slowly pushes his head into your lap. gets up whenever you need to get up, and resumes his position as soon as you’re ready. brings you gifts as a sign that he’s thinking of you, and maybe because he likes the affection it brings out in you, maybe because he likes the gentle affirming touches of a hand in his hair or a pinch to his cheek. rests his head on your stomach or his chin on your shoulder when he’s sleepy, stays there, immobile, and will not move unless absolutely necessary. sometimes he gets surprised when he hears you calling for him, there’s a moment of disbelief as he thinks “me? really? you need me?” but it’s very quickly overshadowed by this compulsive need to show up, to please, to do anything for you, which is why he always answers when you call. he doesn’t realize that he has puppygod eyes, especially when he’s excited or confused, but he does and it’s incredible endearing. very reluctant to share your space or attention after a while, considers that to be sacred and he won’t risk being let go or lost again, so as a safety precaution, he keeps himself right by you, waits for you always.

Mobius dealing with Loki's feelings: "Tell me everything slowly and we'll figure it out together. You're amazing. I'll do anything for you. I just want you to be okay. I'm with you no matter what happens."
Mobius with his own feelings: "I'm going to bury this until I die or it bursts out randomly. If it does I'll act like nothing happened. If I dissociate enough maybe it'll go away."

I finally finished reading the fourth volume of svsss in full, and thing is--the first time through I only read the bingqiu content because I was ravenous for more of their happy ending.
Turns out that was a perilous mistake.
Because I started reading the airplane extras. And I swear to god. MXTX is trying to kill me
What do you MEAN demon lord Binghe was sitting on his big fucking throne. All stoic and forbidding. Surrounded by his demon generals who don't know shit about human courtship. Asking them what he should do, fully demoralized by constant rejections from sqq, only to have airplane tell him to act more pathetic and needy. Which is already hysterically funny and insane, UNTIL LBH'S RESPONSE IS THIS, KILLING ME INSTANTLY:
LUO BINGHE. WHY DOES HE SAY IT LIKE: "I already tried that, didn't work--nothing works :/ not mean, not maidenly, not housewife, not spicy, not capable disciple. Is doubling down on clingy really all it will take? What's a born hater with only one love in his life to do????"
The dichotomy of him sitting there like 'how can I reach the unfathomable depths of shizun's heart?' A HEART HE'S ALREADY WON OVER, MIND and then in the Holy Mausoleum solving the puzzle without blinking and being like 'oh yeah you just have to hit the acupoints, no sweat.' Literally the comedy writes itself I'm so--
How am I supposed to be normal about this. MXTX understands the juicy quintessential queer joy of a person with the world's power at their fingertips wishing only for love. Willing to do anything to earn that love, when unbeknownst to them it's already been freely given. Totally not screaming and yelling and clawing at the walls
And that's not even touching airplane's uproarious account of events. The way he's like 'lol what's next, lbh and sqq are best friends now? smfh' only to see lbh TACKLE SQQ LOVINGLY. FOR SQQ TO BE BASHFUL ABOUT IT BUT SO SO FOND OF THE LITTLE SCAMP. This when we've been experiencing sqq's constant inner monologue of 'I'm so cool and so dignified about my role, truly the epitome of propriety and poser-level fortitude.' Meanwhile, in their universe:
Airplane constantly flaming???? Sqq and lbh in his observations????? His absolute bewilderment and confusion????? Legendary. No notes every single second of this shit was hilarious.
Airplane's comment that sqq + older adolescent lbh traveling together was just watching a couple in their honeymoon phase. OR the fact that lbh is exceedingly petty and refuses to share their food in the wake of airplane's interruption of their time together, until sqq relents sheepishly and insists airplane eat what's left (ONLY AFTER PLACATING LBH WITH MORE FOOD FROM HIS PLATE, SOBBING)
Watching airplane salivate over Mobei-Jun and acting like that's totally normal behavior. Finding out mbj and airplane got together first. Finding out sqq encouraged airplane. LIKE THIS. WHILE HE IS STILL IN DENIAL ABOUT HIS OWN FEELINGS:
Mobei-jun clearly thinking their arrangement is a forever thing, heartbroken his human abandoned him with all the hapless fury of a scorned wife swept away by false promises of fidelity. Airplane writing demons to be the type to beat up their crush lovingly and still unable to connect the dots about mbj's feelings. Mbj letting him go and respecting his wishes, only relenting when there's indication airplane was poorly processing his own feelings and didn't actually want to leave. Mbj caring for him and listening to him as soon as airplane voices what he needs directly and with clarity. None of these gays are functional and it's everything to me
Unrelated, but I physically can't hold this information in anymore:
I'm still reeling from younger lbh having his sexual awakening from the image of sqq wrapped in the immortal binding cables. Condemn me as you like he was so, so real for that.
And no I will not be taking any comments about how luo bingge couldn't bear to see luo binghe cherished in ways he never got to have and all the haunting implications of that. I will also not be taking any comments about luo binghe's instinct to look for sqq in that alternate universe, only to be shaken to the very core to be unable to find his shizun anywhere. The unspeakable and latent horror of his relentless mind likely piecing together what happened, but unable to say it; to suspect what is true, and live with the harrowing confusion of his double's actions. To blame himself, to assume that he had let his anger get the better of him in that world and result in unspeakable folly...
I also refuse to talk about how heartrending it is to hear Tianlang-jun weakly say "In the end, I really can't bring myself to hate humans." The implication that the foolishness of that hope and bright-eyed fondness--the very thing that put him through such unspeakable agony--couldn't be beaten out of him entirely. To discover that his faith in Su Xiyan hadn't been misplaced, to the contrary: his beloved hadn't scorned him at all, but rather fought to the miserable end to protect the fruition of their genuine feelings of love when she couldn't protect tlj or herself.
How MXTX has sqq deliberately draw parallels between their situation and that of ygy+sj and tlj+sx; desperately wishing it might not be too late for them. The concept of breaking cycles of abuse and harm pervasive throughout the newly devised story, how it evolves for the better only when love takes the place of power, pride, and domination. How the moment sqq chooses vulnerability instead of saving face, the genre shifts to the so-called "cringe" girly genre where most if not every character is more fulfilled, more true to themselves. How the "male-oriented" former genre was aimlessly sensationalized and sexualized, how it was a sustained performance of aspirational toxic masculinity. How men objectify other men without end. All of the unspoken gendered implications that come with that.
Anyways. Going to go put my head in a sandbox and try to process everything I just witnessed because even a second reading is not enough to find a modicum of closure.

Life as a JGY stan is so hard because sometimes I want to make posts about the ways his very justified paranoia turns against him sometimes, rare moments where I think being more trusting or vulnerable would have helped but he felt like it couldnt, or talk about how his brutal survival instinct intersects with society's existing bigotries in a such a way that most of his violence is actually aimed at people lower on the ladder than him, with people like Jin Guangshan being the exception not the rule. Because he's a fascinating character and these parts of him are interesting!
But when I do that I have to live in perpetual fear of the moment that it escapes its target audience and someone takes it to go "Yeah he's a monster who fucked over everyone and is incapable of love! I wish he was killed earlier and his death was a thousand times more painful 🤪"
I mean, take my last example. Due to existing hierarchies it is, at any point, easier and safer for jgy to harm people less powerful than him instead of more powerful than him, even if the more powerful are the ones threatening his safety in the first place. Even knowing how it harms him and while working against it, Jin Guangyao is not immune to internalizing the mindset of the world he lives in. Even when killing Jin Guangshan- one man- it ends up costing the lives of 20 sex workers. You think I can bring up the sex workers in this fucking fandom? You think that will go over peacefully? The well has been so thoroughly poisoned here it feels like any conversation around morality automatically turns into a courtroom to determine a sentence for this fictional fucking character who's already dead.

Since I'm still thinking about Ming today... Let us compare Three Mings.
1. Ming when he's Scared*
*caught off guard by domesticity/affection and how much he likes and wants it
2. Ming when he's Trying*
*to fix the shit he does when he's scared, but still seem cool and controlled (of highest priority always)
3. Ming when he's Scared*
*deeply fucking terrified, scrambling, on the precipice of a complete break from sense and reason which he shan't recover from for years
And the thing is, which of these Mings do you think stays with Joe in his bones, in his gut. Which of these Mings are the Mings Joe remembers and thinks of as true?
Ming my babygirl, you have so so soooo much more Trying to try.
