Castlevania Language Headcanons

I spoke about language in Castlevania before. Like most media the series mostly just shrugs off the entire language barrier. People are just magically able to communicate. No matter from how far apart they actually are.

But personally I find it interesting to think about what languages the characters realistically would have spoken or been able to speak.

Trevor would probably mostly just know Romanescu (old Common Romanian). A language I might note that is a bit different than modern day Romanian, as it had a lot more slavic bits in there, than the modern language does. He might also have known bits and pieces of old Hungarian and Common Turkish, given the political situation at the time. Though I kinda doubt he would've been fluent. I do assume that his family once upon a time would have taught him Latin and Ancient Greek, but I doubt he would remember a lot of that.

Alucard meanwhile would probably know at least the ancient languages. I see Dracula as very intrested in teach him. So, I got to assume that Alucard will know Romanescu, Latin, Ancient Greek, but probably French, Hungarian, Turkish and maybe some Arabic as well.

Sypha seems to canonically just know all the languages. Given the effort was made to cast her with an Hispanic actress and having her speak with a Spanish accent, I assume Spanish is her mother tongue, but she clearly also speaks Romanescu and seems to at least be able to read a write a plethora of ancient languages. Given the fact she has travelled a lot, I will also just assume that she knows a lot of current languages at the time. Probably enough to understand most languages spoken in Europe.

It do assume the trio will use Romanescu to communicate with each other.

Assuming that Dracula is in this timeline still Mathias from France, he will speak Old French, though the question remains whether he understands the Middle French spoken at the ime the series takes place. I do assume though. Given his entire think with knowledge and his almost obsessive collection of it, I just am going to assume he has learned a lot of languages throughout his life, probably being able to at least understand most languages spoken throughout Europe and Asia.

Lisa probably only knows Romanescu, when she arrives at the castle. Maybe some Latin, if she had tried to learn some medicine before. I am going to assume, though, that Vlad is gonna do some work polishing her Latin and Greek at least.

Still assuming, though, that they are going to hold most conversations in Romanescu.

Hector and Isaac are a bit more complicated, of course. Because we know little about them.

It stands to reason, that Hector's mother tongue is Greek (given he grew up on Rhodes) and Isaac's is Arabic. Given he has probably consumed quite a lot of ancient texts and texts about alchemy, I think Hector will at least be able to read and write in old Greek and Latin. I also am going to assume that under Dracula he learned some Romanescu? He might also know some Turkish, given that during his childhood Rhodes was under Turkish control.

Isaac is a bit more complicated, because canonically we do not really know where he got enslaved and what not. In my headcanon I went with him being dragged all the way up to Italy, so he speaks Italian. Given he was a slave in a monastery and tried to help, I assume he knows Latin as well (and quite frankly, learning Latin, when you know medieval Italian is not that hard). I have him end up in Greece, due to the ongoing conflict with the Ottoman Empire, after he escapes. Hence, he speaks Greek as well.

Meaning that in all my Isaactor stuff, the two communicate a lot in Greek.

Given they end up in Austria, though, they do learn German soon enough. Speaking of which...

The sisters are interesting in regards to their lannguages.

Now, Carmilla very probably is from Austria and always has been from there, so she would speak Old High German as her mother tongue. Given she was a vampire for a while, she probably learned a few languages, though. I gotta assume she knows Latin at least, especially given that at the time Latin was kinda the official language of politics in many regards. I am gonna assume she knows at least some Italian, Old French and Hungarian, too.

As I explained before: I assume that Lenore originates in Scotland. But given she was taken from her family as a child, she knows very little in terms of Scottish Gaelic and for the most part her mother tongue is old English. Given she was nobility, she has learned Latin, too. She also is the diplomat of the group, so I gotta assume she knows quite a few other languages as well, just to keep up her position. Very certainly Romanescu, too, given it is Vlad's main spoken language and he seems to be the big boss of vampires.

Morana, of course... Honestly, I am just gonna assume she knows all the languages. The woman is more than a millennium old. Depending on whom you ask even older than two millennia. She had the time to travel. She knows all the ancient languages for certain and if she knows Akkadian, Persian and Phoenician the other languages springing from that will be easy. I have her travelling Asia, too, so she kows at least Hindi, Chinese and Japanese as well.

Striga is a bit more interesting. She speaks with a Slavic Accent and her voice actress is from Croatia. Which made me put Striga there, too. She has to have travelled a bit. And of course she will probably speak Old High German with the sisters. I kinda want her to have learned old Akkadian to speak that language with Morana. Because that would be sweet.

I am going to assume that in everyday life the sisters speak Old High German with each other.

I am also going to assume that Lenore, to woe Hector, is gonna speak Greek with him.

No doubt, he’s obsessed with curly and wavy hair. Trust me, he’ll have hands on them every moment he gets (twirling it around his fingers, holding it, flicking it). He’s obsessed.

With the shared sense of clothes, my man would absolutely persuade you to wear his. Trevor would be so eager to wake up and see you wearing one of his shirts of joggers (he’ll maybe find some arousal in it and… well, we all know what that means!) he isn’t too fussy about fashion and is glad you don’t care. Your clothes will end up dirty anyways.

Trevor likes someone understanding and caring. He has the tendency to surround himself with people who neglect his needs. It may be a whole new world to him and he may abuse it (testing your loyalty, making you worry, pressing your buttons) but he appreciates your efforts. Besides, you and Trevor both shared a sweet tooth! While you maybe socially burnt out, he’ll sit himself down beside you and steal some of your sugary snacks with that typical grin of his. He finds comfort in your silence and presence, something he’s unfamiliar with.

Your goofiness and sense of humour attracts him the most. After a while of warming up to Trevor, you’ll expose your true side and he’ll never forget it. He likes having fun with you, whether that’s sharing an inside joke or seemingly getting up to all sorts. Quality time is important to him as without being around you, he’ll grow in self-doubt and remorse.

You’d think he wouldn’t be the type to take notice of the worlds beauty but whenever he sees you hanging with animals or simply talking to a baby, he goes full on heart eyes. Suddenly he takes notice of his surroundings, especially when you are in it. Trevor may not engage in the interaction like you but will watch and admire. Most of the time he’s hesitant around a toddler and baby (because he has no idea how to act).

Trevor may be quite pushy about the car situation. He doesn’t know how to help people overcome their fears because he can barely overcome his. With a few days of acceptance, he’ll give up persuading you… for a while…

Head cannon: Svea's a bit of an oddball slytherin (as in she doesn't fit the general mold of a slytherin, she only comes off as crazy to people who witness one of her Eurovision rants, which is around 80% of the stuff that comes out of her mouth so meh, she's got a little bit of a rep as a nutty swede). She can seem standoff-ish or intimidating at first glance, her entire vibe is "arrogant and proud", and "proud of her arrogance", however, she's extremely outspoken and often involves herself in situations that she has nothing to do with (especially if someone is bugging one of her friends or she sees/hears something "stupid" aka bullying) and is a lot more approachable once she starts speaking. She's quite outgoing, and easily befriends people, as well as being well-mannered and polite (even towards people she hates. She makes her hatred clear, but she'll be saying "fu.ck off" with a smile and a "please and thank you"). She generally comes off as a very bossy "Swede" (and she's proud of that. The world would be a better place if everyone strived to be a little more like Sweden).

Strengths: Hardworking, passionate persevering, unrelenting, obsessive (I'd call it a strength), adoring/doting (bordering on becoming a negative trait though), highly self-aware, nerdy af, dedicated, ambitious, resourceful, and cunning (duh-doi, slytherin), independent, protective, proactive, aggressively European/Swedish

+Mom Friend: she's a total mom-friend (even fits in with her sort of GG role), she's ridiculously protective of and invested in her friends and family. It's not inherently a bad thing, hence it's in the strength list, she follows their love lives and is somehow always around to lend an ear/shoulder/offer to hex the fu.ck out of someone. She's always around to give (unsolicited) advice to friends, and really, everyone. However, her mom-friend behaviour can go to the negative extremes because not only is she willing to forgive anything someone she loves does, but she'd also go to any length to protect them, including ruining the lives of others (or literally ending said life) if she feels someone she loves is threatened in anyway. She has a lot of resources at her disposal and uses all of them to protect those she loves. Flashy social takedowns aren't really her thing, it's more framing someone for an illegal act and having them sent to some kind of prison. Her protective behaviour can border on the socio or psychopathic, as she displays a complete lack of empathy for the person who hurt her loved one (regardless of how small that hurt may have been) and seems to lack the ability to see them as another living creature, also seems to relish in the pain she caused that person, displaying a somewhat sadistic side of her as well.

+Boss As.s Bi.tch: she's commanding AF (behaviour she inherited from her Grandmama tbh), she's not as bossy when it comes to her circle of friends. There's an equal playing field there, but for anyone she does not consider a close friend, she's always bossy, her commanding tone increasing on how beneath her she thinks someone is.

Weaknesses: Elitist, unforgiving (except when it comes to people she loves, she's so forgiving of them), somewhat vain (but like, look at her), arrogant, narcissistic, elitist (though, you have to earn the right to be elitist in her eyes), manipulative (duh-doi, that's just basic slytherin-ing), cunning, b.tchy, salty, snarky, stubborn, relentless, aggressive.

+Superiority Complex: like, she doesn't think it's a problem, but it technically is. Her core belief is that if you want respect, earn it, and she feels she's worked hard to accomplish all that she has (well, except her money, that she was born into), so she has earned it.

+Hypocrisy: whilst she claims she has high moral standards, and certainly acts like she's above the idiotic "dark" behaviour her house has a reputation for, but when it comes to her friends, she forgives basically everything. She's like one of those mom's of bad kids who defends them regardless of what stupid shít they've done willingingly, like "Paul Ryan, you should know better. You know my son doesn't know anything about healthcare. Donnie trusted you, he's a slow boy. He's a slow boy, look at him! You took advantage of him." (It's an old, in this day and age, joke made by Trevor Noah about one of Trump's fox news defenders after the healthcare debacle). Anyway, Svea's friends could literally burn down the school or her house or kill someone and she'd be all "okay, here's how we're going to handle the authorities sweetie". Like, she wouldn't even question why did it. The only time she'd struggle with forgiving someone she loves would be if they hurt someone else she loves.

+a messy bítch who loves drama: it's low-key, somewhat, she's certainly not looking to start drama, but she absolutely, 100% wants to hear about it (hence she follows gossip witch), and if it's negatively affecting someone she cares about, she will involve herself to protect them, aggressively.

+Internalizing: she's not so good at sharing her own problems and/or feelings. Whilst she's always around to talk about her friend's issues and feels, when it comes to herself, she tends to shove it down between 60 layers of jokes and salt. When genuinely hurt by something or someone, she tends to just walk away and brood silently in a dark corner. She sees herself as a leader and believes that leader's can't go around showing weakness, so she struggles to open up about that side to even her closest friends.

Habits: - eye rolling (so much eye rolling) - tends to tune out her entire environment when she's in "the zone" (no longer walks and reads because she has run into and fallen off of stuff) - twirls her hair with her wand when she's thinking (like how we use fingers) - Swears a lot - hums Eurovision songs around 90% of the time - corrects people, all the time. Skills/ Talents: - multilingual (English, Swedish, French, Russian, German, and Danish) - magic (she has yet to encounter a form of magic she does not immediately excel at) - memory (it's not really eidetic or photographic, because it's not instant, but after 3 reads of a thing, she can rattle off the whole thing word for word) - making references (that's a talent right? Because otherwise, I am screwed) - emotional manipulation/acting (works best on people that don't know her, she can still manipulate other people, but it takes a little more effort and time) - obsessing (again, totally a talent right because otherwise I have literally no skills)

Any mental health issues: She's got some deeply buried mommy issues, and her narcissism is probably on the borderline of crossing into a disorder. But meh, nothing she's been diagnosed with, and definitely nothing that affects her daily. Actually, her perpetual repression of that could/should cause her emotional distress is probs another disorder, but again, eh. It'll probably all explode one day in some kind of breakdown, but she's basically fine.

The Prince Family Through her mother, Svea is the heir to the Prince Family, a British Wizarding Family who are absolutely psychotic when it comes to blood purity. They are an old family, left off the list of the "Scared Twenty-Eight" for unclear reasons, though Marcius Prince claims it's due an ancestors' very public liaisons and relations with muggle royalty/nobility. Old and pure-blood proud, the Princes are fervent purportors of the concept of blood supremacy and purity, and proud Slytherins. Having all been sorted into the House dating back to Salazar Slytherin himself (or so they claim). Due to centuries of inbreeding with other pureblood families (who are all cousins at this point), the Princes tend to have the following traits; violent tendencies, mental instability, and some are enfeebled (though the family goes to great lengths to hide and eliminate such members). Additionally, due to their close genetics, the family additionally has trouble conceiving, generally ending up with only one child born per generation. Their numbers are currently dwindling, and the name is expected to die if Svea's mother doesn't have another child (or not if Svea agrees to take their name, solid no on that though).

The House of Sauvageon The Sauvageon's are a very family old wizarding family, they were originally French, and later immigrated to Sweden in the late 1700's. Unlike most ancient wizarding families (particularly the British ones), they have never shied away from breeding with muggles and muggleborns, often gaining the label of "blood traitor" from the British families, but they're Swedish, and blood density is irrelevant there. There are as liberal and socialist as their country. ♣️ What is your character's relationship with their family? She has a very positive and close relationship with her paternal family. They were (and remain) her primary guardians, and growing up with the Sauvageon's in Sweden very much molded her into the person she is. Her grandmother is her role model, her sister is her *Gollum voice* precious, her step-mother inspired her to play Quidditch, her father instigated her love of eurovision and dragons, she considers the Sauvageon's her home. Her maternal family on the other hand, "poor" would be an understatement. Svea and her maternal grandfather (Marcius) actively hate each other, and it's not much better than that with her mother.

♣️ Which family member does your character feel the closest to?   She's quite close with her entire paternal family, but as of the last 12 years, it's definitely been her younger sister; Lili. She's a protective type of person, so having the responsibility of an older sibling was an absolute dream come true for this nerd.

Happiest Memory: she has quite a few, but the absolute number one would be the time she attended a Eurovision song contest with her father as a child (mathematically, but vaguely, it was probs around Marija, Dima, or Alexander's win).

Saddest Memory: when she learned that her father went missing. Like, it could be various arguments/standoffs with her mother, but her method for dealing with that is walking away/burying it, with her father going missing, there wasn't anyone to be angry at or someone to walk away from. Someone she loved was taken from her and she was literally powerless to do anything about it. Probably also why she's such an aggressive mom friend, on a subconscious level, she goes out of her to ensure someone she loves cannot be taken again.

How does your OC feel about pureblood supremacy?: She hates the "concept", and thinks it's the most idiotic thing ever thought up by someone. She was raised on Swedish ideals, a very liberal and socialist nation where blood purity or "impurity" is irrelevant, blood is blood, move the fck on. Muggle-borns have time and again been shown to be as powerful as any "pureblood", not to mention it's scientifically impossible for a person to have absolutely no muggle blood in their family histories, the wizarding population is too small when compared to the muggle population in the world, the species would've die out.

How does your OC feel about muggles/ half-bloods? Does your OC think they should be a part of the magical community? Of course they should be part of the magical community. Honestly, she supports the idea of reintegrating the magical and muggle worlds. What are they gonna do? Spread a nerve agent in their shops? They have magic and could easily handle any weapon the muggles send their way. She doesn't really understand why they have to hide.

Quick facts: Svea is half-Swedish, half-British, but was raised as a Swede from birth. Her mother's family was quite ashamed of the whole idea of a "liaison" and "bast.ardry" (how lame), thus she was born in semi-secrecy (secret from the British buddies of her mother's family) at the Sauvageon Estate in Enköping. Her paternal family has custody of her from birth, and she didn't see her mother or maternal family again for a decade (well, she was an infant, we can't actually be sure she ever did see her mother).

From the ages of 2-5, Svea was enrolled in Förskola, and when aged 6, she attended Förskoleklass, school for muggle children in Sweden (both are optional for Swedish kids, "Förskola" is preschool, available to children from ages 1-5, and "Förskoleklass" is preschool class, which I guess is effectively a year of kindergarten, for children aged 6). There she was integrated into muggle culture (or something like that, I can't remember the word I want) and made numerous friends, including one of her all time besties; Lara Coburg (the only one of her muggle friends to be introduced to the magical world, in a very Jacob Kowalski way now that I think of it, even though I hated him in the Fantastic Beasts movie). Lara is aware of the magical world and the only one of Svea's muggle friends who she maintains regular contact with.

After Förskoleklass, Svea attended 4 years of the muggle compulsory school in Sweden (which is for ages 7-16, and basically the north American equivalent of elementary through to high school), with the plan being that she would "transfer" to private, boarding school once she reached the age for magical schooling. However, when she was 10, her mother and maternal grandfather came to Sweden to claim custody and make her a British citizen, to meet the residential requirements to attend Hogwarts. The Sauvageon's initially refused, but as they loathe their local home school, Drumstrang (a very non-Swedish Scandinavian school, because Sweden is liberal af and Drumstrang is magic racist af), they agreed.

Svea spent a year living with her mother and maternal grandfather before being admitted into Hogwarts and did not like it in the least. They were horrified and appalled by the rambunctious, muggle-friendly, aggressively European child she was (and tbh, still is), and spent the year trying to force it out of her. They kept her isolated and cut off all her connections to her father's family, and tried to instruct her in the ways of pureblood, often screaming in frustration and anger when she argued back or simply replied with "so what" or "why". They later took to locking her in rooms, and starving her when she started leaving the estate on her own to mingle with the local muggle population. Eventually, their little war came to a head when they broke her electrical toys from her father's family, and in her fury, she magically set fire to the Prince Estate (on purpose, though they claimed it was an accident to the Improper Use of Magic Office). The fire resembled the Fiendfyre curse, and it was stronger than any fire Svea had produced before. Although no one died, the entire estate became ruins, and took 4 ministry workers plus her mother and grandfather to contain. After the incident, Svea was able to reconnect with her paternal family (crying to the ministry people there about missing her father and worried that her grandfather would say no because he's jealous of her other grandfather, yes she was faking her tears, anyway, they fell for it and informed her Swedish fam who immediately apparated to the Prince Estate). The Sauvageon's offered to pay for the restoration of the Prince Estate, but in exchange, Brigitta Sauvageon would be staying with them until Svea left for Hogwarts. Once that was settled, Svea and her maternal family became akin to strangers living in the same house, with Marcius Prince calling Svea and her aunt "unwelcome guests".

After she received her Hogwarts letter, instead of Diagon Alley, Svea's Aunt and Grandmother took her to Drottningsgränd, basically the Stockholm Diagon Alley (btw, I'm really proud of myself, because I googled Swedish street names and that effectively translates to "Queen's Alley" mostly because there's an actual street called "King's street", well, in Swedish it's "krongsgran" or something like that, tbh, I already forgot). Anyway, it resulted it quite a tiff with the Prince's, who insisted on Diagon Alley and wands from Ollivanders, they lost the argument on the later, but she did get her books, robes, and other school items from Diagon Alley. Also an adorable tawny owl they named "Fredrick".  

Additional Information: - her name is poorly made pun, like, "pun" is actually pushing it. "Svea" comes from a personification of Sweden, a derivative of "Svear", the Swedish name for the ancient Germanic tribe; the Swedes. "Svear" also later evolved into "Sverige", the Swedish name for Sweden and means "the realm of the Svear". Her surname, "Sauvageon", is a French form of "Savage", an English word, nickname, and surname meaning wild and uncouth, which was derived from a Middle English form of Old French; "salvage" or "sauvage", which meant untamed. Effectively, her name means Savage Swede, the flip around being a ref to the annoying flip around in the French language with certain terms and/or phrases (also in other languages, but French is the one I got beef with as a Canadian person). Richelle and Estelle are just because I like frenchy names that rhyme, and they're vaguely posh sounding, so I'm assuming her mother picked those ones. I say, assume, I made these characters, she did pick them for Svea.

Any Pets?: a tiger patterned kitten, super smol and super cute, but has been a "kitten" for a suspiciously long time. It's been tiny and like a baby since she first got it in her fourth year, though she simply claims that it's a rare Swedish breed. She named it Vhagar, after a dragon in ASOIAF because she's a massive nerd.  

Reputation at Hogwarts: All in all, Svea's got a pretty stellar reputation. She certainly doesn't cause any trouble, she's heavily active in school events and protective of younger students. She's always been doing her own "foreigner" thing, in everything she does, she's aggressively Swedish about it (and that's something she says herself). She's basically the high-achieving "socialist" elitist, she definitely thinks she's better than you, but she's not going to tolerate something as stupid as "blood purity" in "her" school. Her reputation is basically that of the smart, sporty, pretty "cool" girl. Or I guess simply "The Swede". Seriously, she's super liberal, she loves Eurovision, what about that isn't Swedish? Abridged Max chapter 1

Max's P.O.V. It's been a few months since I've moved back here and things have been going great, Chloe and me started out on a rough foot due to me not talking to her since we were 13. I guess I was kind of nervous about seeing her again due to the last time we saw each other. However, we have outcome our difficulties and moved forward. I even tried to get her to apply for a job, she laughed. Victoria finally took the stick was stuck up her ass and let me just say she is hilarious. We have a lot in common aside from our love for photography, we both love anime and video games. So sometimes we have video game battles or movie nights. I say that she has become one of my best friends...but I'm not letting her give me a makeover. And Kate, the change from October to now is amazing, she has gotten much better from her depression and still has some hard times. Yet with her defense squad(me, Chloe, and Victoria) no one messes with our bun bun. We still have our tea dates with some guests sometimes. I guess I might as well start with my story... It all started on a nice December day, it wasn't snowing yet but it was cold enough for wearing coats and boots. Since Kate's attempted suicide there were more rules to ensure the safety of all Blackwell students. Mr. Jefferson was arrested for the creepy obsession of kidnapping and photographing teenage girls. Nathan snapped and told the police what Mr. Jefferson forced to do, he finally got the help he needed and was sent to live in a mental institution. The curfew to be in dorms is 10 pm but on the weekends with parties it's pushed to 12. Security checks have been issued for vortex club parties, any student who maybe drank too much will be taken back to the dorm with an uber or one of their friends. Other than that, classes have been going good I can't wait until break starts so I can visit my parents back in Seattle. Photography my last class of the day, I am excited because the last day before the weekend. I walk into the room, we got a new teacher and she is better than Jefferson. I sit in my usual seat in the back with Victoria, Taylor(she is cool with me), and Kate. They all say hey which I smile back waving. "So girls...what is the plan for this weekend?" Victoria says. "Visiting my parents...again" Taylor says rolling her eyes. "Let's have another sleepover!" Kate answers excitedly. "I honestly don't know...the usual I guess" I say shrugging. Victoria groans. "You use that excuse every time Maxine, let's do something new" she quirks. "I guess, but what do you got in mind Tori?" I ask while doodling on my paper waiting for class to start. "Well I was think-" Victoria is cut off by a loud whistle which means class is about start. "We will discuss our plans after class" she mouths before paying attention to our photography teacher. Mrs. Crumestine was a wonderful middle aged teacher who studied photography since she was about 12, she got famous when her picture of "a day out in the park" was discovered by a famous photography when she was just 22. 'Boy, I hope someday I can be like her'. Over the past few years she has been photographing in Spain and Italy but decided to take this teaching job. At the end of the new term, she's going to take the photography class for a trip in Spain to get a taste of what the real world of photography is like after college. Wowzer. By the end of class,I'm nearly dozing off not because it's boring..because I spent last night over in Tori's room binge watching anime with her. Hehe, I rub the back of my neck thinking about the silly things that can happen at 2am. We got into a fight over cookies, next time I text my parents I'm going to ask for them two packets of cookies since Tori loves them so much. The final bell rings signaling that class is over with, Taylor and Kate have to do things so we say our goodbyes. I promise that kate for a tea date tomorrow when I'm not so tired. I gather my things and notice a pair of eyes staring at me, Tori knows me so well to get me tense under her stare. "Hey, Tori ready to go?" I say trying to avoid her earlier question. I start walking past her feeling her stare follow me. "Oh alright! How about this I'll text you later?...I might nap for a few hours" I plead. Victoria lets me go but playfully warns me. I laugh as I leave the room, I start walking down the hall towards the front of the school. Once I reach outside, I let a breathe I didn't know I held in. I continue walking when I spot Trevor and Justin. They are at their usually kickback spot with their skater friends. I walk towards them, they seem to notice them because they wave at me. "Hey Maximus prime! Whats popping?" Trevor says with his slang lingo that I don't really get why he says that. I give my usual just chilling answer. I swear I'm still in the retro age. I see Justin try to master a kick flip move on the skateboard and totally fail at it, with the skateboard hitting him in the balls. He is doubled over in pain on the ground. I cringe. Helping him up he mumbles "you don't know how painful that was" to me. He goes to sit down and curiosity gets the best of me, I walk towards his skateboard abandoned on the ground. "Whoa, Max! I always thought you were retro but I didn't think you would have any interest in skateboarding" Trevor says. I go to step on the skateboard, but first put down my camera bag. "Well haven't you heard? I've changed" I say while taking a few steps on the skateboard to get it going. I feel free and wild while feeling to breeze through my hair, I'm not mindful to where I'm skating because the next thing I know the skateboard wheel rides over a rock making me lose my balance. I brace myself for the impact. The last thing I heard is "Oh no Max!" Before I hit my head and blackout. Abridged Max P.O.V. 'Why the fuck am I laying on the floor and why is that skateboard weirdo looking at me?' These fucking weirdos are looking at me as I'm laying on the ground looking up to the beaaauttifulll sky, it is a nice sunny day I do say so myself. Hmmm, I sit up looking around at my surroundings and see I'm at Blackwell school. I wonder if Mr. Jefferson is in class still, maybe I can use some tlc from him if you know what I mean. The skateboarding weirdos keep asking me questions like "oh my god, are you okay?" And "whoaa you took a whammie" like what the fuck is a whammie?. I start getting annoyed with the questions and are about to tell them to screw off, when I see Vicky...ohhh Vicky is like my sorta kinda friend but enemy, I helped her when she got paint on her cashmere coat...my idea btw haha sucks for you not letting me in the dorms then I took a pic but she ransacked my room, I got her back for that. She hates it though when I call her Vicky. Ohh she's talking so I should probably listen. Emphasis on the probably. "Oh my gosh Maxine, are you okay? I heard what happened like why would you skateboard in the first place anyways?" She goes on for another 10 minutes but I notice a pretty pretty butterfly so my eyes follow where it's going. Fingers snap in my face, I look up annoyed and it's Vicky again. I finally decided to speak because why not? "What the fuck do you want Vicky?" I speak as usual since we aren't really friends. "Maxine, why are you calling me Vicky? And why are you talking in a welsh/Scottish accent?" Vicky says looking confused at me. 'Oh My gosh this is going to be a long week' as Vicky helped me up ewwww.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure I am generally a pretty critical reader, and it's almost embarrassing to write such a glowing review, but I can say without reservation that this book is a treasure. (And no, I am not a friend of the family. I haven't even watched him on The Daily Show, although I'll probably start to watch now.) Trevor Noah is a superb storyteller, and this memoir is his eloquent and touching account of growing up as the mixed race child of a single mother, living in poverty in deeply racist and sexist South Africa. He provides an inside look at a life very different from what almost anyone has experienced (due to his unusual ethnicity and upbringing), yet it is easy to relate to him and fascinating to read his stories. The book reads like a novel, but it is so much more affecting because it is true. Reminiscent of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it is a superbly written story of a perceptive and resilient child thriving in very difficult circumstances, and it beautifully captures these circumstances seen through the eyes of a child.Trevor's mother taught him to use humor to help cope with life, and he learned that lesson well. Despite having good reasons for feeling self-pity and resentment, Trevor had a knack for finding the humor in even the most difficult circumstances. Not forced, jokey humor, but just a low-key appreciation for the weirdness of life. As I turned the last page, I smiled at the ending, which was perfect, but I also felt sad that the story ended. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & Captivating...you should read this Wow...I started this book yesterday and could not put it down. As a new mom myself, I read most of it on my Kindle while either nursing or holding my son, which was fitting as this is such a tribute to his mom. As a long time viewer of the Daily Show, I started watching as Trevor took over from Jon Stewart and while I've always thought he does a good job, I had no idea the depth of character and experiences that were below the surface of those cute dimples! As is fitting to the Daily Show atmosphere, Trevor discusses difficult topics like race often, but I don't think I will ever watch a segment the same way again after reading his descriptions of what it was like to grow up under and during the fall of apartheid. And I keep thinking back to some of his impassioned pieces prior to the election with a whole new appreciation.But this review shouldn't be about his celebrity on the Daily Show. It stands alone as a remarkable memoir and a completely engaging story that will appeal to anyone who's felt like an outsider. He is a wonderful story teller, finding the right balance between relaying his experiences, weaving in the social atmosphere around it and doing it in such a way that even as an American reader, I was able to visualize the communities he was describing in rich detail. Additionally, he was able to explain aspects of a post apartheid world that not only clarify the plight of South Africans today but also shed light on some of the challenges we are facing here in the US. He has a unique perspective and a wonderful voice that I hope to hear more of in the future. Go to Amazon

5.0 out of 5 stars POIGNANT AND HONEST ESSAYS OF A GREAT COMEDIAN I have just finished Trevor Noah's autobiography "Born a Crime", a well written, sometimes sad and painfully honest account of his early life and upbringing in a race obsessed South Africa. He provides poignant insight to how difficult it was for him as a person of "mixed race", (his mother is isiXhosa and his father White German Swiss) to fit into any demanded and clearly defined racial pigeon hole. Although fluent in many African languages and brought up in a Black household, he was never really accepted as Black. So called Coloureds were suspicious of him because he had the wrong accent and background. He battled to find a niche in the gravitational "soort soek soort" environment of the Model C and Private Schools he attended. As a result he spent a lot his time alone and learned to be comfortable in his "own head". His anchor in this very confusing world was his religiously autocratic mother who struggled through famine and rarely feast, to provide a firm base for her bright, hard headed child who was by no means an angel. Consequently the rod was never spared and the child never spoilt by a mother determined to give him the best academic and moral education possible under very trying circumstances. Trevor feared the wrath of his mother and his abusive stepfather far more than the Law he brushed against during his creative but illegal ploys to earn extra money in a time of want.Some readers might be disappointed that this book is no extended replication of his stand up comedy but a heartfelt account of a mother caught up in a horrific cycle of spousal abuse tempered somewhat and exonerated by religious faith.
