I'm like. actively being abused at home. What do I even do about that.
#://#Today she said I am disgusting and unapproachable and will never have friends or find love because I make everyone I meet uncomfortable#Because I don't shave my legs#When I told her I keep blacking out from my chronic pain she said 'that's a little dramatic'#When I told her I should probably go to the hospital for that she shushed me because she was trying to watch her fuckin. Fringe show#Always with the shushing. Every time I speak :((#She said I should go out & do something and quit being so lazy. So i said I would ride my bike but the tire is flat#She said 'why are you so useless' :((#When I was projectile vomiting for three days I told her I had a 104°F temperature and she said 'darn'#I asked if she wanted to watch Ponyo with me and she said 'oh my god I don't want to watch your stupid crap shit'#When I dropped a cup of gatorade and mopped it up (agony for chronic pain btw) she felt where it was still sticky and said#I'm so stupid and it's my fault we have ants (we do not have ants)#So I said 'yeah mommy I think my fine motor skills are getting worse I can't hold things or swallow very well'#She said 'have you tried paying attention??' :((((#I told her I had a sunburn and it hurt and she said 'youre so needy'#I got beat up in middle school and I was crying about it and she said it was all my fault because I was annoying#I was also sexually assaulted that same week but after the way she responded to that I was not going to tell her#One time when we were at the doctor and checked yes for suicidal thoughts she started screaming and crying#About how much we hate her and think she is a bad mother and how ungrateful we are#If I read this list to her she would say I was making it up and trying to make her look like a bad evil person#Because she is!!! She insults and belittles me so much I genuinely wish she would just beat my ass instead#I'm 20 years old why are you talking to me this way#I know it's all verbal abuse but. Aeri was scrolling through her tiktok spam account as she felt extremely bored. She had been doing that for the past hour or so but eventually got sick of it. She got up from her bed and stretched a little bit before heading to the living room.
Their dorm was way too quiet — weird, she thought. There, she just saw Jimin sitting on the sofa, mindlessly watching some random tv show.
"Hey, where are Minjeong and Ningie?', she asked
"They went shopping, there's this new ghibli merch thing going on and Minjeongie was crazy about some Ponyo thing? I'm not so sure", Karina replied while looking up from the tv.
"UGH, ARE YOU SERIOUS? I told them I wanted to check it out!"
"I mean, you were with our room's door closed... Maybe they thought you were asleep?", Giselle sighed, plopping herself down on the couch.
"I hate them so much!"
"Nah, you don't", Jimin chuckled and Aeri sighed.
"You're right, I don't", she laughed along, "Gosh, I'm so freaking bored!", she got up, looking for something they could do together.
"Nothing good on tiktok or youtube?", she questioned.
"Ugh, nope! Oh do you wanna play chess?", she asked excitedly as found a board while tossing around some boxes they had inside a wardrobe.
"Uh, nah, I pass. It gets boring because you always win. Have you finished Evangelion already?"
"Yes, I am indeed the chess queen. And yup, third time I've watched it already this year"
Karina rolled her eyes. "Geez, nothing I suggest is good enough for you"
"Ugh, it's not that! It's just that I'm extremely bor- OH MY GOD! LOOK!", she showed Jimin her new found discovery.
"Oh, so you want war? Let's do it!", Karina's eyes glowed as she saw the 'Twister' board game on the other girl's hands.
They started setting the game up and reading the instructions, until they noticed it wasn't necessary. After all, who needs rules? They decided who was going to go first by playing 'rock, paper and scissors'.
"Okay! Left foot red~", Jimin easily positioned herself. The first moves were the easiest ones, of course.
"Uhmm, right hand blue", Aeri also quickly completed her instructions.
After the first few rounds, the girls were already getting tangled up a little bit.
Giselle started getting nervous, as Karina was a little bit more flexible than her. She was already feeling a little bit sore from keeping her posture in the game. So, she resorted to her last option: cheating.
"Okayyy, left hand on green...", the oldest girl stretched herself across the game's carpet. That position gave Aeri a chance at winning.
She started tickling the other girl's underarm, hoping she would lose her composure.
"Hey, dohohon't!", as expected, she fell from her position.
"YEAHH! I won!"
"You CHEATED! Tickling is against the rules, it's unfair!"
"Everything's fair in love and war, darling!", she winked.
"Okay, CHEATER!", Jimin retorted.
"Hey, don't call me that!"
"But it is what you are, C-H-E-A-T-E-R!"
"Okay, then! You asked for this, you brat!", Giselle quickly started attacking the other woman with tickles on her waist and stomach, making her fall onto the ground unable to escape.
"AERIHIHIHI S-STOHOHOP!", she pleaded as the tickler moved onto her underarms and armpits.
"Not unless you take back what you said!"
"BUHUHUHUT YOU DID CHEHEHEHEAT!"
"I did what? I can't hear you~ Just admit I won!", she teased Karina, as she started softly tickling her ears.
"Aweee, you're ticklish here? That's unexpected!"
"C'MON, STOHOHOHOP!", she begged but it was useless as Aeri had a great time torturing her.
"Stop what? Your laughing tells me you're enjoying this!~"
Giselle was having a lot of fun. She definitely did not feel very much bored anymore. On the other hand, Jimin couldn't stop squirming around and trying to break free.
"PLEAHAHAHESE GIGI!! STOHOHOP! I'M BEGGING YOHOHOHOU"
"I already told you! Just take back what you said about me and admit I'm the best twister player between us!"
"OHOHOHKAY! YOU WIN IHIHIT! YOU'RE NOHOHOT A CHEHEHEATER!", Aeri immediately stopped tickling her.
"Now that's what I wanted to hear!"
"Ugh! I hate you!", Jimin said as she regained her breath.
"Hmm, what did you say earlier? Oh yeah, 'no, you don't'!"

snowed in
fluff
amber x reader
1.1k words
a/n: amber loves studio ghibli movies and you two live in a cottage in the forest i don’t make the rules <3
Tumblr media
“wow, it’s really coming down out there!”your girlfriend said, seemingly surprised. you look up from your book, ”already? it just started snowing.”
“i know! that’s why i’m so surprised.”
“we’ll probably be snowed in at this rate.”
“ooh! that would be so much fun!”
“what part about getting snowed in sounds fun?”
“the part where i get to spend all day hanging out with my lovely girlfriend!”
you couldn’t help but laugh in response to that one. after a few seconds, she joined in with her own laughter. once you two were done, she started telling you her plans for the day.
“so i was thinking we could bake some cookies, and then we could go outside and have a snowball fight, and we could also play some board games and watch some movies!”
“amber, you know what happened last time you baked cookies.”
“i know, i know! but i promise i won’t touch the oven this time! pleaseee!”
“fine. you’re lucky i can’t resist the puppy dog eyes.”
꧁♡︎♡︎♡︎♡︎꧂
“so, what kind of cookies were you thinking of making?” you asked her, still somewhat hesitant of letting her in the kitchen.
“gingerbread! it is snowing after all.”
“ok, let’s get started then, those take awhile to make.”
after amber had grabbed you all the ingredients, you two got to work on the cookies.
“do you think you could preheat the oven while we cut out the shapes?” you asked her after finishing the batter.
“sure! what temperature do you want?”
“350 should be good. thank you!”
“it’s preheating now! which cookie cutters should we use?”
“ooh we should make houses.”
“yeah! then we can make some little men for the outside of them!”
“exactly!”
you made eye contact with her from the kitchen table and, for the second time today, both of you burst into a fit of giggles.
after some time, you two were done cutting out all of the shapes, and it was time to put them in the oven.
“ok! while we’re waiting for those, what do you wanna do next?” you asked her, once the timer was set.
“hmm. oh! let’s go play in the snow!”
“ok! let me go grab our coats real quick.”
꧁♡︎♡︎♡︎♡︎꧂
as soon as you had set foot out the door, she grabbed you by the hand and took you to build a snowman with her.
“wait! we need to get eyes and a mouth for him!”
“hold on i’ll go inside to get some coal.”
“ok! i’ll be here!”
after you had gotten the coal, you came back outside, only to be hit in the back by a snowball as you were closing the door.
“hey! i go inside to get coal for you and this is how you repay me?“
“haha sorry! i couldn’t resist!”
“it’s fine, but i need to change clothes once you’re done putting the face on our snowman.”
“ok!”
꧁♡︎♡︎♡︎♡︎꧂
by the time you had changed clothes and both of you had gotten warmed up by the fireplace, the cookies were done in the oven.
“while we wait for those to cool down do you wanna watch a movie?” she had asked you, after taking them out of the oven.
“sure! which one?”
“ooh we should watch ponyo!”
“ok, i’ll go get some popcorn and blankets while you get the movie set up.”
“on it!”
soon, you collected enough blankets and pillows, and made a bag of popcorn for the movie. when you got back to the couch, with all of the stuff in your hands, amber had already queued up the movie. you sat all of the blankets up, and sat down to cuddle her while you watched her favorite movie.
about an hour into the movie, you felt a slight weight on your chest, and looked down to see that amber had fallen asleep. you smiled at the sight, before pausing it, and picking her up to carry to the bedroom. once you had gotten her settled, you laid down on the bed, and fell asleep next to her, forgetting about the cookies.
꧁♡︎♡︎♡︎♡︎꧂
by the time you two woke up, it was around midnight, and you decided to have a gingerbread house contest.
you grabbed all the candy in the house, and quickly whipped up some royal icing to decorate the houses while amber divided the pieces. you each got the stuff for one house, two gingerbread men, some of every candy, and some different colored icing.
“ok, we get an hour and a half to put these together and decorate them, you ready?” you asked, once everything had been set up.
“yep! ready!”
“ok, timers set!”
you didn’t know what she was planning on doing for hers, but you had a plan for your house. you were gonna make the house look like you two’s, and decorate the gingerbread men to look like you and amber. you only hoped you gave yourself enough time to do all that.
after you had put the base of the house together, you got to work decorating the outside of it. you got every detail, from the small stone path leading to the porch, to the little snowman you two had just made together. once you were done with that, you had about half an hour left to decorate the gingerbread men.
you painted the brown hair and red clothes on your gingerbread man, then put two small gumdrops on it’s head for her signature headband. after that, you got the stuff for the you gingerbread man and continued decorating it. as soon as you put the final details on your house, the timer went off.
as you looked at each other’s houses, you realized that you two had had the same idea, and you both burst out laughing, before deciding it was a tie, and putting them on the coffee table to eat while you watched more movies. you had forgotten to put up the blankets and pillows, so you made a little mini fort from them, and grabbed your laptop from the bedroom to watch the movies on.
as you two settled down in the little nest-like space you made, you decided you liked being snowed in, as long as it was with amber.

“Seonghwa-hyung’s gonna be so mad,” Yunho giggled as he looked at Yoori.
Said girl, turned to him with wide eyes. “What? Why?” She then scrunched up her nose and let out what the boys called a kitten sneeze (Yoori hated sneezing out loud.) Yunho giggled more, offering her a goofy smile when she looked at him.
“Do you really need me to point out the cloud of flour that just made you sneeze?” he asked, pointing at the now settling powder. Yoori looked around and saw that he was right. Seonghwa was going to be mad.
The flour now settled over an array of trays, pans, bowls, utensils, and ingredients. Yoori had wanted to try to bake Studio Ghibli macaroons, since they were going to have a marathon of the movies. They had voted on three; Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and Yoori’s favorite, Ponyo.
Looking at the mess one would think that they failed. (Nope.) Yoori may be a chaotic baker, but she was a superb one. The process was never important with her, it was the finishing product, which right now were perfect little Totoros, Chibi-Totoros, and Soot Sprites.
“He’s not home yet, so quickly, start cleaning. I’ll wrap these up and then help,” Yoori told the older.
Yunho made a face, but when Yoori pouted. He smiled, shaking his head and began to pick up any trash. Yoori smiled then made quick work to cover the two platters of macaroons. She handled each with care, tongue poked out in concentration.
She looked up, startled as the sound of a camera shutter. Yeosang stood by the kitchen entrance, looking at his phone and smiling.
“New wallpaper,” he chuckled then walked out into the living room.
“Yah! Kang Yeosang!” Yoori shouted. She didn’t care that he took a picture, but if she was going to be his wallpaper, she wanted to make sure she didn’t look stupid. (Though she wasn’t one to talk seeing as she had a Wooyoung meme face for her wallpaper.)
“Yah! Lee Yoori!” he shouted back, mocking her tone. “Don’t make me tell Hyung about the mess you made,” he said, chuckling.
“You evil man!” Yoori shouted back then grumbled.
Yunho placed a finger on her nose, effectively quieting her, eyes following his finger. “Shush. Ignore him.”
Yoori felt something cold where Yunho had touched her. She looked at the tip of her nose, eyes crossing, and saw white frosting. Looking up at the giant quickly, she furrowed her brows together.
“Ya-ah!” she whined, throwing her head back, looking up at Yunho. He smirked down at her, then lifted his right hand. Yoori’s eyes widened when she saw the frosting on it. She made to move, but he grabbed her with his left arm. He held her close and smeared the frosting on her cheek.
Yoori squealed in laughter, fighting her way out of his hold. She frantically waved at Yeosang who popped his head in to see what was going on. “Yeo, please!” she giggled as Yunho reached for more frosting in one of the bowls and then painted more of her face.
Yeosang looked at her with a blank face, arms folded over his chest. “Am I expected to do something?”
Yoori’s jaw dropped, and Yunho took that opportunity to place more frosting on her. She sputtered at the onslaught, tugging her way out of his hold.
“I thought you’d be my white knight now,” Yoori pouted, then without warning went limp in Yunho’s arms. The dancer grunted at the sudden shift in weight. He was holding her up so she wouldn’t drop to the ground.
“Yah, Yoori! Don’t play dead now,” Yunho groaned, trying to stand her up, but she smiled as she kept limp, legs giving out.
“Stop with the frosting,” she offered, head lolling back to look at Yunho.
“Fine,” he conceded. Yunho reached over and grabbed a napkin, holding it in front of her as if to prove that he’d use it.
Yoori nodded then righted herself. She reached for a bit of frosting and quickly spun around to smear it on his face. Yunho yelped, caught off guard. Yoori giggled, then started to place things in the sink to wash.
Walking by Yeosang, Yoori glared, sticking her tongue out. “No macaroons for you,” she said, pointing an accusatory finger at him.
Yeosang’s eyes doubled in size at the realization. “No, wait. Yoo, come on. I was only joking.” Yoori smirked, back to the older. None of the boys could resist her baking. She often used it to get her way.
“Yoo?” Yunho asked, almost scared.
“I got you back. Not as good, but good enough. So you’re fine,” Yoori turned to him and winked. She giggled as he let out a sigh in relief then stuck his tongue out at Yeosang.
“Yoori? Come on, I’m your boyfriend,” Yeosang walked over to her, pouting.
That pout wasn’t going to work on her. “Why didn’t you use the boyfriend card, when I needed you, huh?” Yoori asked, hands on her hips, sending him a playful glare. Yunho snickered, wiping down the table and counters.
“Uh, I-” Yeosang started off, but stopped.
Yoori squeaked when he leaned in and placed a quick peck on her lips. “Forgiven?” he asked, smiling sheepishly.
“Oh come on!” Yunho groaned, covering his eyes with the rag he was holding.
“I-” Yoori began, but trailed off. She gave a tiny nod.
“Good,” Yeosang smiled, then gently pushed her out of the way. She watched as he silently began to wash the dishes. “You dry?” he asked her.
Yoori nodded, finally shaking off her stupor. That was their first kiss. Granted it was a quick, barely there peck, but it was the first time their lips met like that. She tried to fight off the stupid grin that made it’s way onto her face. One peak at Yeosang and Yoori could see him fighting off his own smile.
“Okay, well I’m done here,” Yunho said, rolling his eyes. He placed the dirty rag with the other ones in the corner that were to be washed. As Yunho walked out, he made eye contact with Yoori, holding his fingers to his thumb on both hands then bringing them together. He made a kissy face at her, and Yoori wasted no time in flipping him off.
Yunho cackled as he walked down the hall. “Hyung’s home!” he then yelled out a few seconds later.
Yoori looked at the still somewhat messy kitchen then yelled, “Oppa, I can explain!” Yeosang chuckled next to her, then dashed out of the kitchen just as Seonghwa walked in.
“Oh, Beanie.”
Yoori gave a sheepish smile, shrugging. “They taste and look good though.”
“I’m sure they do.” Seonghwa smiled softly, shaking his head.

The Shark and the Surfer Chapter 2: The Aft-ermath
Archive of Our Own link
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the Chlolix tags on AO3...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alix noticed it was getting dark, so she swam home as fast as she could and made it to her family’s undersea cave, where her father, Alim, was waiting for her.
“Alix, are you alright? Do you have any parasites on you?” Alim said as he swam around his daughter. He was part pilot fish, so he had a habit of worrying about his shark daughter (who took more after her great white birth mother) and making sure there weren’t any remoras mooching off her.
Alix groaned and pushed her father aside. “Daaaaaaad! I’m not a pup anymore!” She said a little more whiny than she intended. “I just ran into some traffic on my way home, that’s all. Can we eat now?”
Alim nodded and swam over to the dining room with Alix, where his other son, Jalil, was waiting at the table with the prepared food. Well, except for Alix’s plate. Alix took her squid raw.
So while Alix started digging into her squid, she talked about her day with her family, leaving out who she helped today. It was pretty standard stuff, like how Alim mentioned his archeology team at the museum had found evidence of a possible missing link between mermaids and their selkie ancestors or how Jalil had found some more human treasures like a stretchy torture device made of six rings one of his turtle friends gave him.
As Alix washed her squid down with the ink of another, she realized that her brother had some knowledge about humans. “Hey, Jalil? Dad? What exactly do you guys know about humans?” She asked, causing both of them to freeze in place.
“Wh-Why are you asking that? What happened?” Alim asked, worried his daughter’s curiosity (or appetite) would get the better of her.
“Nothing happened! I-I-I-I just wanted to… learn more about them, that’s all. What’s wrong with that?” Alix worried she had said too much.
Alim put a hand on Alix’s shoulder. “Alix, humans are too dangerous. We know nothing about them except that they come from beyond the sea.”
“Well, that, and they can’t live underwater, so they create huge masses of land just to invade our territory and steal our belongings. Thankfully, we got some of their own treasures they just threw away, like this magic box with some humans trapped inside” Jalil chimed in as he took out a blue rectangular object with the label “Canon” on the side.
“Maybe we just need to learn more about humans.” Alix suggested, earning a glare from her father.
“The surface world is inhospitable to our kind, and you could die if you went up there.” Alix flinched in response to Alim’s statement, as she remembered how hard it was for her to simply go a few feet on the surface away from the water. It made Alix wonder how she could ever learn more about the human she saved if she couldn’t get farther than the beach.
“Can I just… Can I go to my room? I want to be alone right now.” Alix mumbled.
“You may, just no thinking about humans.” Alim said as he watched Alix swim away to her room in the cave.
Alix laid down on her bed and thought about the day’s events. She didn’t really get to know the human, but she was still curious about her. Maybe she could try and see if the human was exploring the ocean tomorrow and possibly see her again. But what if that was too much? What if it was a trap? Alix really needed to talk to someone about this the next day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chloe walked back to her place, still thinking about her broken surfboard and what could have saved her. She was really worried about how she would explain what happened to her family. They were already nervous about her hobby as a surfing influencer on social media, so finding out their daughter hit a rock and almost bled out at sea and then came back with a bite taken out of her surfboard would cause them to freak out and make sure she couldn’t even go for a dip in the kiddie pool at the resort they owned. Granted, Chloe’s parents always seemed to be busy with something these days, with her mother designing clothes in Paris like a bikini with glitter and her father running one of the most expensive beach resorts in Saint-Tropez, but Chloe was sure at least one of them would show concern for her safety.
Chloe snuck back into her room where her sister Zoe was hanging out. “Hey, you’re back late. What happened?” She asked, making Chloe sigh.
“Please don’t tell Mom and Dad, but I kind of had a little wipeout.” Chloe showed Zoe the seaweed wrapping around her wetsuit.
Zoe gasped in horror. “Oh my God, are you okay?” She pressed her hand against the seaweed-covered area, causing Chloe to wince a little.
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine. It was only a little bleeding, and it’s mostly stopped.” Chloe replied while unwrapping the seaweed, exposing a minor laceration against her side that thankfully wasn’t too deep and could easily be treated at home. She grumbled a little at seeing a tear in one of her favorite wetsuits.
“You need to let me treat that.” Zoe helped Chloe out of her wetsuit, ignoring her sister’s protests. There were times where it seemed like Zoe was more of a parent to Chloe despite them both being around the same age. She took Chloe to the private bathroom in their room and sat her down on the toilet before taking out a first aid kit.
Zoe got out a washcloth and ran it under some cold water. “So how did it happen this time?” She asked while Chloe let her sister clean the area around the wound.
“It’s hard to say. I remember scratching myself on a rock and bleeding a little bit, but then...”
“Then what?” Zoe asked, taking out some antiseptic cream to apply to the cut.
Chloe was at a loss for words for describing what happened next. “You’d think it’s weird.”
“Says the girl whose wound I’m currently cleaning while she sits on the toilet wearing nothing but a bikini.” Zoe retorted with an argument that Chloe didn’t really have a rebuttal towards.
Chloe figured she should just come out and say it, no matter how weird it sounded. “I think I was saved by a mermaid.” She blurted out.
Zoe stared at Chloe like she had a colony of bees in her hair. “A mermaid? Seriously?"
“That's what I saw!” Chloe protested. “I think she helped me get back to the shore and then I saw her jumping back into the water.”
Zoe scoffed in response as she took out the gauze and some bandages. “Oh, okay then. What kind of mermaid was it? Are we talking Ariel mermaid, Ponyo mermaid, or H2O: Just Add Water mermaid?” She asked sarcastically.
“Actually, I think she was a shark mermaid or something like that.” Chloe said, recalling the features of her mysterious savior.
“You were saved… by a shark mermaid?” Zoe asked incredulously.
“I don’t know! I want to learn more about her!” Chloe raised her arms for Zoe to apply the gauze to her wound and bandage it up. “Come on, don’t you want to at least see if this is real and not something I hallucinated?”
Zoe sighed. “Chloe, maybe take a day or two to rest before going back into the ocean again.” She started to put away the first aid kid. “Either that, or ask someone about mermaids or something like that.”
Chloe got up and changed into something comfortable for the night, thinking about maybe talking to a friend of hers tomorrow
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“YOU SAW A HUMAN?!”
“Shh! I don’t want the entire ocean to know!” Alix hissed to shut up Alya.
“Then why are you telling us in the first place? This is huge!” Alya couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“And you saved her just like a prince saving a princess. It’s so romantic!” Rose chimed in with the same cheery view of everything she heard about.
“I didn’t mean it like that! She needed help, so I helped her.” Alix retorted. “I mean yeah, I guess she was kinda pretty, but that’s not the point here! I want some advice on how to approach this.”
“I mean, if you want to see her again, why not just drag her underwater?” Juleka asked bluntly.
“Juleka, she can’t breathe underwater!” Alix snapped.
“Why don’t you ask Master Fu? Maybe he knows.” Mylene suggested. “What does he know about humans, Marinette?” She asked her friend who was currently working as a healing apprentice for Master Fu.
“Uh, he hasn’t really told me much.” Marinette replied, making Alix sigh.
“And my family isn’t much help either.” She said as she ran her hands through her head in frustration. “I really don’t know what to do here! I really want to learn more about this human. I want to know more about the human world in general and their awful-tasting fish.” The others looked at Alix in confusion after they heard that last bit.
“Okay, here’s an idea: Swim up to the shore and then see if the human comes back or not. If she actually saw you, she’ll obviously want to investigate like you do.” Marinette suggested.
Alix thought about what Marinette said for a moment. “You know what? You’re right. Maybe she’s looking for me right now!” And with that, Alix dashed off, leaving a trail of bubbles in her wake as her friends tried to get her to stop.
Alix remembered where she went to the surface yesterday and swam to a small rock formation where she surfaced and looked up to see if the same human saw her, making sure to conceal her shark half just in case.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“You saw a mermaid?”
“Yeah, I get it’s ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. Can you just hear me out?” Chloe asked Sabrina, fully aware of how weird her question was.
“You know when I signed up to be a lifeguard, I wasn’t trained to look for mermaids.” Sabrina said as she got out of her lifeguard’s chair and switched out with another lifeguard so she could talk to Chloe more while the two walked down the beach.
“Well what about sharks? I think the mermaid was part shark.”
Sabrina sighed. “You of all people should know shark sightings are rare here, and even then, they rarely attack humans unless they’re confused.”
“Well I think this shark is different.” Chloe said, fully aware of how weird her statement was.
“I guess I’ll tell the other lifeguards to watch out for any shark people.” Sabrina said before leaving.
Chloe sighed. She knew this was a ridiculous story nobody would believe. She was going to walk back, but then she saw a flash of pink hair by the rocks. Chloe carefully walked across some of the rocks that weren’t submerged in the water until she was face to face with the pink haired girl, who was looking nervously at her.
“Uh… hi. Do you remember me?” The girl asked nervously, giving a toothy grin with her sharp teeth.
“I… I think I do. This is kind of a strange question, but are you a...” Chloe was going to ask, but her curiosity got the better of her and looked over the rocks and saw a shark fin on the girl’s back. “Nevermind.”
Chloe was now 100% sure she was saved by a mermaid yesterday, and was now face to face with the same mermaid again.

New Amsterdam Chapter 60
Matt felt slightly ill at the description of the stuff Peter had put up with (you don’t understand, I signed with his mother and his mother was the sweetest, most wonderful person you could ever meet) from his landlord. Things like his utilities suddenly being separate from his rent, when they were all included before. Things like calling for someone to fix his heater, being told if he wasn’t there to let the maintenance guy in it wouldn't get fixed, and then not sending the maintenance guy for three days—when it was negative ten degrees Fahrenheit outside. Things like the electricity in his apartment being “randomly” cut off—shortly before it was time for him to pay his rent. Then this latest stunt—changing the date of rent collection with two day’s notice.
He was also surprised at Peter’s attitude about it. As far as he could tell, the young man thought the shitty behavior he was experiencing was just stuff that happened to him, and Matt would desperately like to know why he thought that way. He was also shocked that Peter—Peter actually seemed to like and trust Deadpool. And Deadpool showed a side around Peter that Matt suspected no one else got to see; he was gentle and loving. And teasing, Matt recalled about the ball.
It was—odd, to say the least. Deadpool was explosion, noise and chaos. He was still those things around Peter but—they were softer, muted somehow. And Matt could not for the life of him figure out how the unassuming young man in front of him had possibly gotten that reaction out of Deadpool.
Matt could also tell that the feelings were mutual. Peter’s heartbeat slowed and his breathing evened out when Deadpool touched him. Even when he was scolding Deadpool his heartbeat had that slow, loving pattern. He relaxed around the murderous mercenary—and had even, at one point, called the man a hero. Which Deadpool, with a modesty that Matt couldn't quite credit even though he’d heard it with his own ears, had denied.
There was also something disturbingly familiar about the young man that Matt couldn't place, like a nostalgic taste on his tongue he couldn't quite recognize. He tried to set the sensation aside as he concentrated on the conversation and made mental notes even as he (with Peter’s permission) recorded it to go over it again later (with his law partner this time). He would bring the full force of the law down on the man—and if that didn’t work, if he managed to squeak away through a legal loophole somehow, well—Daredevil could pay him a visit.
At the end of the conversation, Matt turned off the recording device (an old cassette player—not as convenient as digital, but harder to hack and, more importantly, had grooves on the different buttons in shapes designed to tell what those buttons were for) and put it in his bag. “Thank you, Mr. Parker,” Matt said, having learned the young man’s full name over the course of the gentle interrogation—and over the dinner where Wade flirted shamelessly with his boyfriend and his boyfriend clumsily flirted back.
The fact that Deadpool, the same manic man that had literally blown himself up to take out a drug cartel dabbling in human trafficking, had a boyfriend that loved him was just a little mind-blowing. And a little thought provoking. One of the things that had happened when they were eating was Wade and Peter sitting, back to back, on the couch. After a moment Matt realized why—Wade didn’t want to show his skin (even Matt knew that the merc was sensitive about it)—and Peter respected that. They were an oddly good match. An oddly endearing match.
Matt hoped to Hell that they managed to find and stop whomever put the hit out on Peter, because if anything happened to that young man Deadpool would raze the city to the ground.
After dinner Deadpool gave Peter a quick hug and and cuddle and said he was going to walk Matt home; make sure he got home safely. Matt almost said something—until he realized that Deadpool was simply reinforcing the helpless persona that Matt wore as his civilian disguise. He didn’t believe that Deadpool was really going to walk him home—and was surprised when the guy stopped at a taco truck and ordered a huge amount of food.
“Did you not get enough to eat?” asked Matt.
“Of course I did,” Deadpool said as he went to pay the vendor—who waved it off.
“No payments from you, Senor Pool,” the man said with a heavy accent. “If not for you, who knows what happen to my sister, eh?”
“Just a masked madman doing my duty to protect the city!” Deadpool replied in the same voice he’d used before jumping off the catwalk above the gang.
They walked a little ways away, the smell of the food hanging around them before Matt made himself ask, “What is the food for?”
“A summoning spell,” said Deadpool.
Matt stopped walking. He could tell, from the tone of voice and steady heartbeat, that Deadpool was absolutely serious. “This I have got to see,” he said firmly. Deadpool started laughing and Matt half-heartedly smacked the merc with his cane. “Come on,” he said as he ducked into an alley and climbed up the side of the building—only to be overtaken by Wade who used a retractable grappling hook to get to the top. “All right,” said Matt when they were at the roof. “What are you doing?”
“I told you,” said Deadpool as the paper bag around the Mexican food crinkled several times. “I’m summoning!”
“You could try calling,” a dry voice announced behind them. Matt whirled, dropping into defensive stance. There were only two people that could come upon him unannounced like that—and both of them had tried to kill him. “Cute,” said the voice.
The feminine voice. The young, familiar feminine voice. Matt slowly pulled himself out of his stance as he listened for something from the girl’s direction. Then, realization dawned. “How’s Dora?” he asked as he (partially) relaxed.
“Ponyo!”
“Dora says ‘hi’,” the girl responded.
“I didn’t call, because you never gave me your name.”
“I didn’t?” A pause. “I didn’t. Well, I can’t, but I’m going by Angel for now.” Matt heard the rustle of wings. “What did you want me for, Deadpool?” There was the crinkling sound of the bag being opened and the familiar sounds of mastication as the girl began to eat.
“Can you cook?”
“Yeah, Dad and Papa made sure I could.” The sound of fingers being licked as something moved along the girl’s chest with an odd sound—like it was rasping over metal? “I can do pancakes, most Mexican and Italian—don’t ask me to do tamales, they never come out right for some reason, but yeah. I can cook.” More chewing noises.
“Great! I want you to watch over Peter!”
“That might be a good idea,” Matt admitted. “The young man made soup explode.”
A pause. “Really?” the girl asked. She sounded a cross between impressed and horrified.
“Really,” confirmed Deadpool.
“Huh.” More chewing. A swallow. Then, “I can do it, but it won’t be free.”
“I figured that. Whatcha need, Baby Girl?”
Matt, expecting a cash amount, was mildly surprised when the girl said, “A new sketchbook and colored pencils.”
“Right. One drawing pad and crayons.”
“Pencils.”
“What’s wrong with crayons?”
A rustle of feathers in what Matt assumed was the winged girl’s version of a shrug. “Nothing’s wrong with crayons. I use pencils.”
“Deal.”
“Deal. So, what brings you out to this negotiation? Are you here to draw up an official contract?” The girl sounded curious, as opposed to offended.
Matt felt a slight chill. The girl knew he was a lawyer. How? He hadn’t told her what he did, he hadn’t had much of a conversation with her before at all. She was also, he knew from the theater incident, aware of Daredevil to the point that she even knew his turf of protection. He knew better than to ask, however. “Deadpool’s boyfriend has a landlord that is pulling some illegal stunts, and he’s hired me to fix it—legally,” he added as he calmly explained.
He sensed the girl nod. “Do you want me to read the contract to you?” she asked. “I speak legalese, one of my uncles made sure I could.”
“Why would your uncle make sure you could?” asked Matt with curiosity.
Both the girl and Deadpool burst out laughing. After a full, solid minute of laughter the girl gasped and sighed. “Oh! Tell you what,” and Matt could tell from the tone that she was grinning, “if you can guess who I am, I’ll tell you everything I know.” Deadpool, amazingly, managed to laugh harder and Matt heard his body hit the roof as he doubled over with mirth.
The girl simply took another bite of food, and began to chew.

waste it on me | part 13 (text below images)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bold: yn
italicized: miya
[normal text]: description
~facetime conversation~
i can’t believe you two were able to keep this secret!! when did he ask you out? [you questioned, getting comfortable on your pillow]
uhh, he didn’t really ask me out-- [miya said sheepishly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, fiddling with her stuffed cat]
YOU ASKED HIM OUT?? [you yelled in surprise, it wasn’t like miya to be this bold]
no [she laughs], we kinda just went for it
you just went for it? how does that happen
well we bumped into each other when i was getting my sister and i drinks at starbucks, and then we ended up staying there just talking for an hour-- and it wasn’t like normal talking! well.. we were talking normally to each other, but like.. not like we usually do you know? like he got shy and told me i looked pretty that day and i turned red and then he made fun of me-- but his ears were red! so he was shy too, so i started making fun of him and then we just laughed it off and then we left and went on a little date. it was pretty cute [she explained with her hands, fiddling with her fingers as she ended her little story]
what happened to miyeon’s drink [you ask with confusion, your eyebrows knitting together]
oh about that... taehyung drank it and so in the middle of our date we went through drive thru and got her a new drink [she scratches her head]
where’d you guys go for your date?
we went to a karaoke room, it was so much fun, i can barely sing, but his voice. ugh. he serenaded me with my favorite songs, listening to them now is so different and makes me feel all warm inside [she covers her face with her hands]
ugh you two are so cute, i’m so happy for you two. but now i’m an official third wheel, fuuun [you shake your hands in a sarcastic way]
what do you mean! no way, how about you? what happened with jungkook?
oh akferjknjr it was... normal surprisingly. the movie was about to start so then the lights started going down right? then a black figure ran up the stairs and was about to sit next to me and when i looked up it was him and he looked so scared and he tried going to a different seat, but it was the last seat left so i told him to sit down. he hesitated at first but then he eventually sat down and i offered him popcorn [you nod your head]
well he’s warming up to you, that’s good! did you two talk after that?
umm hello? the movie started, why would i talk, that’s rude!
okay okay, then when did you two talk?
after the movie. i was going on an on about how i loved ponyo so much and that i was craving noodles and ham after watching that one scene, you know that scene right?
yes, of course i know that scene [she slightly rolls her eyes, nodding her head]
well, i wasn’t really talking to anyone in particular, just looking straight ahead, and namjoon wasn’t even paying attention to me! he was just on his phone so jungkook responded to me instead
aww what’d he say?
“so nothing changed huh? still your favorite?” I SCREAMED-- internally of course.
aww he remembers?? [she covers her mouth]
i guess so~ then we just started talking and i was telling him if he’d like to go get noodles sometimes, as friends you know? and he said yes. i kinda screamed internally again [you smirked a little]
omg yay!!! that’s great news [miya couldn’t help but smile so big]
it is, i didn’t get his number though... it slipped my mind completely [you pout]
why not ask namjoon? he can ask yoongi, i’m sure he’ll give it to you
true, okay, i’ll text him later [you look off to the side]
did anything else happen?
we got kicked out... of the room, we didn’t notice how much time went by because we were just talking about random things.
like what?
well it was still about the movie, i don’t know why, but the image of ponyo transforming back into a little girl popped into my head and i couldn’t stop laughing, it was embarrassing... he was so confused and he was like ‘what’ and i was like nothing but i coULDN’T STOP LAUGHING IT WAS SO EMBARRASSING [you squished your face in embarrassment]
did you explain it to him at least??
well yeah, but throughout my explanation i still couldn’t stop laughing so i had to show him a picture.
wait is that the picture of jungkook that you showed us?
yeah! that was when he was looking at the picture i was talking about and he couldn’t stop laughing afterwards [you couldn’t help but smile, remembering how cute he looked when he was laughing, the first time in 10 years that you saw that bunny smile again]
wait wait wait wait is it when she looked like a chicken?? [she says in realization]
YES OMG ISN’T IT HILARIOUS
YES I LOVED THAT, SHE LOOKED LIKE THIS [she frowned, her mouth forming the perfect upside down ‘u’]
YES [you laughed]
wait hold on... where was namjoon throughout all this? [miya asks, remembering that he’s who she came with in the first place]
on his phone right next to me, i saw him roll his eyes when i asked jungkook about the noodle thing and he mouthed ‘third wheel’ at me [you say as you scratch the back of your neck]
wow we really need to get him someone
i don’t know anyone else though, do you?
no, no i don’t [miya thinks]
aww man, i don’t want him to be lonely
date him then
oh no, no, no [your eyes grew wide and shaking your head no]
he’s a great guy, he’ll find someone
yeah.. but anyways, i shouldn’t get my hopes up with jungkook, we’re just friends-- almost.. friends
yeah, you like him though, right?
i guess? i mean, i think so, i’m pretty sure i do-- but right now i just want to be friends
okay, well baby steps then
yes, baby steps-- speaking of babies, when are you and tae going to get married so you can have babies? i want to be an aunt soon
hold your horses yn, it’s been three dates, go tell that to my sister [she says with fear in her eyes]
YOU’RE RIGHT, it’s about time those two get married [it just came to you that they’ve been together for more than a decade already]
i know right, they’ve been together longer than i’ve known you-- oop, taehyung is texting me, hold on-- [miya’s camera went on pause as she read tae’s text]
what’d he say?
mmmm... he just told jin, he’s happy, but surprised that none of us told him, especially my sister-- oh-- oh i guess they’re both coming over now [she said with slight panic in her voice, not expecting them to come over this late in the evening]
oH? well, i guess these are the perks of sisters dating brothers.
i guess so
well anyways, you can call me or text me later, i don’t want to bother you and your boyfriend
nOT my boyfriend... yet-- he hasn’t asked
well it’s a given, now go get ready! text me what happens
okay okay, i’ll see you later then
~end~
You sigh, putting your phone down and getting comfortable on your bed, looking up at the ceiling and just thinking.
beep beep
You grab your phone, looking at the text you just received, frowning at the text you just got from an unknown number. Still, you replied, getting a response almost instantly, making your eyes widen.

Epilogue
“Well, what’s on your mind?” asked Ariel.
“I don’t know,” replied Ponyo. “It’s just that I feel like I need to do something, but I don’t know what.”
Ariel smiled remembering her own first few years on land.
“Once my mom sold the movie rights we could move here. That’s all great, and I’m so lucky to have you of all people living next door, but, you know sometimes I wonder…”
“You wonder if you made the right choice?” said Ariel. “You wonder what it would have been like if you had stayed in the sea?”
“Well, kinda. I mean I love my family, they’ve done so much for me, but sometimes…”
Ariel smiled.
“I mean I was only two. What parent lets a two year old make that decision?”
“When was the last time you saw the sea?”
“It must be at least ten years now. Once my dad got that desk job here he never wanted to go back.”
“Well then” said Ariel, “it’s time you went. Take my car.”
“Really?”
“Of course. I’m always happy to help a friend.”
Half hour later Ponyo parked in a small lot next to the beach. She got out and walked out onto the stone jetty peering into tide pools, and watching the waves splashing over the rocks. The smell of the sea air was invigorating.
“This feels like I’ve been holding my breath and I now can finally exhale.”
“Ponyo.”
At first she wasn’t sure she had heard it right.
“Ponyo you’re back.”
Ponyo looked around just as several huge red and black fish burst out of the water.
Ponyo screamed in surprise.
The fish came around and stopped close to where Ponyo stood.
“I’m sorry Ponyo, but we were so happy to see you.”
Ponyo stood in shock for a moment.“Scaphites? Barlock? Is that you?”
“Who else?”
“But it’s been so long, how did you know me?”
“We’d never forget our best friend Ponyo. Hey why don’t you come for a swim, the water’s warm.”
“Oh I don’t know…”
Scaphites grabbed Ponyo’s hand with his mouth and the next thing she knew she was off her feet. The fish took turns keeping her above the surface, tossing her from one back to another.
“We mustn’t let you get those clothes wet,” said Barlock laughing. Though between the wet fish scales and the splashing water she was quickly soaked to the skin. They played for some time before pausing to catch their breath.
Ponyo looked at her two old friends and smiled. Now she knew what she had been missing.
Ponyo smiled and quietly said, “Let’s go home.”
The next day Ariel found her car parked in the little turnout next to the beach. Ponyo was nowhere to be seen.“Goodbye friend,” she said to herself. “I almost made the same choice myself once.”
Ariel looked over to where her daughter was playing in the sand.
“But I guess I had a better reason to stay.”

Umm... I don’t know if you do request but I was wondering if maybe you could do a YamaguchixReader short fluffy fic? Like only if you want to obviously. Also I really like your post and HQ things! ❤️
Hello, BB! And I would love to write for Yamaguchi! He's so sweet 🤗
I don't have a title :}
Pairing: Yamaguchi x gn!reader
Warning: My typographical and grammatical errors. Also, mentions of Ponyo HAHAHAH (I love Ponyo's mother and father 🥺)
"Alright, which movie to watch next?" You asked as your head rested on Yamaguchi's shoulders while watching the laptop flashing the credits on screen.
Yamaguchi giggled slightly as he reached for the top of your head, "What do you want to watch?" He hummed as he melted on his own hoodie.
"Hmmm..." You muttered as you scanned through the list of Ghibli Movies on Yamaguchi's account, "Ponyo?" You asked.
"Is that the one with the frog princess?" Yamaguchi asked as his other hand reached for yours, eager to fidget on them.
You sat straight and shot Yamaguchi a glance, an offended one specifically. Your hand flying to your chest as you heaved a dramatic gasp, "She's a fish, Yamaguchi-kun," you corrected.
Yamaguchi's eyes widened before he chuckled sheepishly, "I'm sorry. I didn't know. But let's watch that then," he told you before clicking Ponyo.
The intro started playing, making you both fall silent. But this does not stop Yamaguchi's mouth from giving a random comment, though.
"I just want you to know you remind me of Ponyo's mother," he said while slightly nudging you by shaking his shoulder.
This made you sit straight, a playful look on your face as you nudge him back, "You remind me of Ponyo's father then."
Yamaguchi raised his brows, "What? I'm that tensed?" He asked, frowning.
You cupped his cheeks, "No. Silly. 'Cause you're her husband!"
"Oh," he said, face leaning on your hands. His freckled cheeks slightly red as he look up to you, "I guess I want to be her dad then."
"Yes, yes," you gave him a peck on the cheek, sending you two to another episode of profuse blushing.
"Y/N-chan, you'd be so beautiful in a white dress, plus with shiny jewelries? I bet you're going to be way more beautiful than Ponyo's mother. She wouldn't stand a-"
"Oh, stop it you-" you pushed Yamaguchi with all your might, the only solution your brain was able to come up with as you didn't want Yamaguchi to see your flushed face.
But you didn't expect him to be not on his guard, though, your push leading him to fall out of his bed.
"oH MY GOD, YAMAGUCHI!"

Do you take requests, cause I want to see a fanfic of a Dodo x Remi fanfic please!
Oh, sure!☺ Been a while since I wrote something actually. I can definitely do that!
>----------------------------------<
Remi was always proud of Sayu and her legacy. Sayu... Sayu is his magnanimous. He loves his work and his team's work with all he has... Howeverrrr... In the aftermath of the Rock Revolution-courtesy of B2J- more and more genres have been on the market.
Dispite still topping the charts... There was a notable decrease in giggs... Leaving more free-time for the Sayu Crew. And... Remi wasn't sure how to feel about it... While before he would spend his days brainstorming new ideas and designs for the next concert they had. But now... Now there were just days when they didn't have to prepare every day...
Now here were days when all Remi could think of doing is sitting in his room just doodling and eating snacks until he got called out for dinner... It was quiet. Too quiet for him... And he wanted things normal again... Usually on days like that, the others were out doing their own thing... Remi was never all that sure what, but it was something.
Soooo where suddenly his bedroom door opens up and he sees someone standing in the doorway, he's kinda freaked out. Luckily though, his frightened squeak was met with a familiar chuckle. "Calm down dude. It's only me..." His tall blue friend smiled calmly and walked closer to Remi and his desk. Remi sighed lightly.
"Just you... Jeez Dodo, at least... I-I dunno, knock or something!" Remi sighed and popped a gummie snack into his mouth. Dodo just chuckled. "Heh, sorry Remi. Guess I just wasn't thinking... Say, what cha drawing?" He asked and leaned over Remi's shoulder to get a look at his art tablet. "Is it Sayu?" "Mm-" Remi's cheeks got a little tinted and he gently nudged the taller boy away.
"Yeah... It is... Just something to pass the time ya know..?" Dodo smiled and pulled up a bean bag chair. "Cool. Your art is super pretty." "Mm.... Thanks..... Hey, Dodo?" Remi set his pen down and turned to looked at him. "W... Why are you still here? You... Normally aren't around the apartment this time of day..." He asked and rubbed the back of his neck. Dodo just shrugged.
"Eh. I usually hang around in Metro district, buuut they're preparing for a big 1010 show tomorrow night soooo..." "Ah..." Remi mumbled and knodded. "So that's what you do all day..." "Yea... And you Remi?" Dodo smiled and looked up to him. "I've hardly seen you leave recently... I'm kinda... Kinda worried actually... You doing ok?" "H-huh?" Remi was... Slightly surprised.
"W-worried?.. Mm... I-I'm fine dude- Really! Just... Guess I... I really don't know what else... What else I can do..." He murmured and glanced away, rubbing the back of his neck. Dodo knodded. "Still kinda adjusting huh?.. Hey- How about this." He said and stood up. "You and I can go hang out. Go to a cafe, go shopping, whatever you want! Just to get out of the house... What do you say?" Dodo smiled and extended a hand to Remi.
Remi felt his cheeks heat up a little, but slowly... He went and took his hand. "A..... Alright... Let's... Let's go..." Dodo smiled and lead the way. "That's the spirit. C'mon, I know a bubble tea place over by Cast-Tech. I think you'll like it." He kept talking for a little, menwhile Remi looked down to their hands... It was a warm and pleasant feeling. Although... Hard to tell if it came from their hands... Or just Remi's chest. Either way... Remi smiled and gently squeezed Dodo's hand as they kept walking.
>----------------------------------<
A couple hours later, sun was setting and the duo were returning home with shopping bags in arms. It had been a pretty good day today. Went to a cafe, walked around the city, and did some light shopping for snacks and drinks. It was nice for Remi... It really had been a while since he'd gone out and done something like this... And he's honestly really glad Dodo brought him out to do so.
Once home, Dodo went and started putting stuff away in the kitchen area while Remi plopped himself on the couch. "Mm.... H-hey Dodo... You wanna watch a movie or something?" "Hm?" Dodo looked over, slightly surprised. "You... Wanna watch a movie with me?.. I kinda figured you'd just be heading right back to your room when we got back..." He mumbled and walked up to Remi. "Huh? O-oh... Well uh... I-I guess I can j-just-"
Remi attempted to stand, but Dodo put his hands on his shoulders and gently pushed him back down. "Nope." "E-eh-?!" Remi squeaked and blushed faintly. Dodo just chuckled. "We're watching a movie. No going anywhere now." Dodo smiled and gently ruffled his hair. "Pick something out. I'll get snacks." Remi looked up at him his face reddening. After a moment he looked away and adjusted his glasses. "Mm- A.. Alright then- I'll... I'll do just that."
Dodo smiled and walked back to the kitchen for snacks. Remi took a moment, kinda frazzled, took the remote and started looking through movies. While he did so, Dodo would come in and out of the room with treats ; mini kit-kats, meiji apallo, ramune candies, hello panda, just the works. Remi soon decided on Ponyo, then looked down at the coffee table. "W-wow!... Uh... L-looks like we're set..."
"Noooot yet my friend." Dodo smiled and came back with some drink bottles. Remi looked at them for a moment, taking a second before realizing what they were. When he did, his eyes lit up. "Mogu mogu!" He smiled. "Aww man! I thought Tila drank the last one!" "Oh, she did." Dodo said. "Buuut since it's a favorite of yours, I snagged a couple for you." Remi smiled and took one. "Lychee flavored too? Aw man, you're the best Dodo!"
"Eh. I try..." Dodo smiled and sat beside Remi. "Anyway... You got the movie?" "Yep yep!" Remi grinned and started movie. "It's Ponyo!" "Ah. A Ghibly movie then... You really like these hm?" "Of course!" Remi smiled brightly. "I love everything about Ghibly movies! The stories, the characters, the ART! Oh I could go on forever about how much I love the art alone~"... And go on forever he did. Or, it felt like it at least. It wasn't until the movie was half way through when he finished up talking.
"-Ponyo is just my favorite though- for... Obvious reasons- BUT Totoro is... Definitely my..." Remi looked up to Dodo, only to see him with a glazed over look in his eyes, a small smile, and... Light pink cheeks. He was watching Remi... But didn't look to be listening... "... You ok dude?" He asked, making Dodo squeak, coming back to reality. "O-oh, uh... Sorry dude..." He chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. "Mm... Is Something the matter? You..."
Dodo just looked at him, then chuckled. "Don't worry Remi. You just... Distracted me." He smiled and ruffled Remi's hair. Remi was... A tad confused. "I... Distracted y-you...?" "Well... Yeah." Dodo smiled and gently cupped his cheek. "Mm... Whenever... Whenever you start talking about art stuff... You always get a lil glint in your eyes... And it's honestly the most adoroble thing ever..." He blushed and chuckled
Remi went red and started stuttering. "Eh?.. I-I... You... Y-you... Th..." Dodo listened, then chuckled. "Mm... Why wouldn't I?" He asked and gently hugged him. "Who wouldn't find you adorable? You're so small with just the sweetest smile..." He gently cupped Remi's cheeks. The two boys were... Rather close at the moment... "U-um..." Remi squeaked out, bright red. Dodo just looked at him and smiled. "Mm... See what I told you?" He said and slowly leaned closer.
Their noses close to touching... Remi could hear his heart pound in his chest and his face was burning up. "You're... Adorable..." Dodo said, looking at the shorter boy. His cheeks a lovely color of pink... The two slowly came closer and closer... Until...
"Hey guys!" The door slammed open as Tila returned home. "GHA-" Remi squeaked, startled, and fell backwards off the couch with a thud. "O-ow..." "Ngh- R-Remi!" Dodo squeaked. "Hey guys." Tila set her bag at the doorway and walked up to the livingroom. "Hm? Woah... You ok? You guys look startled... And... Red. Hey are you both sick?" "Mm- u-uh..." Remi was still bright red and nervous. "Um... U-uhh.... I... Mm!" He squeaked and stood up, nervously running to his room and slamming his door.
"R-Remi! Wait-... Damit!" Dodo groaned and slapped a hand on his face. "Remi..." "... Well..." Tila rubbed her neck. "That was... Weird... Whaaat was-" "Tila, hush... Just hush..." He sighed and walked off. Remi menwhile sat on his bedroom floor, fanning his face with his hands. "O-oh god. Did... Did that just... Happen? We could've... Gha- damiiiiit!" He squeaked and hid his face in his hands."Mm... J-just calm down just calm down... S-stop thinking for two seconds and just... Calm... Down-" And a knock had come.
"GH-!" Remi jolted away from the door. "S-sorry-" Dodo spoke from the other side. "I'm sorry... Didn't mean to scare you..." "... Mm...." Remi sighedand leaned against the door. "I-it's ok dude... I... I just need a minuet to calm down. I... I'm feeling a little frazzled so..." Dodo sighed and knodded. "Alright alright, I get it... Well... Sofa will probably be back soon too and... Then we can order dinner... Want me to call you then?" "Mm... Y-yeah..." Remi murmured and smiled faintly. "T-thanks..."
"Heh... No worries Remi." Dodo said and started walking away, but stoppedin his tracks. "Oh! Nearly forgot!" He smiled and turned back to the door. "Tomorrow, I have somewhere I wanna take you. A cafe on the edge of Akusuka and Natura. I think you'd like it... What do you say?" "Mm? O-oh uh... S-sure! I-I'd love to..." He mumbled and smiled. Dodo chuckled and started walking off. "Great! Well then... See ya at dinner dude." "Mm... Y.. Yeah..." Remi mumbled and smiled.
Once he knew Dodo had gone, Remi went to his bed and laid down with a tired but happy sigh. He put his hands on his cheeks and felt them heat up again. "Mm... W-well... I guess that wasn't too terrible... Frigen Tila." The boy mumbled and hugged a pillow "... W-was he always so... Charming and sweet and stuff..?" Remi mumbled and giggled a bit. "Mm... We were... So so close... Maybe we could've... Mmnmnf-" Remi blushed brighter at the thought and burried his face into thr pillow. "Mm- c-calm down! Mm... I think to muuch...." He groaned and laid down, flustered.. But happy. "Mm... W-well... We still have tomorrows... D-date."

The Moment I Said It
Unspoken Words part 1
Sarah's bedroom is illuminated by the warm yellow glow of the early morning sun. It isn't often she gets to sleep in. She normally has to be up before dawn for whatever assignments she's been given that day but today, she and Jesse get to start their patrol a little later than usual.
A soft knock on Sarah's bedroom door wakes her up. Joel. She lets out a tired sigh, stretching and standing up to open the door. She reaches for the cold metal handle, swinging the door open. Joel chuckles at her appearance. Her hair is messy and tangled and she's still in her pajamas. Sarah shivers, the shorts and tank top not providing much warmth. She wishes she could crawl back under her warm blankets.
"You better have a good reason for waking me up the morning I finally get to sleep in." Sarah yawns, rubbing her eyes with her palms.
"Are pancakes a good reason?" Joel asks, leaning against the doorframe with a grin. Sarah puts a finger on her bottom lip, pretending to think. The answer is obvious.
"I guess." She says with a tired smile. "Is Ellie still here?"
Joel shakes his head. "No, she wanted to get an early start on her patrol with Dina. Jesse's here, though."
"Oh, cool." Sarah says, a little deflated that Ellie's already gone but happy one of her friends is here. Ellie's been more of a sister to Sarah than a best friend since the girls met. You'd think they were actually siblings if you didn't know their beginnings. Sarah's mother passed away while giving birth to her. Her father passed away before she was born, leaving her in Joel's care with nothing but a tiny stuffed lamb she named Gus and memories that will never be made. Sarah sometimes wishes she could've known her parents; wonders what they were like. But she tries not to think about it too much. It's pretty normal for kids to lose their parents nowadays. She can't complain, though. Joel's stepped up and treated her like his own daughter. She'd even tried calling him dad once but he told her not to call him that.
Sarah leans out of the doorway, hanging onto the frame with both hands. "Hey Jesse!" She calls.
"Morning!" Jesse yells from somewhere downstairs. Sarah smiles. Jesse always has this cheerful tone that can brighten anyone's day.
"Alright, scoot. Get dressed. Your boyfriend and I are waiting on you." Joel nudges Sarah's shoulder teasingly.
"He is not my boyfriend." Sarah groans, closing the door in Joel's face.
"Yeah, that's almost exactly what Ellie said about Dina at first, too." Joel says through the door. He can practically feel Sarah's eye roll as he walks back downstairs.
Sarah gets dressed quickly, not wanting to keep the guys waiting longer. She laces up her black steel toed boots and throws one of Joel's old flannels over her tank top before grabbing Gus. She hugs the little sheep for a moment before going downstairs, passing the kitchen and going to the door to put the stuffed animal in her backpack.
"You know, if you didn't carry that sheep around, you'd have more room in your backpack for supplies." Jesse teases, standing beside where Sarah kneels, zipping up her bag.
"You leave Gus alone." Sarah stands up, shoving Jesse back with a playful smile. "He is my child and he goes where I go."
"Yes ma'am." Jesse chuckles, putting his hands up in surrender. Sarah moves to punch his shoulder but Jesse dodges and grabs her fist. "Alright, let's eat. We've got an hour before Maria wants us to head out."
"What route are we doing?" Sarah asks as Jesse pulls her into the dining room. Joel joins the teenagers, walking out of the kitchen with a cup of coffee and sitting in a chair at the end of the table. Sarah sits in the seat diagonal from him. People don't get to eat meals other than dinner at home often, usually grabbing food from the diner before heading off to do their daily activities so it's nice when they get to spend the morning talking amongst themselves and connecting with their families.
"Creek trails." Jesse answers, sitting across from Sarah. "Should be pretty simple, there hasn't been many infected spotted on that route for a while."
"That route is really pretty." Sarah says, taking a bite of her pancakes. "Especially now since it's Spring."
"You know, you could probably pick some wildflowers for your room." Jesse says, shoveling bites of pancake into his mouth. "Replace those dead ones you've had for ages."
"Yeah, that's a good idea." Sarah agrees.
Joel smiles, hearing the two talk about simple things. It almost feels like the world hasn't gone to shit. It almost feels like how things were before the infected; peaceful. He clears his throat, suddenly feeling a bit nervous. "Sarah, I've got somethin' to tell you after patrol if you're not busy."
"Is something wrong?" Sarah asks, looking at him with worried eyes.
"No. Nothin's wrong." Joel assures, putting a hand up to signal her to stay calm. "Just somethin' I gotta tell you."
Sarah nods, hesitant. "Okay." She says, turning her attention back to her plate of half eaten pancakes. She wonders what Joel has to tell her that he can't say right now. Is he dying?!
"It's Dina's turn to pick a movie tomorrow." Jesse says, successfully distracting Sarah from Joel's previous comment. The four friends always have a movie night with popcorn and expired candy every other Friday. It's a way to destress and relax after a long two weeks as well as bond with one another. Dina always picks shitty sci fi movies just to watch the other three cringe and laugh at them.
"Oh no." Sarah chuckles. "Please tell me you hid the sci fi movies."
"Yep." Jesse laughs, the three of them finishing their breakfast. "She'll never find them." Sarah stands up, carrying her plate into the kitchen. Jesse follows, taking her plate out of her hands. She reaches for it but Jesse is a good three inches taller so he holds it up, just out of her reach. He uses his leg to kick her away and sets both of the plates in the sink, turning on the water.
"Hey!" Sarah tries to shove past him but Jesse blocks her. "Guests aren't supposed to do house chores!" Jesse laughs at her failed attempts to get around him to the sink. He knows she's more than capable of shoving him out of the way but, since they're simply playing around, she's not using her full strength. Sarah may be small, but she's super strong for her slightly toned build. She prides herself more on her agility, stealth and quick thinking.
Jesse places the dishes and silverware on the drying wrack. "Too late." He grins, folding his arms over his chest.
"You suck." Sarah whines, tugging a lock of Jesse's black hair.
"Well, you swallow! Ow! Hey!" Jesse yanks Sarah's hand away as she laughs at him.
"Jesse, don't say that in my house." Joel complains, walking into the kitchen.
"Sorry, Joel." Jesse says as the teenagers move out of the way. They walk to the front door, grabbing their gear and going into the living room.
"Do you have everything besides Gus?" Jesse asks, double checking the magazine of his gun. Sarah does the same, making sure her 9mm is loaded. She tucks the gun into the back of her jeans, adjusting her shirt so it rests behind the gun, making it easier to grab in a rush.
"Yes, I do." Sarah replies, putting on her backpack and grabbing her bow. "And Gus is just as important as everything else in here so you hush." After making sure they have their gear, the two go to leave for patrol.
"Stay safe, kiddo." Joel says, hugging Sarah.
"Always." Sarah says with a smile, turning and walking out the front door. When she's out of earshot, Jesse gives Joel a small smile.
"She's gonna understand." He says. "It'll take time... but she'll understand."
"I hope you're right." Joel sighs. The old man rubs at his beard, looking to the floor with nervous eyes.
"It'll be okay." Jesse says, turning to leave. "See ya." He waves, running to catch up with Sarah who's waiting at the end of the walkway. Joel waves back, closing the door as the two walk away.
"So, have you managed to convince Ellie to move into the house yet?" Jesse asks, walking beside Sarah to the stables.
"Nope." Sarah sighs. "Pretty sure she likes the garage because it's easier to sneak girls over in the middle of the night." Sarah chuckles, remembering the time she accidentally walked in on Ellie and her ex girlfriend making out. Sarah wasn't really a huge fan of Cat. She was just too... normal. Boring. She can't help but admit she's much happier that Ellie is with Dina now. Even Jesse knows they're a better couple.
"I should've thought of that when my parents and I got here. Too bad we don't have a garage." Jesse chuckles. The sun shines down on the two friends, making Sarah's hair look like golden, silky curtains, moving gently in the cool breeze. The yellow glow is warm, making the chilly air more tolerable.
"What were you and Joel talking about?" Sarah asks as they walk into the stables, her curiosity getting the better of her. She doesn't like being nosey.
"Joel was just reminding me to get you back safely." Jesse shrugs, taking his horse from one of the stable workers. Sarah takes her horse, following Jesse out to the gate.
"C'mon, Ponyo." Sarah commands the caramel colored horse. Ponyo has been hers since she came to Jackson with Joel and Ellie. Sarah taught her to understand different commands using words and special clicking sounds. "He didn't threaten you again, did he?" She remembers the first few times she went on patrol with Jesse. Joel made sure he understood the consequences that would come if she got hurt.
"Nah, just a friendly talk." Jesse says before mounting his horse, Cobalt. Sarah mounts Ponyo, tying her bow to the side of the saddle with the rope. The gates open and the two set off.
The light Spring breeze rustles through the treetops, green leaves creating a harmonious, music-like sound. Horse hooves trample through the creek waters, causing tiny clear droplets to fly into the air and shimmer like stars. Wildflowers rest along the edges, basking in the sun's glow. The water rushes, blending with the sounds of the birds and insects.
"I think you should get a cat." Sarah says, changing the subject. Jesse rides not too far ahead of her, both of them scanning the treeline for infected they most likely won't find. It's better to be safe, though.
"What?" Jesse laughs, surprised to hear something so random. "Why a cat?"
"I dunno." Sarah shrugs, grinning when Jesse turns back to look at her with a puzzled face. "I just see you with a cat. Like a teacup kitten! Did you know that's a thing?!"
"What the hell's a teacup kitten?" Jesse asks.
"It's a kitten that can fit in a teacup!" Sarah says, enthusiastically. "Duh!"
"No way." Jesse snorts in disbelief.
"Uh, yes way! I saw them in a book!" Sarah cuts in. "Man... I wish I had a teacup kitten. Hey, do you think I could find a kitten one day?"
"Didn't you say you saw giraffes once?" Jesse recalls.
"Yeah, with Joel and Ellie." Sarah confirms, rolling up the sleeves of her flannel.
"Well, if you can find a giraffe, I'm sure you can find a cat." Jesse says. "Probably be harder to find one, though. They're not as big."
"One day, I'll own a dozen cats." Sarah decides. "I'll train them to attack infected."
"That'll be interesting to see." Jesse says as they arrive at the first outpost. The two of them tie up their horses in an open section of the building and head to the pallet covering a hole in the wall. Sarah stays quiet, pondering what Joel had said earlier that morning. "You good?" Jesse asks, moving the pallet out of the way and crawling through the hole.
"Yeah." Sarah says, quietly. She follows him through the hole, still stuck in her own thoughts.
"You're lying." Jesse points out, climbing up the rope into the office.
"I am not!" Sarah argues, pulling herself up to the floor.
"Yes, you are. I know you." Jesse says. He's right. He knows pretty much everything about her. He knows her almost better than she knows herself. He can tell when something's off about her from a mile away. "What's goin' on in that head of yours?" Sarah avoids his caring gaze, signing the two in and reporting the lack of infected.
"I'm just..." Sarah stands up, pressing a hand to her stomach, just over the scar that remains there from a bullet wound. Everyone believes she was shot by hunters. Well, everyone but Ellie and the Miller brothers. They know that she was really shot by a Firefly when they were escaping St. Mary's. She kept going as though she hadn't been injured at all. Joel didn't notice until they were driving away and he glanced over to see the blood seeping through her shirt. "I'm worried about what Joel has to say."
"Why are you worried?" Jesse asks, taking a few steps closer. Sarah looks up at him, gripping her shirt in her fist.
"What if... What if Joel is sick or he decided he doesn't want me around anymore?" Sarah's eyes widen at the confession of her greatest fear. "I know, it's stupid. But I'm always scared that people will get sick of me and just leave me behind." She grits her teeth, immediately regretting her words. What a dumb fear.
"Hey." Jesse takes Sarah's hand away from her shirt, holding it in both of his. His hands make hers look even smaller. They're warmer than hers, too. "Being afraid isn't stupid. But you will never be abandoned, okay? Joel's not leaving, Ellie and Dina aren't leaving, and I will never leave. You're not gonna be left behind, I promise."
Sarah smiles, something that Jesse can't help but feel extremely happy about. His own smile grows wider when Sarah hugs him. "Thanks." She says as Jesse hugs back. He rests his chin on her head.
"You're welcome." He responds. "And, Sarah?"
"Hm?"
"Whatever Joel tells you... just remember he really loves you." Sarah purses her lips, not sure exactly how to respond. She settles for nodding, cheek rubbing against his chest.
"C'mon." Sarah pulls away, adjusting her backpack with a little bounce. "Let's get this over with so I can get those wildflowers."
Jesse chuckles, following her to the rope. "Lead on."
Sarah and Jesse return to Sarah's house later that day, the patrol being fairly easy. Joel isn't home, probably out on his patrol route. Sarah lets out a deep sigh, setting her stuff down by the stairs and kneeling to dig around in her backpack. She pulls out Gus, pressing him against her chest as Jesse sets his bag beside hers.
"Think Ellie and Dina are home?" Jesse asks, handing Sarah the wildflowers she'd picked on their way back to Jackson.
Sarah shrugs, taking the flowers from him. "Should be. Probably in the garage."
"I'm gonna go bug them for a few minutes." Jesse grins, heading towards the back door.
Sarah simply nods, standing up to move into the living room. "Okay. Wanna stay and watch a movie 'till Joel gets back?"
"Sure." Jesse agrees. "You gonna cuddle with me instead of that toy?" He teases, gesturing to Gus.
"You know, I would've considered it but you called Gus a toy." Sarah raises a brow, a victorious smile on her face.
"Damn!" Jesse exclaims, pretending to be upset.
"I'll think about it." Sarah chuckles at Jesse's grin as he goes to greet their friends. Sarah's smile fades a bit when he walks out the door. She holds Gus tighter, searching the TV stand cabinet for a good movie to watch. She settles on a movie she's seen a million times but still adores; Coraline. After getting everything set up, she sits on the couch, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting Gus on top of them, holding his little stuffed limbs in her hands. Before the movie can even start, the back door slams and Jesse runs into the living room.
"Do NOT go in the garage!" Jesse says with a mix of horror and disgust.
"Why? What's wrong?" Sarah asks, confused.
"Let's just say I may have walked in on something I shouldn't have." Jesse explains, sitting on the couch beside Sarah.
"Oh!" Sarah says, immediately picking up on the reason Jesse's face is a beat red. "Well, I guess they're not watching Coraline with us." She chuckles. Jesse groans, most definitely scarred for life. Ten minutes into the movie, Jesse gets sick of Gus getting all the attention. He reaches over and snatches him from Sarah, despite her protests, and pulls her into his side, an arm wrapped around her shoulders.
"You don't get a choice. You get cuddles." Jesse laughs. Sarah makes no attempt to pull away, burying herself further into his arms, instead.
"If you don't... give me Gus... right now... I will cut your hand off." Sarah threatens, voice low. Jesse hands her Gus, his other arm moving to wrap in front of her. She holds onto his arm with one hand, Gus in the other. Just as they've done for years.
"Hey, why do you think the Beldam chose buttons?" Jesse asks, watching the buttons change as the creepy Other Mother calls out colors.
"Cause she's crazy." Sarah mumbles, entranced in the movie. "She probably likes the pain she causes when she sews them to their faces."
"Kinky." Jesse jokes. Sarah elbows him in the ribs. "Ow! What is your deal with hurting me today?" Sarah just chuckles, forgetting all about Gus somewhere on the couch and wrapping her arms around Jesse's torso. She takes a deep breath and sighs, her flannel covering her like a blanket.
Joel comes back just before sunset, finding the two teenagers curled up on the couch, Gus laying by Sarah's feet. He can't help the fear he hides inside of him. He crosses his arms, clearing his throat. The two turn to look at him before being sucked back into the end of the movie. "Hello, you two." He greets with a smile.
"Hey, Joel." Sarah responds. "How was patrol?"
"Pretty good." Joel responds, sticking his hands the pockets of his jeans. "Sarah, I... I need to talk to you."
"Okay." Sarah says, standing and following Joel into the dining room. She watches as he sits in one of the chairs, gesturing for her to sit beside him. She does so, pulling up a chair and turning it to face him. She feels a bit anxious, looking at his worried eyes.
"What I'm about to say..." Joel starts, looking to the wooden floor. "I'm not sure you're gonna like it." This only makes Sarah more worried.
"Joel, are you sick? Did- are you infec-"
"I'm your dad." Joel cuts Sarah off, looking directly at her.
"Okay." Sarah snorts. "Funny joke." She chuckles before seeing the serious look on Joel's face. "You're not joking." Her eyes go wide, confusion mixed with so many other feelings. "Wait... how... what?"
"I didn't wanna tell you because I was afraid." Sarah blinks a few times, trying to piece everything together. Sarah just stares at him, a look of pure shock on her face. "Say something... please?"
"You told me my dad was dead." Her voice is almost too quiet to hear but Joel picks up every word. "You lied to me..." At that moment, Sarah's shock turns into anger and hurt. She stands up, almost shoving the chair backwards. "Do you know how many nights I stayed up wishing I had a mother or father and feeling stupid for even wishing it?! You let me believe the only thing I had left of my parents was a fucking stuffed animal!!" Tears slip down Sarah's cheeks. She gasps for air, suddenly finding it hard to breathe. She's confused. One hand goes to the scar on her stomach. "I even tried to call you dad and you shut me down!! You made me feel like you didn't want me!!" Sarah sobs, breathing heavier. It feels like no air is entering her lungs. It feels like she's drowning. "I felt horrible for wishing you were my real dad because I thought you'd never want me as your daughter!!" She doesn't notice, but Jesse stands just behind her, trying not to intervene and make the situation worse.
Joel stands up, reaching for Sarah. "Sarah, I-"
"Don't touch me." Sarah seethes, wiping her cheeks. A look of hurt flashes on Joel's shameful face. He never wanted to hurt her. All Sarah's yelling causes Ellie and Dina to rush in from the garage. Sarah backs away, bumping into Jesse before running upstairs to her room. Dina goes to follow her, Jesse close behind, but Ellie puts a hand up.
"I've got this." Ellie says, climbing the stairs to Sarah's room. She hears the sobbing and choked gasps, immediately knowing Sarah is having a panic attack. She wastes no time knocking, opening the door just enough to squeeze into the room and close it behind her. She finds Sarah curled up in a ball on her bed, desperately trying to get air into her lungs. She's only had a panic attack once before and it wasn't as bad as this.
Ellie rushes to her her side, sitting in front of Sarah and gently grabbing her shoulders. "Sarah, look at me." Ellie commands with a soft but worried voice. "Look at me."
"Ellie." Sarah sobs. Everything she believed about her past had just been completely changed. If Joel doesn't want her as his daughter, why did he tell her the truth? Does he feel bad for lying all those years? Does it keep him up at night? Ellie pulls her into a hug, holding her shaking body.
"You're okay." Ellie says, rocking side to side a little. "Take a breath. Breathe with me, okay?" Sarah nods, clinging to Ellie like a lifeline. "In...out...in... see, you got it." Ellie continues to take deep breaths with Sarah until her breathing evens out.
"Why did he tell me?" Sarah sniffles. Ellie grows confused. Why wouldn't she want to know?
"What do you mean?" She asks.
"Why would he tell me he's my dad if he doesn't want me to be his daughter?" Sarah pulls away, laying back on the bed.
Ellie immediately feels Sarah's pain. "Of course he wants you to be his daughter." She says. "He was just... he was scared."
"Ellie, the last time I called him dad, he yelled at me for twenty fucking minutes. He was so pissed I thought his head was going to explode. He. Doesn't. Want. Me! Why else would he lie to me?" Sarah cries, covering her face with her palms. "He let me believe I had no family." Ellie isn't sure how to respond. Sarah went her entire life believing she knew what happened to her parents only to find out it was a lie. She wants to be happy Joel really is her father but she can't get over the fact that he lied to her. It's silent for a moment before Sarah speaks again.
"So, you know... Who else does?" She asks.
"Uh... Tommy and Maria knew from the start. Jesse knew and now Dina knows." Ellie answers, fidgeting with her fingers.
"Jesse?" Sarah's surprised at first, remembering what Jesse said when ther were on patrol. "Of course." Joel had told him this morning.
"Is there anything I can do?" Ellie asks, wanting to be there for Sarah. Sarah rolls over, facing away from the door.
"I just need some time alone, please?" Sarah doesn't want to be mean to Ellie but she needs a moment to process everything.
"Okay." Ellie nods, rubbing Sarah's shoulder. "Do you want me to bring you some dinner?" Sarah simply shakes her head, closing her eyes. Ellie nods, patting Sarah's shoulder before leaving her be.

A Soapy Sub-Plot Diminishes the Otherwise Brilliant From Up on Poppy Hill
In his excellent series, Movies with Mikey, Mikey Neumann asks a question about Jurassic Park II: Can one stupid scene ruin a great movie? When that little girl defeats a previously terrifying velociraptor with “gymnastics,” it undermines their power to scare the audience and spotlights a character the audience already doesn’t like. But does that erase any and all good qualities the rest of the movie has?
This question is terribly relevant to From Up on Poppy Hill, a 2011 film directed by Gorō Miyazaki. The son of Hayao Miyazaki, Gorō also directed the disappointing Tales from Earthsea. In Poppy Hill, he appears to have learned some lessons from his previous experience; the movie is enjoyable, moving, and packed with some of Studio Ghibli’s best dialogue yet.
This brings us back to Mikey’s question: Can the inclusion of a subplot that is in poor taste, hackneyed, and unnecessary ruin an otherwise fantastic film? Let’s just say this review’s going to have a hefty Spoiler Zone.
Tumblr media
There’s plenty to talk about before we get there, though. Set in1963, Poppy Hill tells the story of two teenagers, Umi and Shun. Umi is uber-responsible, essentially running a boarding house for her Grandmother while also studiously attending school and keeping an eye on her younger sister. She doesn’t have much choice in the matter; her father died while serving  in WWII, and her mother is studying in America.
Shun has a more normal home life, but is deeply involved in “the Latin Quarter,” a massive, old, and dilapidated building that houses innumerable school clubs (all of which are apparently boys-only). The major plot thread of the movie concerns attempts by, you know, Big Business or whoever to demolish the Latin Quarter and build a shiny new facility in its place. The facility would still be for the students, so it’s not a matter of losing their place; it’s a matter of losing the historical building itself.
While Umi’s extreme competence and selflessness endear her to the viewer, the Latin Quarter steals the show whenever the characters visit. I always think it’s bogus and pretentious when people speak of a city or location as “another character, really,” but they’d probably say it about the quirky clubhouse. I’d still disagree, though. The Latin Quarter is such a fun locale because of the many well-written actual characters inside it. The lavish details of the building itself don’t hurt, of course, but it’s really the clubs themselves that bring it to life.
Tumblr media
A big part of that comes from some of the best, let’s call it, “background dialogue” of any movie I’ve seen. Neither Umi nor Shun are particularly funny, but the large cast of unnamed Latin Quarter club members are consistently hilarious throughout the movie. At the risk of doing the original screenwriters a discredit, I’m tempted to lay some of this success at the feet of Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, who oversaw the production of the U.S. dub. Both also worked on the dubs for Ponyo and Arrietty, were also excellently localized. Whoever deserves the credit, the movie is much richer for it.
Now, I’ve said that Umi and Shun aren’t especially funny, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t compelling. Just like the club members who populate the Latin Quarter, the protagonists are endearing because they both feel like they have lives outside of this movie. In different ways, Umi and Shun are both competent and passionate people, avoiding the “waiting for the plot to start” feeling that comes from less fully realized characters. Umi in particular has a moving emotional arc, made all the more powerful by how much of her growth, while inspired by those around her, seemed to come from decisions she made on her own.
Clearly, there’s a lot to love about From Up on Poppy Hill. The fly in the ointment shows up as Umi and Shun grow closer. It’s only natural that the movie would introduce some form of conflict into the story of their relationship, but the chosen form of that conflict leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It’s something of a twist and happens a good bit into the movie, so I’ll only discuss it directly in the Spoiler Zone, but the long and short of it is that it was a poor choice, it doesn’t give our protagonists anything interesting to do, and it took me about 10 seconds to think of an alternative that would involve minimal differences to the rest of the story.
Tumblr media
You may recall that Gorō’s previous directorial effort, Tales From Earthsea, showed some promise but was ultimately weighed down by its failures. You may wonder if Poppy Hill is in a similar situation; fortunately, although the Bad Subplot does detract from the movie, the ratio of good to bad here is wildly better than in Earthsea. This time around, the strengths outweigh the blunders, and I recommend it to any Ghibli fans — I just wish the recommendation didn’t have to come with an asterisk.
Up Next:
It’s The Wind Rises! It’s currently Hayao Miyazaki’s most recent film (no release date for How Do You Live? yet) and I’m very excited for it.
Stray Notes:
Maybe my favorite of the many great background lines in the clubhouse: “How can we make archaeology cool again?” “We can’t.”
woooaaaah floor potato storage
Ghibli knows how to cut away from a joke (and not dwell on it)
Wow they’re really hitting the old vs new thing hard
Artist girl is an enormous mood
Lil Umi and her flags OH NO
Urinal conversation huh
“It’s like a cheap melodrama” YEAH KINDA MY MAN
Ah yes, rice goop
Giant Philosophy Man is great

That explosion was magnificently animated
Spoiler Zone
So, Umi and Shun are growing closer and like 5 seconds from making out when they discover that Umi’s late father is also Shun’s birth father, who gave him to Shun’s adoptive parents when he was still just a baby. They’re actually brother and sister! Who doesn’t love a good incest subplot?
Besides being soapy and gross, it just doesn’t make for a good story. It’s an automatic shutdown; you can’t even root for them to “overcome” this obstacle and still end up together, because … incest. While you could say there’s something to watching them learn to interact with each other non-romantically, it just kind of torpedoes their part of the movie for a bit.
I say for a bit, because of course this subplot is resolved the only way it possibly could be: Oops, they actually aren’t brother and sister! Herein lies the other part of the problem — the resolution has nothing to do with the efforts of Umi and Shun. Like I said, it doesn’t really work to have them trying to “solve” this problem, so they’re simply informed at the end of Act 3 that Umi’s dad took baby Shun from another dude, who died, and gave him to Shun’s birth parents.
Action is artificially injected into this story by having the not-so-star-crossed pair race across town so they can meet a sailor who knew their parents before his ship leaves. While I understand that they’d want to meet this man, they both seemingly know all the important bits — i.e., that they aren’t related — before they talk to him, which makes the sense of urgency feel very forced. I say “seemingly” because for reasons unknown, we only see Umi learn this crucial information. We never see Shun learn it, and we never see the two of them talk about it. Presumably, what should’ve been a climactic moment happened off-screen.
All the narrative problems aside, it’s also just gross whenever the scripts ties itself into knots to make incest a concern. It was bad in Speaker for the Dead, it was bad in the trailer for that stupid theme park show, it’s bad in every other comedy anime, and it’s bad here.
I can only assume that this was their way of having the relationship reflect the theme of the past affecting the present? But they could’ve just as easily introduced conflict through a revelation that Umi’s dad was somehow responsible for the death of Shun’s dad: it makes the past a barrier between them, puts them in a place to work at not letting the past actions of others affect their future, AND at no point does anyone have to say, “wait, don’t worry, it’s actually not incest!” Wins all around!

Marichat May Day 14: Chocolate
Summary:
After several Valentine's Days with akumas, the cats tear down a bit when they are offered some chocolate from Marin and Marinette.
------------------
If someone were to see the feline superheroes of Paris, they would see two very serious teenagers looking in all directions, as if they were waiting for something to happen when least expected. In reality, they were doing that, but they were actualy stressed and jumpy. After all, it was Valentine's Day, a day of happiness to many, but also a day of sadness, wrath and depression for others. And of course, Hawk Moth, Mayura, Papilionidae and Le Paon had to take advantatge of the situation and create powerful akumas and/or amoks every single year. Didn't they had a loved one to spent the day with and they were so bitter about it that they had to ruin the day for everyone else? Sometimes Chat Noir and Kitty Noire wanted to use their batons to bat the villains to the next month, but they didn't go to the battlefield that much.
They were on the lookout for the whole day, relentlessly patrolling the streets of Paris with their full attention to even the minor signal of an akuma appearance. They went across every single street, road and alley of Paris at least five times, making sure that everything was in order and with their batons ready to call Alya and Alen so they could post about the akuma on the Ladyblog and the Lordblog. However, the villains seemed to have taken things more calamly this year, because not a single feather or wing was seen on the whole day. Actually, it were the cats who, after patrolling without stopping for the whole day, were utterly exhausted to the point that Ladybug and Lordbug had to call them and tell them to go to rest.
Nonetheless, the cats had different plans for the rest of the afternoon. They headed towards the Dupain-Cheng bakery to see their favourite civilians of all times and see if they could complain a bit to them and get pampered for once. Althought they actually doubted for a second, thinking that they must have been enjoying the day with someone else as a date. But they still went all the way to their house, comfirmating that they were inside and apparently hadn't gone anywhere on the special Saturday. They where about to descend to the building when they saw Marin and Marinette come out to Marin's rooftop spot with a trait filled with pastries, chairs, a thermos and cups. They poured the content from the thermos inside the cups and made a toast before gulping down whatever was in the thermos. When they looked up after drinking, they spotted Chat and Kitty with baffled faces and they gestured for them to come, to what the cats made sure to comply.
"Fancy seeing you two spying on us on such a day" says Marinette smirking.
"Oh, no, we weren't spying on you, we actually were coming to see you when we saw you two coming out with everything" says Chat Noir.
"Yet you stayed on the other roof observing us from afar, which I believ it's considerd to be spying" says Marin grinning. "But given the day, I can guess what you two were doing outside".
"Oh yes? And what exactly do you think that we were doing?" says Chat.
"Well, I'd say that you were going to a date and used your powers to get across the nassty traffic more easily, but I know it's because you've been all day on the lookout for any akuma or amok" says Marin.
"He's right, and let me tell you, it's so exhausting" says Kitty sitting on the floor.
"Don't sit on the floor Kitty, we brought extra chairs because we supposed that we'd saw you today" says Marinette as she points to the chairs behind her.
"Well then, if you don't mind me..." says Kitty sitting on a chair in front of the Dupain-Cheng twins.
"So you were expecting us huh?" says Chat Noir.
"Of course, we thought that we'd either saw you patroling around here or that you'd come a bit" says Marin.
"Looks like the later was the good one" says Marinette.
"What can we say, we love spending some time with you two" says Kitty.
"That we know Kitty, because we also love spending time with you two like this, just casually chatting without any duty or any responsability" says Marinette.
"You're exaggerating Princess, spending time with two alley cats like us must be tiring rather than something loveale" says Chat Noir.
"Well, even if you sometimes act like mangy alley cats, I'd say that the overall is quite enjoyable" says Marin. "We wouldn't be this friendly otherwise. You wouldn't get as many treats for sure".
"And we're thankful for the treats" says Kitty smiling. "They are the sun of our lives, making worth all the shit that keeps happening in this cursed world".
"So poetic" says Marinette giggling.
"We are cats of culture after all. Poesy, music, anime and literature, we're fluent in the four of them" says Chat Noir.
"I'm not sure if you should include anime in that cultural group, but anime is certainly great" says Marin.
"There are endless animes that can't be forgotten and everybody knows about regardless if they watch anime or not" says Kitty. "To mention some of them: Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Naruto, Ranma1/2, One Piece or the Ghibli Studio movies".
"I love the Ghibli Studio, their movies are so good, so touching and interesting" says Marinette.
"I mean, what type of bitter person do you have to be to not like Ghibli Studio?" says Chat. "They are classics!"
"I remember that my favourite Ghibli movie when I was a kid was Ponyo. Now I would say that Princess Mononoke is my favourite" says Marin.
"I'd say that The Howling Castle gets the first place for me" says Kitty Noire.
"Me too! I love The Howling Castle, it's so moving" says Marinette.
"I'd say that the Ghibli movie I enjoyed the most would be Chihiro's Journey" says Chat Noir. "That and Kiki, because it had a black cat".
"How could we forget that time you were on a Ghibli movie? says Marin chuckling.
"Nah, if I had to represent myself with a black cat from the cinema I'd say I'm Scat Cat from The Aristocats" says Chat Noir.
"Does that makes me Duchess or Mari then?" says Kitty Noire.
"If I had to put you as a cartoon film cat, I'd say that you're more like Jiji than Chat" says Marinette.
"So I'm the one who appears on Kiki delivery service then?" says Kitty amused.
"Well, you're basically what one would expect from a talking cat: sarcastic, playful and terribly loyal" says Marin. "Just like Jiji".
"And here I said that I was like Scat Cat because cats are the only ones who know how to jazz" says Chat Noir.
"Not sure that you know how to jazz kit-cat" says Marinette giggling. "If it's anything like your serenades, I'd rather not listen to it".
"You hurt me with those words Princess" says Chat dramatically.
"Well, then I guess Mari could make you a bit happier for today" says Marin, leaving the cats confused.
"So we're doing it now?" says Marinette. "We're giving them tha right now?"
"Sure, why not? We were going to give it to them anyway" says Marin.
"What exactly is what you are giving us" says Kitty Noire curiously.
"Don't you know that curiosity killed the cat?" says Marinette flickering Kitty's nose.
"But Princess, satisfactio brought it back" says Chat.
"Guess we have to go for it then" says Marin getting up and going with Marinette to his room. "Stay here for a moment".
"What are they going for?" says Chat curious.
"I don't know brother, but I'm also very interested about it" says Kitty.
"Good thing that we didn't leave it that far then" says Marinette as she comes back with Marin, both hiding something behind them.
"Here you go" says Marin as he gives a gift to Kitty while Marinette gives one to Chat.
"Woah, what is this?" says Chat examining the wrapping paer and the shape of the box.
"You're supposed to open it to know that brother" says Kitty Noir as she opens the gift, revealing chocolates.
"We wanted to give this as a token of gratitude for always being there and saving the city so many times" says Marinette.
When they see the chocolates, Chat Noir and Kitty Noire let some tears fall, moved by the gesture from Marinette and Marin. The designers were worried at first when they saw the cats cry, but the cats quickly explained that they weren't sad, but moved by the appreciaton that Marin and Marinette had showed them, giving them some chocolates on Valentine's Day as a thank you for doing their job as heroes. The fact that someone appreciated thir work after relentlessly having to patrol the city all day was simply so emotive for the cats that they couldn't help but to shed some tears, specially because it was a gesture from their favourite civilians, their friends and the ones who valued them just as much as Ladybug and Lordbug.
When the cats finally calmed down, they thanked the designer duo and hugged them tightly, showing their appreciation for them and also thanked them for always being there. Sure, maybe they didn't have a romantic relationship between the fur of them, but they had a much more valuable friendship than any other relationship they could ask for. The cats promise to return the gesture like it was usual on animes, by giving something to them on the fourteenth of March, to which Marinette and Marin laughed quite a bit, but they were happy about ti either way. They now had soomething to look forward that March after all.

ehehhee breakdown time - bitching into the void bc i can’t be bothered to make a vent blog . thats it.
i’ve spent the whole day trying and failing to write any kind of ucas personal statement and i . i do not know the kind of person i want to be because i’m so terrified of failure.
the ed has come back with a vengeance & i have zero constructive things that i Want to do and im currently functioning on the level of if i don’t want to do it for layers of reasons i sit down and stare blankly into the void for 4 hours.
so bad day all round.
i don’t know if i’d even like an english lit degree environment because i love fiction and engaging with fiction probably more than anything. it’s all i’ve ever done consistently. but so help me god if i walk into an english degree and its like my politics degree environment. i don’t think i could do it. god it’s awful and like, of course i care about politics because im a human being in a society - i have to. but there are Far better people to talk about local campaign groups with because it’s not my cup of tea. i don’t get it. i really don’t. i tried - and i didn’t like it
god this is all so contingent on even being let into universities - i have 2 a levels, an as level and a pass at grade 8 rad ballet. no uni with a decent eng lit degree will let me within 500 ft.
a large part of all of this is that i’m very exceedingly shit at building or sustaining personal or professional relationships. period. im categorically not. im genuinely shit at it
and i know all the millions of reasons why and i know i need to change but every time i send a text i don’t /do it/.
god at 17 i was an annoying little shit and i know that, and everyone who met me at 17 knows that, and i Know i really needed to be taken down a peg. but i’m nothing like i was at 17 - apart from rather fucking depressed - and i don’t know why my stepmother keeps trying to teach me i’m still full of myself and being horrible. god i wish i was joking about the anime comment the other day but i heard the words ‘isn’t ‘anime’ just about little girls? a lot of it’s awful content, awful. i can’t believe you watch it’ ‘oh well you know, its just for old men wanted to get off, all schoolgirl fantasies and that’ leveled at me across the kitchen table and i’m not good at memory retention but that’s seared into my fucking soul. (it was saved by her son bringing up ponyo and it filtered out from there but . we all bloody know what she said.
she also asked me if i wanted to throw ‘a comic con party’ for my birthday, and like my dad can tell me it’s just her trying to be nice and engage with me but fucking hell, does she know im not 7 years old . i’ve tried thinking the best of her and i’ve tried not thinking the worst of her and i’ve changed my behavior and stopped reacting and . i still get the pointy end of the stick. the accusations and the needling critique . im tired.
which, i don’t want her approval. i don’t want her love or for her to treat me like a daughter or whatever nonsense my last counselor tried to sell me. i want her to stop attacking my every action or comment. im tired. im really tired.
i Know i’ve stupidly priviledged i cant spell that word, i know. i live at home. i haven’t got a job - ive been searching since mid august. nothing. only a nightclub that was 20 layers of suicidal ideation in a can and a food retail position that fell through. nothing. i have literally exhausted whole pages of indeed.com and i am so so tired. and im lucky that my survival doesn’t depend on this. i live with my parents. they give me bus money. it’s idyllic and im going up the wall failing to be independent.
there is. so much more to this but im really tired and i’m not asking for like. advice or anything, if you read this far. im just bitching into the void because my brain is tired . also yeah, i know i need therapy. ohh god do i need therapy

New Amsterdam Chapter 34
[This is stupid.]
{It’s a great plan!}
[And we just ate!]
{But—we need to know!}
[We already know!]
“Quiet idiots!” muttered Wade as he laid out the takeout bag on the edge of the roof. He opened and closed a few times to get the mouth-watering smell to circulate. “She won’t come if you’re loud.”
[She can’t hear us. Idiot.]
“Be nice, White,” said a voice behind him. Deadpool whirled and saw the strange girl with wings standing behind him, sniffing the air delicately. “Is that—are those chimichangas?” she asked. Her wings rustled as she leaned forward, but she didn’t step away from her spot.
Wade grinned. His plan was working! “They are,” he agreed.
She edged a little closer, eyeing him and not the bag. “Is this bait?” she asked. She didn’t sound upset—merely curios.
“Yup,” admitted Wade shamelessly. “I wanted to talk to you again.”
“Kay.” She effortlessly sat on the edge of the building, opened the bag, and grabbed a paper wrapped snack. “What do you want to talk about?” she asked as she unwrapped it and took a small bite. “Oh, these are so good!”
“Aren’t they? Maria makes the best chimichangas in the city!”
“Mmm,” agreed the girl shoveling in another bite of the hot food. She chewed and swallowed before fishing another one out of the bag and handing it towards him. “You eating?” she asked.
“Ah—no. Don’t want to put you off your appetite,” Wade said gently.
The girl sighed, reached behind her with a surprisingly limber arm, and pulled something out of the bag with her hand. Still eating she pulled the sketchbook out, flipped it open with one hand, and then showed him a picture. “Like that, right?” she asked as she chewed.
The sketch showed him, in all his scarred glory, eating pancakes. It was shocking—it was impossible—
—it verified his theory. “No,” he said absently as he took the book and stared at the pictures. “I got those for you.”
“Thanks.”
{Holy shit! She made us look good!}
“Thanks Yellow.”
Wade paused. Then turned to look at her. “You can—hear the boxes?” he asked hesitantly.
She swallowed her current bite. “No, but you twitch different depending on which one’s speaking and if they’re being assholes,” she said. She unwrapped the second and began to eat it.
“I was thinking,” Wade said as he went back to the book. “Thinking about what you said about not being from around here, with your accent. And I thought to myself, Wade, there’s a whole multiverse out there, and I bet she came from one of them.”
She snorted. “I love how that’s not actually a question. The answer’s yes, by the by.” She took another bite.
Wade turned the page and stared at picture of Peter. Not his Petey-Pie—but just similar and just different enough that he found it a little creepy. He closed the book and looked at the girl sitting on the edge of the roof, swinging her feet as she ate her food. “What are you doing here?” he asked curiously.
She looked up, her hands clenched on the food making its innards squish all over them and she snarled, “I’m on the RPG quest from Hel!” She looked down at her hands and sighed. “Man,” she moaned as she licked the food off them. “I was trying to stay clean.”
“Ponyo!” A pink slime thing popped out from the bag on her back and glooped down to her lap.
“That’s slightly freaky,” Wade announced as he watched the thing eating the bits of grease on the pink leotard.
“Yeah, don’t get too close. Dora exhales cyanide gas—in low amounts, but too close will make you pass out.” One hand drifted towards the slime which reached out a tentacle to wrap around the finger.
“So—Dora is like your personal cleaning squad?” asked Wade, puzzled.
“And friend. And ESA. And proof of identity.” The girl snorted. “I could stand in a field of people like me and Dora would always know which one was me.”
“That come up often?”
“Surprisingly no.” The girl continued eating.
[Why surprisingly?]
{I can’t believe you’re hung up on that when she knows when we’re talking!}
“Nice to see you too, Yellow,” said the girl calmly.
{See? How does she know?}
Wade frowned. “Good question; how do you know?”
She took the sketchbook back and shoved it into her bag. “You raised me,” she said after swallowing. “You and Peter.”
[Impossible.]
{How did she not die?}
[It would have to be mostly Peter.]
“How?”
She swallowed the last chimichanga, neatly put the wrappers back in the bag before crumpling it and expertly tossing it into the dumpster in the alley below them. “I was made in a lab,” she explained.
Wade gripped the side of the roof.
She nodded. “Just as bad as you’re thinking. And, before you ask, you killed the bitch.” She smiled.
{I don’t want to know how bad it was.}
[We already do.]
“We got rescued, and I was put into yours and Peter’s custody.”
“We’re MARRIED?!” They had just agreed to start dating right before dinner!
She merely nodded. “Oh, yeah,” she said firmly. “And you wouldn't believe in how many different dimensions? Multiverses? Worlds? One of those. Anyway, the two of you are together in a lot of them.” She licked grease off her fingers.
“And—we—raised you?”
“Oh, yeah.” Suddenly she snickered. “You should have heard Tony yelling the first time you took me to Sister Margaret’s. I could hear down the hall and in the cafeteria.”
[Told you it was mostly Peter.]
“And you’re the first person to guess where I’m from.” She calmly set her hands in her lap and the slime slid over them. “Maybe that’s due to the—alternate view? Wall breaking? I forget how you explained it.” The slime slid up her chest and back into the bag on her back as she watched its path of travel fondly.
[Why were you put into our care?]
Wade thought that was a good question, so he repeated it.
She hefted the wing that the bad guy earlier had blown up. “In case you haven’t noticed,” she said dryly, “I have a pretty good healing factor. Not come back from the dead good,” she quickly added, “but I’ve learned how to protect my core so that I’m not in danger of actually dying.” She quickly leaped up, standing on the ledge of the roof. “Anything else?”
{Ask her how long we were married!}
“Do you have a place to stay?” he asked.
“I have a—safe place to rest,” she said. “But I can’t do that too long. I’ve got to find the person I’m looking for, and I’m on a timer to do it.”
Wade heard an echo in her voice, an echo of Spiderman’s determination. He’d seen Webs go after a criminal with a broken leg. Spidey’s broken leg, that is. “Don’t forget you still need to rest,” Wade warned. “No matter how fast you heal, you’re going to need time to rest and recover.” He expected her to get mad, to tell him that he had no idea what she needed to do and that he needed to stay out of her way. It’s what he would have said, in her place.
She grinned. “I told you I found a safe place, didn’t I?” she asked cheekily before jumping off the roof.
[I can definitely see where we contributed.]
{You think she’s got boxes too?}
[Shut up, Yellow.]
