Hey SS here, good to know that you know that Zenkaiger is Goat. Just so you know, if didn't know already, the actor who interpret Zox is part of a group or something (I really don't the term srry 🤡😅) so that's why is good, I think he has a video practicing his own henshin dances and things (which are one of the best things Zenkaiger has done, and that list is big, really good show imo)

I get frustrated because it feels like Drive was completely different before the midseason. Like character development and relationships got dropped. And I think it's kind of a pattern, see Lupat: Kairi is getting darker and emotionally detached and Kogure is shady and even the theme song shows Kogure trapping the Lupinrangers in the book and episode 34 Kairi murders his own brother.... but then the series gets immediately lighter. Feel like blaming Toei for everything, that's all.

I feel like most shows these days get something like that. I mean interviews have straight up stated that due to positive audience reaction the humagears got more spotlight in 01, so it seems the later direction of these shows is super influenced and changed by that

The Marvelous/Kairi one was so funny! Could you do a follow up with Marvelous/Kairi/Keiichiro? 25??

I can and will make Captain Marvelous kiss everyone. Which is to say that, Anon, normally I stick pretty strictly to doing prompts in the order that I receive them, but this one is skipping the queue kind of a lot because I am so very in the mood to write more of that story. 25, for those of you who might have forgotten or are new, is what I’ve started thinking of as the “Get A Room” Kiss.

Kairi and Keiichiro are separated again in the fighting, and while Keiichiro’s not exactly happy about it, he trusts the LupinRangers to take care of themselves. The city’s in too much danger to focus on soothing his own nerves. Then, after the fighting’s over, Jyuoh Eagle hails him by name, and he remembers the achingly earnest man with the impossible dream he’d met off-planet, so he and Tsukasa have to go meet the other Jyuohgers and find out what the rest of the team is like if their leader is like that. Nearby, Sakuya is making sure that the kids with the trains have a way to get home and that their parents know where they are this late at night. They seem awfully young to be getting caught up in things like this, sweet and smiling and full of manic teenage enthusiasm.

Eventually, though, everyone disperses. ToQ Gogou gives Sakuya an impulsive hug before her team hurries into a nearly train station and apparently vanishes. Jyuoh TheWorld, who Keiichiro realizes he’s met before, trades phone numbers with Tsukasa, saying something about repairing some of her plush collection, while Jyuoh Lion gives them a demo CD for his band before bounding off. There’s a sense of camaraderie that Keiichiro appreciates. Solidarity between people trying to make the world a safer place.

And then it’s just his team, and Tsukasa and Sakuya both look exhausted, so Keiichiro says, “I’ll take the car back to HQ, you two go home,” and they’re gone too.

He doesn’t realize how worried he’s been until he hears a rustle behind him and Kairi says, “So that was a whole thing. What’s the deal with those train kids?”

“They’re fifteen, is the deal, they should be in bed, not running around putting their lives in danger.” Keiichiro relaxes all at once and turns to pull Kairi into a hug. “I was worried about you. How are the others? Did I see Tooma talking to one of those...pirates?”

“The Gokaigers. Yeah, we hung out a little before they had to go, they’re pretty cool.” Kairi sounds calm enough, but his arms around Keiichiro’s shoulders say that he was just as worried.

“You would think that.”

“Well, yeah, who wouldn’t think space pirates are cool?” Kairi’s eyes gleam in the streetlights. “Also, I kissed Gokai Red.”

Keiichiro raises an eyebrow. “Really.”

“In my defense, he hit on me first. Invited me to ‘come up and see his ship,’ even.”

“Well, he’s a pirate, I assume he knows treasure when he sees it.”

Kairi turns bright red and coughs. “Well. I, uh. Not like I was gonna leave with him or anything, but I figured you deserved to know.”

“Thank you. And of course not, I trust you.” Keiichiro takes a moment to enjoy Kairi’s continued blush before adding, “Also, I’m sure I’m a better kisser than some pirate.”

“I don’t know, it’s been a while, I might need a sample for comparison.”

Keiichiro’s about to respond to that when a massive shadow falls over them and instead he says, “I thought you said they had to leave.”

Kairi steps back, peering up at the pirate ship floating overhead. “They did leave.”

A hatch opens on the side of the ship, and someone drops out, landing neatly on his feet on the ground--a stocky man in a red coat with a distinctly swashbuckling sort of air.

He nods briefly to Keiichiro and then advances on Kairi, picks him up by the front of his shirt, and sticks a hand into the back pocket of his pants--

Keiichiro says, “Excuse me.”

--and comes out with some kind of small red figurine. “Pretty clever, picking my pocket. So were you aiming for DekaRed specifically, or did you just grab whatever you could reach?”

“Kairi, you didn’t.”

Kairi grins. “Well, I would’ve snagged whatever, but that one looked interesting, I wanted to show him.” He jerks his head in Keiichiro’s direction. “Anyway, it did what I wanted it to do.”

The pirate stares steadily at him, not yet setting him down. “Which was?”

“Figured it’d be a decent excuse for you to come back.”

A long, long pause, and then the pirate smirks and lets go of Kairi’s shirt, letting him drop the two or three inches to the ground. “I get you. So about the other thing you stole from me, then--”

Keiichiro buries his face in his hands, and then looks up again immediately at Kairi’s slightly nervous laugh and, “Yeah, about that.”

“What about it?”

“Gokai Red, meet PatRan Ichigou.” Kairi gestures in Keiichiro’s direction. “Kei-chan, this is Captain Marvelous. You know, the one I was just telling you about.”

The pirate’s got a firm grip and an appraising stare, but with that Keiichiro’s on familiar ground; he dealt with worse just at the Academy, let alone the sort of nonsense you deal with talking to city administrators. “Asaka Keiichiro. It’s a pleasure.”

“So you’re this city’s other Red.” Captain Marvelous looks him over thoughtfully and then jerks his head at Kairi. “Likewise. So is he always this reckless?”

Keiichiro grins. “Oh no, usually he’s much worse.”

Kairi sputters. “Babe!”

“Kairi, I love you, but I’m not going to lie to a colleague just so you can pretend you have good impulse control.”

More sputtering. “You’re calling me reckless? Who’s the one who got himself poisoned--”

Captain Marvelous leans back against a lamppost and raises an eyebrow. “A colleague?”

Keiichiro shrugs. “We’re all sentai here. You may be a pirate, but if you’re also sentai then I’m willing to assume your heart’s in the right place.”

“Really.” Captain Marvelous looks momentarily thoughtful at that. “So did your other half here tell you--”

“That he kissed you? Yes, actually.”

“How do you know I didn’t kiss him?”

“He was fairly clear about who’d initiated, thank you. But as long as he’s not upset about it, I can hardly blame you, he’s worth kissing.”

Next to them, Kairi starts blushing and sputtering again. Captain Marvelous’ eyes flick to him for a moment, but his calmly amused expression remains the same. “Did he tell you that he’d said I ought to look you up if I wanted to see about doing it some more?”

Keiichiro feels his own face warm up, but he stays steady--he doesn’t know if Kairi was trying to make him jealous, but he’s certainly not going to lose his temper in public about it. “Be my guest. I trust him to know what he’s doing.”

Captain Marvelous straightens up from the lamppost. “Well, I did come here to get back the things he stole from me.”

“Hey, don’t rip my jacket,” Kairi says mildly as Captain Marvelous grabs his lapels, and--

Well, at this point Keiichiro’s sure there should really be laws about this sort of thing. In fact, he’s going to propose some. Yano Kairi officially banned from making little sighing noises and turning into jelly when his boyfriend is both in public and in uniform. He’d never expected to have to apply those laws to seeing Kairi kiss another man in front of him, but it’s certainly a learning experience.

When Captain Marvelous stops kissing him, Kairi actually sways, sounding out-of-breath as he says, “That was way more of a kiss than the one I got from you.”

“Your other half seemed to be enjoying the show.” Captain Marvelous grins. He hasn’t let go of Kairi’s jacket. “And that is what I do. I make things showy.”

“You sure do.”

“Anyway, it goes against all of my instincts as a pirate, but I should probably return you now.”

“Actually...”

They both turn to look at Keiichiro, Kairi dark-eyed and flushed, Captain Marvelous a bit unsteady himself and with his fingers still curling around Kairi’s lapels.

This might be the most reckless thing Keiichiro’s ever done in his life (outside of nearly getting himself killed), and Tsukasa won’t believe it if he tells her (which he’s not going to), but his voice comes out calmer than he’s expecting. “If you’ve got the time, I wouldn’t mind the opportunity to compare methods. You know, with a fellow sentai.”

Captain Marvelous stares at him and then huffs out a laugh. “Let me call my crew and tell them I’ll be a while.”

When he lets go, Kairi stumbles and then sways into Keiichiro, slinging an arm around his shoulders and murmuring into his ear, “This is really what you want, Kei-chan? You’re not just. Like. Doing this because you think I want it, right?”

“If I didn’t want to,” Keiichiro says, still more steadily than he feels, “I wouldn’t have said it. You know how I feel about you making that noise.”

2019 Year in Review: Tokusatsu

holy crap I watched so much tokusatsu last year, I blame @shewasanamericangirl

Here’s a list:

Lupinranger vs. Patoranger Liveman ToQger Kyuranger Ryusoulger Timeranger Zi-O Ryuki Decade Black Black RX W OOO Zero-One Garo Chapter of the Black Wolf Bycrosser Sh15uya Voicelugger (and Tokusatsu Gagaga even though it’s a show about tokusatsu and not tokusatsu itself)

not to mention all the movies and specials!

My top 5 of 2019:

5. Kamen Rider W - I love the two-person Rider mechanic of the show. Shotaro and Philip are such great and relatable protagonists, and it’s fun to see how they react to their bond being tested during the show. It’s also a great way to introduce the new phase of Kamen Rider. 4. Uchu Sentai Kyuranger - There were some flaws with it, not every character got as much love as they should, and some weren’t as appealing as others, but Kyuranger looked great and had the right mix of comedy and drama. I love Xiao Longbao, Tsurugi, Kotaro, and Hammy. 3. Kamen Rider Ryuki - It’s not as flashy as later Kamen Rider shows, but the design of the Kamen Rider suits is really appealing. I love the premise of the show, which explores what different types of people would do if given the power of a Kamen Rider. 2. Voicelugger - It’s only 12 episodes, so there’s no excuse not to watch it. It’s Shotaro Ishinomori’s love letter to tokusatsu, and his final work. Akiko Homura is one of my favorite tokusatsu protagonists. I can’t say too much more, you just have to experience it for yourself. 1. Mirai Sentai Timeranger - Yasuko Kobayashi never fails to deliver. It feels slightly edgier and grittier than the typical Sentai, but it is still Sentai. It has a wonderful group, wonderful villains, great music, and it just really captivated me.

oh boy, i could go on about this all day. which i will. hope you don’t mind that they’ll mostly be guys, as tokusatsu in general tends to be a sausagefest. i’ll try to avoid spoilers for the aforementioned non-toku devotees.

let’s get the obvious one out of the way first!

black woz from kamen rider zi-o

he came from 50 years in the future to give a high school boy a magic belt that would enable him to become an evil king with ultimate dominion over space-time

catchphrase: “REJOICE!” followed by super hammed up dramatic speeches whenever said high school boy gains a cool new power

he basically worships this high school boy and tries to encourage him to become the despot who shaped the dystopian hellscape woz came from

he has a doppelganger we call white woz whose goals are completely counter to his, and you know what? the woz who stans the evil king is the good one

he likes natto and mustard on his rice

he can actually be surprisingly sassy if you push his buttons enough

woz’s actor, keisuke watanabe, is the prettiest human being in this universe

shinji kido from kamen rider ryuki

REJOICE! he’s also in zi-o!

he transforms into kamen rider ryuki, with dragon powers and a mask like a sports car grille

catchphrase is “oi, ren!” which was changed for me forever after watching the end of the rider time ryuki special

he is my son! i want to adopt him!

dumb as fuck, heart of gold, will let you peg

he works as a reporter at a not very reputable newspaper which seems to mostly publish investigations of weird rumors and urban legends

he also works as a waiter at this cute teahouse

he still has no money because his friend yui broke a window

in the world of ryuki, kamen riders must duke it out in a battle royale by transforming into their super alter egos and entering the monster-infested world on the other side of reflective surfaces

shinji doesn’t want to fight anyone though, he just wants to keep the monsters from hurting people!

he’s such a sweet cute idiot. i’d protect him with my life.

akira nijino from ressha sentai toQger

transforms into toQ 6gou, the the orange toQger

catchphrase: “this is the place where i will die…” (and variations on that)

reformed monster turned magical railroad worker turned hero

his introductory arc will tug at your heartstrings

his face turn happened after he saw a rainbow for the first time, and henceforth dedicated his life to protecting rainbows

his guilt complex hangs over him in the form of a literal rain cloud

he’s normally taciturn but gets super cheerful and giggly in the presence of cute baby animals, especially kittens

he loves public baths so much he uses the word “aishiteru”

he often makes his dramatic entrance while playing a mournful tune on his harmonica

he’s got a lot of internal conflict going on but he’s such a good guy

his monster form has the softest fluffiest ears and a bitchin cowboy outfit

seriously sets off my gaydar for some reason?

noel takao from kaitou sentai lupinranger VS keisatsu sentai patranger

transforms into both the silver lupin X AND the golden patren X

catchphrase is “oh la la!” which he says when surprised/excited/intrigued

he’s both a phantom thief and an elite international police officer. it just works…somehow.

uses his mecha train to travel between japan and france in no time flat

older than he looks

does unnecessary acrobatic stunts for the hell of it (which his actor, seiya motoki, really does!)

wants the phantom thieves and police officers to be friends and work together instead of fighting

lowkey shipper on deck

(accidentally typed “lowkey shipper on dick”)

is he japanese? is he french? well that is just his own sweet and sexy secret

owns a shiny silver and gold kimono equally as awesome as akira’s in the gif above

tsukasa kadoya from kamen rider decade

he’s kamen rider decade

catchphrase is “i’m just a kamen rider passing through…remember that!”

his show is so weird and confusing but that’s okay because he’s cute and has an adorably bad attitude

always trying to take photos with the camera he carries. they always turn out looking shitty. he says it’s because the world is rejecting him, and not because he’s shitty at taking photos.

so he’s supposed to hop universes destroying worlds but he seems to just keep saving them instead

said worlds are extremely strange AUs of the first nine heisei kamen rider shows

anyway, back to tsukasa. he has a weird and sexy way of sitting which he did in front of black woz once which made him start doing it

actually his interactions with black woz in zi-o are memorably hilarious for both characters

every time tsukasa enters a new world, he automatically has a job that helps him fit in. in the kiva world, he’s a concert violinist–and boy, can he play. in the blade world, he’s the head chef of a cafeteria, and comes up with some great (if a little underhanded) methods of making money.

what the fuck is he even doing?

will i have the answer to that by the time i finish watching decade or nah?

regardless, he’s incredibly charming, and pleasant to watch

umika hayami from kaitou sentai lupinranger VS keisatsu sentai patranger

umika is secretly the super cute phantom thief lupin yellow!

she’s super cute and acts cheery but she’s got some intense sadness going on deep down which remains a secret to most people

waits tables at bistro jurer (the front for the lupinrangers)

i started watching lupat because she’s cute, even though i did not think i’d really get into super sentai

fellow lupinranger and bistro staff kairi pinches her nose just like how his older brother used to pinch his nose

…when umika turns it around and pinches kairi’s nose…when that happens you will want to cry, just sayin

one of the patrangers gets a big dumb crush on her, unaware that she’s actually a lupinranger (can you blame him?)

in the tradition of shinji kido he is cute, dumb, sweet, and bleaches his hair

can you believe this widdle bitty cutie pie grows up to become a megalomaniacal overlord subjecting humanity to a dark timeline of misery and woe??

at least, he might. he’d rather not. the time travelers from 2068 inform him that it’s a definite possibility.

Time for the Future Quizmaster and the Saviour

Zi-O: Once again Geiz's kindness gets in the way of what he's supposed to do, only here it's a good thing. While he's heard the prophecy of White Woz, he doesn't want it to come true because he now believes in Sougo, and so he tries to avoid the creation of the Quiz Miridewatch. It's not super clear to me if Mondo retains his memories or not, but nothing indicated he lost them. Can't really blame Geiz for forgetting the fact the Original can fight best against their Another Rider since we've only had once occasion where they coexisted long enough to come to blows before now. I'm not sure what was up with Geiz in the end, did he get changed somehow by the Miridewatches, or just stunned by the vision he saw. Either way, Black Woz has a scheme of his own. Something I will say about the two versions of Woz is, while being in theory the "evil" version, Black Woz seems less interested in controlling his master than White Woz, despite both disagreeing with things their master does, Black Woz has only tried to force Sougo's hand, while White Woz has forced Geiz to take the Miridewatches.

Lupinranger Vs Patranger: Sakuya believes Noel was being cruel when he encouraged the Jurer trio and the Tactical Unit to form friendships, but Noel has always wanted them to get along for real. And indeed, the friendships only really began to become real after Noel came along, with the Lupins being more and more guilty about the whole thing. The big deal though this episode, after the Lupins finally learn about the disguise issue, is all about Keiichiro and Kairi. Because throughout this adventure, these two have been the biggest obstacles to everyone working together. But they've changed. Keiichiro knows LupinRed is a good man because LupinRed is Kairi, and Kairi knows Keiichiro is a good man. Keiichiro being willing for forsake his being a detective to help Kairi is built on the speech he gave Tsukasa when they joined the Tactical Unit about their duty, only now he's prepared to give up the police for the sake of helping. Kairi's appreciation for Keiichiro is more understated, but the fact that he rejects Keiichiro's offer of help is the key here, recognising protecting people is more important.

With the new scans for LuPat, I can’t help but feel like the writers are sidelining the Patrangers, especially when it comes to the new VS vehicles. Do you happen to know why?

It definitely isn’t the writers’ fault. In fact, I have to commend Ms. Komura and her writing team for still making the Patrangers relevant in the series and giving them good focus episodes. Unfortunately, when writing a Sentai (and Kamen Rider) series, you aren’t given free reign of the story; you have to be able to fit in the new toys and work around what the higher-ups are telling you to do.

Basically, don’t blame the writers, blame Bandai for giving preference to the Lupinrangers.
