"FOR ALL MANKIND" SPOILER FREE REVIEW:

Watch it. Treat yourself. It's so damn good.

This is superb Character Driven Storytelling dressed up in a spacesuit. The writing is incredible.

If you're struggling with character motivations, this is a masterclass in taking a small, personal issue and spinning it up into an international incident one bad decision at a time. The plot is always personal.

For All Mankind also has some of the best female characters I've seen on TV. They get to be flawed yet relatable and compelling. The arcs for both Aleida and Margo Madison are fucking incredible. There are points where both women are totally unlikeable yet you are still rooting for them.

I'm reminded of Nana Visitor saying that when she first read the scripts for Kira all she could think was, "This is a man's character! They wrote her like a man!" And what a delight it was to play someone with that kind of depth.

Knowing that, it's no surprise that For All Mankind's creator and executive producer is Ron D. Moore, who wrote for Star Trek TNG and Deep Space Nine. The man loves his character driven space opera!

You want all the gay representation they couldn't overtly give you in DS9? For All Mankind has your back. You want complex issues with no single clean cut solution? Hoo boy are you in for a treat. You want character driven everything? OH GOD THE CHARACTERS! THEY ALL HAVE DEPTH!

Season 4 just wrapped up. This is a good time to sign up for 1 month of Apple TV+ and watch it all before canceling.

My baby daughter got her adorable puffin-print dress absolutely CAKED in mud crawling around the yard and my first thought was "oh no her beautiful dress"

And my second thought was "oh huh it really WOULD be easy to unconsciously steer her away from playing in the dirt. Unlike my son, whose outfits are usually some kind of solid dark easily washed pants plus a shirt that doesn't trail in the dirt like a dress does."

Anyway something something gender roles start getting shoved on kids from literal birth, but with a little time to think about things, YOU TOO can let your children of any gender absolutely destroy their clothes in the dirt pit they're digging in your garden

#all clothes provided through hand me downs and grandparents #we asked for non strongly gendered or branded things and that mostly worked for firstborn boy #but baby girl has gotten nothing but the cutest little dresses #that I am absolutely not going to stress if she destroys because it's not like they'll last until next summer anyway #at which point she'll be big enough for her brother's dirt-compatible pants #now if we can get her to stop EATING the dirt that would be GRAND #her pronouns are om/nom #literal definition of a baby

Forreal?''#(Meanwhile Robin is sweating bullets like ''I called his favorite vegetable a FRUIT right in his FACE he's going to KILL ME'')#Robin grew extra feet from the bottom of her feet to reach the counter and that actually isn't me trying to explain bad art away #In the original Papadile comic there was a panel of Robin doing the dishes with extra feet to reach the sink but I cut it out #(It was a stress relief comic I did not feel like drawing a complicated background in detail) (BUT YES I THOUGHT OF IT)#Nico Robin Age 11 is *more* than capable of cooking Crocodile just does not trust her with his food. At least not yet #She did start doing the dishes unprompted and continues to do so (mostly out of fear). Croc told her she didn't have to but allows it #IDK a lot of people seem to headcanon Crocodile as incapable of cooking and like. Surely Mr ''I don't trust people'' knows how to cook #Like he doesn't have to be a master chef or anything but and maybe he enjoys not HAVING to cook (pain in the ass with one hand + knife/hook #But surely he can cook decent enough. SURELY #Botanists don't @ me I know the ''tomato is a fruit'' thing isn't fully accurate this is just a silly little haha comic

absolutely adored dead boy detectives but god did it make me miss when we got more than 8 ep long shows like i love what we got and they did the best with the time they were given but there are so many things that could have been explored if the show had more time to breath

something about the first few episodes of the terror having so many numbers. the men, the provisions, the inventory; but also the tension of counting. the scene where goodsir takes a picture of john franklin and his men and he's counting down the seconds. the lashes being counted down during hickey's punishment. and something about how in later episodes, numbers get lost. dates get forgotten. counting just stops. all of it becomes insignificant. like it was a countdown at first but now the time is just running out instead

zero's pressure

#running out of gas. running out of money. out of time. out of energy. i'm running out of everything #and ofc my solution is to. avoid it. ignore it. do nothing productive.#zero's pressure turns into zero pressure #i'm trying to be kind to myself. i really have been trying. but it's hard when youre still headed to 0 on everything with no solution #because of yourself #i cant get a job. my art doesnt bring enough. i cant keep producing new products on the regular. i cant finish major comms on time #what CAN i do?#vent #just some adhd things #and maybe anxiety. and bad stress management #sorry for being so raw on main. its therapeutic even if it doesnt really lead to anything. it does force me to confront my feelings ig #i tend to get a burst of motivation after hitting a low like this but its a constant cycle that in the longterm really doesnt improve.#ill probably get some products done and do some quick comms. just one of those alone can cover gas for me #anyway some positivity to toot my own horn: i love the palette of this piece. went harder than i thought

At the start of this project all I wanted was to 'learn how to draw' using comics as a medium and the MDZS audio drama as inspiration.

I've come *very* far from making simple, 3 panel black and white comics, and I truly do intend to go even further. Thank you to everyone who cheered me on throughout 2023, it has been an incredible year in so many ways I never could have imagined. I look forwards to drawing throughout 2024 B*)

For all the work this blog has been-#-It has truly been a life saving anchor when the darkest of times have hit.#Love is hard work. Change is even harder work. Sticking to a goal I set out for myself and striving to keep going was worth it.#And I love drawing. I think there has always been something in me that longed for this. And it is finally tangible! I can draw!!!#I wanted to make a more elaborate year reflection where I looked back at my favourite comics and jokes.#but I'll leave that to the one year anniversary.#I have also been collecting a ton of statistics throughout the year and I am desperate to share them.
