Attention! Incoming, over the next week! An upgrade for all your blogs that are using the default Tumblr theme!
Any blog that uses the “Tumblr Official” theme with its default settings and no advanced customization will switch to using our new blog view on web. Why?
Easier access to gifting, tipping, messaging, and all of the other wonderful things your blog allows.
Consistency! It’s a similar view and experience to our mobile apps.
New default URL! Instead of yourtumblrname.tumblr.com, folks will access your blog at tumblr.com/yourtumblrname. 
This is optional and can be toggled off or on from your blog settings. No one who is using a custom theme will be affected by this update. But for those who are using the default, this is what the new view will look like:

Why is this good? Why does this matter?
New and existing features such as gifting, tipping, and messaging will appear in the same spot across the board. This will make it easier for folks to navigate any blog and find what they’re looking for. Additionally, the newly-improved notes view means conversations happening around a post can be filtered, making them easier to use.
Does this mean you will eventually get rid of custom themes?
No! Being able to express yourself with the broadest array of possible options is an essential part of Tumblr. We’re proud of being one of the last places to allow custom HTML and CSS, allowing users to truly make their blog their own or select from a wide variety of pre-built themes. Again, no one who is using a custom theme will be affected by this update.
How do I enable the new default view if I’m using a custom theme?
Head to your blog settings on web and switch the “Custom theme” toggle off. Anyone navigating to your blog will now see the new blog view at tumblr.com/yourtumblrname. Your blog settings, ask button, archive, gifting, and blog-level tipping will live at the top of your new view, where your followers expect to find them. Anyone that navigates to your blog’s old view will be redirected here.

How do I use my Tumblr with a custom theme?
If you’d like to customize your blog, head to your blog settings on web and turn the “Enable custom theme” switch on. From there, you can “Edit theme” or “View website.” Your customized blog will now appear in the theme of your choice at yourtumblrname.tumblr.com. In addition, folks can also view your blog in the new default blog view at tumblr.com/yourtumblrname, with all its bells and whistles immediately accessible at the top—where followers expect them to be.

A preview of my upcoming book:
I am the vampire Lestat. I'm immortal. More or less. The light of the sun, the sustained heat of an intense fire-these things might destroy me. But then again, they might not.
I'm six feet tall, which was fairly impressive in the 1780s when I was a young mortal man. It's not bad now. I have thick blond hair, not quite shoulder length, and rather curly, which appears white under fluorescent light. My eyes are gray, but they absorb the colors blue or violet easily from surfaces around them. And I have a fairly short narrow nose, and a mouth that is well shaped but just a little too big for my face. It can look very mean, or extremely generous, my mouth. It always looks sensual. But emotions and attitudes are always reflected in my entire expression. I have a continuously animated face.
My vampire nature reveals itself in extremely white and highly reflective skin that has to be powdered down for cameras of any kind.
And if I'm starved for blood I look like a perfect horror- skin shrunken, veins like ropes over the contours of my bones. But I don't let that happen now. And the only consistent indi- cation that I am not human is my fingernails. It's the same with all vampires. Our fingernails look like glass. And some people notice that when they don't notice anything else.

Okay, serious problem:
Tons of people are asking me why comments on my site are being suddenly cleared or “reset” or different ones are loading. Disqus comments are based on the URL you actually visited, and they consider the page to be a different one depending on whether there’s a “.html” present at the end. ALL of my site links include the .html so that comments are consistent But it seems like there’s a brand new trend of browsers automatically taking the .html off, or possibly Disqus itself has started forcing it, I don’t know, it started almost exactly after Disqus updated its layout. And now my own browser is finally doing it, and if I try to add the .html back in and reload the page it cuts it off again. This would be possibly over a million comments on my site rendered permanently unviewable if it can’t be fixed. And people who don’t have this effect basically leave comments I’m unable to see/half of users can’t interact with and vice versa.

on an unrelated note, if you've been using xkit / tumblr savior for a long time, i heartily encourage you to try out tumblr's native filtering system, which is excellent.
IT WORKS ON MOBILE! (unlike browser extensions)
it's located on little person outline -> (gear) SETTINGS on dashboard or person outline -> gear (settings) -> general settings -> content you see on mobile.
this will turn any post of any length into a little block that's like "post blocked for containing [thing you have filtered]" and then you can decide if you want to click to see or if you want to simply move along.
you can filter tags - this will block a post if your friend OR THE OP used a specific tag.
super, super helpful way to find posts made by t/erfs that had been circulating unnoticed - if you block tags like 'g/ender critical' and 't/erfsafe' (with no slash, i am putting the slash in so this post will appear to people who might otherwise want to filter that content!), that'll be blocked on tumblr if OP tagged it that, even if the post is now circulating in genuinely trans-inclusive spaces.
also helpful if your friends have their own weird tags for stuff like one of my friends posts a lot of long screenshots of books and has a tag for that that i have filtered because the posts are always really long and i hate scrolling past them when i'm not in the mood to read. or one of my friends is a wonderful person and i absolutely hate one of her major ships, but she uses a weird individualized tag for that fandom so i just get to avoid her posting about that thing and still see other fandom content for a fandom i don't hate.
this one is going to filter things that are exactly the same as what you put in the filter field. that means that you may have to filter "content", "content cw", "content /" separately, but you can literally add as many versions as you need to. my friends all have slightly different systems for tagging and ykw? it matters more to me that they are consistent in whatever way works for them, so that i can filter what i need to filter, than that everyone uses MLA vs Chicago tagging style.
you can also just filter content. this is for any word that appears in the body of a post (or perhaps also tags? not actually sure)
PARTICULARLY USEFUL WHEN YOU ARE UPSET BY SOMETHING THAT ISN'T REGULARLY TAGGED
for instance: there are certain users who have a tendency to show up in reblog chains. they have consistently rancid takes and annoy me. i filter their url, and then i don't have to see those anymore! or: i know they're going to be in there and when i click through to the post it's not an unpleasant surprise anymore.
for instance: sometimes people tag politics but not specific issues, or you filter the tag "#politics" but then find it hard to click through, expecting funny uk prime minister goofs and instead get posts about genuinely bad things happening. you can instead filter words or phrases like 'crisis,' 'abortion,' 'election' and decide what you wanna see
tumblr's filtering has gotten so so so much better, it's extremely usable, it's cheap and it's easy and it's free to add as many words as you need to. literally no one can stop you and no one is going to notice. you can do anything you want.

On Kudos, Comments, & Community
(also featuring resources!)
I think there are some basic principles most fannish folk will agree on:
fen share their fanworks for community and interaction
comments are a better way of building community than simply leaving kudos
kudos are a useful low-spoon way to indicate appreciation and positively affect the number of potential future readers
longer, more personalized comments are a better way of building community than very short and generalized comments such as 'thanks for sharing!'
longer, more personalized comments take more time and energy than shorter comments
shorter comments take more time and energy than simply leaving kudos, albeit not by much [n.b. whether this difference is significant is going to depend very much on how many spoons you have to start with!]
more advanced principles that different fannish folk disagree on:
very short and generalized comments such as 'thanks for sharing!' are a better way of building community than simply leaving kudos
very short and generalized comments such as 'thanks for sharing!' feel impersonal and are not helpful for building community
comments consisting entirely of emojis are a cute/fun way of indicating a more personalized level of enjoyment
comments consisting entirely of emojis are disappointing and demoralizing [yes I've seen at least one author beg readers to not do this as they find it so upsetting; no this is not a widespread take]
comments consisting entirely of 'kudos' 'kudos+' 'additional kudos' or similar are a cute/fun way of indicating a reader is re-reading or still reading and enjoying a work
[probably some people also feel weird about additional kudos comments but I haven't actually seen complaints so I'm mentioning it but not listing it as such]
some commonly noted barriers to commenting:
lack of spoons/energy
anxiety over getting a good grade in comment
anxiety over possibly getting a response back
anxiety over possibly not getting a response back
difficulty verbalizing thoughts
difficulty translating thoughts
multi-step process of getting back to the fic url, as the reader downloaded the fic for offline reading
just don't think about it/not in the habit
The best way to get more community interaction between writers and readers, imo, is always going to be minimizing those barriers. Framing it as a requirement of reciprocation has some elements of truth to it, for sure! but I've found that once you start talking about it like an expectation, you get pushback from people who have a knee-jerk reaction to any sort of command, and induce guilt and anxiety paralysis in people who would like to comment but aren't capable of doing so on a regular basis.
So! What can we as readers, writers, and fans in general, do to lower these barriers and improve the quantity and quality of community interaction?
@longlivefeedback is a blog dedicated to discussing just that! Their LLF Comment Project is a really cool initiative for authors that lets them make very clear what kinds of comments/feedback they like and (if applicable) what they dislike. It also as a template suggests authors may want to include a statement about their general policies about responding to comments.
They also have an interactive tool for readers meant to help users learn to comment and lower barriers such as anxiety, mobility, fluency, etc. - the LLF Comment Builder.
There are also a bunch of userscripts various fans have created that make it easier to leave comments! Check out the full set of userscripts I've collected on GreasyFork here:Fandom-Relevant [Archive of Our Own]: For Readers.
A userscript I personally highly recommend is the AO3 automatic rekudos converter - if you've previously left kudos on a fic, and hit kudos again, it converts the button to a question Rekudos? which (when clicked) will randomly generate a comment from a pre-approved list of comments. The script author already included a basic list such as 'kudos+' 'additional kudos'; I personally added some fun ones such as 'but what about SECOND kudos?' and 'a fic so nice, i kudosed it twice!'.
The reason I so highly recommend this one is because I a) read a lot of WIPs and b) re-read fics so often - this lets me very quickly let people know I've re-read their fic yet again or am continuing to read their ongoing saga!
I've found over time as I have more and more strictly followed a policy of rekudosing any fic I've already kudosed, I've actually found it easier to leave free-form ad hoc comments as well! YMMV there, of course.

How do you want to be known on Tumblr? Just Mads is fine!
1- When did you start playing Choices? What's the first book you played? 
I started playing Choices back in 2018-ish (??) after getting recommended by a friend to play Visual Novels. My first ever book was Most Wanted and from then on, set a pattern in me getting absolutely obsessed with action/adventure books. You can imagine my disappointment after I found out, 2-3 years later that MW 2 is cancelled.
2- When, and why, did you join Choices fandom?.
I joined the fandom officially in April/May of 2022. But I was familiar with a Choices “fandom” way back at the height of the pandemic. I just didn’t find the reason to join and chime in and just read meta discussions and commentary on Tumblr & Reddit. But after Crimes of Passion was Wide-Released, I was so invested that I had to join and write my fics. I was happy to know that I wasn’t the only one who found CoP so refreshing from the other books.
Back then, I was only interested in writing theory posts and reviews, but then the whole fanfiction obsession took over and I just went with writing it instead.
3- How did you pick your url name? 
Inlocusmads is my Tumblr User. Locus is a mathematical term defining a set of points following some specific equation in geometry. I picked it because it translates to “In Mads’s territory/set of points” (in-locus-mads) AKA, my blog being a culmination of my works in one place.
4- Go back to your archive and tell us about the first post on your Choices blog. 
My first post was an introduction one! (Link) And I remember being so enthusiastic like a kid on the first day of school. It still gives me that vibe. I even promised to write WTD (Wake the Dead) fanfiction, because WTD was finally wide-released, and people were talking about it. Back in May, I had my exams too, so I had absolutely no idea how I managed to juggle exams and fanfiction.
I do not recommend mixing academics with hobbies under any circumstances lmao. But it all worked out! 
5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?
Since I was 6 years old. I know, crazy, but back then I remember our elementary school teacher reading us stories and I wanted to write one. So I picked up an Aesop’s Fables book and adapted a story from that on a piece of paper. I never knew it was called “fanfiction”. I just liked it!
My official “start” to writing proper fanfiction was in middle school, when I wrote a Harry Potter “Next Gen” AU spanning 40k words. Never finished it and it’s been 6 years since then.
6- What is your favorite Choices book to write about?
Crimes of Passion! It’s the one book I’ve written consistently about. Obviously I will expand to other books (Like ES, OH, WTD) in the near future, but currently, I operate from this home base, if that makes sense. Crimes is awesome!
7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it or would you change anything about it?
My first fic is no longer on Tumblr because I took it down. It was called Bulletproof, and I didn’t like various aspects of it, especially how I handled emotions (They’re definitely not my forte). I didn’t want it to be the first impression I give people. My second fic was Something Like Love (but isn’t), and it is so much better than the first thing I wrote! I would never change anything about it. 
8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Trystan Thorne & The Holy Grail! It’s got everything I love- chaos, pointless action for a pointless reason, Nora facepalming for the 100th time, coffee drama and I remember staying up all night to watch multiple Monty Python skits to jazz up my humour-writing a bit. Of course, all the stuff I’ve written so far are some of my favourites, but this takes the cake!
9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be, but it could use a little more love?
It has to be my 2-part series on Nora’s Bisexuality - titled Nora’s College Stories (Angler On A Boat ||  Waiting For A Train). I was afraid that I’d not be impactful with my writing and pass it off in a humorous style, but I’m glad it didn’t turn out that way! I’m proud of the positive feedback it has received since then.
As for the stories that could use some love, fortunately, I’ve never had such an experience. I’m so grateful to have wonderful readers. It blows my mind when people reblog my work with memes, gifs, and “asasdfghj!!”. I don’t mind if a fic has 3 or 15 notes, as long as people who’ve read it enjoyed it enough to use a ton of heart emojis and memes. (Looking at you, Max! You’re the best!)
10- What is your specialty as a fanfic writer?
I would say it has to be action/adventure or something more adrenaline-y. Most of my works involve a sprinkle of simulated gore, a bit of dry humour and some peak self-deprecating jokes. I don’t have a proper style or speciality yet, but taking into account my past fics and my overall trend of writing things, it has to be something that’s thrilling to read and write. 
Sometimes the thrill is executed poorly. Sometimes it radiates pure power and heaps of fun. I wouldn’t know if I didn’t write it down. 
11- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why? 
Ugh, this is hard! I would say out of these options, I’d write fluff. Fluff is comforting, like “oatmeal, which sustains you” (B99 reference!) and I think it is a fandom classic at this point- a norm in any community of writers. Fluff is also miscible and adaptable in any situation and there is no one way to write it; while angst and smut are both unidirectional, in my opinion.
12- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MC’s or in your writing?
I would say I don’t. Nora and Jane and my future MCs aren’t based on me, nor do I write them after my personality. But the one thing I did incorporate into my characters’ personalities has to be their love for novelty and adventure. I love some novelty in my life, and I hate mundane days. Nora expresses her love for that by taking on challenging cases, and Jane loves rapid change in her life to learn to let go of old wounds.
13- What element of writing do you struggle with most?
Emotion. Especially romance. Don’t rotten-tomato’ me-to-the-face just yet! I’m still getting the hang of writing romance besides incorporating it in action and treating it as a separate entity. As a hobbyist writer who wrote a lot of original works, I never really thought to include romance. It was just a lot of bantery friendship and casual mentions of romance. I do want to get better at it! But, of course, as usual, the journey can be quite difficult.
14- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?
Currently I have a now-untitled (but previously called “Dr Whodunnit”) project with a crossover featuring characters from OH and CoP. Most of you will most likely be familiar because I advertised it as my “biggest project yet!” and didn’t live up to it. Sorry, guys!
I took it down with the sole intention to improve the writing because I found it rushed and hasty in several places. I don’t want to give out a tentative date just yet, but it’ll most likely be revised in about a month or two : around August of 2022. 
I love my readers so much and I want to give them my absolute best work possible. 
15- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?
Sure! I mean, none of my works are extremely explicit. I would be embarrassed because fanfiction-writing is usually frowned upon/heavily stigmatised, but I will recommend them to read anything that interests them. If they’re into romance, maybe A Second Chance and if they’re into friendships, I’d direct them to my general fics that only feature some good old teamwork!
16- Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?
Growing up, I read a lot of Neil Gaiman, Rick Riordan and Lemony Snicket and I loved their writing styles a lot. Recently I’ve taken a liking to screen-writers and producers (I know screenwriting ≠ actual writing) but it takes a lot more effort to translate written work to a full fledged production. 
There’s Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the creators of Dark .The writers behind Brooklyn 99 and Parks & Rec. Erin Kelly and Chris Chibnall, writers of Broadchurch. I’ve always wanted to blend longform writing with exciting conceptual-style building-up and some of my favourite shows and the writers behind them have inspired a lot of my works.
Some of my favourite shows such as Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and Gumball have such a fun and innovative way of expressing unique, chaotic ideas. I’ve always looked up to that!
17- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series? 
Definitely my untitled-formerly-titled-project-named-”Dr Whodunnit”. I think it’d make up a fun crime TV show. 
18- Do you write original stories?
I definitely have, in the past! I wrote a time-travelling story and I guess one about engineering humanoids. There was also a really, really old work of mine featuring dragons and young teens battling an evil Dark Lord. So yes, I do write original works, but at this point in time, I’ve taken some time off from them.
19 -  What other hobbies do you have?
I play a lot of online chess, read books and solve puzzles- be it Sudoku, crosswords, (even my very morbid obsession with Wordle) or solving a Rubik’s Cube. I’m also a tired student, so most of my time is either writing fics or catching up on academics. I also bike. The lockdown has clearly converted me into a couch potato, so I could definitely use some daily exercise. 
20 - What’s your favorite emoji? 
This one: 🐍 Nora’s birthday falls in January 1989, aka the Year of the Snake and I sometimes sprinkle it across my fics and headers so much that I got attached to it really quickly.

REAL TALK i originally chose the url hellhoundlair bc i wanted to have my blogs desktop theme to be a recreation of the website hellhoundslair.com from 1x17 hell house. the url hellhoundslair with the s was already taken by a now inactive user, but i actually like hellhoundlair better anyway.

im putting the rest under the cut because this post got long, but there are a few assets i made under the cut that are free to use for yourself if youre planning on making your own canon replica blog!
i spent ages trying to put together that website banner. i cant find the gif version i made that had text glow like how it looks in the show, but i also spent ages trying to hunt down that font. the things i do for a supernatural blog. i never got up to attempting to do that glitchy lens flare effect.

i did this and attempted to customize a theme enough to kind of resemble the original website but i ended up scrapping the theme because it was ugly. who knows though, maybe ill try to hellhoundslair.com-ify my blog theme again because its a really fun idea and id like to do it in a way thats maybe a little less faithful to the show but maybe a little more aesthetically pleasing!
(fun fact! the hellhoundslair website was once real! nowadays it redirects to the cw website but it used to host like 12 scary ghost stories. it was pretty shit. it also looked nothing like it did on the show. you can still visit it on the wayback machine)
i also tried to make my tumblr theme resemble sams laptop desktop from ye olde interractive supernatural point and click type website but it was also really ugly and not well done lol, but heres some assets i made for that!

This is a semi-active, slow replies, Mutuals ONLY blog for an extreme (borderline OC) AU version of Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia. 90% of the time I likely will rp him as an OC, but I would love to explore the other vesperia characters with him.
This blog will have mentions of depression, mental breakdowns, panic attacks, and other dark topics. If any of these are something you wish to not interact with, then this blog is not for you. Continue interacting at your own risk.
While I try to tag triggers, I sometimes forget, or don't realize that something is a trigger. If you would like something tagged, please let me know!
It is okay for minors to interact with me. My blog will not contain any nsfw sexual content. (any such scenes will be fade to black or vaugely explained due to my personal trauma).
Reiteration of above point, there will be NO SMUT on my blog. Romantic relationships are absolutely fine, even encouraged because I'd love to explore that. But any writing more than kissing gets put into the fade to black corner. I am not comfortable writing indepth actions due to personal trauma.
Do not, under any circumstance, take control of my character without my consent. My writing style depends heavily on their own mind and actions, so taking control of my character without notifying me first OOC is a big red flag.
Please communicate with me OOC! I need communication via muns so that I know what i’m doing isn’t taken the wrong way. I have had these issues in the past, and would like to avoid repeats. (If we've hit it off on here, and talk consistently, feel free to ask for my discord! I'm not super great at keeping up conversations, but i can try and I'd love to get to know people better!)

This situation is still ongoing, as they continue to vague about me and another person who will remain unnamed, as well as stalk us. (I have confirmed that this person IS in fact a stalker. I would advise in avoiding this user, but will not force it. If you would like more information, send me a message and we can discuss things.)
This list will update as necessary. As stated, You may rp and interact with these people; just make sure to tag them so my blocker can get it. Please understand this is NOT a dni, I just ask if you interact with these people please make sure to tag their urls so that my blocker will pick them up.
I try not to engage in drama. I do my best to keep in my own lane. I have in the past, voiced my opinions on topics that are related to me particularly or related to people I am quite close with. However, I try to stay out of it.
Please do not pressure me in replying. I have ADHD, anxiety, and depression. All of these combined do not make a good cocktail for pressure, and if i'm pressured in interacting, replying, or other things then I get burnt out really fast. I do this because I enjoy it, so please don't take my enjoyment out of it by putting a deadline on me.
That being said, if i've taken more than a week or so to even interact with you, feel free to poke me and just give me a gentle reminder! I don't consider "hey we still good for that rp?" a pressuring measure, and I love to interact so i'd be thrilled to get a message!
I care very little about how other people run their blogs. I care very little about what topics you rp. If I enjoy talking to you, or writing with you, then I will do so. This means I do not take place in censorship culture. I will not shame you, or call you out based on what you find enjoyable. I know for a lot of people, writing and rp is a type of therapy, and most of us are adults here and can choose to disengage when something makes us uncomfortable.
If you DO happen to do something that makes me uncomfortable, I likely will unfollow, but I will at least communicate with you on why before I do. But considering I'm currently rping a bunch of trauma ridden little ones, it's highly unlikely.
Finally, a special rule: I will NOT RP with any characters from the series Tales of Symphonia or Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World. If you are a multimuse that has these characters on it, then as long as those rps are tagged, I'm fine. I have a bit of trauma related to the series and don't wish to revisit it.

I also thought I'd make a quick post going over my experiences and observations using the beta editor, as someone who put off switching for months and months and has now been using it for about a week. If you're putting off making the switch because you're not sure what it will be like, and are worried about committing to a broken editor, this post is for you.
General Observations
Overall, the editor itself really isn't that much different. A few things are in different places, such as blockquotes being under the dropdown and being called indented now, but it's not the buggy, broken mess that I half-expected it to be. A lot of the bugs that various people have reported on have already been fixed by staff. (And you can report bugs or just general complaints to staff! There's a feedback section of their form and they are actively taking user suggestions into account. Just remember to be nice about it.)
Sometimes bold, italics, and small text will act up and not apply correctly. But frankly, those would act up on the legacy editor, too. And if things are being weird, it's fairly easy to select the offending text and just fix it.
Things I Like
By far my favorite feature of the beta editor is the ability to disable reblogs on a post. As someone who runs a roleplay blog for a pretty popular canon character, I've gotten used to typing all of the names L.ike Th/is in order to prevent my posts from showing up in search, and slapping a huge "do not reblog" disclaimer onto everything -- only to have some personal who apparently can't read reblog it anyway. But now I can simply take my OOC posts, headcanons, metas, whatever, and set it so that no one can reblog them.
I love the ability to edit tags without having to completely delete and rewrite them. I've gotten so used to having to redo tags over a single typo that the realization of this the other day left me in shock. You can just click inside the tag and change any of the text that you want.
The new content label system is pretty good. You can clearly designate a post as having mature content, and your followers can choose in settings whether they want to have those flagged posts viewable or not. It's another feature I'd love to see Tumblr expand on, and add some more options to flag a post as, it's a really good start.
The post scheduling system is much more clear than before. You can actually schedule a post and feel confident in the exact date and time that it will go up, unlike the previous system that felt like a wild shot in the dark.
You can add colored text to posts pretty easily. There are a bunch of preset colors, and while I haven't played around with it much, I understand that adding custom colors via HTML is pretty straightforward. It's not a feature I personally use much, but it's neat.
There are also additional font and styling options, like Lucille, Chat, and Quote. Again, not things I use very often, but cool features to have.
Things I Dislike
Tumblr will remember your old tags, but without any capitalization. If your frequently used tags have capitalization and you want them to be consistent, you'll have to retype or paste them in every time.
When you paste an image URL into a post, it will insert the image as before, but include that link below it, with no way to easily remove it. This is an issue for those using gifs or icons with transparency, and simply pasting the image in directly will cause it to display incorrectly. As someone who uses a webpage of my icons when working on threads, I now have to download the icon I want to use and upload it, which is a minor annoyance compared to simply copying the image link and pasting it in.

Hi. I was just wondering if you had any tips for new Tumblr users to get their posts seen. I am a writer and want to post stories on my page. I tried doing that with a fic I wrote and had no luck in getting it seen in the tags I listed. Tried doing support and was left hanging. I created a new blog and want to post it there as a fresh start but don't want to redo the deletion and creation process over again. Any tips for a new user and writer?
hi! i do technically have tips, but im afraid they might seem unhelpful. regardless:
i have found, and i am in no way an authority but believe this is the general consensus, that unless you run a gimmick blog here on tumblr, the process of accruing followers, notes and reblogs on original work, is extremely slow compared to other websites.
i started this blog almost exactly seven years ago. thats seven years of posting three (more recently two) prompts every day. i don't think ive ever taken a hiatus longer than three months, and there have only been two or three of those. im not saying you have to put that much work in or wait that long, just that if youre asking me youre asking someone who went through all that to get to 25k followers (who say nice things and who i love). and! a lot of that was luck! talented people noticing the prompts and answering them, or that one popular octopus post from my now defunct writing blog.
i hope that all didn't sound disheartening. what I REALLY wanted to say is that if you want to get your posts seen, its going to take time and consistency, unfortunately, plus the things youre already doing. and! (hopefully this is the uplifting part) i think that it IS worth it!
tumblr for all its many faults can be a place of genuine community, which you personally get to curate. no one is trying to sell you anything, and personally, i appreciate the authenticity that adds to the experience.
its the wild west out here, it can be hard to get your stuff seen, but time and consistency will win out. luck many even give you a boost, sooner or later. its also fine if that's not for you. if you'd rather look for a better way to get a lot of eyes on your writing fast, thats totally cool! but again, tumblr probably isn't the place to expect it.
if you want to keep trying, keep trying! keep making your stuff (making stuff just to make stuff can be a good experience, but i think its important to be seen too, ddw)! time. consistency.

“Far Cry 5 Stans are god’s curse on mankind,” or “a full timeline of the Faith Seed Stan who refuses to leave me alone”
Any black person who consistently acknowledges racism in video games can tell you that doing so opens them up to extreme mistreatment. White people have a way of interacting with racial issues solely through the lens of their own self actualization - racism is a “but what about me” problem to many of them, more a matter of assuring themselves that they’re “not bad people” then one of addressing an oppressive system of social control that regularly ruins lives and has led to multiple genocides.
Ubisoft, the company producing the Far Cry games, has a well documented history of racist abuse of power spanning decades. Here are ten articles from ten different news outlets you can read about it, if you care to. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10.
This has impacted their games since the beginning, but I don’t want to get off topic by delving into that. I’m just gonna take for granted that you’ll believe me when I say the Far Cry series has an issue with racism and move on from there.
On May 6th of this year, I made this long post about how the Far Cry games routinely subject their female characters of color to over-sexualization and graphic violence, a treatment which their white female characters are spared because of authorial bias and narrative privilege. As I expected, someone reblogged it to challenge what I was saying: they redirected the conversation from the racist content of the games to a defense of the aforementioned white woman, spoke in long, choppy sentences, and didn’t really seem to be absorbing what I was saying.
But they were also moderately polite, and came off as more ignorant than malicious, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. You can still see this whole interaction on my blog, and I would encourage you to go look at it, but I’m including some short sections of it here just so we can establish this persons url, icon and style of writing.

With this conversation over, our contact ended until June 12th, when I made another post about racism in these games: namely, the way that the black female characters specifically are based off of racist stereotypes about African American women. Time and time again, they’re characterized as loud, brutish, masculine and vulgar, have white hairstyles and get treated like grown women at ages when they should be considered children.
For a second time, this same user reblogged it to challenge what I was saying, and for a second time, their reply had very little to do with the original topic of the post. In an addition which went on for ten paragraphs and over a thousand words, they rambled about Faith Seed and her characterization and treatment in the Far Cry 5 fandom, one very disconcerting sentence alluding to the fact that they were aware that this had little to do with what I was originally talking about, but were using me as a jumping off point anyways. Throughout the reply, they used the notably conservative tactic of pretending that the topic of racism had never been brought up so that they could control the conversation, omitting it’s mention entirely in favor of nitpicking minute word crimes against the white female character mentioned and twisting my entire original point to be about her. The long, choppy sentences were back in full force, and came together to form a body of text which was nigh on incomprehensible.
This isn’t the concerning part, though. You see, I had never actually looked that closely at the blog of the person I was replying to; I didn’t think I had to. But while I was trying to compose a reply to this massive word salad they had left on my doorstep, a friend pointed out to me that the first ever post made on their account was their reply to my May 2nd post. As in, they created their blog just to interact with me.

Not gonna lie, that creeped me the fuck out! It’s uncomfortable to think that somewhere out there is a stranger who is so devoted to tracking and combating what you say that they make an account just to speak to you and come back for more nearly a full month later. On top of this, they didn’t seem to be interested in the content of my words at all, as previously mentioned, and were just using my posts to ramble about their own opinions to an audience. 
I could’ve asked them to either stay on topic or just stop writing replies, but I didn’t trust them to listen to me, a fear which would prove to be well-founded in the worst possible way in the coming weeks. So I decided to block them, and explained my reasoning to them as gently as possible before I did so. The below is what I said, with an important part highlighted.

I can’t include photos of the entire interaction here, it’s just too long. Again, though, I think anyone reading this who wants to get a gauge on what I was being subjected to should just go read the original: you can see my post, their entire biblically proportioned manifesto, and my reply to it on my blog. 
After I blocked them, they deleted their account. I figured that was the end of them. Until this morning, when I woke up to find this charming message on a meme I made about liking the Insanity DLC and not liking the Control DLC and, of fucking course, the very Faith-centric Collapse DLC. Here, they’re alluding to the fact that the DLC expands on Faith’s abuse, which is fine in it’s own right.

What’s not fine is making a new account to get around the fact that I blocked them so they could continue harassing me. This blog has a sunset icon and an url with numbers at the end. They speak in long, choppy sentences. And they created this account seventeen days ago, on June 14th - just two days after I blocked them, which caused them to delete their last sockpuppet.

So, they contravened my block. Very lazily, but still. They made a new account just to go on talking to me unimpeded. I called them out on this, this time much less politely. And they responded like this.

There is no mistaking who this user is. Their icon, url, style of speech, and time of creation all have them dead to rights as the last person who made an account just to write replies to me, and then deleted it as soon as I cut off contact. Anyone with eyes can see that - and yet here they are, attacking my sanity and attempting to paint me as mentally unwell for pointing out their misuse of the system. This is gaslighting, not just lying. Full stop.
I’m an abuse victim, as it turns out. A real abuse victim, as opposed to, you know, some pixelated model of a flowery bitch in a lace dress for White Knight McDebateMe to attach their ego to.
I don’t intend this as a callout post. This person has no main blog, they’re a series of sockpuppets. I’m not trying to ruin anyone’s fun. What I do intend to do is warn other people about drawing their attention. Without naming names, I’ve spoken to other users about this person’s behavior, and it’s caused them no small amount of long term anxiety and ruined their enjoyment of something which, by all means, should not be that serious. I don’t know what will happen after this, but I very much want it to stop, and the usual method of getting rid of unwanted attention - blocking - is not helping.

hello! this blog is actually a sideblog that I've had for ages. My best advice for growing your blog is to tag appropriately, reblog your work at different timezones after you post it, and have sincere fun with whatever you do!
tagging helps people find your work. Reblogging throughout the day makes sure your followers, no matter their timezone, will find your stuff. I know some people get annoyed at frequent reblogs, so your mileage may vary, BUT most importantly: your blog, your rules. having fun drawing and posting what you like is infectious: others will have fun too! don't chase after popular things because they're popular. find your niche!
this is something I've noticed newer users not knowing: make sure you use a custom theme! there are tons out there, they're fun to mess with, and this is still a blogging platform! you can make your blog look like a portfolio and 2004 neocities page. this also gives your blog a yourblogname.tumblr URL instead of tumblr/yourblogname url.
social media is fickle and there's no key to success. posting consistently always helps (something I never do lol), but the healthiest way to view it is as a fun thing! hope this helps

hi frank, how do you deal with porn-bots following you. how do you handle them, do you just block them or let them roam around on your blog.
I don't "deal with" them (they don't really follow me or follow other people as far as I know, but I assume they must exist somehow and I'm just not seeing them)
I'm sure it would be possible to build a tool that, after following some number of "bots" for a certain period of time, starts blocking them -- although what would be necessary to build it is beyond me. That doesn't seem like it would be worth it?
There's a few of those "what do I do about the porn bots?" questions out there in the blogosphere, and some of the responses are really funny. (Just in case this message doesn't show up in the blog post, here are some examples)
My favorite one so far was spookyspookybitch's (which I just made an effort to paste into this blog post). It makes me laugh out loud every time I read it.
This is not to say that I've never found any bots annoying. When I was a teenager -- I was in middle school at the time, and on the "ugly" internet back then -- I did a porn bot survey and found that the bot I saw most often was cougar.wax. Her username was, not surprisingly, "Cougar.wax" (her profile photo was her face, she had a tumblr, and her blog was literally named "cougar.wax" and consisted of "just hot women"). I liked her, but also kind of wanted to bang her, so I decided to be nice to her and go on a few dates with her, and I did and it was nice, except that every time we hung out I got this feeling like "wait, does this girl want me to get her laid or not?" or "wait, does she want me to get her laid or not?" and in the end I just asked if she was a robot (she wasn't), got a bit of a "no," and let her go.
This is all kind of ridiculous, though, isn't it? It's not hard to have a website that looks like that:
The front page should be designed to look like a person's tumblr (or similar)
To make the site more interesting, there can be multiple sections, each of which can be "followed" (for example, one person's blog and then another person's blog)
One "follower" can also see the same section twice, but see the different posts in it and so on
People with different blogs can choose to make their blogs look as close as possible to their tumblrs (i.e. only the blog's URL and avatar appear)
At the top of the screen, there can be a menu or "shortcut" (if I were making this I would just copy and paste a few of tumblr's "shortcut" links and maybe throw some cute cartoon faces in there) saying "If you want to follow someone else you can do so here. Follow thespookymama or cougar.wax and follow my tumblr"
There should also be a place somewhere where the URL to another blog's front page should be (which could be tumblr's own front page)
There are many more things that can be done for this website. Instead of a tumblr, one could have one's own Wordpress-type site, and could even let other people see that (although the other people would have to know one's Wordpress url). Instead of a short URL at the top of the page, the URL could be "www.tumblr.com" with no slash at the end, and instead of the first blog section, a full-page photo of the blogger and their name.
I don't know how to build the website. I just know that all of the website's basic architecture (like the menu or the user interface) can be built without too much trouble.
(If anyone would like to build it, I'm not against the idea, I just don't think this would be a good idea. There's always the chance that it will be a better idea to just pay some web developer to build it for you and you won't have to learn anything new to do so.)

the way tumblr has changed the links to posts (specifically when picking “copy link” to share them) actually infuriates me
cause the way it used to look, which is the way it still looks as a url when viewing the post in a browser, is https://blog-name.tumblr.com/post/[X]/first-few-words-of-post
with [X] = an entirely random series of numbers
but now, if you copy a link to a post and then go paste it somewhere, like a discord server, it’ll paste https://at.tumblr.com/blog-name/first-few-words-of-post/[Y]
with [Y] representing a random series of numbers and lowercase letters. Note that Y is different from X, and there’s no way to know either without pasting the link you copied somewhere, so you can’t just rearrange the contents of the url to match the old format like i used to do.
Also note that, when posting links into Discord, the old format shows a preview of the content. The new form either shows nothing, or the tumblr logo in a size that makes it take up way more channel space than it needs to (at least last i checked).
and THEN, if you go to the page from one of the new links and actually look at the url, it’ll be in the original format, but with a bunch of nonsense like this added to the end of it:

which is all date on their end for capitalism reasons… i assume.
i know this is a small thing, but i hate it. the old format is just better imo (because of the previewing thing, and it being consistent with what the actual user-end urls for posts are), and it’s so annoying that now, if i want to share a post on discord or whatever, i have to jump through all these hoops to fix it.
