I'm in a 400-level Artificial Intelligence course and we spent half of the class struggling with basic addition. And I mean humans looking over graphs and such and struggling with addition. No AI needed for bad math. I had to pull out a calculator for 9+3.

you have $100. due to a squid games type escapade, you are currently trapped in Whole Foods and can't leave or someone will take you out with a bullet to the brain. you have to buy all the food you eat. you can't shoplift it or steal it from the other competitors. a carton of 12 organic eggs costs $10.
your friend Greg has $100. due to a competing squid games franchise, he is trapped in a Costco. he can't leave, or they'll set the dogs on him. he still has to buy all the food he eats. he can buy 36 eggs for $7
which one of you will starve first? are you or Greg functionally "wealthier" within your respective squid game?

In the 6th grade Nikita was enrolled in a math class. But he didn't gravitate towards science.
Marina Lytkina recalls: "The teacher had no pedagogical education, she's a programmer. And she interacted with the children as if they were students, she didn't explain anything to them. She corrected mistakes in the notebooks and said that they should have listened in class. People have never understood that he's not like everyone else: he will never ask for anything, always silent. Nikita stopped studying in the 8th grade. He began to skip classes, including in the main subject — mathematics. But back then, he was still listening to me."
But soon Nikita stopped obeying his mother. He studied at the energy college for a some time. He was expelled from there after failing the first midterm exams. The following year, in September 2010, he began attending classes at the construction college. Two months later, he and Artyom went on their first hunt.

The energy college. The construction college.
Studying at the construction college turned into trouble.
Marina Lytkina: "At first, Nikita was teased and bullied. And then they started extorting money from him. Then he was patronized by one of his classmates, and in return, together with the older guys, he demanded money — in other words, he engaged in extortion. They came to our apartment together and took everything they found. First, they took some money, then they took my walkman, and the last time they stole the gold. Nikita followed them like a steer. It was impossible to hide the loss. I found out everything and called the police. A criminal case was opened."
Later, Marina recanted the statement to the police — she didn't want that boy to be imprisoned.

One of Nikita's college classmates, talking about him. Read it from the bottom up.

Anyway returning to Lore Stuff but: feels really likely The Crush was due to Ludinus's attempt to contact Ruidus in the late 500s, which is what led to the fall of Molaesmyr. I wonder if he even realized until centuries later, since I don't think he was able to communicate with Ruidus until he started working with Ruidusborn which feels comparatively recent. Imagine unwittingly setting into motion a natural disaster that permitted the final stages of complete imperial takeover on an entirely different celestial body and then finding out 200-odd years later that this is extremely beneficial to your lifelong dreams.

I swear the rest of my work for this semester of education is going to be done purely out of spite. I am going to write sentences like I'm writing my novel just to get up to word count goals. This class was feeling pointless and directed mainly at multi-subject majors before I decided to drop the edu load and now that feeling has doubled. None of this will be useful. But. My gpa

This article misses the point.....a big reason I see students struggle with algebra I/pre-algebra is because they're lacking basic math skills: multiplication/division fact fluency + fractions which isn't something that should be addressed in middle school

I've reached a point as a scientist where I now have a compulsive need to show my work. Like, before my math teachers would struggle to get me to show my work because a major part of my self-actualization as the Gifted Kid™️ meant that I didn't need to because I simply just knew, like the annoying little shit I was.
Well, fast forward to today, and the math I'm doing is complicated enough and undefined enough for any specific situation where I'm basically rebuilding everything wholesale out of the basic principles every single time (because it's simply easier than memorizing a list of formulas). With that, I'm prone to get something wrong because I mixed up a rule of logarithms or misremembered which infinite series equals what elementary operation. As such, whenever I throw around any number with any confidence around, I always back it up with my work because if someone walks up and calls me the fuck out, they can A) understand how I came to that conclusion, and B) point to where I fucked up in the first place. To which I'll shake their hand, and thank them for saving me the time from redefining everything all over again and then make the applicable change. It honestly makes you look less stupid because it turns big claims into small flubs, and people are way more charitable with those.
When you're a lot more confident in your inabilities, documenting your work makes receiving help way easier, and that genuinely is why math teachers are so niggling about all that. They were always right.

one funny thing about today: one of the kids telling me pre-k was more fun because you don’t do math in pre-k, but you have to do math in kindergarten and he hates math lol

Sometimes I am violently reminded of the fact that I really do have like. Zero sense of self at all.
Like I'm pretty sure I have a favorite color, I give people an answer when they ask, but if I think about it for more than 2 seconds I'm not so sure anymore.
Or how I genuinely don't know what I like to do. I tell people I have fun when I bake and sew and read and watch silly TV shows but like... do I? Do I like doing that stuff? I don't know.
It just makes my dream of being a pilot so much more ironic, cause it's the one thing that I think I would actually like, actually enjoy, and find a real sense of fulfillment in, and it's the one thing I can't have.

My fav thing about people who heard somebody say 'age differences in relationships are bad' and just decided to take it at face value like they're following a school rule rather than bothering to understand Why an age gap may be a problem in certain situations, is that you can have ships in fandom where they're soooo fucked up and just deeply unhealthy Alone let alone together and you have That subset of fandom that's saying the ship is an issue because there is an age gap between two grown adults.
Yeah. That's the problem in that relationship. Sure.

question for followers who are smarter than me. so as i understand it there's a thing called "relativity" where if two objects are in motion relative to each other at a constant velocity there's no objective fact of the matter as to which one Is Moving and which one Is Stationary. there is only the fact that they have Velocity Relative To Each Other.
and there are things called "special relativity" and "general relativity" where mass and energy are interchangeable and time is measured differently at different speeds and observers will observe all velocities relative to them of massive objects as asymptotically approaching the speed of light but never meeting or exceeding it.
these are, like, different things, right? you can have the first thing called "relativity" with newtonian mechanics? i feel like i once read that these are different things. but i could be wrong.
