I'm in a 400-level Artificial Intelligence course and we spent half of the class struggling with basic addition. And I mean humans looking over graphs and such and struggling with addition. No AI needed for bad math. I had to pull out a calculator for 9+3.
#math#artificial intelligence#college#professors are smarter and dumber than you could ever know#I do not understand basic math#but I've taken multivariate calc#I love math#but hate arithmetic

you have $100. due to a squid games type escapade, you are currently trapped in Whole Foods and can't leave or someone will take you out with a bullet to the brain. you have to buy all the food you eat. you can't shoplift it or steal it from the other competitors. a carton of 12 organic eggs costs $10.
your friend Greg has $100. due to a competing squid games franchise, he is trapped in a Costco. he can't leave, or they'll set the dogs on him. he still has to buy all the food he eats. he can buy 36 eggs for $7
which one of you will starve first? are you or Greg functionally "wealthier" within your respective squid game?
#some of the people on this website are so fucking stupid it is unbelievable#sorry to be like “you dont pay rent or have a job” but they obviously do not pay rent or have a job#maybe if i say it in television they will be able to understand#“if you live somewhere things cost more#you functionally have less money“ is so basic an idea i dont know how to dumb it down further for you#i really dont#this is like flunking out of basic story problems-level math you fucking morons#if you live in hawaii $10 is functionally $6 at the grocery store#in alaska its about $4#whats not clicking#wow what a great blocklist honeypot this post is!!!

In the 6th grade Nikita was enrolled in a math class. But he didn't gravitate towards science.
Marina Lytkina recalls: "The teacher had no pedagogical education, she's a programmer. And she interacted with the children as if they were students, she didn't explain anything to them. She corrected mistakes in the notebooks and said that they should have listened in class. People have never understood that he's not like everyone else: he will never ask for anything, always silent. Nikita stopped studying in the 8th grade. He began to skip classes, including in the main subject — mathematics. But back then, he was still listening to me."
But soon Nikita stopped obeying his mother. He studied at the energy college for a some time. He was expelled from there after failing the first midterm exams. The following year, in September 2010, he began attending classes at the construction college. Two months later, he and Artyom went on their first hunt.
The energy college. The construction college.
Studying at the construction college turned into trouble.
Marina Lytkina: "At first, Nikita was teased and bullied. And then they started extorting money from him. Then he was patronized by one of his classmates, and in return, together with the older guys, he demanded money — in other words, he engaged in extortion. They came to our apartment together and took everything they found. First, they took some money, then they took my walkman, and the last time they stole the gold. Nikita followed them like a steer. It was impossible to hide the loss. I found out everything and called the police. A criminal case was opened."
Later, Marina recanted the statement to the police — she didn't want that boy to be imprisoned.

One of Nikita's college classmates, talking about him. Read it from the bottom up.

Anyway returning to Lore Stuff but: feels really likely The Crush was due to Ludinus's attempt to contact Ruidus in the late 500s, which is what led to the fall of Molaesmyr. I wonder if he even realized until centuries later, since I don't think he was able to communicate with Ruidus until he started working with Ruidusborn which feels comparatively recent. Imagine unwittingly setting into motion a natural disaster that permitted the final stages of complete imperial takeover on an entirely different celestial body and then finding out 200-odd years later that this is extremely beneficial to your lifelong dreams.
#i really do understand the depths of his hubris because he keeps...not failing upward he is too smart to fail#but he keeps stabbing in the dark and hitting precisely the right thing. i do wonder if he orchestrated the eve of crimson midnight#timeline gets a bit wonky there due to Writers Doing Math#or if he was just a clever opportunist#critical role spoilers#critical role#we really need to get more info about ludinus like. the choice to fixate on ruidus is in fact brilliant.#he could have taught liliana or two a thing given that he basically saw priests saying RUN and was like. bet.#but like...his notes in molaesmyr don't mention the people on the moon#just a sealed alien entity. did he know? did he think the moon was only a prison?#we ALSO need the actual history of ruidus. can chet just. touch the ground. can fcg cast legend lore

I swear the rest of my work for this semester of education is going to be done purely out of spite. I am going to write sentences like I'm writing my novel just to get up to word count goals. This class was feeling pointless and directed mainly at multi-subject majors before I decided to drop the edu load and now that feeling has doubled. None of this will be useful. But. My gpa
#Starlight Does Uni#No seriously making vocab posters isn't really going to work long term in the college math classroom I don't know what to tell you#I don't think they'd even be really useful in the AP Calc classroom that was my original plan tbh#Aside from the first few days of concept learning#Because honestly if you're having to rely long-term on a poster in order to be able to do derivation and integration#You're not going to do well on the AP exam#And that's like. the point of the class#I get scaffolding is good and everything. Like I understand that#But like. For the AP classroom. There's a very particular goal that they're trying to reach.#And too much long-term scaffolding of the basics will actually hinder rather than help.#I honestly feel like my AP Calc class didn't do as well as they could have#Because my teacher didn't set limits on what we were allowed to use on exams until the month before the big one#So I was the only one holding myself to exam pacing (finishing in the exam period) and doing my best to not rely on the formula sheet#And I was one of the only people to get a 5#Like absolutely there should be resources for ELLs#But I don't think this is something that would work quite like they're saying it should at the 12th grade level idk#Because what's being suggested is essentially that formula sheet on the walls.#And. No.

@ god why does my brain specifically and exclusively hate economics
#there is no other field/topic that i've ever tried to learn about that has produced the same like#white static brain sieve experience that econ does#i had to take so many econ classes in college!! and i got a's in all of them but it was through gritted teeth determination#and a deep willingness to do absolutely any extra credit possible#i rlly don't understand why its so hard for me#like it's basically sociology + math which are two things that DO make sense to me#but put them together and my brain goes 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH'#i still don't remember anything abt my international econ course from college. i think i dissociated thru the entire thing#it was in the same building as my fave campus art museum#and every day after class i would immediately go and just stand quietly in the museum staring at art#my econ of discrimination class was better but also like the only class i ever intensively studied for#and honestly i don't think i rlly remember anything from it#anyway. i was trying to read abt the malthusian trap and my brain gave up#so#perhaps its bed time#personal

This article misses the point.....a big reason I see students struggle with algebra I/pre-algebra is because they're lacking basic math skills: multiplication/division fact fluency + fractions which isn't something that should be addressed in middle school
#they cant do algebra because they're still using repeated addition to find 8x3 and don't know what a slope is because they don't understand#what a fraction is#and how to manipulate it#inequities in algebra attainment need to be addressed in elementary school not 8th grade#forcing children who cant do basic arithmetic into algebra i helps no one#to be clear this is not the students' fault#its a structural flaw in how math is taught in the us at the moment

lads it's so fucking frustrating when you desperately want to learn and understand something but u just can't fucking get ir
#because of various reasons I've accidentally skipped up a level in physics#so im learning calc based physics instead of basic physics#which is fine except the physics I'm currently taking expects me to have already taken basic phsyics and so im just confused and behind#this is like calc 2 all over again#but ten times worse because since it's a summer class im learning way more stuff at a way quicker rate#and i can't even go to the tutoring center bc again. summer school. it's not even open#im so stressed I barely understand how to solve these and i don't have anyone I can ask#and we have a test on Monday and i have a bad feeling about it#it's not even difficult math it's basic algebra we haven't even gotten to the calc yet#turns out not solving word problems for 3 years severely hinders your ability to solve word problems#and i also just cannot fuckin focus at all and it's frustrating#this homework is due tomorrow and im tired and wanna go to bed but none of it is done#lilac post#if this doesn't work out idk wtf else to do im hinging all my hopes on this

discovering Where The Math Is in something confusing is always such an immense relief
#been trying to learn data analysis for MONTHS now and i only just got a good big picture understanding of What It Is lmao#like. okay. you have some data#you come up with a clearly-defined question. you clean your data#you decide what statistical test is appropriate to answer the question & appropriate for your data#and. CRUCIALLY. deciding which one is Appropriate isnt just some sort of witchcraft!! they all have assumptions built in#often because of how theyre calculated#THATS JUST MATH!!!! i know how to do that#''you can only apply this thing in specific circumstances'' thats a theorem basically. 90% of my coursework in uni was theorems and proofs#still need to practice actually DOING data analysis & im sure ill run into some problems but. hooray! i think i know how to do this!#personal#numbers do not lie

I've reached a point as a scientist where I now have a compulsive need to show my work. Like, before my math teachers would struggle to get me to show my work because a major part of my self-actualization as the Gifted Kid™️ meant that I didn't need to because I simply just knew, like the annoying little shit I was.
Well, fast forward to today, and the math I'm doing is complicated enough and undefined enough for any specific situation where I'm basically rebuilding everything wholesale out of the basic principles every single time (because it's simply easier than memorizing a list of formulas). With that, I'm prone to get something wrong because I mixed up a rule of logarithms or misremembered which infinite series equals what elementary operation. As such, whenever I throw around any number with any confidence around, I always back it up with my work because if someone walks up and calls me the fuck out, they can A) understand how I came to that conclusion, and B) point to where I fucked up in the first place. To which I'll shake their hand, and thank them for saving me the time from redefining everything all over again and then make the applicable change. It honestly makes you look less stupid because it turns big claims into small flubs, and people are way more charitable with those.
When you're a lot more confident in your inabilities, documenting your work makes receiving help way easier, and that genuinely is why math teachers are so niggling about all that. They were always right.
#now theres always the ''you didnt do it my way'' varity which#while frustration with those is understandable; as ive said a lot of my math is basically rebuilding formulas from the basic principles#so if you dont learn new prinicples you have less tools in your belt#me when i'm 12: why must i show my work? i simply know!#me when i'm 21: here's the answer. heres my work. if you object figure it out yourself and call me.

one funny thing about today: one of the kids telling me pre-k was more fun because you don’t do math in pre-k, but you have to do math in kindergarten and he hates math lol
#i was like. same#internally i thought oh honey it just gets worse after this#they’re learning the most basic math and obviously to me it’s way too easy#but for them it’s a new concept and it can be frustrating#so i understand#oh but how do i love when they figure out those basic math skills#makes me proud :’)#logan.txt

Sometimes I am violently reminded of the fact that I really do have like. Zero sense of self at all.
Like I'm pretty sure I have a favorite color, I give people an answer when they ask, but if I think about it for more than 2 seconds I'm not so sure anymore.
Or how I genuinely don't know what I like to do. I tell people I have fun when I bake and sew and read and watch silly TV shows but like... do I? Do I like doing that stuff? I don't know.
It just makes my dream of being a pilot so much more ironic, cause it's the one thing that I think I would actually like, actually enjoy, and find a real sense of fulfillment in, and it's the one thing I can't have.
#vent post#vent#sorry for like actually venting a lot lately chat I've just been doing some thinking#also I'm pretty sure I did the worst I've ever done on a math test in my entire life today#i FAILED failed that shit#i used to be so good at math#top of my class all throughout middle school#got a perfect score plus extra credit on the first try of my eighth grade final#finished middle school with my lowest math grade being a 100%#the highest being 107#and now i can't do that same math anymore#I've been going back and doing the exact same problems middle school me did easily#and i can't do them anymore#no matter how much i study and how hard i try#i literally cannot do basic math anymore#and i don't understand why#it's so frustrating seeing what used to be my best and most favorite subject just slip right through my fingers#i see problems and i immediately just think#“i know this. i know how to do this. i used to do this for fun. i like this. i want to do this.”#but then i try it and it's all just... gone.

My fav thing about people who heard somebody say 'age differences in relationships are bad' and just decided to take it at face value like they're following a school rule rather than bothering to understand Why an age gap may be a problem in certain situations, is that you can have ships in fandom where they're soooo fucked up and just deeply unhealthy Alone let alone together and you have That subset of fandom that's saying the ship is an issue because there is an age gap between two grown adults.
Yeah. That's the problem in that relationship. Sure.
#there are next to no set rules as to what is bad and what isn't that work for Every situation snd couple lol#a 5 year age gap when you're young has the potential to be criminal#a 5 year age gap in your 30's basically means you're the same age#but age gaps aren't the point here#it's the lack of any thinking#I'm that bitch that perpetually needs to know Why and i cannot comprehend people who#just take this shit at face value without thinking about it#do you all know how manipulable that makes you????#I'm a nosy and curious bitch and that could sooo never be me lol#you will often think about this stuff and agree! but at least think about it 🙃#anyway this post was inspired by a very unhealthy ship of two messes#where the woman is like mid 30's and the dude is late 20's and they spend all their time doing#like.. awful shit and the issue is... she's older than him#apparently#you need to understand Why something is bad to accurately apply it to other situations#anyway this is why i was bad at math in school#if i didnt know Why a rule exists i didnt get it#and nobody would explain Why#so annoying

question for followers who are smarter than me. so as i understand it there's a thing called "relativity" where if two objects are in motion relative to each other at a constant velocity there's no objective fact of the matter as to which one Is Moving and which one Is Stationary. there is only the fact that they have Velocity Relative To Each Other.
and there are things called "special relativity" and "general relativity" where mass and energy are interchangeable and time is measured differently at different speeds and observers will observe all velocities relative to them of massive objects as asymptotically approaching the speed of light but never meeting or exceeding it.
these are, like, different things, right? you can have the first thing called "relativity" with newtonian mechanics? i feel like i once read that these are different things. but i could be wrong.
#where i reveal that i have too slapdash and vague an understanding of physics#to get as worked up as i do about the portals in relative motion thing#:T :\#i swear i learned at least the basics of this shit at one point i just spent ten years putrefying my math and science skills.#because of mento ilnes
