Hello! May I ask how you draw? I'm currently learning how to myself and would be highly interested into a step to step process by you! Like from sketch to the done thing (no color necessary)
Hello there!
I dunno how I feel about showing how I work/giving advice to someone who’s learning (and I say it as a pro artist who went through years of traditional art education) because when I do the illustrations you see here on my tumblr I BREAK THE RULES you’d learn though life drawing routine, and give in to bad habits, and my methods are rather unplanned and chaotic which makes it difficult to pinpoint significant stages. But I used my portable potato to take some photos during working on my last piece, so I’ll throw it here with a bit of an explanation of what’s going on.
Before I begin - and because you’re about to look at a mess of a WIP - I’d like to give you some general advice that generally makes life easier when you draw (again, things that I learned in traditional arts education - another artist might advise you the complete opposite, dunno!)
Work holistically. Forget them satisfying-to-look-at clips on instagram showing someone produce a hyperrealistic portrait starting from an eye, with each and every element emerging being finished before they proceed to another part. It takes a lot of talent, yes, but these are ppl redrawing a photo in a kind of a mechanical manner. Most artists don’t work this way. Especially if you’re working without a reference, or if you’re doing a life drawing - your process will be layering and changing and finding what works best to give an impression of what you’re drawing rather than reproduce the exact image, and your artwork is likely to look messy most of the time. That said: don’t start with the details. Don’t spend too much time on a particular part while neglecting others. Your goal is to keep the whole piece at the same level of ‘finished’ (even though it’s unfinished - do I make sense?) before you’re confident that everything is where it should be and proceed to the details. So sketch out the composition first. See how things fit, what’s the dynamics. You’ll save yourself from limbs sticking out from the frame, odd proportions etc etc.
Because it’s a game of relationships between different parts of the picture/scene. I ask you not to worry about finishing a single element before laying out the rest because you’ll find that said element will look different once the other part appears! For instance - you might think that the colour you picked for a character’s hair is already very dark. But once you’re done with the night sky background, you’ll find that it’s in fact too light, and doesn’t work well with the cold palette. You’ll have to revisit different parts of the image as you go to balance these relationships and make the picture work as a whole.
Give an impression of something being there without actually drawing it ‘properly’- because details are hard, mate. You’ll see that my lineart usually has hardly any, and my colouring is large unrefined stains, but the finished thing looks convincing. Like, fuck, I can never focus on how Crowley’s eyes are really shaped. So I just turn them into large glowing yellow ellipses crossed by a line, and heard no protests so far.
Don’t panic if you messed up (you probably didn’t anyway). It might turn out to be a completely unnoticeable mistake - because, remember, things work together to balance each other, so another finished off prominent element will probably drown that badly placed line that looked so visible and out of place a second ago.
It might not look good before it’s finished. I’m mostly immune to it after years of drawing, and my recent illustrations all follow a specific method (ykno, my sunset glow effects and all that) so I can kinda predict the next stage. But I do my linearts on a specially picked crap paper, I don’t bother erasing the smudged graphite, and it looks messy af until I make the background white in Photoshop. Conclusion: you might have a moment of doubt as you work through a piece, but try to break through it - I often suddenly start to like what I cursed a minute before! - and try to finish it even if it’s meant to be bad. This way, looking through your past pieces, you’ll see the progress. And trust me, I can’t even look at my art from literally three months ago. It’s normal.
Now, pics! The sketches are paler in real life, but I increased the contrast a little so you can see something.
1. Laying out the composition!
I wanted to just show them kissing, but I got carried away due to some Art Nouveau inspiration. As you might have noticed, most of my illustrations are quite self-contained (ykno - they look like a sticker on a plain background). So I wanted a tight swirl bordered by Aziraphale’s wings creating a sort of rounded, yin-yang like bubble around them. Consequently I made the whole composition revolve around their heads.
Tumblr media
2. Adding more details to the sketch. It’s messy af. It will be messy until I’m done. It’s fine.
Tumblr media
3. These are the fineliners I use for the linearts! They are made by Uni-ball and come in light and dark grey. I also sometimes use the guy on the left - ‘Touch’ sign pen by Pentel, when I want more brush-like, wider strokes. I work in grey because when I scan it and do my usual boring trick with sunlight highlights - which is an Overlay mode layer in Photoshop - the highlights ‘burn out’ the lines too and make them vanish a little, and the lighting effect gets more striking. I also like to use the light grey ones to make something look pencil-y without actually using pencil, because pencil fucking smudges.
Tumblr media
4. It smudges! So because I am right handed, I start inking from the right hand side, no matter how tempted I am to do their faces first.
Tumblr media
5. You can see the composition directions here. I made it intuitively, but ofc some ppl actually use grids etc to lay out their drawings.
Tumblr media
6. See how pale ans thin the lineart was at first? I kept adjusting it as new inked parts were appearing. It starts to look nice and consistent now!
Tumblr media
7. Finished lineart? There are some mistakes which I later corrected in PS. Notice that Aziraphale’s face has hardly any details on it - I tried to make the drawing suggest his expression rather than risk overdoing it.
Tumblr media
8. Photoshop time!! You can totally do what I did here even if you don’t have a graphic tablet. I used Curves tool to enhance the lineart, then Quick Selection Tool to select the background around around my sticker-like piece and filled it white (on a new layer ofc). I keep this white layer on top of the layer order so it works as a mask as I colour. I decided I did not like the hatching shading underneath Aziraphale’s halo, so I erased it with a Stamp tool (because I wanna keep the textured grey fill my crap paper naturally gives me!). It’s done roughly but won’t be visible once the thing is coloured.
Tumblr media
9. And the reason why I keep the grey shade instead of easily getting rid of it by using Curves/Levels is because when I set this layer to Multiply mode and colour underneath, it gives me this nice desaturated look like from an old cheap paper comic page. It works as a natural filter! But of course I can’t do bright colours this way, so all my glowing highlights happen ABOVE the lineart layer - on a separate layer in Overlay mode!
Tumblr media
Finished thing here!

Just my two cents on the whole gidle thing, yeahh, I see where you're coming from. That's p much what just turns me off a bit frm really stanning them and stuff, esp after an apparent incident where one of them did sumn really offensive to sea/malays idk, i can't rmb so I might be wrong. For Henna, I don't really have a problem w it, probably because I'm raised in a multinational country, and sometimes for school festivals, we have ppl (usually malays/indians) set up a henna booth. The ethnic +
cont./ hip thing is kinda racist tho. SK may have a booming economy, but you can’t ignore the fact that they still have underlying sexist and racist problems. That’s the thing for a lot of Asian countries anyways, sadly… Compared to western countries that are progressing socially, Asian countries collectively need to get rid of their sexist and racist ideals like the whole “men are more important” and “white skin is beautiful ” thing…
+ I wholly agree with the fact that these monoracial countries often have a lot of negative stereotypes on other cultures/races. SK beauty brands still only have like 2-3 shades of light foundation, the older gen have a prejudice against darker skinned people, media still whitewashes idols and celebs like they’re paper and even more instances.
—-
Henna booths are set up to celebrate the culture, to introduce and expose a part of our culture and share it with others; the meaning behind its purpose is significant. However, using it as fashion statement in video that is not relevant to the culture, I don’t like it. As a brown girl, there are times when you are victim to people’s jeers a lot, and off handed remarks that are insulting. Some girls in my high school were making fun of my friends and I for our culture but then go around put henna on their hands when they have no respect for our culture. That’s why I consider it culture appropriation. By no means I don’t mind someone wearing henna, clothes, and other things of my culture but not just for the sake of fashion because those are our traditions, especially if someone doesn’t respect it.
And you’re completely right. It’s shameful how for men, simply for their gender, are treated so much better in so many parts of Asia because society in many parts is very conservative and women are so oppressed. The white skin thing is ridiculous too. All they do in India with face wash ads is emphasize how it will whiten your skin in 2 weeks. Its gross because that sort of thing is detrimental for those who are dark skinned. It makes me so uncomfortable when my aunty says “I wish I was paler like you, I hate my skin” like?? white washing, and this paler skin beauty standards are big yikes.

miraclesandmonsters replied to your post: this was meant to be under a cut but tumblr’s...
There’s also something rather disturbing about his paleness indicating his refusal to cross that line. Don’t think it was intentional, but it’s something that really should have been thought about, especially since vampires have been racialized throughout history
oh yeah. especially frustrating because baz’s paleness is something people expressed discomfort with in carry on, and she had a chance to /improve/ it here, but then... made it worse?
like... i don’t know. i’ve been trying to work out a way to make it better and it takes, like, ten caveats, and even then i’m not sure, but...?
vampire paleness =/= human paleness to anyone who knows what they’re looking at
(so baz as a mixed race vampire... might look *sicker* or *greyer* or more *washed out* than lamb but... not paler overall?)
vampire paleness cycling with hunger but within fixed parameters - they never look human, and they can only go so pale? (so a starving vampire doesn’t look too different /in skin tone/ from a reasonably-hungry-for-their-next-meal vampire?)
paleness as a loss or disconnection, as something to cope with / come to terms with rather than romanticise...
baz’s paleness specifically mirroring malcolm’s white hair as a sign of traumatic grief???
(--> further thought: the vampiric hairline is also malcolm’s. obviously malcolm isn’t a vampire and is in fact quite prejudiced [though not as much as natasha] but... hmmm)
maybe something with baz going ‘i look so much like my mother, Except.....’
maaaybe a discussion of race and identity and being ‘white passing’ but mixed race in a white household, but like personally i don’t think i could do justice to that and i REALLY don’t think rowell could, so i’ll leave suggestions there to ppl who know what they’re talking about
but BASICALLY it all comes down to is ‘get rid of the eating people thing. just get rid of it. stop it. STOP’ so.....

With the rise of blackfishing it feels even harder to be white passing. Had two encounters with ppl trying to deny me that im half afrolatina. Now I'm afraid to even dress/act/associate with certain vibes because I dont want to be accused of being the white girl stealing black culture. I hate it. I need to get over it because im just forcing myself to just act/dress/"be" more "white". Its also hard bc I was DARK when younger and just kept getting whiter.. up until 16 ppl could tell I was half
omg i feel this so much!! there’s a great video by ForHarriet channel on youtube where she talks about how the weird fetish pop culture has right now for the “mixed aesthetic” can be really harmful to poc because our cultures and looks are being appropriated and commodified. but the important thing to remember in your case is that you’re not blackfishing if you’re black or black and mixed. even if you’re skin gets paler as you get older, your family history and dna will always be the same so don’t force yourself to adopt an identity that isn’t true just because people pretending to have what you have might get mad. don’t erase yourself because of others, it will never make you happy. not to be corny, but be who you are and don’t worry what fake people fill their time with.

@ask-aph-acadia, @lilcutiebear, I’m making a new thread to reply to you both here p:
lilcutiebear: I took French immersion from k-12 so I’m very much in support of learning a second language and not monolingual. Personally I think there are two big factors in animosity towards French immersion in the west that have nothing to do with dislike of francophones. One is that I have seen articles complaining that it is like having a private school within the public school system (I’ve seen articles like that from basically every part of the country not just the west). More particular to the west is that many ppl here aren’t French Canadians or English Canadians and think it would make more sense to teach another language like German or Ukrainian or Chinese or Cree since more people here have those kinds of ancestry. So sometimes it feels like the east is pushing its linguistic divide onto us. I also feel like Anglophones here are different from Anglophones out east because a lot on Anglophones here are only Anglophones because their ancestors were forced to attend school in English rather than their native language. (I.e. My grandpa’s first language is Polish and even though he grew up in a community that was evenly split between poles and Ukrainians (with most kids understanding at least part of both)and his teacher was Ukrainian she wasn’t allowed to teach in any language other than English).
yes absolutely, this is another aspect of the issue that gets totally glossed over in the anglo/franco division. I don’t know about my personal family line but certainly people with my ancestry were discriminated against, forced to learn English, and also put in internment camps for their heritage and speaking Ukrainian. Canada making everything into a Catholic/Protestant or a French/English binary really does not evenly apply to the history of the West in particular but also can cause similar rifts elsewhere. Like we recognize bilingualism is good but 1. our educational systems are often garbage and 2. finding exposure to a native speaker of a target language can vary wildly, and learning French across Canada can be difficult if you are learning International French at School and Quebecois, Acadian or backwater prairie French at home. and 3. it’s always been grating that French (and English) are always prioritized over languages people already speak- we recognize Canada is a bilingual country, but there is not enough motivation or access to materials or native speakers in all locations unless you’re Really Super Determined to get a government job and can afford to move to a city with the programs. Canada is also a country of immigrants, and multilingualism should be celebrated beyond French and English.
ask-aph-acadia: For the criticism: I do remember seeing a few people draw the territories with darker skin, but since I couldn’t really see a big difference in their traits and the other provinces’ in the old art, I really had a hard time seeing if they were white or not, even though I know that First nations and Métis can have paler skin ( One of my characters is actually Métis and has pale skin, but I tried to make it easier to see with the other traits. ) I should maybe watch more of the ProCan videos though, just to make sure I don’t say things that were changed.
Lol i mean good luck, we basically do one video every three years and the projo has come to a standstill but yes Attempts Were Made
I think that if PEI didn,t exist as a province at all I wouldn’t have had that much problems with NB and NS being a couple. I remember thinking that making it this way was excluding PEI from Acadia ( I can’t really say the Maritimes for this situation, since Newfoundland doesn’t have much to do with all of that ), forgetting that it’s been a part of NS too, maybe for a smaller time, but it still happened and gets forgotten a lot in designs for Acadia. PEI was also there when NB and NS talked about becoming one colony, so again seeing them as a couple made me feel like the smaller one was being kind of forgotten. I usually see people making PEI Nova Scotia’s sister/brother, while leaving NB and NS as a couple and I’ve always wondered what made them that different from Prince Ed for other people.
Obviously I’m not a Maritimer, and I do tend to have my reading of the history shaped by what people have done in the past so I can absolutely see that there’s ambiguity in those relationships. I can’t speak for Sherry’s interpretations, I can only attempt to justify them in my own readings. I did get the sense that PEI has a very strong little sibling vibe i.e. the strong independence streak without wanting the responsibility, but I can read NS as the long suffering big brother figure for either of them. I think it’s the strong Scottish heritage that tends to tie NS and PEI together more than NS to NB, but I could be wrong.
As for Alberta and Saskatchewan, I think a lot of people see them as “sister provinces”, me included, and that’s why we usually see them as siblings, without mentionning the project of “Buffalo” ( I think that’s what it was called? Correct me if I’m wrong ).
Buffalo is correct: nowadays we tend to see each other as sister provinces but it can also depend on the reading of the history- Wilfrid Laurier dividing the provinces up can be seen as completely arbitrary with little regard for the people already living there, as an eastern imposition etc, but it rubs me the wrong way to just throw them together because they share a birthday (because I’ve got a personal Dislike of using Confederation as a literal birthday rather than a symbolic birthday and I really don’t like AB/SK portrayed as identical and interchangeable twins (even though lately our politicians have been playing that game loll a story for ANotHER Time). It’s definitely a close relationship that I tend to at least read as adoptive siblings since I’m Not a fan of literal biological relationships- they are definitely the closest out of the former Rupert’s Land territories fam.
For Poutines: I can tell you that when the cheese curds are fresh from today, it’s even better. I live in an area where the milk industry is very big and we’ve got that company called Chalifoux that makes the best cheese curds I’ve ever tasted. A lot of our restaurants use them in their poutines and it’s amazing. I know a few people that prefer shredded cheese but they obviously didn’t taste the best poutine in the region.
Another day another reason to be sad and lactose intolerant ToT and yet i regret nothing
For Alberta: I see that Quebec and Alberta have a very different version of the story. Honestly, I never saw Quebec as a province that tried to bother Alberta, we’re so concentrated on our own politics  that we hardly notice what happens in the rest of the country most of the time. I think the last time I heard about Alberta in the news was during Fort Mac’s wildfires, and a lot happened since it started. But again, we’re so focused on complaining about Phillipe Couillard that we don’t even see what he does, for the most part ( Doesn’t change that he’s a shit PM to me, but that’s a story for another day. ) The only other time I’ve heard about AB in the news was for the pipeline and I can say it’s at that moment that I’ve heard the most people going against the prairies.
That’s regionalism for you, most of us tend to only focus on our own affairs until the minute someone releases some bad poll data about how much one hates the other online and then everyone goes ballistic. p: Pipelines again are a nuanced issue and while I personally am anti-pipeline i understand the reasons AB doesn’t see it that way, again we just got over a long 44 year political dynasty headed straight towards economic dependence on a single resource that our current government is trying to undo, and frankly it’s overly simplistic to just paint us as the bad guys because we’ve made some dumb decisions and backed ourselves into a corner here. We’re dumb, we get it, but don’t say it to our faces lol. Again if you are interested in this stuff I try to reblog news articles frequently on my personal blog under the yeah y yeah alberta tag  (my political bias is Obvious)
The other part of the story is the federal government is built on pitting regions of Canada against each other, and right now the West is the favourite scapegoat. Former PM Harper did not help our image at all in the 2000s-2010s and I take IMMENSE satisfaction knowing that he’s now got to answer to a Muslim mayor and a New Democrat premier, you have no idea. But it’s fear mongering like that where ohhh the west is all about oiiillll and then ignoring the history of Eastern Canada literally just taking it from us and the federal government making it our current major export etc etc is really hypocritical at best (the scapegoating Alberta for the oil and saying ohhh it’s so baaad and unenvironmental and then wanting to live off the profits is something that really is an easy way to piss us off, and the federal government does it all the time.
We really saw Alberta and Saskatchewan as the big bad guys and a girl I knew started to DESPISE the provinces, even though she also hated Quebec? ( She’s the one we had drama with when creating our version of the provinces, she hated Alberta so much that she wanted my character to die… That’s a lot of hatred, but that is also a story for another day. ) I think a lot of Quebeckers are not over that yet, it’s probably time for us to go complain about something else than that ahah.
This is one of those touchy subjects and it Really Pisses me Off when people like to use aph Alberta OCs as their stereotypical villain character without ever considering our perspective or history, it’s happened enough that I’ve not been seeking out ocs for my province anymore for that reason. We already get that enough in mainstream politics, and all it does is make us angrier and act even more out of spite. I’ve seen Quebec and Ontario both treated the same way, of course, but QUON is such a popular pairing that more often than not its just Oh here is Loud Obnoxious Alberta Here To Ruin Everything for Us Once Again. They’re all such good and nuanced characters that it makes me real sad to see them reduced like that. I’ve always seen the relationship as playful banter/teasing between the three of us (and really four because BC is up there with us) and I kind of feel partially responsible for my adlibbing in old IAMP episodes being taken Too Seriously.
Also hating a character is once thing, hating them to wanting them to die is beyond rude, and hating an aph oc for representing a place with real people is Beyond offensive to me, sigh...
For French: I can get why a lot of people complain about having to learn it, it’s a hard language, even for native speakers. We’re also guilty of blaming the “anglos” for making us learn English. I do see how Quebec and Ontario look like they have been working together, but we don’t see it from inside Quebec, since we complain about Ontario as much as we complain about the rest of the provinces ( Ontario is actually our biggest target, it’s easy to do, since we’re so close. ) I don’t mind people complaining about French outside of Quebec, but it’s when people do it inside the province that it bothers me. I already see so many people choosing to speak English instead of French, thus loosing what’s supposed to be their native tongue that I and a lot of other people get on the defensive when we talk about language issues, like when we don’t know what language to speak in in Montreal. Remember when I talked about Phillipe Couillard? Well, he recently asked for English people to come back in the province and I can tell you that it wasn’t welcomed as a good thing by most Quebeckers… ( I could rant about Couillard for hours but I think it’s better if I stop it there) We’re welcoming of tourists but when we hear them complain about how everything’s written in French, it’s at that moment that we get a lot more like the stereotype.I would love to visit one day, and maybe these English class will finally be useful somewhere else than on the internet ahah
(of course once again see Amy’s response above for the western perspective on this issue)
there’s a lot of common jokes that the only unifying thing about canada is everyone’s hatred of ontario and that the best thing to solve everyone’s problems would be if ontario were to separate and leave the rest of canada alone xDD but of course at the end of the day it’s still nothing personal and as much as I can’t quell the Stereotypical Albertan gut reaction to shake my fist at all things Ontarian, I am very fond of this place and have been treated exceedingly well whenever I’ve visited and I hope my good fortune will continue. But of course I understand wanting to protect French within Quebec, and I do really wish it was a more accessible language in other parts of Canada. But yeah, travel, education, all that gives me hope for the future (too bad Canada is so Damn Big or I’d be all over it already).

Pt 1 Everyone obviously has their own preference and ideals. They are Korean and the standard over there is different from other countries. Milky fair skin is highly praised in lots of Asian countries because it is seen as status. Back then if you had darker skin, it meant you were poor, initiating you worked under the sun while rich people stayed mostly indoors, which is why they have paler skin.
Anonymous said:Personally I don’t think their answers are “garbage” because it’s their own personal preference. Everything they say and do isn’t going to add up to your measures. Don’t get angry or hurt if they didn’t answer how you would like them to.
this anon is literally a colorist??? O M F G lmaolmaolmao
Newsflash, kid: this is not 1700s Korea anymore. And have you not considered international fans??? How insulting is this to South American, African, South east asian fans or any fans outside of Europe or certain regions of East Asia???
“I prefer white skin” is like saying I prefer white ppl and super white east asians. It’s really fucked up. And I can understand if they don’t know better. Then they can be educated to not make this mistake again. but this is not okay.
And for thinking that this is okay, you should be fucking ashamed of yourself, anon.
This being said, I think someone needs to tell BTS how offensive their answers are ASAP so they wont do this again, and they definitely need to inform the interviewer of how gross their question was.

hello! i wanted to ask you guys a question because you seem pretty educated on the subject. the other day i saw someone talking about how whitewashing is wrong, and i agree but then they said that 'restoring' to a color we think it's their color is just as bad and i just wanted your opinion
Well, the first question I’d have to ask is whether or not that person you are talking about is East or Southeast Asian. If not, then they don’t deserve to have an opinion that personally affects our lives.
Whitewashing hurts a lot of people and it affects so many people of color. Restoring also has a lot of effects but pretty much all of the points are positive. Here and here are a couple links where we talk about how damaging whitewashing is.
And restoring can not equate to whitewashing. We’d like to explicitly point out that restoring is not simply for aesthetics (like most people think it is), whereas whitewashing is an aesthetic based on a damaging beauty standard. Restores are supposed to be close representations of what their skin originally looked like at the time. While whitewashing literally bleaches everything, even the pale idols.
We are aware that not every member has the same skintone. We have to obey so many rules while restoring before we even get to POST it. This to make sure it is AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE in order to show what these idols actually look like.
Also, there is a difference between teasing someone for having pale skin versus colorism. Colorism is the systematic prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group. Colorism has INSTITUTIONAL POWER and has always played in the favor of pale-skinned people. Which is not just in East/Southeast Asian communities but in most other communities of color.
Now, we can not speak for all restore blogs. Because we understand that some restore blogs that do often make them darker are not run by East/Southeast Asians, in which case, we do not support them. Or they are just beginners.
But to equate restoring to be just as bad as whitewashing is a lot of bull. A lot of restore blogs are run by East/Southeast Asians (yes even Koreans). And this issue means a lot to us. Restore blogs are one of the safe spaces where East/Southeast Asians and other POC who are affected by colorism can feel good about themselves. Restoring is just means to a goal, which is to ultimately fight against colorism and helping those who are directly affected and suffer because of it.
You don’t know how many asks we get that say stuff like:
“As a queer Vietnamese non-binary fan, I love this blog and appreciate what you do.”
“I’m a very pale Asian, to the point where ppl say I’m paler than a Caucasian or I look albino. But [we] are definitely not paper white.”
“ As someone who is darker I really appreciate what you do. I feel bad that idols have to apologize for being dark.”
Dark-skinned/tan Asians are constantly discriminated by our own communities, and having Non-Asians take the oppressor’s side is infuriating. It’s like people only care about us for our looks but don’t ever want to support us on the issues that affect our lives.

about
THINGS RAYA DOES:
1) Raya sneaking up and blowing frost on Fae’s neck after a bath and he’s still damp enough for it to suck 2) Uses fire magic to give rly warm hugs ?? 3) When she has nothing to do: looks for Cole even though she knows she won’t find him while knowing he will just appear in these situations. She just wants to make sure he’s not alone being sad. That’s it. She just talks to him or tried to get him to play a game with him. 4) She can play the Zhaleika… when ever she can find one. 5) She keeps a spoon on her somewhere. Not always in the same place but just somewhere, be it in her braid or shirt or apron.
You might think it’s for cooking but mostly it’s thrown at people. 6) Raya knows everyone's favorites foods and makes them when they're having bad days. Raya doesn't make a whole lot for herself when she's down, but she does make a mess when baking to make herself feel better 7) I’ve thought about this a few times but I’m not sure if it’s a normal thing or just me; my scars r rly sensitive, and since over 50% of Raya’s hands r covered in burn scar, I think her hands r incredibly sensitive and naturally she’d rly like soft things…. so I imagine she loves playing with ppls hairand that’s a big reason y she tries to get Fahleon to bathe, but also it’s just a thing she does to everyone. 8) The Ravens: …. reasonably, Raya has a separate garden full of sunflowers and corn purely for the birds so they don’t eat the stuff she cooks with “A little birdy told me” is a running joke in skyhold because apparently EVERYONE has a bird Raya notices the birds come to the dungeon often and gives them parcels to take down there when she sees them in the ‘bird garden’. She always asks them politely. There is a ‘bird dish’ outside one of the kitchen windoes where Raya has melted the metal and stone togeather so no one can take the bowl away any more. (Bird or person.) and it’s mostly for Ada with meat, but all the animals end up getting to it any how. The cats terrorize the birds n the garden and there isn’t much she can do about it tbh. They also keep the mice away so she won’t shoo them off 9) Medic edition: Oh your hurt? BITE ME. Shut up, im working. Cauterizes wounds with her HANDS. enjoys your pain because fuck you for being stabbed is the most aggressive pacifist ever Completely silent and quick/efficient during this, she knows what shes doing and shes got like 50 things going through her head and probably just as many things going on with her hands doubles the kitchen as a walk in infirmary HOARDS YARROW - DO NOT TOUCH, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT will probably call you a ‘fuck nut’ or something. WILL SMACK THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR WOUND IF YOU DON’T LISTEN TO HER. uses the ‘five-flower remidy’ as a cure all tbh  [ Clematis, Cherry Plum, Impatiens, Rock Rose, and Star of Bethlehem ]
10)   It’s just occurred to me that Raya has no concept of age. It’s pretty much just “it’s a baby”, “old”, “not old” and like, all the vague area inbetween. Like ur either n diapers, ancient, or “not old” and that’s the only concept of age that registers most of the time.
A list of bullshit that is canon: Raya is a ‘hero of ferelden’ fangirl … not high or low key, but like mid-key Actively tries to make the anxiety bomb that is levy, not have anxiety…. by accidentally giving him anxiety Thinks it’s cool that Fahleon is a warden. Thinks he’s a bit of a dolt for not knowing anything about wardens. Finds it absolutely hilarious that blackwall is better at it than Fahleon so says nothing when she catches on that he is n fact not a warden. Even though Raya takes lessons from Morrigan, she’s petrified of her… More so of Vivienne While not in private, Cullen and Raya still act like dicks to eachother. Tossing barbs at eachother has become something like a game. Raya can’t sing to save her life! Her spacial awareness isn’t the greatest She’s not ticklish at all She made Cullen promise to keep ‘them’ a secret… ppl found out any way. She doesn’t trust most people. That’s why she’s so clingy and tolerant of Fahleon: she trusts him. Both enamored by and scared shitless of dragons Likes collecting bones for no real reason Weird = cool Not very smart outside of plant things
about:
Name: Raya Galina
Age: ~19
Race: Half elf
Status: ex-slave / cook
Raya, if nothing else, is bouncy! Bouncy hair, bouncy clothes, bouncy toes! She’s always bouncing about no matter what she’s doing. She’s an ex-slave, born into it because her mother was a city elf owned by a jeweler. Not a kind man in any sense, but Raya grew up helping and wanting to help. She’s mainly a cook, always has been, but cooking requires a good amount of knowledge with herbs and spices, so she’s a fair herbologist as well. Now that she has her freedom, she’s much more ‘exuberant’ than she has been in the past, which causes some problems, but her freedom is new and important and she’s over excited to fight for it and maintain it….
Raya is a half elf (half human). She’s fully aware but doesn’t mention it until someone else does first or its to defend herself / correct someone. She doesn’t hide her more elf like traits and prefers elves to humans for many reasons. She’s fully aware of her advantages and disadvantages to being a mixed breed.
She recognizes how had it is for both the Dalish and the city elves but she does have day dreams of visiting an Alienage to learn more about her mother’s culture. She’s rather disgusted by humanity and parts of their cultures, but knows it’s the easier life to live.
Raya is darker than most humans on Thedas, yet paler than the elves, with ears also somewhere in the middle. Her hair is pale to nearly white like her mothers. She has large ice blue eyes like her mother (sans the color), as she was an elf, yet her nose is more human. She’s a lean girl with small breast and no hips to speak of, yet her arms and core are toned from years of tedious kneeding. Scars cover her back from being punished with a whip for years… she hides them rather easily with her dress though.
Her hands are burnt on the palms and up over the edges where learning to use fire has licked away the definition in contrast to her feet that are callous from never wearing shoes. And her left eye and cheek are covered with a brown tattoo of her patron god.
Raya’s hands might be dainty because she’s small, but they’re leathery and fuck ugly. They’re covered in scars and burns from learning how to cook and do magic at the same time. Plus I think she forgets that real fire burns (as Opposed to fire she makes that will avoid her) Not all her cooking is magic, just the things that don’t take long or take much effort. I.e. would hand cook biscuits and a small bird but anything bigger than a dog gets to go n the oven
Raya is not religious at all. She knows the varying kinds in her world, likes the idea of them, but doesn’t believe what she doesn’t see. She has faith but not in a religious figure. She has faith in the potential of humanity.
She isn’t very smart (unless it involves food/herbs), she’s illiterate, mildly street smart, but runs mostly on intuition / gut feeling. It’s why she steer a clear of Solas and never takes her eyes off when he around. She has no reason not to like him but she doesn’t trust him at all.
She is ALL emotion. She doesn’t think first before displaying them and her heart is in full view. The only emotion she tries to hide is sadness and even then, she only tries so much. She doesn’t believe in hiding or dimming them and her mother is the one who told her never to bottle emotions or they grew out of control. (Can you imagine if she did and how disasterous itd Be?)
) How do they move and carry themselves? Pace, rhythm, gestures, energy?
Raya has too much energy; she never stops moving. Even when she’s standing still, she’s not still. She’s fidgeting something or another, wether it’s grasping and re grasping or worrying the hymn of her dress or shifting back and forth on her feet. She walks in the same constant movement; her pace is a little off kilter and her speed is inconsistent. She also tends to talk with her hands, either flailing with excitement or her wrists banging her hips when angry.
) How do they present themselves socially? What distinguishes their “persona” from their “true self”, and what causes that difference?
She tries to be very happy for others, and generally is a happy person, and she feels all of an emotion at once. When she’s happy she’s nothing but happy, and nothing but sad when she is, so she hides. She’s incredibly bad at hiding emotion so she will excuse herself with out waiting for an answer if she is upset over something.
) How do they view and feel about relationships, and how might this manifest in how they handle them, if it does?
She doesn’t rly think much about it. If it happens it happens (and she honestly might not notice it happen) but she doesn’t chase it and has no will to chase it. She’d rather have friends than obligations any how.
) What do they wonder about? What sparks their curiosity and imagination, and why? How is this expressed, if it is?
EVERYTHING. She wants to know! If you’re doing something she doesn’t know about she wants to learn, she might not always ask but she will always watch and maybe figure it out herself. She’s also very into animals -accept horses and bats- and isn’t very scared of them at all. She could never tame an animal by waiting because she’s too hyper, but she is persistent enough to in other ways if she can find those other ways.
)How does your character feel about religion? She doesn’t really subscribe to any but she likes both the elven version and the human version(sorta) so when Solas destroys elvish religion, she isn’t all that fucked up over it. Just sad.
)How does their education and intelligence – or lack thereof - reflect in their speech pattern, vocabulary, and pronunciations? She’s never been educated? She can’t spell for shit even after she’s thought to read and definitely says “yall” Very much a ‘sound it out’ person.
)Are they holding on to something in the past? Can he or she forgive? She is very much so afraid of her dad and that won’t ever change. She’s terrified of anyone recognizing her and taking her back and it’s partly why she stayed with the inquisition.
)Does your character have a guilty pleasure? this is probably going to sound fucked up, and maybe obvious if you’ve ever seen the stuff where she fights? But the only thing close to a guilty pleasure she has, is being able to decimate her mana supply while fighting. Shes so hyper all the time that being able to expel all her energy feels weirdly good
) What does your character’s name mean? Did you pick it for the symbolism, or did you just like the way it sounded? it actually was one of the possible names for my daughter and I still loved it so i decided to use it for an OC
) What would be their favorite physical trait about themselves? she of course likes her ears because they got a little bit pointy but she wishes they were more, she loves her legs though, she’s gotten compliments on them before and for her that’s a big deal
) Do they have a favorite season? What about a favorite holiday? she likes the spring for the rain :)
) What are your character’s sleeping habits? Heavy or light sleeper? Blanket stealer? One that always rolls onto the floor? Pushes their lover onto the floor? Sleep talker or walker? she likes rly big soft blankets, not rly Cus she needs them but they’re just nice to wrap up in. She isn’t a blanket hog when she’s with someone else, but she definitely burritos herself when alone, and she’s not a heavy sleeper like waking the dead but she’s not a horribly light sleeper who wakes at everything either. If u call her she’ll wake but not from just walking around. Also a very clingy bed mate xP
) In their own words, how would your character describe what their lover is like? “He’s a fully capable fumbling idiot and it’s adorable.”
) Does your character have any medical conditions? Are they serious or minor? Do they affect their day to day life? she’s got some trauma -see horses and scars- but generally she’s alright? Nothing affects her everyday life, just situational.
) Is there a particular event that would emotionally devastate your character? her mom died in front of her, she’s trying really hard to not fall apart because of it so if she had to deal with one more death she’d break entirely
) Is there anything in particular that would ignite your character’s jealousy? Or does your character not get envious? she’s not an overly jealous person but she’s extremely jealous of Dalish’s looks
) If your character confessed love to their crush, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc, what would they say? in general I’m not sure, but specifically Cullen; “…. skip the stuttering and just kiss me? I do have work to do you know.”
1.   What techniques or spells do they tend to use a lot?
raising roots to trip people, heating things with her hands and when she figures out how to use a bow and arrow she lights the arrows on fire when they let loose. She constantly regulates her body temperature so that shes comfortable enough to wear a dress, but she can also heat or freeze her body to get people off of her.
10.  Are they worried about hurting their allies by accident during combat or is it up to their allies’ responsibility to look after themselves?
If/When she does something beyond her normal skill level, shes terrified, she doesnt know how to work it and she fears hurting people on accident. Shes’s very emotionally run, sadness freezes the air and makes it hard to breath and anger runs hot and you cant get near her or the air stings with heat.
11.  What’s a weapon they either won’t use or can’t use?
She cant really use a sword or a maul or anything. shes weak, her arms are strong enough to haul a carcass and pull a bow string, but not enough to draw a sword to proper height.
16.  Complaints they might have about their comrades. What annoys them, what endangers them, what don’t they like, etc.
“Sera talks weird and its annoying but shes a good person even if she does hate elves. “Varric should hide less behind stories and ask for help when he needs it rather than busying himself with helping others. The Chargers are loyal only to The Iron Bull and she fears that; she stays on Bull’s good side for it. “Fahleon just needs to speak! He woudnt be so hurt if he just said it!
What would completely break your character?
Being alone. Rejection isn’t the same as being alone, being rejected hurts but it’s not nearly as bad as having no one at all. To have no where to turn and no one to talk to or care about or get advise from. Her biggest fear is to b left alone with nowhere to go and no one to just be with.
What was the best thing in your character’s life?
The affection and attention her mother paid her.
What was the worst thing in your character’s life?
Her mom died in an accident…
What seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?
Her dad winding metal with a fire behind him before he noticed her standing there, and the look on Fahleon’s face when he saw the rip n the sky the ‘first’ time.
Does your character work so that they can support their hobbies or use their hobbies as a way of filling up the time they aren’t working?
She works because she’s a slave. Then because she needs a reason for The inquisition to keep her, and then to make money to keep up the House. But she also enjoys her work…
What is your character reluctant to tell people?
About her dad. Mildly less so that she’s a slave because she’s scared she might be sent back.
How does your character feel about sex?
Doesn’t want it ever again. Will possibly kill u.
How many friends does your character have?
Like 4-5 depending on ur definition.
How many friends does your character want?
All of the friends
What would your character make a scene in public about?
If u shit talk ppl she cares about or if ur hurting someone. Get wreckt
What would your character give their life for?
Her friends or something she sees as a just trade
What are your character’s major flaws?
Doesn’t always understand boundaries or when to shut up. She sees lines that shouldn’t b crossed but doesn’t always realize she’s crossed them herself.
What does your character pretend or try to care about?
Other ppls opinions….
How does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?
She tries to only show that she’s happy and chipper, as that’s what her master/father wanted for his business, but she is very full of emotion -and over the course of the inquisition she loosens that fake mask a bit- and feels things 100% of the way.
What is your character afraid of?
Other than being alone, horses.
What is something most people in your setting do that your character things is dumb?
Racism n general.
Where would your character fall on a politeness/rudeness scale?
35% polite, 65% BITE ME
Bedrooms Imagine the first time any one tries to find Raya’s bed in Skyhold. They’ve been there for a while and it’s had time to accumulate things. And while she does share a room with other women of the same or similar status, her section is just glaringly different.
Everyone has some personal items and dodads about their space but Raya’s is kind of extra. Not extremely extra, but it’s really not necessary to teather sculls to your bed posts with twine, or have scavenged jewels about. It almoat looks like a stark contrast to the happy person she tries to be.
The near by window sheds light on the fact that she has scribbles all over the floor around her area; or to most people they look like scribbles. They’re protection runes. They keep people off of her things and it becomes very evident that she is, in fact, a home taught mage.

honestly the only reason i gave a second glance @ a$he is because of the fact that my MOM jen fucking hale is voicing her
but everything else about her existence from the “rich white girl who had literally everything but her parents’ love handed to her on a gilded platter” to the “crim*ng while white” subplot are just tired and fucking stale
and if All Of That Shit wasn’t bad enough, to the surprise of precisely no one, she’s slender and has dainty anglosaxon features. and ppl wanna argue that “she’s albino!” except she’s got black fuckin’ eyebrows?
i mean yeah, there’s makeup and brow tinting but lbr, she’s not significantly paler than most of the other “white folks” in the game anyway so like... try me. that, and her “backstory” is so absurdly piecemeal, it really just reeks of the fact that they (admittedly) shoehorned her into the game bc they just thought she was so cool
like, okay, i guess...
hennyway, it would have been NICE to finally see a black woman in the game, or like an Actual First Nations Person, etc. but given what a$he IS, i’m actually glad she IS white, bc if that isn’t the fucking whitest backstory they could have given her (rich white woman does whatever the fuck she wants and shoots anyone who gets in her way) then i really... don’t know what is...
and i’d really rather not have the very first black or Actual FN Person hero in the game be a fucking internationally wanted crime syndicate boss :/ a number of the heroes of colour in the game are already coded as villains, we don’t need more of that, thanks!!!!!
look, i get that bli/z/zard are trying to make a game that ppl maintain interest in and keep playing years and years after release, but it would be nice if they could actually give us lore on EXISTING characters instead of just pumping out new ones (esp ones like a$he who just utterly and completely fuck the entire timeline that existed prior to her release)
additionally, if they’re trying to maintain a strong player base, they would do well to focus on one aspect, or the other, instead of trying to serve lore hounds AND maintain an active player base, bc based on what i’ve seen in the fandom and in general, the Venn diagram of where these two groups intersect is rapidly shrinking, if i’m honest
like, yeah, i want more lore, but i think realistically @ this point, they should just focus on making the game fun and playable, bc it’s one of those things, or the other, but not both
also, after this shit w her emotes et al, it’s like, it really shouldn’t surprise us at this point that they can’t maintain a decent lore for shit. so i guess it’s like, we can appreciate it for what it is--a wacky pew pew shooty shoot game with (some) interesting character design, but the lore, fam... that backstory 💀
i still love the CONCEPT of this game, but the execution continues to disappoint, especially from a storytelling perspective. if all u care abt is the “pew pew shooty shoot” aspect of the game, that’s ur prerogative and i’m not saying u can’t like the game, or even that u have to care abt my opinion (or anyone else’s for that matter lmfao), but i also rly appreciate lore along with my games in general, not just the pew pew shooty shoots, so i’m just in a constant flux of “disappointed, but not surprised!” with the writing team :)
hennyway, that’s just my unsolicited 2c on this whole fiasco
