To the next adventure...
Image description and details under cut
I.D.
[A drawing of Nicky, Joe, Quynh, and Andy from The Old Guard. They are all in profile, walking in a straight line facing the sun. They are dressed in medieval clothing and armour, and each carry their own weapons and bags. Nicky has his sword, a crossbow, a quiver of bolts, a dagger at his belt and another strapped to his ankle. Joe is holding his sword, a bag, and a coin purse. Quynh's bow is over her back, and her quiver is at her hip. Two daggers are strapped to her belt, one of them matching Nicky's. Andy is holding her axe, two bags, and a dagger. They each have serene expressions and closed eyes, as if they're not in a hurry. In the background, the seasons change from winter to spring, summer, fall. There is an old tree behind them, and its branches change with the seasons.]

A mother's word for word transcription of the imaginary phone call her four-year-old made to Santa Claus in 1911.
(source: The Harbor Beach Times, December 22, 1911.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through some outrageous case of serendipity I found a recording of another phone call this same child made 60 years later. Though I have to say his choice of conversational partner is a definite downgrade from the first call.

lowkey love how deep sigma's voice is in the dub because. if my boy is transmasc then a voice that deep means he's been on t for a long time. and for a guy with no documents the only way he'd get access to that is if fyodor got it for him. and honestly thats so sweet. :)

been thinking of Loki as a vengeful ghost/demon that tries to kill Thor after dying on Jotunheim except instead of killing Thor straightup Thor's on a quest following a trail of weird clues and strange happenings across multiple realms sort of? so Loki is just leading him around not showing himself but very much heartbroken in the distance about how Thor just 'moved on'. Meanwhile on Thor's end it's very evident in how Thor handles quests once Loki is gone that he still follows all the advice and suggestions Loki made, and tries to consider what Loki would have done when he does things.

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.
Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).
Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:
Tumblr media
Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?
#You're right it's not very satisfying for humanity that the invaders are foiled by a bacteria and not human action! Maybe that's the point!#Maybe it's supposed to be FRIGHTENING and make you ask questions about what humans will do under extreme stress#Not be a morally uplifting tale about Humanity Heroically Defeating the Martians in a Glorious Hollywood Ending#Maybe it's MEANT to be unsatisfying because this is not a straightforward fairytale#I mean I've only read it once and don't know much about Wells' work so I might have misunderstood the point of the book too#But at places it is a very pessimistic view of the human condition and that's partly WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL#That doesn't mean there aren't moments of individual acts of heroism (the Thunderchild for example)#But the question is not just 'how will humanity beat the Martians and prove that we're still the masters of the universe'#Rather 'a) why is humanity so confident that it's ultimately in control of its own destiny#And b) here's lots of scenes of societal collapse and of people pushed to the brink and what would YOU do in those circumstances?#Would YOU feel remorse about silencing the curate even if it did lead to his death?#What if it rather than a foolish adult it had been a small child?#And even if they were weak did they DESERVE it? Yes it might have been necessary but should it be policy going forward?#Would you also be attracted briefly by the certainties that the artilleryman's (rather fascist) plan seems to offer so humanity survives?#But what sort of humanity would that be if it DID survive and is it worth it? The narrator feels he needs to justify the curate's death#The artilleryman would have probably never have thought it was anything OTHER than justifiable or indeed laudable#Under strain and stress would you start to turn against even your loved ones and become brutal?#Is that the only hope for human survival beyond complete surrender? And was the destruction of London maybe even 'cleansing'#In the eugenics sense or in the sense of a natural horror of dirt and germs?#And the vast exodus of six million people fleeing headlong in panic - we might not have seen that exact phenomenon#But didn't the twentieth century subsequently go on to show us unprecedented scale of slaughter and refugee movements and communal strife?#At the end of the day what really separates humanity from other animals? And what separates us from the Martians?#It's not an uncontroversial book- it was written over a hundred years ago for goodness sake and there are questions worth asking#about the way imperialism and arguments about eugenics and population control and all sorts of other dodgy areas operated on Wells' mind#But dear God I really don't think the problem with the book is that 'Humanity didn't save the day!'#Unsatisfying ending? Yes. A FAILURE? No not in my opinion- looks like it was exactly what Wells set out to do#Humanity didn't win the war of the worlds they had a narrow escape and though it might not be martians next time#Why wouldn't disaster return in the future? Sure we've studied their flying machines and even preserved a martian in a jar#But for all our science what have we ACTUALLY learned that will enable us to avert future human catastrophes? Ethically or socially?#Alright rant over- as usual my opinion is not universal nor necessarily well-informed this take just really got my goat

I might get to watch PotC 3 with my best friends this weekend (they've never seen the movies before and I've made it my mission to introduce them), and I'm already curious what they're going to say, because the third part is overall my favourite (so many emotions😭).
But honestly I'm especially curious what they're gonna say about Davy😅 They weren't particularly fond of him so far, but come on the man looks like he's about to start crying throughout basically the entire movie (I mean he literally does cry at some point), how can you not want to hug him feel bad for him?

okay i lied last thought
i think the main thing that's been bothering me about the school master plotline besides lady lesso's uh . thing. was that by having him engage with the students and the professors so openly it makes it so clear early on that he's using them as chess pieces and is targeting sophie.
which isn't necessarily a bad thing because god knows that studios these days keep trying to pull a fast one on the audience, and the movie seems to be gearing more to the thesis of "there is more nuance in this world than you know" (which i believe nicely ties into agatha telling sophie that she's human at the end because it brings into the discussion a nice look at what humanizing these stock alignment fairy tale characters means), BUT i still do sincerely wish that they hadn’t name teased rafal so much and that the school master was if not morally ambiguous by matter of sheer not showing his face to anyone in centuries, then at the very least outright GOOD because the movie makes a very explicit point to show us at the very beginning that rhian the good brother is the one to survive.
because like, the audience knows that there was something dubious about the opening's anticlimax, but the rest of the school does not. if they truly were committed to suggesting that the school master had sinister motives and they were adamant that he interacted with the rest of the school, then they should have given him a kindlier or more sage personality in his introduction at orientation that would later be dropped (or not!) when sophie and agatha confronted him in the tower. like a sentence about how Yes it seemed that good has been winning for the past century, but that he has faith in both sides that they will do their best to win and that the world is still in balance. i don't know. something. i believe rafal is a better actor than that. he knew his brother best. that would have made knowing that he was up to something the whole time a lot more fun than sitting with the discomfort of his persona being apathetic at best between the schools.

#snap chats#dangerous combo i was thinking about mine this morning but i also opened my canvas and forgot i had plans to draw jo yesterday#and im not mustering the will to make the post ive wanted to make for months in that I Think They'd Get Along#i think they should have bursts of violence together itd be a healthy team building exercise#theyd get along until mine found out jo left his baby in a locker and then i think we're watching the bloodiest beat down of the century#either that or the roast of the century. he might not be swinging but he's still doing maximum emotional damage#jo aint even denying that shit either he gonna let mine kick the shit outta him cause he knows he deserves it#but yeah very funny neither of them got proper education in economics yet they're left to manage funds#yeah i trust these *orphaned bitches to do my taxes. whats the worst that could happen#*technically jo aint an orphan hes a runaway but he still parentless im running with it#they'd both also get a stroke over aoki and daigo being an item. for one reason or another#ive compared mine to aoki but now the cursed option of comparing him to his dad#mental illness really does take you places you never wouldve imagined otherwise i need to be put down#i must draw them together but i cant think of anything.... very awful...#all i can imagine is sawashiro in goofy j-drama scenarios with the arakawas... its just too easy to imagine#esp after all ive done is watch tsutsumi in cutesy dramas and movies.... actual darlings for charas he plays. sometimes#im getting off topic ok bye

#first year PhD stuff has been…first year PhD stuff#which is to say exciting#but also really rough#especially this past week#then all of a sudden yesterday and today I got mysterious packages in the mail#one had a piece of decor from a speciality store that only someone who knows incredibly specific things about my sense of design would buy#like a specific 15th century Persian rug weave pattern that I like#and then the one today was full of food I can’t get where I’m living right now#special chili oil and air dried noodles and imported ingredients#I couldn’t figure out where the hell they were from#because the return adresses were only for companies#and all of the friends/family I asked said they weren’t from them#then I remembered that months ago I mentioned missing that food to my best friend from university#and she’s also the one I showed all my decor plans for this apartment before I moved in#in August#we FaceTime for a few hours every Saturday#and talk by text pretty constantly#but we also live halfway across the world from each other in almost completely opposite time zones#so we still miss actually being together a lot#yeah…I figured out they were from her because she remembered all of these little things I said months ago#and wanted to make me feel better#I’m rambling#but it’s just…I get the mania Keith had about Charlie in moments like this#I love her so much simply for who she is#and the fact that she’s this thoughtful and kind and amazing and can make me this happy even 3k miles away#gives me that same urge to rant about how perfect she is#I adore her to the point of distraction#she’s the Keith to my Charlie and I really couldn’t ask for anything more in the world#not the stones
