I love going to BIPP because I realize how much of a crazy bitch I was in a previous relationship. 3 years and I cheated multiple times. And so in BIPP they do accountability statements and mine is “Hi my name is Corinne. My victim’s name is Kenzy. I chose to emotionally abuse her by stonewalling, purposely starting arguments, and cheated multiple times.” And one of the guys asked me about my accountability statement today because we were talking about trust. He asked what did I do to regain trust of my partner and I was like break up and he said every time and I clarified that I didn’t tell her until after we broke up. And he asked what would I do amend the relationship and I was like honest with him and said that I act crazy after a break up and ruin any chance of there even being a friendship at the end of it because I don’t want to be friends with my ex. And he was like what was missing and I had to be like there was no sexual intimacy in the relationship.

SOPHIE, Loneliness, & Gender Dysphoria

I first heard Lemonade not long after it dropped. I immediately fell in love. I was the only person I knew who felt this way. I knew people who listened to Death Grips, Nurse With Wound, and Merzbow. They wouldn’t let me play SOPHIE around them. I knew people who listened to pop music. I never asked what they thought of Lemonade or Bipp but I think I can imagine what they would have said. These songs were too pop to be experimental, and too experimental to be pop. They were an aberration. Something that ought not exist. They didn’t clearly belong anywhere, yet they could slip into the margins of anything. But they could never get close enough to touch the center. SOPHIE could associate herself with Diplo, Autechre, and Madonna, but always seemed strange standing beside almost anybody. SOPHIE, and to a certain degree PC Music as a whole, could be associated with a million different things, but never find a home anywhere.

In high school I struggled to find a friend group. I could spend time with the cargo short and fedora clad gamers, who gathered in the math room to play Super Smash Brothers everyday. Sometimes I’d sit with a group of emo or scene kids, listening to one girl read creepypasta off her phone while another blared Sleeping With Sirens and Whitechapel from hers. Sometimes I’d even go outside and gather with a group of hipsterish indie kids, who discussed their burgeoning substance abuse while listening to Neutral Milk Hotel and Xiu Xiu. I was tolerated on the margins of all of these groups. But I was never included in their conversations. I was never invited to go anywhere or do anything with them outside of school. I never had a home, and I don’t think I ever really had any terribly close friends.

I often wonder how much of this was because of gender dysphoria and how deeply closeted I was. I was always disengaged from reality. I felt like a ghost halfheartedly puppeteering my own body, trying to keep as much distance from it as I could while still carrying myself out of bed each morning. I was and still am utterly repulsed by my own body. It’s a foul, sickening object through which I’m forced to interface with reality. I could never present myself to people in a way that matched who I was. I could never exist in the way that felt comfortable to me. So I’ve spent most of my life barely present, trying to keep as much distance from myself as I can. There were rumors that I went to school on drugs every day. There were also rumors I had plans to shoot up the school.     In lieu of a normal teenage social life I shut myself in my bedroom. There I was free from the pressures of living in society. But I was also deprived of all its joys. I didn’t have to be seen, and risk the horror of being perceived as-or god forbid even acknowledged as-being a man. But I could also never feel warmth or love. I never built those precious interpersonal bonds. I never really had friends. I spent all my time on the internet. There, I could assume a feminine name, and present myself however I wanted. Through the simple selection of a girlish avatar I could present myself to the world as I ought to have been. Effeminate, soft, small, and unquestionably female. People would only perceive me exactly as I wanted, and as penance for this they would hardly perceive me at all. I still spend most of my time online, because my body has only been mutilated further through the passing of time. Every day my body produces more testosterone. It poisons itself more. I’ve begun taking medication to slow this process but I’m already irreparably mangled. It’s too late.

SOPHIE too detached herself from a physical form. In those days she was not represented by her own face. She was inhumanly high pitched singing, impossibly smooth geometric slides, and on one occasion a pair of disembodied CG lips. She was an ever mutating, abstract representation of uncanny hyper femininity. She was whatever she wanted. Around this time she was very briefly interviewed on a BBC radio 1 show, which I replayed over and over again. In the interview her voice is pitched up to a cartoonish degree. The hosts of the show, Dubstep pioneers Skream and Benga, laugh at her. They say that “there’s a rumor you’re actually a man from Scotland,” asking “what’s wrong with your voice.” She ignores the question about her gender, hand waving away the comment on her voice by telling them “I have a cough.” I didn’t know she was trans. I had no way to tell. But I felt a very strong kinship with her. Strangely, there are many fans of SOPHIE’s who were introduced to her because of her trans status. Who began their journey with It’s Okay To Cry or Ponyboy. Those people don’t really understand SOPHIE. At least not the SOPHIE that I first saw myself in. They cannot understand the anonymous, hyperfeminine specter that I so desperately clung to. At that point SOPHIE was somebody who the world was unable to accommodate. There was no place for her. So she became a ghost, using the internet to haunt all those who silently rejected her.

Femininity by way of PC Music is a half remembered performance piece. An imitation of fractions of a broken and warped image. A replication of a replication. Trying so hard and so passionately, with so much desperate sincerity, but never quite getting it right. Is it any surprise that it appealed so much to so many transgender women? I’ve spent my life longingly observing the existence of cis women. The effortlessness and mundanity of their womanhood destroys me through jealousy. With my barrel chest, my broad shoulders and a body covered with an uncontrollable overgrowth of hair, I can never achieve what they have. Even if I technically could I don’t have the proper knowledge or training to be a woman in the way that cis women are. My “womanhood” is a mangled, exaggerated artifice. A grotesque funhouse mirror image of real, authentic womanhood. But this limitation is born out of genuine love, admiration, and passion. My gender identity is not a cruel, misogynistic mockery of womanhood, like Janice Raymond might think. And neither is SOPHIE’s art, as Grimes once tried to claim. SOPHIE and I are both women, trying our damndest to achieve an ideal we are unable to reach. And so our failures are both strange and confusing. Even frightening.

PC Music was never mocking bubblegum pop, eurodance, or anything else. It was never about disparaging something. It was about genuine love and passion. SOPHIE has a deep, clear admiration for girly pop drivel. But her recreation and reinterpretation of it is strange, and alien. So too is my own cloying attempt at a gender. I will never be a woman. At least not in the way that I want to. But god do I ever desperately, DESPERATELY wish I was. I don’t know if I’ll ever truly “belong” anywhere or with anyone. I certainly don’t feel as though I “belong” when amongst other trans women. But SOPHIE didn’t really belong anywhere either. So maybe it’s okay.

There aren’t enough words to describe how grateful I am to Sophie, the pure and earnest passion she had for music, how she inspired so many to love and express themselves as they are--I became all the more closer to one of my most cherished friends, and so much of my writing was inspired by her art.

While today will be one of mourning, I wish to celebrate her everlasting legacy by sharing some of my most favorite tracks that she produced.

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment - “Windows” - i used to be a huge chance the rapper fan towards the end of high school, and a couple days before graduation, this album titled Surf which heavily featured him dropped. i listened to it basically nonstop and something about the gentle harmonies and instrumentation in this song in particular just instantly transports me back into that “it’s about to be summer and things are going to change after but for now we’re here and we’re happy” type of mood that i love. honestly you could just play me the sample at 1:14 where a kid’s running through the halls and i’m immediately in that headspace. it’s very good

Hyper Potions - “Surf” - oh hey speaking of Surf lol (this song is v bright and bubbly and i have a smile on my face just listening back to it rn)

Owl City - “Fireflies” - this was the first electronica/electropop song i ever heard and fell in love with. this is the first song that ever had me genuinely thinking “wow! how did they make this?” and pretty much singlehandedly sent me along a path to learning more about electronic music

Skrillex - “With You, Friends (Long Drive)” - the “Fireflies” path took me to this song, which has a ridiculous synth solo at around the 2:30 mark which had me genuinely thinking “WOW HOW DID THEY MAKE THIS” and eventually led me to the software that i use to compose and produce music to this very day. we’re v close to this EP’s 9th birthday btw which is absolutely wild

SOPHIE - “BIPP” - ok so i realize this three song list might not appeal the most to you if you are not a fan of electronic music..but i am a fan of electronic music, and hearing this song for the first time was the most liberating experience ever. there’s very little in the way of actual percussion in this song, just wild and careening swoops and swooshes and sub basses. there aren’t really any chords so much as notes that slip and slide around where the pitches are supposed to go. all that’s anchoring this track together are these really affected, dramatic, almost sassy bubblegum vocals, and even that’s not that strong of a structural anchor. everything in this song is freely floating and ethereal and it singlehandedly yanked me away from the hypermasculine hellhole of EDM, towards bubblegum pop and comfortable, uplifting forms of expression. this song actually made me feel more femme, and that went a huge way towards me getting closer to figuring out my own identity. i’m still figuring things out every day! but in its own weird way this song led me towards finally feeling somewhat comfortable in myself, which, in its own weird way, kind of saved my life! it’s a good song
