It was late. Way past midnight. Maddy had already gone to bed a few hours ago. But Charles was still up, slouched on the couch in his five-star suite, a frown edged deep into his forehead.

He silently scrolled through his social media, switching from Twitter to Instagram to Twitter and back to Instagram again. You'd just posted new photos of your show in London tonight, looking as beautiful as ever.

The stage was where Charles knew you felt most comfortable, somewhere you weren’t scared to open up your heart and be vulnerable. The atmosphere you were able to create during your concerts couldn’t be put into words. It was truly something one of a kind. The way you effortlessly connected with the audience… it always left him speechless and usually with a wide, beaming smile.

In other words, he would never tire of watching you perform.

Charles had always been proud of you. And still, as he sat there reading through the thousands of posts by your fans and even some by his colleagues, he couldn’t help but feel that same sense of pride swell inside of him. 

Though, that pride was mostly overshadowed by a feeling of intense guilt. Guilt that kept nagging at him ever since the moment you’d packed your bags and left his apartment with tears running down your cheeks. His heart clenched painfully as Charles thought back to that particular day. It was his fault. All of it. He had been stupid. No, beyond stupid. It had started out as a drunken mistake. But you can’t make a drunken mistake twice, let alone thrice. 

When you’d found out and had confronted Charles, he hadn’t denied it. And in that moment, he’d witnessed that last bit of hope you’d stubbornly clung to, shatter before his eyes. Along with your heart and your trust. 

As the reality of the situation had slowly dawned on him, he’d gone completely numb. Charles had wanted to fight for you harder, but he hadn’t. If he had, his current situation could’ve possibly been entirely different. Your new song—which he had already listened to three times—made that perfectly clear.

But he had decided on another path. A decision that resulted from losing the love of his life by his own hand. Did it make any sense? To choose to stay with the girl he’d betrayed you with? In his loneliness it had made some weird type of sense. Because if there was one thing Charles couldn’t handle well, it was being alone. And boy, he’d never felt more alone than when you’d closed that door behind you, making him believe there was no longer hope for a future together.

Now, all he wanted was to focus on moving on and stick to his decision to be with Maddy. Was he in denial about his true feelings and the pain he tried to bury deep inside of himself? Perhaps. Probably.

Charles was still mindlessly scrolling when Maddy emerged from the bedroom, leaning against the wall studiously. He hadn’t even heard her until she cleared her throat, speaking to him softly but with a tinge of annoyance. 

“Charles, are you finally coming to bed?”

“Ouais, je serai là dans une minute,” he answered absentmindedly.

Yeah, I’ll be there in a minute.

She rolled her eyes. “How often do I have to tell you: speak English. I’ve no clue what you’re saying.”

“Mhm, désolé…” 

Charles paused, quickly looking up as he realised his mistake. 

“Seriously,” Maddy scoffed.

He winced at her irritated look. There was no denying Maddy had a temper, her moods changing as quick as lightning. The countless fights Charles and her had had in the past few months were enough proof of that.

“Sorry,” he tried again.

She huffed, stomping away in the direction of the suite’s bedroom, harshly closing the door behind her.

He rubbed his temple, sighing. He was just tired. And speaking in his native tongue when he was tired or upset was something he did without thinking. 

Years ago, you’d quickly figured that out as well. However, you never judged him for it. No, you were understanding, trying to acquaint yourself with his language to understand him better. To be there for him. In the end, you knew him so well that you could almost always accurately read him, the language barrier between you no longer an issue. Not that it had ever been one in the first place.

He thought back to one of the tweets he’d read before Maddy had come barging in. 

‘Charles made the biggest mistake of his life. I hope he realizes it.’

He squeezed his eyes shut, letting his head lull back against the couch’s headrest. And just like he’d done ever since that fateful day, he willed all of his doubts, guilt, and pain into a neat little box, unable to face them. Charles sighed again, pushing himself to his feet, wearily following in Maddy’s footsteps towards their shared bedroom. But as his hand hovered over the door handle, one single truth echoed through him, unwavering.

Oui, he thought. Je le comprends. 

Yes. I do realize it.

I agree 💯 that it maybe stings a little to see VK pledging forever with Mr #2. He spent a long time grooming her to be his good puppet. To come running and not ask for much. To wait for him long periods at a time. To keep things hush hush. To know exactly what his 🍆 fancies. That is a loss. In the way a good housecleaner or nanny is a loss.

But I reeeaaallllly don't see him sitting on his couch crying into a pint of vegan ice cream over her. Not with this hen weekend (especially with fresh tour bimbos on the ready in mere days!!) and not 3 years ago when things were done done.

Let's review this love story-- He's first seen with her HIDING to give her a hug and kiss on the cheek. That particular grooming sesh is also the only time he looks like he flirts with her a little. In the next 5-6 YEARS, there are roughly that same amount of sightings of them together. He's almost always walking ahead of her or focusing on someone else. Neither of them are usually smiling. Neither of them ever share a cute picture of them together hugging or on a nice date or Netflix and chilling. All that we see is them papped in group vacays or when they both happen to be in NY at the same time. When they DO finally end up spending time together in "marital bliss," she accidentally ends up in a video and gets her ass CHEWED-because how dare people think he's with her, his gf!! She's never taken to a red carpet event (or even mentioned at one) and he's never her plus one at a fashion event. How many years of "being together" did it take before she met CL, the single most important person to him? And I think there were two tours in there (?) so how faithful was he to his little crumpet while she sat by the phone waiting for his 🍆 to want her? And the biggest news from the break up? That he was dating around again.

I just don't see LOVE out of any of that. I don't feel bad for JL because I don't think he gives two shits what VK is up to these days. It's VK I feel bad for. What a lot of life to waste on someone who felt the need to hide you from the world like some embarrassment.

Love that for him. I'm so in love with his dance between the male and female dancers and how he switches between them and how they pull and push him and and and IT'S JUST SO GOOD. My favorite is when the girls pull him towards them and then circle him and the first girl just kind of grips his chin (not really but the hand motion is similar to that) and turns it?? Idk why but I'm obsessed with that move. She really said bitch look at me, embrace yourself.

Also am I the only one who's kind of side eyeing everyone on twitter right now? Because everyone is saying "karmy we're exaggerating the dance wasn't even that sensual" and I'm like?? They didn't exaggerate though 😭 at least the translations I saw weren't like that.. Karmy did say the dancers touch him (chin, bicep, thigh etc) which they did, and that Jimin kind of warned them it would happen, but I don't think they exaggerated? thank you! 🥺 oh and the Spotify thing is really easy btw you just have to go to settings and switch on the local files option. then download the song and under your library on spotify, a playlist named "local files" will show up and you'll be able to see the song there. and then just normally like we do with songs, add the downloaded song on your normal playlists!!! it's a life saver 😭 i couldn't imagine going to YouTube every time i wanted to listen to letter 😭

🌞 Do you have a preferred time of day to write?

It's more that I have preferred conditions--those being, no one else in the house is awake, there is peace outside my home (no people moving around, no concerning/traffic noises, etc), and I don't have anything hanging over me that's guilting me out of indulging creatively. Which, is a pretty tall order! So I don't write as often as I'd like to. That being said, as a night owl, it's more likely that I'll end up writing from 2am-6am, if I'm on my ideal sleep schedule~

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

Oh god, do I research. I am spoiled in that, with Dishonored, the wiki is extensive and thorough, and when I do come across the rare instance where something is left unaddressed by it, the fandom folk I know have either already discussed it at length or are pretty willing to do so at the drop of a hat! For Neither Seconds Nor Centuries, I must have spent at least as much time reading the wiki as writing the actual fic. I was so determined to thread the story in as canonically as I could, that every single mention of a street sign, a neighborhood, a distance, anything that wasn't part of what I was inventing for my own, was drawn as exact as I could. I definitely feel freer to mess about with the DH canon now than I did then, but I'm glad I did that work in the beginning, because I got familiarized with a bunch of lovely details that I don't know I'd ever have learned, otherwise.

🦅 Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?

So I actually do a bit of both. I start with the spark, the initial idea, the thing that makes me open up a new gdoc and begin flooding it with words. Then it needs time to cook. Some stories need a lot longer to cook than others before 'the next part' comes to me, some I know right away what I want the vague overall shape to look like, some I know everything but the ending, etc. But I keep a note on my phone for whatever fic I'm currently writing, and I add to it when stuff comes to me, whether it's details I want to make sure to mention, descriptions or dialogue I've thought of, or lightbulb moments for how to advance the story or even tie it together. The more I write the more this note grows, and I've added to it at the most random of times (right before drifting off to sleep, in the middle of making dinner, while sitting on a bus, pausing a song because of something the lyrics made me think of...), and it stays open and messy as hell all the way up to the completion of the fic. For NSNC, I deleted stuff after covering it in the fic to keep the note somewhat short, using it like a to-do list, but for the Cecelia fic, I have just kept in everything. It is... so long. And repetitive. And completely out of order. But the overall shape of this fic hit me much earlier in the process than with NSNC, so it's a lot of stuff that I want to make sure to flesh out correctly, leading to that finish line.

The writing itself ends up altering the outlining, as well (if you can call that chaotic note an outline), because part of the joy of writing is when your characters take the scene in an unexpected direction. Sometimes things happen! I don't have control over that!! I listened to what they wanted to say and wrote it down and that is gonna have to have consequences :P

🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?

I actually don't! I do a lot of my writing with voice to text, and that really doesn't combine well with music, especially if it has lyrics. But even if that wasn't the case, I'm not sure I'd do it? I think I might find it a little distracting. Back in the day I used to listen to a lot of instrumental video game music while doing schoolwork, so if I ever did end up trying music while writing it would probably be that. Unfortunately none of this lends itself well to finding good song lyrics for fic titles lol

🍦 What's the sweetest fic you've created so far?

It's definitely forever. At the time it was the most open openly affectionate scene I've ever written with Dot and Workman (at least in a published fic… someday I'll get the grand siesta fic out of editing hell) and it was a really fun change of pace to write Dot being all loopy from Interdimensional Weirdness and basically having no filter and showing their sappy affectionate emotional interior that’s usually hidden behind their carefully constructed stoic image… I just love them, is the thing

Ironically... I wasn't inspired at first for the setting to use with her. I didn't want to use the same one for all three; I know recycling is trendy nowadays but eh, variety is good too 🙃

I didn't get to go to the Wembley show but I saw her a few nights before that and I've seen videos of You Signed Up For This at Wembley and nearly cried because it means so much to her and it means so much to everyone there.

A Maisie Peters show is the only concert I would make friendship bracelets for. I got one from a lovely girl at the show in October and it makes me so happy looking at magic and maybes sitting on my jewelry tray every morning and I really might make some for the show I'm going to in February.

Honestly I probably relate to You Signed Up For This too much. But fuck man!! It hits!! I am (almost) 20! I am upset right now! I don't have my drivers license! Shouting is hard! Please don't give up on me, I know that I'm going to get better, I know that I am getting better, I know that I'm better than I've been, but I also know that I'm not better yet there is still so much wrong and painful and hurting but I'm going to get better!! Please don't give up on me!!

And then we got The Good Witch. Which, personally, came at an excellent time for me. Never in my life was there a better time for Maisie Peters to release an insanely cathartic and resonant breakup album than Summer 2023. Because there was something to connect to in every! fucking! song!

I go through cycles of music so I listened to You Signed Up For This really hard when it came out and then moved away from her music for a bit. And then Summer happened and The Good Witch was out and the OPENING LINES ARE A DIRECT REFERENCE TO THE OPENING LINES OF YSUFT. "I am 20 and probably upset right now" became "Still upset, but now I'm 22". And the chorus!!! "I know I'll get better, I'm just not better yet" became "Am I better yet". And it felt like she was saying 'hello again' and 'how have you been'. And I was still upset too!

If I wanted to be angry I could be angry. If I wanted to be nostalgic and wistful and regretful I could be all those things. If I wanted to buy sunflowers and make it to September breathing easily for the first time in months I could (and did) do that.

On the topic of There It Goes. Fucking There It Goes man. I'm young but I am aging! Listening to There It Goes the day after I moved to London. Listening to There It Goes before going on a date. Listening to There It Goes on a walk around my campus. Listening to There It Goes and the comedown of closure, a heartbreak in remission, I wake up and it's October.

But also! If I wanted to be fucking petty I could be petty. And GOD screaming WHAT THE FUCK in a room full of other people also screaming WHAT THE FUCK felt good!! And BSC too. If I ever get a maisie peters tattoo it really might be a bat. She was so funny for that actually! It's funny and I'm laughing!

I also have emotions about literally every song on that album and the deluxe version and I didn't even mention The Band And I even though I think it actually is my favorite tgw song. I think I could talk about Maisie Peters for hours actually. Maybe if I startle awake at 5:30 tomorrow morning like I did today I'll write out thoughts on every single tgw & tgw deluxe song.

ALSO. I've been remembering fun anecdotes about the one cishet guy I dated in high school and there's a lot of funny stories I could tell about that period in my life but the relevant one right now is I like to use lyrics for ig captions and a few days after I broke up with him I used a line from Take Care Of Yourself because it was stuck in my head and one of my friends was having a really hard time and one of HIS friends commented on the post "'My love take care of yourself' 🧐" and I immediately felt horrible of course because I had not even Considered that it could be seen that way and now years later I think that's really funny. I was so caught up in my friends' drama I completely forgot that I had broken up with a guy a few days before and that maybe my use of that lyric could be misunderstood.

Another thing I love about foreshadowing in asoiaf is how its layered. Catelyn's heart had turned to stone -> She will become Stoneheart. But wait Sansa is Alayne Stone, so it also relates Cat to Sansa, like her other moniker Mother Merciless relates her to Mercy/Arya. (Inversely both girls' aliases Cat of Canals+ Alayne Stone make Catelyn)

Funnily, Jon's heart had also turned to stone-> means he will die+resurrected like Lady Stoneheart. But what else does stoneheart foreshadow?? 🧐

Since I actually don't think Jon will physically die, there is only one actual foreshadowing in this for me.

Actually, no. Apart from the Jonsa, the whole scene where his stone heart is mentioned, gives us a casual preparation for RLJ, Elia and Aegon VI.

That made him angry too. Dareon was not supposed to be making up songs about courtesans. He was supposed to be singing about the Wall and the valor of the Night's Watch. No one ever took the black for red, red lips.

The emotional tapestry here, of disbelief, shock, grief anger and fear... All of that is going to surround the RLJ reveal.

why do i think he’s going for a grammy with this album cycle?a) it’s been well documented the feelings he has about wanting a grammy himselfb) there have been ~implications, if not outright mentions, in his twitter and IG q&a’s that he’s hoping for an album cycle that does VERY well this time around and for a grammy sooner rather than laterc) seeing so many of his peers get their first grammy nominations this year could have easily given him some motivation and incentive to really strive for that himselfd) the music he’s making now seems to be stuff he really loves and believes in, to the point of bypassing flicker - a song he wasn’t sure if or how he’d ever top - with a new favoritee) it seems they’ve intentionally held off the first single until september in order to have the entire release cycle within one grammy year

so much of flicker seemed to be focused on establishing niall as an artist and/or throwing things out there to see what worked, and i think they achieved more success than they really expected to get, especially with this town and slow hands. but now with this album cycle, they’re going into it with all that experience and knowledge behind them and can really aim expectations MUCH higher than they did with flicker. and personally, i think it would make sense that they’d at least TRY to campaign for a grammy if they think they’ve got the work to back it up, which it seems like they might. 

i really, really thought for the longest time that he would have released the single in august specifically BECAUSE he was hoping for a grammy this year, but holding back the single until september almost feels like it might be the first step in a strong potential campaign for the entire work?? with the lead single in september and an album next year (plus potential other single(s) between and after), any success of one part can propel and boost the visibility of the whole project, you know?? so whether it’s the first single, second single, album, WHATEVER that really connects and smashes, it’ll feed into the success and conversation around everything as a whole when it comes to nominations time, because everything he’s released will be in the running together in a single year, no matter which aspect they decide to really push in the campaign.

and while so much of nominations are pure politics, it usually seems to help if a song or album has SOME kind of impact commercially and/or critically, so that’s really what those tags were about on the post i think you’re referencing- kind of just a question of if he’s going to be chasing critical success (in a grammy), will he also chase commercial success in the way he releases his singles this time around in order to make the campaign that much stronger?

with flicker, this town and slow hands were very intentionally released on thursdays, and since tracking goes friday-> thursday, it meant that the the first day of sales and streams counted for a separate week and didn’t fully reflect what the first week numbers would have been had he released on friday at midnight. he COULD do the same this time, since those songs both lasted weeks and months on the charts before ultimately hitting their peaks (which is more and more common with streaming MAJORLY affecting buoyancy in the charts), and because ~event sort of releases on other days of the week have seemed to become more and more common over the years in order to grab attention. but he also COULD intentionally release on a friday this time to pick up the full week of tracking if competing in the charts straight off the bat is something he wants to do. 

it all depends on the type of trajectory they want this single and album to have, so it’s kind of two separate components and two separate questions that COULD be connected and dependent on each other, depending on the strategies and goals that they’ve come up with this time around 🤷🧐
