The origin story of the portal is so cool actually— you are to Avion as I am to piglins, it seems!! I have no real way go put it into words, but I’m greatly intrigued by it. I appreciate you sharing your interests with me, this is so neat to learn about :D /gen

“Best shower of your life” in regards to being cured as a zombie does make a lot of sense, actually, lol. It must be relieving. Though, after being cured, I feel the knowledge of eating other people/mobs would haunt me a good bit… I wonder if you’d still have a few tendencies like you did as a zombie, like craving rarer meat or something like that. It’s just gotta be odd!

Mmm, zombified piglins could definitely be another species (or horde, maybe?). Zombified piglins who choose to live in their own bastions, or try to brave the overworld, probably wouldn’t be seen in the same light that regular piglins are. Is there an extent of zombification piglins could withstand, then? If they’re relatively unaffected by it mentally, but their body starts to deteriorate somewhat, is there anything stopping piglin skeletons from being a type of mob? Would some try to become immortal in a sense, hoping that the laws of other mobs respawning might apply to them once they get to a skeleton-like stage? I think about it a bit too much 😅

That does make sense for healing potions! Lost limbs wouldn’t regenerate— it’s probably just limited to the body’s capabilities, given whoever’s using the potion. If, say, endermen could naturally regenerate limbs like axolotls, then the potion would replace your limb like your body would normally. Since humans can’t regrow limbs, it wouldn’t be able to, in my head.

Duuuuudee that’s so messed up that the majority of the players are just that: players! From a writing standpoint, it’d be interesting to explore how they interact with the world compared to Hannah or Amara, like is there something ‘off’ about them that you can’t quite put a finger on? The real life people playing their characters in game wouldn’t be able to see the nuances, but would them killing a mob in game be translated to the world correctly? I don’t know how to word it. Like it’s nothing to a real life person, to do that, but in the world of Avion, would it feel more real to those experiencing it? Like… instead of someone coming at them almost robotically, with a blank sort of look on their face, would the player have a more complex way of going about it from the point of view of the mobs or other inhabitants? I don’t know if that’s coming across the way I intend it at all, so apologies If that’s total gibberish to you. It’s not uncommon for me to lose track of my words, lol.

Ugh 😭 I’m so sorry you lost the world, but hopefully you can rebuild it better with the previous one in mind! Only up from here, right? Smart to save the seed and building locations too! I keep logs of where all my builds are because I’d never remember the coords otherwise. And alas, I have Java, so I can’t explore the seed, but I bet it’s lovely! You’ll have to share screenshots sometime^^

Hey, I saw your post asking us to gush about minecraft ocs and…ok, so, I have a lot. Partly because details of my ocs tie into the world I made for them, and mostly because I’ve been working on this for 3 and a half years and there’s a lot to tell.

Anyways, my main oc, Hannah, is from the real world and was dragged into the realm of Minecraft. It turns out that there are four kingdoms in this world and three out of the four kingdoms believe in a religious prophecy that entails that a tyrant will rise from one of the kingdoms, but a warrior will return to vanquish them. They believe Hannah to be this warrior, but Hannah doesn’t feel like she is. Unfortunately for her, the only way for her to get back is to go through the same portal that she came in from, and the only way to get the portal to reactivate is to gather the missing corner pieces from each of the four kingdoms. Throughout her journey, Hannah makes friends and allies, all while learning the rules of the server she’s in and how Minecraft works.

Oh yeah, the four kingdoms here are:

Kinerfall: A kingdom for the other players on the server. They see the world as more of an in-depth roleplay thing. Ruled by Queen Amara, who is also from the real world.

Weyforlosa: A kingdom for mobs. They are currently in an active war with Kinerfall because their ruler, King Coveris, used to date Queen Amara, but they split because they each thought that the other was going to be the tyrant.

Lavail: The Nether kingdom. They usually don’t believe in the prophecy or the religion the other kingdoms follow called Avianity. Ruled by King Hesil.

Vaniscar: The End kingdom. Currently the people there are a bit on edge because their recently crowned king, King Afias, has a bit of a checkered past, but he’s what they have for now.

Throughout the story, Hannah makes friends with some mobs that decide to tag along with her, pictured here:

Lonnie is a witch’s experiment that came to life as a slime. She loves adventures and knows how to brew potions.

Isador used to be a wandering trader, but he got turned into an evoker after being captured during a raid. He breaks free from the pillager’s side after meeting Hannah.

Dilou is a part of the royal guard for Lavail. He’s never been outside of the Nether before, so the adventure he goes on with the team is full of new surprises.

Evelyn has it out for King Afias after he wronged her in such a way that it got her banished from Vaniscar.

Anyways, sorry I rambled for so long. I just have a lot to say about this world…wait, I didn’t even tell you its name.

The world is called Avion. As such, the story is called Tale of Avion.

Thank you for sharing!!! Your drawings rule, I love the way you draw endermen especially (you get the proportions just right!!) Also never apologize for rambling about it, especially when you've been asked to do so! I appreciate it!!

As for Kinerfall, all of the players there see it as a roleplay sort of thing (and at least Amara is an irl person, though idk if the others are as well)... would they ever want to return to the real world, do they have access to do so, or are they mostly just in-game players? Is Amara an exception in this right, like Hannah is?

Also even if Hannah isn't the real hero the rest of the kingdoms make her out to be, she still seems to be uniting them in a way! Getting a bunch of mobs together from different corners of the world towards a common force (and getting to understand where each is coming from) is very valuable!

For kingdoms, are they/have they ever been on good terms? Do they have agreements or treaties between one another to keep the peace, is it uneasy, or are there a lot of wars happening? In my head I feel that Kinerfall wouldn't get along with a lot of the kingdoms (being that players typically hunt mobs for resources/sport/etc.), but I have little knowledge about it as of yet so I'd love to hear :)

I ask a lot of questions because I'm curious, so sorry if the wall of text is a little intimidating! I just love the worldbuilding!! As you know, my nether fascination is not very sane of any human being, but I also love exploring how in-game mechanics might work in a story-- things like using your inventory, for instance, or how totems of undying feel to use, if applicable in the AU. Like-- for the end kingdom, what is their main material? Like what are Afias' clothes/armor made of? Do they have materials in the end we're not able to see in game, or do they trade with other kingdoms? Do they eat chorus fruit? Do endermen need to eat at all? How do alliances work out between them all? How do the mobs keep from burning during the day? Do they have any magic that helps? Charms, amulets, totems? Do kingdoms have to compromise sometimes (like players would need to have a meeting with the mobs at night, to prevent them from burning up, in lieu of being able to see all that comfortably?)

ALSO stay determined? A fellow UTDR enjoyer? Huzzah! This is coming from someone who wears a LOT of stripes and now has a love for sweaters after allowing it to shape my life a while back lol

Anyways. Lots of questions, I'm inherently curious, what can I say? Long story short. I love your characters I'm looking directly at them!!!! Thank you for sharing with the class :D

Frequently Asked Questions!

With the growing (and surprising 🙊!! ) popularity of Ghoulcraft, I’ve had the awesome joy of getting a TON of asks about everything 😁! So to help cut down on getting repetitive questions, Here’s a little FAQ for you all that will hopefully help out 💙

Q: Does Ghoulcraft work in 1.12/1.13/1.14? A: Ghoulcraft works in 1.13 AND 1.14! However, certain items may not be available depending on your version. (For instance, Items that are made using things like barrels from 1.14, will not be available in 1.13!). You also need to make sure you have the correct version of Optifine in your game to see the items 💙 Ghoulcraft does NOT work in 1.12 at the moment, however, as Optifine changed the way CIT items are loaded in 1.13+. Currently, i do not have a fix for this. I’m sorry! :(

Q: Is there a list of every item? Is there a way to see all of the items you’ve made? A: Yep! There are a couple of different ways!

You can log in to the 1.14.2 server (1.14.2 optifine is required!) at Ip: Ghoulcraft.com, and see every item in-game, as well as some tips & tutorials on how to use them!

You can use [NullCasting’s Google Spreadsheet!] It categorizes items by type as well as update, and you can see the name of the item, the object it renames, what to rename it to, as well as a picture of the object, and where to place the item frame (on the ground, on the side of a block, on the ceiling, etc) <3

Inside every .zip of Ghoulcraft, is a txt file named “Item List”. Unzip the file, open the txt, and see a list of every single item that’s been added, according to update!

Q: How do i use your CIT pack? A: First of all, use one of the lists above to find which item you want to use. In this example, we’ll be using the Lemon Birthday Cake. According to the lists, it’s made with a regular minecraft cake -- so you first need to get one of those. (Craft it, buy it, spawn one in, etc). Now open up an anvil, and place the cake in the left side. Up at the top, you can now rename that item! Leave the “Cake” part, and add a “_bdayl” to the end of it. Make sure there are NO SPACES between “Cake” and the underscore (_). If you did it correctly, the model should appear in the right side box! Just take the item out of the right side, and place it in an item frame!

Q: What does “CIT” mean? A: CIT means “Custom Item Texture”

Q: Will you add horns/tails/wings/hats??? A: Yes! This is by far, the most asked-for item so far, lol. Don’t worry, i have a bunch of plans to make these! I just have to iron out a few little details before wings & tails will make an appearance 💙

Q: Can I suggest something for you to add, or do i have to be a donor to get what i want? A: Anybody can suggest an item! If I believe the item can be used by everybody, I’ll add it to [The List] and it will get added when the appropriate update happens! (So make sure you check the list AND Mizuno’s blog before you suggest something, so it doesn’t get repeated!). Patreon Donors can request anything, (as long as it’s not breaking any of my rules) and it will be added in the next update (This is because their donations help me afford things like my medications & food, so it’s the best way i can think of, of thanking them 💙 )

Q: How big can requested/suggested items be? Can you make something huge like a dragon or a greenhouse? A: Minecraft & Blockbench have a limit of 3x3x3 blocks (3 blocks wide, 3 blocks tall, 3 blocks long), so unfortunately, I am limited in what I can make :( I also have a limit on rotations! (Which sucks!) So i can only make things rotate/move side-to-side, or forward-backward. Rotating a block diagonally is outside the parameters of the program/game 😔

Q: What Program do you use to make things with? A: I use Blockbench! You can get it for free from Blockbench.net, and it’s fairly easy to learn how to use 😁

Q: How do you make animated items? A: I make the item i want to animate in blockbench, and then save it as a .json file. Then i move it, bit by bit, saving each new movement as another .json file (make sure you edit the display section too, or you’ll have to do it all over again!). Once i have every “frame” of the animation made into a json file, i go [This Site] and upload the json files & texture files. Then you can just drag the files into the order you like, and preview how they’ll look. (You can also add in duplicate frames to slow it down!). Then you hit “export” and save the file as a (3 for Java edition), and plop it into your resource pack :D I plan on making a video explaining this soon! 💙

Q: Some textures are missing/flickering/have pink & black boxes! What do i do? A: Let me know (either here, or on discord) which item has the issue, and i’ll check it out. Chances are, either i forgot to texture something, or it’s an older object from when I didn’t know how to fix the flickering (which i now do!). I’ll get it fixed in the next update 💙

Q: Can I make my own CIT pack? A: Absolutely! You don’t have to give me or Mizunos credit, as we weren’t the first people to do it either -- but I’d love for you to show me what you’ve made, so that I can download & share it too 😁💙

Q: Can i use Ghoulcraft on my server/in my modpack/etc? A: Absolutely! Make sure you give Credit to both myself and Mizuno for their textures, and go nuts! 😁💙

Q: Can i help you make models/Will you hire me? A: I’m very picky with how my models look (not saying mine are perfect, because they’re definitely not! lol) but I wouldn’t be opposed to adding in some player-made things to the pack! Right now though, I’m not in the market for hiring anyone to “work” for me (as i don’t have the income to pay anybody) but if you’d like to volunteer your models, I will gladly accept them, and give you credit for them 💙

Q: Can you teach me how to make items? A: I plan on making a set of videos teaching people how to make their own items very soon <3

Q: Where can I download Invisible Item Frames?? A: I use Mizuno’s Invisible Frames, which can be downloaded [Here] 💙

DISH2019- My first of many

OUR TEAM...

From left to right Ric Sapasap, Aviv Guese, Gio Canoy, Tyler Venzon, Brandon Partosa. My sleep deprived team.

Our team is composed of three blockchain trainees and two senior java developers from our company. We are the pioneer batch of trainees to undergo training to become blockchain developers but as this technology is new even to the senior developers at our company, our understanding of this technology is still superficial.

We are only halfway through our training and we are working our way up from Java to Blockchain to ease us into the new technology. Little did we know that we’d dive right into #DISH2019, totally unprepared and with only partial knowledge about the craft.

GETTING READY...

When we learned that we were going to take part in the hackathon, the whole team researched and tried to learn about everything as much as we can absorb, we also looked into the possible use cases that would fit into #DISH2019’s theme: “Inclusive Prosperity”

During our research, we had a hard time looking for use cases because the theme was vague to us back then, but at the same time, our research helped us a lot to grow as developers.

Joining the hackathon, we are not expecting anything else other than learning and enhancing our understanding about this new tech. Win or lose, we know that we will be going home with something worth more than what we came for.

As for preparation, our goal was to familiarize ourselves with the concept of blockchain as much as we can. Most of the content we studied came from various Youtube talks and tutorials, a Udemy course, Cryptozombies, and the documentations for Ethereum, Ganache, etc. We also attended a crash course on smart contracts using Ethereum.

THE EVENT...

During the event all of us are nervous but excited at the same time SINCE THIS IS OUR FIRST TIME JOINING A HACKATHON! Honestly, we are not scared to lose. For us winning will be a miracle. All we wanted was to learn more about our supposed specialisation and build our knowledge on a new technology that only few in the world know so much about. Fortunately, awesome people from Blockdevs Asia were there to help us out.

Prior to the coding session of the Hackathon, the event had these “Breakout” sessions where representatives of different blockchain platforms allow interested groups to ask questions about the platform and know more about the features each platform can offer.

Among the platforms presented, our team leaned towards IOST. We were curious about IOST since it was new and had features that fit better with the ideas that we had. It was then that we found ourselves in a conference room for a quick introduction to IOST with the CTO himself, Terrence Wang.

After the talks about the different blockchain platforms, we started finalising our topic. It was hard for us to decide as all of our ideas were solid and well thought of. The only question is the do-ability in that specific amount of time. From sperm bank, to organ donation, to scholarships and to many more, we arrived to the conclusion that we were going to make a quiz game.

THE IDEA…

The goal of the app is for the clients to sponsor trivial games that aims to promote ideas and awareness about different issues concerning the likes of the environment, voting, or health.

Sponsors (clients) will fund the quiz game which will serve as the prize pool and payment for the player’s gas costs. A percentage of which will be taken as service fee.

STARTING THE APP...

We divided our DApp into three layers, the front end (where we used Angular-Material), the backend (where we used Java as that is what most of us know) where we created our Rest Controllers and Quiz Controllers, and the smart contracts itself (Javascript).

We modelled our DApp. We planned to use Firebase as a way to store our questions but we had a hard time running the test net. As there is not much time to dilly-dally , I jumped to the old-fashioned MySql. So, in our backend, we have to set up the my-sql connector. Luckily, there is JPA to ease our lives and made the code cleaner since I avoided the use for the DML of SQL.

For our front-end, we made the UI using Angular-material.

I tried setting up the node locally. Again relying on the documentation with some panicking as there are some errors involved. (sorry for the lack of documentation for it).

With a lot of discussion in the team sharing what we can understand from the documentations and the available materials in the web, we made our smart contract.

The quiz contract is for the sponsors to create the quiz. For our prototype, we are requiring the sponsors to pay 5 iost as a quiz fee plus the prize pool.

Elimination:

As stated earlier, players that gets the correct answer will be appended to the blockchain, but not all are eligible for the prize as we want to filter the players, therefore the need for elimination. Let’s say players A,B,C, D and E are playing the quiz and they all answered the quiz correctly. They will now be added to the list of winners.

And then in the next item D got it wrong, and was eliminated. Players A,B, C and E will now be added. And for the next item D (who got the previous item wrong) answered it correctly this time. Sadly he is not in the latest list of surviving players which means he is not eligible to be appended. The elimination goes on until the quiz is finished and the reward is distributed.

We have a lot of ideas on how are we going to improve our DApp. The hackathon is a fun way to learn a lot of things and meet people. From what I learn as a firsttimer:

What kind of game should I make?

(for a Human Lvl 1 in gamedev)

I'll be straight forward: I immediatly wanted to develop an infinite runner (TL;DR). Now, let's explain why.

Number of D

The very first question one should ask himself is 3D, 2D iso or 2D? Of course, as the evolution of the video games showed us, the answer is quite easy: a 2D game. And according to the kind of game I had in mind, I went for a horizontal scrolling. I don't really think I have to explain these choices, they seem pretty obvious to me. But that's only the first step, now you have to chose how the camera moves.

Camera

I initially tried a following camera, which moved exactly as the player was moving. It didn't work at all :D If you don't have the control of one of the direction (in this case, the horizontal), that's probably the worst choice you could possibly make. The camera was only moving... vertically. It felt like your character was immobile, you didn't have any impression of speed. So I tried to smooth things a little, but it was still not what I expected. The only choice left for a 2D environment was to fix the camera. I mean, I could have guessed that from all the infinite runners I have played, but patiently experienced WHY the others choices were bad was instructive. That's the only camera mode that let you see your character and the obstacles with enough distinction (which is primordial in this kind of game). Furthermore, you can feel the speed (especially during acceleration), and that's great!

Mobile device

Nowadays, you can ask yourself the question pretty mindlessly, you don't have to struggle with the complexity of the engine: which support do I want to develop for? I went for the mobile devices for three main reasons: - the pool of players is larger on this support - the F2P model is easier to "sell" on mobile - I wanted the minimum possible of controls

Let's develop these points. - The first one is only statistical, I didn't invent anything new here. Plus, the mobile market is growing each year, so what is true now will be even more true when the game will be released. Nothing to discuss. - Ok, that may be a false statement. Let's say I feel it that way. Although I love free games on any device, I think the F2P on PC are more delicates to implement, because you have to sell something in game that is not necessary to finish the game. So it's mainly skins and other "meaningless" features (I don't say their are not important though). In the end, a player who don't want to pay won't pay. And if you want them to pay, you have to create a great game (I have in mind games like League of Legends, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Path of Exile...) That's not fit for a solo indie developer. On the other hand, for a mobile device, you can add the VERY annoying (I'm the first to hate that.) timers or money. Then, if the player doesn't want to wait, he can chose to watch an ad. So no one is really paying to play. Annoying, but fair. The developer still have to get money for his works, and he can chose which ads are shown. So if the player is impatient, he actually help the developer, and if the ads are good enough, he can even find another good game (but we all know that never happens, because it's always the same ads...) - Last point, I wanted the less controls possible, one touch would have been ideal. The idea behind that is to have the less action possible, and so the less development possible. That was actually a good and a bad thing, because you have to think as others ways to interact with the player. So more creatives ways of playing! Plus, on a mobile, you shouldn't have a controller as an overlay on your screen.

Quick gameplay

And our quest is not over yet! Once you have an easy control system, you have to create a quick content. The current mobile market wants to play short sessions frequently. So you have to provide a way to play for something like 3-4 minutes, then stop without any impact. The infinite runner system is quite good on its own for that (that's probably why so many infinite runners exist), so I just stick with this logic. But I wanted more (we'll come back to that on a next post I think).

Game Engine

Any game developer has at his disposal many engines: Unity, Unreal Engine, Game Maker, Construct, RPG Maker... They all have their pros and cons, but eventually you have to chose one and stick with it. If you have a lot of time you can switch, but I hadn't! Considering my meager knowledge in programming (I studied some C, C++, Java in school), I finally settled for Unity: - C# was close enough to what I liked in C and Java (I hate "var", sorry) - Totally free (unless you're making a lot of money, which will be more than welcome!) - You can easily build for Android, iOS, PC... I pretty sure others are really great (I'm talking to you, Game Maker!), but I found Unity to be both very deep and very shallow, depending on what you know and what you need.

Finally

So, why an infinite runner? I guess everyone tried at some points to create this kind of game, if only for the training. And that's exactly what it is: a training. I'm giving my best to make a great game, but I'm not fooling myself. Even Unity has a great tutorial (that I barely watched, boooh) on the development of an infinite runner. A beginner's one. The reason why many people start this way (in my opinion) is because of the simplicity of this kind of game. You can't beat that: you run, you jump.

But... that's definitely not good enough. The next post will be about the changes I make to improve the gameplay significantly.
