okay I can’t really tell if the succession girlies are liking these weekly reaction posts but this episode was another fucking doozy! so let’s get into it!

SUCCESSION 4.04 THOUGHTS

greg got off to a rocky start with a few awkward fails but hey, in the end he finally found someone to successfully cling onto that bred good results in a way! tom’s cringefail bf has skill! (sort of)

I have to say my absolute favourite part of this episode was, in fact, the glimpse we got into the tomshiv lore and their beginnings. matthew and sarah truly acted their asses off with that, the way shiv couldn’t handle the physical touch from him because it makes her feel fragile when all she’s ever wanted was to be tough, and him recognizing that but still staying there with her and trying to break through with words

THEY MET IN FRANCE??? HE WROTE HANDWRITTEN LETTERS??? “I LIKE IT ALL”??? oh that is sickeningggg like the writers have really managed to add such a beautiful and soft and romantic layer to tomshiv in the final quarter of the game! they’ve flipped the switch and made me actually kind of love tomshiv!!

holy fuck do I ever feel bad for her in this episod btw. I get that she doesn’t have as much experience but ugh, my heart. not only did she get screwed over by her siblings but then having to see tom there, managing this pregnancy on her own, and then tripping over her heels when trying to regain her hardass persona??? it’s like she’s being blocked by a symbol of her womanness and her gender is being thrust in her face practically. it was just. so hard to watch.

that being said, I cannot even begin to describe the PRIDE that was swelling in my heart watching roman helping kerry pick up her things and see her out, and calling out marcia for being cold and discompassionate too!! think about where he started in season 1 promising that kid a million dollars if he hit a homerun and getting a kick out of watching that kid’s disappointment, just such dickheadedness and immaturity, to where he is now, trying to be a more caring person, refusing to talk shit about logan in the press, helping someone when they’re in distress and being publicly humiliated because he knows how that feels, just— UGH. THAT’S MY BOY RIGHT THERE. I AM A ROMAN GIRLIE TIL THE DAY I DIE.

She spends months in London trying to get him to cooperate and she gets nothing for it in return. Nothing of value, nothing to make all the dollars and time spent worth it.

Until she meets a young sergeant, that is.

Juno meets Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick and sets herself on a course for healing through this newfound intimacy. It makes her think that, just maybe, she can finish this fucking documentary and never have to face Ronnie Allen again.

Texas attorney general Ken Paxton responded this evening to the federal government’s demand that state troops give U.S. Border Patrol agents access to Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, the site where three migrants died last week as they tried to cross the Rio Grande. 

Aarón Torres and Joseph Morton of The Dallas Morning News reported that Paxton’s letter acknowledged that by law the federal government’s Border Patrol officers are allowed  “warrantless access to land within 25 miles of the border, but only ‘for the purpose of patrolling the border to prevent the illegal entry of aliens into the United States.’” Paxton claimed that this law doesn’t apply because the current administration’s policies—the law, after all, is written by Congress—are not intended to stop undocumented immigration. “There is not even a pretense that you are trying to prevent the illegal entry of aliens,” he wrote. 

Torres and Morton note that, in fact, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported more than 142,000 migrants in 2023 and that Paxton presented no evidence for his claims.

Two weeks ago, House Homeland Security Committee chair Mark Green (R-TN) demanded that Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas testify as part of the House’s impeachment proceedings against him. As Rebecca Beitsch points out in The Hill, testimony from a cabinet secretary is usually arranged several weeks or even months in advance, and Mayorkas said he could not make the date because he will be discussing immigration with a delegation from Mexico at that time but he asked to arrange another time. Mayorkas has testified before the House panel twice in the past year and before Congress 27 times since he took office.

In a letter obtained by Punchbowl News, Green wrote: “Since you continue to decline to come in person, I invite you to submit written testimony for the January 18th hearing record, so that our Committee Members may hear from you directly.” 

This evening, an inadvertently circulated internal Republican memo obtained by Rebecca Beitsch of The Hill shows that Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee likely have switched their demand for live testimony to a demand for written answers because they have already committed to impeachment on a tight timeline and cannot wait for the live hearing to be rescheduled. 

Green had previously suggested on the Fox News Channel that an impeachment document had already been written even though there had been no impeachment hearings. The memo appears to corroborate that suggestion, saying: “We have scheduled the markup for impeachment articles at 10:00 AM ET on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.” 

Republicans argue that Mayorkas lied to Congress because he said the government has operational control over the border. They dispute this characterization because the Secure Fence Act defines operational control as one in which not a single person or object enters the country improperly. This perfect standard has never been met, and yet they apparently decided to impeach over it before even holding hearings.  

Republicans are clearly hoping to use the issue of immigration against President Joe Biden and the Democrats in the upcoming election. After insisting in November that immigration was in such a crisis that there could be no more aid to Ukraine, Israel, or Taiwan without it, Republicans in December rejected the idea of new legislation and said Biden must handle the issue himself. Then, in early January, 64 Republicans traveled to the border to demonstrate the importance of the issue.

But now that the Senate appears to have hammered out a bipartisan immigration reform measure, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said this morning: “It’s a complex issue. I don’t think now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform, because we know how complicated that is.” After a meeting at the White House today with President Biden, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, and committee heads, Johnson still refused to put the proposed deal up for a vote in the House.

In today’s meeting, Biden emphasized the danger of leaving Ukraine’s defense unfunded. “He was clear,” the White House said, “Congress’s continued failure to act endangers the United States’ national security, the NATO Alliance, and the rest of the free world.” 

Johnson is caught between U.S. national security and Trump. On the Fox News Channel tonight, Laura Ingraham told Johnson she had just gotten off a phone call with Trump and Trump had told her that he was against the immigration deal and had urged Johnson to oppose it. “He…was extremely adamant about it,” she said. Johnson agreed and said that he and Trump had been “talking about this pretty frequently.”   

Trump needs the issue of immigration to whip up his base for the 2024 election.

Today the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, chaired by James Comer (R-KY) held a hearing titled “The Biden Administration’s Regulatory and Policymaking Efforts to Undermine U.S. Immigration Law.” The administration has asked for additional funding for border patrol officers, immigration courts, and so on, but Comer said in his opening statement that the problem is not a lack of resources but rather an unwillingness to enforce the law. 

Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) replied: “You know we have failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform up here for decades.” He noted that one of his colleagues had provided statistics showing that President Barack Obama deported more people in each term than Trump did, so “if the border wasn’t a problem until President Biden was elected, then how are we deporting all of these people in administrations before Trump was elected? It’s because this situation has been going on for decades. So stop lying to the American people that none of this happened until President Biden was elected.”

Comer has also used the House Oversight Committee to spread the idea that President Biden is corrupt, but while he has made many allegations on right-wing media channels, the committee has not, in fact, turned up any evidence linking the president to illegal activity. Instead, the investigations there appear to be a continuation of the technique Republicans have used since  the 1990s to insinuate that a Democrat has engaged in wrongdoing simply by holding investigations. 

Trump employed this technique effectively in 2016 in his constant refrain that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, his Democratic opponent, had illegally deleted emails, and less effectively in 2019 when he tried to strong-arm Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky into announcing an investigation into Hunter Biden. It was central to the plan of convincing state legislatures that they could recast their 2020 electoral votes: lawyer Jeffrey Clark wanted to tell them (falsely) that there were voting irregularities that the Department of Justice was investigating.

But this technique has backfired so far in this Congress. After a year of hearing that Biden is corrupt, MAGA Republicans have expected to see him impeached. But Democrats have come to hearings exceedingly well prepared and have pushed back on MAGA talking points, turning the tables on the Republicans so thoroughly that Comer recently was forced to back down, saying, “My job was never to impeach.” 

Creating a false reality to trick voters is central to undermining democracy, and it is no secret that autocratic states like Russia, Iran, and China are spreading disinformation in the U.S. But I have always wondered what would happen when the American people finally pushed back against suggestions and innuendo and instead demanded actual evidence and policies designed to address problems, as they did before American politics turned into entertainment.

in my opinion there will be shippers linking both tae’s and jk’s albums when they drop and there’s nothing we can do abt it. shippers of all kinds btw. tk could even come out and clearly say what each song is abt and it wouldn’t matter because some shippers have tunnel vision when it comes to creating a moment. before last year tn had no “content” to work with, but there were still imaginary scenarios being made up to link them to eo. that goes for all the girls in that group and tae actually. and jk as well. it’s interesting that when it however comes to namjoon clearly making references to a past relationship throughout indigo, nobody makes a big deal out of it or tries to find and connect clues, because they respect him and accept the song as how it’s given. i know there’s less of a “specific” person to pin the conversation on but it’s not as if it’s up to interpretation whether he’s talking about something romantic, it’s very obvious. even with jimin’s face ep, i feel like there are so many signs the project is circling around some form of a breakup, but nobody seemed hung up on that and moved on. when it comes to taekook though, everyone’s first thought is to ship them with someone (else) and it’s weird. then again taekook do have the biggest clout ever

Oh definitely! Songs are rarely specific enough to point to a direct source. It’s also the power of music I think. A song can mean different things to different people.

Taekookers will link the music to Tae and Jk, Jikookers will link to Jimin, Taennies will link to Jennie, neutrals will link to army. But lyrics also sometimes aren’t linked to the artist as a person. Artists can get inspired by movies, by their friends and family, by just a random story they hear. I am able to write a short story totally based on my imagination, nothing has to be real about it. So while at times we will try to deduce meaning from lyrics, we never actually know what the artist meant by them unless they come clean about it.

I do feel it’s easier in Namjoon’s case, because there’s no suspicion on who he might’ve been involved with. Jimin’s ‘Letter’ plays a big role in Jikook’s narrative right now, while I think it’s very possible that it’s actually for army, but maybe also for an unknown person.

While I can’t wait for their albums to drop, it’s also going to be a wild ride I’m sure.

Educational Musings

I'm mulling through several options for just what I do when this school year ends. Most likely, this school district would be willing to offer me a half-time contract in the fall, and the teacher shortage is enough that if I work a couple of contacts, I might be able to negotiate half-time in the neighboring county (which would pay better). Full time is definitely out because I don't hate myself enough to be absolutely miserable again.

I could also do a semester as a post-grad volunteer at a university counseling center. It'd be a drive, but I like working with college students as much as with adolescents, I could limit my hours to the 20-25/week which doesn't leave me miserable and chronically exhausted, I like the supervisor, and it would be an appropriate reswing back toward counseling before applying to 'real' jobs. It would also be ideal for combining trips to audit the Dx class since the DSM has been revised.

I haven't hated being back in the classroom, but I'll admit that is partially because my attitude right now is "y'all need me more than I need you." They know I'll walk if they don't keep me reasonably happy. (Okay, I wouldn't walk midyear without a very good reason, because the kids do deserve better.)

I picked up one section of English to help make up for a teacher leaving mid-year. It's senior English, so there's no end of course test, and I can pretty much do whatever I want. Even flying by the seat of my pants, I'm enjoying it. We're reading "The Things They Carried" because I didn't think the textbook selections dug deeply enough in the experiences of war veterans. I was able to give a unit assignment/project with a lot of creative options as alternatives to traditional essays. Next, I'm using the inclusion of a speech of Gandhi's to make them read Dr. King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail." There's a lot more freedom in English (at least Senior English - I suspect it's not as much the case with the tested ELA classes) than in math.

Even with math, I still like the challenge of trying to figure out the best way to present the material. I wish I had sufficient time to create more in the way of custom curriculum materials - especially after reviewing the textbooks being considered for adoption. There has to be a way to teach math as a system of thought, rather than disjointed parts.

And yeah, I like working with teenagers. They're damn fascinating, particularly when you give them space to express themselves.

I like teaching in many ways, I just have a low tolerance for bullshit, and there's a lot of bullshit. I think I could be a very good teacher, but not with all the restrictions currently in place. I haven't bothered looking up the current laws in TN regarding classroom libraries. I won't have such a thing if I continue teaching, I'll just have books that I absent-mindedly left lying around and if someone takes one, well, I'm too scatterbrained to keep up with things like that. Obviously.

The real issue, which I suspect might be more of a math problem than an ELA problem, is that I can't actually teach what the kids in my classroom need. Even pre-pandemic, we had a problem with a majority of students arriving without the prerequisite knowledge to handle high school math. Post pandemic, even my best students are still struggling with algebra, and if I spend the time I really should be to remediate the gaps, I won't cover the geometry content. The test scores aren't going to be pretty this year. I don't know how I'm supposed to be a good teacher when I can't respond to where the students actually are. (And god knows, loosing time to benchmark assessments, data analysis meetings, etc. does not help. I already know they're behind.)

This doesn't even get into my significant differences in philosophy with the powers that be about what education should accomplish. I hate that I'm subsidizing a system which, at this point, primarily appropriates student and teacher labor to make money for a handful of companies publishing standardized assessments. I hate that I feel like a political football when I read the news. I hate that instead of teaching students to be curious, to ask good questions, to look for evidence, to point out flaws in arguments, to challenge assumptions, the only thing truly valued is the ability to get questions right on a standardized test. (The introduction to the revision of the academic standards for math actually said they were switching focus in Geometry back to numeric problems - i.e. those with one and only one answer and thus can be tested in a standardized fashion.) I truly feel that the current educational system needs to be burnt to the ground and rebuilt along radically different lines.

The trouble is that I'm not sure counseling will be that much better - at least not until I reach the point where I can open a private practice with a helluva sliding scale. Meeting metrics for a for-profit chain, standardized screenings, manualized treatment plans, subtle nudges to prioritize economic productivity as a sign of 'mental health', and in many cases, the not so subtle use of counseling and 'behavioral health' as coercion. I think I'll be just as pissed off and stressed out.

I don't know... Writing is the only thing that makes me consistently happy. I need to find a way to live off that.

So - this is for a very maybe fic idea I've had today. IDK if I'm going to write the full thing, for a couple of reasons, but:

"Mr. Bellkeeper?" she asked idly; he paused, looking back with a murmur. "You don't know any famous ravens, besides the Great Raven, do you?"

"Well," he hummed back, a spark of interest in his eyes, "that would depend on what the context is?" He raised one bushy eyebrow; she squirmed just a tiny bit at that, knowing he probably wouldn't approve of what she was about to say. Then again, she knew, he'd probably heard worse from her before.

Matters are worsening here at Casa Tranquility.  My grocery list this week consists of only 4 items -- the absolute minimum to get me through the next week while eating down my pantry.  So.  Dog food, toilet paper, drink drops and sunflower seeds.  Dog food for obvious reasons, who is laying happily behind me on the bed staring out at the Squirrel Tree.  Toilet paper, again obvious reasons.  I don’t drink coffee but I do drink this... the actual name is “water enhancer”.  I just call them drink drops.  I get a “tea” version because, hey folks, I’m from the South, ice tea is the house wine of the South.  I also get a caffeinated cherry version and a “huckleberry” version that has Theanine in it.  I drink a mix of the cherry and huckleberry together and I’ve found that the combination of the caffeine and the theanine keeps me calm and lets me actually concentrate for work.  So I’m not going out of my mind wanting to jump up five times an hour or mess with the stuff on my desk or what have you.  This is a primary reason why I suspect I may be ADHD, aside from being able to tick off many of the listed symptoms.  Which, ya know, Autism and ADHD have a great deal of overlap and a high percentage of Autism folks can and do also qualify as ADHD.  So not out of the realm of possibility and I’m fine with that.  Also the drink drops are actually quite cheap on a cup by cup basis.  Those 3 bottles will keep me going for a week, and I drink like a fish so all good. The sunflower seeds are a similar thing, a 16 oz. bag will last me a week.  My work is boring, mmkay?  Like, drive you out of your mind boring.

4 items.  From Walmart.  $35.
