There's a couple things going on in the epigraph for Book 1. On one level, it's a lyric from the first muggle song I picture Draco listening to on his walkman at the end of the book, so there's a cute full-circle thing there. The second layer is the theme of change and redemption, which, in Lionheart, doesn't so much come from major moments or self-sacrifice, but from the slow, grueling, everyday work of living, and living better. It's a nice day to start again because every day is. You always have the opportunity to start making better choices, no matter what lies behind you. That's the thesis of any Draco redemption arc, right? You have to imagine that he could have chosen to be better.

And then thirdly, there's the audacity of doing a full Hogwarts canon rewrite, a good 30 years after the original books came out, millions upon millions of words of fanfic later, and basically asking everyone to read the same story they did the first time around, only different. So it's a kind of winking entreaty. It's saying to readers, many of whom are understandably wary of doing it over, zeroing out the characters to starting positions, and starting from the beginning with 11-year-olds all over again. It's going: "hey. That was fun, right? Why not do it again?"

thinking about how one of beidou’s teapot lines is her inviting the traveler on a journey across the sea, and her rough estimate of how long such a voyage will take is about one and a half years.

just imagine being trapped on the alcor for one and a half years with yandere!kazuha, who loves you to the moon and back and cherishes you with the most adoring, suffocating form of love, all while beidou looks on and happily encourages the lovebirds. it’s even better if kazuha has persuaded you to join him on the journey. your first mistake was agreeing, for now you have nowhere to run to when it becomes clear that his love for you is quite unhealthy.

what’s more is that he’s always so polite and kind. you can feel frustrated when his hand entwines with yours when you stand on the deck and gaze at the vastness of the sky above or when he has breakfast prepared for you every morning, but you can’t truly hate him because he never gives you any reason to hate him. he’s pure-hearted in all that he does. he’d never hurt you. he’ll always bestow the loveliest of compliments to you. you’re his love, his muse, his sweetheart. 

even if you’re averse to him for the first months of the journey, you’ll come to accept him eventually. a year and a half is plenty of time to erode the barriers you’ve put up. and soon you might even come to welcome him into your quarters. there’s only so much space on the alcor, after all. kazuha won’t overstep his boundaries, but if you’re too inebriated to make the distinction clear as he guides you back to your room... you’ll wake in his embrace the next morning, and he has diligently looked after and cared for you throughout the night. he hopes you might do the same if he ever gets drunk. though that’s a side he’d rather not show you often. it’s not exactly the most romantic thing in the world if he’s stumbling around or belting out incoherent lines of poetry at the moon.

if you try to escape when the ship finally docks at a port, kazuha will find you. you can’t forget his impeccable sense of smell. he has your scent memorized. it’s practically carved into him at this point. he’s spent more than enough time with you to be able to differentiate your scent in a crowd of hundreds. besides, what are you even escaping from? he’s not monstrous. he’s not frightening. he’s just sweet, compassionate kazuha, a man devoted solely to his beloved.

guys i think the mechanisms just broke into my house????? (i was in the bathroom and from the other room i heard music start playing very loudly and it sounded familiar so i went out to see and i guess the alarm on my phone i set earlier went off but instead of playing the normal alarm sound it decided to play ragnarok iii: the calling at the loudest volume possible to the point it was just like resonating throughout the entire house. i do NOT have it set as my alarm noise ???? i have not even listened to it in a few days ???? i had no other tabs that it possibly could have came from open ????? I love the spectrum different reactions of the kings when they had to recruit civilians to help pilot the ShuGods. From "taking it pretty well" to "not taking it at all" we have...

Himeno: Clearly not super pleased, but immediately knew the three people she could trust the most. The people I assume she works the most closely with in Ishabana. Probably didn't waste time in summoning them and laying out the situation.

Rita: Initially using Moffun to help them ask this dangerous task of Morfonia, the one person they have to help. But in the end, having to finally showing some vulnerability because this is a big ask but it's important. Seemed to want to protect Morfonia, but also felt that this was the one person they wanted by their side for this.

Kaguragi: Is from a culture that clearly values food and meals, so he eats with the two people in his life he trusts the most before taking out the sword. Just wanted some time with them before having to face the ugly reality.

Yanma: Seemed genuinely upset that the sword lit up for Shiokara. Very clearly didn't want to take his best friend into a battle he was only 50% sure they'd survive. Knew he had to go through with it, but was probably willing to fight the gods over this.

Gira: Literally just sitting on the throne hugging the sword because he didn't want to endanger a single person. Literally had to have that thing taken from him by Douga.

is it great? probably not, but the UM-MMC is still an Urbie that can punch you

And, technically, I guess you could say these are their “canon” physical appearances, so, if you don’t want to ruin the mental illusion you have of your own headcanons for these characters, don’t look below the cut! Ye be warned!

I’ve had these doodles for a while now, I actually did them when I was coming up with each character and their personality. Having actual images to glance at every now and then makes it easier to keep them in character, since they feel more real and fleshed out when there’s a face to go with the name. Hopefully that makes sense?? Maybe I’m just bizarre.

I’m an artist first and a writer second, so drawing is actually more in my wheelhouse lol. It’s a little funny to think about how much effort I’ve put into this fic considering writing is only a hobby. I should be putting this energy into school… >_>

If you guys have wildly different mental images of these three, or maybe if these are scarily accurate to how you imagined them, I’d love to know what they are! Bonus points if you draw them (or create them with something like an avatar maker or a picrew, that counts too).

The downside of listening to Juno Steel s5 after putting it aside for soooo long is that it’s making me remember I really love sci-fi detective stuff! so my brain is telling me unreasonable things like “hey you should pick up that vague draft you had for that cyberpunk neo-noir fae novel you wanted to write… wouldn’t that be fun…” and I have to say “no brain you need to work on your robin hood mechs album!! and your other ongoing 1940/50s detective story!! get back to that!!” and my brain only says “yeah but wouldn’t that be fun to write?? a sci-fi noir with faeries? and lesbians??” and then I go you know what brain. I think you’re right. I should work on that. and I am once again sidetracked from my already existing writing projects :(
