Hope everyone's got company in the form of people or chocolate / food today! Here's a candy for you all:

(disclaimer: these are all candies/fan assumptions, take with a grain of salt)

Note on kadian: Kadian is a number code that is a homophone to some Chinese words. For ex: 520 (wu er ling) sounds like I love you (wo ai ni), and is what a lot of Chinese people think when they see these numbers (also May 20, 5/20, is another day like Valentine’s). It’s very common shorthand to get across phrases without typing out the whole thing. It’s kind of like saying LOL or LMAO to express laughter, or like the joke:

Did you hear why six is afraid of seven?

Because seven eight (ate) nine!

Lots of companies make use of kadian as timestamps for posts. I guess an American equivalent would be some company posting at 04:20 advertising pot/etc.

1. GJ’s Valentine’s Day post history:

GJ normally makes a post on his weibo for Valentine’s Day, Feb 14. He sometimes updates other platforms as well.

In 2020, GJ posted at 11:11 (the kadian code 1111 is known for making a wish) with 1 dog emoji. Maybe he was wishing for love? This was before WOH filming, and presumably when he was still single and performing that young bachelor act. (For ex. He’d often post pics of his abs on social media, but post-WOH, he never showed those babies again haha)

/edit for July 2022/ he DID just post a whole slew of ab pics across a bunch of platforms. 🍬 Is he posted these as a thirst trap for ZH and he kadian'd:

Fans at the time speculated if the 5 fingers + 11 dog emojis referenced ZZH’s birthday. And we all know how much GJ likes to browse his own topic + their LLD/JunZhe supertopic, so he actually references and knows what fans are doing all the time (before 813 of course).

I can’t remember where I saved this image from, so forgive me, but it references the fans talking openly about 5/11 meaning ZZH’s birthday. They say, if GJ and ZZH meant for his Valentine’s post to refer to ZZH’s birthday, please post on your respective weibos these phrases: “Love without parting hands.” and “ ‘Gong’ happy, get rich”.

You might say, wow, what a coincidence, he’s posting the same thing this year, surely he knows what it meant to all the fans in 2021 right??? What a cute laogong. BUT HOLD YOUR HORSES, THERE’S MORE.

2.These twitter users noticed that this location is almost the same spot that ZZH took a photo at.

And when you overlap the two pictures… ZZH ends up in GJ’s arms.

I can’t with these two. Even after 813, after so much mess and heartache and trauma, GJ still shouts as loud as he can his love for ZZH. And this fandom, they are the best detectives I’ve ever seen lol. Hoooly- Ugh, I love them SO MUCH.

5. LXZ / Uncle Li has been muted for awhile but he’s still kickin’.

Edit: Uncle Li's account was deleted back in April :( He put a letter out through his show's weibo account stating that he will back away from all social media from now on, and anyone that comes up with his name is an imposter. This post was deleted shortly after.

Doing his thing offline, it seems like things are going well, so there’s not much news. Probably will come back after the Beijing Winter Olympics since CN wants to focus on that coverage instead of CAPA drama.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 25, part one

Holy crap, Episode 25! We’re halfway through! *Cue Bon Jovi*

Hunt Invitation

After taking a nice long break to watch Word of Honor pick lotus pods, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli return to stressing over the shitshow that is the post-Sunshot cultivation world. Jin Zixuan has come to invite them to the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, with a special invitation from his mother to Jiang Yanli. Jiang Cheng reacts to this in a mature and reasonable manner, while Wei Wuxian...doesn't.

On the surface, Jiang Cheng has matured in recent months; much more than Wei Wuxian, with his secret burdens, has. But it's only on the surface, as we'll see later in the episode, when Jiang Cheng's insecurity will take the reins.

Jin Zixuan is adorably pleased by Jiang Yanli's acceptance of the invitation. Wei Wuxian is less pleased, but sort of tries to suck it up. 

Jin Zixuan kind of undercuts the romance of his errand by asking Wei Wuxian for the Yin tiger amulet as soon as Jiang Yanli is out of earshot. 

As always, Jin Zixuan makes an impression by being the best Jin currently in existence, but the Jins are terrible. JZX is working to advance his dad's ambitions, and as such he is currently Wei Wuxian's enemy.

Opening Ceremonies

There's a bunch of cultivators arranged for the opening ceremony. Later someone will say that this is more than 5 thousand people. Ok, sure.

As I've said before, it's best to think of it like a theatre production and assume the other 4,900 people are offstage or, you know, painted on the backdrop.  

The young lead cultivators from the four main clans are standing together. Nie Huaisang is trying out some new body armor.

The clan leaders are seated up on the stage, along with Jin Furen and Jiang Yanli. Unfortunately Jin Furen doesn't seem to have a personal name that I can discover. Her title Fūrén ( 夫人)  means she's the primary wife of the head of the family, according to this excellent meta. 

So “Madame Jin” is a decent translation...if you're French?  I feel like instead of English subtitles including borrowed words from French (”Marquis” in NIH), Greek (”Water of Lethe” in WOH), and other European languages, we could try borrowing Chinese words instead. Jin Zixuan's mom is titled, not named, Jin Furen. Since we don’t know her actual name, I'll call her that and abbreviate it JFR.

Wei Wuxian's childishness continues at the opening of the hunt, as does Jiang Yanli's encouragement of his childishness. I know she's had a rough couple of years, and it's understandable to want to baby her little brother out of a sense of nostalgia. But it's not good for him, and she shouldn't do it; she should encourage him to be more mature, just as she does with Jiang Cheng.

War Crimes Contest

Jin Guangyao says they're going to have an archery competition, and they're going to liven it up by endangering some prisoners. These prisoners are Wens in Wen cultivator uniforms, meaning they're not the noncombatants that were being hunted down earlier. But they’re still helpless people in chains. 

There are three different reactions when the Wen prisoners are brought out.  All the Jins are pleased, or neutral. All of the Jiangs, including Wei Wuxian, are upset.

The Nies and the Lans, what we see of them, are a little shocked, but not obviously upset. Based on those reactions, it seems like this is a maneuver that in-world is considered shocking and cruel, but not necessarily unethical or immoral.  Shocking, cruel displays of power are pretty normal in this world; remember when Wen Chao lit a Lan cultivator on fire just to say hello, and nobody complained? 

This whole scenario, of course, has been designed to provoke Wei Wuxian. One major goal of this event, and the whole reason for wanting Wei Wuxian to come,  is to get the Yin Tiger amulet.  Making him lose his shit in front of 100 5000 cultivators is a good step toward compelling him to hand the amulet over.  

We see Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli both signaling Wei Wuxian to keep it together, and he takes a step back and tries to chill.  

Meanwhile, Jin Zixuan seems annoyed by all this, and goes to take a shot at it, making it clear from his demeanor that this is easy and JGY is making a show of nothing. 

He hovers in the air and makes a perfect shot, pleasing most of the crowd and impressing Jiang Yanli. 

Then his cousin Jin Zixun taunts the crowd, challenging anyone to do better.  This presents a bit of a problem for Wei Wuxian. For the sake of the Wen prisoners, Wei Wuxian should just take this taunting and let the contest end, if no-one else is willing to take a shot. But for the sake of the Jiang Clan’s status, and his continued control of the Yin Tiger amulet, he needs to put the Jins in their place.  

Every Day is Blindfold Day

This moral dilemma is resolved with an abrupt tonal shift, where the humanitarian concerns of all parties seem to vanish. Wei Wuxian flirts embarrassingly with Lan Wangji and then goes as far over the top in besting Jin Zixuan as it's possible to go.

The flirting hits differently, incidentally, when you edit Jiang Cheng's annoyed reaction out of it: 

Lan Wangji doesn't seem embarrassed by Wei Wuxian's request, despite it happening in front of 100 5000 of their fellow cultivators. He looks Wei Wuxian straight in the eye for longer than necessary before turning away; it’s not exactly stern disapproval. We’ll get very used to this look, in Wei Wuxian’s second life. 

Fortunately, Wei Wuxian carries a blindfold with him wherever he goes, (gifset here), and he is such a good cultivator he can hit 5 parallel targets simultaneously without even holding his bow straight or tightening the string.

(OP fixed the angle of the bow for this gif, which is why everyone is standing on a hill in the background).

Everyone is pleased by this shot except Jins Guangyao and Zixun; even the Jin cultivators are clapping, and Madame Jin is presumably this happy any time Jin Guangyao’s plans go wrong.

With that they start the hunt. Jin Zixun challenges Wei Wuxian to do the whole hunt blindfolded. Wei Wuxian agrees, but the censorship committee said no, apparently, so we don’t get to see that.

Flute Hunting

We do get to see Wei Wuxian luring monsters into his nets by being too sexy for his robe, too sexy for his robe, and playing the flute.  

We also get to see Jiang cultivators looking puzzled while random monster roars happen in the woods around them. We do not get to see any monsters, which is probably just as well.

Jiang Cheng is annoyed and concerned, muttering "I told you not to overdo it" which means he didn't, you know, tell Wei Wuxian NOT to do this, just not to do it quite so well. Jiang Cheng knows what Wei Wuxian’s abilities are and he is making use of him, as he should, but he doesn’t have the courage of his convictions. 

Tree Confession

Wei Wuxian sees Lan Wangji and starts to say hi, but then he has a desaturated flashback to Lan Xichen telling him to back off, so he stops himself.  But then Lan Wangji comes over to talk to him.

Lan Wangji starts off talking to him about his latest anti-resentment musical discoveries, and Wei Wuxian pushes back, even calling him Lan Wangji, but gently.  Wei Wuxian asks "who am I to you?" and Lan Wangji turns the question right back at him, then waits a looooooong time, eyes downcast, while Wei Wuxian thinks of a serious answer.

Wei Wuxian says "I used to treat you as my zhījǐ" --which, as we’ve discussed before, is variously translated soulmate, confidant, intimate friend--with a strong meaning of "the person who truly knows me." Lan Wangji says "I still am." Coming from Lan Wangji, who NEVER says how he feels about Wei Wuxian or about anything, really, this sounds a lot like a confession of love. 

It definitely takes the form, visually, of a love confession, as Lan Wangji speaks, then gazes at Wei Wuxian while he waits for a reply.  Wei Wuxian's reply is this:

I don't think Wei Wuxian is oblivious (I'm speaking strictly of CQL, not MZDS, as always with these posts; they are different works). I think he loves Lan Wangji back, and knows it. But Chenqing and everything it represents are between them.

Lan Wangji is quite literally NOT his zhījǐ any more, because he doesn't truly know Wei Wuxian right now. He loves him desperately, but he doesn't know about his core, and hasn't accepted his cultivation method.  So Wei Wuxian answers his confession by showing him Chenqing, effectively declining to accept his still-conditional love.

Snake Measuring

Next we get terrible hetero courtship in the form of Jin Zixuan finding snake discharge on the ground and talking to Jiang Yanli about comparative snake measuring. Seriously: that is the actual conversation that they are having.

Jin Zixuan boasts for a bit, and then awkwardly tries to ask Jiang Yanli on a date. When she turns him down he gets mad, because he's a typical heterosexual dude even though he's secretly a delightful person...very, very secretly. Jiang Yanli, for her part, can't string a fucking sentence together to save her life whenever he's around, so she's not helping their mutual understanding. 

Lan Wangji attempts to hold Wei Wuxian back from beating Jin Zixuan’s ass yet again, but eventually JYL wants to leave, JZX tells her to wait, and WWX intervenes. Why doesn't Jiang Yanli have a maid or Jiang cultivator with her while she's on a date, incidentally? These kids are confused about whether they're doing feudal patriarchy or whether they're doing modern social life.

Jin vs. Jiang

Wei Wuxian jumps in between Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan, which JZX objects to. Jin Zixuan has no fucking business objecting and Wei Wuxian is 100% right, at this point. As soon as WWX shows up JZX should hand her off to her Shidi, bow, and leave her the fuck alone. Instead, he draws his sword on Wei Wuxian, and kind of on Jiang Yanli since she's right behind Wei Wuxian.  Fortunately, Lan Wangji blocks him. 

This instantly blows up into a Jiang-Jin Clan conflict, with Jiang Cheng unfortunately absent since he let his unmarried sister go off in the woods alone with the son of the Cultivaton world's most famous lecher. It looks like it’s a personal conflict, but since Jin Zixuan already told Wei Wuxian directly that Jin Guangshan wants his amulet, any arguments between them are part of a larger power struggle. 

Cousin Jin Zixun comes running up to start shit. Wei Wuxian pretends--I am SURE he's pretending--not to know who he is. The dude hassles Wei Wuxian every time he sees him; Wei Wuxian is a troll, and right now CJXZ is butting in to something that doesn't concern him. Rather than argue, Wei Wuxian insults him by telling him he’s not memorable.

Jin Furen shows up with several maids and cultivator dudes in tow, which is the proper way for a highborn woman to wander around in the woods. She also brings Clan Leader Yao, because if it's Wei Wuxian Blaming Hours, Yao is going to be there.  

I initially found the deep friendship between superhot Yi Zuyuan and dumpy Jin Furen implausible, but then I remembered that my lifelong bestie is a smokin' hot redhead with impeccable fashion sense, while I am a roly-poly nerd.  Friends don’t always match. Also, Jin Furen's actress, Hu Xiaoting, looks like this: 

...so she is actually hot in real life. Not as hot as Zhang Jingtong (who plays Yu Ziyuan) but literally nobody is as hot as Zhang Jingtong. Don't @ me, you know I'm right.

This is a heck of a long scene, so we’ll pick it up in part two!

They discover their daughter & son are in the same college class, and so they meet up over coffee....several times...trying to matchmake their hopeless, hapless kids, while bonding over their own terrible (former) taste in husbands. Who will Cupid strike first, the kids or the moms?

I usually don't post much but hear me out: about Word of Honor and change

We all know about the censorship situation in Chinese dramas regarding many things, but one of the most obvious is about the LGBTQ+ community, non-hetero couples are usually portrayed in the least obvious way possible or in a way that could be dubious enough that some people might still be able to call it a "strong friendship" What I noticed with Word of Honor is that it feels like the CHANGE, you know? Like, so far every cdrama has been following the rules by the book, and then comes WoH, with their characters that are just so catching and charismatic that you can't help but fall in love with them all, great stories, great everything and above all true and real PASSION for the story they were telling, you can feel the love everyone involved put in this. But the explicitness of the main couple, of Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu, the way these two were portrayed was so real and obvious that no one, NOT A SOUL, can claim there is only a "strong friendship" there and I think, from everything that I've been seeing about what the people living in the city where the concert is being held are saying, people are actually happy about that They are speaking about their "marriage" today during the concert as if it was a natural to happen in China, to have so many people coming to a city to see two men getting married on a stage, they are smiling and being happy about this. For god sake there are posters of them both wearing red like??? SO many moments in this series made us all gasp and be like "HOW did this pass censorship?? just... HOW?" and that boldness? The way the actors tried to defend their censored scenes in interviews, how they all fought to keep stuff that would have never been in another drama because "rules"? This is some powerful stuff and I thank them all for doing it, it's small, but I feel like this matters so much.

There are certain pieces of art that you just KNOW will cause change and I think this one is actually doing it in a way that matters, people are watching it and they are liking an obvious queer couple, the actors keep posting stuff that might get them in trouble in their social media, but they do it anyway, they comment and say things in TV shows that shouldn't be said because censorship and so much more. I feel like this show is the drop of water that falls down onto a river and creates larger waves, at least I hope some positive change might come from this regarding this whole situation.

hello, I've been thinking about a Wenzhou ten thousand miles of peach blossom AU where WKX is a fox immortal and ZZS a dragon immortal. WoH is basically WKX and ZZS’s love trial (to ascend and be a high god), in which WKX actually died when he fell to the cliff, and ZZS destroyed all of jianghu in revenge after forcing all his nails out. ZZS then decided to pursue WKX after they returned to heaven. Can you maybe write something that ended in WKX getting pregnant with dragon baby CL? thank you

A/N: imma level with you here Nonnie, I’ve never seen that show. It’s the one with Diliraba right? Yeah. No, I’ve never seen it. But what’s cracking me up is the thought of a dragon baby Chengling so you’re getting that this little ditty.

At the sight of them, Zishu feels his chest swell with impossible the sunny warmth of happiness and a never-ending well of love. It wraps itself around his ribs. Sitting tight and content around his swooning heart.

Just under the shade of peach blossoms, his beloved sleeps.

Cheek pillowed in the palm of his hand, Lao Wen’s beautiful visage is calm and untroubled in repose. The book in his other hand slips off, sliding onto the soft pillows with a gracelessly muffled thump. Nothing it seems, not even the gentle rain of pale pink petals that crown his long, silvery hair, can wake him.

Zishu folds his hands behind him, composing himself with a soft cough. Failing completely at hiding the smile that curls the corners of his lips, he steps carefully forward. Keeping his footfalls light, he approaches his Lao Wen. 

The loose fall of his dark summer green robes part to show off the way the sunlight catches the rich rust reds of Lao Wen’s tail. Zishu avoids the twitching appendage and goes to his knees, crawling closer to gather his Lao Wen into his arms. 

“Mm,” Lao Wen sighs, stirring into wakefulness with a quiet exhale. His dark lashes flutter as he blinks, eyes opening and looking up meet Zishu’s gaze. “Ah, you’re here.”

“Yes.” Zishu leans in, brushing away the petals caught in his hair. “Did you wait for me long?”

Lao Wen laughs, relaxing into the embrace. “No, and you didn’t miss much. Your son was just playing havoc on my hips, is all.”

Curling a touch over the swell of his belly, Zishu ponders on their babe currently growing in there. Would they look more like him or Lao Wen? Would they have more obvious draconic traits? Or would they be more fox-like?

Looking over, he finds that Lao Wen has fallen asleep once more. Wrapping him up tightly in his arms, Zishu thinks he doesn’t care. Their child will be their own person with the best parts of them both. And their child will be loved to the moon and back by parents who have adored him from the moment he was a twinkle in their eyes.

If I'm not mistaken you've now read/watched the three mxtx works and WoH. How would you rank them following personal preference? Which main couple did you like the most? Favorite plot twists in all four?

Yep, I did. I still have to read Faraway Wanderers though. Can't wait to.

This came out to be quite a long post, so I'll put it under the read more thingy.

Now, how would I rank them?

I'll have Tian Guan Ci Fu at the top, no doubts. It's my absolute favorite among all these four, and will probably remain my favorite even after I finally get to read the huge thing that's 2ha. It's the perfect balance of a story with no characters left unexplained (except for the minor ones and RIP Hua Cheng's backstory, why did mxtx rob us so much), of characters being unique all in different ways, and of a romance that, while being absolutely the main focus of the novel, is not overwhelming. For me, an aro/ace person, the romance written in TGCF is so good that it made even me stupidly happy. I don't get such big smiles on my face while reading my own romantic content.

This is the ONLY novel I've ever read that doesn't have a single character I hate in it. Only one, maybe two at most, that I dislike. That's it. Everyone's good. Everyone.

Then I'll definitely have Word of Honor. Just like TGCF, it's a really good balance between an interesting story (I was literally squirming in my seat while impatiently waiting for things to be revealed, enjoying every second of it) and a subtle romance that was still obvious enough to make me wonder what the hell happened with censorship in this drama. Not that I'm complaining though.

Almost all the characters are incredibly good. They have depth to them, all the main ones have either a satisfying backstory or a beautifully crafted development.

And this is it for the ranking. I wrote way more than I should have, but oh well.

After that, it's a tie between Mo Dao Zu Shi and Scum Villain. I don't want to favor one over the other, because I genuinely like them the same. Scum Villain is really underrated, and while I understand it somewhat, it's really unfair.

MDZS (and The Untamed) has a story that draws you to it, especially if you (like me) have an obsession with all things dark and spooky and terrifying like the demonic cultivation in this, like the whole mystery they have to solve with body parts leading them to the solution. The drama, as good as it was, really didn't do justice to the spook factor of using dismembered parts of a corpse to move around.

SVSSS is straight up weird, literally an isekai but make it Chinese. I think the best part of it is Shen Yuan panicking and cussing everyone out every time something happens around him, though... I really loved the story and the way it played out. I especially liked how the novel kept mentioning Proud Immortal Demon Way and compared the events of that book to the events that were happening in that book's world.

But why do I prefer Word of Honor to them? Well, it's simple. There's some aspects of the romance that don't resonate well with me.

WangXian is a beautiful couple, and they deserve all the happiness in the world (they have a canonic son!!!!!!!!), but Wei WuXian's initial obliviousness made me really uncomfortable at times. Not because he didn't know Lan WangJi was in love with him (the fool! thank goodness for Guanyin Temple), but because he kept teasing Lan WangJi about it while the latter was drunk. I mean, I get it. If you don't know, you don't realize what you're doing. But as a person that easily suffers from people making fun of me behind my back... it kinds struck a nerve. I still love them to pieces, though, they're so good together.

BingQiu, well... this is a rollercoaster of a couple. Again, I absolutely love them together, but some parts come off almost as scenes where consent is thrown to the wind. As a reader you know Shen QingQiu is willing and in love (gods, they married each other, I'd be a fool to say the opposite), but there should be a limit to how many times a willing person should say "No" in such a novel. This is mostly me being my aro/ace self, though. I don't really understand what goes on in the world of intimacy between people because I (literally) don't give a fuck, so I'm probably reading too much where there's too little. Don't take this as me not liking BingQiu, I'm in love with them and I desperately need more content.

Favorite plot twists, eh? Okay, big SPOILER ALERT from here onwards. And I mean it. BIG. SPOILER. ALERT.

Now, which main couple did I like the most?

Hualian. I don't even need to think about it. Bonus point because they're both out of their minds and the extras show it.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. I never have smiles so big and goofy in front of anything else, not even my own stuff. Hualian genuinely makes me happy.

Wen KeXing faking his death and telling basically everyone but Zhou ZiShu.

The villain being Zhao Jing; I was actually fooled and thought the main bastard of the series was Gao Chong.

The hairpin being the key for the armory. That was so stunning I had to pause the episode for a second and take a walk around the house.

Jin GuangYao being the villain. And being an amazing villain, on top of that.

Nie Huaisang. Fuck's sake, that man fooled the entire fandom just like that. I don't think many people realized he was the one behind everything.

The golden core transplant reveal. I'm sure that more experienced readers and viewers (aka people that had read/watched a ton more cultivation world stuff) had hints of it, but when I watched The Untamed I never read/watched anything remotely close to this genre. It hit me like a brick and I sat in front of the screen in shock.

SVSSS:

Shang QingHua being Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky. It's such a silly thing, but it made me pause for a good five minutes. I wasn't expecting it in the slightest.

The whole thing with the Old Palace Master. The man belongs to the dumpster he never got thrown into.

Tianlang-Jun not actually being the villain. Poor demon, he just wanted to continue with the questionable hobby of reading porn and daydreaming about Shen QingQiu's relationships.

I think I had another one, but it's late and I'm probably forgetting it.

TGCF:

Oh boy, where do I belong? Ah yes, the entirety of book 4. Took me out on the spot.

Jun Wu being Bai WuXiang completely blew me away. That was probably the biggest plot twist in the history of plot twists.

Also, Ling Wen knowing, and her being the creator of the Brocade Immortal.

Fu Yao and Nan Feng being Feng Xin and Mu Qing. For some reason, even if it's kinda obvious when you take a good look at them, it never clicked before being revealed.

On the same note, Ming Yi being He Xuan, and the Earth Master being actually dead. What a ride that arc has been for me.

One of the most important details, however... I got it myself. The ring Hua Cheng gives to Xie Lian. I see so many people saying that they didn't expect the ring to be his ashes, but I did something I generally can't stop myself from doing. I guessed something tremendously important by accident, something I do with many many books so I can ruin the experience for myself. I was literally sitting down, taking a break from reading (I devoured TGCF in 3 days, I needed that break lol), and all of a sudden this goddamn revelation descend upon me like the holy spirit, completely out of the blue. I just sat up, looked at the screen, and went "the ring is is fucking ashes, isn't it?", and completely ruined the surprise for myself.

So, I've finished reading Faraway Wanderers, because I liked Word of Honor so much. The thing is, if you truly want to understand Word of Honor, you need to read Faraway Wanderers, and a bunch of Chinese poetry.

Basically, I love reading as much as I love watching TV shows, if I had to pick my top 3 hobbies, as lame as they seem to the outside world, it would be reading books of any kind, watching TV shows of any kind and writing any shit that comes to mind.

So, in other words, I binge read Faraway Wanderers. And I was pleasantly surprised by how it was built. To be truthful, as much as I love watching anything, I haven't put much effort to watching Wuxia series nor reading novels.

I tried with The Untamed, and it just didn't work. And then, I tried watching Ashes of Love recently, and also didn't work.

I didn't have much hope for WoH. It just suddenly popped into my YouTube recommendations when it first aired, and I like Gong Jun in his other dramas, which are super cliche, honestly, but he is charming.

To cut the chase, I've been loving WoH so far, the characters are fleshed out and the action sequences are just enough. I can live with it being dubbed because it was a necessity for it to pass censorship.

They changed a little bit of Wen Ke Xing's background story compared to Faraway Wanderers, and from my understanding of the episodes that I haven't watched, they changed the ending dramatically.

Senior Ye has some golden lines in the book that wouldn't pass censorship by any means, but they managed to keep the essence in some of his jabs at ZZ and WKX.

One would expect that Faraway Wanderers was much more in the face about the BL than Word of Honor, but it truly wasn't. It did explicitly express WKX's sexuality, however, the buildup was pretty much the same, only getting a few kiss scenes and cuddling scenes here and there. Because Priest, to my understanding of the novel, wanted to show this inexplicable bond between true soulmates, where not many words are needed for them to understand each other and show they cared.

ZZ was aggressive with words towards WKX for the whole novel, but his actions were what mattered. They chose each other time and time again as a partner in whatever journey they were having. Even when their masks came off pretty early in the novel, they still chose each other. They pardoned each other's sins, and lived with them.

They never questioned the other choices. They never overstepped the boundaries that were truly important. They never let each other down.

WKX wanted to be selfish, wanted to strip ZZ of his martial arts as long as he got to live, but ZZ delivered a line that shook me to the core.

Others don't understand, do you not understand either?

Or something like that. WKX didn't want to break his trust. This was a relationship he valued a lot.

If there was only a relationship he valued above that, was the one to Gu Xiang, who he viewed as a younger sister. And I dare to say it that way, because in the extra chapters when he was wickedly pleading his way he said he thought Gu Xiang would accompany him forever. Because he said to Cao Weining that they grew together in a place that wasn't meant for children. WKX literally had to eat his own dad's corpse. Everyone understood that Gu Xiang was the only thing in this world he valued when he was the Ghost Valley Master.

Anyways, if the deaths of CW and GX were painful in the novel, I can't imagine how it will be in the series with it being right on their wedding day.

You know i went to work only because i wanted new computer. it's complicated and depressing story and if you don't mind me sharing it with you then continue reading and if you don't want it then just delete this ask ❤️ i had that privilege, i didn't have to think about anything but i lived with my parents and i was super depressed. But doctors still can't help him. My cat my only remaining friend died in the start of October. I think if i was more responsible she would have lived longer. I still didn't accept her death, i see her shadows all the time and i still talk to her when i get back from work. Out of habit. I have never found new friends and I am absolutely lonely because my mother works two jobs and is almost never at home. I'm always at work and that and you know some things like WOH have not allowed me to disappear from this world yet. So Mj. I feel you. I'm with you. Your tags on that post touched me to the depths of my soul and I want you to know that I'm here. somewhere nearby i'm with you in silent support.

So yeah. The only thing left for me is to find joy in little things like new computer and subscription to gagaoolala where i can look at another stories. Another people. And i can only hope that every story has its bad and good moments. So one day it'll be our turn to have happy things 💖

i rlly don't want to compare anything at all but i've just finished woh and i've fallen into a rabbit hole okay? but bcs this is the second drama i've watched from this genre and the first one being cql, i just kind of connect them together.

i love them both soo much they're both great shows. but i just have to say, the untamed rlly has the best OST ever. no drama will ever compare to it. and well.. i just kinda missed that in woh. like ofccc it's kinda unsicnificant. but it just shows to me again, what great of a fucking OST the untamed had. like not only bcs of 'wuji' (that song's been on repeat for over a year now) it's also all the other songs that just play in the background (the ones w/o lyrics and they just play during a scene yk) they are soo great. i literally downloaded them i just listen to them sometimes. it's soo good. the songs are just full of emotions without any lyrics. ugh i just love it. i mean it's also kinda rlly fitting cus music plays quite a role in cql.

Chinese mf censorship, fight me

Recent Chinese offerings have been very delicate and subversive in their approach to the gay-not-so subtext (Word of Honor or The Untamed) while attempting to avoid censorship. 

I acknowledge this and I do very much enjoy these shows and appreciate what must be a herculean effort on the part of production.

HOWEVER

Since the history of global cinema is plagued by desexualization of queer identity through a refusal to depict gay characters (in particular) engaging in acts of physical intimacy, it is unlikely that I will ever forgive Chinese censorship in this matter, even when they give us something as glorious as WoH. 

Showing gay characters but refusing to depict gay love in its physical form is an act of homophobia, suppression, and disenfranchisement. 

Period. 

Other Asian countries are homophobic, yet still allow their BL characters sexual agency. For sure, this is intended to titillate a het audience, but at least it is there. In its most mercenary form, boys kissing, holding hands, making out, and so forth is acting to desensitize a culturally ingrained, taboo, visceral, disgust reaction in watchers. 

Thus the more gay physical affection is shown positively on screen, the more those watching become comfortable with the idea of (oh I don’t know) two men walking down the street holding hands. 

That is BL’s cultural endgame.  

China’s relationship with BL is particularly egregious because they once did high heat BL. Yeah it mostly killed the gays, but it was there, and they were on a path (like Japan, Korea, and Taiwan) towards greater acceptance of BL depicting loving happy gay relationships. 

Until censorship. 

It is my personal choice not to critically plaudit homophobic BLs, even beautiful and subversive ones. Why should I extend China the grace that they do not extend me and my people? Pretty, graceful, charming hate.. is still hate. 

Until they allow gay characters the sexual self actualization and physical affirmation of basic human decency, I will blog about the Chinese BL that I love, I will post funny memes, I will enjoy it, but I will never stop being critical that our boys can’t just kiss. 

Because as flippant as that may sound, 

THE KISSING MEANS SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT. 

And the fact that they can’t is an act of disgusting suppression.

TE CREO?? especially te creo omg it's one of my favorite leonetta moments ever and just....they're everything to me and this episode perfectly captures early leonetta i love it SO MUCH

23. If you were to rewrite season 1, what would you change?

so i haven't rewatched s1 in a while so i might forget stuff but here are a few ideas

the temptation to just. write tomas out is huge lmao, but instead of doing that i'd have him actually face consequences for his actions. my main problem with tomas is not even his behaviour (even tho, yes, it is) but the way the narrative NEVER paints it as bad. i'd want the show to condemn his awful Nice Guy persona and have him get some actual development. i'd want him to properly apologize to vilu, ludmila and fran for what he put them through and honestly i think AT LEAST fran or ludmila should be allowed not to forgive him because what he did to them was just. unspeakable. i'd want him to realize how his actions were not ok and work to do better exactly the way leon did, maybe i wouldn't hate him that much if he actually did that

regarding the tomas/violetta thing, i'd want them to kiss way earlier so vilu could properly get closure way before the finale, and tomas would have time to realize it was time to move on as well, especially because for a looong time before they brought back the love triangle vilu was only thinking about leon so it didn't make any sense to give her closure AFTER all of that. so yeah, leonetta break up, something something, the tomas vilu kiss happens as a way to get closure and say goodbye to each other, tomas starts to move on, leonetta write podemos together in their dreams and even tho they don't go back together in s1 because they both need time alone and away from each other the telepathic dreams started so we're all good

speaking of men facing consequences for their actions, i want german to rot in hell for the way he treated jade. i want him NOT to cheat on her (especially when he didn't even really get angie's consent before kissing her lmao), i want him not to marry her out of...idk i don't even know why he was dating her when he clearly didn't feel anything for her, i want him to treat her like a person deserving of respect, but since it's probably too much to ask, i want the narrative not to paint this as normal because "oh well it's the evil girlfriend". jade was a victim all along and i'll die on this hill, yes she did bad things yes she often went too far but this woman had absolutely NOTHING in her life expect a toxic relationship with her brother, a toxic relationship with her fiancé, and a fucked up father so. i want the show to at least acknowledge that

He was standing there, covered in flour with odd shaped macaroons in his hands. She decided not to comment. She got back to work. He looked at her clearly not happy, "Purrrrincess, I made macaroons for you." Still nothing. He frowned,"Purrincess." "I'mmabusy. Getlost." He didn't understand her word vomit."Repeat it again bugaboo." She started the music and sang:

Damian was reserving everything for his anniversary when Chloe came in. No, he didn't give her permission. He simply said,"Get out." She looked like she was going to argue, but he threw a bat-glare her way which made her recoil a bit. Key word A BIT. He stood up and used his finger to point at her as he sang:

"Damikins, I-"

They continued, shutting them:

"Marinette you want me to sing with you?" She ran a hand through her hair.

She made gestures with her hands. Her phone tinged. It was message from Damian,"Be at the Eiffel tower at 7 tomorrow morning." She smiled.

Damian's phone tinged with a message from his malak. "Ok , but why?"

Chloe chose the moment to interrupt but before she could say anything, his face formed a scowl. He started singing again.

They both sang with the music. Equally furious. They pushed the respective intruders towards the door.

Adrien took her advice and leaved her alone but she knew that's not the case, he's sitting on the balcony, listening to her. Alya entered her room for girl's night along with Rose, Alex and Juleka. She sang loudly. Her friends humming.

Damian was panicking. She is not going to get mad. Will she? He sighed. "Baby bird. Go to sleep. You are going to miss your own date." Dick warned. He took a deep breath to calm his nerves. Then he went to bed.

They were sleeping when there was a knock on the trap-door. Marinette was a heavy sleeper, so she didn't wake up by it but Alix did. "Who there?" She sleepily mumbled. "I'm Adrien." The voice, no, Adrien said. "Everyone is sleeping. It's a girls night. Go away sunshine." Alya mumbled from her seat. "But-" Rose woke up and sat at her spot,"You should go Adrien you can hang out with Marinette later." She said in her usual squeaky voice. "We don't want to here." Juleka added.

Damian was peacefully sleeping but it was interrupted by a knock on the door. Both Damian and Dick woke up immediately and assessed the surroundings for any threats. There was another knock on the door followed by a loud,"Damikins..." Both of them sighed.

It's 2 in the morning,

The rain is pouring,

Haven't we been here before?

Marinette woke up to many voices, likely arguing over something. She rubbed her eyes,"What's wrong." She sleepily said between a yawn. "It was Adrien." Alya said. Marinette's eyes shot open as she carefully listened to a light thud on the balcony. It was probably raining outside. She sighed as she went to the balcony, her friends following,"Chat Noir. Last. Warning." She deadpanned. "Ummm... purrincess. I wanted to ask if we could play UM-" He never finished the sentence. Marinette threw a pot on his head. He groaned as he stood up, only to see Marinette standing there, eyes closed WITH ANOTHER POT IN HAND. He ran with his tail between his legs. "Let's go back to sleep." She said yawning and they went back to bed.

Damian didn't open the door,"What do you want?" Chloe's shrill voice came from the other side,"I had a nightmare." "Do you think I care?" He replied, venom lacing his voice. "I am scared of the lightning." She was trying to be intimidating but she was failing. MISERABLY. "We both know that is not true." He deadpanned. "Open please." Damian ignored her and went to his bed. "I have important places to be tomorrow." He said as he pulled out his headphones and played soft music. Dick doing the same with an equally grumpy face. She left eventually and they both dumped the headphones to get some peaceful sleep.

Damian woke up at about 5 am. He then told Dick his plan and left for Eiffel tower at 5:30 am to set his date.

Marinette was sleeping peacefully. A package arrived her home. Sabine came upstairs and called her,"Marinette there's a package from your boyfriend." Tikki nuzzled her chosen's cheek. She then said in her ear,"Marinette you're late." She immediately shot up. She glared at Tikki but the voice of her mother came again,"Marinette, sweety. There's a package from Damian. Now, fully awake she went downstairs.

She was greeted by Adrian as she reached her mother. She groaned.

She cut whatever he was going to say,"Have you got no shame you lookin insane. Here we go again." She didn't even look up. Adrien closed his mouth and went back through the way he came from.

Rose said,"We should go to our home then. We shouldn't disturb them."

Alya nodded,"Let's get change."

Adrien heard everything (well, the fact that she was at the Eiffel Tower) and decided to go after his princess.

He led her to the elevator. They reached the top of the tower neither noticing that Chloe and Adrien had seen them. He led her to the special place. He untied the handkerchief. She gasped.

He frowned,"I just heard that she is going to Eiffel Tower and ran to catch up with her before she gets away." "She always denies the fact that you are dating and you are the opposite. What type of relationship do you have?" Chloe huffed at the antics of her two best friends.

They reached the top. Marinette and Damian were standing there. Marinette had covered her mouth with her hands. Damian was smirking. Their was a blanket set up with a pot with beautiful flowers in the middle and a picnic basket. The sun was rising giving a magical effect to such simple thing."It's beautiful dove. Thank you."

       They were very close for both of their tastes. Adrien shouted, "You are looking beautiful M'lady."

Chloe took this as an invitation to speak,"Damikins what are you doing with Mari? What are you doin' with Damikins Maribug?"

Both their expressions became dangerous. Damian started,"Haven't I made it obvious?"

"I am not going to be surprised if Alfred is here too." Marinette said. They both glared at them. But they didn't even flinch. "No matter how much we try they are not going away." Damian said sighing."I bet they recorded everything. Plus point is we will get adequate photos because Drake is a good photographer."

Marinette also sighed,"Let's eat and hope they will not come nearer." They didn't. Marinette and Damian clinked their glasses together,"Happy anniversary malak." "Joyeux anniversaire mon démon"

Three Ships: am going with the ones that have been giving me The FeelsTM  recently

WenZhou [Word of Honor] - if you’ve been following me, i am evidently going through it. they are just so good. i’ve been considering if i should read the novel because it seems quite different and i want to know the dynamic there? but do i have the attention span for it? idk. let’s see. all that matters here is that they hurt me in the best way possible

Lin Shu/MCS & Xiao Jingyan & Mu Nihuang [Nirvana in Fire] - after my rewatch of NiF, the emotions i have over these three people (and honestly, the rest of the characters as well), just crashed over me again. they love each other so much? and each time i curse MCS for doing what he did, but at the same time i know where he is coming from. it just hurts so much, seeing Nihuang embracing him and hoping for a future where they could be together, seeing Jingyan going through all that and then? ending up alone once again. they just hurt me. and honestly i like all interpretations of their relationships, but my personal take on it is that Xiao Jingyan is head over heels in love with both Lin Shu and Mei Changsu, while Mu Nihuang loves him as her dearest friend, as a platonic soulmate that she could spend her entire life with - and Mei Changsu? honestly, he is so torn inside i don’t think he knows himself what he feels, except fear and overwhelming love for his friends that he doesn’t want to face. In my mind, i see Nihuang and Jingyan supporting each other, sharing the burden and the heartbreak. (also at this point i want to mention Lin Chen because god, does he care for Mei Changsu and that last episode just broke me all over again) thanks for coming to my ted-talk, i don’t think i will ever be done with it.

Cha Cha/ Li Jia/Shi Cheng [The Journey Across The Night] - another very good trio, and Vishie could talk about them with more eloquence than me, but i just? love their dynamic so damn much? please just let them be in love with each other? i think it is one of my favourite friendship groups in any drama. they are such a delight and go through ups and downs, have fun together and there is just so much love radiating from the screen when i watch them. it’s a shame there is barely content for this drama because i need more people to appreciate it and i want to thank Vishie again for recommending it. chacha my beloved, you’ve never left my mind ever since

Currently Watching: The Sleuth of The Ming Dynasty - after the ending of WoH and finishing my NiF rewatch, i’ve been in a slump and don’t really feel like watching a new show? so am slowly continuing TSoTMD - so far it still needs to grab me properly but it is a solid and entertaining drama so far? i love my cutie Tang Fan or course, but honestly right now i just want to get properly into Wang Zhi because he??? i love this shady bastard. and my Oirat duo are my absolute faves, if anything happens to them i will kill everyone in this room and then myself. 

Currently Reading: i’ve talked about my native nations poetry anthalogy often already, so am not gonna go into that again. but hey, i got back to slowly doing research for my course on materiality in viennese modern design (1880-1930). currently i am reading Dagobert Peche by Max Eisler which is hilarious, because when i started reading this i was wondering why it was written so fairy-tale-like and subjective, until it dawned on me that this Dr. Eisler was a friend of Mr. Peche? So he just wrote a biography on our boy Dagobert and he has a...questionable way of describing him; don’t we all just describe our bros as a ‘gothic countenance of anguish made of ivory’ as said bro lies in his bed being sick with a fever? idk, you do you, dear Max. but please stop talking about his godly hands and elegant demeanor, if you really wanna convince me y’all are just guys being dudes. am here to learn about ceramics, damnit.

Man, I quiiiite liked the show. I didn’t expect to like it as much; esp. coz these reboot thingys never really work for me, usually the characters are just there (literally) in name, with absolutely none of the things we loved about them in the original. But this series did a really good job of bringing back everything we loved about Zoya and Asad; and even made it better (Asad is not a perpetually angry asshole this time, just merely withdrawn and exasperated, but fully in control of his emotions. Except when it came to his feelings for Zoya.............. He was fully driven by his heart there and *siiiiiiiiigh* ngl, it got me a lil swoony. 🥰🥰🥰) The callbacks with the scenes/dialogues and character quirks were suchhhhh a delight, it really was like our same old characters, just set in an alternate universe. Also, bringing back Dilshad/Tamaatar was just such a balm to my heart. I wish we’d seen Asad interact with them more though. Oh well, that’s for S2, I guess! (Also crossing fingers for finally getting my recommended dose of “Ammi, woh BECHAARI nahi hai!!!!!!” then, coz honestly.............. It’s literally my favt. part of the show.)

I found where the show falters is the whole.............. Spy thing. Like....... It’s kinda ridiculous to think of, imagine the govt. recruiting Virat Kohli or Mary Kom or any other eminent sportsperson of the country as a spy and sending them on full-on dangerous missions, lol. Kuch Bhi. Every time Mandira Bedi showed up on the screen I was rolling my eyes coz this whole angle was just tooooooo far fetched. Also you’re right about it being predictable as hell; it’s coz they literally gave it all away in the trailer. It would have definitely packed more of a punch if we just saw unexplained shots of WHY Mandira Bedi is keeping track of Asad/Zoya until they revealed that he’s a trained spy at the midpoint.

Another thing I wasn’t toooooo keen about was the randomness of some of the characters thrown in. Like, Zoya’s parents and Sana (MY FAVE!!! MY ACTUAL FAVE!!!!!!!! PLS GIVE ME MORE SANA I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!!) and Zoheb/Anika and all work; even Salman and his irritating family/gunde, and the annoying Phupi contributed to the plot properly, but why was the cast so bloated with so many randos on Asad’s side? Like what was the point of bringing back Rashid and that whole plot point of him leaving Dilshad for Shireen (whom we saw for LITERALLY ONE SECOND)??? Ayaan toh phir bhi theek, he had a purpose to serve towards the end (not too much, but thank god, kuch toh dikhaaya; the fact that Najma turned to him when she couldn’t reach Asad and he just readily showed up willing to do what he did, lol..... I loved it.) but like...... That ex girlfriend plot??? Kyun? So ainvayi. It served no real purpose (other than one callback in the last ep ka car scene where Zoya asks him about the ring.) They even brought back the actor who played Farhan (Imran’s brother/Nikhat’s haraami husband) and I was like oh, yeh BHI hai iss plot mein, but he was just there to be a chamcha to Mandira Bedi? Hein? Why cast this dude specifically and confuse us if he had nothing to do with the character from the show?? Isse achcha toh you shoulda brought Vikram back as Imran and have him be the secret Pakistani spy.

So yeah overall, I’d give the show an 8 out of 10, maybe even an 8.5? The aesthetics and production quality and stunts and everything were on point and executed really well. The title track is awesomeeeeeeeeeeee and I’ve been humming it ever since I saw the trailer. The acting and chemistry toh was evident from the trailer itself, and it delivered splendidly. Everyone here knows that I’m not really a KSG fan, but honestly no one else can play the character of Asad like he does and have THIS level chemistry with SJ. Everything I hated about his character in the original was done away with and I really was able to wholeheartedly ship the couple. Surbhi toh........ Kya hi kehna; Zoya is a role she fully inhabits and I’m just so glad to see one of my absolute favt. Tellywood FLs return, and that too in perfect form!!!!!! And the fact that it was on the web and we finally got one of our Tellywood OTPs kissing for realz? I’m ecstatic, lol. 🤪🤪🤪 So yeah, on the whole, I really liked the show, it was a good binge watch for me (who’s been away from Tellywood for the past few weeks, and esp. anything of QUALITY..........) I’m so glad S2 has been confirmed, I hope we get it within the year (max by this time next year) coz I really need to know how that cliffhanger resolves and how their relationship progresses!!!!!!!!

This is something I've been thinking about doing for a while now, and now I've finally did it! Journey songs comes on shuffle as they do and I discovered a lot of songs that refrenced sex somehow and I thought to myself "how many of these do they have??" because it just felt like they kept coming.

This list will focus on Steve Perry's time with the band from Infinity to Trial By Fire, his solo work and Neal Schon's first solo album. Before going in to this I thought that FTLOSM would be an album full of sexual refrences because it has a lot of sexy melodies, and well that one song you know, but as it turns out it doesn't have a lot. It's like Steve Perry decided to put all the sexual references in one single song. There are som other semi ones though.
