Different anon, but I think what they mean by Warcraft got worse was in early 90s games, which were written by metalhead writers whom were closely following warhammer and basically did white humans vs evil orcs whom like many fantasy orcs were based off western stereotypes about "Asiatic Hordes" like the Golden Horde.

In the early 2000s, the Metalhead writers decided this was getting stale, so retconned the orcs to be manipulated rather than evil and had them redeem themselves. They also got more racial coding as did their allies like the blatantly Native American inspired Minotaurs, the tauren.

Similarly whilst humans, elves and dwarves were still all white, they were also shown to have many bigoted and self righteous individuals whom were shown as badguys.

However in the 2010s, the metalhead writers left and Warcraft got new so called "Woke" writers.

These supposedly "Woke" writers doubled down on the racial coding for the monsters like giving tauren, giant feather headdresses. They also re-retconned the retcons to make all the monsters completely evil and remove any moral ambiguity from white characters, like making corrupt human politicians, simply brainwashed victims.

But hey, we got white gay characters out of them, isn't that woke! /sarcasm

when i was a kid i was really REALLY into fantasy books and comics but interestingly ive noticed as an adult im like. too picky about it? i still read and love a lot of fantasy fiction but while when i was a kid i loved it because of the fantasy worldbuilding but as an adult, 99% i like it Despite it all LOL like ive noticed i prefer most fantasy stories to not dwell too much on magic systems or whatever because i just dont care EXCEPT

except. recently i have discovered that actually i do really like fantasy, low or high, soft or hard, but you need one thing. you need your main character to really REALLY care about some hyperspecific aspect of your fantasy worldbuilding and make it the foundation of the story's scenarios:

either make them autistic and really into monsters or magic or whatever (a certain tasty dungeoning manga that i have been reading recently has taught me this) OR

make them a fucking business major and do real life financial stock market bullshit but like. in fantasy medieval times with wolf goddesses (spice and wolf <3)
