soooo it sounds like they might be re-releasing the sims 1 & 2 soon, which negates a particular chunk of my sims zine regarding how neither game is supported by the publisher anymore and how you can still access them....... but either way i'm excited to finally share this big 60-page labor of love with everyone ❤️

i just sent the final version off to a badass local printer for a quote on getting some physical copies printed & bound, and the digital version of the zine will be available for free/pwyw as a token of gratitude to all the amazing sims modders and custom content creators that have been putting out their hard work for free for the past two decades.

i've been working on this zine in some shape or form since at least 2016 and i can't wait to finally share it. it's a love letter to a video game series that has been a big part of my life for almost as long as i've been alive and i hope you'll enjoy it ❤️

the dynamic of demigods thinking which other demigod is the most powerful is always amusing to me because. like, we know the big 3 kids are all the most powerful. That's just a fact of their universe. And then we know nearly every character views Percy as the strongest demigod, and most people are very rightfully intimidated by him.

and you look at the powers of the Big 3 kids and there's Percy, but then you realize Nico is just kind of objectively more powerful than him but simply chooses to hang out in Percy's shadow like he's Percy's scary dog privileges. Like, the two of them are pretty equally capable of causing multiple different apocalypses. Nico just also has like four different instakill powers and it's not like he doesn't use them. He very much uses them! Not infrequently, even! And they don't seem to take a significant amount of energy from him! And other demigods are pretty intimidated by both of them! But Nico makes a conscious point to keep his cards close to his chest and not let on exactly how dangerous and scary he can be if he wants to. People are already scared enough of him without knowing anything about him and he doesn't like that. Percy doesn't think about that nearly as much, and so usually just goes in guns blazing and that's part of why he's considered a wildcard. And then Nico himself puts Percy on a pedestal, so those who do know more about Nico's abilities then presume Nico knows something they don't about Percy that implies Percy is even stronger than him.

And even on a meta level Nico's narrative role requires him to be functionally more powerful than Percy, because he very often serves the purpose of getting Percy out of situations he can't handle on his own. That's just part of his function as a character! But also narratively he can't overshadow Percy so he just takes a backseat of his own accord and that's very amusing to me.

imagine you are YUKI TSUNODA and you are constantly HARASSED for being violent (you're really not) and harsh with words (not more than the others) and you change THREE TEAMMATES in three years and they all get to be CONSIDERED for the RED BULL MISSING SEAT???? and you don't!!!! and you're stuck at the SUGAR FREE REDBULL TEAM for FOUR years and you get a year-end bonus of 22 EUROS... and all because the TALKING CORPSE hates you.

Brutal honesty vs Soft hypocrisy

In fact, I never had a problem with the characters who are assholes while the narrative treats them like the ones, without attempts to justify or whitewash. Bad guys exist for a reason, they play an important part in the plot.

But I can't stand the characters who are assholes while they're totally woobified, portrayed as misunderstood heroes / perfect victims, and their misdeeds are constantly downplayed / ignored by narrative.

This is the situation I have with Stella and Stolass.

On the one hand, Stella is a rough ridiculous caricature of what an abuser supposed to be. From such she, essentially, got only the name and a few basic traits (breaking stuff, yelling, etc.) so you could project on her whatever you want. I'd assume she acts more like a bully than an abuser. But what exactly prevents her from being believable representation of such a serious, complex topic?

Honesty!

Stella never* pretends to be good, neither lies about her intentions nor tries to increase attachment in her victim. She proudly hangs all her red flags out and screams at the top of her lungs, 🚩 "Hey, I'm abuser!" 🚩 And... probably, people like this do exist (people are different). Although they're minority for one simple reason: honesty wouldn't let them fool anyone and escape punishment. (Add to this Stella's lack of magical skills, power, brains, and then you'll see her writing is complete nonsense.) Oh, and don't you dare spread the "It's Hell" excuse on me! I've made a whole list of reasons why this point doesn't have any sense.

On the other hand, Stolass is much more subtle. He speaks civilly, stays calm (most of the time), tries to make a good impression. Stolass tells you how flattered he is that you invited him to the party; he treats himself to a drink and sings on a stage with you. So you'd think everything's fine… But as soon as you turn away, the owl will hide in a corner and bitch with himself about how petty your social event is. And despite this we're supposed to SIDE with Stolass because allegedly he isn't as petty as anybody at the anti-Blitzø party since he came there purely out of ✨politeness✨! Yeah, it's sooo polite to show up and act like a hypocritical jerk! Apparently the dumbass never heard about the polite refusal option.

Conclusion: Choosing between obvious asshole and woobified asshole I'd prefer the first one. At least in that case nobody's trying to force me into sympathy for a hypocrite.

*The ONLY truly manipulative moment from Stella's side was the fake hug in "Mastermind", and even that was pulled out of nowhere and then thrown into nowhere immediately. I guess that was made so people would compare Stella with Mother Gothel while they have nothing in common (sadly).
