Troy's Return Explained by the writers
Where did the idea come from to resurrect Troy, because this is an actor in Daniel Sharman as well as a character you guys had never even worked with?
CHAMBLISS: It was something that lan and I threw out half-seriously when we were trying to think of ways that we could have an antagonist who would really put the question front and center to Madison, to Strand, to Daniel: Have you guys really changed? Have you really escaped your past? Can you really move forward? And it felt like having someone return from their past seemed like the way to do it.
And the more we talked about it, the more excited we got about that persor being Troy Otto. And you're right, we'd never written for the character. We had never worked with Daniel Sharman. So we scheduled a phone call with him and we introduced ourselves and pitched him what we were thinking and why we wanted to bring the character back, and what it is that he would get to explore with Troy Otto. And we had a really great conversation, and Daniel said he was a character that he loved to create and always wished he could explore more, so he was excited to come back and were able to make it happen
GOLDBERG: We were just huge fans of his and the character, even though we had not worked with him before. And then what was really exciting is when we knew that he was in and Daniel was interested in coming back, we talked about it with Colman and Ruben and Danay [Garcia] and all the people that had been on the show when he was in it previously - and their excitement was huge as well. Everybody was excited to revisit this chapter of the show and to expand the Madison-Troy story, especially Kim and Daniel. They loved the dynamic and the dance that those characters did together in the past. And so they were really excited to get in there and explore this next chapter for Madison and Troy.
Honestly, I'm just happy Daniel was equally excited to come back as Troy. You can see in his S3 interviews how much he loved Troy even after Erickson axed him in S3 to get his closure because he would be replaced. I do hope we'll get Daniel Sharman's insights about Troy because it's his views that made me understand Troy better from an emotional and personality standpoint than what Erickson then gave us about him. It's complex and not cookie cutter and Daniel is known to play such characters and choosing these types of roles (Isaac Lahey, the Weeping Monk, Kelly Lord etc,).
Also the writers are a joke. They could've done this with Troy so much sooner since they seem to like Troy too. But yeah 4 episodes to go.

Hi River I really missed your old view-n-drag of Fear the Walking Dead. Did you see the finale? I would love to know what you thought!
The only thing I have to say about that show is that it was awful how Dave Erickson and the very gifted people who make the show itself, from the actors to the gaffers, were shit on by AMC. Handing the reins to hacks who had no idea how to build from where Erickson left off and tell a story that, at the very least, made some kind of sense, was one of the most embarrassing and wasteful things they ever did.
They turned this dark comedy/family drama into Morgan's Mighty Rescue Rangers and didn't even bother with little things like, oh, logic, character development, story development, a narrative of any kind -- they just played some kind of hack version of pin the tail on the donkey for every episode, every season and it looks like no one was able to stop it. It was like, the worse it got, the more AMC stuck by it. So bizarre.
I'm actually laughing though, how *someone* at least, must have gone:
"Oh wow, the only time this show was popular and well-liked was season 3, so let's bring back that guy Madison clearly killed and have him show up for no discernible reason with a kid who can't act and let's name-drop Alicia because she's clearly still alive after that bite and the radiation and hacking off her own arm and wandering off in a delusional fever and do you think anyone would notice her hand kinda grew back if she just showed up at the very end, again, with no explanation and hey, they can just drive off into the sunset because everybody loves a happy ending during the zombie apocalypse."
"What about Morgan?"
"Who?"
If someone ever writes how White Men Fail Up in Hollywood, Gimple, Goldberg and Chambliss would be worthy subjects of a chapter.
Thank god its over.

The Franchise Files - The Nun II
Okay kids. This is the last entry in this series until 2025 when The Conjuring: Last Rights comes out. It was directed by Michael Chaves and written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing and Akela Cooper. Which makes me nervous because you know the old saying about too many cooks in the kitchen. Taissa Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet return, along with Bonnie Aarons who plays our demon nun. It is set in 1956.…

The Nun II (2023)
Tumblr media
I wasn’t looking forward to The Nun II for the same reason that I wasn't looking forward to Annabelle: Creation in 2017. Like 2014's Annabelle, The Nun was an inferior, largely uninspired Conjuring spinoff. To my surprise and delight, this sequel is far better than its predecessor. It even sort of goes back to address some of what made the original so underwhelming in a way.
Four years after the events at Saint Cartha’s monastery, the Church dispatches Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) to investigate a series of deaths across Europe. These gruesome incidents, all eerily similar to the ones attributed to the demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons) follow Sister Irene's friend, Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), who now serves as the caretaker at a boarding school that used to be a church. Though seemingly defeated, the demon hides inside him.
One of the reasons I was so skeptical about this sequel is that it felt like there wasn't anything left to tell. We saw how Maurice became “infected” with Valak at the end of the first movie and the scene during the end credits reminded us that we knew he was going to be possessed by the demon because we heard about it while watching The Conjuring 2. Well, it turns out some elements of the story were missing. Enough that it would've kept us up at night if this movie had never been made? No, but the film’s last act contains quite a few surprises that make me say “This was worth coming back to”.
While this film’s status as a sequel to a prequel means we’ve seen the monster enough times for it to be less frightening than it was in 2016, director Michael Chaves brings some neat tricks to the screen. The film's best scene has Sister Irene running down a dark street at night when she suddenly stops in front of a magazine stand. The wind blows the pages over and over, the images revealed combining to make what looks like a shadow emerging from the floor. I’d tell other filmmakers to rip off this scene, but it’s so visually striking and memorable that the theft would immediately get called out.
I’m also going to give this film a recommendation for its ending. Early in the film, Sister Debra (Storm Reid), a young novice accompanying Sister Irene on her quest confesses that she has difficulty believing in the miracle of transubstantiation (the transformation of wine into the Blood of Christ). I don’t blame her, specifically because of the way The Nun concluded. In the first encounter with Valaak, our heroes have this big vial filled with the blood of Christ and they use every drop. I know it’s a powerful demon that does all sorts of scary stuff but I kept thinking to myself “Guys! This blood is a hot commodity! Save some for later!”. That concern is addressed here. Now, before you think this movie is going deep into Christian theology, understand that the screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing and Akela Cooper doesn’t explore this idea very much, instead taking some religious concepts and spinning them to their own needs in a way that I think is (dare I say it?) kind of cool and fitting for this expanding cinematic universe.
In several ways, The Nun II is what I would call a “Box Set Movie”. I don’t think you’d ever buy the DVD/BLu-ray/4K and add it to your shelf unless it was so you could have all of the Conjuring universe together, or because you got it as part of a box set. "The Nun II" is not as scary as it should be but it has enough memorable scenes for the scales to tip in its favor. Enough that maybe you wouldn’t mind seeing it again if you happened to add it to your collection. (February 14, 2024)

The Nun II (15): "The Eyes Have It, The Eyes Have It"
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "The Nun II". #thenunmovie. By the books horror sequel.... quiet, quiet, quiet, NUN! 2.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “The Nun II” (2023). I’ve just about caught up with the cinema films I’ve missed due to my recent holiday: “The Nun II” was the last of the easily accessible ones! And it’s another sequel where I didn’t see the original… but again, it really didn’t matter. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is called back into service by the Vatican to…
