The global musical phenomenon, MAMMA MIA!

photography by: Alex Syrian
Mamma Mia is back in Melbourne, celebrating the 10 year anniversary since its first tour came to a close. The production has been recognised in this year’s Helpmann Award (Australia’s equivalent of the Tony Awards – The live theatre version of the Academy Awards) nominations for Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and Best Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.
Set on a Greek island paradise and inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s heart-warming tale centers around a young bride-to-be. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.
Starring in this brand new Australian production is an amazingly talented cast lead by Natalie O’Donnell as mother-of-the-bride Donna Sheridan and Sarah Morrison as Donna’s daughter and bride-to-be Sophie. Alicia Gardiner and Jayde Westaby star as Donna’s best friends Rosie and Tanya. The 3 unsuspecting fathers are played by Ian Stenlake, Phillip Lowe and Josef Ber with Sophie’s adoring fiancé Sky played by Stephen Mahy.
The Australian production is Directed by Helpmann Award winner Gary Young, with the creative team also including Choreographer Tom Hodgson, Musical Supervisor Stephen Amos, Set Design Linda Bewick, Costume Design Suzy Strout, Lighting Design Gavan Swift and Sound Design by Michael Waters.  This exciting new production of MAMMA MIA! is produced in Australia by Michael Coppel, Louise Withers & Linda Bewick.
It goes without saying, if you are a fan of ABBA, you will love this production of MAMMA MIA! You can expect most of ABBA’s classic hits in the show, interwoven into a hilarious tale of young love and old flames.
The lead cast are quite strong and very amusing. The ensemble is just great! Their energy, characterisation and dancing, a standout. You can expect to see, lots of colourful costumes, some acrobatics and also a whole ton of Adonis abs on display.
The choreography is very sharp. The set and lighting, very simple, yet effective.
In all, the show is a lot of fun and the ending in particular packs a powerful punch of hits that will result in people dancing in the aisles, out of the theatre and all the way home.
A little warning, the entr’acte at the beginning of act two may catch you off guard and result in a need for a change in underpants.
Melbourne is so lucky to have so many professional shows touring with such talented stars. This show is a must-see, even for those who have seen it previously with the new cast and creative team reimagining the show to create something brand new for fans of ABBA’s music, both young and old.
Tickets on sale: http://www.mammamiathemusical.com.au
Venue: Princess Theatre, 163 Spring Street, Melbourne

Soooo.....I’ve oddly enough got stuck in a pickle with my Petyr & Sansa story and have strangely and surprisingly found myself writing a Sea Patrol story for Mike & Kate - who knew!
This is a little Australian made TV show that I don’t think I fully appreciated at the time. I can’t believe I missed the very handsome Ian Stenlake (triple threat act, sing and dance too) and of course our Lisa McCune is a national treasure (also a triple threat) yet play some tuff Navy characters getting themselves in all kinds of drama.
I’m in love and a little addicted despite the fact that the show ended in 2011 - so I’m not sure who is still reading them but I’ve just binged all Mike & Kate fics I could find. So I’m off to play with these characters for awhile and I’ll come back to my Petyr & Sansa in between.
