A U.S.-born citizen was arrested in Florida on Wednesday and charged with illegally entering the state as an “unauthorized alien.” Twenty-year-old Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez was detained for a day at the request of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, despite his mother producing his birth certificate and Social Security card at a court hearing.
Leon County Judge LaShawn Riggans inspected the birth certificate during a court hearing on Thursday, confirmed it was “an authentic document,” and said she found no probable cause for the charge, the Florida Phoenix reported. the modern world restricts ease of movement through tracking and monitoring, yes; but there is something to be said for how travel has only become a mass opportunity - available to virtually all members of the middle and upper classes - within the last ~100 years. not only technology, but caste/estate/class & religion/gender/profession (any living off the land type deal) etc. posed massive obstacles to free travel in the past. for some people in our modern world those material realities still do. it's good to be aware that it's a rather privileged position to hold when the main thing stopping you from going wherever you want is something administrative
Alright, after some thought, I'm going to try to respond to this with some grace, since I think you're trying to make a point about equity which I'm sympathetic to.
And I will first make clear that I am neither in favor of romanticizing the past nor of talking about history as the relentless march of progress.
However, I think you may have mistaken my point about immigration/emigration for a point about leisure travel. I'm traveling for my work, not for tourism. Leisure travel has indeed become more financially viable for a number of people in the last century.
Immigration has not. I assure you that my Polish great great grandfather who (according to my grandfather) was a stowaway on a steamer leaving Russia and showed up in the US with only skills as a shopkeeper was not traveling with great financial privilege. Nor were my Czech ancestors who arrived a generation earlier as farmers. Even outside of my own family experience, I don't find it particularly fair to say that, for example, Irish farmers using their last penny to travel on the lowest deck to take a gamble escaping the famine were traveling with great financial means.
Even going further back, The Return of Martin Guerre (the book I mentioned) is about a peasant who walked from Spain to France to start a new life with an assumed identity.
And this was all fine because immigration was allowed for those of limited means.
I suspect that you think "something administrative" means paperwork. But, even putting aside the cost of that (getting copies of official documents, authentication, background checks, fees etc.), it also includes means testing. Each time I've applied for residence in an EU country, I've had to provide bank statements and proof of income to even be considered for approval. And here I'll give you an acknowledgement of my privilege: I have a strong passport. For those from the global South, proof of means is expected even for tourism purposes. The administrative barriers include built-in measures to prevent poor people entering countries. No pre-existing job and financial assets? No residency permit/visa/green card.
There is no simply walking over a border or spending your last money on a boat ticket and hoping you can make it with just skills. So no, immigration has not become more available to those with limited means. I find that people with strong passports tend to underestimate this because they can enter countries for leisure relatively unimpeded.
And yes, I have the privilege of being from the global North, having a strong passport, and being paid to do intellectual work (which includes grants and fellowships that allow me to pass the means testing). And I'm an unmarried woman who has my own means, which would have not been true half a century ago. That doesn't bar me from commenting on how these barriers impede movement. If anything, someone in my position being put through so much scrutiny to get residence for even a year should show how incredibly difficult it can be for people who have substantially less than me.
#im going to grant that you probably dont follow me#and dont know that im going places essential for my profession#not wherever i want on a whim#if i had the means to do that i would not be in a long distance relationship#i go around asking for grants every time i need to travel#i couldnt do it without that

“I wanted to tell them, ‘Where are you going to take him? He is from here,’” Lopez-Gomez’s mother Sebastiana Gomez-Perez told the outlet after the hearing. “I felt immense helplessness because I couldn’t do anything, and I am desperate to get my son out of there.”
“It hurts so much,” she said through tears.

[Photo ID: White box with rainbow border. Text reads: 'Statement on DMV Policy Change. LGBTQ+ advocates from around the state organized and mobilized in great numbers this past legislative session. Through actions like protests, letter-writings, die-ins, and more, we defeated 21 out of 22 anti-LGBTQ+ bills attempting to move through the Florida legislature. One of these bills, HB 1639, sponsored by local representative Doug Bankson, was particularly egregious. It sought to redefine "sex" in a way that excludes transgender, non-binary, and intersex people, and to prohibit a person's state identification documents from reflecting their gender identity. As the bill was heading towards its downfall in the legislature, the Deputy Executive Director, Robert Kynoch, of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) released a memo to county tax collectors in late January rescinding previous department policy (IR08 - Gender Requirements), which allowed for Florida residents to change the gender marker on their ID to accurately reflect their gender identity. The memo wrongly excludes gender identity from "sex" in an effort to subvert the democratic process to redefine sex - and prohibit gender marker amendments - absent legislative authority. In a similar way, the legislature continued its attacks on the rights of immigrants and people experiencing homelessness in the form of HB 1451. This bill, which passed and was signed into law by DeSantis, restricts the acceptance of community IDs issued by community organizations to immigrants and individuals experiencing homelessness. Community IDs are essential for demonstrating that a person is a resident and member of a given community. It is already tremendously difficult for these groups to acquire valid identification, and this law imposes yet another barrier to identification.' /End ID]

[Photo ID: White box with rainbow border. Text reads: 'Statement on DMV Policy Change. Accurate identification is a human right; we must demand access to legal authenticity for all. Advocates for transgender individuals, immigrants, and people experiencing homelessness must stand together in the fight for equitable access to accurate identification. We demand that the FLHSMV restore their previous IR08-Gender Requirements policy to ensure that transgender people can obtain accurate IDs. Furthermore, we demand that legislatures take action to protect trans people's ability to obtain accurate identification as well as protect the acceptance of community IDs. The Man from a Different Universe
In the chronicles of unexplained mysteries, the story of the Taured Man stands out as a baffling and enigmatic tale that has puzzled minds for decades.
It all began in the mid-20th century when a well-dressed and confident Caucasian man arrived at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, eager to embark on his journey. However, it was at the airport's immigration desk that this ordinary-looking traveler would reveal an extraordinary claim that would forever shroud his identity in mystery. Upon being asked the routine question of his country of origin, the man, with unwavering conviction, declared that he hailed from a place called "Taured." To the bewilderment of the Japanese immigration authorities, there was no record of such a country. The traveler was asked to produce identification, and that's when the plot thickened. In his possession, the Taured Man held a plethora of official documents, each more puzzling than the last. A passport, driver's license, and a stack of business cards – all issued by the non-existent nation of Taured – were laid out before the astounded officials. The documents were meticulously crafted, bearing all the hallmarks of authenticity, complete with visas from multiple countries, hinting at a history of international travel. As if this weren't perplexing enough, there were other curious details that further fueled the mystery. The authorities, grappling with disbelief, questioned the man about his homeland. His unwavering response was that Taured had existed for a long time, situated in the border region between France and Spain. This contradiction, however, only deepened the enigma, as no such country appeared on any maps or records. It was as though the Taured Man was a visitor from an alternate dimension or an elaborate hoaxer.
The confusion escalated as the man was escorted to a hotel room, still under the vigilant gaze of Japanese immigration authorities. While they were determined to solve the riddle of his identity, they were left with more questions than answers. The next morning, an eerie and baffling development occurred – the Taured Man and all of his belongings, including the Taured documents, had vanished without a trace. There were no signs of forced entry or exit, leaving investigators and airport personnel dumbfounded. It was as if the enigmatic traveler had simply vanished into thin air.

Jessica Schulberg at HuffPost:
But a state prosecutor said that because ICE had asked the local jail to hold Lopez-Gomez, the court did not have the authority to grant his release. “This court does not have any jurisdiction other than what I’ve already done,” said Riggans. “I wanted to tell them, ‘Where are you going to take him? He is from here,’” Lopez-Gomez’s mother Sebastiana Gomez-Perez told the outlet after the hearing. “I felt immense helplessness because I couldn’t do anything, and I am desperate to get my son out of there.” “It hurts so much,” she said through tears. Lopez-Gomez was reportedly released Thursday evening after protestors gathered outside of the Leon County jail, where he was being held.
Lopez-Gomez was charged under a recently passed state law that made it a state crime to illegally enter the state. The Florida Immigrant Coalition sued state officials earlier this month, alleging that the law violates the authority of the federal government to oversee immigration law. A federal judge temporarily blocked the law on April 4. State prosecutor Kimberly Thompson did not respond to a request for comment regarding the reason for Lopez-Gomez’s arrest. The Homeland Security Investigations Office in Tampa issued a 48-hour ICE detainer for Lopez-Gomez on Thursday. ICE did not respond to an email asking why a U.S. citizen was subject to a detainer. “This is what persecutory and poorly written state laws in Florida lead to,” Thomas Kennedy, a policy analyst at the Florida Immigrant Coalition posted on social media on Thursday. Lopez-Gomez was born in Georgia, but lived in Mexico for most of his life, until returning to Georgia four years ago, his mother told the Phoenix. He was previously arrested on Sunday in Georgia and charged with driving under the influence, but was released after his family presented his birth certificate and Social Security card, his mother said.
More mass deportation lunacy at the hands of the Trump Regime.

The Secret Teachings Of All Ages PLATE 7: The Atlantean Temple
In the Critias, Plato describes in detail the divine foundation of the Atlantean Empire, originally known as Posedonis. The golden age preserved in myth and legend, when the gods walked with men, depicts the zenith of Atlantean civilization. The demigods of the ancient world were the Atlanteans, to whom every civilized nation owes an incalculable debt of gratitude. In the British Museum there is a remarkable document -- known as the Troano manuscript -- which was written over 3,500 years ago by the Mayas of Yucatan, containing an authentic account of the cataclysm which sank the continent of Atlantis. This priceless document contains the following statement according to the translation by Le Plogeon: “In the year 6 Kan, on the 11th Mulac in the month of Zac, there occurred terrible earthquakes, which continued without interruption until the 13th Chuen. The country of the hills of Mud, the land of Mu, was sacrificed; being twice upheaved it suddenly disappeared during one night, the basin being continually shaken by volcanic forces. Being confined, these caused the land to sink and to rise several times and in various places. At last the surface gave away and ten countries were torn asunder and scattered unable to stand the force of the convulsions, they sank with their 64,000,000 inhabitants.”
Before the Atlantean continent was submerged, the initiates of the Atlantean Mysteries, carrying with them the secret doctrines entrusted to their keeping, immigrated into Egypt and other parts of the earth where they would be safe from the impending catastrophe. Thus their secret teaching -- with its priceless value to subsequent ages -- was preserved. They established centers of learning and promulgated the code, clothed in the language of symbolism, to such as they deemed worthy to receive it.

Would you rank the skam wlw seasons? and could you justify the rankings? I am interested in your opinion. sorry my english :)
Your English is fine! And sorry for the late reply, I just finished s2 of skam españa so that I can answer this properly
1. Fatou (Druck s6)- now this is me being completely biased, but watching Fatous season live honestly was so life changing, I've never seen a black main character be so portrayed in a beautiful and caring way in Germany, and I honestly adore Fatou. I love that her season didn't deal with a coming out, but that she was already an out and proud lesbian, and I honestly LOVE how they portrayed her and Kieu Mys culture. For me, when it comes to black sapphics and sapphics of colour, I feel like they always make their culture a point of conflict, but with Fatou and Kieu My, their sexualities and culture could just coexist without any problem, and that is so special to me. And I absolutely love Kieu My, I love how well fleshed out she is, how we learn more and more about her throughout the season, and how she's more than what she portrays, how she just wants to be seen and not have to be perfect and please everyone all the time, how much pressure she puts upon herself just to make everyone happy, and so much more, I also love how they used her social media to document how and when exactly Kieu My stopped performing and started ro just be herself. Also back to the culture, I loved how they referenced Fatous, Kieu Mys and Avas cultures, it felt like it was made for bipoc watchers, and not to educate the white audience, and that is what made it so authentic imo, because as a black person, I don't need explanation for certain things, like for example when ava explained how mailin behaved at the protest, I immediately understood why she was bothered by it, and so did fatou, and that was realistic, its the small things, but that made me relate to the characters so much more, or when fatou face timed her relatives and relied on her dad to translate to her, these moments are so special to me. I also love the symbolism throughout the season, from Kieu My being the axolotl and Fatou the tortoise to the astrology references to Kieu My being the ice queen and Fatou the warmest person ever, how well they complemented etc etc. Also: " Kieu My, du bist so schön. Ich hab mir ne Liste gemacht an Dingen die so schön an dir sind. Wie du zum beispiel immer deine ohren hinter deinen haaren versteckst, wie du so eng mit deiner Familie bist, und dass du so krass gut mit Horrorfilmen bist. Aber am meisten lieb ich wenn du lachst. Weil dann seh ich dich. Und wie viel liebe in dir ist."Like hello???? Also, the entirety of Sonntag, 13:28, and how they related and bonded with each other through their experiences of being a child in an immigrant family. Generally, I love how much care was put into this season, and that's why Fatous s6 and kieutou will always be on top for me. Also, it's the remake where I don't need any translations for lol
2. Anaïs (Wtfock)- now I know the writing has been disappointing since ep7, but honestly, I am sosososososo grateful to have Anais as a main character in a skam remake. I honestly love her, I love how loyal, caring, and kind she is, and there's nothing that could make me hate her, like that's my nigerian sister, I honestly never thought that we'd get nigerian sapphic rep, and I'm so here for it. As for Anobbie, I love how their development was shown from ep1 to 6, especially ep3, that ep felt like it was straight out of a rom com, from anobbie fleeing together from that Fries place and getting closer to the subtle flirting of Bobbie, to Bobbie looking out for and helping out Anais at the party and with her friends drinking away her dads alcohol, to Bobbie opening up to Anais about her dad and showing her the place where her fathers ashes were sprayed, to Anais and Bobbie getting closer, to Anais arranging a date meeting with bobbie, to Anais playing "I'm gonna make you love me" and making Bobbie dance with her, to Bobbie finally kissing her, like it was so beautiful to watch. Also, I love how anobbie complements eachother and how theyre exactly what the other person needs, Bobbie makes Anais feel free and able to stand up for herself and feel like she's herself, and Anais makes Bobbie feel safe and provide a sense of stabilty, they really adore eachother and would go to great lengths to protect eachother, and I honestly love to see it. Also they reminded me a lot of kieutou, and alone for that they're high on the list. Also, just like Kieu My, I love how fleshed out Bobbie is as a love interest, she's such an interesting character that you want to know more of, and whether you love her or hate her, you pay attention to her, that's how interesting she is and im so here for it. And after druck, they're the remake where I need the least amount of translation for lol
3. Cris- (skam españa s2)- I just finished watching it, and omg, crisana literally invented gay staring, from their first meeting their eye contact was so insane, it got me giggling and kicking my feet lol. I really liked the season, I loved how reassuring and supportive Cris friend group is, how they were there for her every single time she had problems with Joana, and generally they seem like such a sweet friend group, and now i see why they're most peoples fave girl squad. As for crisana, they were so cute, I love how much they adored eachother, and I really love how reassuring cris was with joana at the end, telling her that she won't run away and that she'll be there for her. I also loved howbwe could see just how much cris cared for joana, like she cried in almost every single clip after joana disappears. honestly sometimes forgot that this was an evak remake lol, but I think it did the OG justice
4. Lola (skam france s6)- I don't remember much from lolas seasons except that it was veeeeryy dark, and that she could never catch a break, like why did they make her suffer so much? I feel like her and Maya could've had more development because their relationship felt rushed to me, but they were really cute, and I really love the scene where Maya draws on lola while she's laying there crying, it feels to intimate and special. Also, just like Bobbie, Lola is a polarising character, and I love those types of characters, especially female ones
5. Maya (skam france s9)- this never happened, mayla are still happily together while they work on their issues through proper communication, lola never broke up with Maya, and they still have their tattoo together
But honestly, this was so disappointing, the first time a LI got a season, and then we don't even learn anything about the LI at the end, it feels they just made the season to have an excuse to break up mayla, but we already knew that
