The Night Flora Went Silent.
“The flowers seem to glow tonight.”
“Pardon?”
Arin's gaze flashes behind him, revealing that he was indeed not alone.
“These words ring true.” The woman in scarlet pushed her voice in curiosity, peering into the eyes of the young man leaning on the balcony. “They have a magical air to them, dont you think? Are you their keeper?”
Arin raps his fingers on the metallic poles. “..I care for them like a hen to her chicks, ma'm.”
He shifts uncomfortably under the woman's piercing gaze.
She lifts a small goblet filled with tinted liquid, offering it to him. He timidly takes it, hoping the gesture would give the air, or, the flower's air, some slack.
“It is not like men of your status to be attending a ball.” she smiles sweetly as he tilts the goblet to his lips, averting eye contact.
“I tend to the flowers. Not something to proclaiml on the hilltops, but its a life worth living.” he says. The woman grins, twirling her hair a little bit before resting her elbows on the balcony fence.
“Tell me, young man, can a plant fall in love?”
Crickets hum from the garden. Arin lets the goblet rest, taking in a small breath. “Everything here is alive. The very rocks may sing if the world goes silent. There's not much to it, but if you pour into something, surely it will be returned. I can't say the same for people.” the crowding of music and chatter grows all too present for Arin. He looks to the ground, a short fall from the jut from the palace.
“But you know what its like-” her smile turns into a knowing grin. “-I've seen how you look at the princess.”
Arin throws his palms up defensively, a little too high, but also an act of surrender. “Ma'm, any man would be lying if they said they didn't have it for that girl.” he rests his back against the rails.
“But none quite know her like you do.” She stands upright, swimming from both postures.
The sounds of wind rustles the arrangements of hundreds of flowers.
“Ma'm, you've got me all tied up and making assumptions that just aint right.” Arin looks warily out to the fields again, this time the colors seem to manifest together in one swoop.
“Oh you are so right. Poor fellow, no young man should be courting a princess at such a low status,” she clicks her tongue. “Tsk tsk. Perhaps the king should have watched where he let his daughter go, don't you think?”
Arin's vision was starting the blurr. Fire burns him from the inside out, yet there is no flame.
“Whats.. Why is this happening?” the weight of gravity is crushing, tipping him off the railing- the one thing that was meant to be a barrier between the closed off balcony and the welcoming embrace of the flowerbeds below.
“I'm very sorry. I am but following orders, young one. I pray that the ground you indeed pour into will return your love.” She gives the necessary tap on the back to send the poisoned man spiraling to the earth below before disappearing back into the palace.
That was the night Flora went silent.
The bed the man lay in was one he designed, one with truest of love. Made with something no human could return. Completely covered from head to toe with ivy and clover. Loyalty rooted so deeply into the ground so man could ever hope to dig it out.
Plants are, in fact, alive. They do have love to give, they just lost their voice.

Seeing Faces in Clouds, Inanimate Objects, and Other Related Phenomena
Over the past couple decades, there have been random news stories about people who swear they see Jesus or the Virgin Mary in various objects. Two years ago there was a story about a man who swore the Virgin Mary was coming to him through showing her image in a reflected pattern of Christmas lights on his living room wall. Back in 2006, a man in Texas claimed the face of Jesus was etched into the bottom of his frying pan. There was also a woman who believed the Virgin Mary had blessed her grilled cheese sandwich with her holy face.
Tumblr media
Essentially, seeing faces in clouds is a rather uplifting experience for the person experiencing this phenomenon. This phenomenon can be linked to something known as spiritual synchronicity. Synchronicity is defined as an experience of two seemingly unconnected messages that when put together are of great significance. This is actually a Jungian concept, but it is something that spiritual people attribute to one’s “spiritual awakening.” Again, synchronicity could be explained away with pure psychology, but it brings into question “is there any such thing as coincidence or is it actually fate?”
Tumblr media
A great example of spiritual synchronicity is the experience of seeing the same number repetitively. The 11:11 phenomenon is a popular one among new agists, and you probably have heard of the 23 phenomenon due to modern pop culture (the movie Number 23, among other works). In fact, there are people whom I am rather close to who hold spiritual significance to certain numbers. If they see this number, this indicates that something good is going to happen or that they are making the right decision. If they do not see the number or see a number opposite to it, they are making the wrong decision. This is a more frequent occurrence than most people even realize. Perhaps you have a favorite number or “lucky number”, too? This is merely the same thing as perceiving faces in clouds or seeing messages in inanimate objects. Feeling luck or attributing meaning to a number is the same thing.
Tumblr media
For thousands of years, shamans have walked this earth. There are shamans from pretty much every culture on this planet. Shamans are put simply – wise men and women. They are believed to have spiritual abilities, i.e. they can see into the future or travel to other planes of existence. They can have dreams of the future, but they also employ tools from nature in order to see messages from the spiritual side. This is many times called divination and can be seen in the ritual of “throwing bones”, in which a shaman tosses a set of bones onto the ground and “interprets” the images seen in the pattern of the bones.
Tumblr media
Tea leaf readings are used in the same manner, and inevitably is the reader’s experience of the images seen from the random patterns of inanimate objects. Clouds are also interpreted by some in a manner of divination known as “cloud scrying”. So when we see faces in the clouds are we actually calling upon an ancient method of contacting the spiritual plane?
But to play devil’s advocate (the psychologist), all of these shamanistic practices could be considered a form of apophenia or pareidolia…seeing significance in otherwise logically insignificant objects.
Many psychologists explain this type of phenomenon away with the term apophenia. Apophenia is defined as “seeing messages or meaning in random, meaningless objects.” To those who do see these faces in the clouds and messages on inanimate objects, these images do not see like purely random or meaningless. In fact, these images seem like divine messages in many ways. That’s where the spiritual collides with the psychological. There can be much discrepancy between spirituality and psychology, especially in this type of phenomenon.
Tumblr media
But if we were to subscribe to the psychological concept of the “faces in clouds” phenomenon, we might also come across the theory that this experience is a sign that is a precursor to schizophrenia. For example, paranoid schizophrenics are said to experience delusions and hallucinations. These delusions are thoughts that have no real meaning or relevance in reality, but to the person experiencing these delusions…they are quite real and meaningful. So essentially, seeing faces in clouds and attributing a spiritual significance to them could indicate that one is schizophrenic or potentially heading in that direction.
Tumblr media
Pareidolia is similar to apophenia, as it again is the experience of a person finding meaning or significance in a random stimulus. Often pareidolia is linked to religious images but has also been linked to dead celebrities (i.e. Elvis Presley seen in the clouds or in other objects in nature).
Even though apophenia and pareidolia are described as an experience that is rather common, they are also portrayed as a psychological concept that could quickly indicate the presence of other problems in one’s brain. There is a thin line between a fleeting experience of apophenia or pareidolia and schizophrenia, just as there is a thin line between madness and genius. In observing and researching the artistic aspect of apophenia and pareidolia, we can see that many artists experienced this phenomenon of seeing significance in inanimate objects and meaningless patterns.

1) Thanks to @talentpiper11 in the comments for giving us the correct answer:
That guy is connected to the plane’s intercom system via a headset with a long wire (the “leash”) and is there to confirm to the pilot things like “the wheel blocks have been removed, you can drive now” and “there are no baggage carts in your blind spot”. Source: https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/94130/what-is-this-guy-doing-while-walking-along-with-the-moving-plane-at-the-fra-airp
2) I love the idea of a plane being a "flight risk."

Debatable Utility Magical Boon item:
Spoon of Hydrokinesis
Upon downward (bulgeward) thrust, attracts the affected fluid into its built-in fluid basin.
Upon upward (pitward) scoop, propels the fluid backwards, relative to position of its bulge.
Strength of the hydrokinetic force depends on wielder's power invested into the scoop. Chance of spillage and splash damage decreases with higher impulse control.
Higher levels of control can be attained through continual use and attunement to user (ergonomics).
A spoon's only objective in life is to make soup go upwards, and it knows this. That's why when you put one under a running tap it blasts the water way high. The spoon thinks there's suddenly TONS of soup to deal with and it freaks out.

there’s usually a cybertruck parked a block away from where I work, and recently whenever I walked passed it’s space and see it there, I give it a little pat on the front end of the hood. I guess I’m just saddened and a little empathetic of the fact that you can’t choose who made you or who controls your life, so you shouldn’t judge someone just because their dad is a weird, evil billionaire. I mean, isn’t that what we learn ins like every piece of media ever??

How to Apologise to Inanimate Objects (and Why We Do It)
It’s a scenario we’ve all experienced: you turn a corner too quickly, clip a doorframe with your shoulder, and, before you can even process the pain, the words tumble out: “Oh, sorry.” Not to the person behind you (there isn’t one) or to yourself (that would be logical), but to the doorframe. The inanimate, unfeeling, utterly oblivious doorframe. Why? What has compelled you to show remorse to a…

14 year olds shipping discourse is inbreeding with itself to make the discourse equivalent of a brachycephalic bulldog at this point. They're inventing new extremely vague moral purity categories at a rate nearly equivalent to the Mormon church

* For the record btw a paraphilia by definition is just any sexual desire classed as "unusual" by the dsm, which can include anything from apparently getting horny about imagining yourself as a vampire (?) to being attracted to fictional characters, to being attracted to trans people. It's not an issue unless it has the capacity to cause real harm to yourself or others, at which point it becomes a paraphilic disorder
