Three Out Change!! (1998), Jump Up (1999), OOKeah!! (1999), OOYeah!! (1999), Supercar
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a blaze of exclamation points and all-caps, Supercar transformed the face of Japanese popular rock. Their influence is felt over pretty much every 21st century Japanese rock group, and yet, listening to these works over two decades later, even as socially and geographically isolated from their original context as I obviously am, one feels that the band’s appeal hasn’t really changed. Much (but not all) of the band’s work prior to their electronic turn is ruthlessly pacey and heedlessly fuzzy, loveable for its anthemic directness and propulsive joy.
Supercar’s debut Three Out Change!! was bloated and ambitious (weighing in at almost eighty minutes) and yet strangely without excess. Packed with raucous riffs and power pop choruses, it’s a marvel just how little one might be inclined to skip or cut. My esteemed buddy Ian has named this one of his favourite Japanese rock records ever – and, with its soaring mix of alt-rock, shoegaze and power pop, it’s so easy to see why.
Follow-up Jump Up took a breather. Much mellower in parts, Jump Up teased the electronic stuff that would take over later releases but also remained rooted in the anthems and propulsion of Supercar’s debut. Sure, none of this is quite as heedless as Three Out Change, and nor is it as ground-breaking as the group’s later indietronic noodling, but it’s still great, fuzzing fun.
Then we come to OOKeah!! and OOYeah!!, a pair of records recorded in the same sessions and released on the same day. Both, again, are brash, straightforward and really fucking fun works, though OOKeah!!, with its filthily stomping, richly hazy anthems, is the better of the two.
Supercar aren’t the only band from the late ‘90s praised for redirecting the trajectory of Japanese mainstream rock, but they are, for me, the best. There is so much thrill and looseness in this music, such richness of sound and tightness of songwriting. Even twenty years later, they still sound really, really good – much better, in my opinion, than the equally-lauded likes of Mr Children and Quruli. And the best bit is that Supercar were only just getting started: their later, more weirder electro stuff brought even greater wonder.
Pick(s): ‘TRIP SKY’, ‘SATORI’, ‘Daydreamer’, ‘HeLP’

if we were together on a rooftop, what would we be doing? - depending on the time of day, we would either be cloudgazing or stargazing :]
what type of music keeps you grounded? - well the go-to artist is lemon demon and apparently his genre is synthpop, indie pop and indietronic

Sunday Album Club / STRFKR – Parallel Realms
Track: Together forever
