A New Story Coming Soon and Updates

Albacon

Albacon is coming up the weekend of September 13-15, 2024. The convention takes place in Clifton Park, NY, BUT it is also a fully hybrid convention, which means you can attend online from anywhere in the world! Well, time zones ARE a thing, but you get what I mean.

When I say fully hybrid, I mean that panels may be in-person panelists, or online panelists, or a blend of both. I know that at least one I'm on is very much a blend. Albacon does this very well, and the cost for an online membership is only $15, so well worth it for the weekend. We run two tracks of programming, plus readings, and a few events. We also have a Discord (doesn't everyone?).

Currently it looks like I'm reading at 5pm on Friday, and yes, that will be broadcast as part of the online attendance. I'll be reading from the story that was recently accepted into the "Yay! All Queer" anthology from Inkd Publishing.

The full program schedule is not available publicly yet, so I'm not including times on these, but right now it looks like I'll be doing four panels:

AUgust turned into a mess. My CageBlade Regency spy-thriller thing now wants to be 5+ chapters and I just...c'mon brain, REALLY?

I have a new sideblog, @deiwrites, for some of my other writing stuff. Feel free to jump over there, that'll be more of the "writeblr" stuff and my original work as I get around to posting more of it.

I have another short story in an anthology on Kickstarter! If you like explicit sapphic short stories, "Improvisation" will be in the Impulse anthology by Inkd Press. If you think of it as a sapphic CageBlade fantasy story, you wouldn't be off base at all.

I have almost an entire month's worth of plans for Kinktober, but that's likely not going to happen. Y'all might get 4-5 CageBlade stories, a couple Apothecary Diaries, and that may be it, because of... well, that whole original writing and publishing thing.

Haddie swore. No wonder Dad had been calling. “Tell her I'm fine. Just looking for Liz.”

“And Dr. Aaron?” Terry sounded relieved that she didn't go off on him.

“How do you know him?”

He swallowed audibly. “Well, I mean, he's been a constant in these demon groups. A bit of a fanatic. But I got worried, and asked if anyone had seen a friend of mine around this sighting. He messaged me immediately and started demanding that I put him in touch with you. Said he knew you from last winter. That was the ski trip, right?”

Terry had posted a description of her in the forums. It didn't matter. The fight outside the hotel had to have attracted some attention, though she'd had pink hair part of the time. She opened her mouth, about to ask Terry if he'd heard anything about the fight outside the hotel, and stopped. Wilkins would be after her shortly. The FBI wouldn't just let something like this go. She'd killed someone, no matter the circumstances.

“Haddie?”

“Huh?” She stared at the building where the rave would be happening. She needed to find Liz.

Get past those guards.

“What about Dr. Aaron? Do you want me to give him your number?”

She did want to know about the demons. He'd been suspicious of her and her powers, and had disappeared right after the fight. “Yes.”

He paused and she could hear him typing. “So what's going on? Still haven't found Liz? I mean, this could be serious. The more I look, the worse it gets. Missing people, on top of the suicides. One mom swears her son is in a mental hospital because of these raves.”

That sounded about right. Whatever the song did, she could imagine it driving her crazy. “I'm about to go into the rave now. I'm hoping to get Liz out. I'll let you know.”

“You're alone?”

“Yes.” She'd rather have Dad with her.

She peered at the building where the rave would be. If the guards were looking for her, likely considering the attack at the hotel, then she'd have to scout for a back way in. Before, she'd planned on walking in as if going to the rave, then scoop up Liz — and Matt.

“Maybe you should just call the police.”

She thought of a swat team facing down demons or the fanatical yellow-hazed men, with Liz in the middle. “Not yet.” This needed to be quiet. She looked into the mirror at the spray of pinkish brown covering the right side of her hair and leaving a shock of white down the left side of her face. Not very stealthy, Haddie. Maybe she had a hoodie in the back from last winter.

Fun Facts About “God’s Truth”

Good morning, all ya’all! I meant to post more this month, but got bogged down by various WIPs. Anyway, on May 17, the “Detectives, Sleuths & Nosy Neighbors” anthology by Inkd Publishing released. It featured my historical crime story, “God’s Truth.” It is the seventh story in the Lady Sheriff Series. If you’re interested in buy the anthology, you can do so here. Whenever a story of mine is published, I like to do a Fun Facts post on what inspired the story and some behind the scenes tidbits about it.

As mentioned above, “God’s Truth” is the seventh story in the Lady Sheriff Series. While you can pick up any of them and read a good story, I did write them in a certain order. But many of them have been published out of order, and a few who haven’t sold at all. You never know what an editor/the readers might be interested in. Two that haven’t sold have been used for my current novel, and two I still hope to place somewhere.

In previous posts, I’ve mentioned how various historical women were the inspiration for Sheriff Claire Williams (Lillian Holley, Florence Shoemaker Thompson, Jennie Walker). Today I want to shine a light on Maud Collins, who was the first female sheriff of Ohio. A mother of five, she had worked alongside her husband as a jail matron, while he served as sheriff. She was appointed through Widow’s Succession, after the murder of her husband, and fulfilled the remainder of his term. Sheriff Collins took a more active approach to her job, like delivering prisoners to the state penitentiary to conducting several murder investigations. In 1926, she ran for sheriff for herself and won, beating out two male candidates. She served until 1930.

“God’s Truth” features two characters, who are hobos. During the Great Depression, many people were out of work and lost their livelihoods. Some became hobos, they lived in shanty towns or small encampments, they road the rails, and did odd jobs to barter for food. My grandmother, who was a teenager in the early 1930s, remembered hobos calling. Her parents fed whoever visited. If my great-grandfather was home, their visitor was welcomed inside for a meal and he’d talk with them, make them feel at home. If my great-grandfather wasn’t home, my great-grandmother would serve their visitor on the back porch. My grandmother recalled that a cat was drawn on their fence, which was a sign to other hobos that a kind lady lived their and people were welcome. This family tale found its way into this story.

When the Great Depression began, Herbert Hoover was president and he received the public’s scorn for the hard times everyone was facing. In 1928, there had been a campaign promise made that there would be “a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.” Obviously, this didn’t happen. Well, his opponents used this against him in the 1932 election and the damage was done, and he’d live in the shadow of his successor Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Shanty towns were called Hoovervilles, an automobile with a horse hitched to it was called Hoover Wagon, newspapers used as blankets were called Hoover Blankets. What was forgotten about Herbert Hoover is that after both world wars, Hoover came to Poland’s aid and organizes relief efforts that saved hundreds of thousands of Polish children’s lives. Following WWII, when Poland was more or less handed over to the Soviet Union in 1945/1946, Herbert Hoover advocated for their freedom. He may have been disliked in America, but in Poland, Herbert Hoover was a hero.

One of the characters in my story is named Howard Chase. I think when I was writing “God’s Truth” I was currently binging “Only Murders in the Building.” In the show, there is a character named Howard Morris, portrayed by the brilliant Michael Cyril Creighton. So, I kind of picture the Howard in my story looking like the Howard in the show.

The town gossip, Iva Kent, has been mentioned in many of the Lady Sheriff stories. She finally makes a cameo debut in “God’s Truth.” I had Ellen Corby, of “The Waltons” in mind when I wrote her.
