I really enjoyed your Midnight piece! Can I request more of Julie’s perspective, especially as mulder and Scully’s relationship evolves into romantic, a baby, etc.? Idk how far you’d be willing to follow them, but I really enjoyed it and would definitely tune in to see this perspective all the way thru post-revival even
hi! thanks for tuning in. sorry this took a bit.
---
Little Amber Lynn’s mama will only speak to Mulder.
In the second floor bedroom, Julie watches him take her statement from a distance, hyper-aware that Scully is lurking somewhere beneath their feet.
To say that he inspires trust would not be completely accurate. He wraps a silk hand around your neck, looks at you with his black hole eyes, and compels information from the back of your throat.
They inspire admiration, even from those that try to cover it up with silly nicknames.
They inspire a dread like anaphylaxis settling in.
Even Skinner seems to feel it today, having apparently done something to piss off Scully. As everyone mills around outside the house, preparing to head out, she snaps with staticky irritability.
Now, Julie is no gossip but she finds herself eavesdropping on them, pretending to review her notes as she waits for her carpool. She has always held a curiosity for Skinner.
“Did you get the keys?” Scully asks.
“Yes.” Skinner offers her two sets, each dangling with the evergreen motel tag that’s looped onto Julie's own room keys.
In Julie’s peripheral vision, Scully stares down their boss and swipes one set of keys from his hand. She turns and crisply walks to her car in a swarm of black ice shards, dripping liquid mercury.
That is one mystery solved; a drop in the ocean.
Quietly, Skinner slips the leftover set into his pocket.
Mulder turns up in the Oregonian woods, smack dab in the middle of a crater that didn’t used to be there. At least that’s what Skinner tells Julie when he calls.
It all sounds like something that is not her problem but she’s smarter than to word it like that. “I’m sorry, Sir,” she tries instead, “but has a crime been committed?”
“It’s violent, Agent,” he snaps. “Get your ass on a plane.”
Julie does.
With white gloved fingers, she collects the burnt tatters of Mulder’s old clothes into evidence bags. When she goes to see him in the hospital, he is bright and freezer cold. There is not a scratch on his incandescent skin.
She is here, too. Suited up, thousand-watt Scully. She runs her crystalline talons through Mulder’s hair under the guise of checking for injuries and Julie has to turn away for air.
“What’s the last thing you remember?” Julie asks him, Scully looming in the doorway and picking at Julie’s training to scan for an alternative exit.
“You mean before I woke up in the woods in my birthday suit?” Mulder asks.
“Yes,” Julie says, her hindbrain blaring at her to turn around, there’s something behind you. “Before that.”
“Aside from the ship and damn near getting abducted, not much. Skinner can confirm that, he was there.”
Julie relents and glances to the doorway, but it’s just Scully. Arms crossed, masked up.
“Scully,” Mulder says, and she reluctantly steps out into the hallway, halving the clamor of Julie’s fight-or-flight.
It has been years since she interacted with one of them without the other; she’d almost forgotten that they are more palatable alone.
“Sorry about that.” Mulder gives a playful smile, showing off iridescent teeth. For a flash, his fangs drip with ripe cherry blood. Julie blinks. “She’s a little on edge,” he explains.
She wants to lean in; she wants to run away.
“Agent Mulder. How did that crater get there?”
Mulder lies to her. “I don’t know.”
It’s been an exhausting fall and Julie has already attended far too many of these obligatory charity events. American flag pins abound; teary late night talk show hosts. There is a curdling thirst for vengeance in Congress and a frenetic unease in the public.
She and Kramer camp out near the snack table, gorging themselves on free candy to make up for skipping lunch.
“Am I going to Hell if I say I’m getting tired of these?” Kramer asks, setting his carefully folded KitKat wrapper down. It springs back into its old form.
“If you do, I’ll be down there with you.” She watches him reach for a Snickers.
He continues quietly, tearing off a neat slice of flag-colored foil. “I just– There’s only so many times I can listen to these speakers. I get that it’s…”
Over his shoulder, she spots Skinner and – yes, it is him; they are easier to tell apart once they start speaking – Mulder in a black dress shirt, a baby strapped to his chest.
“…but it’s fucking depressing, and–”
“Hey,” Julie whispers. “Your favorite former coworker is here.”
Mouth sticky with caramel and nougat, Kramer asks, “Huh?”
She tilts her head towards Mulder; she cannot look at him for too long, having gone soft from lack of exposure to them. He’s giving her blue and purple echoes, like she’s been staring at the sun.
“Oh yeah, I saw Scully earlier with the…,” Kramer says, gesturing to his torso where a BabyBjorn would sit.
Ah but are you sure it was Scully?
Quickly moving on, Kramer says, “I didn’t think he was so progressive.”
“What did you think then? Scully, barefoot and pregnant?”
He nods thoughtfully, conceding. “I guess you got a point there.”
Julie digs into the sweets bowl until she finds a rare leftover KitKat. “Did you see their kid?”
“Yeah,” Kramer says, popping the rest of his Snickers into his mouth. “Little boy.”
She holds back her real question. They still dance around this, like verbalizing it would make it Real.
But did you see his face?

My Argument for Homosexual but Panromantic Art and Aromantic but (Something)sexual Tashi
@seek--rest I AM SO SORRY BECAUSE THIS IS A BOOK. That's why I didn't put it in your asks, so I could put it under a cut.
Okay, so I think it should be acknowledged before I get into my thinky thoughts that art is up to interpretation and I am not really trying to convince anyone of my perspective. There's a certain amount of bias that anyone comes into any experience with and it's going to color their perception no matter what. And that bias could be anything.
It could be the experience of having been cheated on and really loathing any kind of infidelity, emotional, sexual or otherwise. It could be being queer and therefore more fluent in queer subtext (though, of course, this movie was pretty blatant -- bananas and churros and boners abound lol) or being a black woman and sympathizing with Tashi's experience (which I am and do), or having been homeless/hungry and sympathizing with Patrick or any number of other life experiences that lends us to partiality toward one character or another, or more aversion to/disidentification with one or another character's plight.
So, I just wanted to start with that universal acknowledgement first. And then also say that I love each of these characters in their own ways and so when I say something that could be perceived as negative, like Art is petty or Tashi is cold, or Patrick is trash, I mean it in the most loving of ways. lol Because I enjoy seeing complex characters come to life. I don't need them to be right all the time, or for their motivations to be simple. I prefer the more complicated motivations and relationships, tbh, which also plays a part, I think, in how I see them. My take on these characters is the least kind. I see them all as their worst selves lol
So my point is that some of this is just down to what we think. And we won't ever be on the same page, because we're different people. With all that said...this is why Art's feelings for Tashi are ambiguous to me and why I think Tashi could be read as aromantic (not just not in love with Art, but not in love with Patrick either. Not in love with anyone, just in love with tennis.)
It's been clearly stated by the director himself that the movie is queer, which is, in large part, a reference to Art and Patrick's non-platonic relationship to one another. Poly relationships could be argued to be inherently queer, even if the relationships are all hetero-romantic, but I don't think that's how it was being used. Everyone, down to the actors themselves and the people who made the soundtrack are aware of the movie being about "Unending Homoerotic Desire". That's gay. lol It's not JUST gay, but it is gay.
And to me, this desire is seen to be mutual from pretty early in the film, both by how they look at each other and interact with each other and through Tashi's recognition of their intimacy. i.e. working deliberately to get them kissing (not holding hands, not hugging, kissing, something romantic/sexual) -- Tashi, to whom tennis is a relationship. Who noted that they are Fire&Ice and was drawn to them (Both of them together, not separately!) enough to come into their space and fuck around. lol
We learn quickly that they've shared bunks since they were around 12 years old, that Patrick was essentially Art's first sexual experience, that they're incredibly tactile, attached at the hip, and that they move in unison.
My read of Tashi here is that she's young and having fun, and she has her whole life of tennis stardom ahead of her. And she's an enigma to them. I would argue that much of both their attraction to Tashi has much to do with her dominance on the court, her ferocity, her skill, and her take no bullshit attitude. I think it has as little to do with her gender and her physical makeup as it has to do with her race or whether she's left-handed. Tashi OWNS the Tennis court and that's hot.
But if we're going to talk just about physical attraction and sexual desire, I'd argue Patrick's desire is put front and center. Art's is....more questionable. Patrick is the one who shows Tashi to Art. He's the one who has been following her game, knows who she is. Has watched her play. It's established right away that Patrick finds her "hot". Art asks why he's into her "Is it her game?" (his first thought is her skill, not whether she's pretty), and Patrick clarifies, no, she's the hottest woman he's ever seen.
Small, yes. And something I can see a lot of people disregarding, but since it's already been established this is a queer film, and we have little dialogue to go off of, I think it's significant that Art's frame of reference, or the way he relates to women is immediately presented as non-sexual. For a horny 18-year old this is notable.
Then we have Art say, "Look at that Backhand" in a dreamy voice. Not, look at those legs, or look at that ass. Patrick grabs his leg in excitement, eyes only on Tashi. And then we have two boners. lol Okay, yes, Tashi is without a doubt a part of this, but the camera didn't show that touch for no reason. Patrick is not outside of the bubble of desire for Art, even here. He's adding to it. And later we get something along the lines of Art saying, "that scream". Okay, so Art's drawn in by her, yes. He seems to be mesmerized and in awe of her power and skill, how wild she is on the court.
Later at the party, again, Patrick is the one to articulate sexual feelings tied to whatever makes him mesmerized about Tashi Duncan, "I'd let her fuck me with a racket," visceral, physical, sexual, tangible.
They both watch her on the dance floor, again, there IS desire, but that desire for Art is not articulated, and STILL Patrick is present, being very vocal about his. So, for me, it's all tied together -- there is no separating Art's desire for Tashi from Patrick's desire. We only see it with Patrick present. (Throughout the whole film! Because scenes with just Tashi and Art, throughout the entire film, are without the evident heat, fire, and urgency that is very much present with Patrick and Tashi. I'll get to Art's ahem performance issues in a bit, but yeah )
Then the introduction, Okay. There's this kinda immediate back-and-forth with Patrick and Tashi. And Art's quieter, almost left out of the conversation until he inserts himself. Then she leaves them dizzy in her wake. And Art says they should go. Some might say, "oh poor doggo just didn't think he'd have a chance." Maybe! Or maybe he really was just going to leave without shooting his shot because he wasn't running this show, flirting with her wasn't driven by his desire. It was driven by Patrick's. It was enough for him to meet the future Queen of Tennis, may she forever reign. And they could go back to the room and jerk off in separate beds thinking about her, just like they had that other girl.
He said, "okay let's go". and Patrick just sat there, and Art smiled knowingly, seeing he very clearly was not getting up to walk away. It was Patrick who pushed this. And then again, in the room, Patrick who was STILL talking about her. And Art said, offhandedly, not sounding miserable or even all that hurt, just kind of knowing and teasing, "she's not coming man." Patrick is obsessed, the way you are when you're really into someone. Art is...neutral. Did he find her magnetic? Hell yes. But does he see her as a person who he wants to pursue and further connect to? Not sure.
Okay, and then we have the lovely scene where Tashi asks if they've ever.....and Art get all flustered and No No NO, and Patrick is the one to let slip. And we're also given this lil tidbit that Patrick has dated girls, is apparently somewhat of a player, and Art is...what? Said to be dating no one, possibly having dated no one? Patrick jokes "of course he cleans up with that face", but it's pretty much implied that Art hasn't dated. Again, small things. But now they're starting to add up for me.
Between Patrick being his first sexual experience, Art apparently not being all that into girls in general, and the already established intimacy that they share, I'm thinking hmmm, maybe Art is in the closet. First thought, right out the gate. But maybe not enough for some people. Cool.
Then we get the game. And one could argue Art wanted to win to date Tashi. OR one could argue Art wanted to win so that Patrick wouldn't date Tashi. Hold my beer. lol
Lbr, do you know any 20-year old lad that, had they lost a bet or a game, and promised they wouldn't try and talk to some girl because they'd lost, wouldn't try to slide into the DMs anyway? Like, be for real. Art is quieter than Patrick, but he's smart, talented, cute, he is the one who makes calls during their double's games. He isn't some delicate flower who can't have a conversation. He can hold his own when he wants to.
He does just fine telling Tashi he wants to kiss her when he's good and ready, so if he wanted her, why not go after her? Or at the very least, why not attend her games at Stanford? Why not ask her out to lunch? Why not get close to her under the guise of exchanging messages for Patrick? Folks seem to want to paint him as a saint. He's a teenaged boy. No one takes dating all that seriously at that age, especially not in college, when everyone is hooking up. I'm not saying he isn't loyal to Patrick, but the occasional conversation? Or just being friends to be in her space, since he had so many feelings? Nothing?
And then the FIRST time in a year -- a year of Tashi and Patrick dating -- Art sits down with Tashi and he doesn't talk about her game. He doesn't talk about how beautiful she looks. He doesn't talk about how much he's missed her or what he'd love to do with her (or have her do to him), he talks about.....Patrick. lol wtf.
When Tashi asks him if he's in love with her, what does he say? He doesn't say yes. He doesn't even jokingly say yes, in a flirty, teasing way. He says "who wouldn't be." Think about how carefully that sidesteps her question. Not "of course I am". "Who wouldn't be?" That is not a yes, fam. That's a general, anyone would be in love with you because you're Tashi Fucking Duncan. Thanks, she knows, that's not what she asked. She asked if You love her, and we know how perceptive Tashi is, how astute.
She knows what she's not hearing. That's why she asks again 3 years later, slyly, "you still in love with me, Art?" knowing damn well that man never said he was. (This isn't just about what's being said, this is tone, body language. We speak with more than our words, you know? Anyway...)
So, Patrick comes in to visit. And Art is visibly happy to see him. And then Patrick says it's for Tashi, "Why do you think I'm here?" and look at Art's face. The man is NOT happy. Why? Because Patrick wants to see his girlfriend of a year? Who he talks to weekly? (Who Art already knows he talks to, because they've been dating?) Maybe. Or maybe because Art and Patrick have literally lived in one another's back pockets for 7 years and they've been separated, and the one time in however long Patrick comes back to visit and it's for Tashi. Might that bother him? No?
Okay. Then the fight, then the accident. And now suddenly Art doesn't talk to Patrick for YEARS. YEARS??? Someone explain this to me. Your here-to-fore best friend's girlfriend gets hurt, (and yes that's what I'm arguing Tashi was to him at this point, because aside from one awkward lunch that's all we have of their interaction) and you see it. And she's understandably mad, because she has to blame someone. And you're....Also mad??? Why, again?
Because she's the love of your life? Hmmm, reaching imo, Art barely knew her. They hadn't spent any TIME together. And this is where the realist in me comes out. Very romantic to imagine one night on the beach (with Patrick present) and a snog in a dank hotel room (again with Patrick present) made him fall in love with this woman, but I'm not buying it.
No, his longest lasting and most intimate relationship to that point is Patrick. And that's why the silent treatment is so peculiar. Even Patrick doesn't understand why Art stopped talking to him, and it's not because he's an oblivious dick. Patrick knows Art. He knows Art's patterns, his habits. And he knows Art's years-long freeze out just did not make sense, especially since Tashi had likely stopped blaming him years ago. I mean, Tashi clearly didn't blame Patrick for her injury when she and Art met up 3 years after college. So, if Tashi's not mad anymore (at him, specifically. she's mad in general at the world -- she's bitter and angry and in lots of pain. but she's not holding a grudge at him.), if she wants to move on, why are YOU still mad Art?
Make it make sense.
I argue Art was mad at Patrick for all of it. For leaving him at Stanford, for choosing Tashi, for taking their friendship for granted, for not prioritizing him. And then, somehow, for Tashi's injury too, because Patrick had the nerve to choose her and then be so insecure he couldn't go one day without fucking it up. And then Tashi got hurt and that somehow made it Art's fault (in his mind) and he resented that too. I think Art's resentment and anger was real and intense and I think even he didn't completely understand that this level of betrayal wasn't appropriate for a friend. But that's my take. lol
Anyway, then we get into Tashi and Art. And we see that it's been 3 years since college when they meet up again. So, Tashi had time to fully understand that the career she thought she'd have is never going to happen. And Art says she should be his coach. And she's a better coach than anyone could be, and Art, Art is good at flattery, and he's good at saying the right things and showing her that he'll basically be the anti-Patrick. He will listen to her, he will do as she says, he won't try to take anything she doesn't want to give, and he'll let her lead, he'll let her take him to his wins.
And Tashi, god Tashi needs that. Not a dick inside her. Not a tongue in her mouth. A body. A healthy, working body to mold and shape and make a winner. That's what she needs.
And so let's come back to the opening scenes. I saw someone say it was so crazy to see Art go from getting dragged out of bed to a physical therapist who stretches him out, to a nutritionist who feeds him and gives him his meals, to Tashi who instructs him and trains him. The man doesn't own his own body. He barely has autonomy. He's given it all over.
And if they love each other so much, they should happy with their arrangement right? But look at them. They sit on couches and benches five feet apart. They don't talk about anything but tennis. There's two scenes in the script (only one in the movie) where Art can't get it up for sex and Tashi is trying to coach him into an erection. Literally coach him through sex.
Not like...he has E.D. or he's depressed; then she wouldn't be trying to Jedi-mind trick him into getting hard. In the scene as written, she says something like "come on, you can get there. We always do" Always. As in every time they are trying for sexual intimacy -- which Tashi clearly wants, or she wouldn't be trying to get him there -- this is what they're doing. Working to get him hard enough. Yikes.
At their age, this is pretty confusing. So, this goes into my pile labeled, "things that make me think Art is not sexually attracted to women".
And then we have Art saying "I love you" and Tashi saying "I know." Art saying "I just need to know you'll still love me" and Tashi refusing to give that to him. Art having to beg for affection "just hold me?" and Tashi literally looking dead in the eyes as she acquiesces. This is not a couple that is happily married, if they ever were.
I think they've always had these issues, this mismatch in their needs. But Tashi needs to win so bad and Art needs so badly to give that to her, and to be something other than what he fears he is (nothing, no one). That, I think, is his biggest fear. That Patrick leaves him -- as he did -- and he's got no identity, no function. (This is where that part about co-dependcy the director talks about comes in. The codependency is not just between Tashi and Art). He needs to be able to be something without him. So he sets out to prove that and in the process what he becomes is hollow -- a machine. A body to be used for Tashi's win (HOT! okay, moving on lol).
I do feel there is love between them. You don't maintain a relationship, even a very broken one, for 13 years without loving the person in some way, somehow. I believe that Art has a lot of respect, admiration and affection for Tashi. I believe he loves her, truly. He might even be in love with her, but, from what I'm seeing in the "text" as you say (lol fancy term), I don't think he wants her. I don't think he's sexually attracted to her. Does he need that in a relationship? Maybe not, but he certainly needs a level of physical affection that Tashi does not seem very wiling to give him. Not if he has to beg for it.
Meanwhile, Patrick says Tashi hates Art, a little. And I think he's right. I don't think she wants to hate him, but Art is healthy. More than that he's recovered from an injury and she didn't! And even though he's well enough and good enough to win it all, he'll never want it like she wants it. He'll never eat, sleep, breathe, fuck, die for tennis. He wants to be good, he wants to play well, and he does. But that hunger? That drive that Tashi had (that Patrick also has) to be the best, to dominate on the court, that crazy, insane love with the game of tennis? That's not Art. Art is tired. And he wants to retire. And that makes Tashi hate him a bit.
Now, I don't think he's just a "dick and a racket" to her, but I do think it's interesting that she said it that way. We can't take dialogue just at face value. Dialogue is always doing more than one thing, especially in film, where screenplays are just dialogue and sparse action. She says it, not Patrick. And she's defensive about it.
This is another little clue on the pile of "signs Tashi loves Art but is probably incapable of being IN love with him". lol He isn't just a dick and a racket. He's the father of her kid (maybe! o__o), and the man who gives her what she needs to survive (the wins). But that's...pretty close to being a dick and a racket. lol And well, being a racket is a pretty big deal for Tashi.
Now their engagement didn't seem to be a particularly joyous affair. Tashi was drinking a scotch pretty moodily with that ring on her finger. You say you can't see her marrying without loving him romantically. And that's, again, a very sweet sentiment. But people get married for all kinds of reasons.
Art was already hers in the most important of ways. He'd given her his body. If he wanted her to marry him, why wouldn't she give him that? Who else was she going to marry? She'd gotten into bed with him (figuratively) for his entire career. Her life is getting him to win the grand slam. Her ultimate romance is winning that.
Tennis is her love affair. Why wouldn't she marry the only person who could possibly get her as close to her dream as she would ever get? They get the tax breaks, he binds himself to her even tighter. What's the downside?
And as far as the kid, I have theories (look at her hair!), but suffice it to say even If that's Art's kid, people choose to have/keep kids for all kinds of reasons, no? And it's not always "I love this person, I want to make a baby". Again, very sweet, but sometimes people decide to keep kids cause they hope that shared purpose brings them closer together. And I can see Art wanting the child and Tashi agreeing very practically, because why not? It's what families do, right? They could afford it -- they had present parents, and their kid would be the best tennis player this world has ever seen.
For all her passion and fire with Patrick, for all the sex and good feeling there, she doesn't seem to be particularly enamored of him. He's arguably, the person whose gotten the most from her, the biggest rise out of her, seen her underbelly, and he's the only other person in life she's gotten into bed with repeatedly (presumably). But she's not overly concerned with keeping him for herself. Or getting anything else from him. Monogamy. A confession of love. Affection. She even says it herself,
"Did I say I wanted anyone to be in love with me?"
Maybe she doesn't because she can't give that back.
Sex is shown to be something she wants and participates in with gusto. Romance? Mmmm. Not so much.
The most romantic thing she's ever said has been about tennis. Falling in love across the net. THAT is her romance. It's why she was drawn to Art and Patrick in the first place, Fire&Ice. She saw their intimacy and wanted to see it play out in another way. But ultimately she didn't even stay to watch them fuck -- she just wanted to see some good fucking tennis. And the most alive she looks in her adult life is after their match.
To me, you can see she's unhappy -- that she only feels satisfied when Art plays good fucking tennis, but Art only plays that way with Patrick, and Art was determined to freeze him out, so they were both miserable. Art without romantic love and affection, Tashi in a sexless, unsatisfying marriage. It takes Patrick coming back in to give them both what they need. They don't work without him, love him or hate him.
So yeah....that's my take on Art and Tashi. I think there is so much there, comfort and partnership and mutual need, but.....the romance people are seeing I'm just....I'm not seeing it.
And I didn’t really get to Patrick/Tashi, but THIS is part of it too.🤣

Easier Done Than Said series by COMPACFLT (@compacflt). I adore this one. Full on adore it. That being said, it’s emotionally rough, i.e. men not talking about their feelings and also the period-typical internalized homophobia and sexism. Look, honestly they are such idiots and terrible to themselves and each other, but it's so grounded and realistic and good. Occasionally being irritated at their emotional stunted-ness aside, this is one of the best ‘Icemav through the years’ fics out there. Go read it. You won’t regret it. (The second work is somewhat less emotionally stunted.) 131k in two (multi-chaptered) parts, M. Ongoing.
No Less Than Two Miracles by thecarlysutra (@icemankazansky). “You are Iceman Kazansky. You have been dead for less than three days.” Ice has a hand in Mav and Bradley surviving. Second person POV. seventy minutes by AortaArgent (@aortaargent). Post TG:M. Mav is self-destructive and more than a little broken in every sense of the term; I think it’s fair to call him traumatized. His approach to sex is very transactional, which throws a wrench in the process of him and Rooster getting together. (they do get together tho.) Angst, hurt/comfort, and fluff at the end. I circle back to this one fairly regularly. Title from a Siken poem. Five chapters, 19.3k, E. Complete.

two thousand miles apart, you’re my home series by GraceEliz. Yes. just. yes. post movie, musing on fate and conversations, second work is a 5+1. 5.5k in two parts, T. WIP.
scared my love, you’ll go (just for tonight i’m wasted on you) by CaughtInATalespin. Dubcon warning. Mav is a wreck during and after Ice’s funeral, Rooster promises to get him home. Ft. major miscommunications and dubcon, Roosmav, poor Mav honestly. 7.9k oneshot, E. Complete.

No one: …
Me: So I know Lestat's the main character of Prince Lestat, but did any of the other beloved characters see the warning signs of the Voice/Amel in the world before it started going around compelling the old ones into killing younglings.
Tumblr media
Sorry, killing young ones. And what might those warning signs have looked like?
Prince Lestat is meant to be read as a sequel to Queen of the Damned and, structurally, its many view points succeeds in that goal. However, thematically, there was so much a missed opportunity in actually seeing many of our favourite characters still existing in the aftermath of maybe as little as a decade still scrambling with the grief and loss and so many abruptly silenced minds...
None of them were... doing well... post-Akasha. But then the tension begins to build again.
Slowly, at first. Disconnected fragments across the continents of the world.
Because it's not like these immortals have ever been the best at communicating directly:—
The Coven and the Courtiers - A Guide (QotD 1.5)
Khayman is with Maharet, never straying too far from the jungles of the Amazon, when he picks up the first murmurings of malcontent from the spirit they moved from Akasha into Mekare. It is not happy within its new host. But perhaps it wasn't happy in its previous host either. Akasha sat as a statue under Marius for centuries before ever waking up. Khayman wonders if they're going to have that long again.
Marius is in Brazil with Daniel. He cannot help himself from scanning nearby minds, even as he claims a hope to remain on the sidelines of their world after the disastrous end of his two millennia caring for the Mother and Father. Marius is therefore one of the first who hears word of a very early and isolated Burning that doesn't seem to have any connection back to Akasha. But it would be foolish to ignore them completely, especially when the last Burnings are still so recent.
Pandora's returned to Arjun in India, but he has begun to act strangely. Because of the veil between their minds, she can only ever understand it through the words he offers for explanation. He wishes for the sanctuary of the earth. Inwardly, Pandora wonders if it was her urge to rush to Marius' aid when he was encased in the ice. She doesn't think it was her alliance with Santino, who is now of course dead to them all. She watches Arjun—before he goes into the ground—because he is the love of her life. She watches him because something deep within tells her something's not right.
Mael was filled with a profound sense of purpose during the first Burning. He would look after Maharet and Jesse. Yet, he had failed in that. Since the Burning, Khayman has taken over as Maharet's consort and companion and that's left Mael with... nothing. His maker Avicus has a new coven in Geneva now, with immortals as old as Gregory and as young as Davis. If Avicus thinks of Mael at all, he has no cause to think it. He's had a very long life but, without any sense of purpose calling him, there is no long any care in him. Not for himself, not for any his kind.
Bianca's in Paris with her new fledgling. They never imagine anything could hurt them. Why would they? The first Burning passed them over without so much as coming near them. There's a rumour passed around Europe lately that bringing one into the blood no longer seems to be happening the way it used to. Tales of mute zombies with hearts that won't beat—truly dead things in the place of fledglings—abound. But even that's easy to ignore when Bianca and her own fledgling feel so young, and in love, and immortal.
David is one of three who were mortal during the last interaction with a Queen of Vampires. He and Jesse talk about it sometimes. Jesse has kept up contact with the Great Family in South America, just as David kept some of his contacts within the Talamasca in Britain, younger ones who didn't mind seem to mind when he became a vampire. The same ones Marius' maker Teskhamen has also given his life into the hands of. They're the ones to bring David's attention to Burnings-related incidents as they start making the news on human television stations. They're the ones to ask him if this is something they should be worried about.
Gabrielle alone is able to say that—when the Queen descended on them the last time—she was the one in risk of losing her only remaining son. She knows many think her cold, but they don't know the pain of burying a child born of their womb. Gabrielle has hardened herself because it's the only protection she's found for her heart and her time in Turkey with the ancient handmaid Sevraine has not her changed utterly. Oh, Gabrielle's not blind, she knows her son will not let this world come to an end. Nor is she—first fledgling of Lestat—unaware of the Voice that whispers to him now.
Killer is in Philadelphia and is only just a century in the blood and one of the youngest outside the "Coven of the Articulate" to have survived Akasha's massacre. Killer makes up part of the Fang Gang, the coven that lies closest to Armand in New York City, less than two hours away. He may only be notable for his proximity to Armand, and his prior connection to Davis, but even he senses the change in Armand as word begins to trickle back to Trinity Gate and the Fang Gang are forced to disband.
Armand knows already he will protect his chosen family at all costs, from any future threats or Burnings. Was there a moment he considered taking them all underground where none would find them should anything resurface? Yes, though he'll never admit it. There was always that concern that the Sacred Core residing in Mekare would corrupt her. Is that what they are starting to see now?
Louis can hear nothing for himself, of course. But Lestat's visits to Trinity Gate begin to grow more and more sporadic and Louis can see Armand grows steadily more tightly wound as the world around them changes again. But still Louis counsels his love and companion to pause. Wait. Be vigilant, but if Khayman and Marius have told them they are already watchful of possible threat, they are likely not the only old ones to do so.
Benji's too much like Armand; he will protect the ones he considers his tribe. He never really understood how the old ones isolate themselves, hasn't really had enough interaction with them to recognise it in any real way. For him, immortals live like they do in Trinity Gate. Benji's radio show begins slowly, like a modern analog of Armand's Théâtre des Vampires, in that no human hearing it will believe, but blood drinkers will find what they need.
I was going to suggest Lestat's probably one of the youngest immortal to actually hear Amel's voice. Then I remembered how strong in the blood Daniel's always been depicted for his age. So yeah he's mad, but that's not helped by the fact Amel started yammering at him from the same point as Lestat. "He rages," said Daniel. "When he's gotten into my head, he's raged."
Cause it's a psychic blast, people. Even Lestat acknowledges, "the Voice is working on a number of fronts".
In any case, all of this is more or less the outline of what I've been thinking of as the QotD 1.5 head canon, something that's being played out in How They Get to Trinity Gate as we get to the pointy end of the fic.

An Introduction from the Bog
Hello! I'm here to post occasional art, reblog lots of things I like, avoid drama like the plague, and jabber about my writing so I don't talk the ears off of the people around me in real life.
I am on AO3 as Maternal_Macrophage. I post my fics there, and they are mostly Kirby and Pokemon fics -- particularly, in the latter case, of the Submas variety. My other obsession is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.
I have entirely too many AUs and fics in progress. It may not be many compared to some, but it seems like a lot to me.
Some tags you might want to know are:
egginfroggintalkin -- my jabber posts, where I talk and don't have any art
eggin's writings -- posts involving my fics or original writing
eggin creatin' -- my art and stuff related to it
eggininquisition -- my polls, few though they may be
reset reverse -- for posts about my ongoing Pokemon fic of the same name, Reset, Reverse; it is currently on hiatus and may undergo a hefty amount of reworking in the future
wtst -- abbreviation of my first posted Pokemon fic, and first finished multi-chapter fic, Welcome to Sinnoh's Temple - WtST masterpost
iced tracks -- my Frozen Submas AU, in which Legendaries bestow gifts upon a select few people in their region, and Ingo and Emmet receive powers from the Dragons of Unova
beautiful decline au -- my new, still-in-development, splatters-of-inspiration-on-a-wall, messy Pokemon AU, wherein Hisui is post-apocalyptic Sinnoh and humanity is coming down from an era of inorganic existence and life as nature reclaims the world
I told you so au -- an AU in which the Nimbasa Trio and Iris get eeby-deebied to Hisui; the titular fic is mainly Sabi-centric
mistborn au -- The Horrors, now with 100 percent more vigilantes and impaling (also more Pokemon)
little stray feathers -- the name of my ongoing Kirby fic, Little Stray Feathers, in which a young Meta Knight releases Galacta Knight with a wish for death or safety, and adoption slowly commences
And more, which I will add as they get posted or I start talking about them. These tags will all get posts marked with them when I get around to making said posts.
Spoilers will abound for my fics, as my mouth is large and my impulse control is smol.
Egginfroggin is a very recent moniker for me. Any art I post that was made prior to this account will be signed "Saffy." Just putting that there to prevent confusion.
Please be polite in your interactions here. I am not here for drama. I am here for sillies and talky-talk about fics to unwind, not to get riled up bickering with strangers on the internet. Thank you.
Also, I am awkward! I am a bog-dweller. And I am busy. It may take me a while to respond to any messages or asks, and I apologize for that.
If I somehow managed to rot your brain and you have fanart or something for me, go ahead and post it -- please tag me if you do -- or send it in an ask. I will probably die of joy overload, but it would be a worthy death.
Thank you! May you all have a good, blessed day.

hammerhead thinks and watches. an experiment in writing his pove
Hammerhead is not sure why Montana likes Beck. He would understand tolerating the illusionist for a job or two. But despite Montana’s maintenance of a calm professional attitude, the cowboy became best friends with the overly dramatic illusionist who treated life like a play. Hammerhead is certain he would never be able to be friends with Beck, much less have the man live inside of his home. Then again, Hammerhead does not want anyone to share his home.
He is currently seated in Montana’s bar where Beck had somehow convinced Montana to host a karaoke night. Even more surprising than that fact is that there were many takers for the event once Fancy Dan broke the ice by going first with Beck. Even the roughest-looking guys in the joint seemed to be enjoying it. Toe-tapping and small head movements to the beat abound. Beck seems as proud as a peacock to have the night going well and has been fluttering between making sure the sound system keeps working and making sure the mic gets to the people who had queued to go next, and sticking close to Montana. The man seems to be holding himself back from fully taking over the show, and works as a half-decent mc.
Hammerhead is here mostly to drink. The show had been a surprise. He stays to observe, half interested to see if he can figure out what exactly the cowboy sees in Beck. Montana is a solid member of the Big Man’s organization. Trustworthy, in that Montana’s mouth had stayed shut even as the Big Man’s face became known to him. Responsible; the man would get a job and see it through to the end even if it was bitter. Loyal; Montana stuck with his Enforcers and never left a man to flounder on their own. And it seems Beck has gained that firm loyalty if his continued and repeated presence at the cowboy’s side.
Beck tugs on Montana’s arm and makes a small begging face. Montana shakes his head and Beck speaks again. Hammerhead cannot hear it, but he suspects that its a request for the cowboy to sing. He wonders if Montana will go for it. Dan shoves Montana’s other side and the cowboy shakes his head again. Ox raises an eyebrow and says a few words and Beck seems to build on it. Montana folds, marked by a head did and a faint flush of embarrassment and Beck’s bright grin. Both Dan and Ox seem pleased and Hammerhead suspects that that is part of why Montana keeps letting Beck hang around. All of the Enforcers like him. An interesting fact that Hammerhead definitely has stored away and discussed with the Big Man before. Beck hops up after the performance ends and takes over the mic.
“Thank you for that lovely performance! Round of applause!!” The crowd responds with a smattering of clapping and whoops. “Now! The wonderful owner of this establishment and the gracious host of tonight's karaoke has very kindly agreed to sing a duet with me. Welcome to the stage, Montana!”
There is a round of hoots in hollers as Montana is pushed up to the mic by the other Enforcers. The cowboy is fully red in the face and has his hat tugged down over his eyes. Beck takes a moment to pull the man to the machine to flip to the song. There is a small moment between the two where Beck lifts up Montana’s hat and says something in a whisper. Montana shakes his head and gives a small grin and takes the second mic. Perhaps that had been an offered out. Perhaps it had been an inside joke. Hammerhead finds himself speculating a little too deeply on the moment, since he notes that after it Montana has calmed and seems to have lost most of his embarrassment.
The two sing and it is not the worst performance of the night. Hammerhead finds himself watching the small interactions between the two rather than truly listening. Montana is reserved in his singing, eyes constantly flicking away from the screen to watch Beck with a small crooked grin, eyes soft. Beck goes all out during his lines, prancing around quite a bit. But when it is Montana’s turn or both sing at the same time, Beck sticks close to Montana and keeps the performance much calmer and very supportive in his body language. They wrap up the song and Montana bumps shoulders with Beck after passing the mic back. Beck glows and then gets the next person up to the mic.
Perhaps that is why Montana likes Beck. The man brings fun and a touch of light with him. Good for the Enforcers, Hammerhead supposes as he goes to pay off his tab and leave into the night.

REVIEW: STARS ON ICE AT ROGERS ARENA - MAY 18, 2023
Tumblr media
Of the four cast numbers, my favourite was the sentimental “To Build a Home” that preceded intermission. It really solidified Browning’s role as a guide and respected leader in the sport as he individually embraced each skater/pair at song’s end. The pairs and ice dancers had a brief spotlight, and the number felt warm and nuanced.
It was Madeline Schizas’ first full tour, and I enjoyed her skates to “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “Everybody Wants to be a Cat.” I really think Stars On Ice has been beneficial for Schizas to work on her expression in a low stress environment. It was nice to see her embrace her playful side (cat ears and all!). She also has some very impressive spins! Patrick Chan was a crowd favourite, having called Vancouver home for the past six years. In his tour return for the first time in four years, he didn’t show much rust to “Wicked Game” and “I Hear a Symphony.” He’s such a staple in Canadian figure skating, and the ‘Pchiddy’ appreciation was evident in the room.
Tumblr media
Keegan Messing performed a redux of this season’s short program to “Grace Kelly” and a skate to Tophouse’s “The Mountain Song.” His quick footwork and spins were in full force, as was his unwavering warm spirit. I will miss Messing on the national team, and hope he continues to do ice shows while spending time with his beautiful family, who figure skating fans have grown to know from afar.
World Bronze medalists Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier were sensational in their “Evita” and “Annie’s Song/Thank God I’m a Country Boy” routines. I’d watched them many times on television from this season, but nothing compares to the live event. They were fighters this season, notably Gilles after a surgery to remove a cancerous tumour in the winter. Their poise and ability to transform into character is something I always admire, which extends into their “Evita” bows towards the audience.
Tumblr media
Alexa Knierim & Brandon Frazier are coming off their best season yet. Their throw jumps and height on the triple twist are outstanding! They performed their exhibition routine to “Shallow” and short program “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).” Their steady and sure demeanor was on display, and I was happy to see them skate in-person. One of my favourite skates of the night was Alissa Czisny’s “Chasing Cars.” It was proof that you don’t need jumps to make a program special. She used the song (version by Tommee Profitt and Fleurie) to emote through movement, graceful skating and spins that spanned the ice. The cover song had a really cinematic build that Czisny used to her advantage.
Jason Brown is having the most fun on tour, uncontested. His Backstreet Boys routine was a joy. In an all-white ensemble, Brown even demonstrated ‘the worm’ on the ice, among some impressive jump splits. Even his bows had energy, with waving and jumping abound. In his Act II skate to “The Impossible Dream,” I was reminded of his gorgeous triple jumps, some of, if not the best, on tour. As a side note, I had a brief interaction with Brown as the skaters arrived at the rink, and he could not have been friendlier!
Satoko Miyahara was a returning cast member from last year. Her elegance and interpretation of the music was stunning to watch. “Jenny of Oldstones” and “Ne me quitte pas” were her programs of choice, and I can confidently say her elegance is missed on the circuit. There’s a confidence and calmness in how she glides on ice, and I hope she’ll continue to be a mainstay in the cast.
Tumblr media
A breakout season for Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx, we were graced with her presence in her debut Canadian tour. As girls behind me whistled and hollered “get it, girl!” Hendrickx skated to Britney Spears’ “Circus” and Loni’s “Loneliness.” She had attitude and was fierce, and it’s easy to see why she will continue to be a top contender next season. Her arms overhead jumps are flawless! Madison Chock & Evan Bates are technically immaculate, if we didn’t know already from their consistently high scores in competition. Their performance is also top notch, and they’re very innovative skaters in their lines and elements. Their skate to “Nightcall” was a highlight (the chemistry!), and I was excited to see #ChockBates in action for the first time!
Elvis Stojko’s bringing old school rock back. Skating to Shinedown and Van Halen, Stojko looked casual and collected with hands in his pockets, denim and black fingerless gloves. His mature and slightly edgy presence is always popular, drawing favourable cheers from the crowd. Even though he ended his competitive career over twenty years ago, he still has a power in his skating that is magnetic to watch. He joined Browning for an interactive skate as friendly rivals to “Raise a Little Hell,” where they sported matching shirts in admiration of each other. They joked about who was supposed to give the music to production (“on cassette”), did a quick bout of the chicken dance, and still had a raw synchronicity. Truly a memorable duo with heartfelt words of their memories together on tour.
Tumblr media
Kurt Browning received too many (well deserved) standing ovations to count! His animated personality shone and I loved the extra long looks he’d direct at the crowd in his skates. It felt personal. Skating to “Please Forgive Me” and “Who Are You,” his smooth skating ability is unparalleled. Yes, there are still jumps, and a backflip too! His aura is just so pleasant and it felt like a night celebrating Browning, with multiple montages or clips of his past performances played throughout the night.
I loved the costumes! Between the gold-detailed military inspired fits for The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done,” to the rainbow pop of colour in the closing routine to “Brand New.” And, who could forget the sleek James Bond outfits - black suits and metallic dresses that screamed ‘diamonds are forever.’ They complimented the music well, and many of the skaters brought their pre-loved, familiar outfits from their signature skates this season.
You can tell the cast enjoyed each other’s company, sharing camaraderie and grace towards the encouraging audience. Browning is leaving behind an unmatched legacy, but Stars On Ice remains in good hands.

The Glorious Necrocommunist Union of Kaer
On the eastern coast of Imeria, on the inland bulk of the Kromsian Peninsula, is the military bureaucracy of Kaer.
For centuries, they have been at war with their neighbours to the north. While that war has now cooled due to international intervention, they remain committed and ready to annihilate the entire Kromsian people and their living god.
To follow the vagaries of their history and beliefs, it is first necessary to understand something of their modern context.
The Central Party Administrative Council
Kaer is ruled by this council, comprised of the duly elected heads of each Bureau, elected Senior Comrades, and Post-Senior Comrades - the preserved ghosts of dead Council members, forever bound to serve the People's State.
Everyone in Kaer has both the right and obligation to vote on positions of power, excepting the ranks of the military who are naturally appointed by veterancy and merit. But the dead will always outnumber the living. The legion of ghosts who manage the sprawling bureaucracy can be influenced by the Necromancers who keep the state working, and who coincidentally are always voted to the Central Party.
This must be subtle, of course. Despite the best efforts of the Committee for Morale, the living soldiers may yet rebel, and every Senior Comrade is constantly watching for chances to denounce other comrades before they are caught for their own corruption. Paranoia, hypocrisy, and clandestine decadence define the upper ranks of the Central Party.
The Commissariat
Necromancers form the bulk of the Central Party, being the most common Pattern born in Kaer, but the other prominent type of Magi are Conflagrants. Passionate manipulators of fire, the Commissariat are technically outside the Bureaus and election system, charged with ensuring ideological adherence. They bolster the courage of living soldiers, and incinerate Necromancers found to be engaged in counter-revolutionary sedition.
The Bureau of State
In time of peace, this is perhaps the most powerful bureau. They are responsible for international relations, day-to-day administration beneath the Council, internal communications, and intelligence gathering. They are also the most corrupt and fractious bureau; they interact most with the outside world, they hold the purse strings, they are most vulnerable to the lure of power. The Sub-Committee for Forensic Accounting is actually their internal intelligence outfit, a nest of spies and murderers seeking to protect key assets from discovery by the Commissars or other bureaus while also maintaining the state. The Sub-Commitee for Foreign Studies is the external intelligence wing, who spy on allies and neighbours, and control the spread of imported 'degenerate luxuries' like alcohol, narcotics, music, art... things reserved for the upper echelons of society, in secret. There is a constant shadow war of departments trying to scapegoat, unmask, or ally with each other both internally and their rivals in Information.
Despite their corruption, they are still vital to ensuring the function of all organs of state, and protecting Kaer from external pressure.
The Bureau of Information
The closest rival to the Bureau of State, this office is responsible for education and research. There are subcommittees for every field of science, and the Sub-Committee for Dialectics acts as an internal espionage wing, observing the other bureaus. The Sub-Committee for Field Research acts as both a genuine external research office and does some espionage outside the state on the side.
In addition to the predictable corruption of the upper ranks, many comrades in this bureau also compete for research resources. Secret labs and prisons abound where dangerous experiments are conducted. Sinister materials are imported secretely. A classified and remote research facility on a frozen northern island observes a throbbing tumour the size of a house, freed from ancient ice.
In addition to their influence as the education institution, they are able to influence most other committees as research teams may be attached with absolute authority over secondments and military units. 'Classified state secrets' has become a darkly humorous euphemism for 'ask another question and someone will get shot'.
Departments within the bureau are as vicious as the BoS, looking to steal research or resources from each other, to inform on each other for terrible experiments and breaches of protocol.
The Bureau of Warfare
Once the most prominent bureau, the BoW has fallen in prominence as the war has ground to a ceasefire. Every Kaeri is expected to serve a tour of duty in the naval, infantry, armour, or aerial divisions. Mostly this involves drilling, sitting on your arse, and assisting the BoP with logistics. Sometimes they have a chance to conduct battles in other lands, repel rare assaults on the west border, or venture into the Exclusion Zone between Kaer and Kroms. The no-man's land where blood-starved bioweapons from the last battles lie in fitful slumber or breed in the swamps. Kroms claims they cannot control these creatures now, nor find them - not least since hunting them would require them to violate the treaties keeping them out of the EZ.
Some soldiers stay for a career, some are sent other bureaus after a five-year tour. Various clandestine offices recruit from decorated units. Some, serving in foreign lands, fake their deaths or desert, become mercenaries or try to settle down in new places.
The Bureau of Production
This Bureau is considered a cushy appointment. Far, far from any battlefield even when the war was raging, this Bureau handles agriculture, mining, and manufacture. Machines of bone and metal run the farms, overseen by Necromancers. Bone machines automate factories; ghosts inhabit bonework automata to perform more precise crafts alongside living workers.
Almost every official here, especially the necromancers, is corrupt from boredom as much as anything else. They feed the state, and so they can forge alliances with other bureau to sneak contraband to their offices. They can likewise sneak contraband around as part of provisioning.
Contrarily, perhaps some of the least corrupt and fulfilled necromancers can be found here, too; working happily on the design and building of ever more advanced bonework machines.
In general, this Bureau is considered a reward for veterans, a plum retirement that allows them to continue contributing to the war effort.
Alleged History
The Kaeri version of history is this; hundreds of years ago, they were under the yoke of the Kromsian vampires, but overthrew them and drove them north along with those who remained loyal to the monsters. But even the eldest Post-Senior Comrade does not recall the origins of the war, only the party line that the Kromsians struck first after being forced out, and so the Kaeri were left with no choice but to exterminate them.
Around twenty years ago, the Kaeri had actually confined the Kromsians to their last citadel, The Iron Tower. There they conducted a massacre of civilians, an insult the Vampire priesthood would not tolerate. Vampires being very individualist creatures, two of their number took two different approaches.
One, now known as Bright Martyr Issanitaius, slipped behind Kaeri lines in broad daylight, found the officers who had ordered the massacres, and turned their muscles to cancers. As many as sixty more Kaeri were slain before the Vampire went down under sheer weight of bullets and was burned. It was, by all accounts, a young and hot-headed example of their kind.
The other, name unknown, beseeched Imperus, the Dragon-Emperor, to end the genocide. To quote Giacomo Isley's Brought To Light: A History of Kaeri-Kromsian Hostilities:
"Imperus charged House Lezek with forcing a truce.
The Lezekim approach was swift and decisive. Heralds arrived in advance of the main House, attempting to negotiate before hostilities began. Gabriallus hovered over the Temple of Eternal Night at Towerpeak, because the Lezekim could not resist the opportunity to insult the Kromsians, and the Kromsians tolerated this because they had no choice.
Predictably, negotiations failed. While there are dissenting accounts, in general the records are clear; the Lezekim provoked Kaer by attempting to force a duel to which Kaeri command would not consent.
The Kaeri cordon around the Iron Tower was decimated; the Lezekim were very precise. One in every ten soldiers killed in a single blow, and any attempting to intervene maimed for their trouble.
Just reparations, the Lezekim said, and then prosecuted their war in earnest. Sixty Lezekim, united in purpose, with their full panoplies, personal troops, lovers, and a cohort from Imperus’ Talon.
Two months later, a broken nation accepted the armistice. Even today, the dead outnumber the living in the corridors of Kaeri garrisons.  Kroms remained confined to the peninsula, and with tightly limited airspace, but receive fresh converts every year."
Doctrine
While Kaer does not have the strongest navy at sea or in the sky, their ground forces are the standard by which modern militaries are judged. Their infantry employ combined arms; rifles, flamers, Necromantic drones piloted by ghosts. Undead form the forward ranks while the living soldiers rain hell on targets. These infantry are supported by heavy armour; soul-blasting artillery pieces, and the infamous Kaeri exoskeleton.
The exoskeleton is in part literal - a humanoid suit made of bone and plated with steel, containing a pilot sarcophagus for a living operator, bonded to a ghost, and subsystems controlled by the ghosts of animals linked to the pilot through their bonded soul for semi-automous function.
At war, the Kaeri establish a cordon of artillery pieces for initial bombardment. Then the exoskeleton brigades target strategic assets, accompanied by infantry units intended to screen the exoskeletons from lesser targets, sweep buildings, and in general maintain the ultimate flexibility of the Kaeri armed forces.
There are no records of exo-pilots surviving to retirement.

Sugar Rush: Ryan Hunter Bluestone on Chicago's Irresistible Candy Shops
Tumblr media
Chicago's sweet tooth finds satisfaction in the city's vibrant candy scene, where candy shops abound, offering an array of tempting treats to delight locals and visitors alike. In this blog, Ryan Hunter Bluestone will embark on a sugar-coated journey to uncover five of the top candy shops in Chicago. Ryan Bluestone will explore their histories, delectable offerings, founders, and the reasons behind their celebrated status.
1. Windy City Sweets
Windy City Sweets is a Lakeview destination known for its nostalgic charm and a vast selection of handmade chocolates, candy, and ice cream. From fudge and chocolate-covered everything to gummy bears to licorice, Windy City Sweets serves up a sweet trip down memory lane. The chocolate-covered Twinkies are a personal favorite. Their dedication to quality and great service shines through on every visit.
2. Amy's Candy Bar
Amy's Candy Bar, founded in 2011 by Chef Amy Hansen, is a boutique candy shop located in Ravenswood. Like many of the picks on Ryan Bluestone’s list, Amy’s is as well known for their ice cream as they are for their handcrafted caramels, and your dog will love the pup cone. This shop curates an exquisite collection of chocolates, candy bars, and other confections. Amy's Candy Bar is famous for its artisanal approach to candy-making, offering unique and handcrafted treats that are as beautiful as they are delicious.
3. Margie's Candies
Margie's Candies, with a rich history dating back to 1921, is an iconic, family-owned  ice cream and candy parlor in two bustling Chicago locations. Known for its classic and ever creative sundaes and chocolates, Margie's Candies serves up generous portions of sweet nostalgia. It's famous for its vintage charm and timeless appeal as a neighborhood institution.
4. Fannie May Chocolates
Fannie May Chocolates hit the Chicago candy scene in 1920 when H. Teller Archibald opened the first location on North LaSalle Street. Chicago’s beloved Fannie May has been through its ups and downs but even today they sell some of the finest chocolates anywhere in the city. Their menu features an array of chocolates, from truffles to buttercreams, but they are perhaps most famous for their Pixie, a mouthwatering combination of chocolate, caramel, and pecans. Fannie May is famous for its tradition of creating high-quality chocolates that have been cherished for generations.
5. Candyality
Candyality, founded in 2007 by Terese McDonald, is a whimsical candy shop with locations in Lakeview and Andersonville. Ryan Bluestone notes the shop offers a variety of candies sold in bulk bins, including vintage favorites and international treats. Candyality is famous for its playful and colorful atmosphere, inviting customers to explore the world of candy through a fun and interactive experience…ask them to tell you what your candy choice says about your personality!
In Conclusion
Chicago's candy shops are a testament to the city's love for all things sweet. Whether you're indulging in nostalgia at Windy City Sweets or savoring artisanal chocolates at Amy's Candy Bar, each candy shop on this list offers a unique and delightful experience. These establishments are more than just places to satisfy a sweet craving; they are a rich part of Chicago history. {{ OOC: Heck, I can't seem to reblog the post with these ask prompts, but I really wanted to answer them. So I cheated and answered them anyways.
Questions from here: https://www.tumblr.com/tomatoberry2/715588562333138944/ooc-pokemon-irl-mod-ask-meme
❤️ - best thing about being part of this community Roleplaying is Fun, okay. I love writing with other people so MUCH! But I also really like lore and worldbuilding, and seeing all the different directions people take the Pokemon world is so fascinating for me!
🕰️ - how long have you been roleplaying before you made a pokemon irl blog? Oh gosh, since I was like 14 years old and an old friend introduced me to RPing on the forums of a virtual pet site called Anatheria. So that makes it 16 years ago! I made this Pokemon blog in... February 2014. according to the archive! So I was roleplaying for like 7 years before making this blog.
🫂 - which blogs introduced you to pokemon irl? [realpokemon doesnt count] For me, it was actually that post with the compilation about "Tweet like Pokemon are real", and then my friend (owner of wyrmwiind, I think is how they spelled it) made one, and I was like! "!!! Oh! I already have a Pokemon blog where I do that!" Among other things, but that was this blog of course. (Kat the Hex Maniac, if you're still out there, you were also an instrumental part of my Blogging Like Pokemon Are Real!)
👥 - why did you join pokeblr? See above. I already had a Pokemon RP blog, and it seemed like this style of RP was getting a lot more attention than traditional prose RP. I can't let go of my beloved prose, so it's dual-purpose, really, but, you know. I pivoted a bit for more interaction.
🌓 - lots of lore or slice of life? HELLA lore for me, please! Slice of life is fun in bite-sized pieces, but it bores me after awhile. I like Pokemon for the ADVENTURE!
✨ - what inspired your character? ...cough. They're a shameless self-insert, really. The reason I created them as a Pokemon character is basically that I wanted to write a story about what I thought my adventures in the Pokemon world would be.
⭐ - if playing a canon char - how are they different from canon?
🌟 - how much is your character like you? As much as I could fit into them! But they're also more well-adjusted because they didn't have to deal with, ahh, Extremely Negative and Traumatic Forces acting on their life nearly as long as I did. I daydreamed about running away from home since I was like 7 years old, and this character is my exploration of that. What would I be like if I was allowed to live a happier life in a healthier society with a greater sense of freedom and independence?
💫 - how has your character developed in a way you didnt expect? The breeding center wasn't originally part of the plan. It was going to be Endless Adventures, but as I got older I realized I wanted a Different Kind of "adventure". I had more fun writing about character dynamics and the study and care of Pokemon than battles and canon events.
🌠 - do you plan on revealing any NPCs from your characters backstory? If the situation calls for them, sure! Most likely not, though. Kind of a "leave the past in the past" thing.
🌀 - what are future plans for this blog? Meeting new muses, getting involved in interesting plots, and hopefully making friends. (More hoping for IC friends, though OOC friends are welcome too!)
💥 - favorite event so far? Unfortunately I haven't really gotten involved in any of the events, but Team Winter's seem to be the most easy to get involved with indirectly. I wouldn't want to get directly involved unless 1.) it makes sense for my muse to be the one who does it, and 2.) I talk OOC to get a feel for how the other mun wants to play it, but unfortunately I'm shy about that and modern RP blogs don't have the Rules and Explicit Preference Pages that used to abound in RP communities! And I'm never quite sure how to start those conversations...
🔴 - rotomblr, rotumblr, or a secret third choice I like Rotomblr.
🪨 - favorite pokemon? Mismagius, though Misdreavus is a VERY close second! That was yoinked straight out of my OOC head.
⛰️ - favorite type? Ghost, also a lifelong OOC truth!
🏞️ - favorite game? Pokemon Pearl! I loved everything about contests, the berries, the poffins, the ribbons were fun to collect, the Pokeball seals were an artistic DELIGHT for me! And although this didn't really translate into my OC's story very well, I also really loved the underground! I had hundreds of size 99 spheres buried for harvest any time I wanted, and I think that affected how many treasures I found in the walls, because I ALWAYS dug up something worth at least 500P or more. I also had a base that was a maze and booby trapped left and right, top to bottom, and I was the reigning champion in my area of Capturing Flags and Not Letting Anyone Else Capture Mine. ;}P (People literally had to ask nicely to be able to get my flag, I think mine was only stolen ONCE in the entire span of time we played that game.)
🌍 - favorite region? Sinnoh, largely because of the multitude of different environments and characters like Cynthia and Fantina, of course it has Mismagius, and the history that LA implied to be Sinnoh's further cemented it!
🧠 - headcanon for the pokeworld you have? I'll use a specific one I've seen lots of people have lots of different takes on: Most Pokemon can understand human speech and communicate with roughly the same amount of specificity. (Much more like the anime than the game, though the "voices" I imagine them speaking in are far more animalistic and colored by their cries in-game. Specifically, I imagine Misdreavus and Mismagius to sound a lot more like the Japanese anime voices with the cadence/pitch of their game cries!)

DWC Day 6: Zealous/Rot (Iranji)
Word Count: 1000 Summary: Neatnick Iranji stops dirty work, only to head off to more dirty work. Warnings: Blood, Iranji
@daily-writing-challenge
Iranji had brought the Glittering Prize into Bilgewater Harbor, taking advantage of his new working relationship with the Frostbite Contingent to get her into drydock for cleaning and repairs. As she was winched out of the water, he frowned at the barnacles and other sealife that had taken up residence on her hull. There was going to be a lot of scraping in the future of the drydock workers assigned to the ship.
The rest of the crew began the process of preparing for shore leave, leaving the deck and common areas loud and rowdy, but Iranji moved for his quarters, quietly changing into the most worn pants he had. That done, he found the person in charge of the crew doing work on the Prize, and told them he would be assisting.
“You’re payin’ us ta do th’ work, pal.”
“She’s my ship,” he said, squaring his shoulders and staring down at the goblin.
A few minutes later he was hanging off her side by a rope, scraping away all the sealife that had accumulated over the past few months she’d been in the water. The work was smelly, and filthy, and damp, and a large part of him was internally screaming about this fact, but… He took care of the Prize. He had been doing so for years. The work was worth the discomfort, if it kept her from rotting.
He had just fallen into a rhythm and begun humming an old favorite song of his when the radio he’d been keeping at his belt for the past week hissed to life. He stopped working and went quiet, hanging still on the side of the ship as his new associates discussed needing to send personnel to the Deadmines.
He didn’t recognize most of the voices involved in the conversation, but when the call came in that they ideally needed one more person, he keyed up and spoke for the first time: “I’m free.”
He was on the right continent, at least. Once they confirmed they needed him, he climbed back up the rope onto the deck of the Prize. He cleaned himself up, strapped into his armor, and then tracked down the ship’s mage to get a portal as close to Westfall as possible. As she conjured up the portal, he whistled sharply, and Port and Starboard flew down from where they’d been perched on the mast, settling on each of his forearms.
They knew the drill; their talons gripped his wrapped arms firmly as he entered the portal, and the three of them passed through without issue.
****
Iranji spent most of the job watching the others interact, logging away their strengths, dynamics, and the like. He quickly decided that he liked them, though quirks abounded. It was unclear to him why Zimble, who couldn’t safely go into water, had chosen to assist in this particular venture given that it was a pirate cave full of saltwater. But, the mages clearly didn’t mind accommodating him: they decided to create an ice bridge to approach the ship they needed to scout. The ice proved difficult for the augmented goblin regardless, but Iranji didn’t mind carrying Zimble on his back when it was needed. He’d been in situations where it was necessary before. His captain often joked she kept him around for the heavy lifting.
That changed a bit closer to their goal. He wasn’t quite sure how Zimble ended up covered in blood– well, he knew the how, but didn’t understand the why–but he immediately told the goblin that he would no longer be getting carried if needed. The thought of touching blood made Iranji’s skin crawl, and he full-body shivered.
But, of course, the day had other plans for him. Once they found the people who appeared to be his new employer’s enemies, everything went sideways very quickly. Mako ended up frozen in ice when her own spell was blasted back at her. Zokkine grabbed a very nasty-looking totem and started vibrating like a tuning fork, and then Zimble grabbed it from him and completely shut down. And naturally, the ship ended up on fire, which meant they all needed to move very quickly while all of this was happening.
Not the worst crisis he’d been in aboard a ship. Iranji scouted a way out, smashed the ice gluing Mako to the deck with the butt of his gun, then moved for the other two goblins. They got the totem out of everyone’s hands and smashed to pieces as the fire crept closer. Zokkine was scrambling to pick up shattered bits of totem. Once Iranji realized Zimble was still out of it, he gritted his teeth and picked him up, blood and all.
Iranji tried to keep it from bothering him. He really did. But even though they were in very real danger, knowing that blood was transferring to his bare skin distracted him far more than it should have. He wasn’t holding on to his cargo well, and as a result he tripped, sending Zimble over the edge of the ship.
Thankfully, the mages slowed everyone’s fall. Iranji landed on his ass, pride hurt more than anything. They booked it out of the cave to the sounds of screaming and explosions. That, too, wasn’t unusual for Iranji.
He stuck around afterward to get more of a sense of why they’d gone in and what they had accomplished, mostly listening to the conversation as he checked over Port and Starboard and surreptitiously tried to get some of the blood off his chest. Eventually, though, it became too much to handle without making an ass of himself. He excused himself so that he could go get clean and changed.
A few hours later, he was freshly-scrubbed and in fresh clothes… but hanging over the side of the Glittering Prize, scraping at her hull. No matter what he’d just dealt with, she still needed work done.
He could always take his third bath of the day when it was finished.
