#International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day

April 27th is International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day (whoever decided that), so I guess I have to post some crow and raven pictures today.

I start with this crow that has some distinct white feathers around his eyes. This male crow lives in my neighborhood and has one wing that clearly has been injured some time ago and that he can't move correctly anymore, but he manages quite well. At the moment he is very busy looking for food for his partner as she is sitting on the nest all day. Last year they were unsuccessful, I hope this year they will have chicks.

“RAVEN HAT Tlingit, early to mid 1800s This raven crest hat probably belonged to a clan that owned the right to display Raven in this guise accompanied by story and song. The basketry rings may refer to the number of times that the hat was publicly displayed and validated as a crest object. Since the rings are woven as a single piece, at some point the number was set and no more were added. Unidentified wood, Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), mineral paints, abalone shell (Haliotis sp.), commercial cotton, unidentified adhesive, laundry blueing, tanned hide, iron 3178-60 & 3178-1236”

International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day

Of course I found out today that 𝘺𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘺 (April 27th, 2024) was "International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day". And going into what might be normal me move at this point, attempted a thing. Also, meet my D&D character, Raven, and his sister, Tallia. Raven is a level 7 Circle of Spores Druid and level 4 Way of Shadows Monk.

When Astereus was a child, moving between foster homes, xe used to have a group of crows and ravens following xem around, even in certain areas where it’s not common of corvids to inhabit in. Micah have always been very kind and gentle to this group of corvids, giving them toys to play with and even offering some leftovers xe found in the home’s trash that was supposed to be xyrs or stealing some food from their foster family’s kitchen to give to them. Micah would take the time to play and babble with them, feeling less alone. Phoebus and Philos would also find some toys and food to give to them, curious about their natures.

In exchange of their kindness, the crows and ravens would gift them all sorts of trinkets from seashells, keys, jewelry pieces, and so forth. This interaction have Micah grow more fond of corvids, feeling deeply connected with them. It’s when Micah was adopted into the Everlove family and moved in with them, Astereus didn’t see them much to no more. It’s almost like these crows and ravens were sent to look after xem until xe has a new official home and family to be with. Micah and the other oldest Starwakers has little recollection of them, but Phoebus will never forget about them as they’re always most grateful the corvids took care of them as they could.

April 27th is International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day! My comic Crow time is pretty much stuffed to the brim with crows, so it's a good way to celebrate these goth little dudes.
