About Iris Moise and the Ace of Clubs

In the latest episode (Ep. 14) Sugar tries to find information about Iris Moise and discovers the autopsy report of the girl. She died a year ago.

It could be a fake report, but why declare her dead if she isn’t? This reminds me of something else. In episode 5 we get told the founding legend of the Kingdom of Fourland. There we are shown the aces of every suit. The one that‘s interesting for this is the Ace of Clubs.

This card depicts a skeleton. Skeleton = Death. The suits of clubs so far included abilities that involved elements and nature. Death is a part of nature as well, right? What if this card allows necromancy?

But then, even if you are dead, can you still use a card? If we look at the official sources, Iris is the player of Eight of Spades. So yeah, I am not really sure.

Another thing:

Because of this conversation in the first episode I thought that maybe Tilt is the owner of the Ace of Clubs. My trail of thought was that Tilt revived Iris and that‘s why she is loyal to him. But this can be scrapped.

If we take a closer look at the key visual of the new season, there are spade symbols seen on Tilt‘s gloves, so he probably is the owner of a spade card.

Another question that also pops up: If the Ace of Clubs does revive people, then how long does this last? What happens if you remove the gloves again? Is there a limit to how many people you can revive at a time? And is the power maybe something entirely different?

Review : You Were Never Really Here (2018)

As the 2018 film season comes to a close, I am realizing that I have a little bit of catch-up to do.  As much as I’ve been on top of new releases this year, I have managed to let a few slip by me that deserve a viewing before I start locking in my year end lists.  One of the top films on that list, if not the top one, is You Were Never Really Here. 

Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) is a former soldier and FBI agent haunted by experiences in his past, but attempting to find redemption by rescuing trafficked girls from their captors, often using brutal force.  He takes care of his aging mother (Judith Roberts), with whom he shared a past full of abuse at the hands of her husband and his father.  Due to this lifestyle, Joe often flirts with the idea of suicide.  While meeting Angel (Frank Pando), the messenger between Joe and Joe’s handler, John McCleary (John Doman), Joe is seen by Moises (Vinicius Damasceno), Angel’s son.  Joe is given a new job rescuing Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov), the daughter of New York State Senator Albert Votto (Alex Manette), from McCleary.  Joe lets McCleary know that his address may have been compromised, but McCleary urges him to push forward with the job.  Upon completion of the job, Joe is accosted by NYPD, at which point he realizes that he and everyone he loves may be in grave danger, and that he must do whatever it takes to set things right.

I’ve heard many comparisons to Taxi Driver for this film, but I think that people are not looking past one or two obvious points of comparison (New York, human trafficking, vigilantism).  As much as I love the character of Travis Bickle, Joe is a much more complex specimen, at least in terms of direct information we are given about both his past and his state of mind.  Where Travis was a man pushed to the limits of acceptance by his view of society who was given a chance at redemption via rescuing Iris, Joe is truly a tender killing machine.  The way he cares for his mother, even when she is partially responsible for the abusive situation they both found themselves in, lets you know that he is patient, accepting, and not naturally malicious.  The way that he attempts to shield the girls he rescues from the violence he dishes out further drives those qualities home, not to mention his actions and choices in the now famous kitchen scene.  In Joe, we get a young man with an unfortunate fascination with death due to his bad situation become a savior for those who cannot save themselves as he constantly cheats the death that he is anchored by, yet still embracing.

For a film as violent as You Were Never Really There is at its core, it is far from a glorification of this violence.  The violence portrayed in the film is certainly a means to an end, and for the most part, we are either given only brief flashes of the violence or shown the immediate aftermath of it.  Our antihero is driven by both a sense of regret for past actions and the way he is haunted by his distant past, but despite the immediate validation he receives for his acts, there is not true ceiling for redemption.  He is heroic in a sense, but between the volume of damage he inflicts, and the fact that he will never truly be rewarded for his heroic actions, the toll taken on his soul far outweighs the good it does.  The brief looks into Joe’s thoughts, fears and memories are unnerving, and only further the fact that redemption is not his motivating drive for doing what he does.  In a sense, Joe is a broken man who, with a hammer, is attempting to ‘fix’ something else broken.

The camerawork is astonishing in this film, giving a wonderful sense of claustrophobia that makes the viewer feel both the pain of Joe and the sense of getting your hands dirty by proxy.  The intense, driving, erratic score that often erupts from long periods of being restrained perfectly evokes Joe’s rushes of adrenaline and the subsequent comedowns, all courtesy of Radiohead’s sonic genius Jonny Greenwood.  The film was adapted from a book, and in a weird way, it is easy to tell.  In my opinion, the pacing, characterization, and overall tone of the movie makes it oddly book-like, one of the most book-like film adaptations I can remember, and it definitely has me interested in reading the original source material.

In a career full of standout performances, Joaquin Phoenix has managed another notch on the belt, doing so much with so little (and in such a reserved manner) that you physically feel the struggle within him... I can almost guarantee a Best Actor string of nominations, if not wins, for this performance.  Ekaterina Samsonov is mysterious and intriguing, giving you the impression that she is ‘letting herself’ be saved in order to unleash a much greater vengeance on a much bigger target.  John Doman plays his role with the coolness and assurance it takes to be the man in charge, making the downfall of all around him that much more heartbreaking.  Judith Roberts is charming in her codependency that the role required, both immediately endearing her to audiences, and breaking their heart eventually.  Alex Manette, Alessandro Nivola, Frank Pando and Vinicius Damasceno also stand out.

Due to a limited run, I did not get to see this one on the big screen, and now that I have seen it, I’d be lying if I said that doesn’t bum me out a bit.  While most compare this film to Taxi Driver, I’d say a more apt comparison would be Good Time, by the Safdie brothers, and I will probably pair the two films together for a viewing at some point.  Definitely a high contender for Film of the Year, and one that will make my list that much more difficult to determine.

#PHnews: 12 more LGUs in NegOcc roll out nat’l ID registration

BACOLOD CITY – Some 12 more local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have rolled out the registration process for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) starting March 16.

This brings to 18 the total number of LGUs in the province now taking part in the gradual rollout of the Step 2 PhilSys registration for individuals who have already taken Step 1, or the pre-registration, last year.

Luis Gonzales, chief statistical specialist of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Negros Occidental, told the Philippine News Agency Monday that they have started the Step 2 process in the 12 towns and cities, in addition to the six LGUs with ongoing registration since last month.

The LGUs that started the national ID list-up last week are the municipalities of La Castellana, E.B. Magalona, Pulupandan, Pontevedra, Don Salvador Benedicto, Moises Padilla, Isabela and Binalbagan, and the cities of La Carlota, Talisay, Victorias and San Carlos.

The Step 2 registration process involves the validation of supporting documents and capturing the registrants’ biometric information, such as fingerprints, iris scans, and front-facing photographs.

Gonzales said the conduct of the national ID list up in Negros Occidental has been smooth except for about two days last week when the PSA registration office was placed on lockdown to give way to disinfection.

He said with the assistance of LGUs, they assured that there is crowd control and health protocols are followed in the registration centers.

Individuals who have pre-registered are expected to receive a text message, informing them of their schedule for Step 2 and instructing them to proceed to their respective registration centers.

Registration centers will be set up in more LGUs once the PSA central office approves the deployment of teams and the registration machines are already online, Gonzales added.

Based on the data of PSA-Western Visayas, 808,387 low-income household heads and members in Negros Occidental have been pre-registered for the PhilSys.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID will be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)

Me encanta leer el pasaje donde Moisés le pido a Dios una petición bastante peculiar:

Pero primero por dos veces Moisés rogó misericordia y por esas dos veces esa misericordia es concedida. Y Dios tocado por el corazón de Moises, escucha la oración de Moisés. “Mi presencia ira contigo y te daré descanso” (Exd 33:14)

Pero Moisés necesita algo más. Una petición más. Gloria. “Te ruego que me muestres tu gloria” (v.18)

Traspasamos una línea cuando hacemos una petición tal. Cuando nuestro deseo más profundo no son las cosas de Dios o el favor de Dios, sino Dios mismo, cruzamos un umbral. Menos enfoque en el yo; más enfoque en Dios. Menos acerca de mí; más acerca de Él.

-muéstrame the resplandor- está orando Moisés. - Flexiona tus bíceps. Permíteme ver la S sobre tu pecho. Tu preeminencia. Tu gran espectacularidad que detiene los latidos del corazón y hace temblar la tierra. Olvida el dinero y el poder. Pasa por alto la juventud. Yo puedo vivir con un cuerpo que envejece, pero no puedo vivir sin tí. Quiero más de Dios, por favor. Desearía ver más de tu gloria.

¿Por que quería Moisés ver la grandeza de Dios? Hágase a usted mismo una pregunta similar. ¿Por que nos quedamos contemplando el atardecer y consideramos el cielo de una noche de verano? ¿Por que buscamos un arco iris entre las nubes o contemplamos el Gran Cañon? ¿Por que dejamos que el oleaje del Pacífico nos fascine y el Niagara nos hipnoticé? ¿Como explicamos nuestra fascinación por tales vistas y paisajes?

¿Belleza? Sí. ¿Pero acaso no apunta la belleza a alguien bello? ¿Acaso no sugiere la inmensidad del océano un Creador inmenso? ¿Acaso el ritmo de las grullas migratorias y las ballenas no nos dan a entender una mente brillante? ¿Y no es eso lo que deseamos? Un Dios tan poderoso que puede conmisionar a los pájaros y dar órdenes a los peces?

-Muéstrame tu gloria Dios- esta es la oración de Moisés. ¿Me dejarías aturdido con tu fuerza? ¿Me dejarás paralizado con tu sabiduría? ¿Me dejarás sin aliento con un roce del tuyo? Un momento en la espuma de la catarata de la gracia, un destello de tu gloria Dios.

Y Dios la responde: “No podrás ver mi rostro; porque no me verá hombre, y vivirá... y cuando pase mi gloria...yo te cubriré con mi mano hasta que haya pasado. Después apartaré mi mano, y verás mis espaldas; mas no se verá mi rostro.”‭‭(Éxd 33:20,22-23‬)

Y Moisés pues, encogiendose de miedo bajo el paraguas de la mano de Dios, espera, con su rostro inclinado, los ojos cubiertos y el pulso acelerado, hasta que Dios de la señal. Cuando la mano se levanta, los ojos de Moisés hacen lo mismo y alcanzan a vislumbrar las espaldas de Dios, distantes y que van desapareciendo. El corazón del Creador es demasiado para que Moisés pueda soportarlo. Un destello que se desvanece tendrá que bastar. Yo estoy viendo el cabello largo y gris de Moisés azotado hacía delante por el viento y si curtida mano agarrada a una roca saliente de la pared para no caerse. Y a medida que la ráfaga se calma y se apacigua, y sus mechones de cabello vuelven a reposar sobre sus hombros, nosotros vemos el impacto. Su rostro. Resplandeciendo. Tan brillante como si estuviera iluminado por mil antorchas. Desconocida para Moisés, pero innegable para los hebreos, es su reluciente cara. Cuando el descendió de la montaña, “los hijos de Israel no pudieron fijar la vista en el rostro de Moisés a causa de la gloria de su rostro”. (2 Co 3:7)

Usted y yo necesitamos lo que Moisés necesitaba: un destello de la gloria de Dios. Una vista así puede cambiarlo a usted para siempre.

Puedo mirar a mi alrededor y encontrar temor y miedo o mirar a mi Papá y encontrar fé.

– Ce înseamnă Piatra Neamț pentru Cellia-Caterina Costea?

Piatra Neamț înseamnă, în primul rând, locul unde m-am născut, înseamnă acasă, deși nu mai locuiesc de mult timp aici. Revin cu drag, de cel puțin două ori pe an, ca să-mi revăd părinții, foștii profesori și prietenii. Cel mai mult îmi place să stau în grădina casei copilăriei mele, de pe str. Ștefan cel Mare. Am făcut parte din prima promoție a Liceului de Artă ”Victor Brauner”, am studiat vioara, viola și, în ultimul an de liceu, când doamna Elena Botez a revenit de la Timișoara, am început să studiez canto. Atunci am cunoscut-o. Mi-a dat foarte multă încredere. Este fenomenală, are o energie și un tonus extraordinare și doresc să rămână cât mai mai mult timp așa. Mi-ar fi plăcut să cânt muzică ușoară și, atunci când am văzut că o parte din colegii mei merg la canto și fac vocalize, am intrat și eu în sală și am spus: ”Doamna profesoară, aș dori să mă ascultați să vedeți dacă am voce, pentru că vreau să cânt muzică ușoară”. După ce m-a ascultat, mi-a spus că glasul meu nu este pentru muzică ușoară, pentru că are un timbru deosebit, o culoare specială și că aș putea face canto. Așa am renunțat imediat la violă și am început să studiez canto. De felul meu, sunt o persoană sârguincioasă, sunt un artist care investesc foarte mult timp în munca mea și mă preocupă ca întotdeauna să fiu cât mai bună. Evident, acest ”cât mai bun” este relativ, dar mă străduiesc.

– V-a părut rău că ați renunțat la vioară, la violă?

Uitându-mă acum în urmă, categoric nu. Dar desigur mi-a folosit foarte mult, pentru că am învățat să cânt la un instrument. Opt ani am studiat vioara cu doamna profesoară Maricica Gheorghieș, căreia îi mulțumesc.

– De câțiva ani buni, locuiți în Grecia. Cum este la Atena?

Frumos și cald. M-am adaptat foarte bine acolo. Sunt solistă a Operei Naționale din Atena, dar îmi desfășor activitatea, de fapt, în întreaga lume. Oficial, locuim din 2008 în Grecia. Soțul meu este tot din Piatra Neamț, am fost colegi de liceu. El cântă la clarinet, în Orchestra Filarmonică din Pireu. Fiica noastră, Iris, are 7 ani și jumătate, pictează frumos, cântă la pian, face balet, înot și o să vedem peste ani ce domeniu o să se îmbrățișeze.

– Trebuie să spunem că, încă de la venirea dvs. pe lume, muzica v-a însoțit pretutindeni.

Da, tata a fost profesor de violoncel aici, la Liceul de Artă ”Victor Brauner”, mama a studiat canto, bunicul din partea tatălui a fost 30 ani de ani prim-fagotist la Opera din Iași, sora tatălui meu e profesoară de vioară la Liceul de Artă ”Octav Băncilă” din Iași, fratele meu a studiat clarinetul, soțul meu cântă la clarinet… Suntem o familie de muzicieni.

– Succesul în muzică se poate prevesti?

Categoric nu. Din punctul meu de vedere, după ani de experiență, consider că există un destin al fiecăruia și așa cum îți este scris așa se va și întâmpla. Munca, studiul contribuie la succesul respectiv, însă nu poate nimeni garanta că vei ajunge la marele triumf. E o chestiune de șansă, de destin.

– Când ați simțit să veți avea succes?

Cred că fiecare din noi, și nu numai în domeniul muzical, așteaptă acest succes mai ales în momentul în care te dedici studiului cu toată ființa ta și muncești foarte mult. Își dorești acest succes pentru că e răsplata muncii însă succesul vine atunci când este predestinat de acolo de sus.

– Ați declarat: ”Aud mereu «nu mai sunt voci cum erau odată». Eu spun că mai sunt și vor fi mereu, dar nu mai are cine să le audă”.

Da, din păcate nu prea mai are cine să le audă, pentru că mulți dintre specialiști au ieșit la pensie, iar cei care le-au luat locul, din păcate, nu se mai ridică la nivelul înaintașilor. Gusturile s-au schimbat, percepția este cu totul alta, se promovează alte lucruri… Nu aș vrea să generalizăm, dar cam așa este.

– Ce apreciați cel mai mult la oameni?

Caracterul, pentru că s-a întâmplat de foarte multe ori să investesc în persoane care, până la urmă, nici bună ziua nu au mai dat. M-au dezamăgit profund. Însă nu m-am oprit niciodată să continui să fac bine, să ajut dacă mi-a stat în putință.

– Ce nu puteți accepta?

Minciuna. Prefer să aflu adevărul, oricât de dureros ar fi. Prin minciună se pierde toată încrederea.

– Sunteți caracterizată ca având o voce distinctă, frumoasă, lirică, puternică, de culoare închisă.

Este o voce mai specială, cred că o moștenesc pe mama, care a studiat canto. E un har. Sunt și cazuri când te naști cu o voce expcepțională, fără să ai în familie genă de artist liric.

– Care este opinia dvs. despre tradiție în arta lirică românească?

La noi, încă mai există tradiție și România a fost binecuvântată de-a lungul anilor cu o școală excelentă de canto. Faima mondială a liricii interpretative românești încă dăinuie.

– Cum v-ați acomodat cu celebritatea?

Nu mă consider o persoană celebră. Sunt cunoscută, dar niciodată nu m-am gândit la lucrul acesta și, dacă-i să răspund, m-am acomodat foarte bine, pentru că nu mă gândesc la asta. Mă consider un om normal și, atunci, îmi fac meseria cât pot de bine. Nu mă interesează ce spune lumea, fac ce consider eu că este just, nu-mi place să dau explicații nimănui despre ce fac și trăiesc bine cu mine. Admir foarte mulți artiști, însă întotdeauna am încercat să fiu autentică și să nu copiez pe nimeni. Înainte de a păși pe scenă, simt niște emoții îngrozitoare în stomac. Când am intrat pe scenă, se schimbă total starea de spirit.

– Dacă nu ați fi ales acest drum, al artei lirice, ce altceva v-ar fi plăcut să faceți, să profesați?

Cred că m-aș fi ocupat de design interior. Apartamentul de la Atena eu mi l-am decorat, de la A la Z. Am ales culorile la pereți, am ales mobila, totul.

– După atâția ani de studiu intens, ce ați aflat că este muzica?

Este, cred, cel mai minunat dar pe care Dumnezeu ni l-a lăsat pe pământ. Muzica te poate face să plângi, să fii fericit, să fii în extaz, să trăiești absolut toate stările. Nu cred că am putea trăi fără muzică, indiferent care ar fi ea, clasică, ușoară, populară. Cred că oamenii ar fi mult mai triști fără muzică.

– Nu considerați astăzi, după atâția ani, că norocul dvs. a fost tocmai faptul că audițiile de la Opera Națională din București nu au dat roade și, astfel, vi s-a deschis un drum către marile scene ale lumii?

Am suferit foarte mult atunci, pentru că am participat la trei sau patru audiții la Opera Națională din București și nu am fost admisă. Am plecat în Austria, am dat o audiție într-un teatru mic din sudul Austriei, la Klagenfurt, și acolo am fost acceptată, debutând internațional cu rolul Contessa, din opera ”Nunta lui Figaro”, de Mozart. De acolo a început totul. După aceea, am realizat că, de fapt, Dumnezeu avea un alt plan pentru mine. Eu, la București, la facultate, am intrat prima. Am fost 5 sau 6 pe loc, erau numai 18 locuri și, fără să mă pregătesc cu absolut nimeni la București, am intrat prima, datorită a ceea ce m-a învățat maestra mea, Elena Botez.

– Se câștigă bine din această profesie?

Depinde cât de norocos ești. Se câștigă foarte bine, se câștigă bine, se câștigă prost, depinde de conjunctura și locul în care nimerești. Un artist liric are o viață profesională scurtă.Trebuie să stai cu sănătatea foarte bine, pentru că o mică răceală te pune în imposibilitatea de a cânta. Vocea nu funcționează dacă organismul nu este perfect sănătos, iar publicul nu te iartă absolut deloc, te taxează imediat. Depinde de înzestrarea genetică pe care o ai. În general, la 60 de ani, cariera ta s-a încheiat, poate chiar mai devreme. Depinde cum te protejezi, depinde de repertoriul pe care-l abordezi. Este o profesie riscantă. Te poți trezi a doua zi fără voce.
