Pokemon Legends Z-A: Starter Prediction (but it's actually about more than that)

Since the announcement of this surprisingly early return to Kalos, there's been a lot of speculation regarding the starters. Following the trend of Legends: Arceus, we're expecting the starters to be ones from other regions. Snivy and Piplup seem like really likely choices given their inspirations, with things more up in the air for the fire starter. However, I have a different Idea.

The starters for Legends: Z-A will be...

...Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie, the same starters pokemon X and Y had.

Why, you may ask? A couple reasons, or rather, one main one...

Mega Evolution will be making its grand return in ZA. When this feature was first introduced, it was a way to breathe new life into old designs, without having to commit to a new evolution-even accessiable to pokemon who already had a three-stage line. This idea for rejuvinating old pokemon has stuck around, but not in the same way.

Gen 7 decided to leave Megas as they were and brought along Regional Variants. Generation 8 cut megas entirely, but brought the variants back alongside new evolutions of those variants and Gigantamax Forms. Legends: Arceus continued the variant + evo angle, including the starters...

...and then, gen 9 only gave only two old pokemon variants, with Paradox Pokemon taking up the majority of the "revamp old designs" idea as well as the small amount of so-called "convergent" pokemon, or regional fakes. Quite a few old pokemon even got straight-up normal evolutions.

My point is, when Game Freak makes a new way to rejuvenate old designs, the old way is reduced or not used at all...could the same not be true when bringing back an old idea? To put it bluntly, The Kalos Starters will receive Mega Evolutions.

-Lack of Kalos Megas. Out of all the pokemon introduced in XY, only Diancie received a Mega Evolution. The reasoning apparently being to let these pokemon stand on their own first, but it's been long enough, hasn't it? Especially for these three.

A few reasons to back up why this could be the case:

-Limited Scope. Legends: ZA is stated to be taking place entirely within Lumiose City. and while we know little of the specifics, one big city as opposed to an entire region leaves a lot less room for possible regional variants. All the more likely the old gimmick will take most if not complete focus.

-Starter Saturation. Assuming Legends: ZA beings back all previous mega evolutions, both the kanto and hoenn sets of starters will be bouncing around Lumiose. With the Kalos starters included as well, that's three sets of starters for one game. Legends Arceus only had two, and as shown with that game's 240-ish amount of pokemon, Legends will likely have a more limited pokedex than the main series. Feels like too much to throw in a fourth set.

-Galarian Precedent. The Base game for Pokemon Sword and Shield did not give its starters Gigantamax forms, but the DLC for it did. It's likely the same idea, but for megas, was intended for whatever XY followup was scrapped back in the early 2010s.

-Once isn't a trend. Some might site Legend Arceus' use of other starters as a trope of the "Legends" series, but Legends Arceus was only one game. We have no idea how much or how little of that game's ideas will continue into this one.

And well...They're in one game! The complete set of Kalos starters only had one set of games to enjoy being those starters, while starters of previous and later generations had multiple sets, or at least DLC continuation, to be >your< first partner in. I think they need another shot while not competing with pokemon that have had more chances to be picked, like snivy or piplup.

And...yeah, as someone who loves regional variants, speculated on what variants of other starters could look like and even somewhat preferts variants to mega evolution as a concept...I might be a little bummed if this prediction comes true. But the more I thought about it, the more likely this seemed, and the true Kalos starters frankly deserve getting what the kanto and hoenn starters got. Besides...

Have you done opinios for the sv starter evolutions yet? What are your thoughts on Meowscarada? I think it gives more 2nd evolution than final

In my opinion, I think this gen's starters and their evos are pretty strong as a whole, with some good middle evos to boot. I really like Floragato here in particular—I'd almost consider running it with an everstone if Fuecoco didn't exist.

If you read my review of it, you'll recall I found Sprigatito to be nicely designed but a bit generic, with no particular theme to speak of and pretty standard grass-type visuals. Floragato fixes that by standing up (while still retaining stocky, cat-like anatomy) and adding in some darker coloration to hint at its eventual typing, which adds just enough visual spice that it starts to feel more unique.

What I particularly like about it is the yo-yo. It's a simple enough visual, but it's super fun and gives Floragato something unique to it and it alone, preventing it from falling into the "middle stage that only exists to transition between A and B" trap that many middle evos do. More importantly, it hints at its trickster nature that leads into it gaining dark typing and a magician theme when it evolves.

My only visual nitpick, which I'll get into more with Meowscarada, is that the neutral green is completely unnecessary; everything that color could just be the dark green and nothing would be lost. It's particularly bothersome on the front leaf, which suddenly changes color with no reason why. Other than that, however, I think this design is solid.

I remember really not caring for Meowscarada when it was first leaked, but looking at the official art via scans, it's much better than I gave it credit for initially. I think the problem is that it has kind of a janky in-game model, which has a weird mouth and slightly too-round eye shapes that throw it a bit.

Anyway, as a whole, I do think it's got the right idea. Despite it being a magician Pokemon of sorts with maybe some carnival elements, it very specifically reminds of a pierrot (poofy "sleeves", neck ruffles, diamonds over the eyes, small pinched mouth) crossed with a jester (the mask and cheek fur).

I also mentioned in my original review that I hoped they were going for an Iberian Lynx kind of thing, and that ended up being true with the cheek scruff, short tail, and paw shapes. I do wish they worked the lynx ear tufts into the mask, but it's nice to have a lynx Pokemon that actually somewhat looks like a lynx and not a lion.

Visually, Meowscarada makes sense as a final evo; the mask comes from the dark parts of Sprigatito's and Floragato's faces, the cheek fur was always there as were the pink accents, the cape is derived from Sprigatito's neck leaf, etc. It doesn't suddenly change themes or visuals out of nowhere, and everything in the design makes sense as a logical conclusion to the line.

So why don't I feel more strongly about it? I think my big problem is the colors. It has four colors in its palette: pink, green, green, And Green. The "middle" shade of green is unnecessary, and only serves to lower the contrast of the design (this is especially noticeable with the diamonds on the mask, which blend into the rest of it). I also feel like the mask is too big and too rigid compared to the cheek fur, and the perfectly round "cuffs" near the paws make its arms look swollen instead of fluffy.

Here's a small edit I did to try to show what I mean visually (original on right):

I adjusted the mask shape to be a little more jester-like and made the paws dark green with fur cuffs so they parallel the legs visually. I also removed the middle green for higher contrast, and redistributed the pink to put focus on the cape, which is more important to the design than stuff like the paw pads.

I know all that's pretty nitpicky stuff, but it's the nitpicky stuff that kind of throws this design for me and makes me like Floragato more. It's not bad—but it could've been a better with just a bit of refinement and simplification.

As a whole, I'd say the Sprigatito line is pretty strong; it has a clear theme, logical typing, and a clear visual through line. Each stage also has their own unique attributes that make them both stand out and work as a whole. I do think Meowscarada's design could've stood to have a few tweaks made in the color department, but it's otherwise one of the stronger starter lines we've gotten in recent years.

Feebas & Milotic

Feebas (#349)

Serpiscis deformis

General Information: A rather shabby looking fish-like Pokémon, Feebas are around 2 feet long (0.6 M) and weigh approximately 16.3 pounds (7.4 kg). They evolve into Milotic.

Habitat: Feebas are native to the New World and the Pacific Ocean. No one knows why they aren’t found in all oceans, but they aren’t. They do not like urban areas, but Feebas are known to thrive even in oxygen-poor environments like weed-choked ponds. The family is tolerant to freshwater and saltwater alike, just like their closest relatives, Magikarp. Its preferred habitat is to live at the bottom of lakes.

Life Cycles: Feebas hatch in clutches of 5-8 eggs every winter, where they are then vigorously defended by their parents for the next six months of their lives. Feebas are capable of reproduction starting at level 15, and they will parent their clutches aggressively, too, however they are much less effective at this than their Milotic counterparts. Once the Feebas begins to fend for itself, it’s generally able to evade predation by its uncanny ability to resemble an old diseased carcass, both visually and aromatically. The only things known to eat Feebas on occasion are Jellicents, Sharpedos, Dhelmises, and Tentacruels, Eelektrosses, and Ursarings and Ursalunas in the Spring with little other options.

The mating season for Feebas (and Milotic) is in the Fall, where they pair up for the season. Feebas tend to only be able to mate with each other, as other species find them revolting.

Evolution: Research has shown that Feebas evolve when they develop a strong sense of feeling beautiful. This is fundamentally difficult to measure and predict, and it does leave the extremely self-conscious Feebases left out—but never fear! As it turns out, when Feebas are truly learning to love themselves, they develop a Prism Scale! The production of the Prism Scale is actually what triggers the evolution. These scales can also grow and fall off of Milotics, though rarely, which is why sometimes you can find a random Prism Scale and use it to evolve your self-conscious Feebas.

Behavior: Feebas and Milotic are tame and docile compared to Gyarados. In fact, the Feebas line is considered highly suitable for young trainers and are even given out as starters in some parts of the world.

Diet: Feebas will eat just about anything that they can fit their mouths around. Trainers beware!

Conservation: Threatened

In light of many recent ecological changes, Feebas are being encouraged by global Pokémon trainer associations to be given out to new trainers as starter Pokémon in more jurisdictions. The idea is this: it will give zoos and restoration breeders more funding and resources in order to repopulate wild populations, while giving many perfectly suitable pets to trainers in the hopes of bringing more positive attention to the plight of Feebas.

Relationship with Humans: Feebas are readily forgotten about by most people. They’re ugly, shabby, stink, and resemble a diseased corpse. Still, they do make great pets and are loyal companions, so there are some districts that give them out as starter Pokémon, but typically these are jurisdictions with many other choices, to minimize abandonment. But there is a vocal minority who adore Feebas, akin to those in the real world who adore blobfishes.

Classification: Feebas are in the genus Serpiscis alongside Magikarp and Gyarados. Their last common ancestor is speculated to have been around 3 million years ago.

Milotic (#350)

Serpiscis elegans

General Information: Milotic are majestic sea serpents that grow to be an average of 20’04 feet long (6.2 M) and weigh 357.1 pounds (162 kg). They are said to released a calming aura that helps ease arguments and tensions. The scales on Milotic change color depending on the angle!

Habitat: Milotic are native to the New World and the Pacific Ocean, and can be found in freshwater lakes. How did they get there? Who knows. While they sleep at the bottom of large lakes, they tend to exist in the upper sunlit zones during their waking hours. In the ocean, Milotics cannot be found deeper than the twilight zone.  

Life Cycles: Their mating cycles remain the same as Feebas. Milotic vigorously co-parent their baby Feebas for the first six months of their life. Each clutch has 5-8 eggs. When the Feebas leave their parents, typically about 3-6 of them have survived. The rest are picked off rarely either by predators or human trainers.

Behavior: Feebas and Milotic are tame and docile compared to Gyarados. Do not mistake a Milotic’s docility for being a pushover though because these beautiful sea serpents are very good parents and will aggressively protect their Feebas clutches from predators.

Diet: Milotic eat vegetation, a stark contrast to their omnivory of their pre-evolved forms.

Conservation: Threatened

Milotic are rare in the wild naturally, but the introduction of Gyarados into New World lakes has seen a decrease in Feebas that survive to be a Milotic. There are freshwater protections in the New World in large part because of conservation efforts to keep Milotic habitats thrive-able. However, loss of habitat from humans and invasive species still has wild Milotic at lower-than-should-be numbers. As it stands, Milotics are considered a threatened species, but not endangered. Ocean Milotics have different risks, instead having to deal with poachers and accidentally getting caught in fishing nets, or consuming too much plastic as Feebas, etc.

Relationship with Humans: Milotics are much-beloved symbols of beauty, and many are unaware that Feebas evolve into Milotic. They are symbols of the beauty and fashion worlds.

Because of their calming presence, Milotics are sometimes utilized in therapeutical settings.

Milotic have been artistic muses to humanity for millennia across the Pacific Ocean and in the New World. They are some of the earliest depictions of Pokémon from peoples in those regions. Milotic are largely considered the most beautiful Pokémon in the world.

There is a version of “The Ugly Duckling” in this world called “The Ugly Magikarp” and it’s about a Feebas adopted by a school of Magikarp, and it grows up thinking its just an ugly Magikarp. Then after a series of fantastic events, the Feebas evolves into a Milotic and goes on to live with other Milotic.

Classification: Milotic are in the genus Serpiscis. They are a member of the O/M/G clade.

Sprigatito Line

Sprigatito- Perfect in every way

Floragato- A distinguished gentleman and I love the yo-yo

Meowscarada- Honestly kinda mixed at this point. I love the masquerade theme, but as with a big part of the community, I wish he had remained on all 4. I think they’ll grow on me though, and I hope to see the yo-yo remain a part of the final evolution

Quaxly Line

Quaxly- a fine young man, who although is my least favorite of the 3 starters, is still really cute

Quaxwell- this is going based on the tiny sprite leak, so honestly not much to say yet, but he looks decent. Kinda just a taller Quaxly

Quaxuaval- not a big fan so far. The blue looks hella bright and the feet kinda weird me out. Like looks more like a chicken then a duck at this point. But that is just the sprite so hopefully should look better as a 3d model

Fuecoco Line

Fuecoco- Absolute perfection. A fine Chonky little boy who will be with me from the start

Crocalor- A fire Sombrero. A FUCKING FIRE SOMBRERO. I LOVE THIS LITTLE GUY

Skeledirge- fucking awesome. If leaks are to be believed (which applies to each of these to begin with), he will be fire ghost which is an epic pairing. It also looks like it is the Singer Pokémon so I would like to see what music themed attacks we get out of the boy

All of this is going off of leaks so validity is still yet to be seen. But I honestly do like this new set of starters. Quaxly is the most underwhelming line, but I feel both Quaxly and Sprigatito will grow on me as I play through the game. Still as excited as ever.

Over more than an hour later this is more ‘crow comments on almost every new pokemon, oops’. I am passionate about cool designs... I didn’t mean to come for bogleech’s throne!

 Under spoiler tag because I was lucky to play without having been spoiled on ANY of them and I want to keep that experience, total spoilers ahead.....

I was so annoyed the cute grass kitty immediatly became bipedal, but I really do dig the whole line, even the last one. The base is SO cute I LOVE kitty and being a sort of bandit and then a magician is cool. Especially enjoy how the final form is bipedal but not THAT humanoid- it’s a neutral body rather than being uncomfortably curvy or gendered. Also as I look at it: final form kinda is a lot like how I draw my eye deers in terms of “fluffy pastel body, long skinny darker legs”

I’m so sorry they did this to the duck. I’M SO SORRY. the duck was cute and then the middle is ugly and the final.... in battle usually the tail is extended and it’s obviously a ‘festivale’ thing, but it’s so unsettling. I hate how human it is, it’s dancing.... I hate this creature and for it to be a STARTER feels so unfair. who okay’d it.

I always loved dunspace as a kid playing gold silver, even tho it was useless. It was so mystifying looking and... odd. It was the pokemon that really most felt like a cryptic mystery of a being, you know? Like what the hell IS it? I’ve learned since it’s like... Tsuchinoko, maybe. But for it to FINALLY have an evolution that is almost entirely identical is really funny to me. Yep. That sure is just dunsparce. I mean. Dudunsparce. It’d have been cool for him to suddenly be a giant badass snake monster but this is better

Okay two off: TaROUNtula is adorbs and his evolution sucks. a little yarn ball spider with a kinda dopey face is really cute and then he turns into... way too dude shaped and really unappealing. He doesn’t look much like his pre-form and loses all the charm. A spider with a spindle it uses to make traps is great but why this??

Dolliv is super super cute. I love the many grass and bug pokemon that are just ‘cute girls’. I don’t like humanoid pokemon, but a lot of them are more stylised human than bordering on uncanny, and they look cute and fun. Dolliv works with her theme perfectly and is extremely cute. But man I was really REALLY happy to see Arboliva !! She’s funky and stylish in a different way. Sure, we could have another Tsureena line, where the end is basically a plant ginjinka gal, but while still hhumanoid Arboliva is way funkier. She usually is in a wreath shape too to better show off her design. I love her colour pallete too. She feels like something I’d make....

how can you not love this little face. His weird metal collar and his funky arms that he usually stows. Those eyes tho. He’s so cute and simple.

I wouldn’t normally like anything about this design. Like, it’s fine, but very very simple and  nothing screams pokemon about it. But extra shoutout: they are VERY funny. The names are both great (Maushold is one of the few times I sensibly chuckle at a pun name) and the fact they almost always evolve when you’re not looking- and their evolution is having children- is great. I was worried it was a glitch but I hope (and believe) it’s on purpose. You one day look and OH SHIT! THEY HAD CHILDREN. I thought I’d gone insane for a moment and missed it, 10/10 experience I carried this couple in my bag and they gave birth without telling me

I know birds are... hard. because they’re birds. But what is WRONg with the birds this gen? I don’t despise any of them, but they’re the most Bird Birds I’ve ever seen. The flamingo is litterally a flamingo full stop. The stork is mostly a stork, the weird flesh sack it carries creeps me out and without it it’s. Just A Stork?! Wattrel as a seabird is Fine as a first evolution, but it’s evolve really bores me. And Squawkabilly is a nice pun and most pokemon looking, but still very plain. He has four plumages and yet who will care? He also so clearly needs an evolution to lean harder on the theme.

Hehe........ crab. I love giant enemy crab. He’s very charming. Eeriely robotic. The idea of him as an ambush predator is cool, I wish in game he actually WOULD blend in and strike you!

I didn’t like the first evo at all but he’s here for context, because once I evolved him I was enamoured. Just like minecraft......... but really, a blocky, salt construct is cool. I love his colours on the evo while the middle stage looks like a sweet little dude.

his mini pic isn’t the best, so here’s him better. Not normally my type of poke at ALL but she’s just really charming to me. Big blocks. Love the sediment layer ombre.

His little image isn’t very clear. This rock/poison flower.... what is he? A crystal that looks like a flower but isn’t. I really don’t know what is the inspiration beyond just ‘crystal-ish flower’, but he looks both very futuristic and like some prehistoric plant! The strange little eyes and the transparent cone at the front add to the mystery.

I don’t think I LIKE Shroodle but it’s hard to hate those empty eyes. I raised one for ages because I HAD to know what he was. A crocodile of some sort was my bet. Apparently it’s a ‘mouse’ which is then more confusing when it turns into a monkey. I think on reflection he might be designed on a spray paint can... his evo is a grafiti monkey, and he has a long shiny body with a black cap, with a tuft of paintbrush like hair! but he’s def not a monkey.

Grafaiai tho is a very cool design. I hate monkeys and apes but a lemur can stay, it has a cool design and colors and I really enjoy the wide glossy eyes.

this one was just an insant win for most everyone. Bread dog! And then he gets BAKED! he’s really cute and I definitely called he’d be a dash-bun before he evolved

This old ass dog....... it’s not just that he has a very endearing story role but that helps. He’s nothing really too special, but he has such sweet eyes and really captures the feeling of a fking old ass dog....... like this is a dog that was MADE to lay on the living room floor for hours and grumble in his sleep!!

I hate gimmighoul!!!!!! AAA!!! No, seriously, what is up with this guy? Without the chest it looks like... a sentai...? I’ve never been a fan in gen of power rangers or super sentai designs anyways but it’s my best guess for what this bastard is. The base version vaguely also makes me think cockroach, but sadly needs to be 300% more cockroach. The chest version would be fun- pokemon has mimics but not the classic treasure chest!- except... he keeps poking his stupid head out, which doesn’t at all bring to mind a mimic! The chest form is indeed just the bastard in a box, no unique changes.

THEN THE EVOLUTION.... who the hell is this roadside used car lot advertising man and why does he make me look for so many of his stupid children to earn the right to hate him? This design is so confusing for me. What is he? Bad. His pokedex entry tells me he’s 1000 stacked coins but looks more like a bullet.

god he does resemble like a 90s ad campaign to appeal to the youth and get them to stop smoking huh. But really, for the amount of annoying effort and time it takes to get him, he is not worth it at all. Horrendous thing. Stupid thing. AAA. aaa.

Seriously, I never liked gimmeghoul but I definitely imagined a fitting final form would be way bigger on the ‘treasure’ theme. He has a chest form and you collect coins- imagine if he was a riff on a treasure hoard instead! A long serpant busting through a treasure box covered in coins, a mimic who hides as a great hoard barely poking out, a centipede with coins as armor....

Okay, I played violet, so the past pokemon I didn’t get to see. On beating the main story I decided to look finally at the full dex so I could see all the version exclusives. I quite enjoy them, and while I liked violet’s designs old pokemon exclusives/legend more the ancient pokemon are nicer than the robots.. because the robots gimmick is continously the same ‘a pokemon but robot’.

This jigglypuff is very funny to me. She’s kinda just a joke of ‘cute jigglypuff but with little fangs’ but I can’t resist her charms.

Also^ I think pokemon doesn’t know how long ONE BILLION YEARS is.

Admittedly she’s a very plain riff on misdreveous, but I’ve always liked misdreaveous and she looks neat. I like her spikes, not sure why she has one green wing arm. It’s nice the pearl necklace evolved early imao

Volcarona is such a lovely pretty moth, and this version is super cool. I love how they tweaked with her regular features and made her so similar but so new. It’s just a SUPER cool bug and I really really love her

So salamance might be my fav pokemon ever by childhood bias: Ruby was a very dear game and I raised a salamance from a bagon up to level 100! Then I kept the same salamance and transferred him between games, up to Platinum. I love that weird, fat dragon.... he’s a popular pokemon, so has had a lot of extra forms, and they all suck

Salamance is a brightly coloured (but teal and pale red not the godawful tones of his mega) fat dragon. I keep saying fat but someone has to remind Pokemon. He’s a big and solid boy, but mega evo takes away that (and his arms) and makes him this super tacky bizarre monstrocity. Now we have Roaring Moon....

What is this? The idea of a feathery funky salamance is great, I appreciate even it resembles the mega evolution since gimicks are lately just one generation then forgotten. But his body shape and colors are so odd and messy. He looks really thrown together with a few basic good ideas that are completely not working!

TREAT SALAMANCE BETTER

I have really no strong feelings on the robot pokemon, meanwhile. They... look cool enough, ish. They’re robots that look like other pokemon. The designs really don’t do anything crazy interesting though, even tho they make changes it’s nothing radical. I only put Iron Hands here because I want you to know in a lore book you can find, it’s said Iron Hands is maybe a cyborg, not a pokemon, and might have a living person in there somehow. That weirds me out.

I definitely do wish the techno future pokemon did more though! Instead of just being ‘robot very similar to other pokemon’, it feels we’re missing out on ‘more evolved’ versions of pokemon or robot-flesh mixes.  My immediate pitch for a more evolved (in IRL biology) pokemon from the future? An extremely fierce magicarp that has finally become strong! Or a bagon that has skipped needing to be salamance and has adapted wings of its own! There’s so much potential to look at odd pokemon and imagine how they might adapt over years of natural evolution. You also could do robo-flesh hybrids as said, where I have no exact ideas but something like... A combee that has adapted to work with nanorobots in a swarm? Hell, put magicarp in a mechasuit and say in the future magicarp has learned to psychically build mecha suits. Why not.

okay, she’s pretty cool tho. I def like to see gardevoir/gallade fusion one, who def makes the most bold changes to the design too (well, I guess iron treads is nothing like donaphan REALLY, but...). Haters gonna hate her nonbinary girl swag. Glad to see in the far future we’ve finally ended gender. Etc etc.

The ruinous legends are super, super cool designs. All of them are some of the TOP creature designs I’ve seen in ages tbh. I haven’t gotten in game to unlocking them or looked if they have lore (I hope there’s a lot of lore, mysterious ruinous beads sealed by ominous swords and giant doors is sick but I want more). Each is based on a cursed object that is so full of a negative emotion it has become tied to a pokemon and sealed away. GREAT STUFF.

Anyways, love this totemic beast and the big ancient cracked blood sacrifice bowl on their head. And yes, it’s totally a blood sacrifice pokemon: it’s linked to fear, as the bowl was said to have been used in ancient rituals and evoked such strong fear it became a horrible creature.

This guy minus the sword would fit in pretty well as a regular pokemon, admittedly. I find her colours really pleasing. The sword adds a bit more of that ‘legendary’ flair but does look a bit awkward impaled like that. But no, I really enjoy him.

OMG OMG OMG! AAA!!!! LOOK!!!!!

I am not a slug person (I am actually terrified of slugs irl) but. I loveeee this design. It’s clever (look at the both eyestalks and the false lead face) and extremely themeatic, with a great colour pallette. This thing screams spooky nature spirit in every way.

Though my least fav I felt I should throw in all four special legends. Plus, nothing about them is bad. I find the eyes rather awkward but they do invoke a bulged eyed goldfish. All four legends are based on cursed objects, so this feels like an okay way to add the beads to the fish... but not my fav. I do enjoy tho his patterns on his body. They’re just very stylish.

The box legends... are okay in their battle forms. I didn’t expect to really like them, but the writing is good and I really loved my robot motorcycle dragon by the end.

they’re far more appealing and charming to me in their ‘low power’ mode, which is what they are for most of the game. It’s nice to go ‘oho! badass battle time!’ but, meh. The more animal funky little guy form who loves sandwiches is better.

She’s a bit funny looking but really nice. She’s a cute little... something. I again am fine with human shaped pokemon when they’re still monsters, not people, not overly sexy people. Her middle stage is really cute to me as a sort of little knight, and then her last stage gives her adorable hair and a giant hammer. Classic design trope, but I love it! She’s cute and small but extremely strong and fun. I enjoy that her pokedex entry tells us she’s a BANDIT, not a blacksmith-knight.

The version exclusive branching knight evolve really feels like it should have been in sword shield, huh? But even tho it’s not normally the type I like... I am not immune to cool cursed knight with violet flames. he’s edgy and cool and fun, and I think perfectly balances between simplicity and very detailed-  his design doesn’t look cluttered to me at all despite how complex it is!

I have received a vision while catching all the starters in the new Pokemon dlc and so it must be shared. It's time forrrrrr.....

WHICH POKEMON STARTERS EACH OF THE BALDURS GATE 3 CHARACTERS WOULD HAVE

I am basing this off the final evolutions of each starter, for example infernape instead of chimchar

1. Wyll: I believe in my heart of hearts this man would be best fucking friends with an empoleon. Not only would empoleons steal and water typing make it very effective as a shield for the week, especially against demons, but empoleons personality generally is very proud and upstanding. Like Wyll, it is proud but not prideful, not full of arrogance or superiority, but the pride of responsibility and leadership. I feel like they both represent something more than they are.

Also I think both Wyll and Empoleon are extremely cool and swag. Thats just me tho

2. Lae'zel: I think Lae'zel would love a Feraligatr, and not because of any fucking jokes about what githyanki look like! I think she would deeply appreciate the ferocity and power that feraligatr has, with its incredible bite force and powerful legs. there isn't a lot in the pokedex about its personality, but I like to imagine it as a creature with a lot of loyalty, it sticks to those it has grown close to and will fight by their side until the bitter end. I think they would "spar" (read: play fight) often, with Lae'zel trying to give it more formal training, especially since totodile is known for having little control of its incredible jaw strength. I don;t think she would like that uncontrolled strength.

3. Karlach: Karlach is the genesis of this stupid idea. I caught a tepig and thought, 'man, karlach would love an emboar' and I am fucking correct. Karlach obviously needed a fire type, and nothing suits her more perfectly than one of the Fire/Fighting types. Emboar not only fits her personality, but also her fighting stye, with its Black and white 2 pokedex entry saying "A flaring beard of fire is proof that it is fired up. It is adept at using many different moves." literally perfect for 'set my engine on fire and i am a master of killing diffderent varieties of demon' karlach. Not only that, but its original pokemon black entry has the line "It cares deeply about its friends." Emboar is Karlach the pokemon.

4: Gale: This man needs a Delphox in his life fucking immedietly for a multitude of reasons. First of all, psychic types are genrally supposed to be smarter than your average person, so hopefully another companion like tara who would be able to keep with his smart ass. Speaking of his intelligence, we all know, despite this man's vast fucking intellect, he does not have the best foresight, making decisions that seem good in the short term, but not so great long term. Delphox can fix that! According to its X entry, it can literally see the future! let this man know if fucking with strange magic will go well or not. Also, its hidden ability is magician and its basically a witch. All in all, solid companion for Gale/

5. Shadowheart: This one was a bit harder, but if we are talking about early game, still devoted to shar shadowheart, its got to be incineroar because it dont think any other starter matches incin for sheer drama value. Its literally and on fire cat that is also a pro wrestler. Also the secondary dark typing and edginess fits. If we are talking late game, Selunite shadowheart, Meganium. Maganium's whole bit is renewal and healing, giving life where it was previously taken away. The only starter that could be better at healing is primarina and that doesn't fit shadowheart as well as meganium does. I think the whole evolution line fits shadowheart pretty well as well. Starting with Chicorita, a barely sprouting flower, through Bayleef, where you can finally see the beginnings of the vibrant flower that is Meganium. I think that is somewhat mirrored in shadowhearts process of growing into herself throughout the acts, as she finds who she is without shar.

6. Astarion: I think this one was the hardest for me, but I think it has to go to Decidueye. A ghost type archer whose signiture move is about taking control the battlefield by locking their opponents down? seems to fit with Astarion pretty well. The dex entry holds pretty true as well, stating that "Although (Decidueye is) basically cool and cautious, when it’s caught by surprise, it’s seized by panic." I am unsure if Decidueye is the perfect fit for astarion but the only other one I could imagine him with is greninja, but i dont think it fits as well as decidueye.

Anyway! thats the main six. I might do additional ones later. The Shadowheart and Astarion ones are definitely the weakest, but I think they are still pretty good

I decided to try creating pokemon variants or similar that one might find in my home state of Ms. I'm still working on more but it's a fun thought and doodle experiment

I'm also indulging my younger self. See a long, long time ago when I was a kid, I used to see my home as a place you could easily find pokemon around the corner. Tauros in the fields, Noctowl in the trees, the wasps were angry Beedrill, you get the idea

It was magical, a time before greed and capitalism caused rushed and unfinished games with questionable decisions by game freak higher ups. A time where I could just kinda look at the tall grass or the woods and see pokemon just living naturally without feeling a ton of responsibility or guilt for existing.

Recently I've decided to try exploring that AU, where states and such have their own dexes. Obviously some would overlap, like I'm very sure the Gulf Coast would have very similar dexes, but my idea would be that could start out with different starters that have different variant evolutions- and heck, you could even cross state borders to get theirs if that's what you wanted.

But for now, without getting way too deep, I decided to make variants based on critters that either exist here or have some sort of cultural tie in.

Let's go:

Typhlosion, Fire/Ground, low temp fires but also used for welding and construction, trusted with kids because they don't tend to start fires they don't quickly put out. The original line is already kinda mixed of badgers, weasels, moles, etc, but I think there's plenty of those here, and if nothing else Cyndaquil IS the fire mouse pokemon, and by God we got mice. Favoritism put it here admittedly since Cyndaquil was my very first pokemon in the games, and I'd want the same irl.

Blastoise, Water/Rock, basically more of a mobile tank people ride on. Uses the bubbles around its legs as wheels. Based on box turtles that live here

Chesnaught, Grass/Steel, based on various loggers and blue collar workers from here, helps with those sort of jobs and is pretty intelligent. It can form shields or slice up trees easily with its arm saws.

Yanma, Bug/Flying, based on dragonflies I see around the house

Yanmega, Bug/Steel, evolves while knowing Steel Wing. Tends to eat rusted metal from old farms and junk yards, very quick

Salandit, Ice/Electric, based on blue tailed skinks I see around my house often

Freezard, Ice/Electric, evolves from male ms Salandit. They take things by force if they want and their tails can be used as whips. Usually the females keep them in line though.

Corvilich, Flying/Rock- actually a cross over from a fan region I dabble in during my spare time. Lots of crows and corvids here, so naturally I think they'd be here too. Evolves from Corvisquire. They fight each other over nice bones and are great fliers, and are very intelligent, may or may not have good and bad omens associated

Miltank, Water/Normal, based on cows I see often taking dips in local ponds. Ms is a very farm heavy state, so I could see us having our own moomoo milk market. The arms and legs act like floaties.

Dragonite, Dragon/Fairy, evolves from Dragonair with high friendship. I wanted a psuedo legend, and then I found out Ms has its own dragon stories (even a town). I also thought it'd be neat to make a friend you'd maybe see in a forest, so I also added butterfly elements to it from the Great Purple Hairstreak.

I'm still making more, I'm progressing and getting a little better as I go, but I don't wanna get too crazy making a bunch. I'm thinking maybe about the same amount as Legends Arceus introduced. I do want to try making a full, balanced team, though, so I'll probably make more for that. So far though I could see myself with Typhlosion, Corvilich, Freezard, and Dragonite. Looking for a water type and maybe a doggo.

Pokemon Scarlet Playthrough: Part the 7th, I get lost again but this time it's the mountains and tunnels, I fought a hungry businessman, and then got lost again but even worse

So as I always do, I wondered off and got a bit lost in the mountains. I was exploring while trying to make my way to the normal gym. First I thought I was wondering off in the tunnels before realizing I was going the right way. Then I back tracked so I could explore more. My rock salt friend evolved again, now it looks like a golem. And my starter evolved to it's finale form too.

I wondered around the mountains for awhile before being like, "I should save this for later." So I'm going to do it later. I ran into a Hawlucha 10 levels above me and I was like "I don't feel like dealing with this."

I ran into another absurdly high level wild Tera Pokemon, like the Espeon. It was an ice Lucario this time. It was level 75. And I was like, "NOPE" So I ran.

I ran into some new Pokemon. He would have guessed that Frill Pokemon would evolve into an Ostridge. I expected it's evolution to look ugly like Slurpuff's evolution looks. But it actually looks great!

One thing I always thought to myself was that if there was going to be a grass/fire Pokemon it would be a pepper. I was right! Called it! So I now have the pepper pokemon.

I also saw the new dragon line. I saw a piece of artwork with it along with other dragons, so I assume that's what it is. I tried to catch it but I didn't know it was ice type, maybe I should have guessed from the name, but I used a super effective move and it fainted.

I also caught the ice whale and ghost dog. I was talking in the last post about trying to get a female Salandit. no need now, I caught a Salazzal in the wild, I'm all good.

Also I underrated how fun High Jumping would be, it's pretty cool actually. So yeah that's it of this session. Gonna play more later. You don't have to wait though, it's all in the same post.

Very short session because I got hungry. Got into the town w/ Normal Gym, currently exploring town before fighting Larry. I know he's popular, so let's see what all the fuss is about. Tinker evolved into Tinkerton. And I caught another Pokemon that I have never seen before, some sort of stork called Bombirdier. So yeah that's it, will play more after I eat.

Speaking of eating... I have completed the normal gym! I really liked the test for this one, it was fun running around town and gathering the info I needed for the test. The battles ended up being kinda easy because I was over leveled and was using a kick ass Flamingo with really high attack, that was holding a held item that increases physical move damage. Seriously, my Wowza is a powerhouse.

I don't I ever mentioned this but I really love the theme that plays when the gym leaders do the Tera thing, it's a hype theme. I also love Tera raid music, but I especially love the music you get when you complete a Tera Raid.

So yeah, kind of ironic that I got really hungry right before the Normal Gym. Larry's alright, I do find it funny that he doesn't really seem to take his Gym Leader position that seriously. It seems like a side gig/hobby to him. I wonder what his actual job is though, is he like an accountant or something? I can't help but wonder how he became a Gym Leader because he doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would go out of his way to get that position.

In unrelated news, what I thought might be undisguised Mimikyu was 100% not that. It was just a big grasshopper. In my defense, you don't really get that much detail in the little map sprites. It's still implied that there is an undisguised form out there, and I want it.

So apparently I can change my Pokemon's Tera type if I get enough shards. I was wondering what the shards are for because I already found a few. So the chef lady is going to cook them into a dish that can do that... I wonder what eating a Tera shard is like, is it like rock candy? Does it get crushed up to become like some sort of weird salt/seasoning? I wonder about the logistics.

So I asked the nurse where I should go next and she said the Dragon Titan. But I'm looking at the map and I'm like r u serious? That's an island! Koraidon can't swim! Is there like a ferry or something? I guess I'll try to see if it's possible but I'll probably end up going someplace else.

Yeah it's impossible, I can't swim and the Pokemon around the area are a bit overleveled for me. I don't know why she told me to go over there. I ended up wondering around A LOT. And catching lots of Pokemon!

I finally caught a Goomy! I tried to catch a Toedstool but this is the 2nd time that it was actually shapeshifter in disguise. I caught a Giraferig, evolved it, and replaced my Tinkerton with it. It's undrleveled compared to the rest of my party but I was just really excited to finally get one. I managed to catch a Pachirisu, they kept getting away from me by climbing up trees, but not this time! I got chu! Also caught the Dung Beetle. I caught another Gimmighoul, but it's much higher level now.

I caught the baby version of the pepper monster I mentioned earlier in this post. I also managed to catch a Tatsugiri. They were in the area that was ovreleveled for me. I only have one form though, they keep using Memento and fainting.

I also evolved some Pokemon using exp candy. So I now have a Dachsbun, Espartha, and Dolliv. I suspect Dolliv evolves one more time.

Anyway there were other Pokemon I caught/Evolved but they aren't worthy of note.

I visited Porto Marinada. The auctioneers there pretty much told me to fuck off. I guess I have to unlock that at a later point. I decided to choose between the water gym and the ground titan as my next target, and I choose the ground titan. The water gym after that, the the dark star raid. Maybe after I beat the ground titan I can swim.

I saw but didn't catch a "Veluza", a Dratini, and also these giant catfish. I wonder if that catfish Pokemon has an evolution now or if this is an unrelated mon. Just checked Pokedex, no room for it to have an additional evolution, must be something new.

Checking the Pokedex... I don't think Kilowattrel evolves again, I'm pretty sure the space after it is meant to be Eevee. Anyway... I think I'm going to leave this post off around here. Next post will probably have a bunch more actual progression.

My opinions on every final evolution starter pokemon beneath the cut

Venusaur is cool. It's just that Ivysaur and Bulbasaur appeal more to me. 7/10

There is literally nothing wrong with Charizard. It's one of THE pokemon of all time. Not complex and it doesn't need to be. Keep on trucking. 9/10

Why he have cat ears? :( Why he lose Wartortle's soft and flowy water bits? :( Cannons are cool though. 5/10

Bayleef was just so good that Meganium is kinda eeehhhhhh... It feels like it's missing SOMETHING. Still cute as hell. 6/10

Badass. Kinda wish it had fire on it's butt like Quilava did though. Looks like a Jotaro Kujo's fursona 8/10

This was my first starter so I'm biased but why can't they ever find a good way to pose this poor guy? It's like those 'eagles facing forward' photos. Also he has human hands. 6/10

IM GOING TO ASSUME MAIN SERIES ENTIRE EVOLUTIONARY STARTER LINES AS OPPOSED TO INDIVIDUAL SPECIES

-3 : Hisui Oshawott

(dont look at the typing in the image)im giving myself a handicap for the least favourite list which is making it wayyyyyy harder (more on that later) so were starting weird spicy,,

the arceus folk were always going to struggle because mixing and matching starters is a dangerous game to play,, theres the very distinct feeling that these creatures dont go together, because they Dont; they have different philosophies informing their designs and you cant avoid that. taken away from their original context, decidueye and oshawott are a little too similar geometry wise in a way starter choices within a gen oft never are.

but hey, ones a samurai, ones an archer, and the other can do the ghostie flames; they fit a little too well thematically for the region not to be picked. what can you do ? ...aside from shrine maiden fennekin line. or a momotarou bulbasaur line. ...thats not what im talking about

what knocks oshawott specifically here is the new final evos. cyndaquil and rowlett march steadily enough towards their final forms; rowletts colours already darken in its middle stage, so the autumn colouring is not a huge shift, and cyndaquil is still becoming upright with flames that envelop it more and more (which hisuian does actually better than vanilla here). oshawotts line is now even less cohesive. it doesnt address a problem with the original that its armour plating is just kind of,, there, haphazardly placed and making it look More naked, but now the drastic colour palette, with less contrast for ease of readability than the original, just make the oshawott line feel that much more unrelated to itself.

i think what kills thiese guys the most is that they stopped at a new final evo. a new second form or, hell, make them variants from the start and call them something else; then i think itd be way more fun

+3 : Snivy

complete transparency here; this one is mostly personal bias. see the most fun time ive ever had with pokémon, which im becoming increasingly confident is gonna stay that way, was spearheaded by this guy. blowing a kiss at the clouds for drayano

but its not like these designs dont have anything going for them on their own !! the way this frilly, pompous jacket collar design it has grasually grows into a snakey cocoon that engulfs all of its limbs is first of all pretty bold of an idea and second of all really really fun !!

the consistent yellow highlights and eyeshadow elements the designs have do a really good job of communicating what a smug regal air this thing puts on, despite some of that not being quite as present as id like. i mean like the smugleaf jokes certainly didnt come outof nowhere yea ?

FUECOCO IS GOOD!! i need to get this out of the way because judging these as lines rather than individually means that sometimes good designs end up getting the short end of the stick. which super is whats going on here

the first thing that strikes me is that it feels like they design a perfectly fine and fun fire croco butremembered it was a spaniard animal, and decided to toss spanish things at it midway through. the use of different words there was deliberate

the second is that... wow where the hell is skeledirge coming from. like the progression from fuecoco to crocalor is perfectly reasonable, and it does its job as a jump to an awkward offputting midstage (compliment), but then,,, the entire head just suddenly crashes straight to a wall unceremoniously, with this unappealing strident geometry to it all, with a thermometer on its face and pencil sharpener on its torso that has Nothing to do with anything the previous evolutions were communicating. the cool things they had going for it were in fact completely abandoned; the silly lil chompy jaws and teeth turn into ugly skin formations, the overt roundness of the creature just becomes a regular crocos with a decreased polycount, and the cool fire headdressings just become this ugly, lampshaded absence. ...doesnt do anything good for me

+2 : Bulbasaur

i think this ones just the platonic ideal for pokémon evolution. it does EXACTLY what it should do without missing a beat. to the point where im struggling to even talk about it

it starts cute and simple but interesting, cute huge bulb in its back, nice green patterns dotting its body, non standard friendly frog face,, and it grows into this huge, flowering beast with warts with a menacing, yet still cute (in a delightfully off way) face. half lidded eyes, sharp fangs in a wide mouth... and in pokémon stadium it does this

it just.... i donno !!! its so creature !!!! it communicates itself well, offers something different but still cohesive from its contemporaries, and its like !!! really unique for their first go at a grass starter !!! like,, a poisonous plant dinosaur ? on their first go ?? yes girl !!!!!

the one thing that leaves me wanting about the line is the slight change in body colour; it feels too slight to communicate much to me and it ends up being a bit distracting ? but as you can see, its such a minor thing, and im just saying it to make it seem like i have more to say than i actually do

ugh theres just... so much going on here and i really dont want to elaborate much. first of all all the base forms feel so naked. scorbunny is the only one i feel is communicating something worth much with the sports tape designs, but thats so little to begin with,,

then the rest of the evo lines come in and. why does the sobble line go from naked sad lizard to naked spy lizard. why does socrbunny get a stupid ugly jacket and then lose it. why is grookey line so boring.

theres not a single hit here. 9 chances to make me feel anything other than uninspired and despondent and bored, and they missed Every single one. i hate them.

+1 : Popplio

what id bet is a very surprising pick for anyone who Knows me because i dont think id ever ever ever pick popplio as my starter in lieu of incineroar. but thats incineroar. this is popplio, brionne, and primarina

so this is every principle from bulbasaur lines design executed with utmost elegance and at a higher scale. first of all, its an interesting idea executed in a novel and fun way. its a little seal !!! it goes bwark !!! it has very sillybab paws that dont let it walk right !!! and it evolves very naturally into a graceful otherworldly singer and performer, keeping your attention in how the colour palette enrichens and grows as it evolves, and reiterating every interesting design element it has with each iteration !!! little clown collar into a gorgeous frilly design, silly little ears into magical ethereal hair, stumpy tail into a majestic mermaids tail !!! ws all around !!!!

another strength it has is,, i think brionne is one of few starter midstages i like in its own merits ? often any attachment i have to midstages work more as,, appreciation of a blueprint. like... "wow i see where this is going to go and i cant wait to get there". i mean, by design, theyre supposed to be awkward, a little "incomplete". but brionne, like,,, baillerina !!! the ears are pigtails now !!! look at that earnest but lil weird smile its got !!!! dawww its my friend !!!!

the finally, it has a lot of strengths on a macro level worth pointing out. and these are compliments i extend to gens 6 and 7 as a whole.

firstly, each starter right off the bat offers something very different. different silhouettes, different vibes, completely different target demographics as soon as you get to look at them in the starter selection.

and secondly, theming. i really like how in gen 6 you have the rpg class and in gen 7 you have the circus performer thing going on; it all feels natural and fun, and ties with the previous point to really inform and shape your preference when you pick one of these creatures, while still having them fit together with each other. its what i wish pokémon had more of

There are actually very few Pokemon that I actively dislike. (In fact some of the few that I actually do dislike are some of the most popular. >.< ) But of the Pokemon that I quite like but people in general don't seem to... Off the top of my head, the first thing to come to mind is Stunfisk. It's ugly and has not very great stats and I love it! :D It's one of those Pokemon that's just so dumb I can't help but to adore it! I even gave Emmet a Stunfisk in A Pale Reflection because I feel like it's the kind of Pokemon that would be right up his alley! Unpopular and terrible stats, but he'll make it work! (Also Stunfisk genuinely has some potential for Double Battles. For some reason it can learn like... All the moves that effect everyone on the field like Earthquake Discharge etc.)

A lot of people in my past experiences have pointed to gen v to say that Pokemon has run out of ideas and makes bad, uninspired Pokemon. Those people are wrong but eh. What can you do, right? But I like gen v and its Pokemon! I think they're mostly great all around! Because of Emmet and Ingo, I do feel like I need to fight for the Klinklang line! Because at least in the context of Emmet and Ingo, they are incredibly fantastic Pokemon that say so much about their characters and I love them! (I also think that I'm the only one to headcanon that those were their starters and not Litwick and Tynamo because Klink just suit the two of them SO well!) Genesect is my favorite legendary, and I think that people overall are just very meh on it. Garbodor is just a good friend! And people who shit on Garbodor are fools I tell you! FOOLS!

Outside of gen v though... People seem very divided on Klefki. People either HATE Klefki or LOVE Kefki. I'm in the camp that loves it personally! I don't know how people feel about Pyukumuku, but I just wanna squish them very badly. I for one LOVED tossing the Pyukumuku back out to sea in gen vi I want to smoosh the friend. I don't think that people have an opinion on Minior generally speaking but I like it because SPACE! SPAAAAAACE!!! SPACE!!!!!!!! Tropius is a friend I quite enjoy that I don't think people hardly ever talk about. Swalot... I have no idea why but Swalot just makes my brain tingle in joy. Maybe it's the mustache. It's probably the mustache. Swalot may just be very gender to me. I too just want to be a giant purple blob with a mustache. Dunsparce may not be a very good Pokemon. But I enjoy it. It's a friend! And I can't exactly put my finger on why my brain is always so pleased to see Chinchou and Lanturn... Probably just because I like bioluminescence...

But overall... Bug Pokemon. Bug Pokemon are terrible, but I love them. I love them oh so very much! If gen v gave us anything, it gave us fantastic Bug-Types! Every single Bug-Type in gen v SLAPS! (Except Durant. Sorry Durant.) I LOVE Bug-Types! Third favorite type! (Ground is #1, second is Ghost (but everyone loves Ghost. I don't think that there is a single Ghost-type that people don't generally love!) and third is Bug!) I also quite like Normal-Types because I like weird little gimmick Pokemon ideas. Normal is definitely an underrated type with a lot of fun little possibilities. I would definitely like to do a monotype run using just Bug or Normal types some time. >.<

So yes. Pokemon! I like! :D

There are a few popular Pokémon that I’m also not particularly fond of either haha

But! There are several Pokémon you’ve named that I absolutely love!! Klinklang was an immediate favorite of mine when Gen 5 came out; we have so few Pokémon that look like actual machines, and I am always wanting more!!

Tropius is another great Pokémon, so underrated; I keep hoping for a second evolution stage, or even pre-evolution stage for it. I have a sitting cuties of Tropius and I love them.

Chinchou is another favorite of mine because it used to be a favorite of one of my childhood friends (and we’re still friends!), so favorite by proxy haha

But yes!! Love love love all of Gen v’s bug types!!! So many good ones; scolipede’s line is one of my favorites.

My mother the great Granny Ruth would always be smiling and joking and what she would refer to as “chiding” you, but not in a harsh way.  I look back on it now and it was like a conversation starter or just a way to get a rise out of you or her version of “how’s it going?”.  Sometimes she would poke me in the belly and ask, “When’s the baby due?” which was her version of you need to be aware of your weight, eat cleaner, exercise more, drink more water!  And who wouldn’t benefit from that?  What messages are we receiving today that can create introspection, deeper thoughts and realizations? It is important now more than ever to say less and mean more.  To be conservative with our words while still conveying a deeper message.  The Buddha said, “Be an observer of the play and not a participant.” Today I see you saying less and meaning more and knowing that when there is time to be in quiet contemplation, it is the best time to receive messages from Spirit.  Just typing this in silence I realized a cardinal just appeared outside on my window.  My mother always comes to me in birds and red cardinals were her favorite.  Look for signs from Spirit and you’ll see more every day.

For poke reviews, I'd like to see what your thoughts are on the Vivillon line, or maybe the Unfezant line? I personally think Pidove is one of the better starter route birds because its evolution doesn't just look like a bigger version of itself.

I already did the Pidove line over here, but as for Vivillon:

I don't know why, but I've always loved the aesthetic of this line. In addition to a square motif, which is used to reflect their paralyzing powder, they also incorporate other shapes, such as triangles and circles. Something about it just really jives with the design part of my brain; it reminds me a bit of modern art (which might be intentional–Vivillon does have a modern pattern that's very Mondrian-esq). It also helps to visually connect the line together and gives them a unique aesthetic different from the other butterfly lines.

I also like how Scatterbug here has a subtle but pleasing brown and warm gray palette that then becomes steadily more colorful as it evolves.

My only thing with Scatterbug is that the head's a bit too big for my tastes; it looks like it's about to fall over. Something about the perfectly rounded back also looks weird to me, most likely because it has no legs to support it back there. I wonder if it couldn't have had another triangle back there like the legs, as a nod to hornworms or something.

Part of me also wonders how necessary it was to get another three stage caterpillar -> pupa -> butterfly line; it feels like Vivillon's gimmick is unique enough that it probably could get away with being a one-stager (I know that's not how butterflies work, but it's a fantasy series). Regardless, Scatterbug is a good foundation for the line.

Spewpa is probably the best cocoon Pokemon out there; I tend to find them underwhelming, as there's only so much you can do with an unmoving pupa stage. It's refreshing to have such a different take on the idea, as instead of doing the usual, Spewpa has a stylized head, with a fluffy blanket of powder around its body (which is also a nice continuation from Scatterbug's collar). It kind of references the idea of a silk cocoon without being too literal about it.

As I said above, I like how it starts to get some color at this stage, and how it continues to play around with the square and circle motif. And, of course, it's its own unique thing; not being too similar to either of the other stages while also clearly visually connecting the two. Good stuff.

Side note: why does Spewpa have highlights in its eyes when Scatterbug doesn't? This isn't important, it's just odd.

I think I've mentioned this before, but Vivillon's actually my favorite butterfly 'mon. First, the aforementioned square motif is continued here, and all the squares and "pixelation" in the wings tie everything together visually, both in terms of the pre-evos and in terms of the different forms. I also love how the compound eyes are three squares, and how the eyes are triangles to tie back into the shape thing. Even little details, like the way each body segment is split half and half and how the wings have the square outcroppings at the tips, add to the overall design.

However, I do have one or two nitpicks. First, I don't love the human mouth; I would've preferred a little ^ shaped mouth to tie into Scatterbug (or a V shape, if you want to make it look happier).

And secondly, the weird oval hind legs look tacked on and don't fit the pre-established shapes; they're particularly weird when the top legs are circular, as they should all be the shame shape. It would've been better if they were all circles, or even all triangles to tie into Scatterbug's legs.

So if I have nitpicks, why is this my favorite butterfly? Simple: one of the best features about butterflies is how their wings are stunningly gorgeous, and how each species has its own colors and patterns. Vivillon's the only butterfly 'mon that really captures this with its different forms:

On top of that, the wing patterns changing depending on your region is somewhat accurate to IRL butterflies (though not to this extreme, obviously). Limenitis arthemis is my favorite example of this; out west, it has white stripes (left), but in the east it's all black/blue (right) to mimic the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtails that live in that region:

Anyway, out of the forms, my favorites are the Pokeball pattern (I love the general design of Pokeballs to begin with, and the circular pattern around the body looks really cool), the ocean pattern (such pretty colors!), the modern pattern (as mentioned above, fits with the pre-existing design), and the polar pattern (very striking). My least fav is probably the monsoon or archipelago pattern (monsoon because the grey doesn't really work, archipelago because the the colors and patterns don't stand out that much). And even then, I wouldn't consider any of the forms bad.

In fact, the only bad thing about it is the mechanics. Having the form depend solely on your IRL region kind of sucks. First, because the Switch requires online to trade, it effectively locks all the forms, the best part, behind a paywall. And even ignoring that, some forms are harder to get than others depending on how many Pokemon fans are in each region; for example, the tundra pattern tends to be rarer as far as I'm aware.

Vivillon's coming back for SV, so maybe they'll consider adding a few forms depending on your in-game area this time? Or perhaps there could be a system where you get the form for your region by default, but could use something like Pokeblocks to change it before evolution? I'd just like an easy(ish) way to obtain all the forms that doesn't require paying to do a trade, basically.

Also, Vivillon is Pokemon #666 and that will never not amuse me.

Overall, the line as a whole has some unique visuals with the shape motif, which also works to tie all the stages together. Scatterbug is good aesthetically but the body is a tad weird, Spewpa is a great and unique take on a cocoon Pokemon, and Vivillon's forms are perfect for a butterfly and quite pretty. Solid A+ from me.

My mother the great Granny Ruth would always be smiling and joking and what she would refer to as “chiding” you, but not in a harsh way.  I look back on it now and it was like a conversation starter or just a way to get a rise out of you or her version of “how’s it going?”.  Sometimes she would poke me in the belly and ask, “When’s the baby due?” which was her version of you need to be aware of your weight, eat cleaner, exercise more, drink more water!  And who wouldn’t benefit from that?  What messages are we receiving today that can create introspection, deeper thoughts and realizations? It is important now more than ever to say less and mean more.  To be conservative with our words while still conveying a deeper message.  The Buddha said, “Be an observer of the play and not a participant.” Today I see you saying less and meaning more and knowing that when there is time to be in quiet contemplation, it is the best time to receive messages from Spirit.  Just typing this in silence I realized a cardinal just appeared outside on my window.  My mother always comes to me in birds and red cardinals were her favorite.  Look for signs from Spirit and you’ll see more every day.
