I love your durge characterization. Like. Their soul slowly growing in to occupy their corpse. Literally standing there like 🧍🏻 as their brain just spews horror at them. The scene where everyone mind melds and the gang is all horrified by the depths of their self loathing and they cannot understand why rlly rlly got me. None of them are equipped to deal w one another’s trauma but they want to, so badly, and it’s one of the things I rlly like abt the group dynamic and I loved the way you wrote it. Also astarion’s flashbacks were absolutely awful and devastating (complimentary, but I am brandishing a stick at you). You also captured the inherent grim hilarity of having an evil butler that encourages your violent intrusive thoughts. Like wow this day can’t get any worse [a little freak scampers up and tells you to disembowel your close friends and companions] fuck’s sake.

it's funny you talk about their soul growing in bc I have Thoughts on that & plans for future fics that I hope to get to. but the short version is because of the circumstances around durge's creation i don't think they'd be made with a soul. like. why would they. they're supposed to be daddy's murderbot why would he give them free will. idk how souls work in the forgotten realms but if mindflayers don't have them i think it makes sense that durge might not either.

the group sees durge as confident & unflappable. they don't emote a lot bc they're constantly keeping the urge in check so they just assume durge is as stoic on the inside as they are on the outside. so getting in their head and seeing how much self-loathing they have just completely blindsides them. you find out the person you've been using for emotional support this whole time actually desperately needs it themselves. also i think their response just totally catches everyone off guard. like they have 6 people telling them "we think you're a good person" and they're just like "no, you're wrong." and then proceeds to get angry about it which is like. what do you do with that? durge is so convinced in their own badness that nothing can sway them otherwise which is like. trying to argue with a brick wall.

they are trying their best!! they care abt each other so much but no one taught them emotional regulation or healthy coping mechanisms so they're just throwing darts at the wall and hoping they don't accidentally poke someone's eye out

so i liked the ending a lot, just hated how it was executed. there was so much wasted potential there and im not mad because i know it wasn't just lazy sloppy writing, wakui was on a time limit with shonen jump apparently and had to rush it so i 100% get it and im not mad because of that

but it is a little disappointing having hearing all these cool theories about hanma and the haitanis and the whole reaper and pierriot shit with shuji and sanzu. it was such a good fucking theory and it almost feels canon. i felt like those theories set the bar so high for me so for the ending to be that simple instead lowkey just ruined it for me

i also hate how shuji did all that cuz he was 'bored' like its funny and stuff but i hope he had a bigger role and still hope he does. like i still dont beleieve he had no set purpose in the story aside from just comic relif yk? he was so shady and it wouldve made so much sense if he was the leaper, and even if he wasnt a leaper, he could've still had a role in it

and i hate how the side characters are so cool yet we dont know shit about them. especially the haitanis and kakucho. the most we know about them is so short and brief statements and i feel like there is no canon them. its all fanon versions we all created using small statements and facts from their sheets to create a version of them inside our heads

like before the character sheet, the way we viewed ran was WAY different to how he actually is, just a lazy ass mf that sleeps all day lmfao

and though i hate takeomi, i wanted to know more about him story wise like what was the final thing that set haruchiyo off to the point he abanonded them, changed his name and went to mikey instead. and where was he staying during all that? who was he living with? mucho? did he live alone? how did takeomi get that scar? we know now because of the recent charcater book but its not enough infomation

like if all this stuff was included in the main plot of the story, the manga wouldve been so much better and more inclusive to the side charcters

idk how to summarise it well but there's that one tumblr post abt how you shouldn't assume other ppl hate you bc it's like. an insult to them as well as yourself. and other ppl don't like being used as a tool for your own self deprecation. and idk that one just rlly stuck with me and whenever im tempted to assume other ppl hate me i always remember it and it helps me make sense of it and realise that im being irrational. like even if you're not doing it intentionally, when you believe that someone secretly hates you you're basically putting them in the role of a villain or a bully inside your head and nobody wants to be seen that way, nobody wants someone to use them as a tool for self flagellation. it took me a long time to understand this one bc i genuinely believed that i was just thinking rationally when i assumed ppl hated me, but once i realised that that way of thinking wasn't constructive it led to a huge improvement in my mental health and i think it's helped a lot with my social skills as well bc im not as much of a downer to be around yknow?

also just in general the realisation that hating yourself benefits nobody was just rlly helpful for my mental health. and realising that some ppl are gonna dislike you no matter what and that that's not a reflection of your worth as a person. basically just learning to give less of a fuck abt what other ppl think/what you assume they think bc life is too short to not be myself/enjoy being me rlly helped
