Week 9: Day in the Life at Sogang University (Seoul, South Korea)
Midterm exam season is officially over at Sogang and our 6 day break (also known as Korea's golden week) has started! Many students are either going on vacation or returning to their hometowns starting today, but I have nothing planned, so I'll try to take the free time to explore Seoul a bit more.
I had one exam and six projects/essays/presentations, all of which (hopefully) went well. I think this is unusual for most students at Sogang, since the majority of my friends had multiple exams. Most of my classes are in the "Arts and Technology" department, which seems to place more emphasis on applied learning rather than traditional exams. As someone who much prefers projects to tests, I was relieved!
Since last week was midterms week, we didn't have any regular classes. This week, classes started back up, so I'll go over a typical "day in the life" at Sogang!
On Mondays (one of my "busiest" days of the week), I wake up at around 9:30 AM for my 10:30 "Human Computer Interaction" course. After getting ready, I head to class at around 10:15. Even though the building is only a 5 minute walk away from the dorms, the elevators can be crowded and take a long time on weekday mornings, and Sogang classes are very strict on attendance (as mentioned in an earlier blog post).
The class is lecture based, so I just sit there and listen to the professor until the bell rings 11:45 am. He's not strict about laptop usage, and the course has no exams, so literally everyone in the class has their laptops open doing other things in the middle of the lecture, which I find funny.
When class is over, I usually either buy a sandwich and drink at GS25 (~$5) or eat lunch at "Gimgane", a restaurant right in front of the dorms with cheap and reliable Korean meals that taste home cooked. I almost always order vegetable bibimbap with tteokkochi (rice cake skewers). In total, it only costs around $7. If I'm not feeling lazy, I might walk ~20 mins to a restaurant near campus instead, such as "Sound Kitchen" (for healthy food like poke bowls, salad and hummus, etc.) or Soo (Japanese curry).

Meal at Soundkitchen (left), meal at Soo (right).
There isn't much time between lunch and my next class, so I usually just go back to my dorm in between. My next course, "K-Culture and Media", is 3 hours long, but very fun and low effort. Usually, we watch a K-drama for at least an hour and a half, and discuss it and its relation to Korean culture for the rest of the class period.

Afterwards, I usually head back to my dorm or to a nearby cafe to get some work done, and then get dinner with a friend around 7:30 PM. We usually eat around Sinchon station (near Yonsei University), near Ewha Women's University station, or near Daeheung station (all of which are only about a 15-20 minute walk from the dorms). Of course, getting dessert after dinner is a must, and trying out different dessert places and cafes in Korea has really been the highlight of my time here.

Two cafes near Sogang.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, HUG (Hands up for Gathering) hosts events for exchange and Korean students to meet, which I occasionally participate in and have always been fun.

Weekdays are never very eventful, but on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when I only have one class, I enjoy either taking a 30 minute walk to Hongdae or the 30 minute train ride to Itaewon for lunch and to explore. Just randomly walking around has also led to me meeting random celebrities/K-pop groups.

Thank you for reading this far and I'll see you next week!

Date: 2020
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea

2021 (57th) BaekSang Arts Awards - May 13, 2021
Best New Actress (Park Ju-Hyun)
I hadn’t watched such a suffocating series in a long time. It’s incredibly oppressive, giving you the feeling of being trapped inside a coffin. I honestly couldn't understand why someone would feel compelled to write this, why another would want to direct it, and why others would even give it awards.
At first glance, if you squint a little, you might catch a glimpse of a small Walter White, but let me point out — that would be an illusion. I had to restrain myself very hard from having a nervous breakdown while watching. Oh Ji-Soo (Kim Dong-Hee), a high school student abandoned by his parents, struggles to survive by juggling school and finding ways to earn money. His circumstances push him toward crime. He justifies himself by thinking he’s making an existing crime “safer.”
Underage girls work as escorts to earn money. Ji-Soo is the one ensuring their safety: he finds reliable clients and provides a panic button through the bracelets the girls wear, instantly sending help if needed.
Through the system he’s set up, the girls don’t know who he is — not his age, not where he is, not what he looks like, not even his voice. Similarly, Lee Wang-Chul (Choi Min-Soo), a.k.a. Mr. Lee, the tough guy who ensures their protection, also doesn’t know who’s employing him. The girls receive the meeting address and details, and Mr. Lee receives information about which girl to protect and where. After the job is done, everyone gets their share.
At school, Ji-Soo appears to be a quiet, unremarkable student, but his grades are above average. He secretly has a crush on a rich, popular classmate but only admires her from afar. Our rich girl, Bae Gyu-Ri (Park Ju-Hyun), is tightly controlled by her mother, who has mapped out her future to take over corporate responsibilities. Our girl, to put it bluntly, is a complete brat. Because she already has everything, she’s bored. She sets her sights on Ji-Soo. Not only does she set her sights, but out of curiosity and arrogance, she steals the second phone Ji-Soo uses for his side business.
From that moment on, everything spirals downhill, and as a viewer, you feel yourself breaking out in hives and tearing your hair out. If you ask me when I last felt so suffocated by a piece of media, honestly, it was about twenty years ago with "Requiem for a Dream." That movie has always been my benchmark for overwhelming darkness. But this series definitely competes with it — no doubt about it.
As for the characters: they were all completely hollow. Truly hollow — characters without any real backstory. Of course, without a foundation, you can’t have character development. The rich girl was wrecking someone’s life just because she was bored.
The only character I liked was Lee Wang-Chul, played by Choi Min-Soo. Actually, there are many familiar and talented actors in the series, but none of them could save it. We know Kim Dong-Hee from "Itaewon Class." I liked his performance; he portrayed the transition between innocence, desperation, and cruelty very well. Park Ju-Hyun, known from "Love All Play," was an actress I liked in that show — but here, because of her character, I can’t even bring myself to say I liked her.
This was definitely a show I would not recommend; it was an utter waste of time.

"they say life is full of paradox / all you gott do is gettin' used to this marathon" WINTER FLOWER - younha ft. rm
the day his mother's broke the news that one of his grandmother's was sick, and they were moving to south korea was a day hyunki could never forget. he was only 12 when they sat himself, his twin brother, and their little sister down to explain. up until that point, they all had lived peacefully together in los angeles, one mom was creating and selling art while the other taught. they were all so settled in their neighborhood, their schools.
it didn't take hyunki long to figure out that who he was in california was not going to be the same person he presented himself to be in south korea. his korean was okay, his eomma had taught all of them since birth, with their other mom being in charge of the english. the amount of korean used around the house had increased greatly since the news a month prior. still, when he stepped into elementary school (after having started middle school already in the states) that day, with not many kids willing to speak to him or sungki. they were pushed behind a year, the school claiming it would give them time to learn the language better and play catch up with other students easier than going back into middle school.
it was so different than at home where they both had large groups of friends that intertwined and they spent all their free time with. it took weeks to really settle at the school, for those who sat around them in class to open up to them, give them a chance. some of them thought it was cool they were from california and could speak english.
everyone here was more close-minded, at least that was hyunki's opinion. a few weeks after having moved, they were in a toy store when hyunki had picked up a doll and told his mother's as he had so many times before how pretty the doll was, fingers running over its face and hair with a content smile. there was another set of parents in the aisle, who he remembered giving him a strange look before whispering between themselves. it had confused him until that night both his parents had to explain that while they lived in a very foreign friendly neighborhood in itaewon, things were different. it was his first real understanding that he was somehow very different than the other boys his age, even his own brother.
while jang hyunki was always noted as the foreign kid from california, he did settle nicely. the language barrier dropped as he began to use korean more and english less, and eventually he found a balance of what was socially acceptable here and what needed to be toned down in order for him to be safe. the move was jarring, to say the least, and not one he had expected. while this country was his eomma's home land, it didn't support the lives they had lived in america. they all had to adjust rapidly.
this was his new life, and he would just have to figure out the new normal along the way.

Week 6: Language Barriers and Cherry Blossom Season at Sogang University (Seoul, South Korea)
CHERRY BLOSSOMS
Cherry blossom season has officially started in Seoul, although it was pushed back a few days due to the recent cold temperatures. Throughout the month of April, spring festivals will be held across Seoul (and Korea in general). My friend and I decided to attend one of these called the "Seoul Garden Festa" last weekend in Seoul Forest.
It was my first time visiting Seoul Forest, and given the name, I had expected it to be more of a forest and less of a park. However, my assumption was incorrect. The park was huge and well maintained, with many different flowering plants and trees lining its streets. The cherry blossoms were beautiful, but, unsurprisingly, it was extremely crowded!
The "Seoul Garden Festa" popup event had food trucks, popup stores (selling food, plants, gardening supplies, art, and more), as well as arts and crafts for kids. It was a fun way to spend a Sunday and memorable as my first cherry blossom viewing.

On another note, one of the classes that I'm taking this semester in Sogang's Arts and Technology department, called "Intro to Creative Computing" gave us an assignment to design an interactive website featuring "thousands of X", or, in other terms, thousands of small particles. Of course, I decided (along with many others in the class) to create a website with the concept of falling cherry blossoms. Here are some screenshots from the application I created!

LANGUAGE BARRIERS
I came to Seoul only knowing a very base level of Korean (in other words, I only know the most basic phrases and words repeated frequently in Korean media) and without a plan to take Korean classes during my time here. Despite being told beforehand that most South Koreans can speak English, I wasn't expecting for everyone to know my language when I'm the foreigner in their country. So, getting around has been a bit difficult, but not impossible. Most younger Koreans seem to have at least some level of English proficiency, and many workers at trendy cafes or restaurants are actually very fluent. If you're in an area with a lot of foreigners (say, around a university, or in an international district like Itaewon), it's even more likely that people will be able to speak English. If they can't, I use Google Translate to communicate.
Generally, Korean students and international students who are not fluent in Korean tend to hang out in separate circles. I feel that having at least a conversational level of Korean would make it easier to connect and communicate with other Korean students, even if they're able to speak English. This is another reason I recommend joining HUG's (Hands Up for Gathering) activities as mentioned in last week's blog, since the Korean members of the club are specifically looking to either make foreign friends or to practice/improve their English skills. Of course, there are exceptions to this!
For anyone considering this program but worried about the difficulties they may face due to not speaking or studying Korean, I would highly encourage you to still participate! These challenges are a good way to further develop your problem solving skills and allow you to become more independent.
