What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

"Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody."
Throughout The Catcher In The Rye, Holden reaches out to a fair number of people for company during his few days in New York. Even those he considers phony. None of them seem to really understand him. It's funny because despite his emotional isolation, he imposes on himself with this quote his actions throughout the book imply that he just wants somebody to emotionally connect to. That's what makes the line so heartbreaking, because despite how much he tried throughout the book and how hopeful he seemed near the end with phoebe, this still implies that he believes that being open to others will just lead to more emotional pain.
Although I'd love to hear any of your opinions as well. I'm making a Catcher in the Rye zine and analyzing the book to hell and back!
