My media this week (18-24 Feb 2024)
Tumblr media
i'll always prefer the og but this iteration is entertaining
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😍 The Old Codgers Greatest Hits Album (AggressiveWhenStartled, author; quietnight, narrator) - 57K series, canon-divergent stucky co-starring peter parker. Reread of this hilarious forever fave where first teenage peter is forced to deal with two body-swapped geriatric supersoldiers and then bucky is forced to deal with two teenage spidermen trying (and failing) to stealthily rescue their "dog". Great podfic by quietnight, absolute hilarity
🥰 History of American Capitalism (Zenaidamacrouras1) - 85K, shrinkyclinks college AU with superstar QB!Bucky & history nerd Steve - incredible found family dynamics, can't believe @zenaidamacrouras1 made me actually really get into an AU that involved both undergrads AND football. The nerve! The talent! (the fic is single POV but there's an amazing companion piece that's Bucky's convos with this sister that give a his POV on some of it and it's equally amazing)
💖💖 +347K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Half sleep, half waking (softestpunk) - The Sandman & Rivers of London crossover: dreamling, 8K - amazing crossover! I wish there was 60K of this for me to read
Road to Joy (Oddree13) - Stranger Things: steddie, 25K - latest chapter in this omegaverse steddie series that I absolutely adore
Knit One, Purl Two (mollus) - MCU: stucky, 32K - reread; forever fave WS recovery fic with lots of softness in the form of: knitting, dancing, soap making and senior citizens
Red, White & Royal Goose (fairestfaerie) - RWRB: alex/henry, 7K - I just love a good Soulmate Goose of Enforcement fic
This Sunlit Land (eyres) - MCU: stucky, 38K - wonderful canon/timeline-divergent WS recovery AU

On the evening of August 11, 2017, more than 200 members of white supremacist, alt-right, neo-Nazi, and pro-Confederate groups from throughout the country converged on the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for a torch-lit march through central campus shouting slogans like “Blood and soil!” “You will not replace us!” “Jews will not replace us!” and “White lives matter!” The procession was the precursor to a planned “Unite the Right” rally scheduled to take place the next day to protest the Charlottesville City Council’s recent vote to remove a Confederate monument dedicated to Robert E. Lee. As the marchers paraded through the University’s campus, counter-protests quickly emerged and tensions escalated.
The next day, the rally began to form in recently renamed Emancipation Park, where the Lee statue stood. White nationalist rally-goers, many heavily armed, filed into the park amid the outcry of a diverse gathering of counter-protesters. Those opposing the white nationalists included members of anti-fascist groups, Black Lives Matter supporters, local residents, church congregations, and civil rights leaders. In the absence of police intervention, clashes between rally-goers and counter-protesters became more volatile and eventually led law enforcement to declare the rally an unlawful assembly.
As rally-goers and counter-protesters dispersed, sporadic clashes continued. Approximately two hours after the City of Charlottesville declared a local state of emergency, a neo-Nazi named James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car directly into a crowd of counter-protesters, wounding at least 18 people and killing a 32-year-old white woman named Heather Heyer.
The events in Charlottesville, Virginia, sparked national press coverage and debate regarding race, white supremacy, and Confederate iconography.

Last-Minute NASCAR Cup Playoff Predictions (No visual grid, sorry)
Tumblr media
Round of 16 Exits:
Harrison Burton (I'm sorry, but... duh!)
Daniel Suárez (At least my second-favorite Trackhouse driver got in)
Austin Cindric (Penske playoff magic isn't unlimited)
Joey Logano (Please tell me reality sets in for both the Steelers of NASCAR and football this fall!)
Round of 12 Exits:
Alex Bowman (Making it this far would honestly be miraculous considering the dumb off-field distractions)
Martin Truex Jr. (I don't even really care about the title. Just please racing gods, let this legend go out with just one more win after the hell you've put him through these past 14 months!)
Chase Briscoe (SHR's final ride has almost certainly already peaked, but I still can't wait to see Briscoe in the 19 - as long as James Small doesn't waste his prime like he wasted MTJ's twilight)
Ty Gibbs (This last cut was tough, but I think his sneakily solid sophomore season goes no further, unless he can come close to a win anyway.)
Round of 8 Exits:
Denny Hamlin (I was initially on the fence between "It's his time" and "He'll choke again", but that brutal penalty could really be the dagger by this round)
Chase Elliott (Consistency should yield championships, but it unfortunately doesn't in modern NASCAR, so he may fall behind the other win-worthy drivers.)
Brad Keselowski (Maybe I'm high-balling him, but I think Brad has enough recent playoff energy left in him to carry RFK this far, but not any farther.)
Ryan Blaney (VERY close between him and Byron, but while Blaney is coming into these playoffs better than his championship year, I just get the feeling Hendrick will turn it up again and get Byron back to Phoenix. I saw someone call this the modern version of Jummie and Knaus's formula for the Chase, and I think they've got a point.)
Championship 4 and why they could win:
Kyle Larson - Even if this isn't his best season, it feels like a true banner year for Larson as a racecar driver, and with him being just one point away from the Regular Season title even after getting washed away from the most valuable race of the year, he could have a good case to win his second Bill France Cup. (Heck, it looked like he would seal it last year off another clutch pit stop, but unlike in '21, he wouldn't hold on during the final restart.)
William Byron - As said earlier, Byron may be catching onto the same formula the 48 team made a dynasty out of, and even if his championship-caliber season last year didn't end on a high note, his past success at Phoenix could be enough to put the legendary 24 car in championship lane for the first time in 23 years.
Tyler Reddick - Moving onto my two real championship contenders, Reddick made a heck of a late charge to win the Regular Season title on fumes (albiet with a little help from Mother Nature in Indy), and being arguably the best driver in Cup this year, he should be able to get over the hump and get 23XI to not just its first Championship 4 berth, but perhaps the first championship ring of any kind in decades for both of its very differently decorated owners. (Maybe its last Final 4 berth though considering this charter drama that I already lost track of like four months ago.)
Christopher Bell - Chalk it up all you want to bias for who will, after a certain retirement, soon become my second-favorite driver, but not only has Bell been insanely clutch in the playoffs as of late (he's damn near NASCAR's Mr. October at this point), but if the October Bell indeed rings all the way to Phoenix, he'll be in his paradise of the kind of flat tracks he's been so good at. (Legit, he may be the only person in the world who isn't a NASCAR executive that wants Phoenix to stay as the championship track, even if he's had championship success at Homestead in lower divisions.) Yeah, he lost his first two Final 4 berths, but those were respectively due to an OP Logano car and his tire becoming a nuke just as the race got going. Considering how he's already had his best season so far, he may have just enough to secure the 20 team (and in fact any JGR ride not driven by Kyle Busch) their first Cup title in nearly two decades. (It'd be especially since SHR's closing may mean the end of the last #20 car champion's 26-year involvement in NASCAR, as if Smoke really seems to care about that.)
And my pick for 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Champion is...
Christopher Bell! (Reddick was really close, but the Phoenix factor could be the difference. No, I'm just high on hopium after one of my two favorites collapses out of a playoff spot and the other is on pace to easily the saddest final season and a half of any Hall-of-Famer (present or future) that didn't die on the track.)
Now watch as these age like milk and the Wood Brothers win their first(?) ever Cup with a driver they issued a pink slip to months ago! 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

HER PAST In 1982, when James Sr. was stationed in Lebanon during a peacekeeping tour with the US Marines, he met his wife Sana who was a local working as a translator for the Marines. The two often worked together and quickly fell in love, and when his deployment came to an end, he promised to return to Lebanon for her so they could be married. In 1984, he returns to Lebanon and much to the displeasure of her religious parents, Sana leaves with James and they elope. Bringing her back to the states, he is stationed in Jacksonville, North Carolina where Sana persues further education and later gives birth to their firstborn son, James. Jr. in 1888. In 1990, after being restationed in Yuma, Arizona they have their second child and first daughter, Beaumont.
Beau spent her first years of life moving from one place to another and was often withdrawn as a child. Prefering to be alone than playing with her brother and younger siblings. From an early age her parents noted that she had a greater interest in knowledge and reading, being more idept in Arabic than the rest of her siblings. In her teen years, with newer gained confidence, she sought higher education with hopes to attend university in Hawaii where her family was stationed at the time, receiving a handsome scholarship from the school of her choice. But an old colleague of her father, Scott Hardy, encouraged her to join the Marines and follow in her mother's footsteps as a trained translator, later becoming a negotiations specialist who was known for being level-headed and quick witted.
Feeling unfilled with her career choice, Beau left the Marines at the age of 22 to return to academics. But received attention from Kate Laswell after narrowly saving a whole Marine Corp Squard from bombing with her quick ability to process intel. Laswell, determined to recruit Beau under her, offers her a position that'll allow Beau to attend university in Washington, DC while working for the CIA as a linguistic and intel analyst.
After a few years of office works and receiving her degree through excelurated work, Beau accepts a field assignment to work in her mother's homeland of Lebanon. Stationed there, she spends time reconnecting with her heritage whilst helping filter through intel for all of the middle east. During her time in Lebanon is when Beau first meets Alex Keller during his time in SAD. And though there is an instant spark, the two are off and on, never having the avaliabity and emotional energy to commit to a full-term relationship.
Beau is referred by Laswell to a new field assignment to work alongside the US Marines and International Corp in Urzikstan as tense begins to arise between forces. (Where MWII starts up) During her time in Urzikstan, her relationship with Keller becomes more serious in the threat of terror and her specialty and skills catch the eye of Captain John Price who tries to recruit her as a support member of TF141. Hoping it'll give her a chance to return and finish her work in Urzikstan along with letting her be with Keller, Beau accepts the position and begins working alongside TF141.

Kansas City Royals-Minnesota Twins Series Preview
5.27.24- Alec Marsh RHP (4-1) 2.72 ERA Vs. Joe Ryan RHP (3-3) 3.15 ERA
5.28.24-Cole Ragans LHP (4-3) 3.34 ERA Vs. Simeon Woods Richardson RHP (1-0) 2.57 ERA
5.29.24-Seth Lugo RHP (8-1) 1.74 ERA Vs. Bailey Ober RHP (5-2) 4.33 ERA
5.30.24-Brady Singer RHP (4-2) 2.63 ERA Vs. Chris Paddack RHP (4-2) 4.39 ERA
The Royals At A Glance- The Royals have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball so far. They just had an eight-game winning streak snapepd and are (34-20). The Royals sit just 2.5 games behind the Indians for first place in the American League Central. Salvador Perez is having a solid season with a .325 average, nine homers, and thirty-nine RBI. Bobby Witt Jr. continues to be a solid young face with nine homers, thirty-six RBI, and sixteen stole bases. Vinnie Pasquantino has been slumping a bit with a .225 average and just five homers. The Royals starting rotation owns a 2.97 ERA, which is third-best in the big leagues. Seth Lugo has been incredible with just a 1.74 ERA and eight wins. Brady Singer has finally found his form and Alec Marsh has been good as well. The bullpen hasn't been the greatest with a 3.96 ERA, which is eighteenth-best in baseball. James McArthur has saved eleven games with a 3.80 ERA. Will Smith has had a rough start to the season with a 7.16 ERA in 16 1/3 innings. John Schreiber has been a good arm with just five runs allowed over 23 1/3 innings of work.
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins had a four-game winning streak halted by the Texas Rangers on Sunday. They continue the homestand with four games against a surprising Royals team. Alex Kirilloff has been on fire late with a .364 average, two homers and four RBI over his past four games. Carlos Correa is hitting .333 over the past week. Eddie Julien has been ice cold with one hit in his last twenty-seven at-bats. Royce Lewis is working his way back on a rehab assignment with the Saints and the team will have an interesting roster decision to make. Jose Miranda is hitting and Eddie Julien isn't. The starting pitching had been going better until Pablo Lopez rough outing on Sunday. Josh Staumont has thrown 7 1/3 shutout innings since his call-up. He'll play his former team this weekend.
What To Watch For- The Twins took two of three from the Royals to open the season. The Twins were (6-1) against the Royals at Target Field last year. Alec Marsh threw five innings and allowed three runs in his lone start against the Twins. Joe Ryan is (5-0) with a 1.52 ERA in seven starts against the Royals. Cole Ragans has allowed three runs over ten innings against the Twins. Simeon Woods Richardson has never faced the Royals. Seth Lugo has a 1.80 career ERA in twenty innings versus the Twins. Bailey Ober has a 7.24 ERA in eight games against the Royals and has his worst career start on March 31st against them. Brady Singer is (3-6) with a 5.18 ERA in twelve starts against the Twins. Byron Buxton and Max Kepler each have two homers off Singer in their careers. Chris Paddack gave up two runs over five innings in his lone start against the Royals. This is a key early-season series against teams vying for the top spot in the division.

Devil's Sanctuary: An Eyewitness History of Mississippi Hate Crimes by Alex A. Alston, Jr., James L. Dickerson
Mississippi State history mixes with the authors' personal memories in this vivid, often shocking look at the state's legacy of racism. Focusing on several of the most notorious racial incidents of the 1950s and '60s, including the violent opposition to the integration of the University of Mississippi; the murder of Mississippi's first NAACP field secretary, Medgar Evers; and the murders of civil rights activists Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney, the book examines the complicity—and, just as often, outright support and collaboration—of the state's media, legal system and clergy in upholding a racial system that the authors persuasively refer to as “state-sponsored terror.”
Alston Jr., a former president of the Mississippi Bar Association, and Dickerson (Goin' Back to Memphis ) describe the activities of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, a quasi-independent spy agency created in 1956 to monitor and intimidate supporters of civil rights and to “protect” Mississippi against integration efforts by the federal government. This is a thoroughly absorbing overview of Mississippi's racist past
