you read ML research (e.g. arxiv, state of ai, various summaries), you find an overwhelming blizzard of new techniques, clever new applications and combinations of existing techniques, new benchmarks to refine this or that limitation, relentless jumps in capabilities that seem unstoppable (e.g. AI video generation took off way faster than I ever anticipated). at some point you start to see how Károly Zsolnai-Fehér became such a parody of himself!
you read ed zitron & similar writers and you hear about an incomprehensibly unprofitable industry, an obscene last-gasp con from a cancerous, self-cannibalising tech sector that seems poised to take the rest of the system down with it once the investors realise nobody actually cares to pay for AI anything like what it costs to run. and you think, while perhaps he presents the most negative possible read on what the models are capable of, it's hard to disagree with his analysis of the economics.
you read lesswrong & cousins, and everyone's talking about shoggoths wearing masks and the proper interpretation of next-token-prediction as they probe the LLMs for deceptive behaviour with an atmosphere of paranoid but fascinated fervour. or else compile poetic writing with a mystic air as they celebrate a new form of linguistic life. and sooner or later someone will casually say something really offputting about eugenics. they have fiercely latched onto playing with the new AI models, and some users seem to have better models than most of how they do what they do. but their whole deal from day 1 was conjuring wild fantasies about AI gods taking over the world (written in Java of course) and telling you how rational they are for worrying about this. so... y'know.
you talk to an actual LLM and it produces a surprisingly sharp, playful and erudite conversation about philosophy of mind and an equally surprising ability to carry out specific programming tasks and pull up deep cuts, but you have to be constantly on guard against the inherent tendency to bullshit, to keep in mind what the LLM can't do and learn how to elicit the type of response you want and clean up its output. is it worth the trouble? what costs should be borne to see such a brilliant toy, an art piece that mirrors a slice of the human mind?
you think about the news from a few months ago where israel claimed to be using an AI model to select palestinians in gaza to kill with missiles and drones. an obscene form of statswashing, but they'd probably kill about the same number of people, equally at random, regardless. probably more of that to come. the joke of all the 'constitutional AI', 'helpful harmless assistant' stuff is that the same techniques would work equally well to make the model be anything you want. that twat elon musk already made a racist LLM.
one day the present AI summer and corresponding panics will burn out, and all this noise will cohere into a clear picture of what these new ML techniques are actually good for and what they aren't. we'll have a pile of trained models, probably some work on making them smaller and more efficient to run, and our culture will have absorbed their existence and figured out a suitable set of narratives and habits around using them in this or that context. but i'm damned if I know how it will look by then, and what we'll be left with after the bubble.
if i'm gonna spend all this time reading shit on my computer i should get back to umineko lmao

some more thoughts on random pepper ann episodes if you even care:
Tumblr media
nicky gone bad- i watched this episode during my binge watch over the summer, it's honestly the reason nicky is one of my favorite characters. watching it again, i think what makes it really sad is that all of this persona comes from nicky's feelings on how she is percieved but also focuses on her academic pressures. i really like how pepper ann's whole "this isn't you!" thing is often flawed and drawn out. and the sort of internal conflict of nicky and her one track mind was interesting
a tween halloween- i love this episode a lot because it's about growing out of halloween and the characters' conflict about it. pepper ann wanting to protect milo from embarassing himself was funny and interesting, and the fact that ALL the characters who said they didnt want to do halloween ended up doing it anyway. pepper ann's reaction to milo being "normal" was so funny as well. nicky's costume being the least obvious like my poor baby...
an otterbiography- 1. pepper ann is a furry 2. i found this episode very interesting from all the characters' perspectives. it's interesting how this opened with nicky joining the hockey team and how both friends have different perspectives on the situation. what i find interesting is nicky getting distracted being the thing starting the conflict of the episode, showing her fear of being watched sorta impacting her. i mean she didn't know her friends were gonna cheer her on?? nicky has the ability to succeed in athletics probably as much as becky but her performance is affected by her thoughts tbh.then later in the episode she seems very excited at the idea to wear a costume and be anonymous tbh. in some ways i think she was so glad the attention was on the mascot and not on her. also milo straight up telling craig "nicky likes you" was vile (and arguably i think she put him on a pedestal/projected onto/had traits she was straight up just fond of tbh. same with stewart. like i dont see it as ignoring the text her crushes/relationships feel the least real to me.)
greensleeves- this episode is so interesting to me. nicky's perspective on preforming i think of a lot. so when she was preforming at the java nut she was comfortable and her reasoning for preforming in a larger venue just makes me so sad. cause does it really come from insecurity? or does it come from her parents? the answer is obvious "ive been training to preform there since i was prenatal" uhhh and thats NOT NORMAL. and remember nicky is the youngest. so perhaps this was a goal she was working towards for the longest time. and her playing the song for pepper ann felt like a passive aggressive thing too towards the people who let this happen. she knew the people came there to see pepper ann play a different song. pepper ann was never forced to be a violin prodigy by her upbringing anyway they all get this. malicious compliance

Where to start. Sweep of September air from the door. Blinking cursor. What are you taking this semester? he asks. Sustainable sourcing, fair trade, organic. Java, mocha. Enamel on wood panel, 12 x 12 inches. From Kenya and Sumatra. Welcome to Fox Point. Perhaps the coffee will be just as good as the last time. She looks down at the half-eaten miniature Boston cream donut on the fluted baking paper. French 2. What is Enlightenment. Digital Media in the Time of Ecological Crisis. Regular milk? Regular milk. And Bakhtin and the Political Present. Flyers litter the bulletin board. Where to start. There is a wide range of freshly roasted single origin beans. And the coffee is made in a wide variety of ways. And the interior is warm and eclectic. There is ample seating and there are large windows and there are rounded grooves in the scuffed wall paneling. There are racks of magazines, and frosted glass pendant lamps in yellow and blue. It’s a relaxing atmosphere. Hiss of the steamer. Paper cups with dimpled brown sleeves. Stretched burlap in the window. The steam rises steadily. Where to sit. Waste of time. Write what you know. Listen, the coffee is organic and it taste very good. It is pure and hot and strong. It can always stand alongside friendship. Song from the sixties: refrain, elegy, churchyard, string quartet. Panned hard left and right. Simple, separate people. He writes on Twitter: Does anyone else feel like a ghost? I have had the privilege of trying the finest cafés in Korea, Japan, and all around Asia, but I’d say Coffee Exchange would be the best as far as Lattes are concerned. And honestly this is one of my favorite coffee shops, due to the quality and the variety. Ideal for a date, perfect for studying or working, and superb for simply enjoying your cup of coffee. No one would be disappointed. The hardest part is getting to the starting point, he says. I finished training last week. My first day is Monday. It’s one block of Williams, on the south side. Four more streets below that, between Benefit and Governor—John, Arnold, Transit, and Sheldon. From John to Sheldon it’s Thayer, Brook, Hope, and East, and all those tiny streets in between, names I can’t remember. It might seem impossible to learn your route at first but the jump in your knowledge from the first time to the second will be dramatic. That’s what I’ve generally found to be true for people. Close the laptop. Sakura means cherry blossom, smile, open mouth. The summer was long. I was away for six weeks, she says. Six weeks? I would read in the mornings. I would write long letters. I would wander, disquieted, along the avenues, under the linden trees. 3 bedroom, 1 full bath apartment on the second floor of a mixed-use building on Wickenden Street. Large open kitchen with granite counter top, spacious bedrooms, modern full bath, central air and in-unit laundry. Unruhig. Restlessly? But I have been sleeping well. Or I’ve been sleeping late. As the days get shorter it becomes easier to fall in love with shadows. Stirring in raw sugar, one packet. Oh, such a good book, he says. What did you think? The main thing is that everything happens at the right time. And that is grace. That is providence. The twentieth remove: here was mercy on both hands. Here was the benevolence of friends. Do you see a thousand little Motes and Atomes wand’ring up and down in a Sun-beam? That is preservation, and that is government. And in these providence consists. Such a good book. And when you start reading it, you notice little things about the city. The book club meets once a month, depending on the book. Always in person. And you notice little things, like the way the white cross on the church aligns with the windowpane and is split by shadow as the sun dips below the buildings. A picture held us captive, and we could not get outside of it, for it lay in our language. Where to start. Cross the room and sit by the window. Wer jetzt kein Haus hat, baut sich keines mehr. Wer jetz allein ist, wird es lange bleiben. We are served our coffees, and the steam rises steadily.

My Summer 2023 Plans: Programming, Exploration, and Personal Growth
Summer 2023 holds exciting prospects for me as I embark on a journey of personal and academic development. In this article, I will outline my goals and aspirations for the summer, focusing on programming, exploration, and self-improvement.
Part 1: Programming Skills Enhancement During the summer, I aim to refine my programming skills and connect them to my academic and professional goals. Here are my planned activities:
Review Java language concepts to strengthen my foundation.
Dive deeper into Java APIs, such as JavaFX, to learn graphical user interface (GUI) development.
Prepare for the upcoming semester by familiarizing myself with GUI programming techniques.
Showcase my programming prowess by uploading training projects to GitHub, fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge with fellow developers.
Part 2: Cultural Enrichment and Reading Reading is a gateway to intellectual growth, and I have set ambitious reading goals for the summer. Here's what I have in mind:
My target is to read 35 books, with a particular focus on novels that transport me to new worlds and perspectives.
I have dedicated five hours each day to immerse myself in captivating stories, expanding my horizons and broadening my understanding of diverse cultures.
To foster my creative mind, I will incorporate photography into my summer routine, even though I have yet to discover a specific passion in this art form. Through capturing images, I hope to train my eye for aesthetics and develop my creative instincts.
Part 3: Health and Well-being A holistic approach to personal growth encompasses physical well-being. Thus, I have outlined the following plans for a healthier summer:
I commit to regular workouts, engaging in exercise routines four days a week. This will enhance my fitness levels and boost my energy and focus.
Proper nutrition is a priority, and I will ensure a balanced and healthy diet to nourish my body and maintain optimal health.
As I eagerly anticipate Summer 2023, I am driven by the desire to accomplish my goals and cultivate personal growth. With my programming endeavors, literary explorations, creative pursuits, and focus on well-being, I am poised for a summer filled with learning, self-discovery, and positive transformations. Here's to an enriching and fulfilling summer ahead!

What is the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning?
Supervised learning is a type of machine learning where the model is trained on labeled data, meaning the algorithm learns from input-output pairs. Examples include classification and regression tasks. In contrast, unsupervised learning deals with unlabeled data, where the algorithm tries to find hidden patterns or groupings without predefined labels—clustering and dimensionality reduction are common examples.
Explain the bias-variance tradeoff.
The bias-variance tradeoff is a fundamental concept in machine learning. Bias refers to errors due to incorrect assumptions in the learning algorithm, often leading to underfitting. Variance refers to errors due to sensitivity to small fluctuations in the training set, often leading to overfitting. The goal is to find a balance between bias and variance to minimize total error and improve model generalization.

A variation from When Love Arrives
Back in 2003, I was a scrawny kid in Bondowoso, fifteen, and I thought love was her—W, the girl who ruled the high school academic war. Ska was everywhere, Tipe-X’s Genit blaring from my battered cassette player. She wore a long skirt, always had the same bob haircut, and smiled like a rainy dawn—cold and calm. She never liked ska. Her brilliant mind shut down the most arrogant kids in our class.
Love was her getting embarrassed over a perfect math score, walking alone on the pavement after class. I’d spot her while she waited for her dad. Her tough face was a little intimidating, and I swore—if I could just borrow my brother’s motorbike, catch up to her, and drive her home, I’d be the happiest kid in town. I never did. Love sped off, ska faded, and W moved to Leeds with her family.
In 2005, I landed in Jember for college, and love was different—her name was T, all edges and gloom. Linkin Park’s Numb thumped through my expensive USB headset. She was there, reading Development as Freedom by Amartya Sen on the campus stairs. Love had purple-framed glasses, wore an oversized My Chemical Romance tee, and scribbled “life sucks” on my sociology notes. She hated the heat, cursed the rich, but leaned into me on the rooftop, muttering about her dad’s gambling addiction.
When I tried to kiss her, she flinched—then laughed, dry and bitter. Love was her dragging me to a dingy café, screaming Crawling lyrics over burnt coffee. But T dropped out midterm, left a crumpled note—“Aku ikut Mama, sorry”—and love vanished into the rain.
By 2010, I was in Jogja, twenty-three, chasing a degree and something bigger. Love was D, a girl from the Communication major—soft-spoken, sharp. American Football’s The Summer Ends played on my cracked laptop, and she’d hum along, barefoot, sipping artisan tea from a Snoopy mug. She wore a faded kebaya, smelled like jasmine and freshly picked mint. She’d sketch Malioboro in her notebook, call me Mas with a smirk, and wait with me at the Togamas bookstore, never minding the late rides.
Love was her reading my palm under a streetlamp, saying, “You’re going far.” But she stayed—married a local artist—and love slipped away like a missed train, quiet, leaving me with her last sketch.
Now it’s 2020. I’m thirty-two, in Jakarta, and love’s someone new—M, a woman I met at work. The city’s a grind, all traffic and haze, but she’s here, playlist stuck on some lo-fi cover of Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Love wears blazers over band tees, smells like espresso, cigarettes, and Dior. Her sneakers look so damn comfy.
She’s got a scar from an ex, a laugh that cuts like a horror movie, and a habit of stealing my fries at what used to be McD (fuck them now). Love’s her texting capek banget with a crying emoji—then showing up anyway, sprawled on my couch. When I lean in, she kisses back—messy, real.
Love has flaws—snaps about my clutter, having different gods to worship—but stays, tracing my hair, saying, “Kamu pinter, tau?” But then leave me after years of begging me to get help. It was too late, I was deep in therapy, but then got better. M was nowhere to find and I don't blame her.
Love shifts with every city, every girl. In Bondowoso, love danced to ska and never looked back. In Jember, love smoked and screamed, then broke. In Jogja, love was gentle, a slow fade. In Jakarta, love is loud, chaotic.
Each one’s a piece, but none fit the universal dream I had as a kabupaten kid, staring at Bondowoso’s stars, imagining love as a straight road to somewhere huge. Maybe it’s not. Maybe love is just these people, these moments, scattered across Java like Logawa routes.
Love rolls in when it wants, leaves when it must. And when love walks out, I leave the door cracked, kill the music, hear the city’s hum, and sleep alone.
