Midnight Duet is atmospheric, slightly bonkers, and full of fun, heart, & heat. If you adore musicals and theater, this will deliver in nostalgia and backstage feelings. Also, now I've discovered I definitely do have a thing for a certain German glam rock star, one Christof Daae with his long locks and tight ridiculous pants.
Tumblr media
What I appreciated the most was Erika Green though, our former Broadway darling who retreats to Paris, Nevada to recover from both the accident that left her scarred and the embarrassment of being found out to be a "bad girl diva who deserved the karma she wrought." Erika is not nice, but she is definitely honest. I was so glad that we didn't get an ableist take on "losing herself" due to facial scarring. Erika definitely worries about it RE how others will react, especially in potential partners, but it isn't what sent her running to Paris.
Tumblr media
The specter of the falling apart theater, both Erika and Christof trying to keep their livelihoods afloat, the seething passion between them as they try to keep away, I ate it up!

• what is love? •
There are few things that bring me more joy than a spicy book about nerds falling in love, and Jen Comfort has very quickly become a go-to author for this very specific category for me.
Which is to say that her newest book, What Is Love?, delighted me in all the best ways.
The premise is that uptight, Oxford-educated academic Teddy loses his trivia game show winning streak to Maxine, a high school drop-out with ADHD. Then she loses to him in a champions game. And then they have a third opportunity to play each other during another champions round with higher stakes – but because of the players they’re up against, they decide to suck up their rivalry and all the delicious tension that accompanies it to help each other prepare.
And yeah, I completely adored this. The banter is amazing, Teddy is so swoony in the nerdiest ways, and there is scene involving maps that is SCORCHING HOT.
Here’s what else you can expect:
💋rivals to lovers
✨opposite attract
😎characters in their 30s
🏡forced proximity
✏️professor x student vibes
🧠neurodivergent rep
This is genuinely such a fun read, but there’s a ton of character growth and emotional depth here, too. It’s a great balance of game-show hijinks, simmering tension, and all the seriousness life can throw at you, culminating in a love story that is deeply satisfying on every level.
4.5🌟

MIDNIGHT DUET🎶
Thanks to Montlake and NetGalley for the free review copy. Book available now.
I haven't really watched Phantom of the Opera, but when I was approached to read and review Midnight Duet, a gender swapped version, I jumped on it. A friend of mine in middle school was obsessed with the musical, so it always makes me think of her.
I'll start out by saying that I enjoyed this one overall. However, the main characters in this dual pov book (Erika and Christof) are INCREDIBLY horny and could barely be in the same room together at the beginning without wanting to rip each other's clothes off. As a sex-averse asexual, I found the frequency of sexual thoughts/actions off-putting and almost DNFed at the 18% mark. There was a semi-public masturbation-for-show scene that icked me out, but I pushed through and am glad I did because I enjoyed the overall story:  struggling ex-broadway performer inherits historical opera house (and attached brothel) in small-town Nevada and is on a mission to save it despite her family's reputation in town; German Hair Metal front man has just been dumped in the worst way and is looking for a distraction by renting out said opera house to work on the band's first album in English. The chemistry is undeniable. It was just super heavy-handed, in my opinion, but I know a lot of you like that kind of thing. Think Chloe Brown level spice.
The characters were well developed (the dual pov really helped set the story up), I absolutely adored Sybille (spelling?) the gothy/witchy bassist, and the fact the Erika had rats made me super happy (don't worry, nothing bad happens to them). It was well paced, engaging, funny, and steamy.
If you enjoy steamier and open-door romance, forbidden romance, unlikable heroines, gender-swapped stories, forced proximity, insta attraction, and/or German Hair Metal, this is the book for you.
Rating: 4 stars Spice: 🌶🌶🌶
CW: fire/fire injury, sexual content (full list on StoryGraph)

REVIEW
Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort
Musicians with chemistry, but oh so different from one another on many levels, end up finding more than they expected in Paris, Nevada.
 What I liked:
* Erika: opera star, scarred in accident, rather lost, seeking something, talented, wiser and better than she realizes, loves deeply
* Christoff: hair metal band lead singer and guitarist, German, control freak, worrier, rigid, a bit lost in some ways, a good man
* The chemistry between Erika and Christoff
* The band members: Sybelle, Sergei, Waldo…and later, Gillian
* Jean and Javert: Erika’s furry rat companion pets that
* The slow burn between the H/h
* The growth shown in both characters through the story arc
* That it reminded me a bit of Jilly Cooper books read long ago
* The way it all worked out in the end
 What I didn’t like:
* That it took me quite awhile to get into the story and begin to care about the characters – I had trouble relating to them and their life issues – though I did finally begin to care and wonder how it would all work out.
Did I enjoy this book? By the end, I did.
Would I read more by this author? I believe I would
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 3-4 Stars
     BLURB
From The Astronaut and the Star author Jen Comfort comes a wildly electric romance about two musicians who collide on the stage of a Nevada opera house. Self-professed diva Erika Greene has it all: a starring role on Broadway, legions of fans, spectacular natural talent. But after an accident on stage leaves her face scarred and her career in shambles, Erika retreats to Paris, Nevada, where she’s inherited a ramshackle opera house in desperate need of some TLC. Erika pours her savings into the building, but it’s not enough to stave off casino developer Raoul Decomte’s avaricious gaze. With foreclosure imminent, she leases the space to some unexpected tenants: a German hair metal band, fronted by glam rock god Christof Daae. Erika is tempted by Christof’s low-slung leather pants—and even more so by his ambitious drive to make Nacht Musik international superstars—but he’s off-limits. The rest of his band thinks he’s still dating their beloved keyboardist, who is conveniently not present on this jaunt to the American Southwest. When Erika finds out Christof’s been unceremoniously dumped and is trying to keep it under wraps, she makes a deal to keep his secret…for a price, of course. Christof is desperate to hold the rest of the band together after his keyboardist’s departure, but he can’t maintain the charade forever. Nor can he resist the opera house’s mysterious proprietor, who tempts him with midnight singing lessons. It isn’t long before sensuous nighttime interludes turn into smoldering backstage encounters. But can their newly ignited passion survive the searing light of day? Or will their beautiful duet turn into a brokenhearted power ballad for one?

Life Update and April 2024 Reading Recap
So. April happened.  You may have noticed I barely posted this month. This is the first time since I relaunched my blog in 2021 that I have NOT posted a single review in a month. I feel a bit guilty about that, but April was a roller coaster of a month with lots of good and bad mixed in. The Good: First, I started off the month with a visit to my family in NC for nearly two weeks. And then I…

• review: the astronaut and the star •
If there is an ultimate black cat lady x golden retriever guy book, it very well may be The Astronaut and the Star.
I absolutely *devoured* this book. When Reggie, the FMC who is an ambitious astronaut, thought, “I want to do something so legendary that no one will care I’m not likable,” I was all in. And when it’s revealed the MMC, Jon, who is an actor training to play an astronaut in a movie, “imprinted early on comic book villainesses, with their black lipstick and cunning brains, and never quite grown out of it,” I was a goner.
There’s forced proximity and stakes that are very literally out of this world and a truly hilarious cosmonaut and fantastic character growth AND! THE! BANTER!!!!!!
Oh, and the spice hits.😏
I really loved this one and will definitely be adding it to my go-to recommendations list.
