Story - summarized

Yexiao munches on candy while working on a project at a cafe. A TV commercial announces acting classes from the December Troupe as they find their lead for their newest play "Leah the Candy Witch." Nikki encourages Yexiao to audition... but what grabs her attention the most is that the cast and crew often go out for hotpot. And she would much rather design costumes and eat hotpot than perform in a play.

Nevertheless, Yexiao goes to the training classes. Whereas others show their enthusiasm for theater, she announces she just wants to make friends and eat hotpot. Whereas others find it hard to do the exercises, Yexiao finds them simple, almost meditative.

Since the character of the Candy Witch is a lonely oddball, the director picks Yexiao to be the star. She isn't sure about being onstage, but the director keeps encouraging her. So, she sets about making her costume, adding real candy to it.

On the night of the premiere, Yexiao calms her breathing and readies herself. The play begins. It explains the Candy Witch's side of Princess Jenny's story: the witch was kind yet lonely, so when Jenny and her pet lamb came through the forest, she transformed the lamb into a plushy, hoping to keep the two around longer. But when Jenny has trouble finding the treasures, Leah the Candy Witch uses magic to help her. She never wanted to hurt Jenny or the lamb; she just wanted a little fun, and maybe a friend or two.

The play is a hit. Yexiao had lots of fun playing the witch... but as soon as she gets home, she munches on her costume's candy while starting a new project.

Connections

-In the precursor Love Nikki, we first hear of the Candy Witch character in Vol. 1 Ch. 3: the actress Sofia is starring in the play Candy Witch and the Star Sea.

-Nikki starred as Jenny in "Flower and Jenny." A similar costume color-change happened there, where her white dress turned black when she collected the rose.

Fun Facts

-Mingming is a gender-neutral name. I couldn't find a meaning for "Mingming," but I did for "Ming" and it's "shining bright."

-The character Mingming in the Reflection is a trans man.

-The Candy Witch's candy house is much like the candy house in the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel." Two little kids find a cottage made of sweets, and the witch inside is wicked and mischievous - except that witch wanted to eat the kids, not be friends with them.

So, what I get is:

1. Yolanda is grounded for life, probably sent to a convent to become a nun(if you know catholic latino families you would know what I'm talking to) or sent to her aunt/grandma to get straight(not pun intended).

2. Rick is in...juvie, jail? how old is he? it is possible for him to be in a prison prison? or was that juvie. Anyway, he is in a cell and apparently eating apples from the very unhealthy floor that a undead man is throwing at him from the jail's window(also, super kinda sad that Grundy is the only one that has check on Rick yet).

3. Mike following thunderbolt that apparently is recreating hansel and gretel? why if they talked about how dangerous ins eclipso this boy go around alone.

4. Beth connecting and trying to do everything she can and holding the only braincell of this team(including the adults).

5. Courtney sent to the shadowland without cosmo and probably the only person near her is going to be Cindy.

6. jennie getting involve in a super dangerous thing around her brother to be push to deal with the big baddie of the season and got knockout. Poor child, she really needs someone that explains her how to use her powers.

GO WILD Cut Scenes

Context: So these little scenes I have to cut from chapter 39 because while fun, I found it better to start at the location of the rendezvous. Warning: Only lightly edited. First, Safra and co are wondering through town and pass through the red light district. Second, just Uvo being drunk, nosy, and kissy.

We follow the crowd near the harbor, and soon the street is illuminated in red neon.

The windows beckon my attention with dark silhouettes, supple limbs and voluptuous curves, bare skin bathed in red.

“Oh wow,” I say. “This place looks so different at night without the school children and nuns.”

The ladies weren’t winking coyly long lashes at me but the four men behind me.

“Don’t mind me," I say. "I’m fine with going back by myself if you’re looking to buy some entertainment.”

A snake hiss from behind Feitan’s high collar.

“We are thieves. We never buy.”

“There are some things you can’t steal, Feitan.”

“If it can’t be stolen we don’t need it.”

I pass a redhead with the most pellucid skin and legs like a giraffe and stare a little green-eyed. ---------------

Uvo burps and gassy Heineken sours the air. “Had a few,” he says, patting his washboard abdomen. “Enough to fill the tank.”

Meaning he's downed enough to drown a whale.

“It explains why you’re in such a giddy mood,” I say.

Again he flashes that feral smile. “The boss gave us a job and I'm excited to go to the temple.” He brandishes a six pack and I shake my head when he offers. He downs another whole can and crushes the aluminum to the size of a 500 jenni coin. “Easy job, but at least it’s something to do. You sure you don’t want any beer?”

Hansel and Gretel would be proud of the path of can-crumbs Uvo drops as we head towards the temple. The higher we go, the more cans he drops, the more his gait wobbles.

“Oh neeewbie! Doooon’t fuss! I can’t get drunk!” he says when I suggest he slow his pace. The rose red of his cheeks and neck betrays his words. Again, even as a 3 meter tall Beef Mountain, Uvo has his limits.

“Saffraaaa!” He pats my head, more like drags his broad palm up and down my crown like I’m his beloved labrador, shifting my high ponytail down to the base of my neck. “Your so purdy u no dat? U no dat? Jus wanna let u no dat.”

Strangers are staring now and the sight of me hauling his 3m frame is odd enough that they would anyway even if Uvo wasn’t so loud.

He expects an answer. “I think you’re pretty too, Uvo.”

“Was ur type?”

“Type of what?”

“U no, TYPE. Brunets, gingers, blonds?”

I thumbs-down blonds and Uvo tuts.

“I like my blonds. Lemme me guess? Danchou! Danchou is ur type.”

“Danchou is everyone’s type.”

That earns me a gutteral laugh and I don't think I've made Uvo laugh before. As I’m trying to guide him up a steep incline—why does he have to join us at the temple again?—he glances down and surprise shows on his malleable features, like he’s just now realized the reason he hasn’t face-surfed the ground is because I’m doing the heavy lifting. “I’m dyin ta no. Wat happened wit Odara? He hada soft spot for dangerous ones. Dat was his downfall. How u do him? Kaboom? Kablawie?”

“He’s...not...dead,” I say, struggling to maneuver with him around a large stalk of prickly pears.

“Ooooo! U rite. Anybody could kill a man. U’ve come so far, u no dat?” He puckers his lips and smooches a sloppy one atop my crown.

“Uvo—” I choke, when he bends to kiss me, his arm, his whole muscle dense torso weighs on my neck and spinal column and those prickly pears are gonna skewer my eyeballs —

“Yare, yare!” My savior arrives and takes the weight off me. “Sorry, Saf,” says Shalnark with an exasperated sigh. “He’s kissed everyone in the troupe. When he’s drunk.”

Uvo blows raspberries, swearing we’re being ridiculous and that he’s “not even that drunk.”

1. Juliet Landau, as Loretta King from “Ed Wood,” was the daughter of late actor Martin Landua, who also played as Bela Lugosi in the same film.

2. Sylvia Sidney played as two characters in Burton’s films: Juno (Beetlejuice) and Grandma Florence (Mars Attacks!). “Mars Attacks!” was the final film for Sylvia’s role.

3. For Helena Bonham Carter (who played as Ari), “Planet of the Apes” was her first film to work with Tim Burton. Later on, she dated Tim Burton during the collaboration.

4. Margaret Keane had been commissioned by Tim Burton - to do a portrait painting of his old girlfriend, Lisa Marie. She made a cameo appearance in the film, “Big Eyes,” while Amy Adams did the role of Margaret Keane.

5. “Frankenweenie” remake was the second film that Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder worked together since “Beetlejuice.”
