Settler colonialism has taught us that in the species hierarchy we are on top and therefore we have more power than other plant and animal species. It is this notion of hierarchy that favors white people in the racial hierarchy system and humans in the species hierarchy system. Instead of seeing unity and a shared set of power among all races and all species, we continue to place white men at the top of our systems due to settler colonialism. We also continue to separate humans from nature.

!!!SBG CHP 78 SPOILERS!!!
Don’t have much to say but here are my favourite panels
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The expressions in this chapter are everything lol. The way Jessica is looking at Ash while she’s ‘not my problem he’s an idiot’ is hilarious and Mike’s perpetual state of confusion killed me.
Taylor and Aiden really had murder on their mind in that moment too lol.
Of course there is also the second family group hug of the series.

Ben owed everything to his cousin.
Of course he also owed his aunt and uncle. But they didn't help, atleast not the way that Aiden did. His auntie and uncle paid for his therapy and allowed him to stay with them. That's all they did, nothing more, nothing less. Don't get him wrong though, he is more than grateful that they did that for him. It just didn't help him.
But then Aiden came in.
He saw that Ben wasn't enjoying the therapy sessions and one of the few times that his parents were home (why are they always away so much?) He managed to convince them to let Ben stop going to them. Then Aiden started to suggest things that would help him get a new passion (they both knew it wouldn't be the same as singing, but they had to try) Aiden introduced him to drawing, writing stories, poetry. It was amazing to find different ways to express himself without his voice. Aiden was there whenever he had a nightmare, Aiden was there to watch whatever Ben wanted. Aiden was there.
Aiden saved him. And for that Ben would always hold him high, he loved and cared for Aiden. He would give anything to make sure his cousin was happy. Ben would forever be there for Aiden, just how Aiden was there for him.
Ben tried to ignore it, but he always knew that Aiden was jealous of him. He tried to ignore it, Aiden tried to hide it so why bring it up? Ben didn't know the reason why when he was younger, but after moving in with Aiden. He now understands. Aiden's parents were never there for him. They always focused on themselves or their business. And after Ben moved in himself as well. They cared more about him then their own son. That thought made Ben's blood boil. As much as he tries to control his anger this is something that he won't hold back on.
How fucking dare they. Aiden was amazing yet they continue to put everyone but him first?! Aiden was smart, creative, cheerful. He brightens up the room whenever he enters it. He can always make people laugh. His art is beautiful and just so hypnotising. But they continue to ignore him and say that he's not good enough. How can someone be so stupid?!
It hurts Ben deeply that Aiden tried to hide his pain and ignore his jealously. Ben understood why, just like how Aiden understood his pain. He just wished that he could relieve some of his pain. But Aiden wouldn't let him do that.
That didn't matter if Aiden didn't want help because Ben will try and try and try again if it means Aiden gets the love and attention he deserves

Chapter 3: Girl Time
Word count: 1,151
Ch 1, Ch 2
“That's it? Are you sure?” Jessica, Jess as she insisted, asked me.
“Yep, that was the last one.” I told her.
I had applied to the last of the jobs that required a little more walk than the other jobs that were closer to the apartment. I couldn't let her drive me around when I was perfectly capable of walking. I took the helmet she offered me and proceeded to strap it on. It was quite the shock to learn she doesn't have a car but a motorcycle.
“Don't you think you should be applying to way more jobs?” Jess asked, raising a brow and crossing her arms at me.
“I will. Over time. This is just for today.” I smiled up at her unconvinced face.
“Mhm. Well, if you say so.” She sighed and helped me onto her bike. “How about a bite to eat before I take you home? Miguel won't be happy if I take you back on an empty stomach.”
“He won't? Why?” But Jess only shrugged and started up her bike, drowning any chance of conversation between us. I huff and quickly wrap my arms as best as I could around her pregnant belly. This is so weird.
I didn't know Jess all that much. All I knew was that she was pregnant, knew Miguel in some way, and was kind enough to help me. Between me applying to jobs and her taking me to each job, there wasn't really any time to chitchat.
The wind roared in my ears as I watched New York flash by with barely a chance to register. Whenever Jess stopped at an intersection and waited for the light to turn green, I took my time to look around. New York wasn't much different than my neck of the woods back in California, but it was still quite foreign. The cold this early into autumn was definitely new.
After what felt like forever, Jess slowed her bike and turned into a small parking lot that was surrounded by a sort of plaza of shops. Once parked, she helped me off the bike and held me steady as my legs shook. Nothing prepares you for the muscle strain put into riding a bike. Jess didn't move until I confirmed I was steady on my feet. Jess nodded and got off the bike with ease. It still surprised me just how well she was handling this pregnancy.
Gods, I hope I'm like her when I'm pregnant. I thought almost absent-mindedly. The thought had me doing a double take. I don't even have a boyfriend. Where did this talk of “when” come from?
“You coming?” Jess called. I looked up and saw she was already a few steps ahead of me. I hurried after her. We walked in silence for a bit before the need for noise weighed on my mind.
“Congrats on the pregnancy by the way.” I tell her with a smile.
“Thanks! My husband and I want to keep the gender a secret but he's hoping for a girl.” She chuckles. I chuckle with her. At least that clarified that Miguel and her weren't together. No one lives separate from their husband.
“That's great, I'm very happy for you both.” Jess smiles.
“Thank you. How about you? Any little ones back home?”
“Oh gods no! I'm only twenty-three!” Jess laughed.
“I'm kidding! I doubt you'd leave your children in a completely different state anyway.” Oh, right.
“Of course not.”
“Anyone special back home?”
“My family.”
“Anyone else?”
“My best friend, I suppose.” She stopped and placed a hand on her hip, raising an eyebrow at me. I looked at her blankly for a few moments until—
“Oh! No, no one like that. I'm happily single. Besides, a relationship is too much right now.” We continued walking.
“That so?”
“I mean, yeah. What with me moving across the country and starting school in a few weeks, I'd have zero time for any of that lovey-dovey stuff.” This made her laugh.
“You're like a miniature Miguel. Right here.” I was quick to hold open the door to the sandwich shop for her. I expected her to continue, but she stopped talking as she looked over the menu. I couldn't help but frown. What did that mean? How was I like Miguel? Because I took my schooling as a priority over love? I crossed my arms, feeling insulted.
“Have you had a New York sandwich yet?” Jess asked me, her eyes still on the menu. It was effective in getting my attention off of her earlier comment. I looked at the menu.
“I mean, a sandwich is a sandwich, right?”
“What? Oh, we've got to get you a sandwich.” It took ages considering the long line of people. I knew New York was busy, but knowing is very different from experiencing. At least the time was easy to pass while conversing with Jess. She recommended some places to visit, the best places to shop, and even gave me a couple of job recommendations. I was quick to bookmark those once she gave me the locations.
“I can take you to them after we eat, get a couple more applications under your belt.” To which I agreed despite them being closer to the apartment. I didn't want to raise suspicion.
Finally, we were next. Jess ordered our food and proceeded to pay despite my insistence I could pay my own. This was the second time someone paid for my food and refused repayment. I won't lie, I was annoyed. Of course, I wasn't going to show Jess that that would be rude. It's just difficult accepting things without giving back.
“Here you go, let me know what you think.” Jess placed my sandwich in front of me, taking me out of my thoughts. I gave her a smile and took it.
“I will.” It wasn't anything too wild, just pastrami on some rye. I looked at my sandwich, taking it in, before taking a bite. Jess watched as I savored my bite, enjoying her. What did she call it, bagels and lox? Something like that.
“Oh this is good, what do they put in these things?” I say once I've swallowed. Jess only laughs.
“Nothing like that in Beverly Hills?” I roll my eyes at the joke. I hoped she made the joke herself. Otherwise, Miguel would have told her what he told me. The very thought had me starting to feel sour.
“Hey, we have our winners.” I tell her, distracting myself.
“I'm sure you do, Hollywood.”
“Hollywood?”
“You're from L.A. aren't you?” I scoffed at her chuckle.
“Okay, I get it.” We both laugh at the ridiculousness of the nickname. I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me homesick.
“Eat up, kiddo,” She says as her mirth dies down, “we've gotta get to those shops before they close.”

Tidepool's Top Five List of Environmental Books
(personal opinion this is just a list of book recs)
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmer This book expertly blends indigenous knowledge and Western scientific methods. Highly emphasizes precocity and living with the environment instead of separating ourselves further as many Western green movements would have you believe. This book also has realistic strategies for dealing with the climate crisis other than just personal choice.
Hope for Animals and Their World by Jane Goodall Amazing conservation wins from animals that have been brought back from the brink of extinction by zoos and aquariums. Stories like the California condor and the black-footed ferret are featured prominently. This book gave me hope that there may be a solution to saving species from extinction.
We Are All Whalers by Michael Moore Focuses on threats the northern right whale and other whales face out in the ocean and the connection we all have to it as consumers. This book does not shame consumers for their choices though, but rather calls for systematic changes in the fishing and plastic industry. One of the four books that made me cry while I was reading it.
Fresh Banana Leaves by Dr. Jessica Hernandez Amazing criticisms focusing on the Western Conservation Movement and the role of displacement in the environmental movement. The editing could be a bit better, but the message that indigenous knowledge should be centered in the environmentalist movement is impact.
Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals by Alexis Pauline Gums: This book is the second in the "Emergent Strategies" anthology. While all the books are amazing this one is my favorite. The book focuses on the shared relationship between white-western colonialism and the current ways we are affecting the marine environment. She gets a few scientific facts wrong regarding marine biology, but this book is so beautifully poetic I'm willing to over look it.
