"The Showdown"
Season 9, Episode 5Â First US Airdate: October 14, 1995Â
Michaelangelo, Leonardo and Carter are transported to a far-off asteroid to participate in a fighting tournament.
The second half of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season nine kicks off with âThe Showdownâ. David Wise is credited as the writer of this adventure.Â
Todayâs show opens in Carterâs run-down workshop, where he plays a one-on-one fighting game against Michaelangelo on a desktop PC until the system crashes. He reminds Mikey that they programmed the game to incorporate every fighting move they could think of, but the reason for the malfunction remains a mystery.Â
Carter goes on to reveal to Michaelangelo another of his troubled projects. This one is an exo-suit called the Turboflex, which âincreases human strength by a factor of twentyâ. Whenever he would attempt to perform the flying crane manoeuvre while wearing the armour, it would freeze up. After learning of the abandoned invention, Michaelangelo parts ways with his new friend, returning to the sewers.Â
Moments later, Carter runs into his old rival Jet McCabe, an Angry Martial Arts Nerd who sports a long blonde ponytail, a salmon-coloured shirt and what I assume is supposed to be some kind of futuristic waistcoat? The two hammer out their backstory, as itâs revealed Carter was responsible for Jet getting booted from âthe martial arts academyâ for cheating at... something, itâs never established what. These two weenies are about to go at it when mercifully the story cuts away to the Turtles.Â
April checks in with Leo, Donnie and Raph via Turtlecom, telling them that every TV channel is now broadcasting the same signal. After turning on her set, a swirling pattern appears, immediately placing her in a trance. Assuming Dregg to be responsible, the team head for a satellite transmission station on the outskirts of town where the signal is being transmitted.Â
Having learned of the situation, Michaelangelo cuts his journey back to the Lair short, intent on informing Carter, only to find him hanging around on the street in the middle of a scuffle. After Mikey breaks up the fight Jet taunts his old nemesis for hiding behind âthose loser mutantsâ. Carter responds with the most nineties of all-put downs, telling his enemy to âget a lifeâ. (Seriously, Iâm sure people still use that to some extent, but back then it was considered the sickest of burns.) Jet declares Carter to be a âstinkinâ cowardâ, demanding he come back and fight as he rides away with Mikey on his motorbike. Nyaaah.Â
Inside the transmission station the TechnoGang relay the news to Dregg that the hypnosis broadcasts are taking effect. Outside, the Turtles and Carter look for a way in, but find no obvious way to gain entry. None of them are strong enough to barge their way through until a Group Mutation â˘Â kicks in, the show continuing to reach for ways to convince us that these new versions of the team serve any real purpose. The TechnoGang are no match for the Turtles (and I suppose also Carter) in their beast modes and quickly retreat to the Dreggnaut, the transmitter destroyed moments later.Â
Lamenting that the new forms of the Turtles make them too powerful to be defeated in battle, Dregg declares that he intends to capture one of them to replicate the mutation for his own warriors. HiTech points out that theyâd need two members of the group to isolate âthe common mutant geneâ. To achieve this, Dregg gets out his inter-galactic rolodex again, this time contacting an insect-like grey alien called Sleazebug whoâs recruiting participants for a Pan-Galactic [fighting] Tournament.Â
Outside the satellite transmission site our heroes are recovering from their mutations when an alarm sounds, indicating a break-in back at Carterâs workshop. The group arrive to find Jet wearing the Turboflex, which after being activated dramatically increases in size. Before Carter can take on his foe Sleazebug bursts into the building, using a teleportation beam to transport Carter, Jet, Leo and Mikey away.Â
Act two opens with Donatello and Raphael baffled by the disappearance of both Jet and their friends. Sleazebug explains that he âzapped them to an asteroid on the other side of the galaxyâ. After taunting the team, he flies away, leaving Donnie and Raph with no obvious means of rescuing their allies.Â
The captured combatants find themselves in a holding cell, with Carter and Jet again ready to go at it until Michaelangelo steps in. Leonardo demands that Jet use the Turboflex to bend the bars holding them in, but a four-eyed guard insists this is impossible. The alien goes on to explain that the group âare on a private asteroid belonging to Karg, the martial arts grand master of the galaxyâ. Leo, Mikey Carter and Jet have been condemned to spend the rest of their lives competing in combat for the entertainment of the wealthy audience. When the group refuse to participate, energy beams are used by the guard as a means of torture, as he warns them that if they donât fight, theyâll be exterminated. Reluctantly, the quartet comply. Michaelangelo is first up, soon finding himself doing battle with a blue, four-armed monster.Â
In the Turtle Van, Donatello modifies the tracking equipment used to hunt the TechnoGang so that Sleazebugâs vehicle can be tracked down. For some reason, this involves hooking up the same kind of joystick Mikey and Carter were using in their PC fighting game at the start of the episode; hey, whatever works, I suppose.Â
After learning that the battles in the tournament are no holds barred, with all weapons authorised for use, Michaelangelo whips out his grappling hook and soon defeats his opponent. Leonardo is up next, pitted against a funky asymmetrical cyborg... guy? The rest of the group watch on, wondering why Leo isnât going on the offensive. Jet uses this as an opportunity to goad Carter again, declaring that the ally of the Turtles is as cowardly as they are.Â
Donatello and Raphael follow the signals from the tracking equipment to a playground, which appears to be the same one that the team retreated to in the previous episode. Though it initially seems implausible that this would be Sleazebugâs hideout, a see-saw conceals a secret tunnel. Heading underground, Donatello wonders why the villain would leave them behind, and why he seemed to be taunting them into following him.Â
Back on the asteroid Leonardo continues to evade his opponent, eventually winning by ducking out of the way and allowing the cyborg to run into a wall. After returning to the cell he explains his reasoning for not fighting aggressively, arguing that the alien was too strong to engage in hand-to-hand combat. The two Turtles use this opportunity to remind Carter that âsome battles canât be won by fightingâ. Leonardo re-iterates this, emphatically adding that âsome fights you just have to walk away fromâ.Â
What happens next is... confusing, as one of the four-eyed guards chucks another, entirely identical guard into the holding cell. The captured guard explains heâs being punished for allowing a prisoner to escape, and is now forced to compete in the games himself. Karg has declared that should the guard lose in battle heâll be killed, a revelation that elicits mockery from Jet because yes, heâs a dick.Â
Donatello and Raphael wander through the underground complex until they run into Sleazebug, who continues to taunt them with the teleportation ray. All of this has been part of a trap laid by the alien and Dregg, with a set of mechanical arms emerging that capture the two Turtles. Dregg watches these events unfold from his ship, elated that things are going so well. Soon, he declares, Donnie and Raphâs DNA will unlock the secrets that will make his own troops invincible.
We return to the asteroid for a montage of the ongoing battles. Michaelangelo is pitted against a huge blue monster but comes out victorious after changing into his new mutant form. Carter throws down against a group of six little blue-and-green aliens who merge into one, larger opponent: he wins via a well-placed dropkick, which causes them to revert to their original form, now scattered on the ground. Jet easily defeats a dinosaur-like creature and rubs his victory in Carterâs face, the rivals agreeing to a one-on-one battle without the Turboflex.Â
Leonardo is matched with the punished guard and initially appears to have the upper hand, but mid-way through the battle notices the other members of Kargâs group wielding laser blasters, ready to finish off their former associate should he lose. Realising whatâs on the line, Leo quietly instructs the battling guard to disarm him, explaining that a victory wouldnât be worth the loss of his life. The guard comes out on top, living to fight another day.Â
Dregg arrives to personally goad Donatello and Raphael, explaining his plan to learn the secrets of the teamâs new mutations. To ensure his findings are accurate heâll require a guinea pig, and as heâs unwilling to potentially lose any of his own troops he double-crosses Sleazebug, ordering him to be carried away. To add insult to injury, the alien warlord smashes the teleportation ray, ensuring that thereâs no means for everyone sent to the fighting asteroid to return home.Â
In their battle â which appears to have been made an officially-sanctioned contest â Jet immediately goes back on his vow to not use the Turboflex, the invention expanding once more. Confusingly when the show returns from commercials for its third act Carter is already on the ground, suggesting heâs been roughed up off-screen. Jet continues to toss his foe around until Carter inevitably powers up into his mutant form, now in a position to fight back. In Sleazebugâs hideout Donatello and Raphael also mutate, now big enough to free themselves from the metallic claws restraining them. Furious, the rampaging duo set out to get revenge on Dregg.Â
Michaelangelo and Leonardo are offered their freedom by the punished guard as a means of thanking them for throwing the earlier fight. He goes on to reveal the existence of a teleporter that will allow them to return to Earth, but they canât leave without Carter and step in to break up the ongoing fight. As Mikey drags his (now normal again) friend away, Jet again whines that his enemy is a âstinkinâ cowardâ - itâs like heâs trying to get that over as his catchphrase or something.Â
The guard helps the Turtles and Carter to use a Turtlecom to program a path back to Earth. Perhaps it seems odd to you, as it did to me, that in a story which has emphasised the importance of not taking a life in battle the Turtles would just abandon Jet on the fighting asteroid â surely thereâs only so long he can survive with or without the Turboflex on his own. As it turns out, the show acknowledges this by having Jet arrive to hassle Carter again moments before the groupâs departure. He declares that their showdown isnât over; Carter insists that it is, and that Jet lost, something that clearly isnât true as Mikey did a run-in and Jet was still on his feet when his opponent was dragged away.Â
Carter tricks Jet by performing the âFist of Ironâ, a move that he points out can only be beaten by the Flying Crane. When Jet tries to do the counter-manoeuvre the Turboflex freezes up. Carter disarms the exo-suit, demanding that his foe return with them to Earth. Youâd think that would be the end of it, but in a truly head-scratching moment Jet announces that no, he wonât be coming back, as the fighting asteroid is âone outfit [he] wonât get kicked out ofâ. With that, Carter and the Turtles head back to their own world as a trio.Â
A further swerve follows as Sleazebug is seen being thrown into a chamber by Dregg, emerging moments later having now been transformed into an immense, lumbering monster. Initially it looks as if the betrayed alien will be horrified by his transformation a la Baxter Stockman, but it turns out he likes his new, powerful form. Donatello and Raphael emerge to battle Sleazebug but are reverted to their normal selves seconds later. The odds are against the duo in the fight that follows, with Dregg ready to finish them off using a laser cannon. Before he can do so a portal opens, from which Leo, Mikey and Carter emerge. Leonardo destroys Dreggâs weapon rush to the reunited Turtles sabotage the hideoutâs mutation machine. As this is connected to the main power core a chain reaction kicks in, the entire complex beginning to fall in upon itself. The Turtles and Carter and the surface as Dregg makes his own escape alongside Sleazebug and HiTech in his shuttle.Â
In the Lair, the Turtles recount the dayâs events to April, noting that while the underground base was destroyed, they expect to encounter Sleazebug again. We close today with Michaelangelo and Carter having reprogrammed their fighting game (now running on a shoebox-like games console) to incorporate fewer moves and more âninja wisdomâ. The result baffles the rest of the team as they watch the two characters shake hands in the manner of the âfriendshipâ finishers from Mortal Kombat. Lemonade? Please!Â
At the start of the Red Sky era, I wrote of the increased competition that had led to this reinvention of the TMNT cartoon, the green teens struggling to stay relevant as the 1990s progressed. In season seven we had already seen the show react to the arrival of Batman: The Animated Series with âNight of the Dark Turtleâ. This was followed in season eight with obvious attempts to win back viewers lost to both X-Men and Power Rangers with the HAVOC trilogy and âCyber-Turtlesâ respectively. âThe Showdownâ checks off another box by explicitly acknowledging the popularity of the one-on-one fighting game boom, in particular Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. All of this is surely too little, too late: the ideal point to do this would have been in season seven, when the first MK game was arriving on home systems, the arcade release of Super Street Fighter II also happening around that time. As it is, here in late 1995 it feels like Turtles is showing up to a party long after everyone else has gone home.Â
As if to add insult to injury, the fighting game boom of 1992-1994 even included the Turtles themselves in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters, a 1993 Konami home console title which is really three different but conceptually similar games (for Super Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive / Genesis and the Nintendo Entertainment System). I dare say the execution of the idea there, and the idea of the Turtles engaging in battle alongside supporting characters from various TMNT continuities in the spirit of friendly competition, is more compelling than the half-hearted version of it we get here. In this contest, only two of the Turtles do battle, against a group of unremarkable aliens weâve never seen before. Accompanying them is Carter, who remains more of a hindrance to the show than an asset, and then... thereâs the other guy.Â
Jet McCabe might be the most inscrutable character Iâve encountered while writing Turtlethon. What exactly is the show trying to achieve with this guy? Heâs some kind of techno... martial arts... dork? Perhaps at this point in the run David Wise is chucking darts at post-it notes on the wall, allowing fate to dictate whatever mish-mash of ideas should follow. More likely, as I hinted at upon the conclusion of the last entry, Jet is part of the wider âGet the Ball to Carterâ project that TMNT is now hell-bent upon, introducing a rival for the new pet whoâs so shrill and insufferable that surely weâll have no choice but to root for the freshly-appointed number one friend of the Turtles. Go on Carter, put him in his place! Guest star Robbie Rist follows on from Brian Tochi as the second voice actor of the Turtles from the live-action movies to appear in the show, leaning into the role of Jet with a chalkboard-scratching whininess, but it doesnât help. If anything, the fact that this is the kind of guy Carter had associated with in the past only makes him look worse. What we wind up with is another episode of what is rapidly becoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Carter. We could have had a cool story about the Turtles participating in a fighting tournament; instead screen time is constantly given over to the new guy and his petty feud with some ridiculous-looking dweeb. Meanwhile once again poor April is almost entirely sidelined here as this once wildly popular series continues its focus-group led descent into oblivion.Â
If this all seems more than a tad depressing, thereâs some solace to be found in that at least Lord Dregg remains a worthwhile villain, one thatâs easily the best thing to come out of this yearâs otherwise misguided efforts to again âfixâ TMNT. With three episodes remaining in this season, weâll see if his presence is enough to turn things around beginning with the next adventure, âSplit-Secondâ.Â

Opposites do attract - Katie McCabe
Hope you like this @veteranwerewolf95
Word count : 1k
âReally, Katey bear, still asleep?âI sighed, as I walked back into my and Katieâs bedroom after having breakfast she was still fast asleep, snores escaping her.
She had been sleeping in a lot more than necessary for the Ireland captain after having jet lag from coming back from Australia so I had let her sleep in but I had to start getting ready and she still wasnât awake.
I got back into bed, pulling the covers over us and I turned over to face her, it was kind of creepy as I was staring at her, but I was just admiring my girlfriend.
I cupped her face in my hands as she grumbled in her sleep her hand resting on the side of her face as she slept while I smiled, watching in cuteness.
It didnât look like she would be able to awake from her slumber anytime soon so I would have to be the one to do it.
âBabycakes, wake up for meâ I graced with a smile, lying on my side as I looked at her, brushing the hair out of her eyes.
I kissed her softly for a few minutes before I felt her kiss me back. I pulled away in shock giving her the chance to yawn her head off.
âGood morningâ I smiled at her, stroking her jaw as she mumbled things I couldnât quite catch onto.
âBabycakes?, reallyâ she quirked an eyebrow at me for the weird names as I shrugged, it was silent got a moment before we both laughed, leaning against each other's bodies.
Clearly someone who wasnât too happy to have been woken up on a Saturday morning . She turned away from me, flipping her phone over to see what the time read before moving to face me again.
âUgh itâs so earlyâ she complained, sitting up on the bed and laying her back against the headboard.
âBaby, it's 10:35â I reminded her as I sat on her lap and she pulled me closer and let her hands rest on my ass.
âSo, what are we doing today?â I ask, smiling nuzzling my head into the crook of her tanned neck.
She wrapped her left arm around my shoulder, resting her chin on top of mine, giving my hairline a kiss.
âSleep, hopefullyâ she mumbled into my hair and closed her eyes making me roll my eyes.
âBaby, we canât sleep all dayâ I pulled away from her chest making her whine with a pout on her lips.
âWhy not?âshe groaned, dropping her head on my shoulder as I stroked her hair with a smile.
âCan we go shopping today?âI ask, moving her hair as I began to kiss her neck.
âNoâ she disagreed straight away, feeling tired and wanting to spend the day in bed, together.
But it was hard to disagree as she had to hide a moan while I kept sucking on her neck.
âBaby pleaseâ I looked up from where I was sucking on her collarbone with doe eyes which she tried to look away from.
âNoâ she forced out, struggling against me as I grabbed her chin, holding her in place.
âFor me?âI gave her a sly smile knowing she couldnât resist me.
âFineâ she gave in making me smile. I jumped up, peppering kisses all over her face as she giggled trying to push me away.
âThank you, thank you, thank youâ I grinned at her, I had meant to go for a shopping trip for a while now and getting to spend the day with Katie made it even better.
I jumped off the bed, running towards the wardrobe to find an outfit for me to wear leaving Katie in the comfort of our bed, alone.
âWait, come back!â
A couple hours later
âWhy did I agree to this?âKatie groans rubbing at her eyes as I dragged her through the shopping centre.
âCause you love meâ I turned round, giving her a cheeky smile and pulling her into a kiss.
âDamn rightâ she mumbled against my lips before I pulled away to walk to the next beauty shop ahead making Katie whine in displeasure.
âCmon Kate, just a couple more shops and then we can go for some lunch yeah? How about subway?âI suggested, making her smile that I could only grace on her dashing face.
âOkay,â she sighed as I leaned up to kiss her cheek causing a blush to spread on her face and up her before we entered the shop.
Katie managed to survive the last shop, and by that I mean she stood in the corner, my shopping bags in her hands, complained about standing up but secretly undressed me with her eyes as she watched me try on clothes.
âKatie, whatâs up?âI looked up at her, seeing her wrapping her arms around my waist.
âCan we go home now?âShe asked, nibbling on my neck.
âBaby, weâre almost doneâi told her, patting her right arm to let me go hearing a small whine making me chuckle .
âBut Y/N, darling, baby, the love of my life, Iâm tired, I hate shopping, everyoneâs up my arse, I just wanna go home and be with you, and Iâm hungryâshe complained with a huff.
âKate, this is the last shop okay? Then we can get some food and cuddle all you want but let me goâi said with a giggle, trying to push her away from me .
âFineâshe grumbled, letting me go as i headed over the lady who was helping me out .
âSorry, sheâs allergic to smilingâI told her apologetically as me and her, whoâs name was Lucy, giggled .
âI heard that!â
âOkay, thank you, byeâi said to the ladyâs working as me and Katie headed on of the shop . I turned to Katie as she wrapped her arm around my shoulder. or
âOk Iâm done now, we can go get some foodâ I smiled heading round the corner to the subway as I could practically see the hunger in her eyes.
âFinallyâ she mumbled as I hit her shoulder.
âShut up, I know you secretly enjoyed it your just tiredâ I told her as she rolled her eyes with a smirk.
âAnything to make you happyâ she hummed kissing the side of my head.
Once me and Katie sat down and got our food, she grabbed my hand across the table as I looked up at her.
âHey babe?â she asked me.
âYes my love?âI asked kissing her knuckles, knowing she was about to tell me something.
âYou're the only girl that can make me smileâ she mumbled as she looked down at the ground all flustered, suddenly gone shy.
âAww, Katie bear, come hereâ I smiled in appreciation, I knew this was the way of showing that she loved me.
âI love you tooâ I hummed, breathing in her scent.
This was therapy to me for the Katie and ruesha news đđ

The case for the Leafs to be underrated contenders this year despite a long history of early playoff exits.
Only one team in the entire league has more wins this year with 52
Won the atlantic division which is the most competitive division in the league 5 out of 8 eastern conference playoff teams are from the atlantic and that's only because 3 metro teams are guaranteed a spot. and the atlantic includes the previous cup champions
The worst team in the east is Philadelphia with 76 points, the worst team in the west has 52, the west has more bottom feeders that inflate the win totals of the leaders in the west. They also have very few loser points making the final points based standings look like they are further behind the league leaders even though the only team with more wins than them is the jets.
Leafs will have home ice advantage for the first time in a long time, and will even maintain home ice against any team in the east aside from Washington.
Leafs roster is no longer constructed by Kyle Dubas the idiot now ruining the penguins
Leafs have a real coach now who has won a cup before and not some nepotism hire from the soo
Leafs have not had a good goalie since Eddie Belfour, this year though goalie Anthony Stolarz is the league save percentage leader with a .926 save percentage and has 3 shutouts in his last 4 games he's also 3rd in goals against average.
Leafs also have a second goalie who has been very good this year in Joseph Woll who's 13th in the league in save percentage and who has won games against both Boston and Tampa in the playoffs before.
Leafs defence has been a major issue since the early 2000's. With the additions of Jake McCabe, OEL, Tanev and Carlo along with decent depth pieces like Benoit, Myers they have lots of big solid defencemen. They also no longer have any huge liabilities in defence like Jake Gardiner, Nikita Zaitsev, Cody Ceci or Justin Holl
Their stars are buzzing Mitch Marner just secured his first ever 100 point season and has been unbelievable all year. John Tavares seems to be defying his age and is having an incredible year nobody was expecting. Nylander is second league wide in goal scoring behind only Draisaitl. And Auston Matthews just became one of the top 10 fastest in league history to reach 400 goals scoring at a pace faster than even Alex Ovechkin and managed to put up 30+ goals despite missing a lot of the season, playing through injury and even needing to fly to Germany to see a specialist for his recovery.
They have depth scoring now with the emergence of Matthew Knies, and Bobby McMann not to mention the late season offense from Robertson.
They've got guys with passion and the intangibles you need to play a gritty hard fought playoff series like Domi, McCabe, Laughton, Benoit, and Knies who is on record as being heavier than Ryan Reaves who also could end up playing some games. Not to mention Max Pacioretty who I think surprised everyone when he showed up and was a heavy physical presence.
As much as they struggle to beat Boston the Senators have historically been unable to beat the Leafs in the playoffs...even when the senators had their number during the regular season.
Superstitious reasons: Last time that both Boston and Detroit missed the playoffs was 67 which is also famously the last time the Leafs won the cup, both teams missed the playoffs this year. Also the first goal scored by a Leafs player this year was #67
I can just feel it
go leafs go

so. the main thing we know about Kyle is. he likes his guys.
this manifests in many different ways: most notable of which being that he is loyal to coaching staff and former players of his -- whenever he gms a team, sheldon keefe is his head coach; the current leafs roster is stacked with former soo greyhounds; he gives out no trade clauses generously; et cetera. we've all seen the soo jokes. but what can we glean from this?
firstly, that kyle is more likely to trade picks than players, even prospects. this is good and also bad: we have our 23 first, which is good, and we're desperately cap-strapped, which is bad. win some lose some.
secondly, that we are cap strapped. why is this a consequence of kyle Liking His Guys? well, it's because of the third reason.
thirdly, because kyle understands, almost as much as skill, that the vibes are crucial to a good team. this is why the winnipeg jets went from bad last year to good this year with hardly much more than a coaching and captaincy change. this is why kyle spent a first round pick on nick foligno. this is why john tavares was appointed captain. this is why the leafs wore pride tape as the away team on another team's pride night. this is why the bruins are unbeatable.
because kyle values the vibes he is willing to pay the big bucks for people he knows are good in the locker room even if they're not as shiny on the ice as some others. matt murray, nick foligno, jason spezza, jake muzzin. this -- and a brutally unlucky stroke that COVID flattened the cap right after 1634 signed their contracts -- is why we are cap strapped.
liking his guys and valuing the vibes drives the sorts of teams he wants to build: structured, possession-heavy, 200-foot. besides The Curse the leafs have very few weaknesses. kyle is very good at his job.
so what does that mean for trades?
one, that kyle isn't going for a rental. he's made that mistake in foligno before -- someone you sign on an expiring contract without plans of extension who doesn't work out and walks in UFA. he paid a prized first round pick for him. he hasn't used a first round pick in his entire tenure [citation needed but i think it's true off the top of my head]. if he's going to spend it on the scoring we so desperately need, he's going to spend it on term.
two, that kyle isn't going to get someone controversial. fuck you patrick kane (controversial being a mild term here)
three, that kyle likely won't get involved in a big show. because he general manages The Leafs, every move of his is picked apart and every GM in the league wants to see him (well, The Leafs, but him by proxy) lose, which means if there's a bidding war his offer is last on the list unless it's the shiniest by far. and because of the cap situation and his reluctance to give up valued players for strangers, his offer almost never will be.
so what targets remain?
patrick kane violates (đŹ) all three of the guidelines here, which means he should remain a chicagoan pissbaby forever. timo meier is the prize, which means that the third guideline is almost certainly blocking his arrival (not to mention RFA status and 10 mil QO). gavrikov, mccabe, and lafferty are straight up bad and we're trying to cup contend here. ryan o'reilly is a rental and aging but does have a good leadership reputation. karlsson is far too expensive but otherwise ticks all the boxes.
i doubt, with the possible exception of meier, that kyle is pursuing anyone on this list. but the fact remains that the leafs need someone, and that the deadline is inching nearer. the probable addition will likely be out of left field. but whoever he is I hope he helps

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing, pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan. All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with a few serious injuries.
This water landing of a powerless jetliner became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson", and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history". The Board rejected the notion that the pilot could have avoided ditching by returning to LaGuardia or diverting to nearby Teterboro Airport.
The pilots and flight attendants were awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in recognition of their "heroic and unique aviation achievement".
An NTSB board member called the ditching "the most successful ... in aviation history. These people knew what they were supposed to do and they did it and as a result, no lives were lost." New York State Governor David Paterson called the incident "a Miracle on the Hudson." U.S. President George W. Bush said he was "inspired by the skill and heroism of the flight crew," and praised the emergency responders and volunteers. President-elect Barack Obama said that everyone was proud of Sullenberger's "heroic and graceful job in landing the damaged aircraft." He thanked the crew, whom he invited to his inauguration five days later.
The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators awarded the crew the rarely bestowed Master's Medal on January 22, 2009 for outstanding aviation achievement, at the discretion of the Master of the Guild. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the crew with the Keys to the City, and Sullenberger with a replacement copy of a library book lost on the flight, Sidney Dekker's Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability. Rescuers received Certificates of Honor.
The crew received a standing ovation at the Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009, and Sullenberger threw the ceremonial first pitch of the 2009 Major League Baseball season for the San Francisco Giants. His Giants jersey was inscribed with the name "Sully" and the number 155 â the count of people aboard the plane.
On July 28, passengers Dave Sanderson and Barry Leonard organized a thank you luncheon for emergency responders from Hudson County, New Jersey, on the shores of Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, New Jersey, where 57 passengers had been brought following their rescue. Present were members of the U.S. Coast Guard, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, NY Waterway Ferries, the American Red Cross, Weehawken Volunteer First Aid, the Weehawken Police Department, West New York E.M.S., North Bergen E.M.S., the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management, the New Jersey E.M.S. Task Force, the Guttenberg Police Department, McCabe Ambulance, the Harrison Police Department, and doctors and nurses who treated survivors.
Sullenberger was named Grand Marshal for the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.
In August 2010, aeronautical chart publisher Jeppesen issued a humorous approach plate titled "Hudson Miracle APCH," dedicated to the five crew of Flight 1549 and annotated "Presented with Pride and Gratitude from your friends at Jeppesen."
Sullenberger retired on March 3, 2010, after thirty years with US Airways and its predecessor, Pacific Southwest Airlines. At the end of his final flight he was reunited with Skiles and a number of the passengers from Flight 1549.
In December 2010, Sullenberger was appointed an Officer of France's Legion of Honour.
N106US, the accident aircraft, was moved to a salvage yard in New Jersey and put up for auction a week after the accident, but remained without takers for over two years. In 2011, it was purchased by the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and reassembled, minus the engines, in the museum's main hangar, where it is currently on display.
In 2013, the entire crew was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
The ditching was recorded by several closed-circuit television cameras. Television reports and documentaries produced soon afterward contained extensive video of the ditching and rescue, and recorded interviews with the aircrew, passengers, rescuers, and other key participants.
Sullenberger's 2009 memoir, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters was adapted into a feature film Sully, directed by Clint Eastwood. It starred Tom Hanks as Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart as co-pilot Jeff Skiles. It was released by Warner Bros. on September 9, 2016.
In May 2011, CBS News hired Sullenberger as an aviation and safety expert.
His second book, Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders, was published in May 2012. He was ranked second in Time's Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009, after Michelle Obama.
In December 2018, he received the Tony Jannus Award for distinguished achievement in commercial air transportation.
Sullenberger's speech before Congress concerning U.S. civil aviation is featured in Michael Moore's 2009 documentary Capitalism: A Love Story.
Sullenberger is also referred to in the 2011 romantic comedy film Friends with Benefits. Throughout the film, Justin Timberlake's character repeatedly suggests to people he meets aboard planes that modern airplanes practically fly themselves, and that Sullenberger's feat was less impressive than it was portrayed, an idea for which he encounters incredulity and hostility. Mila Kunis' character is also seen reading Sullenberger's English Wikipedia article.
The 2010 song "A Real Hero", by French electronica artist College and the band Electric Youth, is about Captain Sullenberger and the Flight 1549 water landing. Frontman Austin Garrick was inspired to write the song by his grandfather, whose reference to Sullenberger as "a real human being and a real hero" became the song's refrain.
Radio personality Garrison Keillor wrote "Pilot Song: The Ballad of Chesley Sullenberger III" for the January 17, 2009 edition of his radio variety show A Prairie Home Companion.
Sullenberger appeared as himself in a cameo role in the 2017 film Daddy's Home 2.
"Hudson River Runway", the March 14, 2011, episode of the TV series Mayday, documents the events around Flight 1549's emergency landing, and contains interviews with several of its real-life participants. Captain Sullenberger is not interviewed in the show, but is portrayed in reenactments by actor Christopher Britton.
President George H. W. Bush's service dog Sully, who was assigned to Bush in mid-2018 after the death of Bush's wife Barbara, was named after Sullenberger.
Sully is featured in the pilot of the 2020 Fox cartoon series Duncanville.
Sullenberger was widely celebrated for landing the plane with no loss of life.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles was flying as a First Officer on flight 1549 due to a staff reduction at US Airways;Â he had usually flown as Captain prior to the staff reduction and actually had slightly more flight hours than Sullenberger (though he had much less experience in the Airbus A320).
Both Skiles' parents were pilots during his childhood, and he became a pilot himself when he was just sixteen years old. He first worked flying cargo airplanes, and then worked for Midstate Airlines from 1983 to 1986, but at the time of the emergency landing he had been with US Airways for 23 years.
Atul Gawande, author of The Checklist Manifesto, asserted that the successful emergency landing relied on the cooperation of Sullenberger and Skiles. Gawande's central premise is that even really experienced people in any field encounter rare events, and that successfully coping with the rare event requires first the careful anticipation of future emergencies, and second, preparing a well thought-out list of steps to follow, in advance.
In his book Gawande reminded readers that, during an emergency, there are so many tasks to complete, that the co-pilot is working at least as hard as the pilot. Sullenberger had taken on the task of finding a safe place to land, and actually landing, leaving his experienced copilot Skiles the task of following the checklist to try to restart the jet engines. He noted that Skiles was able to complete the checklist in the less than three minute period between the bird strike and the landing, noting this was "something investigators later testified to be "very remarkable" in the time frame he hadâand something they found difficult to replicate in simulation."
Skiles went on to become the Vice President of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA) that represents the interests of 28,000 airline pilots in safety and security issues. In this role he was instrumental in the creation of the First Officer Qualification rule which significantly increased the requirements for training and experience of First Officers on the flight deck of US registered airliners. Skiles joined with the Families of Continental Flight 3407 and the National Air Disaster Alliance to mold the creation of and ensure passage of the Airline Safety Act of 2010. This sweeping legislation significantly improved safety in the US airline industry and as of 2020 there has not been even one fatality due to a US airline accident in over 10 years.
Skiles is a writer and since 2011 has published over 100 articles on safety and general interest aviation topics in nationally distributed magazines such as Sport Aviation, FLYING, Air & Space, PilotMAG, Midwest Flyer, Vintage Airplane, and the Physicians Executive Journal.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles, as of 2020, is piloting Boeing 787 Dreamliners for American Airlines.

Torch Song
My Writing Fandom: Arrow, DCU Characters: Laurel Lance, Oliver Queen, Circe, Thea Queen, Felicity Smoak, John Diggle, Barry Allen, John Constantine, Mari McCabe Pairing: Laurel Lance/Oliver Queen Summary:Â When Circe decides to put Team Arrow in its place for daring to stop a sorcerer like Damien Darhk, Laurel must reveal something long-hidden about herself to restore Oliver to his rightful form.
None of them had seen it coming. Of course, none of them were all that knowledgeable about magic-users they hadnât personally met, so it was hard to prepare for a sorceress out of mythology.
Laurel wasnât convinced that this wasnât an assumed name on the part of the self-styled supposed Circe. But that didnât matter much when her powers were the same as in the book and sheâd chosen to demonstrate them on Oliver.
âThink youâre clever enough to defeat a sorcerer? Try fighting your way out of this.â The unknown woman had cackled before zapping their teammate with a jet of light. Theyâd all watched in horror as Oliver had shrunk, the bow falling to the ground and arrows spilling from the quiver as a pig tripped over the shafts, oinking and squealing with distress.
Thea had screamed and launched herself at Circe, who had disappeared in a blinding flash before the smaller archer could make contact. Laurel had been more concerned with stopping the newly transformed Oliver from running blindly down the alley.
âOllie? Ollie, if youâre in there, just calm down,â sheâd tried. It had been impossible to know if he could understand the words, but he slowed to a stop in front of her long enough for John to heave him up into his arms.
Theyâd brought him back to the base and immediately began calling around to their friends to see if anyone might know some way to undo the damage. Laurel was currently on the phone with Vixen, though it wasnât sounding promising.
âMy speciality is connecting with the spirit of an animal, not literally changing into the animal. Much less changing another person. And the research Iâve done into magic so far hasnât extended to the Mediterranean. Iâm sorry, Laurel, I wish I could help.â
âThatâs okay. I had to try.â
The elevator dinged just as she hung up, and Laurel was shocked to see Felicity stride into the room, the first time since sheâd quit the team a few weeks prior.
âWhere is he? I have got to see this. Oh!â Felicity drew up short upon spotting the pig who was currently penned in via strategically placed chairs and very unhappy about it. âThis is such a Spirited Away moment right now. I canât even tell if itâs him.â She spun around to face them. âSo what did he do to get cursed by a witch?â
âNothing,â Thea replies with a hand on her hip. âThat lady showed up and cursed him out of nowhere. How do you even know about it?â
âI called her,â said John. âWe need Constantineâs number, so I thought she could get it off Oliverâs phone.â
âWe donât need his phone,â Laurel countered. âHe gave me his number on a card when he was here.â
Felicityâs eyebrows raised in interest. âAnd did you call him?â
âHavenât needed to. Until now.â Laurel went for her purse, digging around in it until she located the card. She smoothed out the corners and dialed the number, waiting as it rang.
âHello?â
âJohn? Itâs Laurel Lance. We met last fall.â
âLaurel, love! Not that Iâm not happy to hear a birdsong right now, but Iâm headed into a tricky bit of work. Can we make this quick?â
âOkay.â She drew in a breath and said in one go, âOliverâs been turned into a pig by a woman who claims to be Circe for being able to beat Darhk.â
Constantine let out a low whistle. âCirce, eh? Sheâs impulsive like that.â
âThen sheâs real?â Laurel asked in bewilderment. It was hard to imagine that a character from a story â one of the few novels Oliver had ever read in school, ironically enough â could be a real, breathing person. And still alive, no less.
âYeah, but listen, sheâs in it for the ego, really. You lot stopped Darhk, and she must have felt a bit threatened, right? Wants you to âknow your placeâ,â he said with a heavy dose of sarcasm.
That seemed to fit with the womanâs behavior.
âYouâre going to have to appeal to her sense of vanity,â he continued.
âHow do we do that?â
âThereâs a club she frequents. Iâll send you the address. Take Oliver there and beg her to change him back. Sheâs the only one who can, stuff like that. She may want something from you in return, though make sure of what it is before you agree to it. That ought to satisfy her.â
âOkay,â she replied. Laurel knew it would have been a lot to expect him to drop everything and come help â assuming her could even break the curse â but she was not enthusiastic about going back to the sorceress who had done this to Oliver.
âGood luck, love. And give Oliver a scratch behind the ears for me.â
âGoodbye, John,â she said, ignoring the request before hanging up. âHe says we have to ask Circe to undo it.â
âWhy would she?â John asked.
Laurel sighed. âApparently, it will prove to her that sheâs more powerful than us and calm her down.â Her phone buzzed with a text. The Amphitheatre. âConstantine just sent me the address of the club she frequents. Itâs on Mykonos, so weâre going to have to take some days off.â She could always call in a couple personal days. She hadnât used any yet this year and was unlikely to later.
âHow are we going to transport Oliver?â Thea asked, and they all frowned. None of them were exactly familiar with the procedure of getting a farm animal cleared for travel.
âBarry could just run us,â Felicity pointed out. Heâd want to help out.â
Laurel grimaced. Sheâd been hoping to avoid involving Team Flash. They made light of things at the best of times, which was good, but would Oliver see it as making fun of him? She could tell he valued that role of mentor to Barry and didnât want him to feel embarrassed around the other hero after this. But it was the quickest way to get him back.
Felicity was already calling besides. âBarry, we could really use your help right now. Itâs about Oliver.â
Fast enough, the Flash was in their base. âWhatâs going on, guys? And uhh, whatâs with the pig?â
âOliverâs the pig,â Felicity explained, and Laurel couldnât help noting she seemed happy to say so. She rubbed her temples; now was a bad time for the two of them to be on the rocks.
Barry whirled back around to gape at the enclosure of chairs. âWhat happened to him?â
Oliver made a sort of squealing noise, and Laurel couldnât tell if that was meant to be in answer or if he was simply agitated by Barryâs fast movements. There was little way of knowing just how cognizant of everything he was, though she could only hope for his sake that it wasnât all that much.
âThis witch named Circe cursed him, and we gotta go talk to her,â Thea added. âLaurelâs got the address.â
To his credit, Barry took all this information in stride with only a few more shocked looks here and there. âOkay. How many people are going?â
All of them raised their hands, even Felicity. âI mean, I canât pass up meeting the actual Circe,â she defended.
âDigg, you first, then Oliver?â At Johnâs nod, Barry and he were gone in the blink of an eye. With another zip of electricity, Oliver disappeared from the makeshift pig pen. When Barry next returned, he paused with his hands on his knees.
âI think heâs heavier as the pig,â he wheezed.
âWell, I should be much lighter,â Felicity remarked, walking up to him. Barry scooped her up, and they were gone.
âHave you ever traveled via speedster?â Laurel asked Thea in the ensuing silence, unable to help a bit of nerves.
âOnce. It was disorienting, but awesome.â That was all Thea got to say before she, too was whisked away.
Laurel replaced her mask over her eyes and shook out her wrists, trying to feel ready.
The next thing she knew, there were arms at her back and under her knees as everything blurred together. Laurel squeezed her eyes shut until she felt herself placed back on her feet.
They stood outside what counted as the stage door to the Amphitheater. John struggled to hold Oliver in order to keep him from running off again while Thea patted the pigâs head in an effort to try and calm him.
âThanks, Barry,â Laurel said. âYou donât have to stay if you need to get back.â
âYouâre sure?â When she nodded, he returned it. âAlright, call if you need me.â With that, he was off.
Felicity looked around from where sheâd been peeking through the stage door. âWait, did Barry just go? How do we get back?â
âA plane? Heâs got a whole city to protect by himself,â Laurel pointed out. âAnd Iâm not sure putting him up against Circe is going to make it look like weâre begging.â She might be more likely to see a metahuman as a threat, and then who knew what sheâd turn the rest of them into?
Laurel joined Felicity at the stage door, easing it open more. âWe can do this, Felicity. The whole team.â It would probably do Oliver some good to know Felicity had come all this way with them. Heâd been struggling to stay positive since the breakup, but maybe this predicament heâd been put in would draw the two exes back together. Laurel could only hope for that much for him.
She held the door open for the others, then followed them through the backstage area, following the sounds of singing.
âCirceâs back in town!â
Thunderous applause sounded from out in the house, and they heard the sorceress speak. âThank you! Oh, my adoring public!â
Thea glanced back at her with a disgusted look Laurel felt herself. Before she could respond in kind, they heard their quarry exit the stage for the side of the wings they were waiting at the edge of. Circeâs eyebrows raised as she stopped short at the sight of them. âWell, that was fast.â
âWe want him back,â John answered plainly.
âPlease,â Laurel stressed. âWe didnât mean any offense to the magical... world? by stopping Darhk. He came to our city and was hurting our people. We did what we had to, and it was very difficult. We wouldnât want to fight anyone with that skill, or better, under ordinary circumstances.â
Circe appraised her, though her eyes narrowed as she locked gazes with Felicity. âI donât remember you.â
âI donât do any fighting,â Felicity said quickly. âJust here for moral support and to, um, see you! Wow, youâre really⌠real.â
âNone of us can do magic, so youâre the only one who can help us,â Thea continued in the wake of the awkward pause their friendâs rambling had caused. âSo will you?â
Circe hummed in thought. âNo, I donât think I will. Not with just that.â
Laurel opened her mouth, ready with another appeal, hands already clasped together, when the woman held up a hand.
âConvince me why I should bother restoring him. What do you stand to lose, here? What place does he hold in your heart? I want to be moved to tears. I want â a performance.â The sorceress gestured up on stage.
âWe have to sing about Olâ uh, Green Arrow?â Thea asked skeptically.
âOh donât worry. The microphoneâs enchanted. It will take your thoughts and feelings and put them to the right music. Iâll even allow you to decide amongst yourselves whose solo debut this will be.â
âLike a magic karaoke? Weird.â Thea shrugged and made to step forward. John, however, shook his head since his arms were too full of pig to reach out. He motioned them all to retreat into a sort of huddle, Oliverâs hooves jutting out into the middle of it while he squirmed around.
âThea canât be the one who does it. If this magic is about pulling the truth out of her, she might let slip that Oliverâs her brother, and we donât know who these people all talk to,â he pointed out in undertone. âIt could get back to Ruve, and that makes her anti-vigilante task force's job that much easier.â
Thea grimaced but seemed to acknowledge the point. As one, their group looked to Felicity. She backed up a step.
âOh no. No way.â
âBut Felicityââ
âI have terrible stage fright. And besides! I donât really have the best feelings about Oliver, in case you havenât noticed.â
âYou canât want him to stay a pig forever,â John said.
âNo, but I also canât really think of anything flattering enough to make a sorceress change him back. I mean, Iâm more likely to get up there and sing âI Will Surviveâ at this point.â
âFelicity, come on.â
As John and Felicity continued to argue, Laurel watched Oliverâs anxious eyes, still blue despite the transformation. He seemed to sense the tense atmosphere, even if he couldnât know they were fighting over his very fate. How could they be this close and not be ready and able to get him back? He would do it for any one of them, she knew that in her bones. No matter what it cost him. She couldnât worry about what it might cost her.
âWhy donât you do it?â
âIâm the only one strong enough to hold him.â
âWell give him a tranq dart or have her make a cage or something, I am notââ
âIâll do it.â Laurel felt just as surprised as the others looked to hear the words come out of her mouth. But she couldnât exactly take them back. âWe need Oliver, and he needs to have this spell broken.â
Thea bit her lip and looked about to say something, so Laurel pulled away from their group and stepped back towards Circe. âIâll sing.â
A wide smile broke out on the sorceressâ face. âExcellent. Of course, we want you in something a little more suited to the stage.â She snapped her fingers, and Laurel felt a sort of strange rush energy as her jacket, undershirt and pants were suddenly replaced by a strapless floor-length evening gown in all black. Her fingerless gloves remained, though the fishnet pattern extended to her upper arms.
âIâve left the mask,â Circe said before she had even finished bringing a hand to her face to check it was still securely in place.
âWhere exactly are my real clothes?â
âItâs an illusion, my dear. It will lift once youâve upheld your end of the bargain.â
Right, she still had to sing. Laurel exchanged brief, worried glances with John and Thea, the latter of whom still looked like she was holding back from saying something. Something Laurel had a feeling Thea had been suspecting for some time. It didnât matter; her suspicions were about to be confirmed one way or the other.
Circeâs hand pressed against her back as she guided Laurel out of the wings with her. Right away, a spotlight hit them and she resisted the impulse to shield her eyes as she was guided towards center stage.
âLadies and gentlemen,â Circe said, her voice somehow magically amplified. âA special songbird all the way from the West Coast of the United States. The mysterious, melodious Black Canary!â
A smattering of applause rose from the audience. She hoped she wasnât blushing. At least no one seemed to question the mask.
As soon as she stepped up to the mic, Laurel felt a powerful wave of something wash over her as an unseen orchestra â perhaps no one was playing, perhaps it was all magic â started up with a swell of mournful notes. Laurel didnât know how she knew when to come in. It was as Circe had said. She just did.
âHe doesnât say the things he should. He acts the way he thinks he should.â She closed her eyes, feeling herself being pulled into the music, for lack of a better word. Into the truth of this song. âBut all the same⌠Iâll play this game his way.
As long as he needs me.â Laurel could feel a slight shake to her voice as she sang. âOh yes, he does need me. In spite of what you see, Iâm sure that he needs me.â
It was everything she had ever felt these last few years. The weariness, the doubt, the bone-deep certainty that, nevertheless, she had to continue on.
Laurel teared up when the word finally came falling off her lips. âThe love I feel inside. The love I have to hide. The hellââ She nearly felt choked. ââIâve got my pride! As long as he needs me!â
She didnât dare look at the others. It was easier facing the audience, backlit by the spotlight on her and making them indistinct. There was going to be no coming back from this when it was all said and done. The team would all know her secret, even if Oliver didnât. And how long could that feasibly last?
She was the Black Canary, but she was singing her swan song.
---
Oliver didnât know what had happened to him. One minute theyâd been patrolling the streets when a woman in a green dress had appeared out of nowhere, declaring him an upstart for daring to defeat a sorcerer like Damien Darhk, and the next minute â well, the woman in green was still there, but the streets were gone. Instead, he found himself on hands and knees in the wings of some sort of theater as an orchestra played under a womanâs singing.
He felt Johnâs hands pull him up and he was crushed in an embrace for a moment. âGood to have you back, man.â
Someone reached for his hand, and as he squeezed back automatically he could tell it was Theaâs. Over Johnâs shoulder, he saw Felicity watching him for a moment before looking down. When had she joined them?
âWhat just happened?â He asked. Some time had clearly passed. But what had he been doing? What had his team done to get him back?
âShh!â The very sorceress who had cursed him hissed at them, eyes never quite leaving the stage. And the more he paid attention, the more it occurred to him â was that Laurelâs voice?
Oliver felt drawn towards the edge of the wings, mouth falling open as he took in the sight of Laurel in her mask and a beautiful dress, standing before a sea of strangers.
âI miss him so much, when he is gone,â she sang, a delicate sweetness in her voice that was at odds with the tortured look on her face. âBut when heâs near me, I carry on⌠The love I feel inside. The love I have to hide. The hellââ He saw her struggling. âIâve got my pride! As long as he needs me!â
âWhat is happening?â He demanded in a low tone. Who was making her do this? And why?
âPayment for reversing my little spell on you,â the sorceress answered just as softly. âI asked them to demonstrate just why they wanted you back. Needed you, even,â she added, her eyes sparkling.
Oliverâs head whipped back to look at the others. Johnâs gaze, the little he could make of it from behind his friendâs helmet, was lowered and somber. Felicityâs head shook side-to-side sadly, though the tips of her ears had turned very pink. Tears leaked from under Theaâs domino mask as her lips pressed tight together.
His fists clenched as he turned back to the woman who had started all of this. âYou undid the spell. She can stop now.â
But the sorceress extended an arm across his path before he could march out onto the stage. âI undid it so you could listen,â she explained as though he were a child. Then she let out a dreamy sigh. âAfter all, itâd be a shame to waste such a torch song.â
Laurelâs torch song. Laurel had been carrying a torch all these years⌠for him? His breath caught and a lump rose in his throat.
âIf you are lonely, then you will know,â Laurelâs voice came out soft, then slowly grew. âWhen someone needs you, you love them soâŚâ She carried the note through, her head raising with defiance in the set of her jaw. Strong to the end. âI wonât betray his trust, though people say I must. Iâve got to be. True. JustâŚâ the music faded out for a breath, and it was into that silence that she declared, âAs long as He! Needs! Me!â
The music rose, flooding his ears. Laurel held the note until she couldnât, until her legs â which he could only guess had been trembling for some time â gave out from under her, and she landed on her knees.
Oliver rushed forward without thought, distantly hearing a door slam behind him somewhere. He reached Laurelâs side and pulled her up, her eyes widening at the sight of him. âOllie?â
There was so much, too much that he wanted to ask, but all that came out as he looked into her eyes was, âIâm sorry.â How could he have been so blind?
âThank you, thank you all!â The sorceress declared, standing near the floor lights. She snapped her fingers, and Laurel was suddenly wearing her Black Canary suit again.
This seemed to jolt her, for she ripped out of his hold and bolted off the stage. Oliver hurried to follow, just catching up with Thea and John on their way out.
âLaurel!â His sister was calling.
âFelicity already left, now this,â John muttered under his breath. He cast a look Oliverâs way as he drew up beside the other man. âWhat are we gonna do, Oliver?â
He didnât have an answer. His mind was still racing. Felicity had shown up when heâd fallen prey to a curse, but she was leaving now. Laurel had confessed to feelings he hadnât thought she possibly still held and now seemed terrified to be in the same room as him. What had he done?
Felicity was nowhere to be seen when he exited out into a back alley where Thea stood, one arm around Laurel and their heads bent close together.
âWhere exactly are we?â He asked.
âOn an island off of Greece. Long story. Look, we gotta figure out which way Felicity went.â
Scarcely had John finished speaking, when a trail of lightning announced Barryâs arrival.
âHey, youâre you again!â
âYouâre here,â Oliver replied, thrown by the sudden appearance.
âOh, well Felicity called for the ride back, so I figured Iâd double back here to get the rest of you. Glad they broke your pig curse.â
âPig curse?â
âNever mind, Oliver. Barry, you gotta get him back to the base to catch Felicity,â John said, adding in an undertone, âThea and Iâll talk to Laurel.â
Oliver looked up in alarm. âWaitââ
But his surroundings were whisked away as he felt himself carried over land and sea, only for it all to come crashing back into solid, jarring shape. A crackle of electricity and Barry was gone again, leaving Oliver to notice Felicity waiting at the elevator.
âIââ He didnât know what he was supposed to say. Was she upset? And why? Oliver couldnât begin to wonder when Laurelâs stricken look and voice were the only thoughts in his head. âIâm sorry if this has made things more difficult,â he decided on lamely.
âWe broke up and realized we couldnât work on a team together, Oliver. Things canât get more difficult,â she stated bluntly. âI thought there was something wrong with me. After all, Laurel could still work with you, right?â She laughed, but it wasnât a funny one. âNow we both know why.â
âI didnât know.â He couldnât believe he hadnât known.
âOf course you didnât. No one in their right mind would ever want someone to know they still had feelings for them after they broke their heart. Just⌠just try to be empathetic with her, alright? I would want to die if I were in Laurelâs shoes right now.â
He swallowed heavily. Was that really how Laurel would feel?
The elevator doors opened, and Felicity stepped inside. âFor the record, you werenât a very cute pig.â Then they closed, and Oliver could only watch the lights signify that it rose up to the ground floor and let her out.
He slowly wandered back towards the conference table and sat, resting his elbows on the table and his head in his hands. It didnât seem as though the others were coming back for a while. Probably consoling Laurel. Something in him ached.
Why had he been forced back here to try and rehash something that had already fallen apart? Felicity had walked out on him twice now, had he really needed a third time? He just felt hollow when it came to the end of his engagement. There was nothing left to feel. Not when his oldest friendship might be on the line half a world away, depending on how badly Laurelâs secret being exposed affected her.
Laurel⌠Laurel had always been there when he needed her. Because he needed her, he realized now with bitter irony. He had asked her all those years ago at Tommyâs grave, and she had never disappointed him. No matter how many times heâd disappointed her in return. He didnât know how it could be that she could love such a man like him. A man of the island.
Beneath the shock, beneath the sudden rush of regret, there was a quiet awe beginning to grow. Laurel loved him. Him, Oliver Queen. She had seen the man he was plain as day, had fought him, been hurt by him and called him out on all his lies and hypocrisies. Yet she loved him still.
A strange sound left him, a stifled sob. His shoulders shook, and Oliver found himself crying in a way he rarely let happen. He could count the times on one hand since heâd gotten back, perhaps even since the island. Usually they were times of extreme grief, but that wasnât what this was. There was a sense of loss, yes, but only of time. Time was something he could make up for.
He was wiping his cheeks dry when John at last appeared in the base, Barry presumably going back for their remaining teammates. âYou alright, man?â
âFine.â Oliver stood. âHowâs Laurel?â
âCalmer. Look, you might wanna just take a walk round the block for a bit till Thea can get her home.â
âI need to talk to her.â No more putting it off, no more running away.
âYou were supposed to be talking to Felicity,â his friend reminded him.
âJohn, I let her go.â It was what she had asked of him last month, and he knew that it had truly been the right call. Maybe heâd known it for a while, but it had taken tonight for it to finally sink in.
With another whoosh of electricity and wind, Thea stood in the base. âWhat are you still doing here?â
âSays he needs to talk to Laurel.â
âShe doesnât want a scene,â Thea said with a severe look that came straight from their mother.
âItâs not going to be a scene,â he insisted. âBut I canât just ignore what happened.â
Barry zipped into being with Laurel in his arms. He set her down on the floor and looked around. âOkay, all back. Everything okay? Is there anythingâŚ?â
âGo home and rest, Barry. And thank you,â Oliver told him. His friend nodded, but Oliver reached out and clasped his shoulder before he could depart. âNot a word to the others,â he added in a low voice.
Barryâs head bobbed up and down quickly a couple times. âWouldnât dream of it.â Then he was gone.
Laurel was gone, too, disappearing back into the changing stalls. Oliver headed that way as well.
âI think we should talk,â he called out.
âThereâs nothing to say.â
âI havenât said anything.â
âExactly.â
He could hear things being thrown around, could picture her kicking her boots off out of some potent mix of anger and shame. Oliver sighed.
âLaurel, please?â
There was silence.
âGive me a minute,â was her request. Oliver nodded to himself and went back to the main area, passing John on his way to change as well.
Thea stood by the conference table looking worried. He wanted to tell her it was going to be okay and the realizations heâd had about himself and his feelings â but this was something Laurel needed to hear first. She was owed that.
Laurel slowly made her way towards them in her civilian clothes, hands flexing with nerves.
âGo ahead and change,â Oliver asked his sister, before indicating the side room with a tilt of his head. Laurel nodded and followed him.
âIf we are actually talking about what happened, I just want to make clear that it doesnât change anything,â Laurel said right away the moment they were alone. âMy feelings are just that. Theyâre not some declaration of intent.â
He knew what was on her mind; Tommy, and the way things had ended between the three of them. He could appreciate the irony of their roles being flipped now, and the irony, too, that they always seemed to end up back here.
âI understand,â he said out loud. âIf you donât want to address it, we donât have to.â
âOkay,â Laurel said with clear relief.
âI was thinking we could address my feelings.â
She fixed him with a look, and he only very narrowly kept a straight face. Slowly, he began walking towards her, closing the gap between them.
âI feel grateful for what you did to help me. I feel angry and sad that you were forced to reveal something about yourself youâd kept secret. Andââ he drew up to her at last, watching Laurel watch him with an intensity in her gaze. ââI feel lucky, selfishly lucky, to know how you feel about me.â
âOllieâŚâ She stared up at him in disbelief.
He nodded. âItâs still gonna take me some time to heal from what happened with Felicity. I know I shouldnât rush that. But Felicity and I, we began because I had thought Iâd lost my chance with the first woman I ever loved. I had no idea that wasnât true.â
âWhat are you saying?â She asked, barely above a whisper. He thought of the way she had poured herself out in that song and how her voice had been a very force. He wanted to give her that strength back.
âIâm saying that you are a part of me, and I will always need you. And if you can just give me some timeâŚâ
She reached out and touched his cheek. âWhatever you need.â
Oliver placed his hand over hers, then turned his face into it, ghosting his lips over her palm. He heard her suck in a breath, and he lowered their hands before pulling her gently into a hug.
Laurel rested there in his arms, head tucked under his chin, and he never wanted her to leave. All the reasons he had ever left ran through his head, and they all sounded pointless now.
âWeâll figure this out. I promise,â he murmured, and her arms shifted up his back a little. Then they slowly drew apart.
Laurel was smiling now, softly, and his heart felt full the way it had as heâd listened to her sing.
âYou know, I never realized you had such a good voice,â he remarked, and grinned when Laurel ducked her head with a breathy laugh.
âI think it may have been the magic.â
âI donât buy it.â
A throat clearing softly had them both looking up. Thea stood at the edge of the archway. âIs it okay?â
âItâs gonna be,â he said while Laurel nodded.Â
She walked over to join Thea. âLetâs call it a night.â
Thea seemed to take some assurance from whatever she saw in Laurelâs expression, for she relaxed and actually smiled in his direction. âSure. Night, Ollie.â
âGoodnight,â he told them both.Â
Laurel exchanged a last, long look with him, and they left the base. With John having departed on his own it seemed, Oliver was left alone to change and to get ready for sleep. Yet it hardly felt as lonely as the other nights since he had moved down here.
He had people in his life who loved him. Friends, family, and Laurel. Always Laurel, who was both of the former categories in her own way and yet so much more.
She was home, and he was finally on his way back there.
