Tu Bishvat (the 15th of Shvat) is called the birthday of the trees! 🌴💐🫒 In my Jewish Madrigals AU, this holiday is Isabela’s favorite.
One of the ways we celebrate is with a seder where we drink wine (or grape juice) and eat different fruits and nuts.

1 year of Encanto: A summary!
I posted many things during this anniversary but I wanted to finish on a summary of this year for me related to Encanto!
Tumblr media
November 24th
Off to the cinema with my best friend to watch Encanto, thinking it'll be shit at worst, or correct at best. First thing I posted about it when going out: "I just saw Encanto. It was very cool, with good songs and an old-fashioned but well-done story."
From that point I started listening to the songs everyday.
November 26th
I make my first analysis of the movie on a Discord server about Disney to say Bruno represent well the topic of the movie, what it is about.
December 18th
I realized I may have a crush on Bruno after spending two weeks downloading a lot of pictures and fanarts of him.
November 25th-December 26th
Harassing my best friend from Quebec into watching Encanto.
December 31st
Rewatching Encanto. I held a bit more than 1 month.
January 8th
I discover that fanfic on Wattpad making me discover Bruno x Reader fanfics can be actually be good with an interesting reader.
December-January-February
I slowly become active on Tumblr once again, attracted by Encanto posts. First I only check posts, then I started reblogging, before posting myself some things. My first reblog was about the triplets looking like their age, while my first post was about Bruno's fangirl, to say I already posted 4 chapters of it.
Around January
I probably I starts making memes and edits.
January 18th
I draw my first Encanto fanart, a drawing of Bruno.
January 23rd
After dreaming it for weeks and hesitating a lot to write it, I post my first Encanto fanfiction in french, then in english the day after after spending the day translating by hand and having it checked by my friend from Quebec before of how insecure I was about my english level.
February 14th
I spend my day reading Bruno Madrigal/reader fics and ends up getting depressed because I read one that gets me depressed when I compare mine to hers.
Probably around February
I become friend with @omgcheez make my first Encanto friend outside of this Discord server, and he becomes one of the persons I hold the most dear 💚
March 3rd
I write a dissertation about Bruno in French I decide to translate in english for Tumblr and will finally post on October 17th.
March 11th
I receive my Bruno ruana after ordering it on a cosplay website someone told me about! The first of a long collection of dolls, posters, cosplays, etc.
March 19th
I post my first Jared Bush tweet, about the triplets birthday!
March 26th
I post my first analysis, a short one comparing Bruno and Evil!Bruno!
March 28th
This Encanto animatic 💚
March 31st
This shot progression of the chase scene. 💚
April 10th
I decide to create my fanfic materlist and it encourages me to write my first Encanto drabble I posted on April 14th.
April 17th
I post for the first time one of the tweets of the account Best of Bruno on Twitter, after asking for permission of course.
April 22nd
I post for the first time some screenshots I took of Bruno.
April 25th
I gets a heart attack because a blog I loved a lot reblogged a ficlet of mine and I'm like "I'm not worthy!!!" (watching you @neon-green-eyes). Now we're friends though.
May 8th
I bought Clip paint studio and tries to draw again. First drawing I post on Tumblr.
June 4th
I edited Card Captor Sakura screenshots to replace Sakura and Tomoyo's heads by Bruno and Mirabel's, horrifying people.
June 16th
My first self-insert commission I asked to @kewkcommissions is finally finished!
July 3rd
It's my birthday. So I write a very self-indulgent ficlet with a reader supposed to be me celebrating her birthday with her boyfriend Bruno and the rest of the Madrigal family.
I gets some asks wishing me happy birthday too, which is touching me a lot!
July 18th
I find a very interesting post about a jewish view of Encanto, starting my interest in a Jewish Madrigals AU.
Then, I create my own private Encanto server under a friend's suggestion since I was hesitating to join one and which.
July 25th
Encanto milk day, launched by @breannasfluff! I write a Bruno/reader ficlet with Milkman Bruno, drink some milk, and write a post about milk related expressions in french, inspired by @lunaencantada's.
July 28th
Under @unskilled-dabbler, @lunaencantada and @mmollymercury weird suggestion that I should continue drawing, I decide to draw again and to show it on my blog so you can see how bad I am.
July-August
Kinshi decides to ask for commissions with only 5 slot. I'm sending her one, thinking I probably won't be chosen, then hyperventilate when she accepts my request. Once it's ready, I post it on Tumblr and use it as a profile picture.
August 14th
I finish my first DTIYS, @glitternightingale's that taught me things though I ended up panicking.
August 26th
I do better for @waitingonavision's DTIYS!
September 6th
OBB BRUNO 💚
October 1rst
I begin my participation to Encantober, starting my hell between Encantober, my fic for the Encanto Big bang, and finishing my Halloween fic.
October 26th
@aetherdecember is so awesome she proofread my huge Halloween fic. So I gift her one fanart of one of her fics!
October 29th
@dazeddoodles post a fanart of Madrigal triplets as the Sanderson sister and inspire me to write a ficlet for Halloween with this topic.
November 24th
Happy anniversary Encanto!
In the end, I watched Encanto 39 times during this entire year!

Movies I watched this week #59
(At this point, I have so many movies on my ‘Watch List’, that my selections of what to see next are completely random, one from here and two from there..)
🍿
Encanto, the 60th (and latest) animation from Disney, took a page straight out of Gabriel García Márquez, creating a convoluted Colombian Macondo-like village in his magic realism style - for children. Many story lines could come directly from ‘100 years of solitude’: The swarms of yellow butterflies, her sister who is like Remedios The Beautiful, the all-powerful Abuela family matriarch, the magical powers of each Madrigal member. (Photo Above) - 9/10.
This is how they made it.
🍿
Charlotte Rampling X 3:
🎦🎦🎦 ...”I want you to find my Velma”... Farewell, My Lovely, a classic neo-noir with Robert Mitchum as an aging Philip Marlowe, and Charlotte Rampling at the peak of her Femme fatale period. With a fantastic mid-70′s cast: Harry Dean Stanton, pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone, Walter Mcginn (The mailman from ‘3 days of the condor’), Joe Spinell (’Willi Cicci’) and even crime novelist Jim Thompson as her old, senile judge husband. The opening shots with Marlowe's Theme on the soundtrack hooked me in. 7/10.
🎦🎦🎦 Euphoria - like the Norwegian film 'Selvmordsturisten’ ('Exit Plan’), this English-speaking Swedish drama takes place in a luxurious end-of-life resort hotel that caters to (wealthy) clients who want to die on their own terms. Alicia Vikander joins her estranged sister Eva Green for her last few days before ‘going away’ in a slow and uninteresting story. 3/10.
🎦🎦🎦 Night Train to Lisbon, another of Billie August’s literary bon-bons for international armchair tourists. Dull Jeremy Irons with his usual upper class lisp is a Swiss professor of philosophy, who saves a young woman from jumping off a bridge, and who then spontaneously leaves everything behind to follow her past clues to Portugal. A stiff formal drama with a constant voice over, reading passages from a memoir by a mysterious writer who had died years ago. And like many European co-productions, everybody speaks English with a jarring accent, no matter where they come from. Mush - 2/10.
🍿
Somebody on Metafilter wrote that Love and Leashes is “possibly the best BDSM rom-com film of any type I've ever seen". Except that it wasn’t: A milquetoast Korean kink affair between two young office workers, who experiment with some mild forms of B/D games, done in typically-shallow Netflix-style aesthetics. 2/10.
🍿
My fourth & fifth Paolo Sorrentino:
🎦🎦🎦 This Must Be the Place: Sean Penn plays a strangely unusual role, a directionless, middle-aged retired goth rock star, emotionally-stunted (but in a loving relationship with his glowing wife Frances McDormand.) And then, in the middle of the film, his father dies, he re-discovers his Jewishness(!), and embarks on a journey to find an old Nazi war criminal who had tortured his father in Auschwitz.
With David Byrne as himself! This one requires a second viewing to fully assess and appreciate.
🎦🎦🎦 Il Divo, his 2008 biopic of Giulio Andreotti, Italy’s powerful and corrupt prime minister during the First Republic. Toni Servillo plays him as a silent, duplicitous and pragmatic schemer who manipulated the powers that control Italy: Businessmen, politicians, The Vatican, and the Mafia. Visually mesmerizing but dramatically not too exciting. 4/10.
🍿
So I “Had to” watch David Byrne's American Utopia again - What a terrific, infectious concert! Wireless choreography & a brilliant inspirational party.  Includes a joyous version of ‘This Must Be the Place’. One of the best 2020 films, of any type.
🍿
Au hasard Balthazar, Robert Bresson’s story of a saintly donkey. A heart-breaking parable of Christian faith, seen in the journey of the mistreated Balthazar, suffering for the sins of humankind.
🍿
The Hilariously-Raunchy Ali Wong X 2:
🎦🎦🎦 Ali Wong: Don Wong, her third Netflix stand up special, (and the first where she’s not performing pregnant). I love her, and find her outrageous exposures funny & sexy. She is so funny, I watched it twice.
🎦🎦🎦 Always be my maybe is Ali Wong’s first written and produced film. It’s a sweet (albeit predictable) romantic comedy, about two childhood friends who end up falling for each other when they grow up. With Keanu Reeves playing an exaggerated douche version of himself.
...”I want to hold your purse “...8/10.
🍿
Nightwatch, a cliched Danish serial killer film from 1994. With very young Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in his debut role, as a night watchman at the local creepy morgue. Also with Kim Bodnia, 2 years before ‘Pusher’. Unsuspenseful and unoriginal. I was going to watch the American remake with Nick Nolte right after this, but decided that “No, one was bad enough”. 1/10.
🍿
First watch: It’s a wonderful life, Frank Capra’s sentimental Christmas classic, the colorized version. An alternative timeline with some interesting anti-capitalist message. Jimmy Stewart as the naive, sexually-ignorant community leader in the Norman Rockwell small town America.
...”Bye George I’ll see you in the funny papers...”
🍿
Documentarian Louis Theroux's Forbidden America: Extreme and Online, his latest BBC series. A scary look at the young neo-nazi, white-supremacist movement that is growing on the internet, and - basically - preparing for the beginning of the Race Wars. After drump, unashamed fascism is mainstream. 8/10.
🍿
2 Gus Van Sant re-watches:
🎦🎦🎦 First watch in many years: His Good Will Hunting, written by 20-something Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Lots of Good Will, not enough hunting...
🎦🎦🎦 To die for, with narcissistic Nicole Kidman at her most glamorous, young Joaquin Phoenix strutting, and wooden, bland Matt Dillon, in a glitzy Hollywood-style murder tale about “TV Celebrity Fame”. Also, David Cronenberg as ‘Man at lake’. 4/10
🍿
Ted K, a new biopic of Unabomber Ted Kaczynski. It wasn’t as bad as most biographies, still it depicted him as a lonely, psychopathic hermit. Not a judgemental piece, and without exploring too deeply his background & circumstances. 4/10
🍿
3 Olde Tyme comedies:
🎦🎦🎦 I discovered Voleflix, a new collection of public domain films, and there I watched Safety Last, Harold Lloyd’s silent era romance, with the famous ‘Dangling Clock’ scene. It’s the first time that I was able to see it in full. The whole (full-length) film is a set up for the ‘Climbing the side of a skyscraper’ 30 minute climax, and is indeed a nerve-racking suspense. Lloyd did the stunts himself, despite having lost a thumb and forefinger four years earlier, which you can’t notice, even if you look for it. 8/10.
🎦🎦🎦 Buster Keaton appeared in 14 of Fatty Arbuckle shorts between between 1917 and 1920. In The Cook, he’s a waiter dancing like an Egyptian, and Fatty is the cook. A fun slapstick. Observation: It seems like this was the period when people were introduced to eating spaghetti for the first time, so the spaghetti gag had special resonance. This film was believed to be lost, and was discovered in 1998.
🎦🎦🎦 My first Abbott and Costello, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, a horror “comedy” with Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolfman. A&C were the highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War II - inconceivable! 1/10.
🍿
Black moon, Louis Malle’s strange “fantasy”, a surrealistic wet dream Buñuel-style (and co-written by Buñuel’s daughter-in-law). It has a fat unicorn, and a lethal gender-war, it has 9-10 naked blond children chasing a giant sow, mute Joe Dallesandro decapitating an eagle, it has a pretty 15-year-old (Rex Harrison's granddaughter) who breastfeeds an old lady and who has a snake slithers into her crotch, and so much more. But there’s no sense, or explanations to any of it. It’s just an experimental metaphor for some kind of a adolescent dream. 2/10.
🍿
Circus is a poetic short story written by Tom Waits, narrated by Ken Nordine, and illustrated by Joe Coleman.

Moisés “Mo” Bondia! Official OC Info Post
Age: 55 (his age during the film)
Gender: AMAB/male (cis); he/him pronouns
Height: 5’6” (170 cm)
Physical description: Has glasses with oval frames, medium brown skin tone, and dark curly hair (3A?) with a puff on the front right side and grey streaks on the both sides; bearded. Wide-set eyes, broad nose; he’s lightly freckled on his cheeks and has dimples.
Dresses no differently than the townspeople but does wear a Sephardic style kippah (aka a yarmulke; photo is for reference) on his head. He’s on the chubby side, with round cheeks and a little double chin.
His clothing palette consists of goldish-browns and blues.
More art and info under the cut!
Tumblr media
I’m still trying to tweak his clothing style...
Personality: Mostly soft-spoken but has a bit of a mischievous/joking streak; very dorky sense of humor. Patient for the most part; has a calm, deliberate way of speaking. On the guarded side–vigilant around new people, though he tries to be as open and friendly as possible. Has a poor sense of direction.
Enjoys wine (the doofy jokes really come out when drunk) and singing (but is bad at it). He is a big Jewish nerd™. His family escaped with their chumash (the Torah/Five Books of Moses), a prayer book or two, and a few other things.
His name, Bondia, means “good day” (from the Hebrew surname, Yom Tov). It’s shaped his outlook on life, despite, or because of, the trauma of his childhood–he was five when he and his parents fled the bandits (at the beginning of Encanto).
Background [cw for parental death and depression]: Moisés and his parents, Ester (mother) and Jonás (father), have been in the Encanto since its creation. His parents both passed away by the time he’s in his mid-late 20s. Because he’s really the only Jew in the Encanto, he feels like the odd one out (in that sense, he has a kinship with Bruno and, to an extent, Mirabel). The townspeople get along with him, despite his differences.
Ester’s and Jonás’ deaths occurred one after the other and hit Mo very hard, and he went through a period of depression and, just, not taking care of himself very well. He wasn’t always chubby (fairly average build in his teens and early twenties), and actually lost an unhealthy amount of weight after his parents’ deaths but eventually recovered–he’s able to sympathize with Bruno in this way. He is body confident and prefers himself chubby.
Relationship with the Madrigals and others: After the Madrigals discover Judaica among their heirlooms/possessions, Mo falls into the role of a rabbi and helps the family explore their Jewish ancestry and reclaim that part of their identity. He worries about his motivation (e.g., having more Jews around will make him less lonely, is that why he’s doing what he’s doing?) and wonders if the Madrigals, especially Bruno, are actually interested (he is/they are).
Bruno becomes Mo’s study partner. Mo helps Bruno through the conversion process, doing his best to offer support when Bruno struggles with guilt over leaving Catholicism. They are not romantically involved, though I’ve toyed with the idea of a queerplatonic relationship. (Mo is likely panromantic and maybe ace.)
He and the Padre have an odd friendship. They spar over theology and general religion a lot, getting into intense debates, yet they can be seen chatting companionably at the bar(?)/other places.
Other info: Works as the Encanto’s calligrapher. He knows Spanish and Hebrew, and maybe some Ladino (Judeo-Spanish). There are a lot of challenges to being Jewish in the Encanto, but he and eventually the Madrigals make it work.
He likes flowers and sketching landscapes.
Pokémon AU info: He has a bunch of Litwick that hang out around him (8, + 1 shiny) and provide light on Shabbat. Also trains a Bramblin that eventually evolves into a Brambleghast, a Golurk, and a Smeargle. He picks up a stray Mareep.
The Litwick are a reference to a menorah. Bramblin reminds me of the burning bush, so I gave it to Mo. Golurk seems to be based on the Golem of Prague from Jewish legend. Smeargle reflects his work as a calligrapher. And Mareep because Moses is a shepherd in the Torah.

A couple of things on my mind...
One of my classes this semester is focused on reading and translating the Prophets (the “Na” part of the Tanakh aka “Hebrew Bible”): e.g., Amos, Isaiah. I keep forgetting that I want to write a post about Bruno and prophets/prophesying from a Jewish lens.
My ask box is open in general... but feel free to send me questions and stuff relating to Judaism and my Jewish Madrigals headcanon/AU!!!
I live to be a Jewish nerd.

Note
In your Jewish AU, is it just the Madrigals that are Jewish or is the whole town? Part of the town? Absolutely LOVE this AU by the way and I am also very here for any "looking at Bruno/prophets through a Jewish lens" that you want to share!
😍 Eee~
In my headcanon/AU, it's mainly the Madrigals who are Jewish. But with the history of conversos and crypto-Jews, I can imagine other canon/established characters finding out they have Jewish relatives and ancestors...
Essentially, the Madrigals discover what turns out to be Judaica, belonging to Alma's side of the family, while they're searching among Casita's rubble. They do have a neighbor, my OC named Moisés Bondia, who is the only known and practicing Jew in the Encanto. He's a few years older than the triplets, and had fled the horsemen with his parents, Alma and Pedro, and the others.
While not a rabbi, Mo takes on the role and helps the Madrigals (especially Bruno, his friend—not romantic partner) explore their Jewishness. ...This reminds me that I desperately want to write a fic about Bruno immersing in the mikveh (ritual bath) and formalizing his conversion.
Sometimes I dip into my alternate AU (alternate alternate universe 😂) where the Madrigals have always been Jewish.
More information about Mo and his relationship with the Madrigals can be found in this post!
Bruno as (Jewish) prophet post will happen * 3 * Thank you for the ask! 💚

Moon Knight Mirabel AU! CW for a quick mention of blood at the beginning.
I did almost forget about this prompt... 😬 @toaverse’s original outline is here. My exploratory notes are here (why a puma?). The drabble’s meant to parallel the proposal dinner scene in some ways. Also, the Madrigals are Jewish because Marc Spector is.
...
Mirabel’s day was moving along without much of a hitch. Until, that is, she blacked out and her mamá found her lying facedown in the grass, scratched and bleeding fingers wrapped around that darned gold-worked puma head she can’t seem to get rid of.
And now the teen is standing in front of the entire family (at her own insistence, because ugh, she figured it’s time they all know, you know?), taking a gulp of air before spilling her secret.
“You... might be wondering why I’ve been passing out and missing important dates lately; well, it turns out I’ve been hearing voices, like actual voices, though it’s really just the one voice, but like another voice, as in mine, plus one. What I’m trying to say is that the voices and this gold puma ornament are connected, along with the fact that I wake up not remembering what happened before I woke up, and what I mean is that... I’m pretty sure I’m possessed by a puma god?”
Everyone’s gaping at her. Not because they couldn’t keep pace with her rapid-fire confession or the animated hand movements that accompanied it. Possession, and by a god (little g)? Isn’t exactly kosher. (There’s also the rumor behind Tío Bruno’s disappearance, after all.)
They continue to stare until Camilo breaks in: “You got the raw deal, Mira.” His father shoots him a Look.
Still, the teen’s words are enough to shake some of the other family members into motion and a din of overlapping voices, which they reduce for Dolores’ sake as well as Pepa’s.
Soon enough, Alma is raising her hand for order, even while simultaneously wondering if they’ll need to involve the Encanto’s rabbi for further guidance. Julieta and Agustín keep making their way toward their youngest daughter, concern frozen on all three of their faces. But to Mirabel’s dawning horror, her parents’ forms start to swim in and out of focus, like they themselves are leaping forward and backward with each stuttering throb of her vision.
Not now, she thinks, as she fades to the sound of her mamá shouting her name.
